Kirie Elite 30S

  • Add to quote

What can anyone tell me about these boats. They are extemely light, are they well built?

paulk

I have always been impressed with Kirie as being better put together than Beneteau and engineered more solidly. The parts tend to stay attached to each other and not flex as much. The gelcoat, even in older boats, tends to look good and to hold up well. The Elite 30 is VERY light. She feels like a dinghy when you step aboard, and will obviously be sensitive to weight placement, whether cruising or racing. Though I haven''t been out sailing on one, there is enough sail area to move her along, and the spars, look like they''re well thought out and sized appropirately. Below, the aft quarter cabin and head are snug fits, but this is a 30'' boat, not 40''. The galley and nav table have what''s needed, and though the cabinetry is light, it isn''t flimsy. The open, "U shaped" saloon is quite comfortable. Check the V-berth to make sure it''s big enough for whoever plans to sleep there. Since they''re less well-known than Beneteau (though I believe Beneteau now owns Kirie), they can be a good bargain for a nice boat.

do you know if the boat was originally a tiller or did it have a wheel option?

Jeff_H

I believe that the Elite 30''s could be purchased either way. The one I sailed on had a wheel. Jeff

Hello, we are in the process of purchasing an Elite 30 and can't wait to get her moved to our lake!! Dec. 16 weather permitting. We are very happy w/ our choice and excited to sail her.

MARC2012

Gee never heard of these & two in one day.Welcome.marc

Hello Marc, Seems I drummed up a very old thread on here.haha I joined the community here hoping to find some fellow Kirie owners and make some new online friends! Hard to find info on our Elite 30. I was able to find a manual download for the Volvo Penta 9hp motor, but would love to know more about the rest of the boat as well. Guess it might be time to contact Bennateau and see what they have laying around from the buyout!

Hadn't realized old thread. You might try on cruisers forum, one member"GORD MAY"(sp?) ,is able to find almost anything.Good luck.marc

Sanduskysailor

I've sailed more than a few races on an Elite 30s. Boat was a good performer but with some caveats. Boat I sailed and drove had a tiller. Cockpit was incredibly small when tacking since you needed to have the main trimmer in cockpit to manage the main and traveler located on the bridge deck. Harken windward sheeting car helped but the headsail trimmer and main trimmer would collide on tacks. Boat is a bit under ballasted. It will perform well with 6 crew which are required to hold the boat down when winds are over 12 knots and flying a 155%. The KE 30 has flat under body sections and will pound in steep chop. Since you will be sailing in Oklahoma (Thunderbird?) a lot of these issues won't matter. Boat is pretty good in light air. I would imagine steep chop is probably not much of a problem in Oklahoma. Interior holds up pretty well. Watch out for alignment problems on drive shaft which were an ongoing problem on my friends boat. Unfortunately he passed a couple of years ago and I have lost track of the boat. Oh yeah, one thing I forgot. Boat will auto tack in gusts and roundup easily on spinnaker reaches. If you feel a significant gust coming on rapidly pump the tiller a couple of times to keep flow attached on the rudder to maintain control. Go Sooners, beat the "pokes" in Bedlam tonight.

There is a yahoo group but looks out of date.marc

Thanks Sandusky, We are very happy w/ the boat. Delivery is on the 16th of Decemeber, brrr. We will be primarily cruising for pleasure and maybe the occasional race down the lake. We will be on Grand, which can produce some chop w/ the cigarette boats, but there are areas of the lake that are better to sail and they don't go there. We are relatively new to sailing, have two good friends that grew up doing so to guide us on our way. We have a family of four and will use her mostly for entertaining. We can't wait. She is in excellent condition other than paint and rigging. Have my paint and new ropes all picked out. Just waiting to measure old lines for keeping costs accurate. The interior is gorgeous and only needs new cushion covers and curtains to fit our tastes. Sailed over the years and have a good handle on it so far. Have been watching lessons on reefing and the use of the particular sails.

Try this one: eliteowners : Kirie Elite Owners Group I have a 1986 Kirie Elite 346. Sometimes I think mine's the only one around!

Hey thanks Sailor25b, Most of the people we talk to go a what, Kirie? We found ours shopping around online and fell for the roomy cabin and light air sailing. We can have some powerful winds around here but one can always sail w/ a reefed main and still enjoy the day!!

Sailor25b, I also find that like the Vivacity line made in England, there are few Kiries here in the states. We found three 30's for sale and chose this one for various reasons, mostly that she had been a freshwater boat and the other two were lifelong in the saltwater.

In the US, they were called "Elite," but in France, they were called "Feeling." Mine is an Elite 346 (or a Feeling 1040). The company was bought years ago by Alliaura Marine, but I don't think you'll get much support from them today for your boat. Get used to fixing things and replacing parts with substitutes (usually hard-to-find metric sizes). My 346 is a great cruiser/racer, and I give Beneteau First 36.7s a scare in local regattas (with time). My PHRF is 126 - not bad for a 34' Mainly, though, I sail all over and around Long Island - what a blast! Enjoy your unique sailboat. Get used to answering the question, "What boat is that?"

I did find info about the different names, but had assumed they were just different lines. I had read that Beneteau purchased Kirie in several places, so I emailed them and asked about info. I got a very snide reply email back from them. Even if I get rich and can afford one, over such a rude remark, I would not buy one. And you go beat that Beneteau next summer!!! You know the Elite 30 prototype won the '83 International 1/2 ton Cup!?!? There is a great yahoo group that has replaced the one mentioned above by Marc, I will post the link below. They have some resources for most models and around 90 members I guess. I have already found the needed manual pages for elec., fluid system, rigging, and sail dimensions. Seem to be a helpful group of gentlemen over there!! Getting our p's and q's in place while we await the moving date for ours. Enjoying all kinds of extra unknown costs and such of buying a sailboat.haha Can't wait to get her on a run!!! eliteowners : Kirie Elite Owners Group

ok, Sailor, forgot you linked the new group, tried to edit the above and it wouldn't so, yes, it was a momentary lapse of reason.

Sailor, Alliaura has full Kirie manuals available. Took less than 12 hours to have it in my email. try [email protected] !

ceol

i am a member of the Kirie yahoo group. we are not super active, but there are enough Kirie's out there that you will get a few emails a month. i have a 29CB. pretty much the same boat except for the rig and shorter transom. the 30's came in both an S and a R version. the R having a fractional rig. i have posted a lot of documentation about the 29 and some 30 stuff from my boat purchase up on the Yahoo group. i really enjoy the boat. fits perfectly for family cruising. i have added a bow sprit for asymmetrical kite flying. mine has the wheel, but i am sure mine was added later. i have done just very light racing with it. my kids really enjoy the v-berth. if you are looking for more info, then searching for the Feeling 850, 960, 286 should get you a few more hits. it seems nobody can figure out exactly what size they have, so broadcast netting may be your best bet. in the cockpit you should have a metal build plate, what does yours say? mine says Feeling 850. this plate should give you the hull form, more info for searching. G~

Since found out she's the 30R. Brought her up from Arkansas last Tuesday and have her on the trailer looking for a place to paint inside. Now that's a challenge. Still trying to figure out where the swim deck came from. Maybe that too is a 30R feature, open transom.

The Elite 30s is a 31.0ft masthead sloop designed by Philippe Briand and built in fiberglass by Alliaura marine (Kirie) since 1984.

The Elite 30s is a light sailboat which is a good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a day-boat. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a very short water supply range.

Review of Elite 30S

Basic specs..

The Elite 30S is equipped with a finn keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.71 - 1.81 meter (5.61 - 5.91 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with a Volvo Penta diesel engine.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Elite 30S is 2.36, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Elite 30S is about 165 kg/cm, alternatively 924 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 165 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 924 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 28m 2 (301 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Worthy of what? Racing, coastal cruising, crossing oceans? What is your intended use?

Helpful

You have the C&C 30 but not the 27. You don't indicate which Mk# of the 30 either, there is a significant difference between the Mk I and Mk II. The Mk II is a much more modern boat. The MK I is a scaled up version of the C&C 27 Mk I - IV. By most counts the C&C 27 Mk I through IV is a better boat than the C&C 30 Mk I. The 27 Mk V is a different boat. I owned a C&C 27 Mk II for almost 20 years, cruising and racing. It was a fantastic blend of performance and comfort in a 1970s 27 footer. There is a very good reason close to 1000 boats were produced - the boat sails very well (even compared to today's similar sized cruiser/racers) and is comfortable for a family of 4 for an extended weekend cruise. If you are looking at the C&C 27 see if you can find a Mk III or Mk IV, they added a couple of feet to the mast and stretched the water line out which improved performance with no negative impacts. The nicest boat under 30' I have been on was a Mirage 29. What a great layout and decent sailing. If you are looking for a good performing, comfortable cruising boat under 30', the Mirage 29 should be at the top of the list to check out. The Pearson 30 Flyer is a very different beast. If you want the best bang for the buck in performance this would be a good choice, but not a comfortable cruising boat. You have an extremely diverse set of boats in that list. Comparing a Frers 30 to a Morgan Out Island 28 would be ridiculous. Narrowing down you criteria before going any further would be a good idea. Sailboatdata.com has a refine search feature where you could play with values like SA/D and Disp/Length. If you want stability look for a low Capsize Ratio (under 2), if you want more performance look for higher SA/D.

FastOlson

Club racing? Cruising? Day sailing? Trailer or no trailer? Budget?? 30' waterline length or overall length? Year?

@DArcy Thanks for the tips on the different revisions of the C&C boats! This is exactly the insight I was hoping for! @FastOlson I'm shocked that I missed all of the Ericsons! I'll definitely check out the Olson Budget is 30k, preferably closer to 20k. Slip costs double if I go over 30' LOA, otherwise I'd be buying something bigger in a heartbeat. The main reason for the upgrade is comfort in heavier waves. Anything over 2-2.5' and less than 3 seconds apart is uncomfortable in an O'Day 25. It's also pretty slow, especially when it's dragging two props in the water (one of many items to fix on the to-do list). It would be used as a daysailor with occasional over nighting. I love heavy weather sailing. Enclosed head is a must. Trailer is nice but not essential. Inboard is nearly essential. I'd lean more towards gas as I'm more familiar with them but I'm open to diesel. With that said I have sailed on an Apache 37 and it was a dream. The waves were as high as our heads and we were sitting around chatting like the water was flat. It was also much faster than my O'Day. The Atomic 30 was incredibly quiet. I also did a sea trial of a Catalina 30 TRBS. It was much more comfortable than the O'Day. It sailed nicely and the interior is fantastic. I've been compiling specs based on the listings on Sailboat Guide — Discover your dream boat . I'm trying to familiarize myself with the specs and what they mean. How much emphasis should I put on their "comfort ratio"? I'm guessing hull speed, SA/Displacement I'm guessing aren't the only specs related to performance. How is it that a boat with a longer longer waterline (and more wetted surface) has better performance?

Obsessiion

The Mariner 28 was well built and pretty comfortable.

shemandr

It's an interesting list for a couple of reasons. Foremost to me is that there is hardly a boat on it that is still in production. Has the industry abandoned the 30' performance cruiser market? You can find 30' sport boats but I'm having trouble thinking of a performance cruiser. You would be hard pressed to find a way to spend 30 K on many of those. If the OP wants inward power he should probably budget for a re-power right off the bat for many of the boats of that vintage. The best boat I ever went out bashing waves in is the C&C 27 Mark 1(Although I'm not sure it was called the Mark 1). The owner and I went out on a crappy day in our foulies, a more than adequate supply of beer, and slammed into waves for hours longer than made any sense. The boat didn't mind a bit. And it was fun.

Scott T-Bird

Scott T-Bird

If your boat is for heavy weather on Lake Michigan, I would eliminate all boats on your list under 30' unless they are full keel and comfort factor over 20. If you like performance and single-handing, then expand the list and eliminate the ones that are built more for comfort. Your list seems to be indiscriminate and scattered across a broad range of priorities. I'll suggest that you should not dismiss Starwind 27 (masthead rig) or Precision 27 or 28 (fractional rigs). These boats have a very good design pedigree and I would choose them over many of the similar-sized boats on your list. But reality dictates that you will be limited to the models that are conveniently located for sale and, of course, condition, condition, condition usually dictates the best purchase opportunities.

I'm biased, but you could add the Yamaha 30 to your list. They're not common, but owners love them.

Asking which boats should be in a "best under 30'" list is just one step away from the dreaded "should I varnish or let the teak go natural?" thread!

Alan Gomes said: Pretty much all the boats we are talking about here were "built to a price." My Ericson, which for whatever reason has a reputation as being a cut above other boats build in the 70's and 80's, most certainly was. This becomes evident when you start tearing into it to retrofit and/or correct some of the cost-savings measures done by the builders. While it's true that some brands were worse than others--and often this varied by model year, depending upon what was happening at the company at the time--we shouldn't kid ourselves about this. Elite 30S is a 31 ′ 0 ″ / 9.5 m monohull sailboat designed by Philippe Briand and built by Kirie starting in 1984.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A version with a fractional rig is called the ELITE 30R. The ELITE 29, 30, FEELING 850 have common origins.
