Florida is a wonderful place to live. It’s warm year-round, with plenty of boats, good swimming areas, theme parks, and in-town events around every corner. Because most of the state is surrounded by water, there are plenty of places to liveaboard. This is where I started my sailing career, and I can definitely recommend parking your boat here.

If you haven’t yet figured out what boat to get, here’s a good start: What type of boats are the best for living aboard?

All of these liveaboard marinas have been ranked based on their amenities, security, and nearby attractions. The marinas listed all have different prices, so you can find what works best for you. All of these numbers are based on the price before tax.

In order to make a fair comparison, most of the prices in this article are calculated assuming that a customer will stay at these marinas for a year with utilities and with a 35-foot-long boat. If you have a smaller boat, then most of these liveaboard marinas will cost less, but if you have a larger boat, then they will cost more.

And when you are like me, tired of Miami, and want to see the world, here are 11 breathtaking spots around the world that you can live aboard.

Table of Contents

1. Rivera Dunes Marina

The annual Rivera Dunes Marina cost is based on boat footage or the size of the boat slip (the slip is like a parking space for your boat). If you pay by the footage, a 35-foot-long boat is about $19 a foot per month. This means it would cost you $655 a month or $7,980 for the whole year, which isn’t too bad.

On top of that, you don’t have to pay extra for liveaboard; it is very common and readily accepted here. Your electricity will be metered at the Rivera Dunes Marina since you will be staying for a longer period of time. Water, cable tv, and wifi are included for free, which is a major bonus.

They also have a free coffee bar, like most hotels, as well as bagged ice you can buy. It is a pet-friendly area. Most importantly, it has laundry and private bathrooms available, so you don’t have to worry about using facilities inland.

They also have two pools for recreation and various parties that happen monthly, which you’ll get personal invites to as an annual docker. There is also a gas and diesel fueling dock. This dock even comes with a pump-out station, which is free for annual dockers.

Also important is that they have plenty of security cameras on the Riviera Dunes Marinas Website that you can view on their website at any time. Nobody will get away with trespassing here!

2. Harborage Yacht Club and Marina

Harborage Yacht Club is going to be a little more expensive, but it is also going to be worth the price when you learn about the amenities. Unfortunately, it has a flat monthly liveaboard charge of $175 a month. There’s also an additional $15 a month for a year based on footage or slip.

It is going to be $2,100 alone for the liveaboard charge, plus $6,300 for the year or $525 a month for the footage. You will also have to pay for utilities with rates starting at $25 a month, but it will increase depending on the usage. In total, it will be $8,700 for the whole year, which still isn’t too bad in today’s economy.

catamaran marina

This place has updated its docks, showers, and laundry room for your comfort. The showers are private as well. There is also a spa, sauna, 2 pools, hot tub, and steam room for you to treat yourself. There is even a fitness center!

Upon docking, there are crew members ready to help you dock, show you around, and help you with whatever you need. There are free bike rentals and a free golf cart shuttle.

3. Titusville Marina

Titusville Marina is very cheap, with everything you need on-site or nearby. It is going to cost $8.50 per foot per month, which is the lowest price on the list so far. Electricity can range from $50-200 a month, depending on how much you use.

Titusville Marina has a store and restaurants on-site for your convenience. There is also a grocery store in the nearby town, which is nice since you’ll be staying awhile. There are laundry facilities and private bathrooms on-site, as well as gas, diesel, and a pump-out station.

You can even buy or rent boats if necessary. Titusville is also about an hour from Orlando, so you can visit the thousands of Orlando attractions. You can learn more at their website .

4. Melbourne Harbor Marina

Melbourne Harbor Marina is not too expensive, but it has a couple of other small expenses that you’ll want to account for.

First, rent is $12 per foot per month and an extra $150 per month for liveaboard. In total, it will be about $570 a month or $6,840 for the year. Electricity is metered and billed to you automatically.

You also have to pay a deposit that is the cost of a month of rent and about $50-80 in electricity. The deposit will be $6,905 in total. Unfortunately, you have to pay $30 for the bathhouse key, but it is completely refunded once you return it.

There aren’t as many amenities, but the services make up for it. Most of the entertainment is offside nearby. There is a place to fuel up onsite, but there isn’t a place to pump out. Cable and phone services are available if you need them. There are private showers and laundry on-site, but you do have to pay for the key for the showers.

There is faxing available if you need to send something. There are also some cameras and security. Most importantly, this location is equipped to mitigate the effects of extreme tides and features a hurricane-resistant harbor. If you wanna know how catamarans handle rough seas , then you check our post. In addition, it’s worth noting that information on hurricane seasons around the world can be found here.

This is vital for you and your boat’s safety. You can learn more at the Melbourne Harbor website .

5. EAU Gallie Yacht Basin

At EAU Gallie Yacht Basin, most of its expenses come from the number of people and cars that you bring.

First off, rent is $11 per foot per month, so it’s $385 a month or $4,620 for the year if your boat is 35 feet long. Then, for one person and one car, it is $150 a month or $1,800 for the year. If you have more than one person or car, it will be an extra $50 a month for each extra person or car.

Finally, AC and heat are $50 a month or $600 for a year. In total, it will cost you $7,620 for one year. There’s also a security deposit, which they don’t mention outright on their EAU Gallie Yacht Basin website .

The amenities include the basics at the EAU Gallie Yacht Basin. There is free water and basic electricity. You also have access to cable tv and wifi for free.

catamaran marina

There is a picnic area with a couple of boat shops. Of course, there are showers and laundry on site. There is a pump-out station onsite as well.

6. Legacy Harbor Marina

The Legacy Harbor Marina is going to be a lot more expensive than the other marinas we have discussed so far.

The Legacy Harbor Marina charges $18 per foot per month, which is about $630 a month or $7,560 for a year, then an extra $140 a month to liveaboard.

As far as internet goes, I would recommend getting Google Fi, it works great for me all over the world, and you never have to get a local sim again!

This area has a gym, pool, hotel (which is nice if anyone wants to visit you), and The Chicken Hut onsite by the pool. There is also Joe’s Crab Shack nearby, which is nice if you’re craving some seafood.

The marina is also really close to town if you need to go shopping or enjoy a night out. There is laundry and showers on-site as well. You can visit their legacy harbor marina for more information.

7. Marco Island Marina

The Marco Island Marina does not offer 35-foot rates annually, so this one will be based on the lowest 40-foot annual rate. It is also going to be a bit more expensive.

Unfortunately, this is going to be one of the more strict places to liveaboard and will have more requirements as a result. There are a lot of places that don’t entirely trust liveaboard people as much because of previous thefts or bad experiences.

You will have to prove you have insurance (no guaranteed security) and show that your boat is in good condition. They will also do a background check on you.

You can have one pet, but it can’t bark or make loud noises.

There are showers and laundry available on site. Dockmasters must have a spare key to your boat in case they need to board. There are also taxis available to take you to the nearby town.

Although the rules are strict, you know you’ll have a safe experience if you stay here. You can read more on their website .

8. Twin Dolphin Marina

The Twin Dolphin Marina has a lot of little expenses, especially when it comes to electricity. Electricity has a set price and isn’t metered. If you use a lot of electricity, then that is great—if you don’t, you could be overpaying.

On top of that, liveaboard adds about $50-60 more to the normal cost. Depending on how many amps you want, it can cost $75-350. It also costs $225 a month to live there, but if you have more than one person, it is going to be $125 more per person.

With this price, you have access to a heated pool and free wifi, as well as a fueling dock. There are laundry and shower areas available. Pets are welcome, which is always a good sign.

Nearby is Pier 22, which is a great place to go for a quick lunch or a fancy dinner. This place also has plenty of space, so you’ll likely be able to get a reservation here for liveaboard. You can learn more at their website at twin dolph marina .

9. Fort Myers Yacht Basin

Fort Myers Yacht Basin has a lot to offer and is very cheap. At mooring, it is going to be $200 a month annually or $2,400 for the whole year. With a charge of $100 a month per vessel or $125 if it is anchored.

catamaran marina

On top of that, you’ll have to pay a security deposit, which is one month of rent, but you’ll get that back when you leave. Then, $50 for the keycard for the private showers, but it will be refunded once you return the card.

Electricity will be metered. They will also do a background check and will need proof of insurance before you can dock.

Once you are settled in, head to the open lounge area for some free coffee each morning. Take use of their private showers. There is free wifi and pump-out available at your slip.

If you need anything for your boat, there is a store on site. It is very close to a beautiful historic downtown with plenty of shops and restaurants for you to visit. If you do have a car with you, they do have places for you to park it, but it will be $45 a month.

Here are Some of My Favorite Catamaran Cruising Resources

Thank you for reading this article. I hope you found it helpful as you hopefully start your sailing adventures. Here are some resources that I use as a sailor that I hope you’ll also find helpful. These are affiliate links, so if you do decide to use any of them, I’ll earn a commission. But in all honesty, these are the exact things that I use and recommend to everyone, even my own family. Sailboats: If you’re looking for the best boat to suit your needs, I would recommend a catamaran. If you’re interested, I can show you the differences between catamarans and other types of sailboats .

Books:  For getting started, I really like  Cruising catamarans made easy . It is actually a textbook from the American sailing association; it is used to get a cruising catamaran certification. There are some other great books, and I have compiled a list of books about cruising catamarans that you will find useful.

Communication:  Being out on adventures, whether it be sailing or climbing mountains, good communications are essential to being safe. I recommend two things Google fi (incredibly simple cellular data all over the world) and Garmin inreach mini (for text and voice in remote areas without cell coverage)

Sailing courses: Online sailing courses are great for beginners starting out their sailing career; it’s an efficient way of learning the basics of navigation, throttle controls, and maritime safety. I suggest starting with two free courses from NauticEd .

Florida Keys Itinerary

Keys - one week.

Catamaran Sailing Vacations with crew

Upper Florida Keys - 3 Days

Lower Florida Keys - One Week*

Sailing from Marathon Key you will experience the many pleasures and sites of the Florida Keys. The unspoiled coral reefs of the Lower Keys have many sites where you can tie up to a mooring ball and snorkel or dive. Hawks Channel provides fantastic sailing, as there is protection from the ocean swells but still great wind.

Dry Tortugas - One Week*

Bahamas itinerary, chain in the bahamas.

Across the Gulf Steam from Florida's east coast lies the Bimini Island Chain. These sub tropical low-lying islands are a fantastic destination for a weeklong sail. Bimini offers some of the finest SCUBA diving, snorkeling, fishing and beachcombing anywhere. These "islands in the stream" offer water clarity, which is nothing less than spectacular. You may rent snorkel gear at our office in Ft. Lauderdale if you have not brought your own. For those who are certified divers we recommend renting your SCUBA gear from Underseas Sports in Ft. Lauderdale before you head across the Gulf Stream.

The Bimini Chain is lightly populated with the center of village life located on North Bimini, in Alice Town. There are many small restaurants, shops, and bars, as well as the Hemingway Museum at the complete Angler. Marinas are abundant if you decide not to anchor out. The beaches on North Bimini offer miles of un-crowded fine white sand and snorkeling from the waters edge. Golf Carts and Mopeds are available for rent so you can explore the island. One of the most interesting dive and snorkel sites off of North Bimini is "Bimini Road", which some say is the ruin of the lost city of Atlantis.

South Bimini is primarily residential with only two marinas. The new Bimini Sands Marina is located at the entrance to the harbor and has a Customs and Immigration office so you can clear in there without having to take a taxi and ferry over to North Bimini. The other marina is located at the south end of the island. A new channel has been dredged in Nixon's Harbor that takes you into the marina. Not far from the south end of South Bimini lies the wreck of the "Sappona". This is a great snorkel and dive site.

The only other island in the Bimini's with a marina is on North Cat Cay. This is a private Island with some "high profile" homeowners. For this reason the local authorities limit the accessibility of the island for non-members. You are welcome at the Marina for transient dockage but they prefer for you to stay in the area of the marina where there is a fine dining restaurant a store for provisions, dock bar, and gift shop. It is a truly beautiful setting at the marina and we recommend this for your last night in the Bahamas. Just off the coast of South Cat Cay is a fantastic dive site. "Tuna Alley" has mooring balls and is 50' to 80' with deep caverns and crevasses in the coral.

There are many other Anchorages such as Honeymoon Harbour, Dollar Harbour. Moxom Rocks, and Nixon Harbour. Please call to speak with our knowledgeable staff for more details.

One Week Itinerary to the Bimini Islands

Day three -, day seven -, day eight -.

Obviously there can be a lot of variation on this itinerary, but it shows there is plenty to do in a week charter to the Bimini Island Chain. If you would like further information or would like to plan a different Bahamas trip give us a call and speak with our knowledgeable staff. We can provide you with a cruising guide to the Bahamas Islands as well as charts of the area.

How much does it cost to dock a catamaran?

catamaran marina

A big consideration when purchasing a catamaran is how much it will cost to moor or dock it. The cost to dock a catamaran will usually be higher than a monohull since their greater beam means they take up a lot more room than a monohull. The cost of moorage can vary greatly between different areas of the world however. Rates can also vary depending on the season (winter vs summer) if peak season is much more popular than the off-season.

Besides just the cost, the availability of moorage in your desired area is something to consider as well. Since most marinas are designed primarily with monohulls in mind, they may not have much room available for catamarans. In some places, marina moorage is in such high demand that there are waiting lists to get in.

If you’re looking for transient (nightly) moorage while out cruising, it will likely be easier to find that than permanent moorage. However not all marinas can accommodate large catamarans, so your options for transient moorage may be slightly less than that of a monohull.

Types of Moorage: Marinas, Private Docks, Mooring Balls

Marinas are the most common form of moorage, and also the most expensive – though the cost can vary wildly depending on location within the US or internationally. Marinas are often the easiest to find, having a large presence in boating guide books and apps – as well as having their own website, typically, where they list their rates, amenities and policies. In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, marina rates for a 45’ catamaran can be in the $1600 to $2000 range. In a more rural area such as Fort Pierce, Florida lower rates between $1200 to $1600 can be found.

Private slips can be rented directly from owners of a slip or association, and are generally less expensive than a marina – while possibly providing fewer amenities like showers, restrooms, laundry and marina staff. Private docks in Fort Lauderdale for a 45’ catamaran will typically run $800 to $1000. In Fort Pierce the rates are more likely $600 to $800.

Mooring balls are typically the lowest cost option – in the ballpark of $200 to $300 per month. A mooring ball with adequate swing room can usually fit a monohull, catamaran or powerboat equally well, so the cost is equivalent. They provide less convenience however, as you’ll have to dinghy out to the boat with supplies and provisions. It’s also important to make sure you have a very secure, chafe-free connection to the mooring ball, since it’s the only point securing your boat from being driven aground in a storm. There is a large inexpensive mooring field in Riviera Beach, Florida off Rybovich for example that has many catamarans.

Marina Cost: Generally 2x Monohull Cost

The cost to dock a catamaran in a marina will usually be about twice the cost of a comparable length monohull, since the catamaran’s larger beam will generally take up two slips. However, in marinas that have end ties available for catamarans, those docks will usually be only 25-50% more than a standard slip. End ties are the outer end of a pier and allow large boats to avoid having to take up two slips – however, there are only so many of these spaces available and often they will be allocated already.

Smaller catamarans like a PDQ 36 or Gemini 105 with a relatively narrow beam may be able to fit into a standard slip and pay the same price as a monohull. Marina costs and configurations can vary a lot from one area to the other, or even within the same area, so it pays to look at several options.

Moorage Costs By Region

Costs will vary a great deal throughout the world, but there are a few ballpark guidelines for areas that are known for being more expensive or less expensive. Within the US, popular boating areas such as Florida, the Chesapeake Bay, Pacific Northwest and California will generally be more expensive than other areas such as Texas and the Great Lakes. Even so, within the more expensive areas it’s usually possible to find cheaper moorage by traveling to a less popular area.

In the Caribbean, many of the options will be mooring ball fields rather than marinas. There are marinas as well, though much of the Caribbean is in hurricane zones so special care must be taken during hurricane season. Anchoring of course, is always a popular and free option.

In the Mediterranean, med moorings are common with an anchor or mooring ball for the bow and the stern backed up to a wall or walkway. In the Med, moorage prices can be very expensive since this is a popular boating area and moorage is limited. Greece is known to have lower costs than most other countries in the Med.

Availability of dockage

In some areas, finding permanent moorage for a catamaran can be very challenging. Areas such as California or the Pacific Northwest often have marinas near 100% capacity and years-long waiting lists. When the wait for a monohull slip can be that long, having the additional constraints of a catamaran’s beam requirements can make the wait even longer.

For this reason it’s often advisable to secure permanent moorage before purchasing a catamaran. In other areas, where catamarans are very common, finding moorage may not be as difficult.

Private docks or mooring balls may be advertised through Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, as well as word-of-mouth. Since fewer boat owners search for and reach out to private moorage owners, sometimes you can get lucky with finding a well-priced opportunity at the right time.

The cost to dock a catamaran will generally be higher than a monohull, but it’s possible to find better deals if you’re flexible in considering multiple locations and options. If you plan to go cruising long-term, then setting out as soon as possible (and doing a good deal of anchoring) may be the most economical option – but it’s good to have a plan for mooring the boat while you’re preparing to set off cruising.

Thanks for discussing what would be the expenses to dock a catamaran, especially how you can adjust it to work within your budget depending on the location and material options. It would also be nice to know what would be the dock supplies needed. I hope a good contractor can work within my budget for this project.

Cost to dock a catamaran in Phuket, Thailand

Docking your catamaran in Phuket offers a blend of affordability and convenience. You'll find several marinas in the area with a variety of services and amenities for you to choose from.

Daily Rates : In Phuket, daily mooring fees for catamarans typically start around $1 per foot . For a 40-foot catamaran, you can expect to pay around $40 per day. Of course, these rates may vary depending on the marina you choose and the time of year.

Monthly Rates : If you're planning to stay in Phuket for an extended period, monthly rates could be a more cost-effective option. On average, monthly mooring fees for a 40-foot catamaran range from $500 to $1,000. Keep in mind that costs may fluctuate based on seasonality and marina location.

Additional Services : Some marinas in Phuket offer extra services like maintenance, cleaning, and security, which can add to your docking costs. It's a good idea to inquire about any additional fees when choosing a marina, so you can budget accordingly.

This section will discuss some of the main aspects that influence the price, such as catamaran size, location selection, length of stay, and docking services.

catamaran marina

Larger catamarans have higher docking fees

The size of your catamaran greatly impacts the docking cost, as most marinas charge by the foot. Larger boats require more space and stability, which can result in higher fees. It is essential to know your catamaran's dimensions, including its length, beam (width), and draft (depth), as these measurements will determine the appropriate slip size and corresponding rates.

Location selection to dock your catamaran

Marina prices can vary considerably between different regions and countries. For example, mooring fees in Croatia range between €435 and €1050 per meter annually for a high season contract, while Greece's annual fees are between €225 and €525 per meter. In comparison, Monaco is one of the most expensive destinations, with a berth costing about €1500 per meter per year.

Length of stay of your boat at a marina

Long-term stays typically have discounted rates compared to short-term or daily stays. Moreover, marinas might offer seasonal or annual contracts, which can help you save money if you plan on using the same marina frequently. Docking fees for boats under 30 feet long start at $50 per day and $500 per month, with the total fee depending on the location.

Docking services available at the marina

Some marinas provide amenities like water, electricity, laundry facilities, or access to pump-out stations for an additional charge. Others might include these features in their base docking fee. Be sure to inquire about the fees associated with various services and factor these costs into your overall docking budget.

In this section, we'll explore some options, such as discounts and special offers, dry docking, and shared docking, that significantly reduce your catamaran's docking costs and put that extra money towards something else, like maintenance or fun on-board experiences.

catamaran marina

Discounts and special offers at marinas

Some marinas may offer seasonal discounts, bundled services, or reduced rates for long-term contracts. Moreover, joining a boating club or a marina loyalty program can help you access additional discounts and perks. Don't hesitate to inquire about any available promotions or deals when making docking arrangements.

Dry docking your catamaran

If you don't use your catamaran frequently or you want to store it out of the water during the off-season, consider dry docking or boat storage options. Dry docking not only prevents any potential water-related damage but can also be significantly cheaper than regular docking fees.

Storage facilities often charge a flat rate for a dry dock space, which is usually less expensive than a wet slip. In some cases, you can find dry storage options for as little as $50 per month.

Shared docking splits the cost

Essentially, this means sharing a dock or slip with one or more boats, splitting the costs among the boat owners. This arrangement is most suitable for catamaran owners who have similar usage patterns and are comfortable coordinating their schedules. Be sure to discuss expectations and responsibilities with your dock-sharing partner in advance to avoid any potential conflicts.

Marinas In The Rio Dulce, Guatemala

catamaran marina

Are you a commuter cruiser thinking of leaving your boat in the Rio Dulce River, Guatemala for hurricane season next spring?  Imagine never worrying about a hurricane and your boat!   We enjoyed this luxury for two years when we left our boat 20 miles up the Rio Dulce River (through gorgeous scenery in canyons in a National Park!) in Guatemala.

Here are some of the marinas available to leave your boat in the Rio … each has pluses and minuses and I don’t have personal experience with any except the Catamaran Hotel & Marina because that’s where we left Winterlude for two different hurricane seasons.    We had friends leave their boats at the other marinas highlighted here that were happy, so despite no personal experience, we have firsthand friend reports.  There are other places, including some new marinas and haul out facilities which are not listed because we have no first hand experience and no friends experiences.

Note that things change literally daily on the river, so this information was out of date before it was written.  I just learned (March 2015) that Mario’s was closed … but who knows ….

So use this as a starting point, but as you cruise south, ask cruisers headed the other way for first hand up to date knowledge.  When we left the US to head to the Northwest Caribbean, we were certain we were going to leave Winterlude in Tortugal Marina in the Rio…. until we kept hearing from those going the other way that we should check out the Catamaran Hotel & Marina.  So we did, fell in love, and ended up spending two summer cruising seasons in the Rio.

Here’s the “official” Rio Dulce Chisme – an online publication devoted to the area with lots of good information:   Rio Dulce Chisme    There’s also an online forum with lots of local cruisers who will be happy to answer your questions — keep in mind, all cruisers are opinionated and this group is no exception.   🙂

The list below starts with a photo of the marina, then a clickable link title (click to go directly to the marina’s website) and a brief description.  I would strongly recommend getting a list of e-mail addresses and telephone numbers before you leave to head south.  That way you can contact the marinas as you get closer and know what schedule you’d like to leave the boat.   Before you choose any marina, I would recommend checking it out – there are usually mooring balls off Mario’s or Tortugal you can grab for a night while you dinghy around and check out the marinas.  I would NOT recommend under ANY circumstances anchoring in Shell Bay or anywhere while you check out the marinas.  It might be safe, but we’ve known many instances where it was not safe to anchor in the Rio Dulce, don’t take the risk.

Catamaran Hotel & Marina

Catamaran is on an island off the shore of the Rio Dulce River in Guatemala. This may be the only resort on the Rio with nice guest cabins right on the water, a beautiful tiki bar/pool oasis, marina space for 20 boats, a full service open air restaurant, beautiful grounds featuring macaws, green, white & blue herons, green parrots, turtles, huge iguanas, all in all a bit of paradise nestled in the tropical rainforests of Guatemala. Not to mention the nightly cruiser happy hour at the tiki bar and Sunday NFL football on the big screens in the dockside bar overlooking the famous Rio Dulce bridge.   Excellent security, friendly people, laundry services, free launcha service to and from town daily, and did I mention the SWIMMING POOL – fabulous!  One of the prettiest pools we saw on the Rio.   Say hello to Kevin, the owner, for us, David & Jan, sv Winterlude, while you’re there!

Tortugal Marina

Our buddy boat friends that we originally met at Catamaran Marina stayed at Tortugal their last season on the Rio aboard sv Kristiana.  THey loved it.  Here’s some info from the website:  “Tortugal is committed to being the best marina on the Rio Dulce. You have traveled far and we have gone the distance to provide you with comfort, tranquility and security. You will feel at home here. We have built first class docks and provide you with professional boat services whether you’re living aboard or leaving the boat with us. A wide selection of slips are usually available from November through May. Advance reservations are recommended beginning in May for hurricane season, which is June through October.

All docks are quiet, private and safe because of Tortugal’s location upriver from Fronteras. Ammenities include a community room above the restaurant with satellite TV and wireless internet. Play a game of pool, or curl up in the lounging area with a book. We have an extensive library. Our bathrooms are spacious, large and cleaned daily. Hot water is always available at Tortugal. Laundry service is available adjacent to the bathrooms”

Monkey Bay Marina

Many of our friends have stayed at Monkey Bay and enjoyed it immensely.  The only drawback from our perspective is that the boats are bow out to the river with not much protection from passing wakes.  On the other hand, the traffic on the river is mostly smaller cayucos with outboards.  Rarely does a “rico” come flying by in a boat big enough to make an uncomfortable wake.   There are very nice facilities for shoreside get togethers with a pavilion and outdoor kitchen.   Cruisers provide the entertainment, from yoga classes to Mexican Train Dominos, pitch ins and sunsetters. There is no restaurant, official bar or swimming pool onsite.

From the marina website:  “Monkey Bay Marina is only accessible by water and surrounded by jungle and howler monkeys.  With no roads leading to the marina, and the absence of a restaurant and bar, the presence of strangers on our docks is avoided.  Although not accesible by land, the town of Fronteras is only 5 minutes away by dinghi.  Boat rides into town are available from the marina, and a coordinated shopping run is done every saturday, free of charge.

With 22 slips with 30 to 50 amp power, our location is 15º39.954 N  88º59.494” W.  Going upriver, we are on your port side just downriver of the bridge to Peten, across the river from Catamaran Hotel.A full-time Caretaker / Guardian lives on the property”

Mario’s Marina

With over 60 slips, Mario’s is one of the largest marinas on the Rio Dulce.  It’s also arguably the most social with regular cruiser gatherings at the famous Cayuco Club featuring everything from drink and food specials to live music and just plain fun.  And don’t forget the Saturday morning nautical flea market — if you need it, you’ll likely be able to find it when other cruisers come together to sell all the stuff they don’t need anymore!  The only thing I was unable to find was another USB DVD drive to replace mine that died!   🙂

Mario’s website also provides a nice FAQ page with answers to many common questions about Rio Dulce facilities/capabilities and other services commuter cruisers may need.  Click here for the FAQ.

Texan Bay Marina – now La Laguna Marina Lodge

Texan Bay Marina, one of the newest marinas on the Rio,  is under new ownership.  We personally knew the couple that started the marina – they lived aboard a catamaran, hence catamarans and trimarans are welcomed at this marina.   The website says La Laguna Marina is nestled in a bay off the banks of the Rio Dulce River, close to Cayo Quemado, a 35 minute boat ride from Fronteras and 20 minutes from Livingston off of El Golfete, one of the beautiful “lakes” or wide spots in the Rio.  According to the site, there are numerous stores, restaurants and other local services in the immediate area, but I would ask for the latest information from cruisers headed north.

Bruno’s Marina

Bruno’s is right by the bridge in Fronteras.  Convenient from a walking to town standpoint, and having some good food and a great little specialty store for hard to find items.   But the location by the bridge also means the noise from the semi’s that for some reason feel the need to make mega-noise from their air brakes (?) while going over the bridge.   From the website:  “Bruno’s Marina has been catering to the cruising community for over 20 years. Well established and internationally known, Bruno’s is a landmark in the Rio. Our docks have: 110v and 220v service, water, all side ties, pool, and laundry service is available.”

Hacienda Tijax

Friends stayed here during their visit to the Rio, but it’s been several years ago – but they loved it.  Across the bay from Bruno’s, Hacienda Tijax is close to town and offers a marina.  From their website:  “Hacienda Tijax is an experienced marina at Rio Dulce , having been here since 1990. Our docks are safe and secure. We can accommodate at our docks  up to 30 boats with 110/220 electricity. Potable water runs permanently from our own well, providing our customers with hot water showers and a wonderful pool on the premises. For your convenience Wi-FI Internet is also available. All this in a friendly and hospitable atmosphere surrounded by nature and a helpful staff. ”

More marinas and more information for locations I’m unfamiliar with are here on Noonsite’s page:  Click here.

Do you have more recent information on marinas in the Rio Dulce?  PLEASE leave a comment and I’ll add them to the list!   THANKS so much!  Cheers — Jan

Paradise Catamarans

Why are We Top-Rated on the Mayan Riviera?

There's a reason Paradise Catamarans is the top-ranked private charter service on the Mayan Riviera year after year. In fact, there are many reasons. Our deep love and appreciation of our planet, our country, our work, and, above all, our guests. We love what we do, and it shows in our dedication and attention to detail.

Serving our guests as they celebrate the special moments of life isn't a job. It's an honor. Charter one of our catamarans for a private excursion, and in return we'll help you create memories to last a lifetime. We specialize in weddings, bachelor and bachelorette festivities, rehearsal and ice-breaker parties, anniversaries, family reunions, corporate events, memorial services, and other special occasions.

We were the first tour operator on the Mayan Riviera to devote their business solely to conducting private cruises. No one else does it better. Whether you're looking forward to snorkeling, swimming, soaking up the sun, or admiring the sunset on the Mexican Caribbean, we promise you an adventure to remember.

Live Romance. Love Paradise. Sail with Paradise Catamarans.

What Our Customers Say About Us...

"Hands down the best I've EVER been on." For my fiance's 50th bday, we rented the Pasa Doble with a few other friends. I can not say enough good things about Frank and the crew and all they did for us. What an amazing experience this crew gives you. The knowledge, the service, the food, the drink (their margaritas are probably top 5 I've ever had) along with the snorkeling and their little bday surprise for my love. Amazing. I would not hesitate to book with them again. Seriously folks, this is a top notch outfit and I've been all over the Mexican Caribbean and hands down the best I've EVER been on. Thank you guys so much for making everything so amazing and so memorable. We will not soon forget you! Richard K. Pearland, TX

Questions About Booking With an Independent Company?

We understand your apprehension. Making a reservation with an unknown company in a far-away location requires a leap of faith. We're here to do everything possible to address your concerns, starting with the most important questions:

  • How big are your catamarans? The Paso Doble is considered a mid-size catamaran, measuring 46 feet in length. Our boat can comfortably accommodate 40 passengers, plus our crew. The Pacific Breeze is considerably larger, with a length of 75 feet and a capacity of 60 guests. Many of the catamarans that sail the Mexican Caribbean are large-size vessels, with capacity for 100 or more passengers. We feel that the size of the Paso Doble and the Pacific Breeze offers a more intimate setting and allows us to maintain our well-established reputation for quality service.
  • What is your safety record? Safety is our top priority. Our tours are generally smaller than those operated by the cruise ships and our staff is highly professional. At minimum, each of our snorkel guides is certified in rescue diving and most are full-fledged divemasters. They have also received extensive training in first aid, including CPR. We keep our first aid kit well stocked and carry oxygen on board.

Visit our FAQs section for more answers to frequently asked questions about booking your tour in the Mexican Caribbean.

This hotel was fabulous beautiful scenery of the yachts and water. There are two pools which we noticed only the front pool closest to the hotel was heated but it was SO nice that we got in a night swim too Our breakfast items got heated up which was lovely.our room had a couch, snacks items and drinks for purchase and was super clean. No coffee in the room tho, I noticed I do highly recommend this resort for beautiful scenery and a few to i ha to do like yard games and volleyball and plenty of places to sunbathe

As a lifelong Keys resident, I was really disappointed in our recent trip to the Faro Blanco restaurant and pool. The very rude bartender Kai told us that they have new management, which have changed the ways they have done things. The pool area had multiple piles of Iguana poo, which we had to walk around. Also, they put the Corn Hole in the middle of the Pet Relief area, which we didn't realize until we saw 3 dogs going to the bathroom. They wouldn't let us eat at the tables on the patio for lunch unless our entire group got out of the pool and sat at the tables. Then, when we ate our food by the pool, a massive iguana kept walking by and then jumped out of the bushes and grabbed a chicken tender, causing the children to scream and run. People around the pool and eating lunch were horrified, and it took me yelling and asking Bartender Kai for help before he came down and very rudely said to us, "You just shoo it away." He was annoyed that he had to do that and chased it to the other side of the pool where more people were sitting. When we were paying our check, we overheard him calling other patrons in the restaurant nasty names to the server. And to top all of this off, my sister got pooped on by a pigeon in a tree above where we were forced to eat our lunch (which of course was at no fault to the resort, but just insult to ingury). It was a very frustrating day, and we won't be returning.

In need of an upscale, classy refuge from your hot, sun filled yacht? This is the clean, cold, ample chill spot you seek. Friendly service. Music loud enough to create a mood. Drink here. Eat here. Wear your stilettos here. Nose and pinky up here. I hate key lime pie; but I will def be back for more right here. Not like any other key lime I've seen or tried. My perfectly shaped, delicate waistline appreciated the fresh berries.

We had a nice mini vacation here for a couple nights... The property is large. Check-in was easy. We got a free welcome cocktail and info about the resort. We'd reserved a king suite room and chose the top (third) floor. The lobby has meeting rooms off of it. There's also a couple computers nearby. Also near the check-in desk is an area to purchase breakfast items. And by leading off the lobby (just past the elevators) is the swimming pool -- in the middle of the hotel. The room itself was large and comfortable. In addition to the king bed, there was a soda and cocktail table; a large flat screen TV; a mini fridge s d pod coffee maker. Inside the d sad mall closet was an iron and ironing board and a hair dryer. The modern bathroom has a glass enclosed shower (no tub). Walking back through the property will take you past the hammocks and greenery to their restaurant. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner -- but we didn't get a chance to try it. Past the restaurant is the extensive marina and docks with boats of all sizes. The working lighthouse (in all the promo photos) houses the ships stores and marina checkin. It was a nice walk in the evening to see the yachts. Checkout was also easy. There's a nightly resort fee added to your bill (which they tell you about in advance),but it's modest. We'd booked our reservations through Travelzoo and prices were quite reasonable. We would stay here again.

I've read a few negative reviews of this place, I can say we've been twice now (April break with kids) and both experiences have been very favorable. The welcome drinks (and as many refills as you'd like) are such a welcome comfort after a long drive. The front desk team is lovely. We stayed in a newly renovated room, it was very pretty. The bathroom was recently renovated in the room as well, it looked very nice but the water pressure wasn't great. Beds and pillows were comfortable. Kids loved the two pools and giant chess board. You do now have access to the property next door if you'd like to go to that pool as well.

We enjoyed a Women's Wellness weekend here at the resort. They have a marina for boats. The rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated. The wallpaper in the bathroom was stained and needs to be replaced . They have 2 outdoor pools, corn toss, bikes, hammocks, and a full service restaurant

My blood is BOILING. This POS hotel that I booked, and paid for, over a month ago "Had no rooms available" upon driving 5+ hours to check in. Not only was the fat agent completely rude to us. He insisted it wasn't their fault. But they went ahead and booked me at another hotel 6 miles away. Oh thanks for that fatty. My theory is simple, I booked through Expedia at a good rate (still pricey, but not what they charge), once they saw that, they figured I didn't pay enough for their liking. Then fatty says, "Oh, no one called you and told you about this?" No idiot, you just looked at my paperwork and made this BS story up so you can upsell my room. Don't ever expect a room here if you don't book with them at an exorbitant rate. ZERO stars.

Arrived at 11:30am was not busy yet it took forever to get service, once we did it took at least 30 min to get our drinks. The Spicy Tuna was not fresh and we returned it back. The plantain chips were not good either as being Latin I'm used to thinly sliced with no skin . Very disappointed The only thing good was our friendly server Camilo the drinks and the ambiance of the Florida keys.

the worst meal we have had in aruba. The waiter spilled a glass of wine on me. No apology. he spilled the wine over my appetizer and I had to wait for another appetizer while me husband enjoyed his. Both the appetizers and main meals came out luke warm. Management assured me that I would not be paying the full price of the bottle of wine as a glass was spilled on me. When the bill arrived, I was charged for the full bottle of wine. I needed to go to management again to get the bill adjusted. We won't be returning to this restaurant in the future.

My husband and I were there a few days ago. (End of February) You get greeted with a cocktail. That was cute. The grounds are beautiful. Lots of green grass and palm trees. The view of the ocean was beautiful (the bay anyway). It was nice to sit at the Lighthouse Grill with a mojito and look at all of the yachts. But, the room.....could have been better. They say its a king size bed, but its definitely a queen. Super uncomfortable so much so that we left a day early. Our door was not working properly. My husband had to pick it up to make it lock. The cleaning staff was super loud in the morning. Im not a morning person and I like to sleep in. Well, you cannot do that at Faro Blanco. They were right outside our door being really loud at 8AM. The water pressure was really good. But, for what they charge, I'd rather stay at a Holiday Inn Express. At least there, you get breakfast. My husband bought breakfast for us one morning in the lobby and it was $30 for a biscuit, a cinnamon roll, a plate of "chicken and waffles" which was a greasy piece of frozen chicken and two eggo waffles. And, bummer, there's no room service. I didnt get the "resort" feel. Could have been better.
