About Charleston

Established in 1670, Charleston is packed with over 350 years of history. Some of this history, such as Fort Sumter, can only be accessed via Charleston's waterways. The city has a subtropical climate, ensuring warm weather almost year-round. The sunny summers and mild winters are perfect for boating, no matter the season. A plethora of wildlife calls our coasts home. It is not uncommon to have dolphins escort our charters throughout Charleston's waters.

About our master captains

Steve Woodard  has been around boats all of his life, owning his first sail boat at the tender age of 11. In 2008, he founded  Charleston Charter and Yacht, a family business. He proudly brought luxurious, customized, private charters to the Lowcountry for the first time. Steve has owned 13 boats throughout the years and has been a Master Captain 100 tons for 16 years. His skill, expertise, and experience in maneuvering a variety of vessels ensures you are in extremely capable and caring hands.

Paul Zobel was born in Charleston, spending much of his formative years on the waters around the area. He has had a captains license for over forty years, owning and piloting boats from Miami to NY for many of them. He was Captain of the Port for Dewees Island for ten years, piloting their ferry boats. Capt. Charleston Charter and Yacht is incredibly proud to have Cpt. Paul continuing work on the water with us.

Pete DeBoer is a native of Seattle, Washington and grew up in a boating family. Because he is a retired U.S. Coast Guard officer, his experience in operating boats and ships covers the spectrum from 14 to 378 feet. He has served and worked in the Pacific, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Bering Sea, and the Atlantic - from Trinidad to Martha’s Vineyard. Multitalented, Pete is a singer-songwriter that enjoys playing the guitar. His novel, Heave To , loosely parallels his 3 years of drug enforcement operations on a Charleston based cutter in the early 80’s. When Pete is your captain, it's guaranteed you will probably enjoy a sea story or two.

With more than 95,000 miles of coastline, there are a lot of great places to be a boater in the United States. Charleston, South Carolina, for example. One of the most beautiful cities in America, Charleston has plenty of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean but is also divided by a number of large and small waterways snaking in and around the city’s many islands, including the Stono River, Ashley River, and Cooper River.

There is plenty of great saltwater and freshwater fishing, lots of places to explore by boat, and plenty of room for wakeboarding, or jetskiing, or whatever you love. With several cool winter months, Charleston can give visitors a four-season feeling, but when the sun is shining, it’s hard to imagine a better place to own a powerboat or sailboat. 

What To Know

Charleston has a very big boating community represented by just about any kind of vessel you could want. Center consoles and dayboats have become very common on most waters, but while in Charleston you are also likely to see - 

Easy access to deep Atlantic waters make big sportfish, convertibles, and larger center consoles a common site offshore, but luxury yachts and mid-level cruisers are also plentiful. 

Lots of places to explore, fish, or swim inshore and upriver make pontoon boats, runabouts, deck boats, and bowriders popular, but you will also find lots of flats skiffs and center consoles inshore as well. 

Safety Requirements :

All states have some sort of regulations for boaters and South Carolina is no different. According to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website - 

In South Carolina, boat operators under age 16 must complete a boating course approved by the SCDNR to operate a boat or personal watercraft with a 15 h.p. motor or greater, unless accompanied by an adult age 18 years or older.

Any person under age 12 must wear a US Coast Guard approved Type I, II, III, or V PFD when on board a class “A” (less than 16 ft. long) boat.

Weather Conditions

Charleston has long summers with lots of sun but the days can be hot and humid. Summer highs can hit the low 90s but usually stay closer to 85. Winter temperatures rarely get close to freezing, and Spring and Fall conditions are usually comfortable with lots of 60- and 70-degree days.

Late Spring and early Fall are great times to visit Charleston when temperatures are warm enough to enjoy the water but not hot enough to make air conditioning sound like a better option. 

The Charleston area can see some rare hurricane activity late in the summer, so visitors should always be prepared for the possibility and have a plan just in case.

Things to Do in Charleston by Boat

With the Atlantic’s deep water just outside the harbor, the many rivers feeding into Charleston Harbor, and a wide variety of reefs, flats, and salt marshes, there is no shortage of fishing opportunities in this historic city. Near the coast, buoys, shipwrecks, and reefs hold fish like grouper, cobia, and redfish, while offshore trips can yield tasty mahi-mahi or spectacular sailfish. When the weather doesn’t align with your plans, stay in the rivers and harbor and catch redfish, speckled trout, and black drum. 

Something is biting year-round so check with the local pros and fish reports for the best time to chase your favorite species. Although July through September are considered the best months to fish, there is no “off-season” in Charleston.

Seasonality: May through September are usually the best months

Visit Morris Island

Accessible only by boat, historic Morris Island sits just south of the entrance to Charleston Harbor. The 840-acre island was home to several strategic events during the American Civil War, along with nearby Fort Sumter.

Today, Morris Island features beautiful natural beaches with lots of shells, wildlife, and little else. There are no developments, facilities, or shops on the island, making it a remote getaway with few people around. 

At the southeastern end of the island, 1600 feet from the shoreline, the beautiful and historic Morris Island lighthouse has been watching over the waters around Charleston since 1876. However, the light is off-limits to the public. The water eroding the lighthouse’s perch has made it impossible to get close on foot and dangerous to try. There are plenty of great viewing and photo spots on the main body of Morris Island. 

With no conveniences, it’s important to remember to bring plenty of water, food, and sunscreen and stay hydrated in the summer sun.

Cruise Shem Creek and the Mount Pleasant Waterfront

Located on the northwestern edge of Charleston Harbor inland, Shem Creek winds three miles from the Charleston Harbor and along the Mount Pleasant waterfront until civilization falls away and leaves nothing but wetlands and wildlife. 

The creek winds behind beautiful private homes, the local shrimp fleet, and provides access to dine and dock at several restaurants. Stop for dinner or cruise further up the creek in smaller vessels. 

Pull up to the dock at Shem Creek Park, walk the boardwalk, and be treated to beautiful views of Charleston Harbor and the natural wetlands. The town of Mount Pleasant is a short walk from the water, putting shops, eateries, and other attractions within easy reach of the docks.

Where to Go Boating in Charleston

Ashley River

With 22 miles of water out of 33 designated as a State Scenic River, the Ashely River winds 30 miles inland from CHarleston Harbor past a beautiful city view and into the Charleston Harbor watershed. Filled with natural beauty, the tidal river features a wide variety of natural habitats and 26 national and regional historic sites.

The river waters are great for fishing, swimming, and cruising, or exploring and sightseeing while winding past cypress swamps and salt marshes. There are also a variety of small eateries and shops to see or sample on the trip inland or back to the harbor.

Explore the Low Country

South of Charleston, there is a series of islands and waterways along the Atlantic coast known as the Low Country. Much of it unspoiled and natural, the 125-mile-long group of islands between Charleston and Savannah, GA is filled with wildlife and beauty with countless creeks and rivers to explore. 

Swim, fish, or just cruise in and explore somewhere new, and also enjoy the gorgeous waterways and countless coves, marshes, and wetlands. The Low Country is a beautiful getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Head out to the Atlantic Ocean

Cruise east out of Charleston Harbor and you are in the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Following the coast offshore, there’s a good chance that a pod of dolphin will come play in your boat’s wake or follow along with you just for fun. South, cruise along the South Carolina Low Country and explore the rivers and creeks that lead inland or anchor up and spend some time on the beach at Morris Island or Kiawah Island. Fish, dive, or just drift in the sun for a perfect day on the ocean. 

Remember - the summer sun can be brutal so bring lots of water, snacks, sunscreen, and some shade.

Captain Bob gave us the ride of our weekend - could not have been more friendly, knowledgable, and accommodating. We've done a several similar rides but this was by far the best experience. HIGHLY recommend to both tourists and locals wanting a fun day at sea.

I took my kids out on Captain Jay’s boat who showed us around in the harbor. We saw dolphins, and the kids got to steer the boat too. I highly recommend this tour with Captain Jay or Captain Bob!

“OM” - A Leopard 4300 Catamaran

“OM” is a Leopard 4300 catamaran sailboat – a true blue-water cruiser featuring a full-batten, self-stacking mainsail, 120 percent roller-furling genoa, and twin 40 hp diesel engines. Come sail on Charleston Harbor on this beautiful catamaran sailboat.

Unlike a monohull, a catamaran won’t heel, providing a stable platform and a tremendous amount of space on deck and below.

The cockpit has 360 degrees of visibility from the double helm seat and a hardtop bimini provides shade. In addition, the cockpit has walk-through access to the swim platforms, a large drop leaf table, and lots of seating. A wide door opens to the luxurious saloon.

There is ample storage space throughout the sailboat.

We had a group of 11 people for my bachelorette, the yacht was super spacious and loved having both indoor and outdoor areas to hang out. As any local Charlestonian will tell you, don't let our weather forecasts fool you into missing out on a gorgeous charter or beautiful sunset! Our weather forecasts call for a 30-50% chance of rain nearly every day! If it does rain, it is usually only for a short period during a pop-up shower.

01 Will I get seasick?

Since we stay inside the harbor, protected from larger waves of the open sea, it is unlikely that you would get seasick. The water is calm and the boats are only subjected to large waves created by other boats. Concerned passengers could bring products that contain ginger, such as ginger cookers, or Ginger Ale because they have been known to help calm an upset stomach. Be sure to start taking ginger or any other sea-sickness medications the day before your charter for the best results. We recommend you stay away from the drowsy kinds. Recommendations are provided for informational purposes only. Please consult your physician with any questions regarding a medical condition.

02 Are your yachts safe?

Yes! Our yachts are clean, well-maintained, and fully insured for charter. All of our vessels meet or exceed safety requirements by the United States Coast Guard with onboard equipment that includes Type 1 Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets) for every passenger, an approved Sound Producing Device, fire extinguishers, flares, a VHF radio, & an approved throwable ring buoy. They also meet equipment, operation, and pollution prevention regulations established by the Coast Guard. Vessel Captains possess a valid license issued by the U. S. Coast Guard and undergo random drug screenings.

03 Can I bring more than 6 passengers?

Yes, on our Motor Yacht Kismet, which has been specifically designed to carry up to 23 passengers. You will find 23 to be pretty tight, we recommend keeping the maximum passenger count to under 20. 

The sailing yachts both are limited to 6 passengers, however, you can rent boat sailboats and take 12, having 6 on each boat.

04 Do children or infants count as a passenger?

Yes, they do. The United States Coast Guard considers every person, except for the Captain and crew as a passenger. Children require supervision by parents or guardians at all times and must be capable of remaining calmly seated for several hours. If you are bringing younger children, we recommend a charter length of no longer than 2 hours.

This is not a narrated tour, but more of a way to enjoy the serenity of Charleston Harbor and the soft breezes and beautiful views without having to take in nonstop information. Our crew is very knowledgeable and will be happy to point out landmarks and answer questions, but only if that’s what you desire. This is truly a great way to relax and enjoy your time on the water as we lift our sails the cool breeze will whisk you away to a time care forgot.

Relax and sip wine or another cool beverage as we sail from the Aquarium Wharf and continue sailing past the historic Battery, towards Ft. Johnson and Ft. Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in 1861. Our sailing tour takes you past the USS Yorktown, the storied WWII air craft carrier docked at Patriot's Point, and on past Castle Pinckney, Charleston's old waterfront trading area where the walled city first developed. SERENA Charleston Sailing Vessel

The charleston sailing vessel serena is a 50′ classic sloop designed by bill tripp, and is one of only 12 in the world.

SERENA  offers the best Charleston sailing providing plenty of above deck and below deck space for milling about. Her lifelines encircle the entire length of the vessel and are covered with safety netting.

Also, there is a large cushioned cockpit for seating, a cushioned bench on the fore deck, settee in the salon, and lots of deck cushions. Below decks you will find one queen cabin, one double v-berth cabin, salon, full galley, and head (bathroom).   SERENA  was refit at the Palmer Johnson yard with special attention to her rigging, engine and flag blue Awlgrip hull.

Join Captain John Borden aboard the jewel of Charleston, Sailing Vessel SERENA .  Captain John has been taking    Wild Dunes groups sailing in Charleston since 1992. He not only holds a degree in literature from the University of  North Carolina, he is a published author, and also studied at Oxford University and the University of Munich. John has sailed everything from catamarans to brigantines spanning both the East & West coasts of the United States, Bahamas, Eastern Caribbean including the Virgin Islands, Leewards & Windwards, as well as running a tall ship in Australia.  While in the Mediterranean Captain John even had an opportunity to sail ENDEAVOUR , the 130′ 1934 America’s Cup Challenger.

Captain Glen Appelbaum hails originally from South Africa, and has been a resident of Charleston for many years.  Glen is an accomplished racer and loves the water so much he lives aboard his own sailboat!  In addition to making a Trans-Atlantic crossing and working as a rescue boat operator, Captain Glen is a yacht broker as well as a Charter Boat Captain.
