Launched in 2015, luxury motor yacht SEA LOOK is the fourth 102' Flyingsport series vessel, built by the Italian shipyard, Cantieri Navali Cerri (CNN). Combining the comfort of a flying bridge yacht and the sporty character as well as speed of large open crafts, superyacht SEA LOOK can be characterized by elegance, style, functionality and onboard liveability.

SEA LOOK Specifications

Superbly penned by architect Filippo Rossi, the interiors of luxury yacht SEA LOOK are inspired by the natural landscapes and elements of Sardinia: sand, rock, north-westerly wind, the waves, the turquoise sea. The soft harmony of the light colour shades brings a pleasant, relaxing contrast with the bright colours typical of the days spent at sea. All interiors are extremely bright, thanks to a central skylight, characterised by a highly innovative profile. This allows to notably increase the height of the main salon, letting light shine through and flood the entire room.

Built in composite, the fourth 102' Flyingsport super yacht SEA LOOK is run by twin powerful MTU 16V2000M94 diesels, reaching a thrilling top speed of 37 knots. She can comfortably cruise at 32 knots.

Motor Yacht

SeaLook is a semi-custom motor yacht launched in 2015 by CCN in Carrara, Italy.

It was true, deep love for the sea and for yachts that, in 1997, spurred Carlo Cerri to invest his huge experience as a successful businessman into building the world-class powerboat Cerri 28: limited size, a painstaking care for details, functionality, ergonomics, clean lines and finely-finished pleasant interiors were some of the keys to this motor boat’s huge success.

SeaLook measures 31.10 metres in length, with a max draft of 1.80 feet and a beam of 7.25 feet.

SeaLook has a GRP hull with a GRP superstructure.

Her exterior design, naval architecture and interior design is by CCN.

SeaLook is a semi-custom Cerri 102' Flyingsport model.

Performance and Capabilities

SeaLook has a top speed of 37.00 knots and a cruising speed of 32.00 knots. She is powered by 2 diesel engines.

SeaLook has a fuel capacity of 10,000 litres, and a water capacity of 2,000 litres.

Other Specifications

SeaLook has a hull NB of 102/05.

Boat of the Week: This Wave-Piercing 75-Foot Explorer Yacht Is Designed to Dominate Stormy Seas

With her wave-piercing hull and bulletproof windshield, "enmer" takes on the roughest waters and still works as a stylish, comfy cruiser., howard walker, howard walker's most recent stories.

This 75-foot yacht was designed to travel in the roughest seas

It’s a boater’s worst nightmare. Howling 40-knot winds churning-up near-vertical 20-feet walls of frothing sea. Add to the maelstrom a vicious rip-tide, horizontal rain and menacing coal-black skies. Definitely not a good day for a cocktail cruise around the bay.

This was the punishing sea-trial inflicted on the newly christened Enmer , a no-nonsense 75-foot XSV20 explorer yacht, before being delivered to her new owner, French billionaire and passionate yachtsman Jack Setton.

Even the delivery was extreme. Before Monsieur Setton was handed the keys, Enmer went on a 2,500-mile, high-speed blast from builder Safehaven Marine’s yard in Cork, Ireland, to her new slip in ritzy Porto Cervo, Sardinia.

Now, after more than a year of cruising the Med and Caribbean, Setton has decided to sell the military-grade Enmer – the name is French for “At Sea,” with an asking price of about $2.35 million. “It’s time for me to lose a lot of money, which I seem to do regularly with my boats, and let someone else enjoy her,” Setton told Robb Report .

Setton’s past acquisitions have included the rugged 194-foot expedition yacht Senses , the 60-foot high-performance sailing yacht Ciao Gianni , named after his close friend, the late Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli, and the record-shattering 110-foot “Maxi” catamaran Swift . After his last “project,” the converted 105-foot Texas commercial fishing boat Pink Shrimp, which Setton transformed it into a luxurious world traveler, the Frenchman went looking for something equally rugged, but faster.

Setton found it in the XSV20, with an innovative, wave-piercing hull, thundering 51-mph top speed and go-anywhere capability. “I’ve always loved boats that look rugged on the outside but are comfortable inside—boats with no frills that I know will get the job done,” he says.

The serial yacht owner worked with Safehaven to fine-tune the design, installing twin 1,150-hp Cat C18s hooked-up to waterjets. For Setton, the goal was less complexity, easier maintenance and better low-speed maneuverability. Those factors were important since it would be primarily Setton and his girlfriend who would cruise on the boat.

What didn’t change was the XSV20’s unique hull design. It starts as a carbon fiber and Kevlar-reinforced mono hull with a knife-like, wave-piercing bow. This then flows back into a deep-V mid-section, then seamlessly transitions into twin, catamaran-style hulls. He used inch-thick ballistic glass for the forward windows to provide extra protection for the wheelhouse.

Not a fan of boats that careen over waves, Setton designed a unique ballasting system. “It keeps the nose down, so the boat acts like a submarine, punching straight through the waves,” he says. “We experienced some bad conditions in the Med and it took everything incredibly well.”

Though fast, Setton prefers to run at slower speeds. “Yes, she’ll get up to 51 mph but she’s a lot happier at 40,” he says. Come down to 30 mph and she’ll cover over 600 nautical miles without refueling. You have a lot of performance and range.”

The interior was designed to be simple, yet comfortable enough for long cruises. Below decks, there’s a master suite, a guest cabin and crew quarters in the bow. When the seas turn gnarly, the pilothouse features four SHOXS commercial-grade, shock-absorbing helm and passenger seats for safety and comfort.

Setton thinks the next owner will either be someone looking for a boat to turn heads cruising into St. Tropez or an experienced sailor looking for adventures. “I need someone who is as passionate about the boat as I am,” he says. “I admit that I have turned down buyers in the past who didn’t understand what my boats were about. I’m optimistic I’ll find the right person.”

Bespoke Suite Designs Focused on Comfort, Connection and Care

In collaboration with Tillberg Design of Sweden and the Yacht’s Creative Director, Prosper Assouline, the Yacht’s suite design embodies the essence of intuitive luxury, each a sanctuary of tranquility with panoramic views, elegant interiors, thoughtful details and a residential feel that creates the sense of a welcoming home at sea.

"Our goal was to craft an environment that feels both familiar and extraordinary, with warm hues and open designs. We are creating an inviting, welcoming environment that reflects the same feeling one experiences at a Four Seasons hotel or resort," says Fredrik Johannson, Partner and Executive Director of Tillberg Design of Sweden. “At the same time, we are designing a look and feel that is unique to this project, creating an elegant yet simple interior that stands out on its own, while blending beautifully with the majestic seas that will surround it.”

With 50% more living space per guest than currently available with any competitor at sea, all suites will offer floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing sweeping sea views, double vanity bathrooms with spacious showers and closets, expansive private terraces, and dynamic use of space and light.

The Yacht’s extensive network of adjoining suites will feature an innovative system that connects accommodations with modular walls, offering numerous options of vertical and horizontal combinations within the signature suites. This versatility will unlock more than 100 different connection options and the unique opportunity to reserve an entire side of a deck, perfect for those travelling with family, friends, or larger groups. For example, this one-of-a-kind design will allow for more than 13,000 square feet (1,200 square metres) of total living space.

A New Suite Standard: Funnel and Loft Suites

The largest accommodations are seven signature suites ranging from 2,981 to 9,975 square feet (277 to 927 square metres) of indoor and outdoor living space. They offer two to three bedrooms, separate living rooms, indoor and outdoor dining space, splash pools, outdoor showers, and the option to connect to additional suites.

The premier signature suite accommodations – the Funnel and Loft Suites – both feature three bedrooms, outdoor showers, and splash pools. The largest on board, the Funnel Suite, housed within the Yacht’s glass-enclosed funnel, is 9,975 square feet (927 square metres), spanning four levels of living space. The suite’s towering floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows, made up of the largest contiguous piece of glass at sea, is a one-of-a-kind engineering feat offering stunning 280-degree panoramic views. The Loft Suite is 7,952 square feet (739 square metres) and can accommodate large group sizes of up to 20 people by connecting with seven additional suites, the largest number of connecting suites available.

When exploring beyond the comforts of their stunning suites, guests can enjoy 11 dining options, spa and wellness offerings, a state-of-the-art transverse marina, and the stern pool, set to be one of the largest in the industry at nearly 19 metres long and 5 metres wide (65 feet long and 18 feet wide). Sea Eagle – a true sailor’s superyacht

Three years after a low-key launch, captain mike douglass discusses the striking schooner as it embarks on a busy charter schedule….

yacht sea look

Delivered in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, Sea Eagle ’s arrival on the superyacht scene was, as even Royal Huisman admits, ‘low-key’ compared with the stature it has now gained in the upper bracket of sailing superyachts.

TSG caught up with the stunning 81-metre schooner as it was completing a yard period at STP Palma ahead of a busy charter season. Cutting an imposing figure at the end of the dock, Sea Eagle has very few contemporaries for true comparison, whichever way you look at it.

As the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht, it takes its place in the top 10, alongside Huisman’s Athena . A contentious list at the best of times, the key criterion that elevates Sea Eagle relates to the word ‘sailing’. Sea Eagle ’s comparatively light weight, long waterline and powerful, yet manageable, Panamax rig ensure it lives up to the cliché of being ‘a true sailing yacht’.

Originally built for a discerning owner with blue-water cruising and private usage in mind, it’s now under new ownership and ready to make a bigger splash. At the time of writing, it’s in Sweden, where it will spend the summer cruising the Nordic region before returning to the Mediterranean in late September.

yacht sea look

According to Royal Huisman, the original brief for Sea Eagle was to “create an extremely comfortable and spacious yacht with good seakeeping and exceptional amenities for both guests and crew, offering outstanding passage-making performance so that the owner could take in as much of the world under sail as possible. A true sailor’s yacht – practical, powerful, safe and easily managed. Finally, it had to be functional, favouring simplicity and reliability over unnecessary frills.”

A walkthrough of the yacht clearly reveals that this brief has certainly been followed. The guest accommodation is spacious but not excessive. Undoubtedly, the designers could have taken more space for the owners’ areas, considering the available volume. Instead, it’s obvious that it has been intelligently used to provide the necessary storage, working areas and crew accommodation to fulfil the rest of its brief: that of an efficient world cruiser.

yacht sea look

In the pantheon of very large sailing yachts, Sea Eagle is in the minority. It may seem like a misnomer, but a dirty secret of some large sailing yachts is that they don’t sail as much as their smaller cousins or common conception suggests.

The reasons for this are manifold. A combination of the extreme forces at play, the danger associated with accidents and the high cost of replacement and associated lead times in case of mishaps can leave crew skittish when it comes to hoisting solely for the purposes of a passage.

“ Sea Eagle has sailed over 55,000 miles in the first three years,” says its captain, Mike Douglass. “A lot of that has been under sail and without engines. It handles very well, and having the confidence to do these passages with very little engine use is a testament to the build quality.”

A contributing factor to this confidence is the fact that the massive sail area (2,580 sq m/27,770 sq ft upwind; 3,552 sq m/38,233 sq ft downwind) is spread over three masts. The hoisting and furling time is roughly equivalent to a sloop of 50 metres, meaning managing this kind of sail set-up is not as daunting as it may have been half a generation ago.

Behind this ability is the energy-generation and management system. Electrical and hydraulic power come mainly from the twin generators. In addition, there is a hydraulic take-off from each main engine and peak shaving from the powerful battery bank, resulting in a significant volume of hydraulic capacity (500kW) – well in excess of requirements to hoist fore, main and mizzen sails simultaneously.

The 60-metre carbon Rondal masts, as with all that leave the Rondal factory, are built in one piece. The carbon-fibre roller furling booms, captive reel and drum winches, and flush deck hatches were also manufactured by Rondal, while continuous carbon-fibre standing rigging was supplied by Carbo-Link. The sail plan is then managed by Rondal’s Integrated Sail Handling System which interfaces spars, rigging, winches and sailing hardware in a custom configuration.

yacht sea look

“Environmental impact reduction is better achievable when the vessel is responsive to the breeze and can sail by wind to the desired destination,” says Erik Wassen, of Dykstra Naval Architects . “The powerful rig geometry of Sea Eagle can be quickly adapted to the conditions encountered, allowing her to safely sail for proportionately more miles of the journey.”

Douglass adds, “When you look down the line of the great Huisman sailing yachts using similar rigs – Blue Papillon , Hyperion – they are tried and tested. We’re just running three of them side by side.”

Sea Eagle ’s Panamax rigs are integral to its world-cruising credentials. The ability to transit the Panama Canal (while fitting under the Bridge of the Americas with a 61-metre clearance) means the yacht can sail from the Caribbean to the Pacific without the arduous trip around Cape Horn.

After a planned Caribbean charter season, and hopefully a racing schedule, that’s exactly where it will head. As with increasing numbers of intrepid yachts, the wilds of Central and South America await.

Large sailing yachts are idiosyncratic, none more so than Sea Eagle . They appeal to a smaller section of the charter market and have to contend with a smaller pool of prospective clients. And, at 550,000 euros per week (via Burgess as the sole CA), it’s at the sharp end of the sailing charter market.

“I have no doubt that what Sea Eagle offers more than overcomes this price point,” says Douglass. “We have a very experienced charter crew and some great sailors. The space on board, the comfort underway and the experience that we can offer, compared to what the same price gets you in the motoryacht market, it’s incomparable.”

yacht sea look

Having been on the build crew and eventually captaining sailing yacht Vertigo , the 2011 67-metre Alloy Yachts ketch, through one of the busiest sail charter programmes imaginable, as well as more recently the 83-metre Abeking & Rasmussen motoryacht Secret , Douglass understands the finer points of successful sailing charters.

“There are minor adjustments that need to be made,” says Douglass. “For example, with a six-metre draft like we have on Sea Eagle , it’s vital to explain to guests who may not have experience on sailing yachts our limitations versus opportunities. We may not be able to get all the way into this bay, but we can offer this other experience in return.”

There are other subtleties that set Sea Eagle apart – less glamorous than the sailing capability but no less vital for its global chartering aspirations. The Pacific specifically tests the boundaries of a conscientious vessel’s garbage-management systems. Ironically, many will run out of cold storage before they run out of fuel. Having systems in place to manage overlooked factors such as this is vital to effective and low-impact chartering.

As experienced charter brokers will tell you, aligning the right client with the right boat in the right place is tough. Many owners are taking their yachts on global programmes that are redefining yachting’s global boundaries. is looking to follow suit.

However, the bread and butter of the charter market remains the Mediterrranean/Caribbean split season. Attracting clients to the furthest reaches of the Pacific, although richly rewarding for those willing, is still a challenge.

“Rather than sporadically picking up charters, the vision we have is to slowly build a network of charter guests that have an emotional investment in the yacht and are interested in its programme – people who have been on board, perhaps in the more traditional destinations, who we can share the yacht’s plans with and look 12 to 24 months down the line,” concludes Douglass.

“We are embarking on a busy and challenging programme. It’s great to have an owner who’s open to discussion and happy to let the expertise, both on board and in various fields or regions, guide us. Our approach is always to assess the process and make sure we are operating the boat as safely and effectively as possible.”

What to Look for on a Sea Trial

boat sea trial

If you are in the process of buying a boat, a sea trial should be an important part of your to-do list. However, what to look for during this test run isn’t always clear to novice boaters.

In this article, we shed light on some of the most crucial aspects of a sea trial . We cover what to expect on a sea trial – things you should look for, how to prepare for it, and how to conduct it effectively.

We explained marine surveys and their types in other articles on this blog.

Table of Contents

What is a Sea Trial? | What does a sea trial consist of?

A sea trial is a test run to assess the performance of a new or used boat and prove its seaworthiness. It is when you take a boat that you plan to buy on the body of water you wish to use, such as a freshwater lake or ocean.

After a major refit or repair, you may also conduct a sea trial on your own boat. The main idea behind this activity is to use the vessel the same way you intend to use it post-purchase, taking special note of how well it performs. A typical sea trial consists of the following :

  • Creating a “real-life” environment on the boat to accurately replicate a normal day.
  • Testing performance targets and inquiring about horsepower options.
  • Playing the role of both passenger and driver to get an in-depth feel of the boat
  • Bringing the boat to 30 MPH, performing a hard turn, and testing conditions in rough waters if possible.

Why is a Sea Trial Important? | Is a sea trial necessary?

A sea trial is one of the most important steps in the boat-buying process, as it uncovers any hidden concerns you may have overlooked.

By testing the vessel in person and seeing how it performs under different conditions, you can ensure it is worth investing in. This is especially true if you are buying a used boat . Even if the boat seems perfect from the surface, you should still get a feel for how it rides the water and what your line of sight will be while standing by the helm.

It all about safety!

How Does a Sea Trial Work?

During a sea trial, you essentially take the vessel on the water and operate it like you normally would on a typical boating trip. This includes riding it at different speeds, maneuvering on varying water conditions, and putting extra weight on the board.

Even though it is generally a fun experience, you shouldn’t get too carried away with the excitement of a new boat.

Make sure your focus lies on how well the boat performs (not accessories), and take notes to compile a sea trial report for future reference.

For a professional opinion, you may consider taking along a marine surveyor , industry expert, or mechanic who can properly examine the boat and compile a report. Such specialists are trained to detect potential problems that may not necessarily be visible to you.

Make sure the specialist is part of an association so you don’t get taken for a boat ride!

What Should You Look for During a Sea Trial Process? | Boat Sea Trial Checklist

The following checklist will help you do a detailed inspection of the boat, both on land and on water.

  • Interior: Inspect the interior of the boat with a keen eye. Observe any wooden work or upholstery for overlooked damage, such as chips, tears, or scratches.
  • Exterior: Pay close attention to surface damage, including paint chips, corrosion, or cracks. Check the propeller for damage.
  • Moving components: Check the functionality of the moving elements, such as doors and windows. Do they open easily? Are there any loose cables? Are the safety mountings in place?
  • Smell: Smell can be a good indicator if something is amiss with the boat. For example, a musky mildew smell could indicate a mold infestation, or an excessive fuel smell could mean a leakage.
  • Seating: Check if the seating is enough to meet your cruising needs.
  • Electronics: Make sure the electronics on the boat are fully functional and in good condition.
  • Steering : Check if you can steer the boat quickly and efficiently. Count the times you need to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. 3 to 4 times indicate a quick response, but anything more could be bad news. Focus on maneuverability.
  • Speed : Accelerate the boat and see how it feels and whether it makes unusual noises. Shift the throttle and note how the speed holds and moves through every transition. Lastly, make multiple turns while going at each speed. The slower the planning speed, the better.
  • Maneuverability : This refers to how easy or difficult it is to move the boat around on the water. Observe any factors that hinder the performance, such as currents or strong winds, jarring movements, or uneven steering. Do a variety of turns, including right and left turns, full-circle turns, docking and backing in, etc.
  • Sounds : While it is common for vessels to make noise, certain sounds are big red flags. For example, loud clunking or rattling when starting the boat isn’t normal. Similarly, if the engine makes powerful vibrations, cracking, or thumping noises, that could indicate something serious. Start when the vessel is cold to check the engine for unusual sounds.

How long do sea trials last?

A sea trial procedure can last for a few hours . Every boat dealership has guidelines and rules for conducting sea trials, so discuss your expectations with them beforehand. If you need more time to test a boat on water before deciding, ask about their policies.

During this time, your marine surveyor or boat dealer may also discuss some limitations due to liability and insurance laws.

How much does a sea trial cost?

A sea trial typically involves towing a boat in and out of the water, which can cost anywhere from $100 to $1500 each way, depending on the size of the boat. Sometimes you need a captain. If you hire a marine surveyor, you can expect to pay between $18 and $25 per foot , typically including an out-of-water check, a system test, a sea trial, and a detailed survey report.

The exact cost will vary depending on your chosen surveyor and the length & type of vessel in question. Just make sure to pick someone well versed in this type or make of vessel.

Who pays for a sea trial? (debatable)

Generally, sellers are responsible for financing the commissioning of the boat, a sea trial as part of the marine survey, and launching the boat…etc. Everything is negotiable yes, but the sea trial is only to be done with serious buyers as a final acceptance.

Do it after a deposit is paid too and bring the surveyor along on the sea trial. Doing many sea trials can be expensive for a seller if people are “just shopping”.

As a buyer , you will be responsible for paying for the marine survey and inspection, so make sure to opt for a reputable and state-approved or certified marine surveyor.

There is much debate on this but, to avoid any confusion, spell it out on the bill of sale and purchase agreement for the boat.

Sample sea trial survey report

A sea trial survey report confirms that a vessel has undergone a sea trial at a specific date at the buyer’s request. It generally consists of the vessel’s details, onboard check, engine check , and other key observations made during the trial.

Listed below are two detailed samples of a sea trial survey.

What a sea trial doesn’t tell you | Caveats to a Marine Survey

While it is important to conduct a sea trial for a vessel before investing in it, there are certain limitations that buyers must be aware of. A sea trial only tells you the physical state of the vessel and uncovers any potential problems related to its performance. However , it doesn’t uncover any important information regarding the vessel’s history , past ownership, or validity of current paperwork.

To ensure that the boat you wish to buy is legit and has no questionable past, you will need a Boat-Alert.com history report to complement your marine survey.

This report will give you immediate access to critical information such as the boat’s name, value, lien information, pollution incidents, factory recalls, theft, auction data, and accidents.

You can perform a HIN lookup on the website by yourself – All you need to do is enter the HIN of the boat you want to buy in the tool’s search bar to check its titling/registration details.

Tips for Buying a Boat

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your yacht sea trial .

  • Bring along your friends and family. This will help you understand what the boat will be like on a normal sailing day. This means riding it at full-fuel levels, with the added weight of passengers. Plus, you will be able to hear the thoughts of your loved ones and whether they notice anything concerning.
  • Ask for help. If you are unsure what to do during a sea trial, ask as many questions as possible. If you are concerned about an issue, contact a marine specialist and get a second opinion.
  • Spend some time as the driver and the passenger. This will help you get a comprehensive feel of the boat from all possible angles.
  • Do a background search on the dealer and the boat . Use Boat-Alert.com to perform an online HIN lookup to be sure of the boat’s legitimacy.

In this article, we discussed what to look for on a sea trial, the importance of conducting a sea trial, and other steps to follow when buying a boat . We also discussed the limitations of a sea trial and the need to supplement it with a Boat-Alert boat history report .

Four Seasons loyalists have a lot to be excited about, with the launch of the brand’s first yacht nearing in 2026.

The 14-deck luxury vessel, which is partly being modeled off of Aristotle Onassis’ iconic yacht Christina O , will offer some of the most opulent amenities at sea. Initial renderings released in October 2023 show a 66-foot saltwater pool, a marina deck built for swimming and watersports, sophisticated dining concepts, and 95 guest suites. Now, the Four Seasons has released the first renderings showcasing the spacious suites on board—and we got a first look.

The ship's sleek design seeks to translate “the Four Seasons guest experience in terms of comfort level and the luxury standards" to life at sea, Fredrik Johannson, partner and executive director of Tillberg Design of Sweden and the lead designer on the Four Seasons Yacht, tells Condé Nast Traveler. Even the hotel group’s beloved mattresses will be offered in every room.

The first renderings of the Four Season Yacht's suites were released Tuesday, showcasing spacious guest rooms with ocean views.

Also just revealed: the first destinations the yacht will call upon throughout its inaugural year. Passengers can expect to visit a wide variety of exclusive and jet-setting locales, as the yacht is slated to visit more than 130 destinations across 30 countries in its first year alone. And of course, guests will have the option to book pre-and-post cruise extensions at iconic Four Seasons resorts along the way.

“We’re incredibly proud to announce the first itineraries aboard Four Seasons Yachts, and know that these experiences will exceed our guest expectations when we set sail in 2026,” says Alejandro Reynal, Four Seasons President and CEO.

Each voyage calls upon small ports that are typically considered “yacht playgrounds," Thatcher Brown, the Chief Commercial Officer at Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings LTD and co-owner of Four Seasons Yachts, tells Traveler. Passengers can expect to sail between Caribbean and Mediterranean coastal havens almost exclusively visited by private vessels .

When the yacht launches in January 2026, it will first head to the Caribbean, where it will complete seven-night, island-hopping itineraries between St. Barths, Nevis, the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curaçao, and Aruba.

Then in March 2026, the ship will cross the Atlantic and begin sailing its Grand Mediterranean voyages , which include visits to alluring towns in Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey. Travelers can also expect to access “under-the-radar” Greek islands , like Ios and Milos, as well as more popular Grecian destinations like Athens and Santorini, according to a Four Seasons release.

Guests will have the option to adjoin suites to accommodate families or other groups traveling together.

Sure the destinations sound glamorous—but it might be difficult for passengers to depart the ship and leave behind the luxe accommodations on board. Specifically the guest suites—which will offer 50% more living space per guest than any other competitor currently at sea, according to the company’s release.

Each space will offer floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the sea, bathrooms with double vanities, and large closets. “Almost every single bed on this whole yacht is facing the sea,” Johannson says. “All the rooms there have this clarity to them. They are very exclusive, but they have a beautiful simplicity.”

Every suite will also offer private outdoor terraces. What’s more: guests will have the option to adjoin suites to accommodate families or other groups traveling together. There are more than 100 different adjoining configurations, including the option to reserve the entire side of a deck—an opportunity that would afford a group of travel companions more than 13,000 square feet of living space.

The Four Seasons Yacht will be divided between Funnel and Loft Suites, each with private outdoor terraces.

But the true showstopper on board is sure to be the Funnel Suite. Located on the very top deck where the funnel or smokestack would traditionally be, the Funnel Suite is essentially the ship’s penthouse, spanning four floors and 9,975 square feet. The massive space will feature three bedrooms and a terrace with outdoor dining space, splash pool, and outdoor showers. But the suite’s best amenity will be its views. The four-story, floor-to-ceiling windows have been fitted with the largest piece of contiguous curved glass at sea, offering sweeping 280-degree views of the ocean as the yacht sails from port to port.

Voyages on board the Four Seasons yacht haven’t yet opened for general booking, but interested travelers can join the yacht’s waitlist in hopes of securing one of the elegant suites on the 2026 itineraries.

The new Four Seasons yacht will set sail in 2026.

Four Seasons has long set the gold standard for luxury accommodations on land and is renowned for its exquisite hotels that offer unparalleled comfort and service. Now, this legacy of luxury is extending its reach to the seas. In a groundbreaking move, Four Seasons Yachts , in collaboration with Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings Ltd and the esteemed Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, is introducing an ambitious venture into luxury sea travel. Scheduled to set sail in 2026, this initiative promises an experience that transcends traditional cruising, offering voyages across the mesmerizing waters of the Caribbean and the historic coasts of the Mediterranean.

Alejandro Reynal, President and CEO of Four Seasons, expressed enthusiasm about bringing the brand's hallmark of guest-centered luxury to the high seas. According to Reynal, this expansion into yachting is a natural extension of Four Seasons' commitment to providing personalized, elegant, and comfortable experiences. The aim is clear: to redefine luxury hospitality, but this time, against the backdrop of the world's most stunning seascapes.

The suites are breathtaking.

The inaugural season of Four Seasons Yachts is poised to offer something truly special. With ten unique voyages planned, travelers will have the opportunity to explore over 130 distinct destinations across more than 30 countries and territories. Each itinerary has been meticulously crafted, allowing guests the flexibility to design their own sea adventure. From the lively atmospheres of Caribbean islands like Saint Barthélemy and Martinique to the cultural richness of Mediterranean gems, including the Greek Isles and Croatia, these voyages promise a blend of well-loved destinations and hidden treasures.

The spacious cabins have incredible views.

Accommodations aboard the yacht are set to be a marvel in themselves. Ninety-five suites, conceived by the creative minds of Fredrik Johannson at Tillberg Design of Sweden and Creative Director Prosper Assouline, are designed to be sanctuaries of tranquility at sea. Each suite, envisioned with elegant interiors, expansive views, and a residential feel, aims to provide guests with a sense of being at home away from home. Among these, the Funnel and Loft Suites stand out for their sheer luxury and space. They offer unique features such as splash pools, outdoor showers, and breathtaking panoramic views, setting a new benchmark for luxury accommodations on water.

The pool deck features a bar and lounge chairs.

Beyond the exquisite suites, the yacht will feature various amenities designed to cater to every guest's needs. With eleven dining options, a comprehensive spa and wellness center, a state-of-the-art marina, and an innovative pool area capable of hosting events, the yacht ensures a variety of experiences that enrich the journey.

“We’re building a stunning seafaring venture that will be enjoyed as a yacht experience rather than a cruise experience," says Thatcher Brown, chief commercial officer and head of joint operations at luxury shipping specialist Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings, the joint owner/operator of the Four Seasons Yachts brand. "The intrinsic value of Four Seasons brand leadership in luxury hospitality combined with the passionate pioneering spirit and expertise of the project team is manifested in the creation of truly special Four Seasons Yachts experiences."

Sea Eagle II: The inside story of the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht

Yachting World

  • June 17, 2020

Rupert Holmes talks to the build and design teams behind the 81m Royal Huisman flagship Sea Eagle II, which recently completed her sea trials off the coast of the Netherlands

Royal Huisman has an enviable track record of producing superlative sailing superyachts , with hundreds of projects completed to date. Yet the latest vessel to leave the shipyard is extraordinary even by these standards. She is the world’s largest aluminium yacht and is one of the top ten biggest sailing yachts ever built.

Sea Eagle II is a magnificent 81m/266ft three-masted Panamax schooner, created by the same Dykstra and Mark Whiteley Design collaboration that produced the stunning 56m/186ft Royal Huisman ketch Aquarius just over a year ago.

Her very experienced owner has sailed all his life and spent a lot of time at sea. “ Sailing around the world in the weekends is a phrase often used to outline his days on board,” says Royal Huisman project manager Arjo Spans. He is also a repeat client – the original Sea Eagle is a 43m/143ft Frers/Rhoades Young design launched by the Dutch yard in 2015.

Initially the brief for the new boat was for a more classical yacht, similar to the 79m/259ft three-masted gaff schooner Athena , which Royal Huisman built for Silicon Valley mogul Jim Clark in 2004. However, the owner quickly realised he would prefer a more modern yacht: a fast-looking hull shape with straight lines, long waterline and plumb bow. The concept of Sea Eagle II was born.

“Having worked with him to build the original Sea Eagle , we understood the owner’s priorities from the start,” says Spans. “These are: low maintenance, functionality, and safety, including ease of moving around the yacht, even when heeled at sea.

“For each of the key aspects of the boat he asked for three proposals, he would then choose one of them and leave us to implement it,” Spans adds. “He put a huge amount of trust in the shipyard and in our craftsmanship.”

Royal Huisman reveals 116ft ‘floating resort’ catamaran superyacht concept

“This is not a change in direction; it is an expansion of possibilities,” says Jan Timmerman, CEO of the 136-year-old…

The scale of this yacht is nothing short of astounding. The sleek hull lines belie the 4m/13ft freeboard and the two-tier deckhouse, including a half-raised bridge, looks entirely in proportion. The main deck-level accommodation has a huge expanse of glass, with the 360º view interrupted only by minimal mullions. There are also acres of cockpit space, with room left over for a long sweep of uncluttered aft deck.

Mark Whiteley was responsible for developing the interior and refining the exterior styling. He created a simple and modern style for the interior, with straight lines. Lacquered Alpi walnut wall panels, brushed natural oak floors and dark stained wenge trims are complemented by light colour leather handrails and upholstered wall panels.

Part of the brief was for the yacht to be able to host business meetings – the forward part of the superstructure therefore includes a large saloon with expansive seating, plus a 16-seat table for formal dining.

A technical challenge

Dykstra Naval Architects drew a narrow and efficient hull shape with a maximum beam of only 12.4m/40ft, while displacement has been kept down to a relatively light 1,050 tonnes at full load. The final shape was achieved following extensive computational flow dynamics (CFD) calculations, velocity prediction programming (VPP), and testing in both tow tanks and wind tunnels. These all helped to determine sail balance, keel position and predicted rudder angles.

The plumb bow is balanced by a modest, but graceful, stern overhang, with a contemporary, relatively wide transom at deck level. Twin knuckle lines extend aft from near the bow, merging into one amidships and then forming a chine aft. Right aft the hull has negative curvature on the flare below the chine, which gives interesting reflections in the gleaming paintwork.

The lead naval architect, Dykstra’s Erik Wassen, told me he introduced the knuckle lines to give the hull “a bolder and more interesting shape.” The owner liked the concept and Mark Whiteley helped to refine the detail. Wassen describes the underwater shape as being: “a very modern round bilge shape, with a nice slender hull that gives good sailing capabilities.” Appendages are a conventional fin keel and balanced rudder.

Photo: Priska van der Meulen

The latter presented an interesting technical challenge, according to Wassen. Initially they looked at fabricating the rudder stock in steel, but that alone would weigh three tonnes. Screening a number of alternatives led to a decision to use carbon for the stock, with a foam core section clad in a relatively thin composite skin for the blade.

The result is what it’s producer, Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal, believes to be the biggest ever carbon rudder, weighing only 1,250kg, which helps to keep weight out of the ends of the boat. The weight saving here also enabled the intended fore and aft trim to be achieved with the ballast in its optimal location.

The rudder includes load sensors to record and verify torque, side forces and bending moment while sailing. “There is not much load data available for rudders of this size of sailing yacht, so it’s very conservatively engineered,” says Spans. Fibre-optic sensors are incorporated to enable a database to be created that will help with designing future composite rudders for very large yachts.

Due to the distance of the helm stations from the rudder, the steering is via an electric-hydraulic system, which means there’s no feedback from the helm. The plan is to investigate whether data from the sensors can be used in a feedback system to give a more natural feel to steering the boat under sail.

Structural engineering

This is one of the most interesting elements of yacht design, yet is all too often under appreciated. Extensive modelling showed a couple of unexpected problems that needed clever solutions during Sea Eagle II ’s design and engineering.

Instead of the hull flexing smoothly under load, like an I-beam, the presence of a forward intermediate deck introduced hard spots in this area, resulting in stress concentrations at the forward end of the superstructure. This required a lot of design work to create a smooth transition of stress from the lower deck to the intermediate one and then on to the upper deck.

worlds-largest-aluminium-sailing-yacht-81m-royal-huisman-sea-eagle-II-cad

Structural engineering was extensively modelled for Sea Eagle II

The roof of the superstructure also posed a challenge, in that the inside surface of a beam needs to become shorter as it flexes. But the original plan for the aluminium roof wasn’t able to accommodate this, with the result the modelling showed stresses concentrating in the corners of the mullions and in the glass itself.

The solution was to avoid welding the top of the mullions to the roof, opting instead for a flexible joint that allows for movement when necessary. Wassen likens it to the joints in large buildings that need to be included to allow for thermal expansion and contraction.

Whiteley also helped to refine the exterior styling. In addition to the detail of the knuckles, his input helped to refine the shapes – particularly curves and softening corners – in the superstructure.

Panamax rig

The requirement to be able to clear the Bridge of the Americas at the Pacific end of the Panama canal called for the schooner rig with three equal masts. All are of carbon and are made by Rondal, with integrated sail handling systems and Carbo-Link carbon standing rigging.

Each mast has in-boom furling, while the aft two have staysails for use when reaching. The tank and wind tunnel testing was used to verify different headsail options, particularly to determine the differences between a large blade jib versus a large staysail or yankee.

“Obviously you have better windward performance with a large blade,” says Wassen, “but as soon as you bear away the yankee is much more forgiving in trimming, so we decided that made more sense.” A further advantage is that when the yankee is part furled the sheeting point remains the same.

Rondal’s Integrated Sailing System consists of the three carbon Panamax masts with furling booms, hydraulic boomvangs, headsail furling systems, deck winches and equipment, captive winches and continuous solid carbon standing rigging by Carbo-Link, all equipped with load sensing capabilities. Photo: Rondal

In addition, a blade jib requires much higher sheet loads to maintain leech tension. Even though Sea Eagle II is a three-masted yacht, the yankee sheet loads are still predicted to reach 18 tonnes – but this still allows standard-size captive winches to be used, rather than larger custom-made units.

The Panamax limitation obviously poses the question as to whether sail area needed to be compromised to fulfil this criteria. However, this is clearly not the case for Sea Eagle II . Hull speed is close to 20 knots and the yacht is clearly capable of surfing at much higher speeds, despite being designed as a pure cruiser. This role, of course, suggests keeping heel angles to a maximum of 10-15°.

Nevertheless, the VPP figures suggest potential boat speeds of 17-18 knots in 16 knots of true breeze with a true wind angle of 70°. “As soon as you can ease the sheets a little bit, we have a lot of sail area,” says Wassen, “so on a beam reach, I wouldn’t be surprised if a steady 20 knots is possible.”

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

The Dali was less than 30 minutes into its planned 27-day journey when the ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.

The ship, which was sailing under the Singaporean flag, was on its way to Sri Lanka and was supposed to arrive there on April 22, according to VesselFinder, a ship tracking website.

The Dali, which is nearly 1,000 feet long, left the Baltimore port around 1 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday. The ship had two pilots onboard, according to a statement by its owners, Grace Ocean Investment. There were 22 crew members on board, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. There were no reports of any injuries, Grace Ocean said.

Before heading off on its voyage, the Dali had returned to the United States from Panama on March 19, harboring in New York. It then arrived on Saturday in Baltimore, where it spent two days in the port.

Maersk, the shipping giant, said in a statement on Tuesday that it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying Maersk cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard, the statement said, adding that the company was monitoring the investigations being carried out by the authorities and by Synergy Group, the company that was operating the vessel.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the Maersk statement said.

The Dali was built in 2015 by the South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries. The following year, the ship was involved in a minor incident when it hit a stone wall at the port of Antwerp . The Dali sustained damage at the time, but no one was injured.

yacht sea look

Get an exclusive look on board this pedigree €37.5m superyacht

Looking at the history of the 60-metre Sea Pearl, it is instantly apparent that she’s a superyacht with a first-class pedigree. To start with, this fully-custom Dutch yacht was built for a particularly knowledgeable and exacting client – none other than the owner of the Netherlands-based shipyard Oceanco himself.

Then there’s her exterior and interior styling. Imagined by renowned studio Winch Design, Sea Pearl , like most classic yachts designed by the renowned UK-based studio, has a trademark look of timeless elegance and sophistication. Her exterior design was intended to attract attention from the get-go, so much so that her commissioning owner ensured she was launched in time to take pride of place at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Now listed for sale with Superyacht Partners , Sea Pearl is an appealing investment for anyone looking for a unique, fully custom, head-turning yacht in excellent condition. Since her launch in 2004, she’s been impeccably maintained and improved upon, with several multimillion euro refits taking place over the past few years. For example, in 2012, Sea Pearl revisited Oceanco for an extensive machinery overhaul and installation of a new entertainment system. Her current owner has spent well in excess of $20 million (£17million) to keep the 1,184 GT Sea Pearl a high-performing yacht in great condition.

Thanks to her twin CAT 3512 B DITA diesel engines, her performance includes a top speed of 16 knots and a range of 6,000nm. Sea Pearl is also privately registered under Lloyd’s Classification, was built to MCA and has been maintained to commercial standards. Some of her key features are her six well-appointed staterooms for up to 12 guests, including a master suite with a forward observation lounge and a full-beam VIP suite. On the upper aft deck, the touch-and-go helipad can also be used for an entertainment area when at anchor or in port. A fully-equipped modern gym, large spa pool and a grand piano in the main saloon are also included in her impressive list of amenities.

Sea Pearl is a rare find in today’s competitive market, and according to her broker, a world-class yacht in every respect. To see for yourself, Superyacht Partners are offering one-on-one buyer tours with the owner’s representative. To arrange a meeting, contact the partner of Superyacht Partners, Matthew Albert, directly via phone (+33 624047686) or email [email protected] .

Baltimore bridge collapse wasn't first major accident for giant container ship Dali

Propulsion failed on the cargo ship that struck the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday as it was leaving port, causing it to collapse into the frigid Patapsco River. Its crew warned Maryland officials of a possible collision because they had lost control.

“The vessel notified MD Department of Transportation (MDOT) that they had lost control of the vessel” and a collision with the bridge “was possible,” according to an unclassified Department of Homeland Security report. “The vessel struck the bridge causing a complete collapse.”

An official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed to USA TODAY that the DHS’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is working with federal, state, and local officials “to understand the potential impacts of this morning’s collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.”

Clay Diamond, executive director, American Pilots’ Association, told USA TODAY power issues are not unusual on cargo ships, which are so large they cannot easily course correct.

“It’s likely that virtually every pilot in the country has experienced a power loss of some kind (but) it generally is momentary,” Diamond said. “This was a complete blackout of all the power on the ship, so that’s unusual. Of course this happened at the worst possible location.”

The ship in Tuesday's crash, Dali, was involved in at least one prior accident when it collided with a shipping pier in Belgium.

That 2016 incident occurred as the Dali was leaving port in Antwerp and struck a loading pier made of stone, causing damage to the ship’s stern, according to VesselFinder.com, a site that tracks ships across the world. An investigation determined a mistake made by the ship’s master and pilot was to blame.

No one was injured in that crash, although the ship required repair and a full inspection before being returned to service. The pier – or berth – was also seriously damaged and had to be closed.

VesselFinder reports that the Dali was chartered by Maersk, the same company chartering it during the Baltimore harbor incident.

The 9-year-old container ship had passed previous inspections during its time at sea, but during one such inspection in June at the Port of San Antonio in Chile, officials discovered a deficiency with its "propulsion and auxiliary machinery (gauges, thermometers, etc)," according to the Tokyo MOU, an intergovernmental maritime authority in the Asia-Pacific region.

The report provided no other information about the deficiency except to note that it was not serious enough to remove the ship from service.

Why did Dali crash into the Baltimore bridge?

Officials said Tuesday they’re investigating the collision, including whether systems on board lost electricity early Tuesday morning, which could be related to mechanical failure, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Accidents at sea, known as marine casualties, are not uncommon, the source told USA TODAY. However, “allisions,” in which a moving object strikes a stationary one with catastrophic results, are far less common. The investigation of the power loss aboard the Dali, a Singapore-flagged vessel, will be a high priority.

In a video posted to social media, lights on the Dali shut off, then turned back on, then shut off again before the ship struck a support pier on the bridge.

Numerous cargo and cruise ships have lost power over the years.

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea requires all international vessels to have two independent sources of electricity, both of which should be able to maintain the ship's seaworthiness on their own, according to a safety study about power failures on ships , citing the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

The Dali's emergency generator was likely responsible for the lights coming back on after the initial blackout, Diamond said.

“There was still some steerage left when they initially lost power,” he said. “We’ve been told the ship never recovered propulsion. The emergency generator is a diesel itself – so if you light off the generator, that’s also going to put off a puff of exhaust.”

Under maritime law, all foreign flagged vessels must be piloted into state ports by a state licensed pilot so the Dali's pilot is licensed by Association of Maryland Pilots .

Diamond described the incident based on information from the Maryland agency that licensed the pilot aboard the ship. His organization represents that group and all other state piloting agencies in the US.

“The pilot was directing navigation of the ship as it happened,” he said. “He asked the captain to get the engines back online. They weren’t able to do that, so the pilot took all the action he could. He tried to steer, to keep the ship in the channel. He also dropped the ship’s anchor to slow the ship and guide the direction.

“Neither one was enough. The ship never did regain its engine power.”

How big is the Dali ship?

The Dali is a 984-foot container vessel built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. With a cruising speed of about 22 knots – roughly 25 mph. It has traveled the world carrying goods from port to port.

The ship, constructed of high-strength steel, has one engine and one propeller, according to MarineTraffic.com.

The Dali arrived in Baltimore on Sunday from the Port of Norfolk in Virginia. Before that, it had been in New York and came through the Panama Canal.

It remains at the scene of the collapse as authorities investigate.

Who owns and operates the Dali?

It is owned by the Singapore-based Grace Ocean Pte Ltd but managed by Synergy Marine Group, also based in Singapore. It was carrying Maersk customers’ cargo, according to a statement from the shipping company.

“We are deeply concerned by this incident and are closely monitoring the situation,” Maersk said in the statement.

Synergy, which describes itself as a leading ship manager with more than 600 vessels under its guidance, issued a statement on its website acknowledging the incident and reporting no injuries among its crew and no pollution in the water. There were two pilots on board and 22 crew members in all, according to Synergy, all of them from India.

USA TODAY reached out to Synergy on Tuesday, but the company did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Sea Chest Envy

yacht sea look

A Sea Chest has to be better, right?

A Sea Chest is a common item on larger vessels. It allows most all raw water intake to be centrally located for cooling engines, generators and air conditioners. Often this allows easier access to the strainers and sea cocks. So, that’s better, right?

Simplicity in Design

The Sea Chest seen in these photos is a simple fiberglass square tube riser. The opening on top includes a circular port. You can reach in to remove any debris. Debris may include jellyfish, plastic bags or flotsam.

Easy to service from inside the boat…But?

The Sea Chest does not reduce the amount of through hull valves or sea cocks. This boat has the same amount of sea cocks or through hull valves as any other boat without a Sea Chest. Above all, you should cycle all sea cocks periodically to ensure they can be closed when needed.

On boats less than 65 feet the sea chest will often take up valuable engine room real estate. In fact, we usually only see this in a handful of pleasure boats. It may be preferable to use the space for other equipment such as batteries or a work station.

Watch this video to see the location of a sea chest in a smaller 44ft trawler’s engine room. It is quite uncommon to have a sea chest in a boat this small. I know….is 44 feet really small? You should spy it about 1 minute and 12 seconds in. And this quick second video shows the exterior below the waterline of the hull. You will see the square plate strainer which is the intake for the sea chest. Don’t forget to check out the additional photos to really get the picture.
