Superyacht Roles Revealed

Crew ‘Sea’ V examples

While not rocket science, getting your CV in a seaworthy state is the first step in getting your potentially dream superyacht job, so there’s no harm in refreshing it now and again. We reveal the best ways to improve your CV and how to adapt is as you progress through your superyacht career.

Crew interview Do’s and Don’ts

Unlike shore-based corporate roles, the superyacht recruitment interview process varies hugely from one vessel to another and whilst this is something we are working hard to standardise, there are some key things to be aware of. Find out how to prepare for the most common interview questions, but also what questions to be armed with to ask your potential Captain or Head of Department too.

Visa, Vaccinations and Vitals

Stay up to date with the latest international visa and vaccination requirements for superyacht crew as well as industry qualifications.

Onboard packing essentials

Getting ready to join your first superyacht or joining a new vessel and need to remind yourself what to pack? Look no further than our essential packing list.

Uncovered – crew courses

Horses for courses or critical for onboard career progression? We take a look at some of the common training courses on offer to superyacht crew and discuss whether they are worth it or if good old-fashioned experience wins.

Got a question?

If you can’t find the answer in this list, then you might find what you’re looking for in our blog archive. If not, feel free to contact us.

What are the minimum requirements to get a superyacht job? caret-down

All crew, whether green or experienced, will need an ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate and STCW Basic Safety Training qualification.

It’s also worth getting a Powerboat Level II qualification, particularly if you work or plan to work on deck. This will allow you to drive a tender up to 10 meters. On smaller yachts, it’s advisable interior and engineering crew take this course too.

Anyone handling or serving food, so service stewardesses included, will need a Level II Food Health & Safety qualification. It’s important this is by a provider recognised by the MCA.

While not mandatory, those looking to join the engine room in a junior position should complete the Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC1). Most Captains or Chief Engineers would not take someone on without it, unless they are an experienced crew member from another department.

Do I have the personality and skillset to be successful in the superyacht sector? caret-down

Working in the superyacht sector can be hugely rewarding but is extremely tiring and can involve working long hours. With this in mind, the sector is suited to positive, enthusiastic, hard working and flexible individuals. You must have a great work ethic, be a team player and fantastic attention to detail.

You’ll be away from family and friends for a long period of time, which can be lonely, so you must be able to get on and live with others in close quarters.

High-end service and hospitality experience is desirable for anyone looking to work as a steward or stewardess and any trade (e.g. carpentry, electrician) or water sports experience is a good start for deckhands. If you’re looking to get a job in the engine room, then you may have to start on deck, but if you have a good level of experience in any kind of engineering, mechanical, IT or electrical industry, then you may be able to start as a junior.

Additional experience as a beautician, nurse, paramedic, masseuse, hairdresser, carpenter, PT, yoga /pilates and water sports instructor can set you apart.

Where can I find a superyacht job? caret-down

The first place to start is on the yachting sector job board, Yotspot . Take a look through the current live jobs and requirements to get a feel for what types of roles might be best suited to you. Set up a profile and upload your CV.

Register with as many crew agencies as you can. While Quay Crew make every effort to provide a much higher level of service than our competitors when we represent you to clients, we are not able to represent every single candidate who registers with us for various reasons. So maximise your visibility and chances of getting exposure to as many roles as possible by signing up with everyone.

When you progress through your yachting career, you can build a relationship with the agencies you want to represent you.

Network – either with people you know already working in the industry or signing up to Facebook groups and forums.

Finally, when you are confident you have enough money behind you to support you for a while, consider dockwalking. This involves basing yourself near a marina and simply cold-calling superyachts in the marina asking if they have any work.

It’s very hit and miss and all about timing, but you can get a decent day rate for day work helping with wash downs, detailing and teak scrubbing, for example.

Where should I base myself? caret-down

If you are planning to dockwalk and can fund yourself for a while, base yourself in the South of France or Spain – Majorca or Barcelona primarily.

If you’re an experienced crewmember looking for your next role, then being in Europe or the US is preferable right now for easy access to yachts, less visa and travel challenges.

Should I register with multiple crew agencies? caret-down

Yes. This will maximise your chances of getting a job and a good agency will also help you get your CV up to scratch.

What are the best courses to do? caret-down

Additional training can be beneficial but is not essential. In most cases, a yacht would prefer relatable experience, and if you’re green, this may come from a variety of land-based jobs.

There are hundreds of courses now of offer for aspiring superyacht crew, from silver service training for stewardesses and ropework courses for deckhands to diesel engine maintenance for budding engineers.

Completing courses does not guarantee you a first, second or even third job and it may therefore be better to wait until you get your onboard to utilise any training budgets and do those that are more useful for your particular role on a specific yacht.

Do I need to be vaccinated? caret-down

Yes. Pretty much no superyacht will take on crew who are not vaccinated against Covid-19 / Coronavirus.

How do I get a B1/B2 visa? caret-down

The problem with a B1/B2 visa is that you can’t get one unless you are employed because your employer has to sponsor it. This can be a real barrier to entry for green crew but the good news is that all superyachts are aware of this and will expect a delay to start dates if they are open to or looking specifically for green crew.

You can currently get one within a couple of weeks of getting an Embassy appointment – which is the hard part!

This is also something to be mindful of if you have been out of work for a while or taken a sabbatical. Make sure your visa is still in date and if it’s about to run out, consider staying put on your current yacht for renewal before you start looking for another role.

How long will it take to get a superyacht job? caret-down

If you’re waiting to get your first superyacht job, then be prepared to wait six months to a year. And accept that you might never get a job.

Good candidates with experience can be swept up extremely quickly in the current market, but to put yourself in the best position, try to be available at extremely short notice.

If you have a great secondary skill, some boats will wait for the right person.

When is the best time to find a superyacht job? caret-down

There are superyacht vacancies all year round, especially for existing crew and the sector is not as seasonal as it was before. But if you’re looking for your first role, it can be busier in March/April/May and November/December time.

How many couples’ jobs are there? caret-down

Crewmembers who are part of a couple and want to work together onboard a superyacht will find opportunities are limited. We only get around one per month, at most! Although we are finding more yachts are open to the idea because of the candidate shortage, the problem is that there aren’t often two suitable roles available at the same time.

It’s more likely on smaller yachts where, for example, a Captain and Chief Stew can share a cabin, freeing up space for another member. Couples’ roles are often lower paid too, because people are willing to sacrifice elements of their package to be able to work together.

What can I expect to be paid? caret-down

Salaries can vary hugely from yacht to yacht, but as a rough guide, junior crew can expect to be paid €2,500 per month upwards, progressing to €4-5,000 as a Bosun, €5,000+ as a Chief Officer or Chief Stew and €7,000+ as a Chief Engineer.

Captains earn anything from around €10,000 per month to over €25,000!

You may have other benefits like extended leave, training budgets, bonuses, use of yacht facilities, healthcare etc.

How much time off do you get when working on a superyacht? caret-down

The minimum you are entitled to is 38 days. Whilst onboard, you could be working 7 days a week during peak periods and other times getting weekends or some days in the week off. It really will depend where in the world and cruising itinerary you are.

Usually, the longer you are in yachting, the more leave you get. It could increase to 60 days or working 5 months and taking one month off then three on one off, four on two off and so forth.

At the other end of the scale, usually reserved for Captains and Heads of Departments, you could get time for time rotation, which is the same amount of weeks on followed by the same amount of weeks off, for example 10:10.

Should I look for job on a Charter Yacht or Private Yacht? caret-down

A recent survey of over 100 Captains revealed that one third of superyachts are mainly charter. As the name suggests, Private Yachts are used mostly by owners and non-paying guests (friends and family) whereas Charter Yachts are hired by others.

The roles are pretty much standard across the board, but busy Charter Yachts might be harder work and much busier, with guests on non-stop during peak seasons. This might be the same for Private Yachts though, depending on the owner’s usage.

Crew on Private Yachts tend to get better salaries and overall packages, but Charter crew can earn thousands in tips each season – the average being €16,600 in one year. This will depend on how often the yacht is chartered.

Testimonials

“I think the reason that Quay Crew is (in my opinion and most of my colleagues’ opinions too) the industry’s leading agent is down to the culture of integrity, honesty and real care that permeates your company, and the careful selection of a candidate that will stay in the job. Long may it continue. I will never hesitate to use, recommend or assist Quay Crew for as long as I’m in yachting, and after.”

Chief Officer – 70m Yacht

“Having moved into the yachting industry from the commercial sector, Sam gave me valuable feedback on my CV and routes into the industry. I can highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for their next engineering position as she does her best to make sure that the yacht is right for you.”

2nd Engineer – 52m Yacht

“Having been in contact with Caroline since the summer, I felt the whole way through my search application process that she was completely on my side and has supported me and given me the confidence to propel my career to the next level.”

Chief Stew – 60m Yacht

“I would just like to take this opportunity to express how amazing Max has been in finding myself and my partner a position on a brand-new build. Max has been such a rock star in not just finding me one job but two jobs, which I am absolutely grateful for. It’s really nice to have a crew agency like Quay Crew who are reliable, trustworthy as well as always wanting to consider your best interests. The team at Quay Crew are absolutely exceptional and I will always recommend only the best for them. ”

Captain – 30m+ Yacht

“The best crew agent I have ever dealt with…always on the ball, super efficient, attentive and always available. There are so many agencies that only care about the yachts because they are the ones paying and completely ignore the crew so I want to thank you for all your help. ”

Head of Service – 100m Yacht

“I really appreciate the communication and commitment from Quay Crew and would like to mention that Tom has been incredible throughout the process. He had a vast amount of information relating to the role and yacht and knew exactly what would suit me. I highly recommend Quay Crew.”

Bosun – 60m+ Yacht

“Quay Crew was the most professional of the agencies I was using in my search. I had constant communication throughout and the whole process was personal. I’m very happy with the placement and would recommend Glen and the team to anyone. ”

2nd Officer – 65m Yacht

“What sets the team apart more than anyone else is the open and honest dialogue as well as the feeling that we’re working towards the same goal. Rather than just being another number or CV on someone’s desk, I established an amazing rapport with Glen so that he was able to really know what my goals were and where I wanted to take my career…and he was absolutely instrumental in seeing that I achieved that by placing me on my current vessel. At some point in the future, I plan to be on the opposite side of the interview process and Quay Crew will be the first agency that I reach out to.”

2nd Officer – 80m Yacht

“I wanted to say how fantastic Tom has been in finding a job for me. From first talking to him on the phone, he gave some fantastic advice about the industry and made the whole process feel calm and easy. His communication was absolutely exemplary and he went above and beyond to secure me a job. I would highly recommend Quay Crew to anyone.”

Deckhand – 90m Yacht

“I recently completed a 4 week trip through Quay crew on a yacht that Phil placed me on. I had applied for the role through other agencies but they refused [to put me forward] and Phil was the only recruiter that I spoke to who also saw flexibility in the job requirements. It’s a pleasure dealing with a recruiter that actually understands the role and the candidates suited for it. I hope to work with Phil and the Quay crew team again in the future.”

How to find the right superyacht crew

The advent of crew-based reality TV has opened up many people’s eyes to the superyachting good life, but it has also raised concerns among potential new owners. Fortunately, the reality is very different, and there are ways to guarantee your crew is as professional as possible.

We’ve all witnessed the rise of reality TV, and the often jarring and cringeworthy – and bingeworthy – antics of those being filmed. The superyacht industry has not escaped this trend, but while the fly-on-the-crew-mess-wall format has opened superyachting and crewing to a vast new audience, it has also helped place seeds of doubt in the minds of some potential new owners. After all, would you really want a crew who treated your yacht – and who acted – like they do on Below Deck ? Is that what really happens? And how do you navigate the minefield of crew selection, particularly if you are new to the superyachting game?

Fundamentally, it’s about realising that there are people who will take care of that for you, and it’s about having faith in the professionalism of everyone who is involved in selecting crew for your yacht. It’s not a decision that you have to make directly, although some owners like to meet potential new crew to get a gauge on them. There are tiers of professionals who are involved in the running of a superyacht who are also there to ensure it is manned properly, ranging from the yacht management company (who often will be a multi-service company or brokerage with a crew management division too), to crew placement specialists whose job it is to filter potential applicants and put forward those who they believe are the best fit. Within those confines, there is little room for potential crew who perhaps arrive with the wrong idea about what crewing a superyacht entails.

Ultimately, though, it comes down to the captain, who will most likely be the one who makes the final decision, who oversees the crew as a unit, and who sets the boundaries for crew behaviour and professionalism. Get the right superyacht captain, and the rest will take care of itself.

“ Below Deck is a TV show and so of course they may have a tendency to overdramatise situations and to put people on board who don’t really work well together in the same environment,” says Nigel Tang, a 31-year-old captain of a 54-metre yacht. “I think yachting is not really like that. When I hire crew I try to make sure I hire the correct person for the correct culture on board – so I might ask them how they spend their evenings, and if their response is that they like to go out drinking and partying with their friends then I know that person will not be a good fit for my boat.”

How to find the right superyacht crew

Building the onboard family

The truth is that a successful yacht – whether a charter superyacht or a private vessel – incorporates a team that not only works well together but also becomes like a family, and it is the captain’s job to build that family and to act as its head.

“I think one of the biggest ways to keep [good] crew would be how the captain treats the crew members,” Tang offers. “Yes, the management company offers the salary and the benefits, but it’s the captain who shapes the culture of the ship, so you need to create an inclusive culture where you listen to your crew and give them the space to express themselves. My crew are always welcome to talk to me at any time – my chief stewardess has even said to me that I’m not just the captain, I am the crew’s psychologist and therapist!”

On top of that, Tang says, the captain needs to create a space where crew can feel like they are at home. “Yachting isn’t a job,” he asserts, “it’s a lifestyle. Crew have to spend months at a time on board, and you have to create some sort of home for them. So on board my yacht, every Friday we have a barbecue, and we have game nights, and whenever we do drills I try to make it as realistic and as fun as possible.”

A good crew will also take it upon themselves to create that sense of family, and of socialising that doesn’t revolve around drinking. “I’d tell someone it would be the end of their yachting career if they went on Below Deck ,” says Captain Matthew Pownell-Jones. “There are other ways you can have fun rather than drinking, and that’s a massive thing. We’ve done go-karting one day, 10-pin bowling the next,” he continues. “We do gym on Mondays, yoga on Tuesday mornings, running on Wednesdays, watersports on Fridays when we’re at anchor. It’s about being proactive and guiding the team on what we’re going to do – and it’s not just me; the chief stew, the second officer have all initiated things, and the ETO will set up movies on a Thursday and it just brings everyone together. We are a family at the end of the day, and it’s so important we stay like that.”

How to find the right superyacht crew

Captain Nigel Tang

Building the superyacht work ethic

Crewing on board a superyacht is hard work, involving long hours, particularly when there are guests or charterers on board, and when crew have been working together and living together in the confines of the yacht and the crew areas for long periods, it’s easy to understand the need to blow off steam. But it’s also why crewing takes a particular type of person – and typically, not the type who might appeal to a reality TV audience.

“It seems the culture on shows like Below Deck is very heavy on work hard, play hard, but we don’t do that on my yacht – we work hard, relax hard!” offers Tang. “I feel people maybe have the wrong idea about yachting, and when it’s marketed like that you can attract a different kind of potential crew – but I believe in an ethos of hard work, self-discipline and proving yourself. And for new crew coming in, imagine how much you would stand out as a green crew member when you adopt a policy of do first, demand later!”

Adds Steve Osborne, captain of the yacht Slipstream : “There’s a risk of people coming into this industry with a perception that it’s all about money. It can be hard to find the right people who are willing to work hard for what they get, and the right people who can live in a sort of a melting pot and all get along as well. But it’s possible, and I think we’ve managed to do that pretty well on Slipstream – and we have managed to do that well over the years, which means longevity and that also means the owner and charter guests see the same faces each year.”

How to find the right superyacht crew

Port Montenegro Crew Winter Games

Crewed awakenings

There’s no question that crew are a central part of the yachting experience and, more important, central to the safeguarding and maintenance of perhaps anyone’s most valuable asset – their yacht. And while finding good crew who work well together and who balance their expectations in terms of salaries and shore leave with hard work and professionalism is always a challenge, the truth is that there are thousands of superyachts operating successfully with strong crews on board.

“My favourite part of the job is also the most difficult part of my job, and that’s crew,” says Captain Kelly Gordon . “Right now, my boat is a happy, fun-loving, playful, hard-working professional boat. But,” she continues, “it’s taken a long time to put together that programme. I’ve had to work really hard at the relationships with the crew.”

So, is finding good crew hard? “Hell yes it is,” Gordon continues, “but if you work at it, and you put the time in, and you as a captain invest into finding and working with and mentoring your crew, you can create the best-operating boat. I think,” she concludes, “it’s also important for the crew to know and to understand the reason someone buys a yacht. It’s because they have incredibly busy and stressful business lives. The boat is supposed to be their safe space, their stress-free zone, their place to come and play for the day or a week or a few weeks. There are always underlying issues with operations on a yacht, but as soon as our owner steps on board, it needs to appear that everything’s running smoothly. It’s our job to make that his fun zone, his no stress zone.” It’s the sort of attitude and approach to crew that should reassure any potential owner that with the right captain and shoreside team, their yacht will be in the best of hands.

The Full List of Yacht Crew & Staff

Super Yacht

Published on November 22, 2016

Working on board a super yacht is a fascinating career.  Life at sea, whilst demanding can be an extremely lucrative and exciting career path. But do you know the full list of yacht crew and staff? And what it takes to work on a yacht?

Whilst it is more suited to the younger generations, the process and types of crew involved with running these magnificent vessels is impressive.

Of course, the types of staff required for each vessel vary depending on the size of yacht and the type of yacht.  In the super yacht world, it is likely that a large number of the below crew will be involved for each yacht. Wow, the staff required to operate a yacht... Share on X

Here is an overview of the crew involved in building, maintaining, and running these floating mansions:

Super Yacht

As captain it is you are responsible for the crew, guests and vessel. Every crew member and even visiting guests fall under your command and you have the final say on all yacht decisions.  Alongside your qualifications , expect to be paid a high salary in return for your professional service.

Captain/Engineer – A multi-faceted role, this combines the skills of captain with Engineer.  A highly sought-after type of crew, they will straddle the skills for both captaining the boat and ensuring engineering issues are dealt with whilst at sea.

1st Officer – Sometimes known as Chief Officer or Chief Mate is second in command to the Captain and manages all the deck crew including the Bosun, Deckhand and any second or third officers.  You would be required to undertake bridge duty and thus have a good range of qualifications and skills.

2nd Officer – Is the second-ranking position to the 1st Officer.  You would require a good level of qualifications   and skills to achieve this position.  A 2nd Officer may also be designated in additional areas such as security, medical, or safety, depending on background and specific skills.

3rd Officer – Is the third-ranking position to the 2nd Officer.  Qualifications and skills as per the other officer roles are required.

Chase Boat Captain – A chase boat  is a vessel which does not live on the main yacht and often has their own crew. These can be towed, driven separately, or berthed in a convenient location.

Chase boats are becoming very popular due to restrictions in tender garage space.  As the name would suggest this role refers to the captain who is in charge of the chase boat and subsequent crew.

O.O.W (Officer On Watch) – This is a deck officer in charge of keeping watch on the ships bridge and overseeing navigation whilst on duty.  The OOW ensures the ship complies with all COLREGS and safety protocols.  This position requires additional qualifications in order to help perform the said duties.

Bosun  – Sometimes referred to as the Leading Hand or Senior Deckhand, the Bosun is an experienced deckhand most likely able to take on additional and extra responsibilities.  They tend to be the main tender driver and take additional responsibilities in security.  Like a deckhand, less qualifications are required, but flexibility and the ability to take direction and blend into the team environment is very important.

Lead Deckhand – As the name suggests, the Lead Deckhand will be in charge of the other deckhands.  Generally, only found onboard yachts where more than one deckhand is required, this is a position of responsibility. Ultimately the buck stops with the lead deckhand, so it takes a strong personality and adaptive approach to get the job done regardless of the day or hour!

Super Yacht 2

Security Officer – Super yachts are valuable and expensive items, so a dedicated security officer is commonplace.  Spending 60 million on a superyacht is considered to be a mid-level purchase in the superyacht world!

Security officers are often employed to take control of all aspects of security, from when the yacht is moored in the bay (and the crew depart for downtime) through to being moored on land.  This position is suited to close protection and military background candidates with specific qualifications in security.

Commercial  Shipping Master – This is a phrase referring to a Captain of a commercial shipping vessel.  They are in essence the captain of the boat (see captain) but will typically be in charge of commercial operations rather than private or chartered yachts and super yachts.

Professional Race Crew – These are unique and exceptional individuals, with a strong background in shipping.  Race crew members require a high level of qualification and ability to focus whilst leading the crew and vessel to compete in international competitions.

Purser – Is in charge of the interior and financial matters in accordance to the ship.  Normally found on large yachts and superyachts, the Chief Steward will report to the purser.  Due to the amount of admin required a strong background of accounts and bookkeeping is required.

Chief Steward/ess – Will be the most experienced member of the Steward team.  They will often be in charge of recruiting and training less senior members of the team.  The chief steward should have the ability to think ahead, plan for every possibility and focus on the finishing touches and detail required for the very highest standard of service. Yachting qualifications and a proven history of working onboard large yachts are required for this position.

2nd Steward/ess – Second in command to the Chief Steward, the 2nd steward is in charge of all duties as requested by their superior.  The 2nd steward ensures interiors, housekeeping, laundry and the presentation of the vessel is spotless.  Their duties may include anything from childcare (if required) to pet care.  They work closely with the crew to ensure that the guest and clients experience onboard is perfect.

Super Yacht 3

Steward/ess – A role found onboard every yacht or superyacht, the steward is in charge of client experience.  From housekeeping through to food and drink service, the steward helps with all aspects of running the yacht.  Stewardesses are expected to work long hours and have a good, positive and flexible attitude.

Stew/Deck – This is a combined role between a Steward and Deck crew member.  This role straddles both the interior and exterior of the yacht and is a popular choice when needing additional staff on board.

Solo Steward/ess – Typically found on much smaller vessels, the solo steward will be the only steward on board.

Head Chef – Is perhaps one of the most important roles on board. The right chef is the key to a successful crew and perfect guest experience.

A head chef must have a wide range of culinary experiences, and be able to take part in the service for the guests if required, including Silver Service , Buffet Service and Fish filleting at the table.

Sous Chef   /2nd Chef – The assistant to the head chef, the sous chef will help the Head Chef with all cooking duties and also cook for the crew of the yacht.  Often this role is combined with a steward position, but on the larger vessels this may be a self-contained role (see Cook/Stew).

Cook/Stew – This role combines cooking with steward duties.  Assisting the head chef, and then performing standard Steward duties (see Steward).

Cook – This position is suited to an individual who is less experienced as a chef but enjoys cooking.  This would be a candidate who is happy to cook for the crew and guests (if required),and will be often used during off duty hours (for example if the chef is sleeping).  Generally, not an individual role (unless the yacht is very big), this is a good skill for any of the main crew to have on their CV.

Head of Housekeeping – Often this role is found in the larger vessels or commercial cruises, this person would be in charge of housekeeping and be a specialist in this subject.  They would oversee the duties and work closely with the Chief Stew.

Laundry Personnel – This may be a crew member with additional skills in laundry, or on the bigger vessels this may be a dedicated role.  This role is typically found more in commercial shipping where the cruise ships require a huge amount of laundry each day at sea.

Beauty/Spa therapist – This is a role-specific with skills in line with beauty and holistic treatments.  Superyachts will generally have an area for pampering and your role on the vessel is to satisfy the client’s needs.  You would need to have traditional therapist qualifications , along with your yachting qualifications.  It is often common to combine the role of 1st Officer/2nd Officer with a combination role.

Super Yacht 4

Masseuse – Involved in the beauty/spa area onboard, the masseuse role is to relax and treat the guests at their leisure.  From sports massage through to Swedish and reflexology, a range of massage techniques is preferred.  Again, this role can be combined with the Beauty/Spa therapist (depending on the size of the yacht) and can also be combined with main crew duties.

Fitness Trainer – Roles specific for personal trainers or fitness coaches, these team members would work with the guests in the dedicated gym areas helping with fitness goals whilst at sea.  These might be specific training programmes or general conditions.  Again, this role might be a combined role with other crew duties.

Nurse – An important role, particularly if the yacht doesn’t have facilities for helicopter landing.  Qualifications must be in line with medical guidelines, and the nurse or Doctor should have ability to cope with a wide range of illness and ailments.  Up to date First Aid and yachting qualifications will also be expected.  Again, this role can be combined with the main crew duties.

Engineering

Chief Engineer – This member of the team is required to oversee and ensure that the electrical and engineering of the yacht is operating without issues.  They should be flexible and willing to help fix not only important problems, but even be willing to help fix a broken toilet!

At sea the right part might not be immediately accessible, so an engineer should be able to troubleshoot and think outside the box.

2nd Engineer – Second in command to the Engineer, the 2nd engineer assists and helps with all duties around the maintenance of the vessel.

3rd Engineer – Third in command to the Engineer.

ETO (Electrician Technical Officer) – Normally employed on larger vessels where the support is required.  They report to the Chief Engineer.

Electrical Engineer – Again this role is similar to the ETO.  Reporting to the Chief Engineer and holding qualifications in Electrical maintenance.

Super Yacht

Pilot – For the larger vessels, commercial and cruise yachts, access to the vessel is often by air (helicopter or seaplane).  The larger vessels may well have their own aviation permanently stationed on the yacht, and in turn a pilot is required to fly the appropriate aircrafts.

Shore Based

Admin – As the title suggests this team will manage the administration, HR and paperwork of the yacht.  Working closely with the purser onboard and with the owner of the vessel, ensuring that the specific operation of the yacht is always managed correctly.

Admin will be closely linked to the Captain, Purser and Chief Steward on the yacht and will involve a whole host of specialised skills from graphic designers through the tech, online support teams.

PA – This role is suited to a highly organised and efficient team member.  Working closely with the admin team and the crew onboard the yacht.

Villa Staff – As the name would suggest, this would encompass a wide range of shore-based staff to work within the villa’s typically frequented by the yacht.  This could range from a Butler through to Nanny, Housekeeper, Chauffeurs etc.

Contract Workers

Alongside the main crew of the yacht, there are contract workers who are brought in for yacht maintenance. As and when this might be required.  These roles are self-explanatory. And they all work to ensure that the yacht is maintained. Any repairs are done efficiently when the yacht is in port or moored for the day.

Roles include: Day Worker, Varnisher, Painter, Spray Painter, Carpenter. Shipwright, Metal Fabricator, Welder, Rigger, Laminator, Electrician. Electrician Expert, Sail Maker, Project Manager. Customer Service Staff and Catering Staff.

9 superyacht crew members share what it's really like working for a billionaire on board

  • Superyachts are luxurious, but working on them isn't.
  • Insider polled superyacht crew members to find out what it's really like working for a billionaire on board.
  • They said their days are spent fulfilling requests and keeping the yacht in top shape — but it really all depends on the superyacht owner.

Insider Today

While working on a superyacht sounds glamorous, in reality it can be anything but.

Insider polled superyacht crew members to get an inside look at life on board. When asked what working for a millionaire or billionaire is really like, they agreed on a few things, like long hours.

Many superyacht  crew members wake up before dawn to start their day, which typically involves a lot of cleaning and catering to the requests of owners and guests.

But while some superyacht owners are demanding, others are less so — it really all depends on their personality. Some crew members said that owners and guests are more like regular people than you'd expect.

Here's what life on board looks like, according to nine superyacht crew members.

Note: Insider was able to verify each crew member's identity, but we refrained from publishing their full names to protect their privacy.

Working on a yacht can be lucrative.

my superyacht crew

Insider previously reported that deckhands earn an average of $3,083 to $3,574 a month, depending on the boat size. Captains reportedly get paid even more — they earn $7,750 to $19,961 a month on average.

Kate Lardy of the Sun Sentinel reported that a captain in Fort Lauderdale once spent a total of $14,255 on day workers, who are hired temporarily for onboard services, during a two-month period.

But it's also tiring and demanding.

my superyacht crew

One captain who works on a 120-foot boat alluded to tiring conditions. Working for a billionaire is "demanding," he said, with hours that begin very early — before 6 a.m. — and end very late.

Yacht crew members have to meet high expectations.

my superyacht crew

One electronic technical officer who works on a 223-foot yacht stressed the pressure of delivering top-notch service while remaining level-headed.

Working on a yacht involves "very, very long days with little rest and expectations to perform at the highest levels of service while not losing your cool under pressure," he said.

They have to work hard to keep yachts spotless.

my superyacht crew

Guests and owners can be messy and dirty — and it's up to the crew to make sure it doesn't look that way. A mate on a 92-foot yacht said he had to wake up before guests or other crew members to get the yacht's exterior ready for the day.

"They expect it to look like no one has touched it," he said. "So any rain or dew, water spots, bird crap, or salt spray has to be continuously cleaned, not to mention having to constantly wipe stainless [steel] and glass when guests move around the boat. They leave smudges and fingerprints everywhere.

"By the time I start at the top of the boat and move around drying the boat, washing windows, and prepping water toys, depending on where the guests are, it's time to clean behind them."

He said he then has to be available for whatever the day brings, whether guests want to take the tender out or play with water toys, the interior crew needs help with service, or any maintenance issues need to be addressed.

There's a lot of cleaning, smiling, and snacking.

my superyacht crew

Nic, a chief stewardess, shared her typical daily itinerary, which extends from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., with a one-hour break for a power nap.

There's constant snacking, as she doesn't always have time to sit and eat, she said. She's also "always thinking and planning ahead for the next meal or excursion," like what guests "need to take with them and what they need upon return," she said.

"Always thinking of ways to make the day special and 'perfect' (as much as possible)," she said.

She added: "Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, and lots of smiling. Behind the scenes, a lot of running around and working at high speed, throwing stuff into drawers and sorting it out later when you have time, laughing, and keeping crew spirits high. Never-ending laundry."

Work is easier when the owners are away, which is often.

my superyacht crew

Billionaire owners actually don't spend a lot of time on their multimillion-dollar yachts. Neither do the guests who charter them.

"Owners or guests are typically not on the boat all that much, so most of the time the crew has the boat to themselves," said Michael, a former yacht captain who worked on yachts ranging from 130 to 170 feet.

"Work is pretty easy and consists of general maintenance and keeping the boat in perfect/ready state for when the owner does show up. If you have a good crew it can be very enjoyable. If you do not, it can be very stressful and miserable."

Everything depends on the owner's personality.

my superyacht crew

Some crew members get lucky working for generous yacht owners, while others get treated like the help.

"It's hard work and long days when they are on board," said Martin, the captain of a 155-foot yacht. "It really depends on the owner. Some have treated me like family, and some have treated me like a servant."

But sometimes it's not the owner who's difficult.

my superyacht crew

A chef on a 150-foot motor yacht also said that working for a billionaire could be unpredictable, as every boat and owner is different.

But it's not the owner of the yacht who's always difficult to work for.

"Bear in mind that the captain is every bit as much your boss as the owner is, and sometimes the captain is a bigger pain in the ass than the billionaire owner," she said.

Yacht owners are just your everyday people on vacation — with more money.

my superyacht crew

According to Mark, the captain of a 114-foot yacht, billionaire owners are just like normal vacationers. Kind of.

"They're just people holidaying, but with more money and toys to fill their days," he said.

They can be more down-to-earth than expected, but their spontaneity can be frustrating.

my superyacht crew

"It's really nice to find out that some of the wealthiest people you'll work for are actually more down-to-earth and normal like any person you'd meet on the street," a stewardess on a 112-foot sailing yacht said. "The saying is 'money screams, wealth whispers.'"

She added: "A typical day involves turning heads, beds, and laundry for guests and crew, which can be a lot if you're a department of one. Food and beverage service three times a day. A lot of plans and schedules change on the fly depending on the owners and their wants and whims, which can be a bit frustrating."

feadship project 1012 yacht launched

92m hybrid electric Feadship Drizzle delivered to owner

The 91.8-metre Feadship superyacht Drizzle has now been delivered following successful sea trials in June. According to BOATPro , her final destination is Malta, an archipelago in the central Mediterranean.

The superyacht was last seen departing from the shipyard's facilities in Amsterdam (13 June). Built for a repeat Feadship owner who came to the project with "informed requests based on his long experience of yachting", Drizzle 's design is by Dutch studio Sinot and the owner's related design office.

Characterised by chamfered exterior contours and a more traditional flared bow, the yacht has a modern-classic style with naval architecture by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects . Notably, she is the first Feadship to carry full Hybrid Electric Class notation.

Drizzle 's interior is designed to reflect an "understated family home" with natural materials and finishes throughout. Accommodation is found on the main deck, along with the large pool and open-air lounge shaded by the deckhead overhang.

Meanwhile, the owner's suite, family lounge and wellness area are situated on the upper decks. Up top, the sundeck serves as an observation vantage point with a forward-facing sofa and sun loungers, while the aft deck is used for storing two rescue tenders.

One of the owner's key requirements in building the yacht was to house a more spacious beach club in the stern, which occupies one-quarter of the total length of the lower deck. The large, fixed stern platform combines with two fold-down platforms to create 165 square metres of water-level lounging space. Sweeping staircases on either side of the stern platform lead to the main deck aft.

Between the engine room and the beach club is a side-loading garage with room for two 10-metre tenders, a ski boat and various water toys. Forward is the crew area, comprising the galley, crew mess and crew accommodation.

Drizzle carries full Hybrid Electric Class notation, the power package comprising two main engines and shaft-driven fixed pitch propellers, coupled with electric motors of 560kW each and 1MW of Li-ion batteries. The e-motors work as shaft generators to produce electricity to serve the hotel load or recharge the battery bank, as well as for low-speed navigation while the generators or batteries generate the required electrical power.

Albert Abma, Feadship project manager, commented on the launch in April: "Working with the experienced owner, designers and owner's team has been a professional pleasure. Gathering the operational experience of the owner's team with the yard’s building experience has resulted in this modern-classic, state-of-art and full-custom new Feadship".

The news comes closely after the first proper sighting of Project 713 , Feadship's first solar powered superyacht. She is now preparing for sea trials.

Yächtley Crëw will bring 'yacht rock' to Providence, with a Warwick native on board

If songs like “I'd Really Love to See You Tonight” and “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” make you think of kicking back on a boat and cruising in the summertime, you’re not alone.

YouTube coined the genre “yacht rock” to describe the soft rock sound of the 1970s and '80s, and Warwick native Tom Gardner, guitarist with the band Yächtley Crëw , invites you to get on board with the vibes when their “Full Steam Ahead” tour stops at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Saturday, July 27.

“It’s like a feeling that reminds you of your childhood or first love. It’s nostalgia,” says Gardner, who goes by the stage name Tommy Buoy. “It’s actually a jazz-rock fusion that’s pretty hard to play. We had to step up our game to learn these songs, many of which were originally performed by high-quality studio musicians.”

After years performing solo and in bands across the region – maybe you’ve heard his song “Summertime in Rhode Island” with the rock/reggae band Someday Providence – Gardner moved to Los Angeles in 2010. He connected with six other musicians to form Yächtley Crëw, which performed for the first time in January 2017, and he says “it’s been kind of a rocket ride since then.”

Clad in nautical attire for shows, the band has performed with artists like Elliot Lurie, lead singer of the band Looking Glass, whose song “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” is one of the covers Yächtley Crëw regularly includes in set lists. After signing with Jimmy Buffett’s Mailboat Records label, they also had a six-month residency in Las Vegas.

Born in 1983, Gardner, a Pilgrim High School and University of Rhode Island graduate, says he was drawn to the mellow sound of yacht rock even before it was so named. Songs like Steely Dan’s “Reeling in the Years,” “Don’t Bring Me Down” by ELO and “Rich Girl” by Hall & Oates are buoyant, he says.

As for the definition of yacht rock, he says that’s highly debated in the industry but generally revolves around big vocals and harmonies.

“We let the fans tell us what they want to hear,” Gardner says. “Some songs end up borderline yacht rock, but if the fans love it, we’ll play it. We also bring our own style. We’re faithful to the originals, but we are high-energy with choreography, banter and lights. We’re here to entertain!”

Yächtley Crëw performed several years ago at The Strand in Providence, but the group has multiple venues in the area on this year’s tour, including three in Massachusetts: Indian Ranch in Webster , South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, and the Cape Cod Melody tent in Hyannis.

“The whole sailing vibe fits in with New England,” Gardner says, adding that he loves returning to his home state. “I’m always going to be proud of Rhode Island. It’s special when we see someone from here – it’s like one big town.”

If you go ...

Maverick breaks Race to Mackinac record

Other race news.

  • Press Releases
  • From the Mac Chairman

Posted Jul 14, 2024

CHICAGO, July 14, 2024 – Sanford Burris, William and Ward Kinney’s Maverick team will be etched in Mac Race history as the new race record holder for the fastest Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust in 22 years, earning the honor from Roy E. Disney and Pyewacket .

Maverick also claimed this year’s Royono Trophy for the first racing monohull to finish the 115th edition. This year’s southerly winds and overnight storms created the perfect conditions for an incredible downwind race, which they completed in 22 hours, 24 minutes, 23 seconds, breaking Pyewacket’s record by one hour, six minutes, 11 seconds.

“I will tell you from my perspective, I wish the record had lasted longer, but these things are inevitable,” said Roy P. Disney, Roy E. Disney's son, upon hearing the news. “Given how long it took to break that record shows how difficult a course it is, and what a classic sailboat race it is! Many congratulations to the owner, the crew and the boat, Maverick .”

Burris, from Kirtland, Ohio, sails with his sons and many longtime friends on the carbon fiber Andrews 80 they have spent the past three years upgrading. Joining the 20 crew onboard is Evolution Sails founder Rodney Keenan.

The team celebrated briefly as the Maverick team crossed the Race to Mackinac finish line between Mackinac Island and the Round Island lighthouse … and then kept on sailing.

Maverick is one of 25 sailboats competing in this year’s “Super Mac” race, a combination of the Chicago Mackinac and the Bayview Mackinac races, which means they will continue into Lake Huron, heading south to Port Huron for a total of 565 statute miles (495 nautical miles).

my superyacht crew

What does it take to break the Race to Mackinac record?

Many factors need to align for record-setting conditions, especially over a 333 statute-mile (289 nautical-mile) race that is well known for multiple weather patterns in a short time span. This has earned the race its moniker as “America’s Offshore Challenge.”

“Most important is a southerly wind direction and strength, combined with advancements in boats and sails,” said Winn Soldani, chair for the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust. “Plus you add in last night’s storms that brought increased breeze and it’s literally the perfect setup for a record-breaking year.

“On behalf of the Chicago Yacht Club, we congratulate the Maverick team for an incredible accomplishment.”

This year, the Race put a special emphasis on encouraging and attracting new boats and sailors. Across the 250-strong fleet, 26 new entries (10 percent) and more than 380 sailors (20 percent) are experiencing their first Mac. The Mac Race, known as America’s Offshore Challenge™, begins in front of Chicago’s magnificent skyline and finishes 289 nautical miles (333 statute miles) north on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, at Michigan’s iconic Mackinac Island.

Next year, the Chicago Yacht Club celebrates its 150-year anniversary.

90 Day Fiancé's Michael Ilesanmi Reveals Strategy For Dealing With Angela Deem's Anger After Joining New Family

90 day fiancé’s emily bieberly begins intense training amid weight loss transformation, below deck med star attempts to improve damaged reputation after allegedly faking poor performance.

Captain Glenn Shephard has been at the helm of Below Deck Sailing Yacht from the beginning, and his long-time Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher admitted he favors First Officer Gary King over her at the reunion. Gary and Daisy joined the Below Deck Sailing Yacht cast during season 2, and have an ongoing boatmance on the Parsifal III. Even though their relationship has been through its ups and downs on the show, they have proven to be great at their jobs.

The Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 reunion part 1 recently aired, with an unseen clip added on Peacock . According to the exclusive clip shared by US Weekly , the crew members from the Parsifal III had the opportunity to reveal their honest opinions about Captain Glenn.

When asked by host Andy Cohen if Captain Glenn favors the deck team, Daisy replied, “ I don’t think Glenn favors the deck team. I think honestly, it’s a natural thing in yachting. Glenn is more affiliated with the deck team. ”

Below Deck’s Daisy Says It’s “Okay” Glenn Doesn’t Understand Her Department

In the Below Deck franchise, it's common for the Captain to relate more to the deck team, especially since their jobs are similar. Because of this, Daisy stood by Captain Glenn's decision to favor the exterior crew over the interior crew. “ He understands it more. Honestly, I don’t think he understands my department and that’s okay. It happens across multiple industries ," she noted. Captain Glenn agreed with Daisy's statements after responding to Andy's question about if he knew what the stews do. “ I understand. I guarantee you Daisy has forgotten more about stewing than I will ever know. And I have a better idea of what Gary is up to. "

There is always a divide between the deck team and interior team on most seasons of Below Deck. Captain Sandy Yawn from Below Deck Mediterranean is often hard on the stews, but never criticizes the deck team. However, Captain Glenn doesn't have tendencies to micromanage his crew like Sandy does, and understands that all of his crew members have important jobs on the boat. Since Gary and Daisy have worked with him for three charter seasons now, he knows that their positions on the Parsifal III are valuable.

Now that Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 is coming to an end, the Parsifal III crew members were able to come together and discuss the season at the reunion. While the season involved a lot of drama and multiple love triangles, it still made for great television with its interesting charter guests and scenic destinations. If Gary, Daisy, and Captain Glenn decide to return for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, Captain Glenn will be sure that he can count on them to do their jobs to the best of their ability.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht's Gary King behavior may prevent season five from airing

T he crew members from Bravo 's Below Deck shows are no strangers to controversy, but one star's behavior may be putting a filmed season of his show on the line.

Sexual misconduct scandals plagued Below Deck Down Under, leading to the dismissal of cast members , and others with surprising histories and back stories also found themselves on the chopping block at points as well.

However, crew members from Below Deck Sailing Yacht have been left with more questions than answers about their future-and not because of complicated romances.

  • Below Deck star issued warning to fitire crewmates after failed romance Link
  • Below Deck fans are curious to know just how old Captain Kerry Titheradge is Link

Gary King from the show was accused of sexual misconduct by makeup artist Samantha Suarez in 2023-but still remains attached to the show, with the only known consequences being his removal from BravoCon.

However, while he hasn't officially been fired, his alleged actions are potentially keeping the already filmed fifth season from airing.

Suarez told Rolling Stone in August 2023 that King had allegedly tried to force himself on her during the show's season four production, which filmed in Sardinia, Italy , in 2022.

King has continually denied the allegations.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed he seemingly got defensive about the situation in the comments on his latest Instagram post, where someone commented he had done something "against someone's will," and he quickly responded.

"Against their will, what the f--k are you talking about never have I nor will I ever do anything against anyone's will, get a life and go talk s-t somewhere else. Ps f--k off," he wrote.

On Reddit , fans weren't buying, though, saying he would "never take responsibility" for any of his alleged actions.

"This is the same guy who kept saying Mads lied to him, made him look like an idiot and that she 'never said anything about their relationship being just casual', and that she lead him on," one person wrote. "Cuts to production literally showing all instances where Mads said to him that it was just sex for her. He will never take responsibility for his behavior or actions."

"Gary just doesn't get it. He has horrible impulse control issues around women, but for some reason, otherwise perfectly lovely women like Mads and Daisy reward and reinforce Gary's aggressive arm-grabbing, barreling into and clotheslining around their necks. They like him, and that's their business," another said. "So in his rather simple mind, he thinks he can act like that with all women, and he's confused when women don't like it and find him repulsive."

"He can say what he wants, but the bottom line is that the show is now in jeopardy of being canceled (Sailing not BD). That would not be happening if Bravo didn't feel like the heat of liability is out there," another pointed out.

"It;s really sad because loads of us have waited months for the new season and there's the potential of it not happening because of f---ng scummy Gary! He's hurt someone, and he's not taken our show potentially off the air. I've seen his comments, and it's hundreds of people defending him! It's disgusting!" another said.

"So obviously, Gary got paid for season 5 if its already been recorded, I wonder if they fine him any his salary or if they make him give a portion to charity," they added. "Or is it just 'keep the money, don't call us ever again!"

Bravo has not addressed the allegations against Gary, or what has kept the show's fifth season off the air.

Yacht Engineer Training Courses

MCA Superyacht / SV Engineer training for vessels up to 9000kW and 3000GT

Yacht / SV Engineer Training Overview

Although there are different training routes and licensing authorities/countries under which engineers may qualify to work on superyachts, a common, broadly accepted route is the MCA Engineer Small Vessel Training Route. The MCA recently changed its engineering qualification structure in order to simplify the number and level of qualifications across the industry. They have pulled together pre-existing qualifications, leading to certificates of competency (CoC) restricted to yachts (and other small vessels) only. This single generic qualification is now referred to as " Engineer Officer Small Vessel Certificate of Competency" .

Please consult a recognized training provider before booking any training courses and view the "Engineer Officer Small Vessel of Competency" Marine Information note, found on the MCA website.

Find info, requirements and links to yacht engineer training centres for:

  • Junior / Assistant Engineer
  • 2nd Engineer Officer < 9000kW
  • Chief Engineer Officer < 9000kW

Caucasian Male Superyacht Engineer working on the engine room, inspecting the generator with checklist folder and pen in his hand

Junior / Assistant Engineer:

  • An STCW : EVERY crew member onboard must hold a valid STCW
  • An ENG1 Medical Certificate : EVERY crew member onboard must hold a valid ENG1
  • AEC 1: The Approved Engine Course 1 is an entry-level qualification for the MCA engineering training schedule and is regarded as the first step on the ladder. It is generally a 5-day / 30-hour course that aims to provide candidates with practical basic hands-on training and theoretical knowledge of diesel engines. The main intention of this course is to teach the knowledge to serve in an ENTRY LEVEL capacity in the engineering department or for a crew member primarily working in another department to assist with engineering functions, for example, a deck/engineer. Holding an AEC certificate will allow you to be a chief engineer on a yacht over 24m and less than 200 Gross Tons or act as an assistant engineer on vessels over 200 GT up to 60NM from a safe haven.
  • AEC 2:  The Approved Engine Course II follows on from AEC I knowledge. It contains a more practical element when compared to the AEC I. This course has been designed so that engineering qualifications are transferable between different industry sectors such as yachts, workboats, tugs, fishing vessels and so on and there will no longer be offshore limits.

The AEC is your gateway ticket into becoming an engineer, it is, therefore, essential to hold this qualification, gain sea time and work on your training record book (TRB) in order to progress in the engine room.

A crew member falls off a yacht and dies during a race on the Aegean Sea

  • Copy Link copied

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A French crew member on a boat participating in a yacht race on the Aegean Sea has died after falling overboard in strong winds, Greek officials said Tuesday.

A coast guard statement said the accident occurred late Monday off the eastern island of Kassos. It identified the crew member as a 40-year-old woman. It said a second crew member who went overboard was rescued.

Race organizers said the dead crew member had a severe head injury and efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. The yacht was taking part in the international Aegean 600 that started Sunday.

Organizers said Monday’s severe weather forced 14 of the 69 yachts participating to drop out.

Chicago to Mackinac sailing race record smashed by more than an hour

Maverick racing by the Mackinac Bridge

The Maverick broke a 22-year record in the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race To Mackinac Presented By Wintrust. Chicago Yacht Club Race To Mackinac

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - Before the first boats ever left Navy Pier this weekend, Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac organizers knew the weather forecast would make this 115th competition one of the faster courses in the race’s history - if the sailing crews could avoid the storms forecast to sweep across Lake Michigan.

And while the storms did send at least three damaged boats limping out of the race and caused a man overboard situation, southerly wind conditions were a boon to the frontrunners, creating a downwind drag race and leading to a record-breaking win that smashed the old Race to Mackinac record by more than an hour.

The Maverick’s crew beat Roy P. Disney’s 22-year-old record with a time of 22 hours, 24 minutes, 23 seconds. This bested the Disney heir’s record set in 2002 with Pyewacket by an hour, six minutes and 11 seconds.

The Maverick team was led by Sanford Burris and William and Ward Kinney. The boat also claimed the race’s Royono Trophy for the first racing monohull to finish the 115th edition.

“I will tell you from my perspective, I wish the record had lasted longer, but these things are inevitable,” said Disney, a well-known figure in the sailing world who is the grand-nephew of Walt Disney. “Given how long it took to break that record shows how difficult a course it is, and what a classic sailboat race it is! Many congratulations to the owner, the crew and the boat, Maverick.”

Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac

Nearly 250 boats joined the 333-mile race from Chicago’s Navy Pier to the finish line near Mackinac Island. Known as America’s Offshore Challenge, it’s the world’s longest annual freshwater sailing race. The race is divided into the Cruising Division, which left Chicago on Friday, and the sleeker Racing Division, which began racing on Saturday.

What was the secret to this weekend’s fast times?

“Most important is a southerly wind direction and strength, combined with advancements in boats and sails,” said Winn Soldani, chair for the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust. “Plus you add in last night’s storms that brought increased breeze and it’s literally the perfect setup for a record-breaking year.”

Some of the boats are still finishing the course today. You can see them there on the race tracker.

Maverick’s Sanford Burris is from Kirtland, Ohio. “He sails with his sons and many longtime friends on the carbon fiber Andrews 80 they have spent the past three years upgrading. Joining the 20 crew onboard was Evolution Sails founder Rodney Keenan,” race staff said.

“The team celebrated briefly as the Maverick team crossed the Race to Mackinac finish line between Mackinac Island and the Round Island lighthouse … and then kept on sailing.”

The Maverick is one of a couple dozen sailboats competing in this year’s “Super Mac” race - which means it keeps going instead of stopping at Mackinac Island for the big afterparty. It races south down Lake Huron to reach Port Huron - a race of 495 nautical miles. The Bayview Mackinac Race - which is next week - starts near the Blue Water Bridge and competing sailboats will race north to Mackinac Island. Those boats running the “Super Mac” can also do the Bayview and it’s like running three races in a week’s span.
