How to Charter a Superyacht

Navigating the world of yacht charters can be tricky; our guide breaks down what you need to know.

By Kim Ayling

legend yacht on the water

As the world inches closer to normality, privacy and space are creeping higher on the priority list, making a superyacht charter more appealing than ever. However, the world of private yacht chartering can be as elusive as it is luxurious, making hiring your own boat a tricky process – especially for first-timers.

From the pros and cons of enlisting the help of a broker and choosing the perfect boat, to understanding when to book and planning your itinerary – not to mention the all-important question of how much it costs to charter a luxury yacht – there are plenty of hurdles before you even reach the water. To help you and your guests enjoy a worry-free vacation out on the ocean, Elite Traveler has compiled a comprehensive guide to chartering a superyacht.

[See more: How Much Does it Actually Cost to Charter a Yacht?]

What is a yacht charter?

If you’re new to the world of yacht chartering, even the language can be alienating. A yacht charter is the process of exclusively hiring a yacht for yourself and your guests.

While most charters are for leisure, be it with friends or family, some individuals and companies choose to hire a yacht for business-related reasons, with the undivided service and uncompromised privacy making boats an excellent place to hold meetings and conferences.

The length of a yacht charter depends entirely on your needs; some choose to book for a long weekend or even just a matter of hours if hosting a meeting or conference, whereas others opt for an extended vacation and may charter a yacht for several weeks or even months. Regardless of duration or motive, privately hiring a yacht is always considered a charter.

Using a yacht charter broker

Technically, using a broker to charter a yacht is at your discretion; however, if it is your first time chartering, using a broker comes highly recommended – especially when hiring a larger-than-life superyacht. Yacht brokers will draw upon a large network of connections and extensive industry knowledge to help find the best vessel for your unique requirements.

Once you’ve had an initial consultation, a broker will typically offer a selection of yachts that suit your needs and help you make a final decision. From here, the yacht broker will handle the entire booking process, from securing the initial boat booking to planning each element of your onboard itinerary, including docking points. A reputable yacht charter broker will also be available to contact throughout the duration of your time on board, giving you and your guests complete peace of mind.

Occasionally, first-time charters mistakenly think that booking directly will shave some digits off the total cost, but it actually falls on the yacht owner/charter company to pay the broker fees – not the charterer. In fact, you will often find that a broker will rely on their insider connections to secure the best deal for their clients.

When it comes to choosing a yacht broker you have plenty to choose from, but names like Burgess , Fraser and Northrop & Jonson dominate the superyacht realm. Some people opt for a freelance yacht charter broker, but we’d suggest only heading down this route if you have a pre-existing relationship or they come highly recommended by someone you trust. You should also ensure that any broker you work with is a member of the MYBA Worldwide Yachting Association.

How to choose a yacht

bold explorer yacht by silver yachts

Intrepid travelers with a taste for adventure should choose a sturdier explorer yacht such as Silver Yachts’ Bold  / ©Guillaume Plisson

As we mentioned, your yacht broker will do the hard work when it comes to choosing a yacht, calling upon their wide boat knowledge to present a selection of yachts to you. However, to be able to do this properly they will need a solid understanding of your preferences, requirements and budget beforehand.

The key things you should consider when chartering a superyacht are: the number of guests you want to bring on board (remember the legal limit for most yachts is 12 guests, including personal staff); whether or not the yacht needs to be child-friendly, the amount of indoor/outdoor space you’d like on board; where you’d like to travel, as many yachts are only available in certain parts of the world; and the on board amenities you’d like – for example, is an indoor swimming pool a priority or does a dancefloor sound more appealing?

The type of yachting vacation you’re seeking is also important when choosing a boat: for intrepid travelers with a taste for adventure, a sturdier explorer yacht such as Silver Yachts’ Bold or Ragnar by Royal Niestern Sand would be more suitable than a classic yacht, designed for luxury and comfort.

However, if it is your first time chartering a superyacht, don’t feel concerned about going in clueless – your yacht broker will be able to guide you through every step of choosing a vessel.

Bareboat vs skippered superyacht charter

When chartering a luxury yacht, you will sometimes be given the choice between a ‘bareboat’ or ‘skippered’ charter – bareboat being a crewless charter and skippered including a full complement of staff. However, you will find that when verging into superyacht territory, all charters are skippered for both your safety and comfort.

Again, you can always discuss the on-board crew specifications with your broker, and this is a good opportunity to outline what you’d like from your yachting experience. For example, if you have a taste for adventure, ensure that there is a watersports instructor within the crew. Looking for a more relaxing on-board experience? Ask your broker to look into securing a masseuse for your journey.

When to book a superyacht charter

When to begin booking a yacht charter is an important question. Leading charter company Northrop & Johnson recommends reaching out to a broker no later than 10 months in advance if you want to travel during peak times (July and August in the summer season, Christmas and New Year during winter), and three to six months ahead for quieter periods. However, with popular yachts booking up as much as a year in advance, it’s advisable to reach out to a broker at least 12 months ahead of time if you have specific boat or date requirements.

When booking in advance, remember that local events will heavily impact availability. For example, if you’re planning a European tour, take note of events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix when both vessels and docking spaces will be in high demand.

How much does it cost to charter a superyacht?

It’s no secret that yacht charters are expensive, with many first-timers unprepared for the hidden costs. It’s generally accepted that the biggest price indicator of a yacht charter is boat size – so if you’re heading into superyacht territory, expect an impressive fee.

However, other factors will impact the cost of chartering a superyacht , such as crew reputation, ship design and the age of the vessel. For example, Fraser Yachts offer a week on the 298.5-ft Moonlight II which was first built in 2005 from €645,000 (approximately $768,200), but prices for the 278-ft Solandge, which was built in 2013 and refitted in 2019, begin at €1m ($1.2m) per week.

Although some charter costs are inclusive, meaning expenses such as captain and crew, fuel, food and drink are included, you’ll find that a ‘plus expenses’ charter is more common. With such charters, only the crew and ship are included in the price, an ‘Advance Provisioning Allowance’ (APA) is used to cover the necessary extras and is usually around 30% of the weekly charter fee. What the APA doesn’t cover however is crew gratuity which although given at your discretion, is expected, with the going rate around 15-20%.

To avoid tarnishing your vacation with unexpected fees and charges, ask your broker for a full price breakdown beforehand, including any potential docking fees and additional taxes.

How Much Does It Cost to Go on a Superyacht?

Posted June 27, 2022 in Charter by Janine St.Denis

Yacht charters have become popular in recent years because they offer all the same amenities of renting a gorgeous luxury villa without the crowds and impersonal vibe of cruise travel. You have ownership of the yacht for the duration of your trip, which adds a layer of freedom that appeals to adventure seekers around the world. A yacht charter is the ultimate luxury experience.

Depending on the size, amenities, and condition of the yacht, superyachts can cost anywhere from $4,000 /week to over $2 million /week plus expenses.

In this article, we’ll detail the differences between a yacht and a superyacht and explore how much it is to go on a superyacht .

What’s the Difference Between Yachts and Superyachts?

Yachts come in several classifications, which means you have a variety to choose from.

What Is a Yacht?

A yacht is a recreational sea vessel used for entertainment, like cruising, water sports, or fishing . At a minimum, a yacht includes sleeping quarters, a kitchen, and a bathroom. There is no set standard definition, but the term applies to a ship with amenities that can accommodate overnight use.

What Is a Superyacht?

Superyachts are the gold standard in luxury yachting. They can accommodate six passengers at a minimum, but often host more than 10 passengers and a robust crew. Many superyachts have a variety of deluxe amenities like:

  • Swimming pools
  • Tennis courts
  • Outdoor cinemas
  • Helicopter pads

What Is Included in the Price of a Superyacht Charter ?

Superyacht charter prices are typically quoted at weekly rates. This will account for about 60–70% of the total cost. For a superyacht, expect to pay $100,000 or more per week.

Charter prices include:

  • Yacht rental
  • All equipment and amenities
  • Crew salary
  • Additional services

The more extravagant your vessel, the more you can expect to pay.

What Is Not Included in the Price of a Yacht Charter?

Yacht charters are generally “all-inclusive,” but this doesn’t include things like tips and taxes. Here is a list of a few things that are not included when you rent a superyacht:

  • Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). APA covers provisions while onboard, including any specific requests you may have and several variable costs (including port fees, excursions, etc.). It’s a standard system managed by your captain. The crew uses this allowance to purchase products of your choosing and for taxis, communication fees, port fees, and other expenses that are difficult to budget for ahead of time.
  • Taxes and VAT rates. Taxes are not included in superyacht charter prices. You will also be subject to VAT rates when chartering a yacht in Europe.
  • Crew gratuity. Your superyacht will come with an expansive and experienced crew. You’ll want to factor their gratuity into your overall costs. They’re at your service nearly 24/7, so it’s customary to leave them a tip at the end of your charter.

Yacht Charter Costs To Consider

Here are a few other factors that may influence how much your yacht charter is :

  • The size of the yacht. You’ll pay a weekly rate of $100,000 or more for a superyacht charter rental. If you want something smaller, the price varies between $20,000 and $80,000. For a megayacht rental (much bigger than a superyacht), you can expect to pay upwards of a million dollars. The larger the yacht, the higher the cost.
  • Seasonal influences. Depending on the destination, certain times of year are more expensive than others. For example, the Caribbean costs more during the winter, whereas in the Mediterranean, the summer months are pricier.
  • Exotic destinations. Exotic destinations cost more. The Galápagos Archipelago is a great example. Since yacht fleets are limited there, prices are higher. The Mediterranean is easier to access and thus less expensive.

The world of superyacht chartering is a realm of opulence, luxury, and unparalleled experiences. For those who seek the epitome of lavish travel, super yachts and mega yachts offer an tempting allure. This article delves into the key factors that impact clients when renting these floating palaces, including some of the largest and most expensive yachts globally. Additionally, we’ll highlight the importance of considering the environmental impact when making decisions about what superyacht to charter.

Size Matters – Mega Yacht vs. Superyacht Charter

When it comes to super yacht charter, the first decision often revolves around size. Superyachts and Mega yachts are the giants of the maritime world, but they come with different dimensions and experiences.

Mega Yacht Charter

Mega yachts are massive vessels that exceed 100 meters (328 feet) in length. They boast impressive size and can accommodate numerous guests and crew members. The larger size allows for greater stability, offering a smoother cruising experience even in rough waters. Mega yachts often feature multiple decks, swimming pools, helipads, and even mini-submarines.

Superyacht Charter

Superyachts are slightly smaller, typically ranging from 24 to 100 meters (79 to 328 feet) in length. They offer a more intimate experience compared to mega yachts, making them ideal for smaller groups or families. Superyachts still provide opulent amenities but on a slightly smaller scale, with spacious cabins, lounges, and water toys.

Tradeoff : The choice between mega yachts and superyachts boils down to personal preference and the number of guests. While mega yachts offer unmatched extravagance and space, superyachts provide a cozier atmosphere.

The Price of Luxury

Luxury yacht charters are synonymous with lavishness, but the cost can vary significantly depending on several factors.

Factors Influencing the Price of a Superyacht Charter

  • Yacht Size : Larger yachts typically come with higher charter costs due to increased maintenance and crew requirements.
  • Amenities : Yachts equipped with extravagant amenities like cinema rooms, spas, and gourmet kitchens command a premium price.
  • Destination : Some destinations have higher operational costs, impacting the overall charter price.
  • Season : Chartering during peak seasons in popular cruising regions can be substantially more expensive.
  • Additional Expenses : Fuel, crew gratuities, and provisioning are additional costs that should be factored in.

Tradeoff : Clients must strike a balance between their budget and desired level of luxury. Opting for a slightly smaller yacht or considering offseason charters can help manage costs.

Charting Your Course – Destinations and Itineraries

Selecting the right destination and itinerary is a crucial aspect of super yacht chartering. The world is a vast playground, offering a multitude of experiences.

Popular Superyacht Charter Destinations

  • Mediterranean : The Mediterranean is a perennial favorite, offering a blend of historic ports, picturesque coastlines, and vibrant nightlife.
  • Caribbean : Crystal-clear waters, idyllic islands, and a laid-back atmosphere make the Caribbean a top choice.
  • South Pacific : The South Pacific beckons with its remote islands, coral reefs, and untouched natural beauty.
  • Alaska : Adventurous souls seek the raw beauty of Alaska’s fjords, glaciers, and abundant wildlife.

Tradeoff : The choice of destination often entails tradeoffs between culture, climate, and activities. Clients must consider their preferences, whether it’s exploring ancient ruins, lounging on pristine beaches, or embarking on adrenaline-pumping adventures.

Superyacht Charter Crew and Service Excellence

A hallmark of luxury yacht charters is the exceptional crew and service provided to clients. The quality of the crew can significantly impact the overall experience.

The Crew’s Role in Luxury Yacht Charter

  • Captain : The captain is responsible for navigation, safety, and ensuring the smooth running of the vessel.
  • Chef : A skilled chef can elevate the culinary experience onboard, tailoring menus to guest preferences.
  • Steward(ess) : Stewards and stewardesses attend to guests’ needs, ensuring their comfort and enjoyment.
  • Deck Crew : Deckhands and water sports instructors facilitate activities like snorkeling, diving, and watersports.

Tradeoff : Investing in a highly experienced and skilled crew enhances the luxury quotient but can also increase charter costs. Balancing crew quality with budget constraints is a key consideration.

Environmental Consciousness in Chartering

In an era of increasing environmental awareness, chartering a luxury yacht also comes with ethical responsibilities.

Environmental Impact of Luxury Superyacht Charter

  • Fuel Consumption : Large yachts can consume substantial amounts of fuel, contributing to carbon emissions.
  • Marine Conservation : Charterers must be mindful of fragile marine ecosystems and protected areas.
  • Waste Management : Proper disposal of waste at sea is crucial to minimize environmental harm.

Eco-Friendly Charter Options : Some charter companies offer eco-friendly yachts with hybrid propulsion systems, advanced wastewater treatment, and sustainable practices.

Tradeoff : Balancing the desire for opulence with eco-consciousness requires clients to seek out environmentally responsible charter options and make conscientious choices while on board.

The Largest and Most Expensive Yachts

For those with no budget constraints, the world of luxury yacht charter unveils a roster of the largest and most expensive vessels.

Top Mega Yachts and Superyachts for Charter

  • Azzam : Currently the largest yacht in the world, Azzam measures a staggering 180 meters (590 feet) and offers unmatched opulence.
  • Eclipse : Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Eclipse boasts features like a missile defense system and two helipads.
  • Rising Sun : With a length of 138 meters (452 feet), Rising Sun is a popular choice among celebrities and offers a range of luxurious amenities.

Tradeoff : Chartering one of these behemoths comes with a price tag that matches their grandeur. However, it’s an experience that’s truly in a league of its own.

Chartering for Special Occasions

Luxury yacht charters are often chosen for special occasions, and they can be customized accordingly.

Special Occasions on Luxury Yachts

  • Weddings : Yacht weddings in picturesque locations provide a romantic backdrop.
  • Anniversaries : Celebrate milestones with a private charter and custom-designed experiences.
  • Corporate Retreats : Yacht charters offer a unique setting for team-building and corporate events.

Tradeoff : While these experiences are unparalleled, clients must carefully plan and budget for the specific demands of their special occasion.

Booking Your Dream Superyacht Charter

Booking a luxury yacht charter is a meticulous process that involves several steps.

Steps to Booking a Luxury Yacht Charter

  • Define Your Preferences : Determine your budget, group size, destination, and must-have amenities.
  • Research Charter Companies : Investigate reputable charter companies and their fleets.
  • Itinerary Planning : Work with charter brokers to plan your itinerary, considering the desired activities and sights.
  • Negotiate Terms : Review contracts, negotiate pricing, and confirm all details with the charter company.

Tradeoff : The tradeoff here is the time and effort invested in the booking process. However, meticulous planning ensures a smooth and memorable experience.

Luxury yacht charters offer a unique and extravagant way to explore the world’s oceans while enjoying unparalleled comfort and service. Clients must carefully weigh factors like yacht size, budget, destination, crew quality, and environmental impact to make the best choice for their dream charter. Whether it’s a mega yacht or a superyacht, an eco-conscious charter or a lavish celebration, the world of luxury yacht chartering caters to diverse tastes and desires.

Navigating Your Luxury Journey for Superyacht Charter

Embarking on a luxury yacht charter is a journey unlike any other. It’s a blend of opulence, adventure, and ethical considerations, and finding the right balance is key. As you set sail on your charter, remember that the world’s oceans are not just a playground; they are also a precious resource that deserves respect and protection. So, charter wisely, explore responsibly, and savor every moment of your unforgettable voyage aboard a luxury yacht.

Prices for renting a luxury yacht

The cost of renting a luxury yacht can vary significantly based on a variety of factors, including the size of the yacht, its amenities, the destination, and the time of year. Below are some approximate price ranges for renting the types of yachts mentioned.

Mega Yachts

  • Small to Medium Mega Yachts (100-150 feet): These can range from approximately $50,000 to $200,000 per week.
  • Large Mega Yachts (over 150 feet): Chartering one of the largest mega yachts can cost anywhere from $200,000 to several million dollars per week, depending on the yacht’s size, amenities, and location.

Superyachts

  • Small to Medium Superyachts (80-120 feet): Weekly charter prices for these can start at around $20,000 and go up to $100,000 or more.
  • Larger Superyachts (120-200 feet): Chartering a larger superyacht can range from approximately $100,000 to $500,000 or more per week.

Top Mega Yachts and Superyacht Charter

  • Azzam (largest yacht in the world): Chartering Azzam could cost upwards of $1 million per week.
  • Eclipse (Roman Abramovich’s yacht): Eclipse’s charter rates can be in the range of $2 million to $3 million per week.
  • Rising Sun: Chartering Rising Sun may cost around $4 million to $5 million per week.

It’s important to note that these are rough estimates, and the actual cost of chartering a yacht can vary widely based on specific yacht features, the duration of the charter, additional expenses (such as fuel, crew gratuities, and provisioning), and the chosen destination. Additionally, during peak seasons in popular cruising regions, prices tend to be at their highest.

Charter rates often include the yacht itself, crew salaries, standard amenities, and insurance. However, clients should be prepared for additional expenses, such as fuel, food and beverages, port fees, and crew gratuities, which can add a significant amount to the overall cost.

To get precise pricing for a particular yacht and itinerary, it’s advisable to consult with reputable yacht charter brokers or companies, who can provide detailed quotes tailored to your specific preferences and needs.

SUPERYACHT LIFE

Top tips for a first superyacht charter

A superyacht charter is one of the most extraordinary holiday experiences it’s possible to have, but if you’ve never done it before it can be daunting to know where to start. Here are some top tips for first-time yacht charterers.

When you first approach a superyacht, whether by car to a quay or by luxury tender to the middle of a stunning anchorage, there’s nothing quite like the feeling. With a professional crew whose sole focus is your pure enjoyment, and all the facilities of a luxury villa, a seven-star hotel and a watersports resort combined into the most extraordinary piece of design and engineering most of us will ever see, a superyacht holiday with family and friends can deliver the most unique and bespoke of experiences and create memories that will last a lifetime. The adventure and relaxtion a yacht offers can also be your first taste of the superyachting good life – whether you decide to try yacht chartering again or maybe take the plunge into yacht ownership.

“A superyacht charter is like no other holiday you have had,” says Catherine Wilson, a New York-based charter broker for brokerage house Burgess. “Everything is tailored to you and your guests, from food preferences (with your own personal chef) to even the itinerary. Between yourself, the captain and your charter broker you will plan your perfect trip – and if you turn up at a port and the weather isn’t quite what you wanted, well, then you can just move on. A superyacht charter is just like renting a private island, but this island can move.”

That’s not all. “The crew are solely focused on you as guests on board the yacht – you’re not just going to a hotel’s restaurant and ordering from a menu. It’s the ultimate way of being bespoke,” adds Rupert Wakeley, senior charter broker at TJB Super Yachts. “And you see a country in a way you never could from a hotel, and you’re seeing places that are inaccessible by any other means. Finally,” he says, “there’s the privacy a superyacht offers.”

If the idea of chartering a superyacht is tempting but it’s something you’ve never done before – or perhaps you’ve never even set foot on a yacht before – it can be a daunting proposition. How do you choose which yacht, and where should you go? What’s included in the fee and what is extra? Are superyachts safe and, perhaps most importantly, will I feel seasick? Thankfully, for those who want a taste of the superyachting good life there are experts who can help – and who can make the whole process seamless. Here are some tips from charter brokers on how to get started, and some answers to common first-timer questions.

Top tips for a first superyacht charter

Family onboard St David

Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

If you’re not sure where to get started, a charter broker will be able to help with professional advice, because there isn’t always one answer – it depends entirely on the party, and what you’re looking for in a charter holiday and as amenities on the yacht. Remember, a superyacht charter is a tailored experience.

“If there is a particular destination and time you are looking for your charter broker will source a number of suitable yachts for you to choose from,” Wilson advises. “The broker would have handpicked these yachts based on your criteria, taking into account age ranges of the party, activities, whether the yacht is family-friendly or even if you are planning a big celebration. They will also know the crew on each yacht so they can select the best match.”

Says Wakeley: “It all starts with understanding the client and the group of people coming on board, and thinking about what you are after – are you looking for pure seclusion and going to hidden beaches and coves, or do you want to be on the dock every night? Sometimes you may have a destination in mind already, for which an experienced broker can then recommend the best yachts for your needs; sometimes for a first-time charter we might recommend particular destinations that serve as a great introduction to what superyacht charter is all about.”

Top tips for a first superyacht charter

How do you know it’s for you?

The idea of spending a week or two on a yacht can also bring with it certain concerns – will it be comfortable, how much motion is there and will it feel safe? Fortunately, modern superyachts are not only built to the very highest standards of luxury, they are also built to the very highest standards of safety. What’s more, your broker can select only yachts that have stabilisers for you, which counteract the rolling motion under way and at anchor and can therefore mitigate any potential for seasickness. Further, the total flexibility of a superyacht charter means you can enjoy the yacht in the way that suits you.

For Wakeley, the stabiliser technology that keeps a motor yacht level and more-or-less still in the waves is one aspect, but there are also alternative types of vessel that might suit. “There are some incredible catamarans now,” he advises, “and a catamaran is like being on your own moving villa because they are absolutely huge and they are super stable – they can be a great platform to get started on.”

“A yachting holiday allows the best of both worlds,” adds Wilson. “You can spend all your time onboard or you can island-hop and spend your days ashore. You can use the yacht as your own private beach – sunbathe, and then get the watertoys out before an alfresco lunch on deck, or you can take the yacht’s tender and head into port to explore. The tender will be at your beck and call too.”

What is included in the charter fee?

While charter rates vary from high to low season and from yacht to yacht, they essentially are structured the same way. As Wilson points out, the fee includes the hire of the vessel, all amenities on board including the watertoys, and the crew. VAT or tax will be charted on the charter fee depending on your country of embarkation, and there’s also what’s known as the advance provisioning allowance – or APA – which is essentially your onboard expense account for all operating expenses incurred while on the yacht such as food and drinks, fuel, port and agency fees.

“The APA is collected as between 30-40% of the charter fee, and a crew gratuity is also recommended between 10-20% of the charter fee based on your experience on board,” says Wilson. “If there is a balance remaining in the APA at the end of the charter, most clients put this toward the gratuity. Also, a preference form will be provided prior to your charter which covers everything from dietary restrictions to beverage requests and even how you like your coffees in the morning.” The more detail provided, she says, the better prepared the crew will be for your time on board.

“All the food, fuel and any other costs are all charged without mark-up,” adds Wakeley. “The APA is there simply to cover any and all ad hoc expenses, and essentially it’s there to make your holiday as relaxing as possible because when you’re on board you don’t need to reach into your pocket at all. It’s also a very fair way of setting costs, because if you eat dinner ashore every night, you’re not going to be charged the costs for dinner on board.”

How accessible is charter and how important is the broker?

We’ve all see the headlines of superyachts that reportedly cost hundreds of millions to build and are chartering for millions of dollars, but the truth is that there are only a tiny number of these giants – the vast majority of the superyacht fleet comprises yachts at the smaller end of the scale, starting at around 30 metres in length. This also translates into superyacht charter being a much more accessible proposition than most people realise – as Wilson points out, chartering a 30 metre yacht can start at around €50,000, which split between three or four couples, for example, is comparable to many villa rentals or high-end hotel stays. Wakeley adds that entry-level charters on a yacht large enough to give you a taste of the superyachting good life can start from as little as €25,000 per week.

“There are 2,000 superyachts in charter, and it’s our job as brokers to understand what a client’s needs are and which one will work for them,” says Wakeley, adding that it’s also important not to try to create too intense an itinerary for your first charter so you can enjoy the complete flexibility a superyacht offers.

“A superyacht charter is an expensive holiday and therefore it is extremely important that it runs smoothly,” Wilson advises. “There are many factors to figure into the experience so by choosing a reputable and knowledgeable broker to assist you through the process can mitigate a lot of potential issues. A broker spends their time researching the yachts spending time with the crew and are experts in negotiating the best deals. And if you are wondering if you will like it, the best thing to do is try it,” she concludes. “Most people never look back!”

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

charter on superyacht

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

' src=

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

Food and Footprints

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

' src=

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

' src=

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!

Charter yacht of the week: Come Together, the 60m Amels that awakened a wildly successful series

Each week we place a spotlight on one of the world’s finest superyachts for charter . This week, BOAT steps on board 60-metre Come Together in Antigua to discover how the first yacht in the new Amels Limited Editions series surpassed expectations…

Following in the footsteps of perhaps the most successful superyacht series in history, there was no question that 60-metre Come Together , the first of the new series, needed to be brilliant. Predictably it was, thanks to a mighty design collaboration with Espen Øino for the geometric exterior.

Coined after a Beatles song, it's fitting that Come Together's owner chose British studio, Winch Design to fine-tune her interiors. Together with the experienced owner – who the studio had previously collaborated with on the 83-metre Here Comes the Sun – Winch Design had a clear vision of what the owner wanted – a warm, communal design that borrows design from the natural world but offers a little bit of an edge.

It was 2022 when Come Together finally hit the water. The market was edging back to normality after two years of Covid and the industry welcomed 350 new superyachts to the fleet . But while the industry’s 100-metre behemoths were making waves, our readers were understandably intrigued by the new Limited Editions. Naturally, the reveal of Come Together’s interiors was one of BOAT's biggest stories at the time.

The 60-metre yacht then went on to her inaugural charter season, after which Y.CO, her central agency for charter, identified her as one of their booked-up, in-demand yachts of the summer with glowing reviews from past charterers on both the design and the crew.

Key Features

LOA: 60m Year : 2022 Builder: Amels Guests: 12 Cabins: 6 Summer Locations: West Mediterranean, East Mediterranean

Geometric, perfectly proportioned, and contemporary, this is the mighty result of Øino’s work. But this was no easy feat as he explains; “You are designing a boat for a market, not an individual. You can’t go too crazy because you are trying to hit the maximum percentage of people who would like it but, at the same time, it needs to look a bit different – it can’t just be another boat. It’s a fine line.”

The design is punctuated by her large trapezoid windows and a metallic hull that appears to encase the white superstructure. The unique pebble colour of the hull was an achievement as the metallic hue required the painting to be completed in one shot in order to accomplish the same tones across the hull. For this, it took 12 painters to spray in one tent simultaneously.

Life on board Come Together?

Stepping on board you’ll discover why Come Together’s exteriors are the way they are, as light pours through her windows and illuminates the neutral tones of her interior. Her main saloon is endowed with a geometric light fixture - a nod to her exteriors – and an earthy palette of materials that includes Jerusalem limestone, light-bleached matte oak, light-tone walnut and bronze.

Elsewhere you’ll find plush sofas to fill her convivial spaces, as well as a bespoke games table created by Hull Studio and a dining table that can be extended to squeeze in an extra dinner date. In a nod to to the Beatles song that shares the boat’s name, guests will find a guitar in the upper saloon along with a Golden Spider marble bar.

Accommodation on board is for 12 guests across six cabins, incluging the vast owners suite which is bathed in light thanks to her full height windows. Here a large folding balcony opens up while the yacht is at anchor, transforming into a 7-square-metre terrace.

Out on deck

Crowning the yacht is a 27-metre-long sundeck that features an outdoor cooking station with a teppanyaki grill and an extendable dining table that seats up to 18 guests for occasional dining; the space can also be set up as an outdoor cinema where guests can cosy up under the stars.

“The sun deck is a real highlight,” said Y.CO’s Sioned Williams, Come Together 's charter manager. “It’s extremely spacious and offers huge variety. There are DJ decks that are ideal for entertainment, as well as a teppanyaki grill and bar in the middle, a large Jacuzzi, and plenty of space for sunbathing or yoga and workout sessions. Her beach club, which has a spacious sauna, is also a standout spot.”

She was designed to be a beachhouse on-the-water – and how better to encapsulate this than her magnificent beach club. Home to a mammoth 38-square metre swim platform, this is where you come to bask in Come Toghether’s adventurous side. Here you’ll find her high-octane selection of toys, which includes jet skis, sea bobs, E-foils and snorkelling gear. When you’re finished frolicking in the water, guests can relax in her vast beach club with its ice bath and sauna.

“Charterers always comment that the crew are a real highlight with reviews frequently mentioning how delicious the food is,” added Williams. “The signature cocktails they’ve enjoyed and the inventive ways the crew keep families entertained (think Olympics-style tournaments) are a real highlight. Their stylish uniforms are always complimented by anybody who comes on board too.”

Where will Come together be chartering this summer?

Come Together will be available to charter in the East and Western Mediterranean this summer. She is available to charter with Y.CO with a weekly rate starting from €450,000.

Reverie by Winch Design for Oceanco

Oceanco has a well-earned reputation for building some of the largest and most recognizable superyachts in the world. But as I’ve learned during visits to their main shipyard in The Netherlands, and at various boat shows around the world, the Oceanco team is always looking for innovative new ways to design and build their special breed of superyachts.

So, I was intrigued when I saw Oceanco had launched its Simply Custom program that’s specifically designed to streamline the process of designing and building an 80-meter (262ft) yacht. Since 80 meters is the “sweet spot” for lots of new superyachts in build these days, I was hardly surprised to see their innovative new program focus on the 80-meter range.

But what did surprise me was just how “holistic” the Simply Custom program is because they’re introducing way more than just another new superyacht design. They’ve also partnered with Lateral Naval Architects and numerous other firms to design a state-of-the-art technical platform that’s ready to build today, while also being flexible enough to upgrade and modify as new breakthroughs in propulsion and other key areas come on line in the future

Clarity by Espen Oino International

“We created Simply Custom because we saw there was a growing demand to build custom yachts in a new way. Owners still want the very best quality in their yachts, and to have something designed and built just for them. But many have less desire to focus on every detail in the process. They expect to entrust technical matters to experts like Oceanco and our partners. And, perhaps most importantly, they want building a yacht to be simple and fun,” explains Oceanco’s Group Marketing Director, Paris Baloumis.

But I have to be honest, Oceanco’s ability to have all of the world’s best yacht designers submit their vison for what the ultimate 80-meter superyacht might be the coolest thing of all. Here are just a few designs from Oceanco’s ultimate superyacht wish list !

Espen Øino International

Espen Oino International's submission in Oceanco's Simply Custom program.

Espen Øino explains the thinking behind his firm’s submission they call Clarity . “When asked to participate in designing a yacht for Oceanco’s Simply Custom Collection, my team and I were inspired by one word: SIMPLE! What does simple mean? To solve a problem in an efficient, elegant, and smart way.

“Inspired by this definition, we went off to solve some challenges in a simple yet smart way. The yacht features very large overhangs in the superstructure to provide shade and to reduce the heat gain inside the vessel on the decks below. The excess surfaces above we used for photovoltaic cells.

The gloriously simple main deck onboard Espen Oino International's submission to Oceanco's Simply ... [+] Custom program.

“The main deck lounge is designed as a large winter garden, which can be opened to make use of the wind as natural ventilation. The overall objective being to reduce the onboard energy consumption and increase the renewable part of the onboard energy production. The extensive use of large shaded exterior spaces reflects our vision of enjoying life at sea and the outdoors.”

Nuvolari Lenard

Domino by Nuvolari Lenard yacht design

Domino pays homage to the decades of experience that Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard have gathered along their award-winning careers at Nuvolari Lenard in Venice. An elegant simplicity is displayed the sweeping bow all the way to the graceful aft staircases that flank the swimming pool on the main deck. The curvaceous decks and glass bulwarks also give Domino a distinctive look.

Domino by Nuvolari Lenard

“We believe Domino represents the state of the art, in terms of beauty and functionality,” says Dan Lenard. “While also offering an owner a starting point from which to create a yacht that is perfectly suited to an owner.”

Aurai Simply Custom 80 meter by Bozca

Timur Bozca describes his design like this. “An embodiment of two worlds merging, Aurai is named after ‘nymphs of breezes’ in Greek mythology. Its exceptional exterior is influenced by the lines of a swordfish – an expression of strength – that is softened by the fluidity of natural forms, evoking a balance between power and grace.

“At every step, our focus has been on creating an experience that transcends the ordinary. Aurai doesn’t just navigate the waves, it dances with them; offering a symphony of luxury, innovation and connection to the sea.

Aurai by Bozca at night

“The visionary hull is divided into two halves, not only adding an element of intrigue but also elevating performance. The superstructure is elegantly sleek, marrying seamlessly with the hull for a harmonious and striking profile. Moving inward, the beach club serves as a testament to our commitment to immersive experiences. Every detail, from sand-like stairs to miniature gardens, captures the essence of a coastal haven. Dynamic structural elements pay homage to the ever-changing contours of the shoreline, inviting a sense of movement even when anchored.”

Winch Design

Reverie by Winch Design for Oceanco's Simply Custom program

“Our duty as a designer is to bring purpose, inspiration and innovation in our solutions to clients’ dreams,” says Jim Dixon of Winch Design . “Gazing from our Thames-side studio, we see the beauty of a ‘slipper’ launch and the nature of the pebbled water’s edge, which came together as Reverie .

Reverie by Winch Design for Oceanco Simply Custom

“Simple references form lasting impressions and strong, pure concepts; this is the Winch approach.”

Superleggera 80m by Hot Lab for Oceanco Simply Custom

Superleggera 80, is the aptly named design from Italian design studio Hot Lab because its sexy and elegant lines are reminiscent of a 1960s automobile. While the architectural elements of glass, natural light and space provide a perfect connection between the interior and exterior of the yacht.

Superleggera 80m by Hot Lab for Oceanco Simply Custom program

“At Hot Lab, we understand that today’s clients place higher value on how a space connects them to such deeper emotions, rather than simply serving a practical function,” says Antonio Romano.“ This is seen in the colossal 5m height of the Superleggera 80’s main deck atrium and the clean, sweeping lines of the yacht’s aft as the floor flows past the infinity-effect pool and glazed bulwark to the swim platform beneath in one uninterrupted curve.”

“Custom building is a core part of our DNA,” says Oceanco CEO Marcel Onkenhout. “We will always create yachts that are uniquely tailored to each owner. And we see Simply Custom as a logical development for Oceanco, sitting alongside our fully custom yachts and Life Cycle Support refit service, which will always be a part of our offering. The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive, and we have experienced a definite appetite for this new way of buying an Oceanco in an approachable, fun and streamlined way,”

Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
