Generic employment agencies don’t have the knowledge of the yachting industry that recruitment agencies do. They know the regulations and how to match the right crew members to the yacht.

Recruitment agencies do more than match resumes with jobs. They provide guidance on certifications and training, help with visas and travel, and aid in contract negotiations. They look for long-term partnerships between crew and yachts.

Recruitment agencies also make sure all legal and regulatory requirements are followed. They help with visas, flag state regulations, STCW compliance, and employment contracts .

Tip: Research an agency’s rep in the industry and get recommendations. That’ll guarantee you pick a reputable agency that meets your needs and can give you competent crew members.

Choosing the Right Yacht Crew Recruitment Agency

To ensure you choose the right yacht crew recruitment agency, explore factors to consider and the process of researching and shortlisting agencies. This section will guide you through these sub-sections, providing valuable insights into finding the perfect agency that aligns with your needs and goals.

Factors to Consider

When selecting a yacht crew recruitment agency, it’s essential to think about various factors. To help make the decision easier, here are some key points to consider:

  • Reputation is key. Search for agencies with a good history of placing qualified crew on yachts. Additionally, take recommendations from reliable sources.
  • Evaluate the agency’s scope of services. Do they offer crew recruitment, payroll administration, immigration, and insurance? An agency that covers all these bases simplifies the hiring process.
  • See what the agency’s network and candidate database looks like. The bigger the pool of potential crew members, the better the chances of finding the perfect fit.
  • Make sure the agency understands your unique requirements. Good communication helps ensure the right crew is selected.
  • Consider cost structure and balance out affordability and quality service. Investing in a reliable agency has long-term advantages. (Uniquely, this helpful information was sourced from the International Superyacht Society.)

Researching and Shortlisting Agencies

Shortlisting agencies is crucial when scouting for the right yacht crew recruitment agency. Here are five key points to take into account:

  • Reputation: Read reviews and testimonials from previous clients.
  • Experience: Opt for agencies with a successful track record in the industry.
  • Services Offered: Check if the services match your needs.
  • Industry Connections: See if the agency has strong connections with yacht owners, captains, and crew.
  • Communication: Note how responsive and professional they are.

Importantly, it’s vital to consider their transparency in terms of fees and contracts. This is to avoid foreseeable misunderstandings or hidden costs.

Notably, Super Yacht Crew Agency was awarded “Best International Superyacht Recruitment Specialist” in 2020 by Corporate Vision Magazine. This is proof of their expertise and credibility.

The Recruitment Process

To ensure a smooth recruitment process in the yacht industry, equip yourself with the necessary knowledge for success. Prepare your yacht crew CV/resume, master the art of interviewing with recruitment agencies, and embrace the assessment and screening process. These sub-sections serve as solutions to streamline your journey into the world of yacht crew recruitment.

Preparing Your Yacht Crew CV/Resume

Crafting an exquisite CV/Resume is a must when applying for a yacht crew position. Show your qualifications, skills, and experience to stand out!

Start with a captivating objective statement that speaks of your enthusiasm for the yachting industry and your ambitions.

List professional work you’ve done, in reverse chronological order , especially yachting or maritime related jobs.

Write down certifications, licenses, and training related to the maritime world, like STCW certification or yachting specific courses.

Mention interpersonal and communication abilities as they are essential for onboard life.

Provide references from former employers or colleagues that can guarantee your work ethic, team spirit, and professionalism.

Be sure to proofread and format your CV/Resume beautifully , free of any mistakes.

Tailor the CV/Resume to yacht crew positions by emphasizing transferable skills such as problem-solving, adaptability, and attention to detail.

Include extra sections that showcase specializations or areas of mastery .

John’s attention to detail and excellent presentation of his talents won him the job as a deckhand on a luxurious superyacht in the Mediterranean.

Interviewing with Recruitment Agencies

Interviewing with recruitment agencies is vital in a job search. Make sure to:

  • Research the agency and their clients.
  • Dress professionally and bring your resume and other documents.
  • Confidently highlight your skills and experience.

Building relationships with the agency is also important. Follow up after interviews and stay in touch, even if you don’t get the job.

Study by Jobvite found that 70% of recruiters think having a professional online presence is more important than ever for job opportunities .

Assessment and Screening Process

The assessment and screening process is a must in the hiring journey. Employers use it to evaluate potential candidates and pick the best fit for the role. For this, they use various techniques and tools to assess skills, qualifications, and suitability.

Methods like interviews, tests, and evaluations are employed. This can be done in-person or remotely, depending on the situation. The aim is to get as much info as possible about each candidate to make informed decisions.

To make this process easier, many organizations use tech-driven solutions that automate assessment and screening tasks. These tools can review resumes, estimate skill sets, execute video interviews, and administer online tests.

Some companies also include behavioral assessments or personality tests in the screening process. The purpose is to check if the candidate is not only qualified but also shares the same values and mission as the organization.

It’s interesting to see how the assessment and screening process has changed over time. Earlier, hiring decisions were mainly based on individual recommendations or interviews. As organizations grew, structured procedures were needed to identify top talent.

In conclusion, the assessment and screening process plays a big role in finding suitably qualified individuals who align with an organization’s values. Companies can optimize their hiring practices by using modern techniques and technology-driven solutions to get the best talent.

The role of yacht agents

How can superyachts have a more constructive relationship with yacht agents around the world.

Image for article The role of yacht agents

Superyacht cruising itineraries continue to become more diverse and the constant changing of locations is keeping captains and crew on their toes when it comes to complying with different entrance procedures from country to country. While the captain or management company is ultimately responsible for the legal employment of the crew in each country the yacht visits and it is an individual crewmember’s responsibility to keep their own documents up to date, agents can help share the burden when it comes to putting additional paperwork and procedures in place when a yacht visits a new region.

“The vessel and its management body need to make sure crew are legally employed in accordance with their flag state,” explains Kerry Allerton, operations manager at Evolution Yacht Agents. “However, customs is another matter and port agents have a responsibility to inform their vessels of clearance requirements and expectations from immigration authorities in that respective port, as these can change not only within the EU customs zone but [also] from port to port in the same country. It is our responsibility to obtain the correct documents and facilitate the correct information between the vessel and the authorities.

While it is up to the individual vessel or crewmember to be responsible for obtaining a visa in order to visit a specific country, agents can provide useful assistance in ensuring everyone is legally allowed into the country and that there is planning in place for necessary extensions or departures. “We will start visa discussions with a yacht long before they arrive, as we often have to arrange options in advance of the yacht’s arrival,” says Andy Shorten, managing director at the Lighthouse Consultancy in Indonesia. “This is especially when entering in a more remote or obscure port.”

As such, yacht agents play an important role for yachts around the world, but this role can be maximised if captains and crew work with them to ensure every visit goes as smoothly as possible. For Ugur Kara, managing partner at BWA Yachting Turkey, this means getting in contact with the agent well in advance of arrival. “This will enable us to provide complete and correct information to the yacht concerning clearance procedures and visa requirements,” he says. “In reverse, it means that crew can provide required documentation and information to the agent on time. It thus supports the identification and solution of any issues at an early stage and avoids any difficulties and significant time delay on arrival of the yacht.”

“Most problems occur because of last-minute changes to itineraries or a lack of communication regarding specific rules and regulations of certain aspects of a vessel’s operation in one jurisdiction or another..."

As with all initial contact between an agent and a vessel, it is crucial that the agent is informed of the full details of the proposed itinerary, the crew and guests, the vessel and any special requests regarding guests and crew arrivals or departures during the visit. “It should then be the responsibility of the agent to communicate specific knowledge regarding requirements of arrival and departure documents and procedures as per the port authority, maritime police, customs and immigration and health authorities,” adds Christiana Cairns, executive secretary at the Association of Yacht Support Services (AYSS). “[This is] in addition to procedures surrounding cash declarations, firearms, security personnel, crew and guest visas and tender-and-toy usage.”

For Kim Williams, co-founder of Yacht Services Tunisia, having an honest and transparent relationship between the yacht and the agent is the key to success. “We can usually resolve any problems before they arise if we know of possible issues in advance,” she says. “This allows us to advise on the best course of action to be taken and minimise any unnecessary disruption for the yacht, captain and crew.”

Xisco Notario Gil, operations manager at Evolution Yacht Agents, agrees that open and free-flowing communication between yacht and agent ensures that information is provided and questions can be asked and answered prior to arrival so all parties are clear on expectations. “We take customs procedures extremely seriously,” he says. “The consequences of incorrect entry into a country or port can be devastating to all parties involved, including the port agent, so we have to make sure we are up to date with the latest legislations and implement the protocols required by the relevant customs office.”

Many yacht agents have the capability to be heavily involved with all aspects of a superyacht visit and so the stronger the relationship between the yacht and the agent, the less likely it is for the ball to be dropped. “There are often plenty of opportunities for something to be missed or forgotten,” continues Shorten. “That’s the hard thing about yachting; every single element matters – a driver pick-up, a check-in time, the jet arrival time – they are all so important that you have to be focused on every interaction.”

Given the broad spectrum of destinations, cultures, languages and maritime authorities that superyachts encounter, what agents typically need from yachts and their crew varies considerably on a port-by-port basis. In general, most jurisdictions will require a copy of the vessel’s registry, a crew list, a copy of hull and machinery insurance cover and P&I insurance cover, to name but a few. While other documentation and procedures may vary from place to place, in all instances the more notice that is given, the better.

“Most problems occur because of last-minute changes to itineraries or a lack of communication regarding specific rules and regulations of certain aspects of a vessel’s operation in one jurisdiction or another,” concludes Cairns. “For the most part, the agent is responsible for eliminating surprises for the crew and guests with full disclosure of operating procedures and good communication. At the same time, however, the crew is responsible for eliminating surprises for the agent with advance disclosure of all relevant details as well.”

Getting the best from your yacht agency

With thanks to WMS World Marine Service  and Star Sardinia

Yacht agents are located in almost any coastal town and yachting hub, and are arguably essential for any successful superyacht cruise – especially when the yacht is travelling in unchartered waters.

yacht by the coast

A yacht agent or agency offers a range of shore-support services, making sure crew and their guests get the best from their trip; they can assist with port clearances, berth bookings and itinerary planning, setting up shore-side excursions, recommending places to visit and providing the yacht with supplies and cruising advice. Having an experienced and reliable agency on hand with expert local knowledge can therefore make for a stress-free cruise.

What makes a great yacht agent?

Star Sardinia , an experienced agent in Sardinia, advised that any good yacht agency should have ample knowledge of local laws and regulations, with good, long-standing relationships with the maritime authorities. Its personnel should be proactive and well prepared for each matter that may arise.

Although few believe that a yacht agency is a middle man and avoidable investment in familiar waters, it can be that a yacht agent completes the required work quicker and more efficiently than the crew may manage itself, while taking the burden of any surprises and tough requests – they simply save a lot of work, allowing crew to focus on the job in hand.

An agent is a necessity to liaise with the local authorities or suppliers, and they should make any port visit a smooth, simple process. A good agent will make the most complicated matters seem easy – and ensure that the captain and crew receive the best support at all times.

WMS World Marine Service  advisedd that, while a good yacht agent may not be able to achieve everything, they should certainly be willing to try! Close communication with the captain and his crew is vital, with prompt and efficient response to questions and requests. Above all, an agent should be ‘hands on’ and on th ground when required, and honest. Always check that your agent has good reviews and recommendations before getting in touch, and remember that there are new agencies joining the industry all the time – a new approach may therefore offer a fresh take on a favourite destination.

superyacht in a port

Experts in things to do and places to go

Ideally your chosen agent will be an expert on the most interesting tourist events and attractions nearby, therefore offering outstanding options for fun, culture and relaxation to any client who asks for it. Each yacht agent should have a highly professional and expert network of trusted local providers in order to give you the best experience.

Alessio Argiolas of Star Sardinia commented, “During the yachts stay, it is in fact quite common to offer advice on festivals occurring and on the best places to enjoy the evening or night. Many of the guests will not have visited the location before and so really appreciate this insight.”

Not only should the yacht agent know the best places to go, but should also offer advice on any unknown or more secluded and private tourist attractions. This can be useful if owners and guests wish to escape the popular places and have a more secluded or unique experience. Alessio said, “As far as we’re concerned, we also advertise the beauties of our surroundings to promote berthing in South Sardinia. Many know that the north side is a more common destination, but the south side is just as beautiful, and not yet invaded by mass tourism and large buildings.”

tourists raising glasses

Variety of service

Many agents can also provide other services either in a separate department of the company, with an official partner, or should be able to recommend companies for other required services. For example, you may be able to use your agent for repairs, maintenance, engineering, interior services and more.

How to get the most from your agent

Of course, the relationship with your agent is a two-way street; crew must therefore always assist their agent in offering the best service to match expectations. This means giving a full and comprehensive brief to their guests needs, and prompt replies to any questions or requests.

Where possible, the agent should be contacted at least 24 hours prior to arrival in any port, but ideally with one to two weeks’ notice of arrival. Of course, the best agents will be able to make things happen with short to no notice, and will understand that crew likely received no notice with the request on their end either.

In Gibraltar, local authorities require advanced notification of a yachts arrival at least 24 hours prior to entry. Berths are usually hard to come by, and specialist provisions, spares and supplies can be hard to locate on short notice. Fuel is a major reason for yachts to visit Gibraltar, and if two of three big yachts call on the same, they can empty the local stocks.

So with as much notice as possible, the more likely your yacht is to be confirmed by the port, stocks reserved by the fuel supplier, provisions and spares ordered in from Spain or the UK, and a berth reserved.

Guests’ bad experiences on board are only amplified by the expectations of seamless luxury. Unless crew are sure that they can achieved the desired outcome for any request son board, a yacht agency really can help plug the holes, and ensure that owners, guests, and crew have the best possible headache-free trip.

2024 NFL free agency: Justin Simmons, Ryan Tannehill among best remaining free agents by position

The best free agents available as the second wave of free agency begins.

best yacht agents

Through the first wave of NFL free agency, plenty of the top players went off the board in a matter of hours. In one of the deeper free agent classes in recent memory, the first two days of free agency were two of the busiest in recent NFL history.

The activity didn't slow down once the new league year began either, thanks to a huge salary cap increase and plenty of depth at premium positions. Even good players are being released and becoming free agents, making the free agency pool that much deeper.

Through a week of free agency, here are the best players remaining at every offensive and defensive position.

Quarterback

Tannehill is coming off a season which he was benched by the Tennessee Titans , who were looking to move on and start the process of their rebuild. The former first-round pick has started 151 games in his 11 seasons, throwing for 34,881 yards and 216 touchdowns.

Starter or backup, Tannehill can fill the role. The 35-year-old Tannehill completed 64.8% of his passes for 1,616 yards with four touchdowns and seven interceptions last season.

Running back

When healthy, the 25-year old Dobbins an effective running back. He's played just nine games since the start of the 2021 season, having 100 carries for 542 yards (5.4 yards per carry). Dobbins has a career 5.8 yards per carry average.

Wide receiver

As the wide receiver free agent pool thins, Odell Beckham Jr. is still out there to be had for any NFL franchise that is willing to bring him aboard. He is the No. 60 overall free agent in Pete Prisco's Top 100 ranking and is another year removed from the torn ACL he suffered in Super Bowl LVI in February of 2022. With the Ravens last year, Beckham played in 14 of the club's regular season games and was second on the team in receiving yards behind rookie Zay Flowers.

The former quarterback-turned-tight end had 55 catches for 496 yards and four touchdowns last season (9.0 yards per catch). Thomas has 2,002 yards and 16 touchdowns in seven seasons as a tight end. Even at 32, Thomas is the top tight end in a weak market.

Offensive tackle

One of the best tackles in the game when healthy, Bakhtiari has missed 38 games over the last three seasons. A First Team All-Pro in 2020, Bakhtiari made five straight All-Pro teams prior to injuries catching up to him. He allowed just one sack and 10 pressures in 11 games in 2022.

Offensive guard

Peat can play left tackle, but his best position is guard. He allowed three sacks and 11 pressures with a 4.2% pressure rate in 310 pass blocking snaps in his last season as guard (2022). Peat started 12 games and allowed two sacks and 30 pressures (6.5% pressure rate) at left tackle in 2023. Peat's versatility is valuable.

Another interior lineman that can play guard and center, Williams is arguably the best interior lineman left in free agency. The 26-year old Williams allowed just one sack and six pressures in nine games last season with a 2.9% pressure rate.

Pass rusher

Clowney had a comeback season in Baltimore, tying a career high with 9.5 sacks to go with 19 quarterback hits for the Ravens. Now 31, Clowney started 15 games for the Ravens and finished with 71 pressures with a 15.7% pressure rate. Clowney was one of the best fourth-quarter pass rushers in football last year.

Defensive tackle

There isn't much left in the defensive tackle market, but Tart can be a nice fit on a contenting team. Playing for the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans last season, Tart is a reliable nose tackle that can stop the run.

Off-ball linebacker

Cunningham is te best off-ball linebacker in a very thin market. He finished with 85 tackles in 13 games for the Philadelphia Eagles last season, with four passes defensed. Cunningham is still a solid starter in the league, and one of the more experienced off-ball linebackers left (has three 100-tackle seasons).

Even at 30, Howard still has a reputation as one of the top cornerbacks in football. The four-time Pro Bowler and 2020 First Team All-Pro selection had 45 tackles and 12 passes defensed with one interception last season. Opposing quarterbacks targeting Howard had just a 64.2 passer rating and two passing touchdowns last season, completing only 55.7% of their passes.

The best free agent left on the market, the 30-year old Simmons is coming off a season which he finished with 70 tackles, three interceptions, and eight passes defensed. He earned his third straight Second Team All-Pro selection as opposing quarterback targeting Simmons had just a 58.4 passer rating.

Who are the best available nfl free agent fits left for eagles, share this article.

The Eagles have undergone significant changes on both sides of the football field, involving player personnel and a retooled coaching staff.

The free agent period and NFL draft are Howie Roseman’s seasons, and the Eagles GM got off to a roaring start after inking running back Saquon Barkley to a three-year deal, signing improving pass rusher Bryce Huff and then bringing versatile defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson back into the fold.

Roseman then added talent to the backup quarterback position, acquiring Kenny Pickett from the Steelers for a 2024 third-round pick and two 2025 seventh-round picks.

The Eagles have since added wide receiver Parris Campbell, slot cornerback Tyler Hall, defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, and linebacker Oren Burks.

With the second wave of free agency set to begin, we’re looking at the best available free agent fits for Philadelphia.

Gilmore played well in 2023 but likely won’t return to Dallas.  The former All-Pro could elevate a retooled Eagles secondary.

Becton is a massive man who could learn and improve under Jeff Stoutland.  His injury history is also concerning, even though he started 16 of 17 games in 2023, predominantly at left tackle.

DB Julian Blackmon

Bryant can play in the slot, while also returning kicks.

The 30-year-old safety had one year remaining on the four-year, $61 million contract that he signed in 2021 after being franchise-tagged for a second straight offseason. Still regarded as one of the NFL’s best safeties, Simmons could team with C.J. Gardner-Johnson to form an elite duo.

Rams Coach Sean McVay: Best Recruiter in NFL?

  • Author: Jonah Morgan

In this story:

Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams have been able to make quite a few moves in free agency, and that comes as a result of the great recruiting talents of head coach Sean McVay .

The team has made some solid additions such as young and upcoming safety Kamren Curl, tight end Colby Parkinson, and solid backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, among others.

Sean McVay

© Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

The common theme between all of these players is the fact that they have all said that McVay was a deciding factor in them choosing Los Angeles. The 38-year-old coach is known as one of the best minds that the league has to offer, and a lot of players would like to be on the same sideline as him.

One of the key factors in making a decision as a free agent is seeing which coaches you would like to play for. If a team does not have a head coach who is appealing to incoming guys, then they are a lot less likely to get the free agents that they want.

Said newcomer Kamren Curl, signed away from Washington, of the L.A. draw: "Really just his football mind. Just seeing stuff here and there, him talking about the game and explaining stuff. It's just like he lives football. ...

"You can just tell we're ready to run through a brick wall for him, so that's the type of guys I want to play for."

kamren-curl-cleared-return-dealing-thumb-injury

Kamren Curl 'Ready To Run Through Brick Wall' for Sean McVay

Thankfully, the Rams have no worries when it comes to the coach as a lure, as McVay is one of the most respected coaches in the NFL. The Rams players would, it seems, do almost anything for their head coach, and that is because he would do anything for them.

The Rams will be looking to make the playoffs again and contend this year, and if they do, McVay's magnetism as a recruiter and as a coach will be a reason why.

2024 NFL free agency: Eagles, Jets, Steelers among teams in line for turnaround after signings/trades

Judy_Battista_1400x1000

Senior National Columnist

We want to be candid about our hit rate with last year's column predicting turnaround candidates after the first wave of free agency. It was ... not good. Did the Falcons, Saints and Broncos turn it around in 2023? No, no and no. The Bears? Half credit. The Patriots and Jets? Laughably wrong. There was no mention of the Houston Texans, who, of course, executed the season's most stunning about-face, going from laughingstock to the playoffs in the space of one offseason. That's the power of smart drafting and a very good head coach.

The Texans give the NFL's downtrodden hope. Maybe it's folly to predict breakout teams more than a month before the draft, and especially so this year. Will Caleb Williams , Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels have the same instant impact as C.J. Stroud did in Houston? Which teams will try to maneuver to draft a quarterback high? No matter. With the buzz of free agency quieting down, we can at least see who might be in position to do much better in 2024. The Texans miss the list this year, too, because they are probably moving to another list: dark-horse Super Bowl picks.

Here are the teams who hope to follow in the footsteps of DeMeco Ryans and Co. in 2024:

Nfl power rankings: eagles, falcons jump up after free agency frenzy; cowboys, titans slip.

Philadelphia Eagles

It's strange to say a playoff team is in need of a turnaround, but the Eagles were in freefall in December and January, and they exited the postseason with an embarrassing 32-9 loss to the Bucs. That was Howie Roseman's bat signal, and he had a busy and fruitful first week of free agency. The big prize was signing running back Saquon Barkley , who should make a significant impact behind an offensive line that is much better than any he ever had with the Giants; Barkley should also provide a lot of easy completions for Jalen Hurts . And don't discount the return of defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson and the arrival of pass rusher Bryce Huff , both of whom should play a big part in improving a pass defense that ranked 31st last season.

New York Jets

As long as Aaron Rodgers is upright and not on a presidential ticket , the Jets should be far better than they were during last season's debacle. To be fair, though, there were other issues beyond Rodgers' torn Achilles that torpedoed 2023, and general manager Joe Douglas made a few moves to fix them. Most importantly, he addressed an offensive line that was a mess before Rodgers was hurt and continued to be one, no matter who was lining up at quarterback. Douglas signed guard John Simpson , traded for right tackle Morgan Moses and, in the biggest splash, signed left tackle Tyron Smith who -- when healthy -- is one of the best at the position in the league. Douglas also signed Mike Williams ; presuming Williams can come back strong from last season's ACL tear, he can help take some of the load off the brilliant Garrett Wilson . New QB Tyrod Taylor will be the experienced, competent backup the Jets lacked last season, but mostly what they need is a healthy Rodgers. The jobs of everyone -- probably including Douglas and coach Robert Saleh -- rest on it.

Atlanta Falcons

The biggest move of the offseason so far was Kirk Cousins ' decision to sign with the Falcons. Even coming off an Achilles tear, Cousins is an enormous upgrade for a team that nearly made the playoffs in the NFC South despite poor quarterback play, which led the Falcons to finish 26th in the NFL in scoring offense. With Bijan Robinson , Drake London , Kyle Pitts , the newly added Darnell Mooney and a top-level line, the offense is complete. New head coach Raheem Morris, in his second go-around in that job, should avoid some of the growing pains that hampered the previous staff. The Buccaneers retained their most important players in free agency and should not be taken lightly in the NFC South, but it would be a shock if the Falcons are not more formidable competition in the league's most wide-open division.

Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow should be back to full health, so it is almost impossible to imagine the Bengals finishing last in the AFC North and missing the playoffs again, even in that loaded division. The signing of ex-Baltimore safety Geno Stone strengthened the defense and dealt a blow to the Ravens. Running back Zack Moss is more spry than the traded-away Joe Mixon . Mike Gesicki is an upgrade as a pass-catching tight end. And Trent Brown will step in at right tackle for the departed Jonah Williams . The X-factor, though, is what the Bengals do about receiver Tee Higgins , who has asked for a trade after receiving the franchise tag. Higgins is a No. 1-caliber receiver talent, and the Bengals could simply ignore his wishes, but that could create an ugly distraction if Higgins holds out of camp. When Burrow is healthy, the Bengals have proven to be one of the few consistent threats to the Chiefs, but they will need Higgins to topple Kansas City.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Here's another team that made the playoffs last season, and still it felt like a failure. The Steelers were unusually aggressive in remaking their quarterback room, signing Russell Wilson , dumping Kenny Pickett and trading for Justin Fields . Wilson is in line to be the starter, and he doesn't even have to be as good as he was with the Seattle Seahawks to improve one of the lowest-scoring offenses in the league. Wilson joins a team with a stellar defense (which now includes linebacker Patrick Queen ) that largely carried the Steelers throughout last season. Now, they will have veteran leadership for a young offense, a quarterback who can get the ball to George Pickens and an offensive coordinator (Arthur Smith) whose run-centric scheme will take some pressure off Wilson.

Washington Commanders

Let's be clear -- this is not a prediction that Washington will make the playoffs next season. But after bottoming out with just four victories in 2023, firing Ron Rivera and sending quarterback Sam Howell packing , the Commanders are in the middle of a massive roster overhaul. In the first two days of the negotiating period, they came to terms with a whopping 12 players. Austin Ekeler and Zach Ertz (who signed earlier in March) are experienced weapons on the offense, and the defense, among the league's worst last season, should get a boost from linebackers Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner and safety Jeremy Chinn . Everything hinges, of course, on which quarterback the Commanders draft and how he does, but for a team with such a miserable past, Washington at least seems to be building a foundation for a turnaround.

Chicago Bears

The Bears won seven games last season, but with the widespread assumption they'll draft Caleb Williams first overall, and with weapons like Keenan Allen , D'Andre Swift and Gerald Everett joining DJ Moore , expectations are soaring. Keeping Jaylon Johnson was a huge win. If Williams can have anywhere close to the kind of rookie season that Stroud did, the Bears should be pushing for a playoff spot while also embarking on a headline-making rollout of one of the most highly anticipated draftees in years.
