Wisp the Ghost

Wisp the Ghost is a special visiting character you may come across in the evening until really early in the morning. This guide details what you can do with Wisp and whether or not you should choose Wisp 's Something New or Something Expensive.

How to Find Wisp

Wisp can be found floating around the woods sometime after 10pm occasionally. He will stay in your town until the start of the next day, which begins at 5am.

Wisp isn't exactly someone you can chat with, but you can help Wisp! Upon approaching the ghost, you'll inevitably scare Wisp. For whatever reason, Wisp is scared of... ghosts!

Ghost.jpg

Wisp is so frightened that their spirit splits, and in order to regain a full form, they need you to help find the five missing pieces. You'll need a net to catch them.

The spirit pieces will be spread across your island randomly, so be ready to get a few laps in. We've noticed that a few do seem to be in the Resident Services direction.

If you can't find the spirit pieces make sure to turn up your volume and listen for their unique floating noise. The spirit pieces do move, but slowly. Keep running around until you find them!

Wisp Reduced.jpg

Once you've collected all five Wisp spirit pieces, return them to Wisp. You'll be given two options for rewards one Wisp is back to full form: Something New or Something Expensive.

Wisp's Reward - New or Expensive?

But what reward should you choose? Wisp is a ghost and doesn't know much about what's expensive. Once when choosing "Something Expensive," Wisp gave the default wallpaper in found in homes. It seems like either yield entirely random rewards, so we tend to choose "Something New."

Wisp will also give you an item from a particular category of item, like furniture or wallpaper or flooring.

After you choose your reward Wisp will disappear.

Artwork of Wisp

Wisp is a ghost in the Animal Crossing series . He first appeared in Doubutsu no Mori+ and appears in all subsequent games except Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: New Leaf prior to the Welcome amiibo update. He appears at night, usually between 12 AM and 4 AM, and rewards the player with items or services after a specific task is completed.

Characteristics [ edit ]

Appearance [ edit ].

ghost animal crossing

Wisp is a white ghost with beige lips, a pair of white teeth, black eyes, and gray eyebrows.

Clothing [ edit ]

In Doubutsu no Mori+ , Animal Crossing , Doubutsu no Mori e+ , Pocket Camp , New Horizons , and Happy Home Paradise , Wisp wears a hitaikakushi .

In City Folk and Welcome amiibo , Wisp wears a blue genie hat, which has a round-shaped golden brooch with a red gem and a feather with its colors being blue, cyan, green and white.

Personality [ edit ]

In Doubutsu no Mori+ , Animal Crossing , and Doubutsu no Mori e+ , Wisp is kind, polite, and friendly to the player, but also fears his boss. In City Folk and Welcome amiibo , he acts like a helpful and generous genie. In New Horizons , he has a more fearful side, despite being a ghost himself, as shown when the player approaches him to talk to him and then he mistakes them as a ghost and gets scared.

Appearances [ edit ]

In animal crossing [ edit ].

ghost animal crossing

In Animal Crossing and Doubutsu no Mori e+ , Wisp can appear in a random acre between 12 AM and 4 AM. In order for Wisp to appear, the town must have 8 or more weeds . Once this requirement is met, Wisp will appear on a random night in 2 to 4 days. The weed requirement does not have to be maintained between meeting it and Wisp's appearance. When the player first enters the acre where Wisp is, he is not visible, but makes himself known by calling out to the player. With Wisp's name appearing as "??????", he says "Ooo... Can I ask you something...?" If the player gets near Wisp, he tells the player that he must collect five spirits that have wandered into the town by 4 AM, or else he is in big trouble and his superior will punish him horribly. He asks the player to catch them with a net because he has seen how good the player is at catching insects and offers a reward in return. Wisp will return every night for 7 days until his spirits are caught and returned to him. Once his spirits are returned or 7 days pass without doing so, Wisp will appear again in 2 to 4 days as long as the town has 8 or more weeds.

Each Wisp spirit is placed in a different acre and does not move between acres. However, the game internally categorizes the spirits as insects, meaning, due to the fact that having a low town rating drops the chance that a fish and insect spawn in an acre to as low as 50% chance each, it is possible in a town with low rating that a spirit will not spawn when its acre is entered. If this happens, the spirit is relocated to a new random acre and the chance of it spawning is calculated again when that acre is entered. The spirits initially only appear within acres in the B, C, D, or E rows; but can appear in any acre, including ones within the A and F rows, if they are relocated due to the player either leaving an acre without catching one or low town rating. Spirits cannot appear in an acre where another spirit resides or where the player is moving into.

After the player catches and returns the five spirits, Wisp will offer them one of three rewards as thanks:

  • Pull weeds! - Wisp will remove all the weeds in the player's town.
  • Paint my roof! - Wisp will repaint the roof of the player's house to a color of their choosing.
  • Give me stuff! - Wisp will give the player a random item that they have not obtained before, which can be any reorderable furniture , wallpaper , carpet , clothing , umbrella , stationery , or any of the following non-reorderable items: Redd 's unique furniture, raffle furniture, Wendell 's wallpapers, Saharah 's carpets, Gracie 's clothing, or gyroids . If the player has already obtained all of these items, Wisp instead gives one of them at random.

In City Folk [ edit ]

ghost animal crossing

In Animal Crossing: City Folk , on certain nights, the player can find an empty lamp somewhere in the town. After the player finds the lamp and returns it to Wisp, the genie will ask the player to rub the lamp in their attic, where he will offer to grant them one wish. The player does not have to rub the lamp straight away, and can save the wish for later use. As in his original appearance, Wisp will offer three choices:

  • Weed! - Wisp will remove all the weeds in the player's town, excluding clovers and dandelions .
  • Smash Roaches! - Wisp will remove all the cockroaches in the player's house.
  • Give me stuff! - Wisp will give the player the choice of a random furniture, accessory, hat or clothing item. Usually this is an item that is not currently in the catalog (excluding rare items).

In Welcome amiibo [ edit ]

ghost animal crossing

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo , a magic lamp will appear randomly while walking around town. If the player places the lamp in their house, Wisp will appear. Unlike Animal Crossing and Animal Crossing: City Folk , Wisp helps with amiibo . Wisp can only be used once a day. While Wisp did not appear in Animal Crossing: New Leaf at the game's launch, he was added as a major character in the Welcome amiibo update. When the player rubs the lamp, Wisp will appear and the player can use an amiibo card. When the amiibo is scanned, the player can choose for the villager to move to their town or to get something, usually furniture.

If a special character's amiibo is scanned, that character's RV will appear at the campground with special items that can be bought with MEOW Coupons . Wisp will take over running buildings if the usual proprietors are in their RVs; however, he will not be able to fulfill some roles, such as Isabelle 's, preventing the player from using their services for the day. If the Villager amiibo is scanned, Wisp will appear at the campground in an RV.

If the player attempts to sell the magic lamp at Re-Tail , Reese will inform them that the lamp is valuable and will ask if they are sure they want to sell it. If the player sells it anyway, Reese will buy it for 10 Bells and it will reappear outside the next day.

In New Horizons [ edit ]

ghost animal crossing

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons , Wisp returns to a form closer to his original appearance. On certain nights from 8 PM to 5 AM, the player can find Wisp wandering around the island. If talked to, Wisp will mistake the player as a ghost and get scared, which leads to his five Wisp spirit pieces scattering across the island. As of version 1.5.0 of the game, performing the "Haunt" Reaction in Wisp's line of sight will trigger the same event. Similarly to Animal Crossing , the player can find and catch the five spirits using the Net and return them to Wisp. After the spirits are returned, Wisp will offer the player the choice of receiving an item they have not had before or something expensive. If the spirits are not returned, they disappear from the inventory the next day.

Since version 2.0, Wisp can be invited over to Photopia , The Roost , and the archipelago in Happy Home Paradise for a vacation home. The latter is the only way to obtain Wisp's photo .

Chance rates [ edit ]

Category rates [ edit ].

Depending on the player's housing status, Wisp will give the player a random item from each of these four categories. [1]

"Something new" [ edit ]

If the player chooses "something new", Wisp gives the player an item in the following categories within the pricing range. [1]

"Something expensive" [ edit ]

If the player chooses "something expensive", Wisp gives the player an item in the following categories within the pricing range depending on the status of Nook's Cranny . [1]

Prior to 2.0.0 [ edit ]

Until version 2.0, Wisp has a chance of 90% to give a random item from Table 1 and 10% chance to give a random item from Table 2, both within the pricing range. [1]

Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Wisp - How To Catch Spirit Pieces And Wisp's New Or Expensive Reward Explained

The will of the Wisp

  • by Gavin Lane Mon 8th Nov 2021

If you're playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons of an evening, you may well have run into Wisp, a benign and easily-startled spirit wandering around your deserted island in the dark. If you speak to this friendly ghost, Wisp will shed five pieces of his spirit in fright and ask you to retrieve them for him.

In this guide we'll cover how to catch the five pieces of Wisp's spirit as well as what reward you'll get for your troubles.

When does Wisp visit in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Wisp the ghost (or spirit) appears on your island on random nights--sometimes multiple nights in-a-row--but there's no way to predict when he will visit (just like how Gulliver appears on random, and sometimes consecutive, days). Instead, you'll have to look out for his telltale glow as he floats around your island at nighttime. He doesn't appear in just one location, either, so keep an eye out for this friendly ghost.

Wisp first appeared on a higher level of our island on the third night of our island getaway before we had the ladder , so we couldn't access him immediately, although you may not encounter this issue. Fortunately, he returned again the following night.

How to catch Wisp's 5 spirit pieces

After speaking to Wisp and startling him, this body will divide into 5 glowing spirit pieces which shoot off to random locations around your island. Having shed a considerable amount of weight from fright, Wisp will politely ask you to retrieve is spiritual essence and return him to his former glory.

You catch these spirit pieces using your Net in exactly the same way you'd catch a butterfly or other flying bug . Handily, they don't disappear if you miss them, so just keep swinging and you'll soon have them collected in your inventory .

Wisp's five spirit pieces can be found floating around the island in random locations. They move slowly, but they do move, so keep a close eye on your surroundings as you search and make sure you don't miss one floating behind a tree or other feature of your island. Just keep circling your island to find them all.

After you've collected the five spirit pieces, return to Wisp and talk to him. In return for your help he'll offer you a reward which comes with a choice to make...

Wisp's rewards - Should I get 'something new' or 'something expensive' from Wisp?

Upon returning the five spirit pieces to Wisp the ghost (sorry, spirit ) he'll reward you by making an offer of "something you don't have yet" or "something expensive" .

If you choose something expensive, Wisp will confide that he's actually quite bad at judging a gift's worth and you'll soon find out that he's telling the truth there. He's not doing it on purpose, you understand, he's just not quite in tune with the materialist tendencies of the beings occupying our plane of existence. He operates on a higher level to simple consumers like us, you see.

On top of that, he may well gift you something you already own if you go for 'something expensive', so we'd argue that 'something new' is the best option to go for .

It seems Wisp is able to discriminate between dull old things and new shiny things, so we'd prefer to get a shiny new thing for our catalogue rather than be stuck with yet another stripy tee.

And that's it! Happy busting (sorry, catching )!

This article is part of our Animal Crossing: New Horizons walkthrough , which includes a Complete Fish List , Complete Bug List and Complete Sea Creatures List . If you're looking for specific fish or bugs, we can tell you how to catch the elusive Coelacanth , Mahi-Mahi , Giant Trevally , Stringfish , Golden Trout and all the Sharks and Beetles , along with a full list of critters leaving at the end of the month (unless you visit Kapp'n's Boat Tour islands , of course!).

If it's new content you're looking for help with, we can help you find gyroids , unlock Brewster's café , use the new Pro Camera App for selfies , enact new ordinances , get the beloved Froggy Chair , and even learn How to Cook .

About Gavin Lane

Gavin loves a bit of couch co-op, especially when he gets to delegate roles, bark instructions and give much-appreciated performance feedback at the end. He lives in Spain (the plain-y bit where the rain mainly falls) and his love for Banjo-Kazooie borders on the unhealthy.

@LetsGoSwitch not sure on exact time but I've had him twice, about 8-10pm

@Moon Thanks!

One thing I encountered was that if you don't catch them all in the night that you first meet him, then you lose the pieces you've collected. I caught one right after I saw him, but had to get off. Now I can't locate it. I thought maybe I put it in storage, but it's not there...

Animal Crossing Wisp: how to catch Wisp's spirit and reward in New Horizons explained

It's time to do some ghost hunting!

Wisp is an easily frightened ghost who will occasionally haunt your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons . He is also one of the special visitors who will appear on your island.

Talking to this ghost will result in you hunting down and catching the five pieces of Wisp's spirit that escape when Wisp, the ghost, mistakes you, a living human, for a ghost.

It's worth the trouble, however, because Wisp won't forget to reward you.

On this page:

Wisp time and location in New Horizons explained

How to catch wisp's spirit in new horizons explained, reward for helping wisp in new horizons explained.

Like the other special villagers, such as Gulliver , Wisp will randomly appear on your island in New Horizons. You won't know he's visiting, until you run into him during one of your nighttime walks.

ghost animal crossing

Wisp will make his first appearance after your first couple of days on the island. He only ever appears at night and floats around a random location on your island, until you either talk to him or the morning comes.

Cover image for YouTube video

If you decide to talk to Wisp in New Horizons you'll scare him so badly that his spirit will divide into five pieces and scatter across the island. Since it's your fault that he's in this state, it's only right that you fix it.

ghost animal crossing

To do this trek across your island and all five of Wisp's spirit.

Each one will look like a small blue flame and you can catch them in any net, just like you would with a bug.

These pieces of Wisp spirit can travel freely across your island, so just keep walking around, making you double back on yourself occasionally, and you'll eventually find all five.

ghost animal crossing

Don't worry if you need to enter a building, Wisp and his pieces of spirit will still be there when you come out.

Once you've collected all five spirit pieces, it's time to head back to Wisp for your reward.

The Animal Crossing 2.0 update and Happy Home Paradise is here! We can help you with the new additions - including where to find Brewster , Gyroids , new villagers , ordinances , new fences , storage shed , new hairstyles , Froggy Chair , group stretching and Kapp'n boat tours . Cooking is now unlockable, so you need to know how to make both flour and sugar , as well as how to grow carrots, potatoes and tomatoes . Meanwhile, if you're new to Animal Crossing, our New Horizons tips can help with the basics. From the off, there's fish and bugs to catch , flowers and fruit to grow with. One long term goal is building your Happy Home Academy score . Finally, you need tools such as the new ladder and vaulting pole to fully explore.

For helping Wisp become whole again in New Horizons, you'll be offered the choice of two rewards.

These rewards are:

  • Something new
  • Something expensive

ghost animal crossing

While an expensive item might be tempting, we recommend the 'Something new'.

Wisp is upfront about the fact that he isn't very good at judging the value of items, so you might end up with something that's actually quite cheap. There's also a chance that you receive an item you already own.

The reward you receive from 'Something new,' however, might not be expensive, but it will be a completely new addition to your item collection.

You'll also earn Nook Miles if you help Wisp out.

Good luck with your ghost hunting!

Description [ ]

Wisp is a white ghost roughly spherical in shape, about the same size as the player . What he was before he became a ghost is unknown. Because Wisp dislikes the light, he only appears at night. In City Folk and New Leaf , Wisp is connected to a genie lamp. Wisp works for an unspecified location and is said to have a scary boss , who he is afraid of. Wisp often needs the player to collect five spirits that are roaming around the town. In Hohinda Mura Dayori , villagers describe Wisp's spirit orbs as being cold and refreshing, and that could be used instead of an air conditioner. Between New Leaf and New Horizons , Wisp found himself stranded alone on the deserted island .

Ghosty Lamp

Wisp's lamp in a player's pocket

The player can find him randomly between the times of 12:00 AM to 4:00 AM, and between 8:00 PM and 4:00 AM in New Horizons . They must catch spirits with their net or find his lamp for a reward.

As a reward, he gets rid of all weeds in town, paints the player's roof, gives out an item, or in later versions of the game, kills all the roaches in the player's house.

In Animal Crossing [ ]

Wisp GC

Wisp in Animal Crossing

In Animal Crossing , the player will need to capture 5 spirits roaming around the town, and return them to Wisp (who stays in the same acre he is found in). He will only appear if there are 8 or more weeds around town. His reward is one of three things:

  • He will remove all the weeds in the player's town.
  • He will give the player a randomly selected item (furniture, clothing, wallpaper, flooring, or gyroid) that they don't yet have in their catalog.
  • He will re-color the roof of the player's house.

In City Folk [ ]

In City Folk , the player will have to find the empty lamp somewhere in the town. The rewards Wisp gives are essentially the same as in Animal Crossing , only the roof painting was changed to the ability to smash roaches, as the roof paint could be bought from all of Tom Nook's stores (apart from Nook's Cranny), and the random item reward has been updated to give the player a chance to get a random accessory or hat, which they may not already have available in their catalog . However, the item is usually not rare. Also, if the player doesn't have it in their catalog and they select hat then Wisp will give the player a turban instead.

In New Leaf [ ]

Originally, Wisp was completely absent from New Leaf . However, he was included in the Welcome amiibo update.

About a matter of 1-4 days after the update is downloaded, unknown circumstances while the player is wandering around their town can cause Wisp's voice to call for them. If they follow his voice, they will discover his lamp, which he asks them to take to a private place (their house) to be opened. The lamp functions as a piece of furniture and can be placed upon tables. If it's interacted with, Wisp will emerge. However, he is unable to stay outside of his lamp without possessing the body of a villager, so he requests that the player scans an amiibo . If the amiibo is compatible, Wisp will turn into that character.

What happens next depends on the type of amiibo scanned. If amiibo Cards from the Welcome amiibo series or figures based on characters from the Splatoon , Monster Hunter , and The Legend of Zelda series are scanned, Wisp will give two options for a wish: "Come play" or "Give me something". If "Come play" is selected, the character will appear inside of an RV at the campground . If "Give me something" is selected, Wisp will give the player an item.

If a villager amiibo card from the Animal Crossing series is scanned, Wisp will give two options for a wish: "Move in" or "Give me something". If "Move in" is selected, the villager will move into the player's town. If the town is currently full, Wisp will give the option of asking one of the villagers to move out, giving a random suggestion of who could be asked. If "Give me something" is selected, Wisp will give the player an item and 5 MEOW Coupons .

If a special character's amiibo card from the Animal Crossing series is scanned, Wisp will give the player the option to either receive the character's picture or to receive an item.

If an Animal Crossing series amiibo figure is scanned, Wisp will give one option for a wish: "Come and visit". If this option is selected, the character will appear at the campground in an RV . If the player visits this character's workplace while they're camping, they will be replaced with Wisp. However, Wisp cannot do their job and asks that the player return when the right person is back.

If the Super Smash Bros. series Villager amiibo is scanned, Wisp will argue that he is too legendary to be possessed, though if begged, he will offer to try and get the villager in question to come and visit and ask the player to meet him at the campground. Wisp's RV will then appear at the campground. When spoken to, Wisp will apologize for not being able to get the villager but explains that he found various items loosely related to the character, which can be purchased like all other items found at the campground.

Note: Wisp can only accept one request from the player per day (e.g. one item, one invitation to the campground etc.) After that he cannot be summoned until the next day.

In New Horizons [ ]

On certain nights between 8 pm and 4 am, sometimes multiple nights in the same week, the player will encounter Wisp on a random part of the deserted island . Ironically, Wisp is afraid of ghosts and will confuse the player for one when approached, causing him to become startled and his spirit to split into 5 spirit pieces that scatter around the island. In the first encounter, Wisp will explain that he has been alone on the island for a very long time, and the player is the first person he has met there, hence his surprise.

At every meeting, Wisp will ask the player to retrieve his 5 spirit pieces in exchange for a reward. The spirit pieces can be captured with a net, but they are not stationary and will slowly drift about the island. After the player returns to Wisp with all 5 pieces, he will then ask if the player wants an expensive item (worth 10,000 Bells or less) for the reward, or an item they do not currently own (1,500 Bells or less, item not in catalog). Wisp will always announce if the item he is giving is clothing, furniture, flooring, or wallpaper. Choosing an expensive item does not guarantee a valuable reward, and a cheap item or one the player already has maybe given instead; Wisp warns that he has difficulty discerning the value of things. Wisp will occasionally also mention that the item will be chosen from a specific theme, such as flooring or furniture. Once all is done, Wisp says he hopes to cross paths with the player again and disappears. In the 2.0 update for New Horizons, the mystery of where he has gotten to is solved, as he sometimes appears at the Roost.

If the player has already obtained a ladder, Wisp will only spawn on elevated areas.

If the player logs off (saves and quit) the game during Wisp's quest, the game will act as if the player never talked to Wisp at all when the player relogs, requiring the player to start Wisp's quest again. Any spirit pieces will disappear in the player's inventory if the game is closed. Wisp will also mention how he tried to get all 5 spirit pieces back earlier, implying he was vaguely aware that the player reset.

If the player completes Wisp's quest and logs on as another resident, then Wisp will respawn for the other player to initiate Wisp's quest. Should the player initiate party play after completing Wisp's quest, Wisp will also respawn. In this case, Wisp will not lose his spirit if he is talked to by a resident who has completed his quest on the same day but will for residents who have never completed his quest. Only the resident who started the questline can catch Wisp's spirit pieces.

Amiibo-419-Wisp-NA

  • Wisp is one of only four visible NPCs (the others being Jack , Farley , and Lloid ) who isn't an animal or doesn't resemble an animal of any kind.
  • Wisp looks similar to Boos from the Super Mario series. His German name, "Buhu", is even based on "Buh Huh", the German name of the Boos.
  • It could be likely that his Japanese name, "Yutarou", and his appearance alone could be a reference to Q-Tarou the Ghost from the old 1960's anime and manga, "Obake no Q-Tarou".
  • He shares his birthday with Sheldon . Both of their birthdays are on February 26 th .
  • In Animal Crossing , Wisp will mutter something about a master and what he will do if the spirits aren't recovered.
  • In City Folk , Wisp says that he is scared of ghosts, even though as a lamp spirit he resembles one.
  • In New Leaf , the player can get an unlimited amount of Magic Lamps by picking it up when he is encountered, then giving it to another player. He will appear in a different lamp after about 3 days.
  • In New Leaf , a weed-removing function can be accessed through Leif once Timmy and Tommy's store upgrades to T.I.Y., in which the player can pay him Bells so that he will remove all of the town's weeds, essentially making Wisp's weed removing reward useless.
  • In New Leaf , Wisp has the voice of a lazy villager.
  • In New Horizons , he has the voice of a lazy villager.
  • In New Horizons , Wisp mistakes the player for a ghost, startling him.
  • He will sometimes appear at the same time as other special characters, like Celeste, Saharah, CJ, Flick, Redd, etc,.
  • This is likely because in his spiritless form, Wisp looks quite similar to his spirits.

Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Find Wisp the Ghost

ghost animal crossing

Wisp the ghost makes a reappearance in Animal Crossing New Horizons, and you can start finding him very early in the game. You will want to seek out this friendly spirit because if you complete his task, he will reward you.

If you’re not sure how to find Wisp, we’ve got you covered. Here’s how to find Wisp the ghost in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

How to Find Wisp the Ghost in Animal Crossing New Horizons

The most important thing about finding Wisp is that he can only appear on your island at night. This might seem obvious—he is a ghost, after all—but if you are searching during the morning or afternoon, he will not show up.

The other thing to note is that he can appear anywhere on your island, meaning that if you don’t yet have a vaulting pole or ladder, he might be inaccessible at first. He can appear anywhere, but he often hangs out around the shorelines.

Wisp shouldn’t be too hard to spot. Once you see a ghost floating around, approach and talk to him. He will immediately become spooked, and parts of his spirit will break apart and float away.

This will embarrass Wisp, and he will ask you to help him track down all five parts of his spirit and return them to him.

You’ll need a bug net for this. Roam around your island and search for the floating teal-colored spirits. Again, these might appear anywhere, so if you don’t have a vaulting pole or ladder, you might not be able to reach them all.

Use your net to catch all five spirits and return them to Wisp. He will reform into his normal ghost shape.

After helping Wisp, he will reward you, and you get a choice. You can either choose an item you don’t have yet or an expensive item.

It doesn’t matter too much which option you pick because even choosing an expensive item grants you something random. I picked an expensive item and was rewarded with a wet floor sign that sold for only 222 bells. Not the most expensive, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers.

Once Wisp gives you an item, he will thank you and disappear, and he may randomly appear at night again in the future.

That’s all you need to know about how to find Wisp the ghost . For more tips, tricks, and guides, visit our  New Horizons guide wiki .

How to find Wisp, your ghostly neighbor in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

This friendly fellow only comes out in the wee hours.

ghost animal crossing

Since the days of the Nintendo GameCube, Animal Crossing players have been haunted by Wisp, the local ghost who roams your world during the wee hours. They're back in New Horizons , and will appear earlier than ever before. This time around, he's got a sidequest he'll need your help with. Meeting your island's incorporeal resident should therefore among your highest priorities, above building new bridges and exploiting the financial system .

How to find Wisp, Animal Crossing: New Horizons' ghost

In previous Animal Crossing games, Wisp would only show up when your island was covered in weeds. Now, all Wisp needs is the cover of night. It's unclear exactly when the cut-off is for Wisp to appear, but the window seems to be from 8:30 p.m. or slightly earlier through perhaps as late as 4 a.m. It depends entirely on what time your console's clock believes it to be, but the default is to mirror the time in real life. Wisp will show up in forests located near the coast at night. You might need to use your vaulting pole to reach them, but they shouldn't require much else.

Once you and Wisp start conversing, they'll be so overwhelmed with fear the little poltergeist will explode, scattering five pieces of their spirit around the island. Wisp will request that you retrieve their wayward parts, sending you on a quest around the island. If you agree to the quest, they'll reward you with something nice!

How to complete Wisp's sidequest for a reward

After exploding, Wisp's spirit will be just about everywhere. You'll have to check every nook and cranny to locate the wayward souls.

ghost animal crossing

As pictured above, the spirit parts are small, with a similar hue to Wisp's main "body." You can collect them by using your bug net. They're fairly stationary, so once you get close to them, catching the spirit parts shouldn't be too tedious.

Unfortunately, the spirit part locations are random. That means they may appear on areas of your island that are inaccessible with your current toolset. If that happens, all you need to do is leave the area and wait. The parts will eventually float elsewhere – hopefully, somewhere you can reach. Note that while the quest will stay open indefinitely you can only collect the spirit parts at night.

Something new, or something expensive?

After collecting all five pieces, deliver them to Wisp to get a reward. They should still be located in the coastal area where you first met. Wisp will offer you two choices for your reward: something new or something expensive. I suggest you pick something you don't already own, as it's unknown what the 'expensive' item is relative to. If you're in New Horizon's endgame, a 2000 bell item will have a different value to you than somebody just starting out. Why even concern yourself with money when you can earn thousands of bells in just a few short minutes .

Animal Crossing New Horizons is now available for Nintendo Switch.

How to Help Wisp the Ghost in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Wisp the Ghost is one of the most elusive characters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and goes completely to pieces if a player finds him.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons , the latest title in Nintendo's long-running village-sim, is packed with colorful characters. As players build up their New Horizons ' island communities, they'll help a variety of creatures ranging from Blathers the Owl curator, to the Dodo Airlines brothers.

One of the game's most unusual characters is also one of its most elusive, only appearing to those players who like to wander about at night. Wisp the Ghost is a nervous phantom who can pop up randomly on a player's island after the first couple of days. Like many of New Horizon 's side characters, Wisp needs something from the player, and here's how to help him.

Ghost Hunting

Like Gulliver the albatross , Wisp will only appear occasionally on the island, floating around a random location after dark. He also won't give any sign that he's arrived, and players hoping to meet him will have to regularly search at night.

If a player interacts with him while he's doing his haunting, Wisp will be so startled he'll split into five different pieces. These fragments of Wisp's spirit will be scattered across the island , and will need to be gathered back together. Though it only seems fair for the player to do this, as they were the one who spooked him in the first place. Plus, there will be a reward for helping to restore Wisp.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Wisp Spirit

Finding the Five Pieces

The five fragments of Wisp's spirit look like little blue flames, and will bob as they move around the island. Unfortunately, the fragments don't seem to be interested in helping players find them, and will wander randomly. This means that players may need to double-back and cover some areas twice before they can find them all.

Once a player has found a fragment of Wisp's spirit, they can catch it using their bug net. To do this, hold A and approach the fragment, then release to swing. The five pieces won't disappear if players go into a building, but they will if they're not all found before the sun rises. Providing a player has managed to catch the five pieces in time, they can use them to reform Wisp, who will offer them a  new or expensive reward for putting him back together.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons  is available now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Ghost: Everything You Need to Know About Wisp

By jack o'dwyer | mar 24, 2020.

Genie of the "Empty" Lamp, Wisp

Animal Crossing: New Horzions' ghost, Wisp, has a special task for players who manage to find him.

Your island has a resident ghost aboard! Wisp, the specter you remember from previous games, has decided to follow you to your brand new deserted island paradise. Every tropical location needs a bit of mystery, right? The best part is: now you don't have to wait for your town to grow into a total state of disrepair and ruin.

Greetings, everyone! Did you enjoy your first weekend on your previously deserted islands? If you ever need advice, please stop by Resident Services. I'll also continue to send out updates from here! Yes, yes! — Tom Nook (@animalcrossing) March 23, 2020

Wisp is a ghost who resemble's Nintendo's ghastly playable character Boo from the Super Mario franchise. In previous games, he's worn various hats from a paper party hat to a turban with a feather. New Horizons has him back to his paper circlet with a single triangle pointing straight up in the middle. It's almost like a crown.

In New Horizons, players can encounter Wisp on their island past 10 pm. His appearance isn't guaranteed so it may take a few nights before you find him. Once found, you'll find there's nothing frightening about this ghost. In fact, you're the scary one, and you'll end up accidentally scaring him to literal pieces. Wisp will "explode" and then task the player with recovering his missing spirit pieces.

Once the pieces are recovered from all over the island, players can choose between "something new" and "something expensive" for their reward.

Wisp has taken on several iterations in previous games. The original title will only let him appear if the player has been negligent with their weeding. His quest remains the same and he can weed the player's town, change their roof, or gift them an item in return for their help. He didn't appear in Wild World, but in City Folk and onward he became a "lamp spirit." Players could find him by finding a genie's lamp item. In New Leaf, once the "Welcome Amiibo" update is downloaded, he gains the ability to turn into a scanned Amiibo.

Wisp is a Pisces. His birthday is Feb. 26. He is one of only four villagers who do no resemble an animal.

Animal crossing new horizons: locating wisp's spirit pieces.

This guide will help players find Wisp the ghost, and help him locate his five spirit pieces in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons introduces a plethora of new characters to the world of Animal Crossing. And while the majority of the new cast is pretty lively, one, in particular, is fairly ghostly. Nevertheless, helping this little ghoul will net the player some sweet rewards.

Wisp is a small orbicular ghost who inhabits your island. He only comes out late at night and roams the outskirts of the island's shore. And ironically enough he is terrified of ghosts, and he needs your help to get his spirit pieces back.

Wisp in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons Wisp spirit

Wisp can be found on the outskirts of the island shore late at night roaming a small area. If a player approaches Wisp and talks to him, Wisp will think you are a ghost and will explode into spirit pieces out of fear. This explosion will leave behind a much smaller version of wisp.

Once Wisp realizes you are not a ghost he will ask for your help getting his spirit pieces back, and it is the least you can do since you cause him to lose them in the first place. Wisp will tell you that you need to find 5 spirit pieces scattered around the island, and you will need a net to catch them. He also promises you a reward in return for collecting his spirit pieces.

Spirit Piece locations in Animal Crossing New Horizons

The Spirit Pieces you are looking for can be found floating all across the player's island. They are not in one set place and act similar to butterflies floating from place to place. Players will need to track down five of these pieces and then return to Wisp to collect their reward.

Again, players will need to collect each piece with a bug net, and the pieces will need to be collected at night.

Wisps Reward in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons Wisp reward

Upon returning the Spirit Pieces to Wisp he will assume his original circular form from before he was scared... to death. He will then thank the player and reward them with an item of their choosing.

The player will not know what they are picking specifically but will be given two obscure choices: An item the player doesn't already own or an expensive item. After making your choice, a reward will be placed in your inventory and Wisp will disappear. According to the Nook Miles challenges it appears that this will not be the last time you see Wisp.

Wisp scaring a villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Sure, Animal Crossing: New Horizons ’ resident ghost, Wisp, can be pretty annoying. Because no, I don’t have time each time I say hi to him to collect five spirit pieces and put him back together. I’ve been pushing you around for 10 minutes to get you in the perfect photo spot, Wisp! You’re telling me you didn’t notice?

(This is not to ignore that he always gives trash rewards, too!)

Either way, it is Halloween season . It’s Wisp’s time to shine. I’m embracing Wisp in October, collecting his spirit pieces but mostly leaving him alone as to not scare him. It seems like other people are doing that, too. Wisp’s presence is especially welcome this month, and having him around definitely is a vibe.

Soooo I basically pushed wisp all the way to my new pumpkin patch to get this photo from AnimalCrossing

What this comes down to, I think, is something Polygon’s Patricia Hernandez wrote about last month: capturing Animal Crossing: New Horizons ’ “irresistible vibes.” A perfectly crafted screenshot, after pushing Wisp around for minutes, topped with a seasonal filter, is like a postcard, she wrote.

Wisp fits neatly into the aesthetic everyone’s going for in October: autumn and fall stylings with a hint of Halloween creepiness. New Horizons players started prepping for the season well before the October update, anyway, crafting the perfect seasonal experience. Having Wisp stop by? That’s just the icing on top of the cake.

And so, this October, we appreciate Wisp. Just for this month, I am going to forgive you for handing me a trash can when I chose an expensive reward.

Wisp Animal Crossing New Horizons Time – When Does He Show Up

Trying to net yourself something expensive or new? You're going to catch a particular spirit when he starts drifting around your island. Here's what we know about the Wisp Animal Crossing New Horizons time.

ghost animal crossing

Trying to work out when you’ll have to deal with a spooky visitor in Animal Crossing: New Horizons ? Well, don’t you fret. There’s some element of randomness to it, but there is a mandated Wisp Animal Crossing New Horizons time and here’s what we know about it.

ghost animal crossing

If you’re not already familiar with some of the visitors that will come to your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, we actually have a master guide of everyone that’s going to show up at any given time. If you’re someone who’s not sure about what to do when he shows up, well, we’ve got some tips on that but more importantly you’re going to want to make sure that you’re there at the time that Wisp shows up.

Our sources say that Wisp can be found floating around your deserted island any time from 10 PM onwards. Essentially, he’ll hang around until 5 AM, which is when the day essentially resets and the dark turns to dawn, heralding some sunlight hours which means that it’s time for ghosts to get lost. If you want to know when you can see Wisp, it’s going to have to be after 10 PM, and it’ll be random as to whether or not he shows up. There’s no guarantee that he’s going to come every night, so you’re going to want to keep your eyes peeled and to be wandering around at exactly the right time.

Once you actually run into Wisp, you’re going to scare the living crap out of him. A little bit literally. He’s going to shoot out spirits when he’s startled by you, and much like Gulliver’s bad luck with transponder parts, you’re going to have to find 5 spirit pieces belonging to Wisp so that he can put himself back together and get out of here. These are essentially going to be spread out around the island, and you have to catch them with your net as they float around. They don’t move the quickest, so this should be easy. Once you’ve returned the pieces to Wisp, he’ll give you the option of him bringing you back something new or something expensive as thanks. Personally, we’d go with new since it’ll be something that you haven’t encountered before, and ghosts don’t really know the value of, uh, anything.

Now that you have our guide to the mandated Wisp Animal Crossing New Horizons time that you can encounter this ghost, it should be easier for you to hunt him down and get his cool reward items after. If you’re wanting another way to add to the livability score of your island for K.K. Slider’s visit that goes beyond interior and exterior decorations, why not also check out our guide to breeding flowers below? We think that it’s a pretty easy way to get the ball rolling when it comes to decorating the landmass and making it much more appealing.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Players Find A Hidden Ghost

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Players Find A Hidden Ghost

Written by

Joseph Kime

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has offered fans a lot of treats along its life cycle, with various events and updates providing fresh content for the cult favourite on the Switch. The spookier side of the game is particularly good fun, bringing Jack the Halloween Czar out of hiding - asking for candy to get you in the scary spirit.

But, it seems that the spooks aren't limited just to events and stumbling across Wisp every once in a while - because as it turns out, there's a terrifying spirit hiding in the game.

What Is The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Ghost?

The Graveyard Wallpaper has a ghost that gets closer and closer in dim lighting?? from AnimalCrossing

One Animal Crossing fan has come across an incredibly creepy detail hidden in a home wallpaper that nobody has identified yet, that sees a sinister poltergeist creeping closer and closer to the player.

The Graveyard Wallpaper is creepy at the best of times, but as it turns out, it hides a ghost that gets closer and closer to the room it's plastered in depending on the room's lighting.

The video showing off the wallpaper was shared to the Animal Crossing subreddit, and sees the player flip through lighting options, as the ghost that once stood far away moves closer and to a different position with every flip of the switch. Eep.

Players React To New Horizons' Secret Ghost

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Players Find A Hidden Ghost

Fans are reasonably pretty freaked out by the poltergeist, especially as it had been under their noses the whole time. "The fact this ghost is photorealistic in a game like Animal Crossing makes the thing even creepier", says one commenter.

"MatPat has entered the chat" says another, and frankly, we're waiting with bated breath for this ghost's Game Theory episode.

The ghost is an eerie element of the game we didn't see coming, and could well be a part of Animal Crossing 's lore that we'd missed. We'll be cowering in the museum if you need us.

So, You've Helped Wisp on 'Animal Crossing' — Now What?

Amber Garrett - Author

May 5 2020, Updated 2:16 p.m. ET

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is so full of endearing visitors even the ghosts are cute! If you've played at night enough times, chances are good you've encountered Wisp, a ghost that gets scared a lot easier than he scares others, and no matter how many times you encounter each other, he will always freak out every time you approach him. While that's bad news for him, it means you get to help him out in exchange for a gift. But how do you decide which gift to accept from him?

Here's a guide to dealing with Wisp on 'Animal Crossing.'

If it's your first time seeing Wisp, don't be scared. He may look like a ghost but, like the family in The Others , he thinks you're the ghost, and when you approach him, he will be so frightened his spirit will leave his body and split into five parts. The spirit pieces he'll ask you to collect will spread out all over your island.

Careful of other nighttime creepers, though!

The pieces look like small little flickering flames, but apparently they're quite cold. While they do move around a bit, they don't travel very fast, so it's not an endless game of chase to track them down. To collect the spirit pieces, use your bug net and snatch them out of the air. When you have found all five, track down Wisp again and talk to him once more to return the pieces to him. The grateful ghost will offer you a reward for your time.

"Something new or something expensive" — which Wisp gift do you choose?

Wisp gives you two options for the type of reward you will receive. He will usually indicate what kind of gift it will be; sometimes it will be furniture, sometimes clothing or decor for your home. No matter what category the item he offers, Wisp will ask whether you want something new or something expensive.

So which do you choose? Well, we will warn you that choosing something expensive doesn't mean you'll end up with a fancy violin or some other, equally high-dollar catalog item. As Wisp will tell you (after the fact, sadly), he doesn't have a good grasp on the value of objects and therefore you actually could end up with something cheap and on top of that, it could be something you already have, which is a real double bummer.

If you ask for something new, no matter what you receive, it's almost certain to be an item you don't yet have cataloged, meaning you have never purchased or received it during gameplay.

How often does Wisp come to my island on 'Animal Crossing'?

Wisp tends to wander onto your island once a week or so, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to bump into him and scare the buhjeezus out of him, so long as you are playing between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. If you have an early bedtime, you might need to put on a pot of coffee or time travel by manipulating the date and time on your console to a few hours in the future.

How The Next Animal Crossing Can Take Gyroids To New Heights

  • The next Animal Crossing game can build on the success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons by making Gyroids an exclusive collectible, enhancing their functionality and giving players more reason to collect them.
  • Animal Crossing games have always encouraged player connectivity, and the next entry could use Gyroids as a tradable item, incentivizing players to visit each other's islands to obtain different variants.
  • By expanding the mechanics surrounding Gyroids, such as obtaining them through various methods and rewarding players for collecting different types, the next Animal Crossing game can capitalize on the popularity of these fan-favorite items.

The next Animal Crossing game will have big shoes to fill after the massive success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons . However, the foundation for a new Animal Crossing game to go above and beyond its predecessor is already in place thanks to the new mechanics introduced in Animal Crossing: New Horizons . While this title launched missing several features, such as The Roost and the Dream Suite, one late addition to Animal Crossing: New Horizons could be a major selling point for the next entry in the series to capitalize on at launch.

Gyroids are a staple of the Animal Crossing franchise, with these odd little noise-makers being around since the original GameCube title. While they didn't come to Animal Crossing: New Horizons until the November 2021 update , the game updated their functionality to allow players to turn on as many of them in their house at once as they wanted, upping the limit from four in the previous entry. To further improve the functionality of these strange items and give players more of a reason to collect them, the next Animal Crossing game could overhaul Gyroids to make them an exclusive collectible.

The Next Animal Crossing Should Aim For a Return to Form With a Key Location

The next animal crossing game could make gyroids a new sought-after collectible.

A big part of the Animal Crossing series is how the games encourage player-to-player connectivity and interaction. The ability to travel to another player's town has been a feature of the series since the GameCube entry allowed players to visit the town of another player if a second memory card with its save data was inserted into the console. Throughout the series, players have been incentivized to visit the towns of others in order to obtain exclusive items like fruits, or even potentially convince a villager to move into their own town.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons incentivizes players to collect Gyroids by allowing them to have as many turned on in their house as they want, and provides them with the means to easily obtain new ones using the new Gyroid Fragment item, which can be buried and watered to become a Gyroid the next day. Previously, the main motivation for collecting these items had been to hear the different sounds they play when placed in the player's house. However, the next Animal Crossing game could put a new spin on this mechanic and create a new way for players to interact with one another using Gyroids as a tradable item.

How an Animal Crossing: New Horizons Successor Could Implement Tradable, Exclusive Gyroids

While it might seem odd for items with such dark lore behind them like Gyroids to become a fun tradable item, the Animal Crossing series already has the foundation laid for this mechanic for it to be a no-brainer inclusion in the next entry. Perhaps Gyroids would function similarly to fruits with only a handful of types initially available on a player's island, requiring them to visit other players' islands in order to obtain all of the different variants. This mechanic could even incorporate Gyroid Fragments as the main method by which players obtain foreign Gyroids, keeping the player in suspense until they bury and water the item to see which variant they get.

Like obtaining foreign fruit in Animal Crossing , there could be other ways of obtaining different Gyroid variants, like finding Gyroid Fragments in presents dropped by balloons or having them randomly sent in letters from the player's mom. To further incentivize their collection, players could receive rewards based on how many different types of Gyroids they've collected. There's clearly a lot of room to expand the mechanics surrounding Gyroids in the Animal Crossing series , and the next entry would be smart to capitalize on these fan-favorite items.
