How Much Do Yacht Club Memberships Cost? (5 Helpful Examples)

' src=

Joining a yacht club is an important milestone in your life. It marks a certain degree of success and allows you to enjoy plenty of luxurious amenities. Setting sail on a yacht is the ultimate way to unwind from a hectic work week while you try to climb the corporate ladder.

Fortunately, there are yacht clubs all over the country that would love to welcome you as a brand-new member. You can enjoy an afternoon on the water with a beautiful yacht in exchange for a small sum of money.

But how much do Yacht Club memberships generally cost?

Prices for Yacht Clubs will vary based on your location, the fleet, and even the amenities that are offered at the marina. The average annual membership price is between $900-$4,000 depending on your level of luxury and needs.

To give you an idea of what you could expect to pay for your yacht club membership, here are some numbers gathered from across the country:

Table of Contents

What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

The cheapest yacht clubs charge just under $1,000 per year for membership. While this does give you access to different types of experiences, you may be disappointed by the overall amenities.

Some yacht clubs are known for their extravagant country club styles that help you to embrace a particular lifestyle. They include Olympic-sized swimming pools, state-of-the-art tennis courts, and fine dining.

Everything has a beautiful waterfront view. It can feel like you are in the middle of an idyllic paradise without ever even having to leave the shore. If this is what you can gain from the most expensive yacht clubs, you should set your expectations much lower for the cheaper yacht clubs.

The cheaper yacht clubs lack the community aspect of these exclusive options. They feature dry slips and the occasional party, but not much more.

Some of them may have the feel of a county park with some picnic benches, outdoor grills, and a moderately sized swimming pool. Expect a much more casual atmosphere when you choose to go with a cheaper yacht club.

It is even possible that they are simply “paper yacht clubs” that do not even maintain a physical building of their own.

How Much Do the Most Expensive Yacht Clubs Cost to Join?

The most expensive yacht clubs can vary a great deal in price. Most of them will cost between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. However, you can certainly find more exclusive clubs that will cost above and beyond this.

Keep in mind that these more expensive clubs generally are not open to the public. They are offered by invitation only and you must have a member sponsor you to be considered for entrance.

When you are paying for a more expensive yacht club, you should make sure that you are really going to get your money’s worth. These expensive clubs promote a certain type of elegant lifestyle.

Make sure that you are planning to take advantage of all the amenities available from one of these clubs before you sink too much money into the membership fees. The social aspect of these expensive yacht clubs is extremely important.

If you plan to simply rent a boat from time to time, you might be able to go with a cheaper yacht club.

What Is Generally Included in the Membership Fee for Yacht Clubs?

Have you been wondering why you should join a yacht club? Many potential members want to know what they can expect from their membership fees before they commit to a year-long contract. There are many advantages to signing up for a membership with a well-known yacht club.

Amenities and Activities

First and foremost, you get access to activities and cruises planned by board members. These might be various sailing activities, dinners, get-togethers, tennis matches, or other events that take up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

You also gain access to any amenities that surround the yacht club’s marina. For many programs, this means a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Several locations also offer fine dining, meeting rooms, and more.

It is like a private oasis where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Time moves slowly when you’re enjoying the amenities here.

Many yacht clubs have programs that introduce children (and adults!) to sailing. Take classes to learn more about improving your technique, sailing safety, and other important aspects of life on the open water.

Access to the Fleet

The main reason why most people join yacht clubs is to be able to rent out boats instead of purchasing their own. Joining a yacht club may give you access to an entire fleet of yachts that can be reserved for a day or weeks at a time. Some yacht clubs allow you to rent boats for up to ten days at a time.

Others do not allow you to rent out ships. They are primarily geared toward individuals who already own a yacht or will own a yacht in the future. Make sure you know the difference in advance.

halifax river yacht club membership cost per month

Are There any Additional Costs Besides the Membership Fees?

Unfortunately, the membership fees are not the only cost associated with joining a yacht club. Most of the clubs in the United States also have a one-time initial fee that tends to cost thousands of dollars. Many will range from $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the location and the exclusivity of the yacht club.

This one-time fee should be the only additional money you pay except for fuel. Most yacht clubs do not cover the cost of the fuel used in the ship during your rental if renting is an option. Be prepared for what this could cost you.

If you cause damage to the ship, you can also expect some out-of-pocket costs. Insurance should cover the damage, but you will likely be asked to cover the cost of the deductible.

Be sure to inquire about how much you may be on the hook for before you sign up for any particular yacht club. Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced sailors. Make sure that you can afford the mishap in advance.

Is a Yacht Club Membership Right for You?

Understanding what the real cost of a yacht club membership is can be the first step toward determining if this is right for you. Many people love the luxuries available through the more expensive yacht clubs, but they may not be able to afford it. Consider what is most important in a club to you before deciding to sign on the dotted line for an annual membership.

  • Ormond Beach Observer

The Halifax River Yacht Club is steeped in tradition — both old and new — and on May 15, members will celebrate its 125th anniversary.

The club is the oldest continuously operating yacht club on the East Coast that has kept its original location of 331 S. Beach St., having been founded in 1896 in Daytona Beach. From a champagne toast accompanied by a harpist, to dinner and jazz, the anniversary celebration will be the club's biggest event of the year.

After 2020's coronavirus impacts, being able to celebrate the club's anniversary made Commodore Terri Parsons say "Hallelujah."

“I’m just very, very proud to be a part of it — a tiny little snippet of it," Parsons said.

Parsons, a member since 2005, has been at the helm of the yacht club since Jan. 1, as commodores all serve one-year terms. She is the third female commodore since the club was founded, though Parsons said she doesn't pay that much mind. A big part of the anniversary celebration is paying tribute to all the commodores that pushed the club forward, in times of war, sickness and economic downturns.

All living commodores, including 2020's Commodore Chris Brown, will be lined up in the lobby on May 15 to greet members.

The yacht club is about growing leaders, said Kelly Wagner, past first lady and president of the Halifax River Yacht Club Commodore's Association Associates. Wagner, of Ormond Beach, said her role is to embrace and support new commodores, just like she and her husband Glenn were when he was commodore in 2016.

“It’s significant having a female leader during COVID times, and still has her passion for the club, it’s very touching," Wagner said.

125 years of history

The club's creation began on Jan. 8, 1896. A group of 13 sailing enthusiasts met, with Sumner H. Gove presiding as president. It was on that day that the men unanimously decided they would name their club the "Halifax River Yacht Club," and they elected their first commodore: Victor Vuillaume.

The Halifax River Yacht Club was founded in 1896. Courtesy photo

During that first year, members met across the street in a building owned by Laurence Thompson, who gave permission in March 1896 to construct a pier and connect it to the seawall in front of his property. The pier was completed later that year, and the first meeting in the new clubhouse was held on Feb. 10, 1897.

The club's membership continued to meet in that clubhouse, which gained new additions and was renovated over the 110-year period, until a new clubhouse was built in 2007 on the land that previously was the parking lot for the club. The original clubhouse was removed afterward and replaced with additional docks.

But, the club is more than just a building, as its history wall highlights.

First Commodore Victor Vuillaume. Courtesy photo

The majority of its original members lived and worked within a few blocks of the clubhouse, and by the turn of the century, club activities happened year-round. Members met for boating purposes of course, but also to socialize. They held banquets and balls in the Opera House across Beach Street, picnicked at Silver Beach and Ponce Inlet, and cruised the Tomoka River.

Membership increased after World War II in the late 1940s and 1950s, and a women's restroom was finally in 1959. While membership fluctuates every month, April having seen an increase of 10 members, Parsons said they do have 91 members just from Ormond Beach.

By 1901, the Halifax River Yacht Club had gained a sail loft and boat sheds. Courtesy photo

Some notable members of the early days include builder Charles Ballough, businessman Charles Burgoyne, Procter and Gamble co-founder James N. Gamble.

The club remains active in the community. Every year, it raises funds for charity through its annual Christmas boat parade and hosts toy drives. The Commadears, a group of women within the club, also collect items to donate to the Beacon Center, an organization that helps victims of domestic abuse.

The club doesn't forget about its own either. Parsons said that, even though the yacht club closed for a few months due to COVID-19, the membership raised enough funds to make sure none of their staff members missed a paycheck.

“There’s a lot of comradery, and that’s what I’m most proud of," Parsons said.

The club is always looking to grow its membership, particularly among the younger crowd, which is one of the reasons Parsons is hoping to start a new singles group and expand their business outreach.

The Halifax River Yacht club is a family, Wagner said. No boat necessary.

When she joined in 2005, she and her husband didn't know anyone in the area. Recalling the inclusion she felt when they joined brings Wagner to tears. She remembers the joy she felt when, at her first ball, she was told that they weren't alone — that they did have friends.

"This is a place where people feel like they're family," Wagner said. "We don’t always agree, but we agree on one thing: Our beloved yacht club."

Super cute place! I went for a bridal shower and was upset that there wasn't enough parking spaces. I had to park in the members only lot and pray that i didn't get towed afterwards. The decor is a little dated so I wish they just gave the place a little upgrade.

This is a beautiful venue, with a wonderful view of the marina. The food is excellent from all he casual Tiki bar to the more elegant dining room. I love the Friday prime rib special. The It's always amazing!

I have been a member of several private clubs in the past, but this by far is the best! Great, friendly membership. Lots of activities - themed dinners, wine club, tiki bar, pickle ball, sailing and so much more! Not to mention the finest chef and staff anywhere!! I wish I could give more than 5 stars.

Stopped on our way north for the past two years. The waitstaff is under trained, and the food is marginal. The facilities appear to not be used by most members. I found the members rude and quite cliquish. The only bright spot was the assistant dock master, he couldn't have been more helpful. Will not be using the facilities again.

This is probably my favorite members only club. Great steak and beautiful view of the river and yachts. Service is always very friendly.

This organization has proven to be one of the shadiest in Daytona Beach (if you know DB, that says a lot.) We were enticed by promises of a nice pool, interesting social events, good food & a fun tiki bar. We found a pool that is not heated (freezing in the cooler months), food that is expensive & marginal in quality at best, and events are boring & geared for the 75+ crowd. Finally when we asked to cancel our membership for a multitude of reasons, we were met with shady financial practices. We are members of a another yacht club in Florida. It is wonderful in comparison. Perhaps this yacht club should take a lesson from FMC.

Nothing bad to say about Halifax River Yacht Club. Live entertainment on Friday night was great. The crowd was happy and the entire place was buzzing. The menu is second to none. Food presentation and taste were extraordinary. Service excellent. Sitting on the Halifax River on a warm evening just made my week. Members enjoyed talking about the history of this 122 year old club.

Had a great dinner at the pool bar at this Yacht club. The people were great. I met some of the nicest boaters I have ever met. The food was perfect. One of the nicest nights out in a very very long time.

UPDATE: The unnamed subtropical storm that swept through Florida last weekend may have postponed the Daytona Boat Parade, but it didn’t dampen Halifax River Yacht Club’s holiday spirit! The parade is now taking place this FRIDAY, December 22!

Daytona Beach, Florida 12/15/2023 The Christmas Boat Parade (originally scheduled for this Saturday December 16) has been postponed. Due to the imminent weather conditions for this weekend.

Daytona Christmas Boat Parade Hosted By Halifax River Yacht Club

In 1982, a group of visionary individuals from the Marina Point Yacht Club set in motion what would become a beloved Daytona tradition. This iconic event, the Daytona Christmas Boat Parade, has since blossomed into a community favorite, captivating the hearts of residents and visitors alike. Its legacy is a testament to the power of unity and festive spirit that has ignited the waters of Daytona for over four decades.

The inspiration for this nautical celebration struck the Marina Point Yacht Club members after they witnessed the beauty of the Fort Lauderdale Christmas Boat Parade. Enchanted by the idea, they embarked on a journey to bring this magical experience to the shores of Daytona Beach. Under the leadership of Commodore Jeff Schulz, their combined endeavors led to the birth of a cherished tradition, one that found a warm embrace from both the community and yacht club members.

As time passed, the sail loft where it all began started to deteriorate. The yacht club recognized the need for change to ensure its survival. They took a daring step by acquiring a houseboat, meticulously refurbishing it to embody the elegance of a yacht club’s interior. This distinctive vessel found its home at City Marina, now known as the Halifax River Marina, and later, at English Jim’s Marina, today Caribbean Jack’s.

The parade faced a brief hiatus in its journey, but in 1995 and 1996, the Halifax Harbor Marina, supported by the Power Squadron, stepped up to the plate, breathing new life into the event. Twenty-five boats adorned the waterways, each hoping to claim prizes generously provided by local vendors. However, it was still in search of a permanent home.
