The Fleming 55 is a well-proven raised pilothouse motoryacht designed for serious cruising. Her semi-displacement hull gives her great flexibility in performance. The Fleming 55 has a range of 2,000 nautical miles at 8 knots yet, with her standard Twin Cummins QSC 500 hp common rail engines, she can attain a top speed of approximately 18 knots. Maximum sustained cruising speed is around 17 knots where her moderate deadrise provides a very comfortable ride. On longer passages, Fleming owners typically cruise at a very economical speed of 10 knots, where the typical fuel burn is slightly more than 10 gph.

The Fleming's deep keel provides protection for the running gear and stability in following seas. Because noise and vibration contribute to fatigue, Fleming has paid special attention to producing a yacht which has become the standard in the industry for its whisper quiet, ultra smooth ride. Fundamental to this achievement is the use of Aquadrive anti-vibration drive systems.

The Fleming 55 was first introduced in 1986, and since that time it has benefited from a rigorous program of evolution. There have been literally hundreds of improvements made, both big and small. While its legendary hull design remains essentially the same, today's Fleming 55 is a thoroughly modern yacht utilizing advanced technology, materials and construction methods. In 2019 construction of hull number 250 is well underway, making it one of the most successful production yachts in history.

Overview Continued...

Foredeck and Forepeak

Special attention has been paid to the ability to set and retrieve heavy ground tackle on the Fleming 55. The fiberglass anchor platform is equipped with twin Maxwell RC12 vertical windlasses with capstans for both rope and 3/8" (10mm) Grade-60 stainless steel chain. The windlass has a plug-in remote control as well as controls in the pilothouse and on the flybridge. Double sets of grooved rollers make it possible to self-launch and stow two 77 lb (35 Kg) Ultra anchors. Hose bibs for salt and fresh water are located next to the anchor platform, and there are deck lockers to port and stbd.

A lock-down hatch on the foredeck provides convenient access to the forepeak, which is separated from the rest of the yacht by a collision bulkhead. It has an area for storage of chain and a separate ventilated rope locker. Each features a bitter end fitting. The forepeak drains directly overboard and can be hosed down without concerns that water will contaminate the bilges.

The flared bow turns aside green water and provides a forward deck of unusually generous proportions. The oval stainless steel handrail has been brought inboard of the sloping bulwarks for convenience and security. To prevent streaking of the hull, the deck scuppers are piped down to the boot stripe, rather than being allowed to drain directly overboard.

Further protection against heavy weather is provided by the design of the Portuguese bridge. There is comfortable seating on its forward side, which is also the location for the forward shorepower inlet. There is ample storage for fenders and lines inside ventilated lockers accessed from the aft side of the Portuguese Bridge, and double doors close off the forward deck areas from the side and bridge decks creating a safe area for small children. There are sturdy, stainless steel handrails around the forward face of the pilothouse and down both side decks.

Easy stairs with handrails designed for both adults and children lead down to the wide and well-protected side-decks, which run down both sides of the boat. Here you will find cleats and chocks for forward and aft spring lines. The inward-opening bulwark doors make for easy and safe boarding.

Aft Deck and Swim Platform

With an area of approximately 250 sq ft. the Fleming 55 aft deck is unusually large. Being all at one level, it becomes an extension of the salon and provides ample space for chairs, donning scuba gear, or fishing. The fiberglass skirt around the edge of the wide teak cap rail conceals mood lighting and hides the engine-room air intakes which are well-protected from salt-laden spray.

Shower fittings for hot and cold water, located next to the inward-opening transom door, are conveniently placed for use while standing on the swim platform. Stainless steel handrails on the transom and a swim ladder, which can be deployed by a person in the water, provide safety and convenience.

Access to the upper boat deck is via a stainless steel ladder and a sliding hatch in the overhead. Access into the lazarette is through lockable hatches, with safe and stylish curved corners. Available as options are a console for cockpit engine controls and a locker, which can be equipped with a basin and faucet, insulated chest or icemaker.

Flying Bridge

The Fleming 55 low-profile flying bridge is spacious and packed with practical amenities. Its double helmseat, with folding stainless steel footrest, folds forward to access storage beneath it. The control console has full engine instrumentation and ample room for electronics. Access to and from the pilothouse is by a protected internal companionway directly from the pilothouse, avoiding the need to navigate perilous steps or ladders where a slip could result in a fall over the side. A wrap-around venturi windshield with stainless steel handrail provides protection from wind and weather.

There is seating for eight guests close to, but out of the way of, the helm station. A fiberglass table is standard and an ingenious pass-thru "dumbwaiter" eliminates the need to carry refreshments up from the galley. Aft of the seating area is the separate boat deck for the tender and a fully hydraulic davit, with remote control. From here, a ladder provides direct access to the lower aft deck.

A popular option is the aft facing boat deck control station that provides the captain with excellent visibility aft. Complete with bow thruster, and engine controls, backing into a tight slip is easier than ever.

The radar arch provides ample room for the full range of antennae required by modern electronic equipment, and an optional fibreglass hardtop is a popular choice.

Main Salon and Galley

The salon in the Fleming 55 features a comfortable L-settee with cushions upholstered over wood frames instead of the usual foam cushions on plywood. The sole is hand-laid teak and holly strips, and all built-in furniture is of superior quality joinerwork with rounded corners. There is a hi-lo table of unique design making it suitable for dining and as a coffee table. To starboard is a cabinet with powered TV lift and space for entertainment system components. To port is a bar with icemaker. The salon opens directly onto the aft deck through double sliding doors.

The galley is conveniently located on the same level as the salon and is properly designed to be used while underway. Either Corian or granite counter tops can be ordered. There are ample storage lockers and drawers, and appliances include a 21 cu. ft. side-by-side fridge/freezer with teak-panel doors and chilled water & ice dispenser; Miele induction cooktop with practical custom stainless steel pot-holders; convection microwave; and an undermount double stainless steel sink with waste disposer. Space has been provided for an optional dishwasher. A 20-gallon water heater is conveniently located close to the sinks for instant hot water. A pass-through dumbwaiter makes it safe and easy to serve food and drinks to guests on the flying bridge.

Fleming's signature low-profile design is evident even in the interior, as just a few steps lead up to pilothouse and down to the accommodations.

Accommodations

The perfect close to a day of cruising is to retire to a comfortable cabin. The Fleming 55 offers easy access to all the accommodations via a central passageway. A separate washer and drier are conveniently located behind a sliding door in this passage.

The master cabin is forward for maximum light and ventilation. It features a tapered queen berth with headboard. The bed lifts at the press of a button to access storage for bulky items. The bed also slides aft to make it easier to make the bed. There are two hanging lockers with shelves, teak louvered doors and space for a TV.

The master cabin has an en suite head with Corian, marble or granite countertops and a molded fiberglass shower stall. Hans-Grohe faucets are used throughout and feature a thermostatically controlled shower.

The port guest cabin is offered with either two single or one double bed with headboards. An additional slide-out upper berth with either layout is optional. The aft bulkhead has generous bookshelves. The starboard guest cabin has one lower and one upper, slide-out, upper berth. This cabin can also be offered as an optional office with desk, lockers, bookshelves and space for a computer & printer.

The guest head features a one-piece fiberglass molding and shower stall with bi-fold stainless steel doors. The attractive ceramic basin is set in a Corian, marble or granite countertop. Faucets are Hans-Grohe with a thermostatically controlled shower.

Throughout the yacht all lighting is LED type with polished stainless steel fittings. Teak and holly soles are standard in all interior areas.

Engine Room

The Fleming 55 engine room is meticulously well thought out and provides easy accessibility to every piece of equipment.

A signature feature of the Fleming 55 is its quietness and freedom from vibration. Much of the credit for this lies with the Aquadrive system, which isolates the engine and transmission from the propeller thrust, permitting the use of much softer engine mounts. Aquadrive is fitted as standard on every Fleming 55 and their rotating couplings are concealed beneath fiberglass covers for safety.

Another reason for the quietness of the Fleming is the careful attention paid to sound insulation. Lead/foam insulation is used extensively throughout and all hatches are dogged down on rubber gaskets. There are even double hatches separated by an air space over each engine.

Fuel tanks are made of fiberglass with integrally molded sumps to allow maximum useage of fuel. Vinylester resin is used in their construction on the interior and fire-retardant resin in the outer layers. The fuel system has been designed to make the transfer of fuel foolproof. It is impossible to inadvertently overfill one tank by incorrectly switching a fuel return valve.

Access to the engine room is via two hatches in the salon sole and from the lazarette through a uniquely shaped oval door designed for easy access. Engine room intake air enters from the lazarette to ensure it is free of salt before reaching the engines and generators.

For safety and convenience each Cummins QSC 500HP engine has a start and a stop button located in the engine room, and a PTO (power take-off) on the gearbox provides hydraulic power for the stabilizers which are standard equipment on all Flemings.

Inside the large lazarette are four polyethylene water tanks totaling 300 gallons (1,135 liters), battery master switches, and a 3,500 watt inverter. Four air conditioning compressors provide heating and cooling for the entire yacht. Against the transom is the steering system with its connection point for the autopilot. The tops for the rudder stocks terminate above the waterline. Despite all this equipment there remains 95 cu. ft. of storage for fenders and other cruising gear. Access to the engine room is through the oval-shaped door.

In many modern designs it has become fashionable to eliminate the inside steering station, but the Fleming 55 features a pilothouse which closely resembles the bridge of a much larger vessel. We created a dedicated place from which the boat is piloted and controlled without any distractions from other on-board activities but which is still only three steps from the salon and galley. Four interior steps safely lead to the upper flying bridge station.

Specially designed removable consoles provide ample room for a full range of modern electronic equipment without intruding on the engine instrumentation. Overhead consoles provide additional space. There is also a proper chart area with drawers and a chart light. Electrical panels swing out to provide easy access to wiring connections and the inside of the flying bridge console is accessed through a swing-out bookcase. The watch-keeper has their own Stidd helm seat and an adjacent, raised L-shaped settee and table provide a comfortable social area with excellent visibility through the side and forward windows.

This is truly the nerve center of the boat where all the systems and crew come together in complete harmony.

CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS

All Fleming Yachts are built to comply with the appropriate marine and environmental regulations for the area in which the yacht is delivered

USA - NMMA Certified Manufacturer fully complying with: ABYC, USCG and EPA regulations.

European - Built to CE-RCD Category "A" Ocean Standard using the relevant ISO standards.

    Australia - Australian Standard 1799.1-2009

    Canada - Transport Canada TP1332E 04/2010

MANAGEMENT & ENVIRONMENT

Fleming Yachts Construction (HK) Ltd management and environmental systems have met and been approved by ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standards.

The question most manufacturers ask themselves when considering a new feature is whether it is necessary to include it in order to sell the boat. In the case of the Fleming, we ask only whether its inclusion will make the boat safer, better or more convenient. That is why we have introduced literally hundreds of refinements since we started construction in 1985 and why we continue the process today.

For that reason, Fleming Yachts reserves the right to make changes to specifications and equipment without notice.

Valhalla V-55

Valhalla V-55 running quickly offshore

The V-55 from Valhalla literally stretches the definition of an outboard-powered center-console fishing boat, merging the genre with what genuinely qualifies as a yacht. That’s not surprising given that Valhalla’s sister brand is Viking Yachts. Quad V-12 600 hp Mercury outboards provide the get-up- and-go for the Michael Peters-patented Stepped-V Ventilated Tunnel running surface. And oh, does it go, achieving a top speed of 62.8 mph, even while rigged with a tuna tower, a second control station and a molded fiberglass hardtop. An electrically operated fuel-management system enables each engine to draw from a designated fuel tank. The V-55 is also available with five 600-hp Mercury Verados for a top speed of 70-plus mph.

A large standard equipment list complements an exhaustive option sheet to build this 55-foot-7-inch fishing machine with total customization. Stepping aboard through the port or starboard dive doors, the 15 1/2-foot beam creates an immense cockpit ideal for offshore fishing. Dual 65-gallon pressurized livewells with glass fronts are built into the transom and flanked with fold-down seats. Overboard discharge drains in the transom corners accommodate additional on-deck livewells. Twin insulated 110-gallon fishwells with refrigeration were set up in the cockpit on my test boat, with an Eskimo ice-dump receptacle to starboard. Gunwale rod holders line the coaming, and 12-volt electric reel outlets are a popular option.

Valhalla V-55 bow seating

For service, a large lazarette hatch provides access to a seven-position manifold and twin Hooker sea chests, one for the air-conditioning system and one for the livewells. A second Hooker livewell pump in place serves as an instant standby. Raw-water intake and circulating lines are protected with an ElectroSea ClearLine system. The gelcoated lazarette is easy to maintain and delivers safe and swift access to fuel filters, water separators, two Rule 2000 bilge pumps with Ultimate float switches, and a Reverso auto outboard flush system. Wiring and plumbing are neat, secure and well-labeled.

Forward of the lazarette hatch is a second watertight hatch and home for the Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer. This hatch also supports a Release Marine eight-rod rocket launcher. Aft-facing mezzanine seating features molded armrests, tackle stowage, eight more rod holders and seven drink holders. Beneath the mezzanine cushions are more compartments that can be ordered as chill boxes. Forward of the mezzanine in the second-row seat module are stowage compartments. Aboard the test boat, these included an electric grill, a sink and a flat-screen TV. Below the mezzanine, reached from the second row, is still more stowage, and a place to carry a helium tank or two for kite-fishing.

Amidships are side lockers for stowing four outfits per side and the dive-door ladder. Anglers will enjoy the 24-inch-wide walkways, 41 inches of freeboard, a recessed bow rail and a 186-gallon fish box. Built into the center lounge is a 40-gallon livewell. Both the port and starboard forward lounges, each with stowage below, end before reaching the bow, so there are no cushions to step on. The 10-inch-tall teak step provides good footing while still retaining 30 inches of freeboard.

Valhalla V-55 tackle station

To make sure everyone is comfortable, the first row of seating at the air-conditioned helm features four 19-inch Release Marine teak helm chairs with armrests, electric slides and flip-up bolsters. But the comfort does not stop there; you can order a second row of seating in either a four- or five-chair arrangement. With the latter, you can seat a party of nine. A second version of the V-55 trades the second-row seating for a U-shaped lounge with a power-actuated teak table that converts to a two-person berth.

A ProCurve glass windshield with a custom one-piece wraparound fiberglass frame provides undistorted visibility. The raised black dash accommodates three 22-inch Garmin 8622 multifunction displays. A Mercury MFD monitors the engines directly in front of the wheel. Single-lever Mercury controls are to starboard, along with the Mercury joystick and a SidePower electric bow-thruster joystick. Two banks of Bocatech 12-volt switches operate accessories.

Valhalla V-55 cabin

A sliding door that disappears into a pocket starboard of the helm leads below to reveal posh overnight accommodations that include a private stateroom with a walk-around queen bed, a 24-inch flat-screen TV, a Bomar overhead hatch, side windows, an enclosed head, and a separate fiberglass shower stall. A full-featured galley, a dinette that converts to a single bunk, a 32-inch flat-screen TV, and a pair of bunks aft make excellent use of the space.

The aft machinery room contains a Fischer Panda 15 kW generator, a Kuuma water heater, batteries and a pair of ProNautic charging systems, a Parker Pro Mini watermaker, and a Spot Zero water purifier.

From design to construction to performance to accommodations and fishability, Viking broke new ground with its Valhalla V-55. Coupled with outfitting from Palm Beach Towers and Atlantic Marine Electronics, the V-55 sets a new standard for supersize center-console fishing machines.

Viking 55 Convertible

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • Updated: February 23, 2013

55 foot fishing yacht

The proud bow of Viking’s 55 Convertible pierced the outer edge of Atlantic City, New Jersey’s Absecon Inlet and entered into a near-flat-calm ocean. She was pointed east and I got the sense that this sport-fisherman wanted to bolt straightway for the distant canyons in search of novel-worthy pelagics that could easily span her 17-foot-9-inch beam. I know it’s what I wanted her to do. After all, this vessel is named Business (hull No. 1) and creating big-game boats is what this builder is all about.

This sport-fisherman is constructed to handle the rigors of such offshore duty. Her vacuum-infused, Baltek-core hull — except for where there are through-hull penetrations, which are solid fiberglass — sports a planing form that follows that of her predecessors, the Viking 60 and 70. (Vacuum infusion is also used on numerous other parts of this yacht for weight savings. All totaled, the 55 comes in at a 77,700-pound, full-load displacement, which is lighter than most in her class.)

Unlike earlier Vikings, this hull form features amplified convex sections forward and aft that help with head-sea performance and enhance stability in a seaway, roll movement on the drift or trolling and lift when throttling up. In addition, two small strakes add to her effortless planing ability.

A raised sheer line above the waterline complements my test boat’s enhanced shape beneath it. The result is increased forward freeboard, which should keep most spray at bay and ensure that the flying bridge’s optional Costa Clear enclosure is relatively salt-free when Poseidon gets an attitude (as he is known to do).

_ Click here to see a full photo gallery of the Viking 55 Convertible._

Where this boat truly shines is when she’s pushing herself to the ragged edge of performance. During my wheel time, I took the twin ZF single-lever controls and flattened them to the pins. The optional 1,550-horsepower MAN 12-cylinder diesels quickly spooled up in sweet synchronicity at 2,330 rpm, which is well within the 2,300 rpm rating, as the 55 shot in the direction of those calling canyons. (MAN 1,400 hp diesels are standard, and 1,800 hp MANs and 1,625 hp Caterpillar C32s are also options.) I checked the center 17-inch screen of this boat’s three-display electronics setup, featuring the optional Furuno NavNet 3D system, and noted the speed on the GPS: 42 knots!

This velocity created an awesome blow-what-hair-I-have-left breeze that any helmsman would welcome as a wake-up greeting or for cooling off after a long day of trolling for those pugnacious pointy-nose fish that big-game anglers love to chase. That speed will cost, however, about 160 gph.

Dialing back her engines to 1,900 rpm set this test boat at a comfortable 33.5-knot cruise while the MANs burned 100 gph. At this pace, this 55 has a range of 488 nautical miles or 0.34 nmpg based on her 1,619-gallon fuel capacity and a 10 percent reserve. (My test vessel featured an optional 205-gallon tank, which is positioned under the companionway stairs leading belowdecks.) At 1,700 rpm those MANs go through 76 gph, reduce the boat’s speed to a quite-respectable 29 knots and extend that range to 556 nautical miles. In addition, this setting keeps the engine load in the low- to mid-60 percent realm, helping ensure that your vessel’s power plants have a long and healthy run.

Although this model doesn’t feature the fly-by-wire Viking independent programmable electro-hydraulic rudder (VIPER) steering system of her larger siblings, she’s no less agile with her power-assisted tie-bar setup, which has offset tiller arms to enable fast response and quick cuts. I put the wheel hard over while she made 36 knots and this 55-footer carved a near-perfect, three-boat-length circle into the sea while feeling sure-footed throughout the maneuver. This yacht’s pedigree was also evident in her ability to effortlessly spin on her axis and back down with a vengeance. Tournament anglers will really appreciate her agility.

They will also appreciate this yacht’s 151 square feet of fish-fighting cockpit space as well as the two massive in-sole fish boxes under the optional teak-covered cockpit that are both capable of holding several bigeyes. Of course, these boxes can also be set up as a dump for the ice maker (as on this vessel) and livewells, or any combination of the three. There’s also an in-transom kill box. Like that cockpit sole, the 55 sports optional all-teak covering boards.

Finishing off the business side of this boat is a pair of Rupp outriggers, a contoured and artisanal-grade Release Marine offset fighting chair set up for battling granders and a mezzanine with built-in bait stowage under the seat.

The same attention to detail given to the 55’s construction and fishability can be found in this sport-fisherman’s interior spaces. This test vessel sported grain-matched, high-gloss teak veneer throughout her interior. Attractive teak strips set up against the salon’s cream-tone headliner subtly, but effectively, play off the overhead LED lighting, adding a sense of warmth to this space.

The 55’s starboard-side island galley layout with an Amtico rosewood-tone sole sported two stools at the overhanging countertop, offering a great place for breakfast. Four under-counter, drawer-style Sub-Zeros (two refrigerators, two freezers) offer plenty of room for stores for the traveling angler and his team for a week or more. If you prefer, you can lose the island and extend the galley counter outboard to starboard, which gains you two more drawers under it. (This 55 got extra freezer space by placing a unit on the flying bridge in lieu of the standard sink.)

A four-burner electric cooktop makes meal preparation for the crew a breeze, but when the bite is hot and time is limited, the Sharp Carousel microwave makes reheating that oh-so-tasty Hot Pocket a no-brainer. (You know you eat them.)

Deep pullout cabinet drawers offer sizable stowage space for dry goods, paper products and snacks. Worthy of note is the light feel of the galley’s cabinet doors, which are cored with Nomex honeycomb in yet another weight-saving measure. All latches and catches here are robust, and even when running the 55 at wide-open throttle up and over boat wakes, not one door or drawer popped open.

Form and function really meld well on this sport-fisherman, and this is illustrated in the belowdecks layout, which features a starboard-side master stateroom with en suite head. Eye-catching arched doors define the hanging locker here while a dresser sits just forward of the queen-size berth. Additional stowage is found in myriad drawers along the outboard side of the room and in two end tables that flank the berth.

Guests and/or crew can take refuge after a long day of battling big fish in either the portside guest space with side-by-side berths or the forepeak VIP, which on this 55 featured crossover berths — a great arrangement for the hard-core angler and his team. For the straight-up cruiser or cruiser-gentleman angler, you can also get a step-up island queen berth here.

In 1996 Viking Yachts launched its first 55-footer. It was the post-luxury-tax world, and over a five-year period this builder constructed and sold about 150 of them. A lot has been learned over the course of building so many boats, and it shows in the new 55. This wealth of experience, combined with innovations in today’s hull design, build methods and technologies, makes it easy to predict that the Viking 55 will be a winner all over again.

55 foot fishing yacht

Since its debut, the second-generation 58 Convertible has received a plethora of five-star reviews from journalists, Viking dealers and captains who’ve raved about her bone-dry ride, nimble handling, large cockpit, free-flowing spacious interior and a host of other attributes. And as the first owners began to take delivery, word was spreading throughout sportfishing ports around the globe that the Viking Yacht Company has delivered yet another bluewater champion destined for greatness.

“We’re successful with every model we release, but there are times when you hit one right out of the ball park,” says Viking President and CEO Pat Healey.

The Viking Yacht Company sold more than 110 of its first-generation 58 Convertible from 1991 to 2000, helping build the New Gretna, New Jersey, company into a sportfishing powerhouse. “It was our largest boat at the time and a major milestone for us,” says Pat. Eighteen years later, Viking’s “Gen II” 58 C is once again leaving the competition in its wake and staking its claim as not only a tournament champion but the best high-performance family cruising yacht in its class.

Fishermen and cruisers alike are always hungry for new designs, new ideas and innovation—and Viking has been ringing the dinner bell since 1964. “We are not taking old concepts and knocking the cobwebs off of them,” says Pat. “Our Gen II 58 and all of our boats are new designs.”

An Evolution of the 55

Our new 58 C builds on the success of the Gen I 58, but its pedigree also includes two generations of the 55 Convertible. The latest 55 has dominated the mid-50-foot range since 2012, while the iconic first-generation of the 55 Convertible stands out as one the most important boats in Viking’s storied history.

“Our design, engineering, boatbuilding and tournament experiences over the past 18 years evolved into the 58 that we have today,” says Pat.

The 58 C is longer than our most recent 55 Convertible, but maintains the same 17’ 9” beam. “We believe we have optimized the length-to-beam ratio, giving the 58 C an enhanced ride and additional interior volume,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “This boat can run faster in the same sea conditions because the bottom is softer, more refined and efficient.”

The underbody hull form allows the 58 C, despite its greater size, to achieve the same top speed as the 55 C, and with more efficient 10-cylinder engines.

The performance of the new 58 C has been its most lauded attribute so far. The boat has exhibited an incredible ability to keep spray down, running clean with its molded strakes guiding the water to break just aft of the house windshield. These performance attributes are due, in part, to the aggressive positioning of the strakes as well as their downturned angle and radiused shape.

“It’s more than just the strakes, though,” says Dave. “Other critical factors include the speed and balance of the boat; its center of gravity; trim and shaft angle; and engine installation. All of these elements were scrutinized from the previous models and adjusted over the years. This is what we do—build a better boat every day.”

All areas benefit from the 58 C’s larger size, particularly the cockpit and the salon. The 58 C’s cockpit is 14 square feet larger than the 55 C’s while still providing a full-featured mezzanine with a shaded seating area and beautifully upholstered cushions; freezer, cooler, bait and tackle storage; and engine access.

The main difference in the interior layout of these two boats is that the galley-and-dinette arrangement has been reversed. The 58’s galley is on the port side, while the dinette takes the starboard position. The result: a more streamlined layout with a convenient companionway that extends in a straight line from the starboard-side salon door all the way to the forepeak. Below, the master stateroom is now on the port side with an athwartships bed that allows for increased walkaround and hanging locker space.

Operator Friendly

Ideal for the owner/operator or the owner who wants to utilize a part-time crew, the 58 C benefits from Viking’s industry-leading engineering and technological advancements without sacrificing ease of operation, maintenance and access to operational systems. Our design, engineering and manufacturing teams scrutinized every material and method used to build the boat and each and every system to come away with a lean, efficient and operator-friendly sportfishing yacht. “We were determined to keep weight down,” says David. “When it comes to speed and performance, every pound counts.”

Efficiency can be seen in every area throughout the boat, including the mechanical systems in the engineroom and lazarette. While two generators are offered, the standard 21.5 kW unit delivers more than enough power for everyday uses. That same engineering flexibility exists for gyro stabilization. Although we offer both the Seakeeper SK 16 and Seakeeper SK 9, the latter provides a very high level of stability.

Control of the electrical systems is easily managed, with conveniently located distribution panels in the salon and galley equipped with simple-to-use and clearly labeled conventional switches. Below the water, a series of dedicated pumps for the air conditioning, live wells, washdown and other seawater-fed components have been designed, engineered and installed for durability and longevity.

Cockpit & Mezzanine

At 165 square feet, the 58 Convertible’s cockpit is the largest in its class—a full 12 square feet bigger than its closest competitor. All of the cockpit’s lids open and close via stainless steel gas pistons. Their undersides are rimmed with thick gasketing, and deep gutters around the hatch openings ensure quick drainage. The centerline lazarette houses the Seakeeper and provides access to the steering and drain pumps in the Snow White Awlgripped bilge. The starboard-side full-length fishbox is insulated and removable, while the port side contains two in-deck storage boxes. The forward unit can be rigged as a live well.

The cockpit sole is built with a laminated mounting plate for fighting chair, rocket launcher or table installations. Standard cockpit equipment includes flush-mounted rod holders; a side locker for gaffs; a walk-through transom door with lift gate; rounded coamings and toekick space for comfort and balance; and fresh and seawater wash downs.

A comfortable place to take in the action without interfering with the anglers, the observation mezzanine has Sunbrella covered cushions with an armrest that holds a pair of drink holders. The port-side seating has an underneath freezer with cooler space on the step below. The centerline seating provides access to the engineroom; there’s also a refrigerated drink box undermounted in the step leading to the salon. On the starboard side, you have a tackle cabinet with a push-release door and drawers, as well as an insulated storage box in the step below.

A one-piece anodized aluminum ladder leads to the flybridge. Powder-coated aluminum handrails are conveniently located above the ladder and at the helm. The flybridge’s extended overhang, closed in by an anodized aluminum aft railing, gives you extra room behind the helm and companion seats.

The flybridge features a new design for the center console walk-around helm, with a more radiused shape that gives it a sleek look but also maximizes space. A stainless steel steering wheel and single-lever controls are mounted on a raised teak helm pod. Dual recessed radio boxes with standard hinged split lids flank the wheel. Recessed electronics are installed in the upper console, easily viewable and protected from the elements by acrylic fitted lids with gaskets and stainless steel gas pistons.

Atlantic Marine Electronics and Palm Beach Towers, both Viking subsidiaries, provide custom electronics and tower installations. An optional powered drop-down hardtop box can hold even more electronics.

Guests have their choice of port and starboard lounges, a two-person forward console seat and an aft-facing jump seat on the starboard side. A freezer and a refrigerated drink box are conveniently located in the port and starboard forward corners. A Costa Clear enclosure provides weather protection and gin-clear views.

Salon, Galley & Dinette

Step inside the salon and you immediately notice the spaciousness of the layout. Air conditioning registers are concealed behind the valances to reduce noise and drafts, while enhancing air flow.

High-gloss teak or walnut are offered for the 58 C’s interior. A satin finish is an option. Privacy and comfort are the hallmarks of every Viking yacht interior, and the salon of the 58 Convertible brings these elements to the next level by providing three unique living and entertaining areas. After a day of patrolling the canyons for billfish and tuna, the port-side L-shaped lounge (with underneath storage), which faces the starboard-side HD TV that rises from the starboard-side cabinetry, is a wonderful place to relax and plan tomorrow’s adventures. A hi-lo mappa burl cocktail table is standard and adds versatility to the space.

Sub-Zero under-counter refrigeration makes it easy to make sandwiches or grab snacks while keeping an eye on the action in the cockpit through the salon’s aft window. The galley counters and raised bar are topped with engineered stone that artfully complements the teak or walnut cabinetry and the Amtico flooring. The stainless-steel sink, microwave/convection oven and four-burner electric cooktop are nested for convenience and practicality. Storage is abundant throughout, and when it’s time to sit down for meals or to relax, the bar stools and starboard-side dinette accommodate a crowd with ease.

Accommodations

The three-stateroom, two-head layout offers maximum flexibility for cruising as well as campaigning on the tournament trail. Air conditioning with reverse cycle heat and temperature control; wall-to-wall carpeting, overhead LED lights; decorative under-bed rope lighting; Handcraft innerspring mattresses with quilted designer bed spreads; and recessed stereo speakers are some of the comforts and conveniences found in all three staterooms.

As you would expect from Viking, the master suite is especially spacious and elegant with an athwartship queen walk-around bed and upholstered headboard that faces an HD TV mounted on the inboard bulkhead. Storage includes a credenza, drawers under the bed, end tables, and his and her maple-lined hanging lockers.

The forward guest stateroom comes with either a single walkaround queen or crossover berths. An overhead Bomar foredeck hatch comes with the Ocean Air screen shade system. Rounding out the amenities are a spacious maple-lined hanging locker, reading lights, rope lighting behind the valances, and storage drawers and cabinets.

In the starboard stateroom, you have side-by-side bunks, a maple-lined hanging locker with drawer storage underneath. An optional HD TV can be installed in both guest suites.

The master and guest heads feature Amtico flooring, electric heads, engineered stone countertops and satin nickel hardware. There’s storage in the lower vanity, and the upper vanity includes a mirrored medicine cabinet with doors. The beautifully finished enclosed showers also have satin nickel fixtures and are equipped with a drain that leads to an automatic sump pump in the bilge.

Construction

Our building materials and methods maximize strength in an efficient build that reduces weight wherever possible. Our shipwrights use a modified epoxy resin in the hull skin. The hull is built with resin-infused end-grain balsa core, sandwiched with fiberglass and hybrid carbon-fiberglass fabrics. The integral fiberglass fuel and holding tanks are also resin infused with balsa coring on all

sides for stiffness. The main and intermediate engineroom bulkheads

and the forward bulkheads are built in the same resin-infused process but with composite coring material.

Propulsion & Engineroom

A pair of MAN V12 1400CRM (1400 MHP) engines serve as the standard propulsion package. MAN V12 1550CRM (1550 MHP) and MAN V12 1900CRM (1900 MHP) engines as well as the new MTU 10V2000 M96L (1622 MHP) engines are optional. With the MTUs, the Viking 58 Convertible hits 42 knots at the top end and cruises at 36 knots, depending upon load, sea, hull bottom, propeller conditions and ambient temperatures. Range exceeds 400 nautical miles at cruise speed.

The 58 C maintains Viking’s reputation for engineroom excellence with top-shelf machinery and industry-leading design and engineering. Systems include Delta-T ventilation and water suppression; automatically or manually operated fire suppression tied into the main engine and generator ignitions; integrated engine mounting for efficient transfer of energy to the drive train; and oil changing. Of course, all of these systems are mounted with superb precision and attention to detail in an immaculate engineroom painted with Snow White Awlgrip for visibility and ease of maintenance.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Art Panfil of Richfield believes in the magic attraction of Lake Erie and its fishing, and has made it his mission with his Cast it Forward program to give boys and girls, military veterans and senior citizens the opportunity to enjoy a memorable day on the water.

A long-time licensed fishing guide with a 23-foot Hewescraft Pro V, Panfil accommodates new anglers by trailering his boat to the best near-shore fishing areas. To assure a great experience on the water, Panfil invites just a handful of would-be anglers for a few hours on Lake Erie.

His trolling tactics have been very successful in connecting new anglers and young children with a walleye, or two, and has helped disabled veterans and the elderly find fishing success.

“A Lake Erie fishing adventure can be an impactful experience for young and old,” Panfil said. “I like to focus on those who may seldom or never have had the chance to go fishing to enjoyed the rewards of venturing out on Lake Erie. It is a friendly outing that goes beyond catching fish.”

Panfil has generated funding from major fishing companies and individuals to subsidize Cast It Forward. For more information on an invitation to go fishing, or to provide support for the program, visit castitforward.com or call 440-221-8013.

The 40-foot depths are still holding decent schools of walleye, and they’re hungry fish getting read for the spring spawning season that’s just around the corner. Snow and rain are in the forecast for Friday night.

Bass, steelhead, suckers a triple treat: There a good numbers of steelhead trout in the Northeast Ohio tributaries of Lake Erie, and providing extra action in the lower rivers have been the arrival of smallmouth bass and white suckers. That’s one sure sign spring is arriving. Another has been increasing numbers of crappie in the harbor areas, especially around boat docks.

The National Walleye Tour is heading to Western Lake Erie with weigh-ins in Port Clinton on April 18-19. The 43rd annual Walleye Festival gets underway at Waterworks Park in Port Clinton on May 23-27.

While you might first notice the glossy super yachts or a fishing trawler on the Miami River, there’s also an 80-foot vessel packed not with partiers, but scientists, trying to protect the coral offshore.

Bridget Coughlin, the CEO of the Chicago-based Shedd Aquarium, said their research vessel named the Coral Reef II is docked in Miami because of the diversity of marine life in the area.

“We teach climate change through empathy with animals,” said Coughlin. “If you talk about how otters are starving, that empathy for that otter is going to catalyze you to act.”

The vessel can go out to sea for three weeks at a time and can travel as far south as the Dominican Republic. The researchers study a plethora of animals including queen conch, endangered rock iguanas, sharks and climate change’s impact on the coral reef. From March through October, the crew often works days that stretch from 7 a.m. to midnight.

How to come aboard the research vessel

The Coral Reef II also acts as a live-in laboratory for aspiring marine biologists. High school and college students can go on a weeks-long journey that includes snorkeling in crystal-clear water with Caribbean reef sharks and working side-by-side with scientists. Chuck Knapp, a 30-year employee of Shedd and the head of conservation on the vessel, said he got his start that way.

“I was originally a high school marine biology student back on the boat as a 17-year-old in the late ‘80s so it’s been a thrill of a lifetime to come back,” Knapp, who gave a tour of the vessel in the video said.

This summer, high schoolers will be taking a trip to the Bahamas to learn about how to protect dolphins, snorkel shipwrecks and observe firsthand from Shedd’s shark research biologist.

Conducting research on coral reefs bleaching

One of the most unique parts of the vessel is its live well system, which consists of large built-in tanks at the front of the boat filled with seawater.

These mini aquariums are a safe harbor for wildlife that scientists are trying to study or move. The live well system makes it easy to scoop marine life like coral up, perform heat stress tests and return them back to sea in hours.

Ross Cunning, a coral biologist with Shedd, said researchers can use technology onboard to test how well the coral absorbs sunlight and observe what temperature and speed cause corals to bleach.

Even two corals of the same species might bleach at different speeds, and they’re looking for the most heat tolerant coral, Cunning said.

Last summer he worked alongside South Florida research groups, like the University of Miami, the Coral Restoration Foundation, and Reef Renewal to test snippets of these baby corals in nurseries that have been growing in higher water temperatures.

“Finding interventions to boost the heat tolerance in coral reefs is more important than ever,” Cunning said. “But the most critical thing we need to do is stop climate change.

“All the research in the world will not boost coral heat tolerance enough to cope with oceans that continue warming. We must stop the root of the problem and stop greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible.”
