How to Draw A Cartoon Boat – A Step by Step Guide

Cartoon boat drawing in just 8 easy steps.

cartoon sailboat on water

There few activities more fun and relaxing as spending a day out on the water. When doing this, you will probably want to have a boat, and these can come in many different shapes, sizes and varieties!

It can be fun to own a boat or even just imagine what it would be like, and learning how to draw a cartoon boat is a great way to plan what your perfect boat would look like.

By the end of this guide, you will have done just that, and you will have a wonderful picture of your very own boat!

how to draw a cartoon boat in 8 steps

How to Draw A Cartoon Boat – Let’s get Started!

We will begin with the base of your cartoon boat drawing in this first step of the guide.

As you can see in our reference image, this is drawn as a fairly simple flat shape, but it can still be trickier than you may expect!

There is a thin diagonal section to it, and this extends into a more horizontal section for the front of the ship’s body.

This is a step where you should try to carefully follow our reference image. We would also highly recommend using a ruler for this and future steps, as it will make your life much easier!

Step 2 – Next, draw another section for the base of the boat

You’re not quite done with the base of the boat, and we will add another section in this step of our guide on how to draw a cartoon boat.

This next section will go directly above the section that you drew in the previous step. For this section, you will notice there is a lot more detail than there was for the previous part.

For example, you can see the rim of the deck outline in this one.

Once you have drawn this section, we can move on!

Step 3 – Now, draw the start of the cabin

As with real boats, there is often a small cabin on-board, and we will start drawing this now. It should be a simple step, and it’s another we think a ruler would be perfect!

All you need to do is draw three straight vertical lines near the front of the boat.

The top of this cabin will be blank, but we will fix that soon enough.

Step 4 – Next, draw a mast

Before we add the rest of the cabin for your cartoon boat drawing, we will first add a mast. This looks simple, but it is another one that can be a bit tricky.

Yet again, this is a step where a ruler would really help. The mast is separated into three sections, and each one is thinner than the last.

There will also be a thin, straight section poking off to the left, as shown in our example.

Step 5 – Now, finish off the cabin

We will now finish off the cabin you began in step 3 of this guide on how to draw a cartoon boat. First, use some straight lines to create the thin roof of the cabin.

Them, we will draw a round window on the side with a rectangular window for the front.

That’s all there is to it, and then we can proceed!

Step 6 – Next, draw the start of the sail

Now we can start drawing the sail for this boat, and we will begin by drawing a thin, wavy flag at the tip of the mast.

Then, using your ruler you can draw a straight line from the horizontal pole you drew on the mast previously up to just below the flag.

Then, there are just a few final details to add in the next step before we color this boat in!

Step 7 – Finish off the pattern on the sail

You’re ready to add some pattern details to your cartoon boat drawing in this step, and we will also add any other final touches you may like.

For the sail, you can simply draw some straight horizontal lines across the triangular sail you began in the previous step.

Once this is drawn, you can then add your own details! To finish it off nicely, you could draw a background to show where this boat could be sailing.

What kind of ocean setting would you like to create for this cartoon boat?

Step 8 – Now finish it off with some color

For the final step of this guide, we will finish off with some coloring fun. To do this, we will use various shades of browns for the exterior of the boat.

Then, for the sail we alternated some light shades of blue for the pattern. These are the colors we chose, but you should feel free to change up any of the colors as you like!

This is all about creating your perfect boat design, so you can really get creative with the colors and art tools you use.

How will you complete this amazing cartoon boat you’ve been working on?

Do this to take your cartoon boat drawing to the next level

Set sail for some drawing fun with these tips we have for your cartoon boat sketch!

A sail is a very important part of many boats, and this drawing of a cartoon boat is no exception! The sail is colored with two simple colors, but you could customize this aspect in any way that you wish.

It could be as simple as changing the colors or even just alternating them a bit. You could also draw a picture or maybe a nation’s flag on the sail to make it more distinct.

How else could you make this boat’s sail look more distinct?

Having a boat is great, but you need some people to enjoy it. Luckily, that is something you can take care of easily! This could be done by drawing some human characters sitting on the boat.

They will probably look rather small on the image, so you won’t need to make them particularly detailed. It would also be fun to base these characters on yourself and people that you know!

Once the boat looks as you want it and is filled with people sailing it, you could then show where it is sailing by adding a background for your cartoon boat drawing.

There are lots of great details you could add to the background to create a distinct scene for this boat. There could be some big waves or maybe even a small island in the background.

Also, you could create some weather effects such as some stormy weather or just a sunny day.

Another way you could make this cartoon boat sketch more interesting would be by adding some animals to the scene.

When sailing, it’s always an amazing sight to see ocean life, so you could show what you’d like to see.

There could be some dolphins, orcas or even some sharks. Having a whale would also be a great addition as you show it jumping from the water.

These are a few examples, but what are some other ocean creatures you would like to see?

They moved into floating homes and houseboats — and discovered a world of adventure and hidden expenses

  • Forget buying a home on land — some people are heading for rivers and lakes instead.
  • They're investing in floating houses, houseboats, and narrowboats.
  • While the lifestyle has perks, it's not necessarily cheaper than owning a house on land.

Insider Today

Moving into their 360-square-foot floating home a year ago was a dream come true for Sarah Spiro and Brandon Jones.

The house, located on Fontana Lake in North Carolina, has loft-style interiors with high ceilings and windows all around.

"I just love that no matter what you're doing, you can look out the window and have this super peaceful view — even if you're just doing dishes," Spiro, 27, told Business Insider.

Spiro and Jones spent $90,000 building their floating home and say it would have been difficult to buy a house on land for that price. They pay a $5,000 annual mooring fee for their floating home.

Now, they can't imagine returning to life on land.

"I guess it depends on the person, but for us, we would never go back," she said. "It beats living on land."

Embracing life on the water

Living on water is big on social media, where it's spawned popular hashtags like #houseboat and #narrowboatlife , and helped push creators like Adam Lind of @adam.floatinghome to extreme visibility.

It's also a part of the alternate living movement that sees people choosing to stay in tiny houses , homes on wheels , or other forms of housing over traditional brick-and-mortar homes.

National data on the number of people who live in floating homes, houseboats, and narrowboats is hard to come by as there isn't a single authority responsible for tracking all these housing forms across the US.

However, regional data suggests the lifestyle is still quite niche.

In 2023, there were 70 floating home sales reported on the Regional Multiple Listing Service, or RMLS, which covers the Portland area and a significant part of northwest Oregon, Portland Floating Homes real-estate broker John McPherson told BI.

In the case of houseboats, US inventory is highest in the cities of Portland and Seattle, with an average of 47 and 23 monthly listings in 2023 respectively, per data provided by Realtor.com.

The cities with the next highest houseboat listings are Scappoose, Oregon, Sausalito, California, and Johns Island, South Carolina — each had between five and 10 houseboat listings per month in 2023, per data from Realtor.com.

Comprehensive data on the trend abroad is similarly hard to find.

The Canal & River Trust, which looks after 2,000 miles of canals and rivers across England & Wales, told BI there are about 34,760 boats along its waterways. Of those, 21% describe themselves as "liveaboard."

A punishing housing market is driving people to alternatives

Elizabeth Earle lives in a narrowboat that she bought for £35,000, or about $44,000, in 2022. She previously told BI's Jordan Pandy that the lifestyle was the least expensive way for her to buy a home in the UK.

"The price for a house in England is a bit ridiculous at the moment," Earle, 34, said. "Even if you're able to save £200 a month, how on earth are you going to save £20,000 towards a mortgage? It feels so unattainable compared to how our parents did it."

Earle's comments echo true across much of her generation around the world.

Millennials are saddled with debt, struggling to build up their net worths , and getting priced out of cities. Some are moving in with their parents because they can't afford to live on their own.

Houses are also getting more expensive . In the US, most major forecasts predict that home prices could rise between 1.4% and 4.1% in 2024.

And while millennials might be suffering the most in the real-estate market, people of all ages are among those seeking out a life on the water.

"What I have observed is that a lot of buyers seem to be in their 40s, 50s, or 60s. Some are in their 70s," McPherson said.

Related stories

It's often people who are downsizing and want to do something specifically for themselves now that they're older — which is enjoy the river, the views, and boating, he added.

"Housing has become increasingly unaffordable for many Americans because of historic high prices coupled with mortgage rates approaching 8%," Daryl Fairweather, Redfin's chief economist, told BI. "This is mainly due to the intense housing supply shortage in the US — we're short millions of homes, which is driving up costs."

A recent survey by Realtor.com also found that more than half of potential home buyers were second-guessing their plans to buy a home, Hannah Jones, a senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com, told BI.

"The relatively high barrier to homeownership may push would-be buyers towards renting for longer or seeking out  alternative living arrangements  to save money for a home purchase," Jones said.

Hidden costs

But if slashing expenses is the goal, life on the water might not be the answer.

"I wouldn't say that owning a floating house is much cheaper than owning a typical house on land, but it is a much lower-priced alternative to owning waterfront property in Portland," McPherson said.

Home insurance for a floating house tends to be about double what it is for a regular house on land, McPherson said. Most floating-home owners also have to pay a monthly fee to either rent or maintain the slip their house is in.

Additionally, the float — the part of the floating house that's equivalent to a foundation — deteriorates over time, McPherson said.

"Depending on what needs to be done, maintenance could cost around $10,000 or so," McPherson said. If a float is too old, it needs to be replaced — and it's not a do-it-yourself kind of job.

"Currently, to replace a float it could cost approximately $80,000 to $130,000 — or even more, depending on the size of the house and what exactly needs to be done," he said.

Laura Woodley, 35, took out a loan to buy a narrowboat in the UK in 2020. Her repayments cost about £650, or $810, a month.

"Many people think that I'm living on a boat to save money, but I actually spend more than I did when I was renting, although I now live alone instead of with roommates," Woodley previously told BI.

A boat license, heating expenses, and maintenance costs add up to roughly another £425 a month — and that's without emergency payments.

"A couple of winters ago, half of my chimney fell off, and my heating broke, and I had to pay £700 to fix it," Woodley said. "Living on a narrowboat is not as simple as having a set of fixed monthly expenses like you would if you lived in a house."

Value in the lifestyle and the community

Money aside, the lifestyle has perks.

"It's a very serene and calm way of life compared to downtown," Kate Fincham, 35, told BI . Her houseboat is moored in Bluffers Park Marina, about 30 minutes from downtown Toronto.

"There are lots of woodlands and trails by the water, and two beaches as well," Fincham added. She spends her summer mornings kayaking on the lake.

Lily Rose, 32, lives on a houseboat on Lake Union in Seattle with her husband Dylan.

"Having ducklings and goslings pay us visits in the late spring and early summer months has been a big highlight of our time on the houseboat," Rose said.

"We enjoy taking our paddleboards out for a quick lunch break during the week or cruising down to the south end of Lake Union in our little 11-foot Boston Whaler to watch the Duck Dodge sailboat races in the summer," Rose added.

For Fincham, there's value in the community and freedom she's found through the houseboat lifestyle.

"I think it's always kind of inspiring for people to think, 'Oh, I don't have to save up to buy a condo,' or whatever. There are alternate avenues and ways to live, too," Fincham said.

Houseboat life has helped her bond with her neighbors.

"The neighbors, we're all very close, and there are always activities and game nights, movie nights, or people going for dinner together," she said. When she lived in a house downtown, she barely knew the people who lived around her.

"You need to be able to roll with the punches," Fincham said. "Sometimes it's not the easiest way of life, but I always think, for me, it's the best way of life."

Alone Australia returns – this time to wild, treacherous New Zealand: ‘The dangers are upscaled’

Applications to be on the gruelling reality TV hit doubled – but the 10 contestants face all new threats including avalanches and earthquakes

  • Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

T he second season of Alone Australia – despite the nation named in its title – opens with 10 new contestants being dropped by boat into the stark majesty of Te Waipounamu, or New Zealand’s South Island. “It’s like a lost world,” marvels one contestant as the boat drives away, leaving him stranded ashore. “There’s an ancient feel to it,” says another, taking in the tall snow-capped mountains and the smooth expanse of water rippled only by gusts of wind before adding: “It’s kinda scary.”

The first season of Alone Australia was a massive hit for the SBS last year, taking place in the beautiful wilderness of Iutruwita, Tasmania; a setting defined by stumps of trees sticking out from swamps like witches fingers, mossy boulders and hidden Tasmanian devil lairs.

Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning

“I’d like to say that Tasmania is ruggedly beautiful and New Zealand is classically beautiful,” says Riima Daher, the show’s executive producer. As the pioneering executive for the Alone format for Australia, it’s Daher’s job to create the perfect conditions for the show to thrive.

“In New Zealand everything is bigger, taller, deeper, wider,” she says. “So the landscape itself is upscaled, and some of the dangers are upscaled with that as well. It’s colder, the weather events can be more drastic. Earthquakes and avalanches are a real threat.”

Apart from the new setting and contestants (though there is one face fans may remember briefly seeing in season one), season two follows the same format we know and love: 10 contestants dropped into the wilderness, completely alone and separated from each other, with only a small number of pre-approved items – such as firestarters, axes and sleepings bags – to hand. With no camera crews or help from the production team, they must fend for themselves, sourcing food, water, shelter and warmth using only their wits. The person who can survive the longest – and handle the overwhelming loneliness – wins A$250,000.

“I don’t think anything prepares you for being out there until you’re out there,” Daher says. “You might know your own land and your own survival experience, but it’s like the plane’s crashing and you don’t know where it’s gonna land. They find out late where they’re going, so there’s absolutely no time to prepare and everyone’s on the same playing field. It’s a shock – no matter what your experience.”

There is one big change this season: participants are permitted to hunt with bow and arrow. With wild pig, possum, tahr and red deer on the South Island, this could change the stakes dramatically.

“I was a super fan of the US series of Alone, so we didn’t want to mess with the format in any way,” Daher says. “But what changes is all of the flavours that you bring to it.

“It’s a different landscape and a different survival culture in Australia. I think we are influenced by the multicultural background that we bring to the series. Australia’s such a young country in some ways, and such an old country in a more important way. So all of the First Nations learnings and that custodial approach to the land that some contestants exhibit really makes things different.”

The size and scope of South Island made it the perfect location for a season of Alone, with Daher’s team searching for specific requirements. “The first thing is finding enough land to place 10 people without them bumping into each other,” she says.

“You need to make sure there are no roads or infrastructure around them, there’s no light or noise pollution coming in so that it is truly a remote, isolated experience.

“We also need land where they can hunt and fish, and where we know there are enough resources for them to survive. And we want it to look pretty as well.”

after newsletter promotion

As spectacular as the settings are, it’s the contestants who make Alone so good. Watching them survive the wilderness and their own devastating loneliness is compelling television.

“We almost doubled in people applying for the second season,” Daher says. “What we’re looking for is a baseline level of competence. A sense of humour is really important, too – I think it’s the invisible 11th item that is necessary for survival, and people who can spark joy in a miserable situation are what makes it so good to watch.”

But while humour is important, there is a real potential for danger, and the first episode of the second season highlights this.

“My biggest fear is what nature could potentially throw at the contestants,” Daher says. “Earthquakes, deadfall, avalanches – I’m worried about what could potentially go wrong from a safety point of view.”

But there’s also a lot that could go wrong purely from a television perspective. “I’m terrified that they won’t turn the cameras on or they’ll forget how to operate them, or that they won’t be rolling when something amazing happens,” she adds.

Has there ever been a mishap where something important wasn’t filmed, or missed, or there was a technical problem?

“Nothing major, no,” Daher says, then pauses. “Look, I won’t tell you who it was, but one participant did wee on their mic pack, and didn’t film it. But we’re a little bit grateful that they didn’t do that, because our head of tech would have lost it … ”

The second season of Alone Australia starts at 7.30pm Wednesday on SBS and SBS On Demand.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippines lodged its “strongest protest” against Beijing on Monday and summoned a senior Chinese diplomat over a water cannon assault by the Chinese coast guard that injured Filipino navy crew members and heavily damaged their boat in the disputed South China Sea, officials said.

In response, China warned that relations were at a crossroads and the Philippines should choose a prudent path forward.

Two Chinese coast guard ships hit a Philippine navy-operated supply boat with water cannons Saturday in the latest and most serious confrontation between the rival Asian claimants near the disputed Second Thomas Shoal , which is surrounded by Chinese vessels in a bid to dislodge Philippine forces from there.

The repeated high-seas confrontations since last year have sparked fears of a larger conflict that could put China and the United States on a collision course. . The U.S. has warned repeatedly that it’s obligated to defend the Philippines — its oldest treaty ally in Asia — if Filipino forces, ships or aircraft come under an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

The United States, the European Union, Japan, Australia and about 16 other countries have expressed support to the Philippines and the rule of law, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila.

China accused Philippine vessels of “intruding” into Chinese waters. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that the actions of the Chinese coast guard were “legitimate, professional and restrained” and that China would "continue to take resolute measures to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.”

The Chinese Embassy in Manila issued a statement by the Chinese coast guard that warned the Philippines against “playing with fire."

Philippine Foreign Undersecretary Theresa Lazaro in a phone call with her Chinese counterpart expressed “the Philippines’ strongest protest against the aggressive actions undertaken by the China coast guard and Chinese maritime militia against the rotation and resupply mission undertaken by the Philippines,” the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong told Lazaro that relations between their countries are at a crossroads and that the Philippines must act prudently in deciding which path to follow, a statement from the Chinese side said.

He accused the Philippines of provoking incidents at Second Thomas Shoal and attempting to transport supplies without China’s permission to an illegally beached ship in a bid to achieve long-term occupation of the reef, the statement said.

The Philippines separately summoned a senior Chinese diplomat in Manila to convey its protest and demand that Chinese ships immediately leave the waters around Second Thomas Shoal, which lies in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, and for China to stop violating international law.

Philippine defense, security and foreign affairs officials convened a meeting Monday to discuss new steps to deal with what they say is China’s unacceptable and provocative actions in the South China Sea. Their recommendations would be submitted to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and were not immediately released to the public.

Second Thomas Shoal has been occupied by a small contingent of Philippine navy and marines on a marooned warship since 1999, but has been surrounded by Chinese coast guard and other vessels in an increasingly tense standoff. It’s the second time the Philippine supply boat has been damaged by water cannon in March.

The U.S. lays no claims to the busy seaway, a key global trade route, but has deployed Navy ships and fighter jets in what it calls freedom of navigation operations that have challenged China's claims to virtually the entire South China Sea. Beijing says the strengthening of U.S. alliances in Asia, including with the Philippines, is aimed at containing China and threatens regional stability.

Aside from China and the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei also have overlapping claims in the resource-rich and busy waterway. Beijing has refused to recognize a 2016 international arbitration ruling that invalidated its expansive claims on historical grounds.

Dozens of high school students, 2 adults from Connecticut rowing club rescued after boats capsize

By Katie Houlis, CBS New York Team, Alecia Reid

Updated on: March 21, 2024 / 11:09 AM EDT / CBS New York

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Nearly 30 members of a Connecticut rowing club, including more than two dozen high schoolers, were rescued from the  Long Island Sound  on Wednesday after their boats capsized.

Police said just before 5 p.m., three rowing sculls and one chase boat launched from Saugatuck Rowing Club in  Westport . Each rowing scull carried nine rowers, all males between the ages of 14-18. The chase boat was operated by one coach.

Rowing club releases statement

The Saugatuck Rowing Club released a statement about the rescue, thanking emergency responders.

"First and foremost, we are grateful that all 29 individuals involved in the incident are safe and accounted for. Two students had hypothermia and were taken to Norwalk Hospital, and they have recovered. Our rower's well-being remains our utmost priority, and we commend the swift and effective response of the authorities involved in ensuring their rescue. As with any outdoor sport, rowing inherently involves certain risks, and our club takes comprehensive measures to prioritize safety. However, despite thorough planning and adherence to safety protocols, unexpected weather changes can occur, as was the case in this instance. We are currently conducting a review of the incident to understand the circumstances fully and to identify any areas where our safety procedures can be further strengthened. In the meantime, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all emergency responders involved: Marine Police, Firefighters, EMTs and The Coast Guard, for their professionalism and dedication in ensuring the safety of our young rowers and coaches. Saugatuck Rowing Club remains dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all members, and we appreciate the continued support of our community during this time."

What led to the rowing accident?

According to police, as the boats reached Cockenoe Island, the weather began to change and they tried to head back to the club, but two of the rowing sculls began to take on water and capsized, throwing 18 students into the water. Some of the students then swam to the chase boat and hung onto the side, which caused the chase boat to sink.

Sixteen-year-old Davis Evans was on one of the boats that capsized and had to be rescued.

"It was really scary. I'm still kinda shaken up," he said. "It was really clean and then really right as we spun, it just, it got windy and the waves were just crashing into our boat and it was just filling up with water. It was really scary."

Watch: Westport officials provide update on water rescue in Long Island Sound

Police say a second coach launched another chase boat from the rowing club and began to shuttle people to Compo Beach Marina as first responders were sent to the scene.

"We had dispatch reports that were coming from 911 calls from the actual incident on the water. So the first calls were actually from someone [who] reported that they were in a capsized boat and in the water," Westport Deputy Fire Chief Nicholas Marsan said.

According to police, the temperature of the water was approximately 44 degrees at the time.

Chaotic scene in water and on shore

"Responding units found a chaotic scene of youths swimming to shore. Some of them were arriving by boat. Some were swimming. Some were still in the water between Compo Beach and Cockenoe Island," Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas said. "First responders immediately began providing care to those individuals who were on shore and coordinating the recovery of people in the water."

"When we finally got back on the beach, we had to run back on the beach towards the trucks and we were, like, falling and stuff. We couldn't really walk. It was rough," Davis said.

The rescues

A total of 27 high school students and two adults were rescued, with at least 12 rowers being pulled out of the water by Westport Marine Police and the Westport Fire Department.

Police say the last victim was recovered from the water around 6 p.m. -- somewhere between 48-52 minutes after the boats capsized.

Two students were taken to a local hospital to be treated for hypothermia. The rest of the victims were treated on the scene.

"Team effort"

"This was truly an incredible team effort by all. By the coaches that were involved from the rowing club and by all the first responders," Koskinas said.

When asked if he'll be back on the water any time soon, Davis said, "Yeah, rowing is my sport. It's what I do."

We reached out to Saugatuck Rowing Club, but they declined to comment.

The police chief says they're still looking into exactly what happened out on the water. The goal of the investigation is to work with community partners to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.

China coast guard water-cannons Philippine ship days after US backs Manila in disputed sea

C hina’s coast guard used water cannon against Philippine boats in a contested area of the South China Sea on Saturday, the latest in a string of maritime clashes between the two countries.

The skirmish comes just days after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated Washington’s commitment to defending Philippine access to the vast waterway, which China claims sovereignty over, sparking increasing clashes with its neighbors in recent years.

Video of the incident showed a Philippine civilian vessel taking “heavy damage” from the water cannon, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The AFP also accused the Chinese coast guard of performing a “dangerous maneuver” by crossing the bow of the resupply vessel before using the water cannon.

It said China subsequently installed floating barriers to “prevent further entry of any vessels.”

A Philippine Coast Guard vessel had been “impeded and encircled” by a Chinese coast guard ship and two Chinese “maritime militia” vessels, the agency said, cutting it off from the resupply boat.

The ship was “isolated from the resupply boat due to the irresponsible and provocative behavior of the Chinese maritime forces, who have shown a disregard for the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea,” Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela said in a post on X.

Beijing and Manila have long contested the Second Thomas Shoal, which sits about 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the coast of the Philippine island of Palawan. In the 1990s the Philippines grounded an aging World War II-era navy transport ship called the BRP Sierra Madre on the shoal, to help enforce its claim to the area. The ship is now mostly a rusted wreckage and is manned by Philippine marines stationed on rotation.

Recent clashes have occurred when the Philippines attempts to resupply the forces on the Sierra Madre.

The AFP said it had successfully resupplied the Sierra Madre, though one of the vessels involved in the operation could not continue its course.

In a post on Chinese social media Weibo, China’s coast guard said it had taken “control measures in accordance with the law” against the Philippine ships, which it said had “illegally entered the waters adjacent to Ren’ai Reef.”

Ren’ai Reef is China’s name for the Second Thomas Shoal – an area the Philippines refers to as Ayungin Shoal.

The latest run-in came just four days after Secretary of State Blinken told a news conference in Manila that the United States had an “ironclad commitment” to defending the Philippines in the South China Sea.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Philippine counterpart, Blinken said the allies “have a shared concern about the PRC’s (People’s Republic of China) actions that threaten our common vision for a free, open Indo-Pacific, including in the South China Sea and in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.”

Blinken said a mutual defense treaty signed in 1951, under which Washington is bound to defend Manila from attack, is “ironclad” and “extends to armed attacks on the Filipino armed forces, public vessels, aircraft – including those of its coast guard – anywhere in the South China Sea.”

In a  confrontation  two weeks ago, a Chinese coast guard vessel also used water cannon against a Philippine boat, shattering its glass panel and injuring four sailors.

China hits Philippine boat with water cannon in disputed South China Sea for second time this month

A large ship blasts a smaller boat with water in open ocean

The Chinese coastguard has hit a Philippine supply boat with water cannons in the South China Sea for the second time this month.

China's coastguard said it had taken measures against Philippine vessels in the disputed waters on Saturday — while the Philippines decried the moves, including the use of water cannons, as "irresponsible and provocative".

The Philippine task force on the South China Sea said in a statement that China's actions led to "significant damage" and injury to personnel on a civilian boat hired to resupply troops.

The incident occurred in the Second Thomas Shoal and Spratly Islands waters, according to the Chinese coastguard.

The shoal is home to a small number of Filipino troops stationed on a warship that Manila grounded there in 1999 to reinforce its sovereignty claims.

A similar incident occurred on March 5.

The Philippine military said the civilian boat was being escorted by two Philippine navy ships and two Philippine coastguard vessels.

A Philippine coastguard vessel was "impeded" and "encircled" by a Chinese coastguard vessel and two Chinese maritime militia vessels, the Philippine coastguard said in a separate statement.

As a result, the Philippine coastguard vessel was separated from the resupply boat by the "irresponsible and provocative behaviour" of the Chinese maritime forces, the agency said.

A spokesperson for China's coastguard, Gan Yu, said the Philippines had broken a promise to remove the grounded vessel and sent two coastguard ships and a supply ship into the Second Thomas Shoal waters, 18 days after the last round of supplies.

A large white ship blocks a smaller grey boat in open ocean

China has not said who promised the removal or when that promise was made. The Philippine defence ministry, foreign ministry and military leaders have repeatedly said there was no such promise.

Gan Yu said the Philippines had infringed and provoked trouble, and deliberately undermined the peace and stability of the South China Sea.

He said the Philippine vessels ignored China's repeated warnings and route controls and forced their way in.

"If the Philippines continues to act unilaterally, China will continue to take resolute measures to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests," China's foreign ministry said.

"All consequences caused by this shall be borne by the Philippines."

But the Philippines will not be deterred "by veiled threats or hostility" from exercising its legal rights over its maritime zones, including the Second Thomas Shoal, its task force said.

Footage later shared by the Armed Forces of the Philippines appeared to show people onboard a rubber boat installing floating barriers at sea, which the Philippines said came from the Chinese Maritime Militia to seal off the entrance to the shoal.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, including the Second Thomas Shoal, which is within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, and has deployed vessels to patrol the disputed atoll.

A 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration found that China's sweeping claims have no legal basis.

The president of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, told the ABC's 7.30 the potential for conflict was "much higher now" .

"We worry in the Philippines because it could come from, not a strategic decision by anyone saying, 'OK, we're going to war,' but just by some servicemen making a mistake, or some action that's misunderstood," he said.

"That's why the ongoing attempt is always to try and lower the temperature down [when] the rhetoric is up."

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Chinese coast guard ships hit a Philippine supply boat with water cannons Saturday in the latest confrontation near a disputed shoal in the South China Sea , causing injuries to its navy crew members and heavy damage to the wooden vessel, Philippine officials said.

The United States and Japan immediately expressed their support to the Philippines, as well as alarm over Chinese forces’ aggression off the Second Thomas Shoal , which has been the scene of repeated confrontations between Chinese and Philippine vessels over the past year.

The far-flung shoal has been occupied by a small contingent of Philippine navy and marines on a marooned warship since 1999, but has been surrounded by Chinese coast guard and suspected militia vessels in an increasingly tense territorial standoff . It’s the second time the Philippine boat Unaizah May 4 has been damaged by the Chinese coast guard’s water cannon assault in March alone.

The repeated high-seas confrontations have sparked fears they could degenerate into a larger conflict that could bring China and the United States into a collision.

Washington lays no claims to the busy seaway, a key global trade route, but has deployed Navy ships and fighter jets in what it calls “freedom of navigation” operations, which China has criticized .

The U.S. has also warned repeatedly that it’s obligated to defend the Philippines — its oldest treaty ally in Asia — if Filipino forces, ships or aircraft come under an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement Saturday that the United States “stands with its ally the Philippines and condemns the dangerous actions by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) against lawful Philippine maritime operations in the South China Sea on March 23.”

He said the Chinese ships’ “repeated employment of water cannons and reckless blocking maneuvers resulted in injuries to Filipino service members and significant damage to their resupply vessel, rendering it immobile.”

Escorted by two Philippine coast guard ships, the Unaizah May 4 was en route to deliver supplies and a fresh batch of Filipino sailors to the territorial outpost in the shoal at dawn Saturday when they were blocked and surrounded by Chinese coast guard ships and suspected militia vessels.

“Their reckless and dangerous actions culminated with the water cannoning of Unaizah May 4, causing severe damage to the vessel and injuries to Filipinos onboard,” a Philippine government task force dealing with the territorial conflicts said without elaborating.

The two Philippine coast guard patrol ships maneuvered through the Chinese blockade to treat the injured Filipino crew members and tow the disabled supply boat away. Another motorboat managed to transport the new batch of Filipino sailors and supplies to the Philippine outpost in the shallows of the shoal despite the Chinese coast guard’s attempt to block them by placing a floating barrier in the waters, Philippine officials said.

The hostilities dragged on for about 8 hours, they said.

“The Philippines will not be deterred — by veiled threats or hostility — from exercising our legal rights over our maritime zones,” the government task force said in a statement. “We demand that China demonstrate in deeds and not in words that it is a responsible and trustworthy member of the international community.”

Chinese coast guard spokesperson Gan Yu said the Philippine vessels intruded into what he said was China’s territorial waters despite repeated warnings. “The China coast guard implemented lawful regulation, interception and expulsion in a reasonable and professional manner,” Gan said.

Washington’s ambassador to Manila, MaryKay Carlson, said that “the U.S. stands with the Philippines against the PRC’s repeated dangerous maneuvers and water cannons to disrupt” the Philippine coast guard’s “lawful activities” in Manila’s exclusive economic zone.

Japan’s ambassador-designate to Manila, Endo Kazuya, reiterated his country’s “grave concern on the repeated dangerous actions by the Chinese coast guard in the South China Sea, which resulted in Filipino injuries.”

Aside from China and the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei also have overlapping claims in the resource-rich and busy waterway, which Beijing continues to claim virtually in its entirety despite a 2016 international arbitration ruling that invalidated its expansive claims on historical grounds.

Video released by the Philippine military shows two Chinese coast guard ships hitting the smaller wooden-hulled boat Unaiza May 4 with high-pressure water cannon sprays at close range, causing the boat to shift in the high seas.

Chinese coast guard previously blasted the Unaizah May 4 with high-pressure water cannons in a confrontation near the Second Thomas Shoal on March 5, shattering its windshield and slightly injuring a Filipino admiral and four of his men with glass shards and splinters of debris.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila summoned China’s deputy ambassador after the March 5 confrontation to convey a protest against the Chinese coast guard’s actions, which it said were unacceptable.

Associated Press writer Matthew Lee in Washington contributed to this report.
