Mercedes-AMG G63 Yachting Limited Edition Offers Insane Decadence

Carlex Design has wowed us yet again.

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG G63 is a bit of an enigma in the auto industry. While it began as a stripped out, military off-roader, the G Wagon somehow morphed into a status symbol amongst the Hollywood elite and professional athletes. In AMG form, the G-Class produces 577 horsepower from a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, yielding a 0-60 mph time of around 4.5 seconds. With a starting price of $156,450 combined with a lengthy waiting list, only important people get to drive a G63.

But if you do manage to nab a G63 and want yours to stand out, aftermarket tuner Carlex Design is now offering a new limited edition model called the G Yachting. This is not the first G-Class to be based on a boat, as Mercedes itself previously released the G63 Cigarette Edition with a matching Tirranna AMG Edition speedboat . But in our opinion, the Carlex Design G-Class is even more opulent.

Unlike some other tuners, Carlex has decided not to mess with the G-Wagen's rugged looks. Instead, the tuner has focused on offering lower body paint schemes (polar white or brushed silver) with an upper-body painted in satin black. Either of these two colors is then paired with the most unique styling feature, a brushed metal roof, which matches the 22-inch brushed alloy wheels.

Inside, the Mercedes G Yachting Limited Edition is offered with a choice of two interior colors. Buyers can choose between off-white leather with Alcantara or cognac leather with light accents. If we were able to choose between the two, we'd opt for the off-white for its sheer decadence.

The colors aren't the only elements Carlex has changed on the interior. The headliner, for instance, has been decorated with a glossy flower of the winds embroidery coupled with streaking lines across the cabin. Carlex has also wrapped the steering wheel with top quality leather and added wood covers, which match the wooden floor and link to the car's yachting inspiration. When you drive up to the yacht club in this G-Wagen, people will take notice.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen is already a display of wealth and excess, and its souped-up sibling, the 577-horsepower Mercedes-AMG G63, is completely over the top.

But one company evidently didn't think the G63 AMG was excessive enough, so it and mashed the boxy Merc up with a yacht to create one of the wildest G-Wagens on the market today. 

The company, Carlex Design — which blings out car, plane, and boat interiors — has released detailed renderings of its latest project: an upgraded G-Wagen designed for yachting enthusiasts.

First brought to our attention by Autoblog , the G-Yachting Limited Edition — whose name gets right to the point — features nautical-themed accents that boat fanatics who can afford it are sure to love, like a wood-trimmed steering wheel, an embroidered compass design on the headliner, and wood decking throughout. 

It comes in two exterior and two interior color options, and is available to custom order now.

Customization company Carlex Design — which tricks out plane, car, and boat interiors — built a Mercedes G-Wagen specifically for yachting enthusiasts.

Meet the G-Yachting Limited Edition — a thoroughly blinged out, nautically themed SUV based on the latest-generation Mercedes-AMG G63.

The $156,450 G63 is already over the top, sporting a massive, twin-turbocharged V8 that puts out 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.

But the folks at Carlex have found a way to take the G63 up a notch.

The main event is inside of the SUV, where there's wood decking like you might find on a yacht.

The interior comes in a dark and a light theme, and both feature an intricate compass design on the headliner.

Carlex says the SUV was created for "enthusiasts of luxury and marine style."

The interior has been decked out in leather and Alcantara ...

... and the steering wheel features leather and wood trim.

There's even wood paneling on the floors to complete the feeling of being on a boat.

On the outside, Carlex preserved the overall look and shape of the G-Wagen, but added some yacht-inspired touches — mostly in the form of the word "Yachting" etched into the car.

The spare-wheel cover has a compass etched into it to match the interior.

But Carlex's latest G-Wagen creation isn't its first foray into marine-themed automobiles. The company also sells a similar styling package for the Mercedes X-Class pickup, which was never sold in the US.

The X-Class Yachting package, as expected, includes teak decking in the bed ...

... and even on the tailgate.

There's also wood paneling in the passenger foot wells.

The interior features plenty of leather and faux-suede covering the seats, gear shifter, center armrest, and door panels.

And the steering wheel has been reshaped and trimmed in even more wood.

The package also includes some snazzy exterior upgrades like wheels off a Maybach.

The X-Class Yachting package will run you roughly $72,000, not including the price of the pickup. There's no word yet on pricing for the G-Yachting Limited Edition, but it likely won't come cheap either.

This Polish aftermarket company gives the G63 a nautical twist for the sea lover in you

The Mercedes-AMG G63 is a popular SUV among enthusiasts and aftermarket companies alike. This time, Carlex Design Europe has laid its hands on the boxy beauty and gave it a special treatment.

Called the Yachting Limited Edition, this design is a “marine version of the iconic Mercedes G63 AMG” as Carlex puts it. The company has made a few tweaks to the exterior, but most of the changes come inside the cabin. With all the light-shade leather and wood trim on the interior, it looks pretty neat, doesn’t it?

What’s Different On The Outside?

The Carlex G63 Yachting Limited Edition is painted in a dual-tone shade. The upper half features a satin black color, whereas the lower can be had in either polar white or brushed silver. Up front, the star logo is swapped with Carlex’s logo on the grille. 'CARLEX' lettering is also present at the tip of the hood. The headlights and bumpers are retained.

The side profile features a black strip running from the fenders to the end of the vehicle. The G63 Yachting Edition rides on 22-inch brushed wheels wrapped in low profile tires. In the rear, things are the same except for a custom wheel cover. The design gives a strong nautical vibe to this marine-themed SUV and it looks pretty good.

The Interior Lives Up To The Nautical Theme

The first one comprises of off-white leather with Alcantara, whereas the second version makes use of cognac leather with light accents .

The seats come with shoulder pads finished in a metallic shade along with heavy bolstering on the sides. There are a lot of wood decor elements around the cabin. They're present on the door panels, steering wheel, grab handles, as well as the floor. The same treatment is given to the cargo area as well.

What Powers The Carlex G63 Yachting Edition?

Carlex has not made any changes to the G63’s drivetrain. In standard form, the Mercedes-AMG G63 comes with a 4.0-liter, biturbo V-8 engine under the hood that churns out 577 horses and 627 pound-feet of torque . The engine is mated a nine-speed AMG Speedshift 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. Power is sent to all the wheels via a two-speed transfer case.

Final Thoughts

Carlex Design had released renderings of the Mercedes-AMG G63 Yachting Edition earlier this year, but the actual photos have come out now. These are images of the first finished vehicle designed for the company’s customer in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The company hasn’t released the prices of the same, but we are expecting it to cost around $50,000 over the cost of the donor vehicle. The 2020 Mercedes-AMG G63 starts at $156,450 in the States, so the Carlex Yachting Edition should cost you north of $200,000 .

Few aftermarket firms do interiors quite like Carlex Design and three years ago , it unveiled a special variant of the Mercedes-AMG G63 it dubbed the Yachting Limited Edition. It has built a handful of these models since and one of them is up for sale.

This Mercedes -AMG G63 is a 2023 model and looks particularly nice thanks to the Navy Blue exterior paint. As part of the Yachting Limited Edition package, Carlex has applied white graphics to the sides of the SUV as well as some silver touches to both the front and rear fascias. It has also equipped it with a new set of wheels, although these are sold separately. The original Mercedes-Benz badges have also been ditched in favor of Carlex’s own design and there is also a unique spare wheel cover with a silver finish.

The cabin of the G63 is where most of the action is happening. Carlex has trimmed the front and rear seats in its finest white leather while also adorning the door panels in the same plush material. The steering wheel also features the same white leather. Complementing the leather is white Alcantara on the pillars, headliner, and throughout much of the trunk, including the roof door.

In case you were wondering, the Yachting Limited Edition gets its name from the various pieces of wood paneling applied throughout, just like the finest yachts. These wooden elements can be found in place of regular floor mats, on the steering wheel, the passenger-side dashboard grab handle, the backside of the second-row seats, and on the floor of the trunk. It’s all rather lovely.

Mind you, buying a Mercedes-AMG G63 from Carlex Design isn’t cheap. In fact, this one has an asking price of €329,000 (~$362,000).

Luckily, one custom design shop realized how much the world's most preeminent yachting fans must be suffering and has teamed up with Mercedes and AMG to reveal a custom G-Wagen that redefines opulence and luxury. A recent press release from Mercedes-Benz Italy reveals Carlex Design's G63 Yachting Limited Edition, which comes complete with a fully restyled interior featuring wood paneling and miles of premium hides.

The Boat Is Out Of The Water

Photos of the Carlex Design G-Wagen look just about as opulent as a long afternoon spent enjoying oysters in flowing Egyptian cotton. From wood paneling evocative of a foredeck, plus nautical details like a compass logo on the wooden roof. Faux rivets—or are they real?—only enhance the overall vibe of excess and luxury.

Cruising In Comfort

No mention is made of a price tag for this level of customization, nor is there any discussion of engine modifications or enhancements. The exterior does look to differentiate itself from more pedestrian G63 models, which start at $156,450 and go up mightily from there without aftermarket trim packages, with a two-tone color scheme, plenty of Carlex badging, and what looks to be custom wheels.

A Suite Of Choices

Another set of interior images reveals an alternative to the deeper wood tones of traditional yachting slats. This version is lighter, with silver and grey on the seats, roof, and dashboard. These photos don't show it, but even the classic spare tire cover hanging off the rear of the Carlex G-Wagen features the compass design—as if anyone buying this SUV would ever deign to change their own flat tire themselves.

AMG Night Package

Darkened elements add striking contrast, including the headlamps, front turn signals and taillamps. The bumper accents, front underguard and side mirrors are all finished in Obsidian Black metallic paint. The grille is finished in gunmetal grey.

The bumper accents, front brush guard and body-side protective strips are all finished in matte black. The side mirrors are finished in black as well. The grille is finished in gunmetal grey.

The Night Package Magno extends its matte black theme further by painting the fender flares and the front and rear bumpers in matte black, to match numerous other elements in the package.

Blackened Star emblems in the grille and on the rear-mounted spare tire further the "de-chroming" of the G-Class.

The model badge on the rear of the vehicle and the V8 emblem on each front fender are all finished in black instead of the traditional chrome.

The low-profile AMG front brush guard is available in a modern matte black finish to complement the available AMG Night Package Magno.

A spare tire surround finished in matte black paint complements the available matte-finish black accents of the Night Package Magno.

The rugged front underguard is finished in matte black. It's available as part of the AMG Night Package Magno, or as a no-charge alternative to the gloss black underguard in the AMG Trail Package.

Seat Comfort Package

Pneumatically adjustable lumbar, side and shoulder supports offer custom-tailored comfort. Active side bolsters can automatically increase lateral support in cornering maneuvers, or even in the event of a potential accident. Eight massage programs can soothe and rejuvenate your back and shoulders, including two spa-like "hot stone" massages, plus two "active workout" programs to help strengthen your back and leg muscles.

An added enhancement to the available heated front seats, this rapid-warming feature quickly replaces the chill of a cold day or evening with nearly instant heating of the seat. The feature automatically switches to the normal heating settings as soon as the desired temperature is reached.

Heated and ventilated seats are a luxury you'll soon consider a necessity. Three levels of heating and cooling ventilation are offered. By gently circulating air through perforations in the seat and backrest, ventilated seats help keep you cooler and your clothes drier during warmer months. Reversible fans help draw heat away for brief periods. On cold or damp days, using both the ventilation and heating together can circulate the seat heating more quickly, to help keep you warm and dry.

ENERGIZING Comfort coordinates climate control, ambient lighting, audio, cabin fragrance, plus front seat massage, heating and ventilation. Up to five 10-minute programs such as Refresh, Vitality or Enjoyment, plus three Training programs, accompany physical comforts with harmonious cabin lighting and music. Five music tracks are included, or it can select music from your own connected device by analyzing its tempo.

Supple, smooth-grained Nappa leather is hand-fitted to the seats and head restraints, the lower dash, the doors, armrests, and the cargo door trim. The upper dash and console are elegantly trimmed in contrasting black Nappa leather.

Exquisitely crafted Nappa leather upholstery is hand-fitted to the seat inserts, door inserts, console side trim, and cargo door trim. It's offered in Black with contrasting topstitching in a range of colors, as well as a wide choice of color schemes in single-tone and two-tone motifs or with contrasting leather in the "A-band" detail of each seat. It's also available with diamond-pattern stitching on the seat and door inserts, console sides and cargo door.

What's New for 2022?

For 2022, Mercedes-Benz doesn’t make any significant changes to the G-class. The G550 is still equipped with a 416-hp twin-turbo V-8 that pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-class starts at $140,950.

Every G-class commands a six-figure price, and the number can get a lot higher with the wide array of expensive options. We’d avoid the priciest upgrades and enhance our version with thoughtful choices. These include the Exclusive Interior package that adds the nicer nappa leather upholstery and snazzier trim pieces. The Seat Comfort package includes massaging front seats with ventilated cushions, and the available adaptive dampers allow adjustable ride quality. The only other option we’d choose is the heated steering wheel.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Powered by a twin-turbo V-8 that makes 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, the G550 is as quick on the street as it is capable on the trail. All-wheel drive is standard on the G550, and its engine shuttles power through an obedient nine-speed automatic transmission. The 2019 G550 that we tested had much-improved road manners compared with the outgoing model, thanks to an independent front suspension and a lower center of gravity. However, its square and tall body caused a lot of wind noise at higher speeds, and it sure doesn’t help the SUV feel swift around corners. Still, the G550’s steering feels more precise than ever and the ride quality is composed on all but the choppiest surfaces. Mercedes also equips each G-class with three locking differentials and a low-range gear, which means it can tackle just about any terrain. That along with generous ground clearance and a maximum towing capacity of 7000 pounds make it a useful tool when it’s not shuttling socialites.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Those who can afford to own a G550 should have deep enough pockets to cover its propensity to swill gasoline. The EPA expects every model to earn 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. We tested one on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route—part of our extensive testing regimen —and found that it failed to meet government expectations, earning 15 mpg in the real world. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Adding to the G-class’s off-road chops, the interior is all about luxury and offers more space for people and cargo than the previous generation. Standard features include a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster, heated front and rear seats with leather upholstery, a power-adjustable steering column, and three-zone automatic climate control. With the check of a few option boxes, buyers can enjoy massaging front seats with ventilation, a heated steering wheel, nappa leather upholstery, and a digital gauge display. The G manufaktur options offer the most opulent aesthetic and allow more than 54 unique interior upholsteries, but they cost a considerable amount of money. While there’s no shortage of headroom in the front or rear seats, the experience isn’t as palatial as other high-end SUVs such as the Bentley Bentayga or Rolls-Royce Cullinan . Still, the Benz has tons of cargo space. The version we tested held 16 carry-on suitcases behind its back row and another 17 bags with those seats folded (33 total).

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every G-wagen features a large 12.3-inch infotainment display that is primarily controlled through a rotary knob and touchpad mounted on the center console. Along with useful steering-wheel controls and voice commands, the system is easy to operate and less distracting than touch-heavy alternatives. It also comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 15-speaker, 590-watt Burmester audio system. Those looking for further upgrades can add a Wi-Fi hotspot or a rear-seat entertainment system.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The G-class has a slew of standard driver-assistance technology such as blind-spot monitoring and self-parking assist. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class ‘Stronger than Diamonds’ Edition Comes with Real Diamonds

The G-Wagon (or G-Wagen if you’re not American) is one of the most iconic SUVs of all time and continues to be a symbol of luxury . In June of last year, we saw a special black and gold edition of the 2024 AMG G63 Grand Edition , but it’s the season of Cupid now, and Mercedes is feeling festive. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Mercedes is giving the G-Wagon some extra love with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class “Stronger Than Diamonds” Edition, a pink take on the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G 550 featuring real-deal diamonds. 

This special edition ride is based on the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G 550, and comes clad in a MANUFAKTUR Rosewood Grey Magno paint that was developed just for this edition. As the name suggests, you’re actually getting some real diamonds here – each of the four stainless steel door locking pins houses a 0.25-carat diamond, and the exterior door handles have an embossed diamond logo to celebrate the release. Inside, there’s a black Nappa leather interior with rosé contrast stitching and deep-pile floor mats (all from MANUFAKTUR). You also get some stainless steel “Stronger Than Diamonds” branding on the front passenger grab handle and the illuminated door sills. 

Other notable features include the custom indoor car cover (with an exclusive “Stronger Than Diamonds” design), and each model comes with a certificate from the Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC), meaning that the diamonds were ethically sourced. Finishing it off, you get a fob with a genuine silver badge and a diamond insignia. 

Only 300 models of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class “Stronger Than Diamonds” Edition will be available for purchase worldwide starting today (Valentine’s Day), and while pricing hasn’t been revealed just yet, expect it to cost more than the base G-Wagon (which has an MSRP of around $143,000 at the moment).

2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Preview: Same-old looks, new tech inside and under-hood

Much-needed updates come to the gas-powered g even as the electric version arrives.

Ahead of the launch of the refreshed Mercedes-Benz G-Class , all the talk has been on the new all-electric version. And why not? When you have a giant, three-ton brute that can quite dramatically spin on its own axis , it makes sense that it'd get a lot of attention.

But Mercedes isn't just electrifying the new G. The internal combustion-powered SUV is getting a refresh, too, and today we can share all the details.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class will still ride on a ladder frame, still have three locking differentials, still offer 9.5 inches of ground clearance, and can still successfully wade through 27.6 inches of water. In other words, it's every bit the off-road monster as the current version.

The advancements this year focus more on on-road performance, interior refinement and bringing interior technology up to the date with the rest of the Mercedes family (it’s multiple-generations-behind tech had been impossible to miss ). To that end, the interior sees a substantial reboot, which starts before you even get inside. The G-Class finally gains proximity entry, though the doors still unlock with the G’s famously intense clunk. Once inside, you’ll see the 2025 G carries forward some styling cues from the previous version but with its widescreen display now running the latest MBUX infotainment software/UI with a control combination of touchscreen and redundant center console touchpad. Last year’s G still had old-school COMAND, which was solely controlled by the strange redundant combo of rotary knob and glossy touch pod contraption. The all-digital instrument panel has also been brought up to date, while a new Offroad Cockpit view takes advantage of the 360-degree camera system to provide an ”invisible hood” effect.

Other standard equipment additions include wireless phone charging, climate controlled cupholders and lane-centering steering assist for the adaptive cruise control system, while the options list gains a dual-screen rear entertainment system and Burmester sound system option with Dolby Atmos .

Although the big powertrain news will obviously be the all-electric version, the G 550 gets an all-new engine for 2025. Replacing the 4.0-liter V8 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a mild-hybrid system. Found elsewhere in the Mercedes lineup, the G’s version produces 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, representing an increase of 27 hp over the previous G 550 but a decrease of 37 fewer pound-feet.

The AMG G 63 , pictured above, also adds 48-volt mild-hybrid tech to its hand-built 4.0-liter V8, but it produces the same 577 hp and 627 lb-ft as before, and still hits 60 in 4.5 seconds.That can drop to 4.2 seconds with the new AMG Performance Pack, though. It also raises the top speed to 150 mph and includes launch control, something you absolutely need in an SUV this size. Also optional on the AMG G 63 is AMG Active Ride Control, Mercedes' hydraulic, anti-rollbar-free suspension system, first seen on the AMG SL 63 . This promises improved on-road manners, but it’s also similar to the technology that contributes to the Rivian R1S being such a uniquely capable vehicle off-road.

Should that sound appealing, there's also the new AMG Offroad Package Pro, which includes two new off-road-focused drive modes (AMG Traction Pro and customizable AMG Active Balance Control), smaller 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires , Professional Line spare wheel holder (it can swing out separately from the swing gate) and the Professional Roof Rack with cheeky little ladder hanging off the rear. Basically, it’s the G 550’s Professional Edition applied to the G 63 with the running boards in place. And speaking of the Professional, its wood cargo floor would seem to now be available as an option on the standard G 550.

Outside, it may not seem like there’s any difference, but the numbers tell a different story. The drag co-efficient has fallen to 0.48 from 0.55, the result of multiple aerodynamic tweaks including resculpted A pillars. Visual changes for the G 550 include the four horizontal louvers in the grille and a enlarged lower bumper inlets with new inserts.

Mercedes hasn't yet announced pricing on any of these new packages, but just to set expectations, the current G 550 starts at $143,000, while life with a G 63 begins at $179,000 -- plus a few extra bags of cash to appease your greedy local dealership . With the tech and capability upgrades here, don't expect the new one to get any more affordable.

The G-Wagen has carried Mercedes-Benz's off-road torch for the past 45 years. And the boxy SUV hasn't changed much in nearly half a century. But for 2024, Mercedes is finally electrifying its iconic off-roader— mildly —ahead of the upcoming EQG EV later this year.

The base G550 ditches its V-8 for a new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with mild-hybrid assist via an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor. That gives the base G-Class 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, with the integrated starter generator alone delivering 20 hp and 148 lb-ft. That's 27 more total hp than the previous model, but a bit less torque.

An updated nine-speed automatic with a torque converter yields wider gear ratios overall, while all-wheel drive with a 40-60 torque split comes standard. And even with the smaller-displacement engine, the G550 still has excellent off-road prowess. Three mechanical differential locks pair with a transfer case that offers low-range off-road gearing. The same 9.5 inches of ground clearance sits remains, as does the truck's 30- and 31-degree approach and departure angles, respectively.

Mercedes baked an Off-Road Cockpit function into the MBUX infotainment system to aid off-roading. The Off-Road Cockpit displays items like vehicle positioning, altitude, steering angle, and temperature on the 12.3-inch touchscreen and corresponding digital instrument cluster, allowing users to customize the display as they see fit. The “Transparent Hood” function borrowed from the EQE and GLC also carries over, allowing the driver to see “through” the front end of the car using the 360-degree overhead camera.

There's a bevy of other technologies available on the G-Class, including a suite of safety equipment as part of the standard Driver Assistance package. That includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and more. The Parking package also comes with a 360-degree overhead camera. Buyers can add on things like adaptive steering assist, active emergency stopping, and route-based speed assist.

While the base G550 downsizes its engine, the performance-oriented G63 goes unchanged. The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 carries over, with 577 hp and 627 lb-ft, and the same 48-volt mild-hybrid assist as the base model. That's enough power to launch the G63 to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds.

AMG Active Ride Control is a new option on the G63, and it adds hydraulic roll stabilization and adjustable adaptive damping for better on- and off-road performance. You can get it as part of the AMG Offroad Package Pro.

Both the base G550 and G63 get subtle visual upgrades for 2025. The G63 specifically comes with a new Manufaktur Hyper Blue Magno paint option, standard adaptive LED headlights, and a refreshed bumper design. You can also pick from six different wheel options ranging from 20 to 22 inches.

One thing Mercedes doesn’t divulge is how much the new-and-improved G-Class costs. The 2024 model starts at $144,150 with destination and the G63 is $180,950. Expect the 2025 model to be slightly pricier in both respects.
