WITH an estimated fortune of more than $13 billion, Mexican mining tycoon Alberto Bailleres is one of the world’s richest people.

His beloved Mayan Queen IV is worth about $200 million and is one of the largest — and most admired — superyachts in the world.

Australians caught a glimpse of the six-storey, 93m floating palace in 2011 when Mr Bailleres sailed her into Sydney, docking at Balmain against the spectacular backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Yet despite the vessel’s fame and regular international tours, only a privileged few — including Australian model and crew member Sinead McNamara, who died on board last Friday in bizarre circumstances — have ever laid eyes on the inside.

“Not much is known about (Mayan Queen IV’s) interior and there are no interior photos available,” states the website superyachtfan.com .

“We do know the VIP suite has an ‘invisible balcony’ … a platform slides out from under the superstructure when needed, preserving the yacht’s sleek lines.”

Like his prized boat, 84-year-old, married father-of-seven Mr Bailleres prefers to keep the details of his private life under wraps and is rarely photographed in public.

Ms McNamara’s family members say the popular Instagram influencer had been working on the Mayan Queen IV for about four months.

Mr Bailleres is believed to have spent the past few weeks holidaying with relatives on the boat but disembarked last Tuesday to fly home to Mexico City, leaving the crew to their own devices, according to local media.

Less than three days later, Ms McNamara was dead in what investigators suspect was a suicide but speculation has been rife on social media that she may have been involved in an accident or even foul play.

Officials at the Port of Argostoli have said that a crew member found the young woman unconscious and hanging from rope at the back of the vessel at around 2am on Friday.

Kefalonian Mantata reported crew members and the boat’s doctor “tried for a long time to bring her back” before she was taken ashore in a comatose state and driven by ambulance to a hospital in Argostoli.

Doctors then decided to airlift her to a private hospital in Athens but she died during the helicopter flight.

The tragedy came as Ms McNamara’s mother Kylie and sister Lauren were en route to join her in Greece for a holiday. They were reportedly told the news while in transit.

The young model had been looking forward to their visit, posting an upbeat message on social media just days before her death.

“Happy birthday to the most amazing big sister I could ever ask for, 5 days till I get to see you!!! Excitement is an understatement”, she wrote.

That post was in stark contrast to an earlier, cryptic message that appeared on Ms McNamara’s Instagram page.

“My head is all over the shop today,” she wrote, along with emojis of a volcano, a tornado and a needle with blood dripping from it.

Sharing an image of herself on a quad bike, she added: “Take me back to this where my only worry was not cracking my skull open.”

Mr Bailleres has so far stayed silent on the tragedy and remains holed up in his family mansion in Mexico City, according to Mexico News Daily .

The octogenarian is the country’s second richest person, with an estimated net worth of US$9.6 billion ($A13.4 billion).

In addition to the $200m ($A140 million) Mayan Queen, Mr Bailleres also owns a Gulfstream G650 private jet, which he purportedly bought for more $US65 million ($A90 million.

The businessman inherited control of Grupo BAL, a conglomerate of Mexican companies involved in mining, trade, finance, agriculture and health, following the death of his politician father in 1967.

Most of his wealth is generated by Mexico’s second largest mining company, Industrias Penoles, which produces 25,000kg of gold and 2.5 million kg of silver annually.

Mr Bailleres also owns El Palacio de Hierro, a chain of boutique stores where those in the money can pick up a hand-stitched designer bags for $US2400 ($A3300) or a US$25,000 ($A34,700) jewel-studded watch.

A 20-year-old Instagram model from Australia has been found dead on a Mexican billionaire’s superyacht.

Sinead McNamara was found in a critical condition on the boat on Thursday as it was docked on the Greek island of Kefalonia.

She died while being airlifted to a hospital in Athens.

Ms McNamara was working as a crew member on the ship Mayan Queen IV , which is owned by Alberto Bailleres, 87, a mining tycoon.

Local media reports said Mr Bailleres and his family had left the yacht days before the death and only crew remained on board.

Ms McNamara had more than 12,000 followers on her Instagram account, where she posted pictures from her travels.

The cause of her death remains unclear.

A senior police officer told The Sunday Times : “By the looks of it, she took her life. We expect the autopsy to verify this in the coming days.”

However, her cousin told the Australian Daily Telegraph her family did not know the cause of death, but believed she may have died in a boating accident.

Ms McNamara’s family were reportedly on their way to Greece to visit her when they heard the news of her death.

Authorities are investigating the mysterious death of an Australian Instagram model after the 20-year-old’s body was discovered Friday aboard a super yacht owned by a Mexican billionaire on a Greek Island.

Sinead McNamara, 20, was found unconscious around 2 a.m. Friday on the back of the Mayan Queen IV in the Greek port of Argostoli in Kefalonia, news.com.au reported. The doctor on the yacht and port authority officials attempted to revive her as a helicopter arrived at the scene to transport her to a hospital.

She died while heading to the hospital, local reports stated. Her cause of death has not been revealed.

“The Coast Guard of Kefalonia has ordered an investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of the 20-year-old Australian national as well as an autopsy-necropsy,” local media In Kefalonia reported.

McNamara, who was described as an Instagram model with more than 15,000 followers, had been working on the $140 million yacht for the last four months. The 300-foot yacht is owned by Mexican mining magnate Alberto Bailleres, who is worth an estimated $6.9 billion.

Bailleres was reportedly not in Greece when McNamara died. He had left the yacht on Tuesday and McNamara stayed on the vessel with the crew. It’s unclear what occurred in the next few days leading up to her death.

Authorities have ordered the yacht to remain at the port as the investigation continues.

The model was working on yachts while she traveled through Europe. Her mother, Kylie, was heading to Greece when she was told her daughter died, The Australian reported. McNamara was supposed to travel to the Greek town of Pylos before her death.

“I have unfortunately received the worst news of my life, (Sinead) has passed away,” her brother Jake McNamara told the news outlet.

McNamara was also expected to meet up with her sister Lauren. She wrote about her excitement to see her sister days ago in a birthday post.

“Happy birthday to the most amazing big sister I could ever ask for, 5 days till I get to see you!!! Excitement is an understatement,” McNamara wrote on Instagram.

McNamara friends and followers have flooded the model's social media pages with their condolences, saying they were shocked by her sudden death.

Instagram model's cryptic last post before mysterious death while working on billionaire's superyacht in Greece

Mystery over what happened to an Instagram model who died while working on a billionaire's superyacht deepened after a chilling message came to light.

Australian Sinead McNamara, 20, had been aboard the £108million boat as a member of crew for four months.

Police said the 20-year-old was found hanging on the rear deck of the Mayan Queen IV - owned by Mexican mining magnate Alberto Baillères - in Argostoli on the Greek island of Kefalonia.

Authorities told The Sunday Times initial evidence pointed to the possibility of suicide but an investigation into her mysterious death has been launched.

Local media reports Miss McNamara was discovered in a critical condition and died on the way to a hospital in Athens on Friday.

"My head is all over the shop today," Miss McNamara wrote on Instagram on August 19.

"Take me back to this where my only worry was not cracking my skull open," she added, along with emojis of a volcano, a tornado and a needle with blood dripping from it."

The Instagram star, who was originally from Port Macquarie and lived in Sydney, arrived in Greece in mid-June this year after travelling to Bali, Alaska and the Whitsundays.

Her brother, Jake, confirmed his sister's death on Saturday.

"I have unfortunately received the worst news of my life, [Sinead] has passed away," he posted to social media.

According to local media, billionaire Mr Bailleres left the yacht, which was anchored off the island of Kefalonia, on Tuesday - leaving Miss McNamara alone with the crew.

What happened in the 48 hours after his departure in the lead up to Miss McNamara's death is now the subject of an inquiry by local authorities.

The Mayan Queen was scheduled to set sail today but has been ordered to remain docked in the port of Argostoli until detectives have interviewed all crew members and a forensic examination of the vessel.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said it has offered support to the McNamara family.

"DFAT is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Greece," a spokeswoman said.

Family and friends revealed Miss McNamara, who has more than 14,000 Instagram followers, was "jet skiing around the most beautiful turquoise water in the Med" just days before her death.

According to published reports, Aussie stunner Sinead McNamara, 20, hanged herself shortly after describing to her mother, Kylie, about an incident with a crew member on the Mayan Queen IV.

Mystery of Instagram model's suicide on billionaire's yacht Back to video

The $190 million mega-yacht had been cruising the Greek islands.

McNamara rose to fame selling her lush lifestyle on Instagram.

Family lawyer Charalambous Triantafyllopoulos said the young beauty had been thrilled with her work as a steward on the six-story yacht owned by Mexican billionaire Alberto Baillères.

Now, the family is demanding answers about what happened to the bubbly blond.

“The family expects the Greek authorities to respond to the causes and circumstances of her death and incidents that occurred just prior,” Triantafyllopoulos said.

“The deceased had telephoned her mother and brother shortly before the unfortunate incident under investigation. She was crying and referred to an incident that took place on the yacht with another crew member.”

So far, Greek cops believe her death was a suicide and crew members blamed her death on a bad break up.

Meanwhile, a Russian Instagram model has been jailed 18 months after she offered cops a threesome to turn a blind eye to her road rage attack on a brother officer.

Kira Mayer pleaded guilty to the attack after a road rage incident following a routine stop in which police stopped her Mercedes in Moscow.

The 24-year-old Russian reportedly grabbed the officer’s report then scratched and kicked them.

Ms McNamara, from Port Macquarie in New South Wales, had been working her final shift on the 93-metre superyacht on Thursday night before she was spotted tangled in ropes at the back of the boat by a passing fisherman.

Her fellow crew members and an on-board doctor did their best to revive her before she was rushed to hospital, but she slipped into a coma and passed away while being airlifted to Athens hospital.

She was just hours from being reunited with her mother and sister, who were in the air on their way to Athens when they received the tragic news.

Although early evidence suggests her death is not suspicious, authorities are still keen to completely rule out foul play and are due to provide an update on their investigation on Monday afternoon.

One senior officer told the Sunday Times : "By the looks of it, she took her life. We expect the autopsy to verify this in the coming days."

Just days before, the Instagram influencer who has more than 22,000 followers said she had been "jet skiing around the most beautiful turquoise water in the med".

alberto bailleres yacht death

And her death has given tragic meaning to an earlier post about quad biking, where she said: "My head is all over the shop today. Take me back to this where my only worry was not cracking my skull open".

Jake McNamara, the social media star's brother, confirmed the terrible news of her death on Saturday.

"I have unfortunately received the worst news of my life, (Sinead) has passed away," he said.

Australian YouTuber Alex Hayes also posted the news to his social media accounts, saying: "Life is so precious gone was too soon. Such a beautiful human being. Will cherish all our memories. Rest in Peace you beautiful soul."

The boat was owned by Mr Bailleres, 87, who owns Mexico's second-largest mining company, but he was reportedly not on board at the time of McNamara's death.

The Mayan Queen IV had been detained by investigators but finally left the port on Sunday night with all 23 crew members on board.

Mexican billionaire arts patron Alberto Bailleres dies, aged 90

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican billionaire Alberto Bailleres, a mining and retail tycoon known as a patron of higher education and the arts, has died, aged 90.

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard on Thursday tweeted that he mourned the death of a "distinguished Mexican businessman".

A long-time fixture on Forbes magazine's rich list with fellow Mexicans such as Carlos Slim and German Larrea, Bailleres made his fortune across a range of industries, and was a key sponsor of one of the country's most prestigious universities.

The founder of Mexico mining company Industrias Penoles, a world leader in silver production, Bailleres had an estimated net worth of $8.6 billion in 2022, according to Forbes.

Bailleres was for decades chairman of the board of trustees of the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (ITAM), a university founded in 1946 by a group of bankers, industrialists and businessmen led by his father, Raul Bailleres.

Many technocrats and officials who helped craft Mexican economic policy for decades were schooled at ITAM.

"His academic legacy at ITAM is invaluable," said Jose Antonio Meade, a former Mexican finance minister and ITAM graduate. "He transformed each and every sector and life he touched."

Bailleres headed the boards of several large Mexican companies, many of which he founded, and also held senior board positions at other major Mexican firms.

His myriad companies extended through sectors from insurance to retail and are grouped under the umbrella of Grupo BAL, headquartered in a distinctive triangular building in one of Mexico City's most wealthy neighborhoods.

BAL includes Fresnillo, another leading Mexican mining company, Grupo Palacio de Hierro, which operates a chain of upmarket department stores, and insurance company Grupo Nacional Provincial.

Although Bailleres avoided the limelight, he was sometimes photographed at high-society events or hosting parties at his Palacio de Hierro stores. He was the owner of a 92 meter (300 foot) super-yacht called the Mayan Queen.

Bailleres was born in 1931. As a teenager, he attended military school in the United States, where he was instilled with "a sense of order and discipline," according to a biography on the ITAM website.

Bailleres had a precocious talent for business. While studying economics at university, he joined Mexican state-owned bank Banco de Comercio in 1951, and became a branch manager while still an undergraduate.

Afterwards Bailleres held several positions at top Mexican brewer Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma, now a subsidiary of Heineken International, and Palacio de Hierro.

He was married to Teresa Gual, with whom he had seven children.

A popular Instagram model died after being found unconscious and twisted in rope on a billionaire’s yacht in Greece, according to reports.

Australian stunner Sinead McNamara, 20, had been working on the six-story Mayan Queen IV, a yacht owned by Mexican mining magnate Alberto Baillères anchored off the Greek island of Kefalonia, at the time of her death on Friday, The Australian newspaper reported.

The cause of death hasn’t been determined yet. Local media outlets in Greece say McNamara tried to commit suicide aboard the mega ship, citing anonymous sources.

A person on the port noticed the woman at the back of the yacht tangled in rope at dawn Friday and called the police. A doctor on board and port officials tried to save the young woman, but she died in a helicopter en route to an Athens hospital.

Billionaire Baillères wasn’t on board his ship at the time of the incident, according to local media.

The jet-setting blond bombshell chronicled her travels for her 14,800 followers, and hundreds of people left their condolences on her last post, an image of iridescent blue waters in Greece.

“I have unfortunately received the worst news of my life, [Sinead] has passed away,” her brother, Jake McNamara, told The Australian.

Their older sister, Lauren, was due to meet McNamara in Greece, according to social media.

“Happy birthday to the most amazing big sister I could ever ask for, 5 days till I get to see you!!! Excitement is an understatement,” McNamara posted on Facebook Aug. 26.

McNamara, who hailed from Sydney, arrived in Greece in mid-June after traveling to Bermuda, Bali and the Whitsunday Islands in Australia. Her mother was heading to Greece on Sunday, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Authorities told The Times that McNamara was found by a crew member hanging on the rear deck of the yacht, with initial evidence pointing to a possible suicide.

A senior officer with knowledge of the investigation told The Times: "By the looks of it, she took her life. We expect the autopsy to verify this in the coming days."

Death of Australian Sinead McNamara on superyacht in Greece investigated

Model, 20, was working as a crew member on Mexican billionaire’s luxury ship

Greek police are conducting an investigation into the death of an Australian model onboard a superyacht off the Ionian island of Kefalonia.

Three days after the body of Sinead McNamara was discovered at the back of the luxury vessel, local police said they had broadened an inquiry into her death.

“The yacht left our waters last night but we are still gathering evidence,” Kefalonia’s police port official, Stamatis Limneos, told the Guardian. “The inquiry is ongoing.”

Local media reported that the 20-year-old had killed herself, with news outlets saying she was found in a comatose state in a cabin.

The model, originally from Port Macquarie, had been employed as a crew member on the 93.25-metre Mayan Queen IV, owned by the Mexican mining magnate Alberto Baillères.

The billionaire businessman is believed to have left the yacht last Tuesday and only crew members were onboard at the time of McNamara’s death. A father of seven, Baillères is listed as the world’s 143rd wealthiest individual with a net worth of $9.6bn (£8.26bn), according to Forbes magazine.

The news site Kefalonia Press reported that doctors had desperately attempted to revive the model who was rushed to a hospital on the island. An autopsy was due to be conducted in Athens.

Authorities were believed to be focusing on the six-storey ship’s closed-circuit camera. Police had spent the past three days questioning staff, another official said.

The model, who had more than 14,000 Instagram followers, had posted a cryptic message on the site two weeks ago. “Take me back to where my only worry was not cracking my skull open,” she wrote under an image showing her on a Greek quad bike before a panorama of hills.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to her family.

Devastated friends posted tributes to her on social media over the weekend. “I lost a girl who opened my mind to the world,” one friend from Port Macquarie wrote on Facebook.

McNamara had been working on the £108m motor yacht for the past four months.

She joins a growing list of young employees, enticed by the perceived glamour of working for the rich on the high seas, to have met untimely ends on luxury vessels owned and chartered by billionaires. At least three young Britons have lost their lives on superyachts, in which spas, cinema rooms and multi-level swimming pools are considered de rigeur , in recent years.

In a sector that employs more than 37,000 people, the number, globally, is thought to be much bigger.

The construction of superyachts has soared with the emergence of ever more billionaires on the back of booming stock markets following the election of the US president, Donald Trump. Superyacht sales across Asia have surged, industry figures say.

The luxury boat business in the UK has recorded record sales following the fall in the pound post-Brexit, with exports mainly to the US, the largest boat market in the world.
