Hanse 548 review: The push-button 50-footer that can be sailed by a couple

Yachting World

Does push-button technology mean a 50-plus footer really can be sailed easily by a couple? David Harding puts the Hanse 548 to the test in the Solent

Imagine putting a cruising couple from the late 1990s into a time capsule and fast-forwarding them to the present. Then tell them about the Hanse 548 – a stylish, modern cruiser that offers exceptional value for money, sails effortlessly at 10 knots, fits in up to four double cabins and is easily managed by a crew of two.

Would these people believe you? Back in their day, a 40-footer was usually considered the biggest boat a husband-and-wife crew could expect to handle safely and efficiently. And even if they could cope in open water, what about manoeuvring and berthing?

Now let’s invite them to join us on our test sail on the Hanse 548. Just getting aboard will elicit comment because, for some people, the gunwale will be at shoulder height when they’re standing on the pontoon. Then, once the warps are dropped, our guests will observe how the boat can be extricated from an angled berth with only a few feet of clearance at either end, spinning in her own length with the help of the bow- and stern-thrusters.

We tested hull number one of the Hanse 548 over two days in the Solent

When we’re ready to set sail, once again they’ll be struck by the way things have moved on in 20 years. It’s not that any of the sailhandling systems are new or radical, because electric furlers, self-tacking headsails, electric winches and in-mast mainsail reefing have all been around for some time, as have the thrusters.

Some of these are extras on the Hanse 548, but what stands out about her is the way the rig, deck and cockpit layout work with whatever push-button systems you choose to make a boat of this size so easy to manage short-handed. For our 1990s couple it will be extraordinary to witness. Even by today’s standards it’s pretty remarkable.

About 15 years ago I was testing a 45-footer in Croatia. On one outing I hopped aboard with a local sailor who spoke little English, but sailing was our common language and we threw the boat around like a dinghy for a most enjoyable afternoon. You can do that with a 45.

hanse-548-boat-test-running-shot-tall-credit-paul-wyeth

The plumb stem, high freeboard and large angular ports in the topsides all play important roles in the Hanse’s design

A lot changes when you add an extra few feet. Everything gets bigger, heavier and harder to move, which is why you usually need either more crew or the sort of push-button help that most owners of the Hanse 548 are choosing.

Saying ‘most’ owners implies that there are more than one or two of them, and that is indeed the case: they’re queuing up for this new model, which took over from the Hanse 545 in late 2017.

Hanse has long been selling more boats over 50ft than in its 30ft and 40ft ranges. The yard has established an enviable reputation in the 50ft-plus bracket for spacious and comfortable cruisers that sail well, offer good value and don’t need an army to handle them.

Back in 2012, for example, the Hanse 575 was launched as a boat that could be managed by just two people. It really could be, though relatively few couples would contemplate a boat of this size if they had much coastal cruising in mind in parts of Europe. With nearly 60ft of length and a draught of over 9ft with the standard keel, there are many harbours, anchorages and marinas that you couldn’t visit without advance planning, if at all. It says a good deal about the 575 that Hanse has sold nearly 200 of them.

With the 548, the logistics are less of a challenge. At the same time it’s still a big enough boat to take you a long way in considerable comfort. As soon as the owner of the next one to arrive in the UK takes delivery he’ll be getting ready for the World ARC – and this is someone who’s relatively new to sailing, as are a good number of Hanse owners.

Just as 70 is the new 50 in terms of age, so 50 seems to be widely considered the new 30 when it comes to a boat’s length. If you have the budget, can find a berth and don’t mind the restrictions imposed by the draught (8ft 4in/2.55m with the Hanse 548’s standard keel), then why not have a boat of this size? That’s the conclusion a lot of people seem to be reaching.

On the subject of budget, there’s no doubt that the Hanse offers a lot of boat for the money at a starting price of just under £350,000 before VAT, though it would be easy to spend closer to £500,000 by the time you have been through the extras list.

hanse-548-boat-test-foredeck-credit-paul-wyeth

Smooth surfaces need to be treated with caution on a wet deck, but grabrails and substantial bulwarks help

Size matters

At this stage I should point out that the Hanse’s designation over-states her actual length: the hull is just under 52ft long (15.75m). Because of the plumb stem and near-vertical transom, the waterline is the same length as the hull once you’re moving at more than a couple of knots, and that’s helpful for covering the ground.

As we found on our two test sails from Hamble, you can take 8 knots for granted most of the time and at 10 knots the boat still isn’t breaking sweat. To be fair, you would achieve these speeds and more on many a smaller racing yacht, but it’s not bad going for a roomy, 20-tonne cruiser with a self-tacking jib and a crew of two who rarely need to exert themselves. The speed-to-effort ratio matters in sailing.

hanse-548-boat-test-running-shot-bow-credit-paul-wyeth

The hull shape promises good balance, comfort and performance

On our first outing the wind started at around 16 knots, letting us make upwind in flat water under full main and self-tacking headsail at 7.8 knots. When you need to tack, it seems almost unnecessary to call ‘ready about’ because nobody except the helmsman needs to do anything unless you choose to re-balance your glass. Hanse claims to have invented the self-tacking jib and, whether or not anyone challenges this assertion, the system works very smoothly.

A dying breeze later on gave us the opportunity to try the extra sail on our test boat: the 140 per cent headsail set on a forestay immediately forward of the self-tacker. It’s more for reaching than for windward work, though we managed to carry it at 50° to the wind and maintain 8 knots in 12 knots of breeze. Just bear in mind that you have to furl it before tacking or gybing.

With Seldén’s 300 E electric Furlex and the optional Lewmar electric 55 self-tailers in addition to the 65 primaries, all within easy reach of the twin helm stations, it’s a push-button operation that takes about 35 seconds.

It’s a breeze

Given the predominantly light conditions on our first sail, we headed out again a few days later. This time we were greeted by a south-south-westerly topping nigh on 30 knots across the deck, so we left a few rolls in the mainsail as we punched our way upwind at 8.1–8.2 knots.

A conventional, fully battened mainsail in Dacron comes as standard, whereas we had the luxury of electrically-powered in-mast reefing as well as Elvstrom’s high-performance membrane sails and a vertically battened main.

Not surprisingly, the Hanse’s weight and waterline made light work of the short Solent chop, though the helm loaded up a little when the gusts occasionally pushed us beyond 20° of heel. Otherwise weather helm was noticeable but modest and the feel through the Jefa steering reassuringly direct – a function of both the linkage, in which there’s remarkably little friction, and the single rudder.

hanse-548-boat-test-helm-credit-paul-wyeth

Choosing extras means no need to wind a winch handle

Hanses have always had single rudders and the 548 maintains the tradition. Despite the broad stern, the blade kept the boat on track until the gunwale was approaching the water. You wouldn’t normally push things this far but it’s good to know where the limits lie.

Another notable point in the face of modern trends is that the Hanse eschews the now almost obligatory chines. By many standards it’s a conservative hull shape; one that promises good balance, comfort and performance in a wide range of wind and sea conditions.

Our test boat was kept sunny side up by the standard L-keel in cast iron. If you really want to save draught at the expense of performance you can have the shallow 7ft 2in (2.20m) option, or go the other way with a deep (9ft 2in/2.80m) T-bulb. Prop-wise, a three-bladed folder thankfully comes as standard.

hanse-548-boat-test-lockers-credit-paul-wyeth

Lockers for the rope tails are under the helm seats each side

As has become the norm on boats of this size designed for short-handed cruising, the Hanse devotes a lot of space to non-active crewmembers.

The mainsheet is anchored forward of the companionway (to strong points, not a traveller) and the tails are led aft, German-style, to the primary winches by the wheels. With the sheets and furling systems for the headsail(s), plus halyards and other lines also being led aft, the main cockpit area is completely rope-free.

Two times tables

Here you have not one table but two, leaving a direct route from stern to companionway and plenty to brace against. Those who really enjoy pressing buttons, or sunbathing (or both) can have tables that lower to form sun-loungers. The controls are on the consoles, along with everything else including, on this boat, B&G’s Zeus 3 multi-function plotter, display and controller integrated with the CZone system.

Our guests from the 1990s would be awe-struck by the ability to turn on or off all the appropriate nav lights for sailing or motoring, control the fridge or engage ‘off boat’ mode before stepping ashore simply by touching a screen at the helm.

On a more mundane level, one consequence of having so many lines led aft is a lot of tails. Hanse’s solution is a tail-locker under the helm seat each side. You need to maintain some discipline, but even after a fair amount of sailhandling over the course of a few hours we managed to avoid creating too much of a snake-pit.

Finot-Conq-FC3-53-boat-test-running-shot-aft-credit-James-Mitchell

Finot-Conq FC3 53 test: Can this offshore cruiser deliver the best of both worlds?

If the electric green hull and striking looks of Nica don’t grab your attention, then its on-paper description certainly will.…

Minor criticisms in the cockpit include the lack of handy lockers for things like sunglasses, sandwiches and binoculars. There’s a shallow ‘glove box’ under an acrylic lid either side of the companionway, but these won’t hold much and there’s nothing further aft apart from the large locker beneath the starboard seat. Those of us who want to keep a camera – or anything else for that matter – somewhere safe yet easy to reach near the helm feel rather bereft.

I’d also like to see handholds on the outboard sides of the helm consoles to match those inboard. You need something when going forward on the leeward side. Otherwise, moving around a dry deck is easy on the level: in the modern Hanse style it’s pretty flat and ideal for outdoor living in sunny climates.

Substantial bulwarks are reassuring, but handholds are limited and there are plentiful deck hatches as well as smooth outer edges to the low coachroof, so you have to bear that in mind in the wet and think what you’re going to hang on to in a seaway.

hanse-548-boat-test-tender-garage

The bathing platform lowers to reveal the garage and optional telescopic davits

If your mission really is to get into the water, the electrically operated stern platform is probably the best place to start from.

Press a button (yes, another) on the starboard helm console and the transom hinges down to reveal a garage big enough for a folded 3.6m F-RIB (folding RIB). Then lift up the hatch in the platform and slide out the boarding ladder. It has all been thought out.

Open accommodation

Going down below is supremely easy: it’s more like walking downstairs than negotiating a set of companionway steps. Full-height stainless steel pillar handholds each side are thoughtfully provided, but moving forward from there when the boat’s heeled is more of a challenge. Handholds overhead, 7ft above the sole, are of limited use and would be out of reach for many. It’s a wide-open cabin sole to slide across.

hanse-548-boat-test-saloon

Directors’ chairs were chosen instead of a bench seat on this boat

Such practicalities aside, the accommodation has much to offer. For a start, the volume is enormous. There’s a lot of light thanks to all the hatches, long windows in the coachroof and large ports in the topsides that let you see out when sitting down.

On our test boat the joinery was in European light oak; mahogany is standard. It’s neatly finished throughout and barely a bead of sealant is visible.

Plenty of layout variations are possible. Constant features are the two double aft cabins, the galley (to starboard of the companionway) and the saloon. Elsewhere you can mix and match. The bigger of the aft cabins, to port, can have a large en-suite heads and shower opposite the galley, as did ours.

hanse-548-boat-test-guest-cabin

Hanse has long favoured having the master cabin in the bow, though the occupants of the port aft cabin will hardly be slumming it

Alternatively the space can be used for a smaller heads plus a utility cabin, or for two extra bunks. At the other end of the boat it’s a choice of large master cabin or twin smaller doubles, while right in the bow is a large stowage locker or a crew’s cabin.

Styling to suit

Hanse went through a phase a few years ago when almost everything down below was a cube or a square, sometimes in garish colours. Thankfully the styling has mellowed since then. In the case of the 548 it’s modern but rather more subtle and unlikely to date so quickly.

All the usual mod cons can be fitted: dishwasher, washing machine, air-con and so on, plus a pop-up TV and the ‘gourmet island’ barbecue unit aft in the cockpit complete with fridge and sink.

hanse-548-boat-test-engine-room

Hinging up the companionway steps reveals the Yanmar diesel. Side panels can also be removed

Because of the enormous freeboard, vertical space is plentiful below decks and there’s room beneath the raised sole in the saloon for the two diesel tanks, one of the water tanks and the bank of four domestic batteries.

That doesn’t mean under-bunk space is available for stowage, however: much of it is occupied by systems of one sort or another. You can’t stow anything behind the backrests in the saloon because it would drop straight down under the bunks: it’s all one space.

Big plus-points in my book include the absence of interior mouldings except in the heads and some partial headliners. Among other benefits are better access to the inside of the hull (which is balsa-cored above the waterline), the systems and the seacocks.

You can also reach the structural elements more easily and see that bulkheads are bonded directly to the hull and deck. Given the scope and complexity of the electrical and mechanical systems on a boat like this, the more readily you can get at them the better.

Our verdict

The Hanse 548 is a cleverly designed boat that evidently presses the right buttons for many people. She’s built by a yard that has always done its own thing, setting its own trends and refusing to follow fashion simply for fashion’s sake.

The boat’s appeal for gentle cruising with lots of outdoor living is obvious. For what sailors of a more traditional bent might call serious cruising, things are less clear-cut. For a start, those wide-open spaces that are so welcome at anchor might be rather less welcome in heavy weather. That’s an inevitable compromise.

From an offshore perspective, the righting moment is substantial, as you would expect with a boat of this size and weight, even if the AVS (angle of vanishing stability) is relatively modest at around 110°.

All told, the new Hanse is an engaging blend of the tried-and-tested and avant-garde that makes owning a boat of this size a possibility for more people than ever before. What would our guests from the 1990s make of her? After their initial bewilderment I think they’d be suitably impressed.

Hanse 588 Review

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: January 9, 2019

hanse yachts opinie

To my eye, perhaps the cleanest-looking yacht to be introduced in 2018 was the Hanse 588, the second-largest offering from the German builder in a line that now encompasses a range of boats from 31 to 69 feet. Look, I enjoy a clipper bow and sweeping sheer line as much as any traditionalist, but lately I’ve derived as much optical pleasure from the lines of all-business performance cruisers like the 588. Perhaps it’s because function follows form, and a yacht like this — with features that include a straight bow and stern, ample topsides, wide beam, maximum waterline, minimalist deck jewelry and razor-sharp sheer — is nothing if not a flat-out sailing machine. You can just see it.

And then there’s this: At first glimpse, it looks rather simple. But on closer inspection, it’s anything but. And I also find broad appeal in that dichotomy. But make no mistake: For all of its ultramodern Euro styling, this is a well-constructed, systems-rich, state-of-the-art vessel, with a host of elements that will make sailing and cruising safer, and more efficient and fun.

Let’s start with the sail plan and rig, a triple-spreader Seldén aluminum spar with no traveler and a self-tending jib. Straightforward, right? Well, not so fast. The mainsheet is actually a German-style setup that’s double ended and led aft, port and starboard, to cockpit winches adjacent to the helmsman. The main itself on the boat

I sailed is a powerful, fully battened number stashed on an optimal in-boom FurlerBoom furler. The aforementioned jib is unwound from a Furlex manually controlled furling unit, and the code zero genoa riding shotgun in the twin headsail configuration is set off a Reckmann electric furler. All sails are built using composite-laminate sailcloth by Elvström. In other words, like everything else, they’re high tech.

There are twin wheels, each led to the quadrant independently of each other. Stashed below the cockpit, accessed via the transom’s drop-down boarding gate/swim platform when lowered, is a Williams jet-drive tender (I am not making this up), which answers the always intriguing dinghy question (both the type and its storage) in a major way. There are thrusters in the bow and the stern, both retractable, very handy items when pivoting or docking a boat this big. Are you recognizing a recurring theme here? With the Hanse 588, on multiple levels, what you don’t see is what you get.

Owners cabin

A raised bulwark rims and accentuates the flush deck, which can be specified as real teak (an option) or synthetic teak, with a choice of eight different finishes. On our test boat, the sight lines from the dual helms were fabulous, thanks largely to the low coachroof and the absence of a dodger or Bimini. (A fiberglass “T-top” hardtop that covers the cockpit is optional, as is the sort of windscreen seen on many Scandinavian cruising boats.) There are six windows on each side of the hull; the company says it used the largest ones possible that do not compromise structural integrity. The windows serve dual purposes, emitting plenty of light into the interior and offering great views while breaking up the expansive hull from a visual perspective.

The boat is well put together, with balsa core employed in the topsides of the hull and deck in a laminate rich in polyester resin and coated with vinylester as a hedge against osmosis (the layup is solid glass below the waterline). The chainplates are reinforced with carbon in high-load areas, and the vacuum-bagged bulkheads are cored for a combination of lightness and strength before they are tabbed into the deck, floors and hull. The iron keel (there are three different sizes and drafts available, ranging from a shallow L-shaped model that draws 7 feet 5 inches to a deep, T-shaped version drawing 9 feet 4 inches) is anchored to keel plates embedded in the integrated floor grid.

Down below, there are literally dozens of choices to make with regard to upholstery colors and fabrics, carpeting, and woods for flooring and furniture, which gives owners an incredible amount of leeway to personalize the interior to their own liking. Our test boat’s furnishings were finished in cherry, which was quite pleasing. Likewise, with the floor plan, there are multiple layouts for accommodations from which to choose. The boat we inspected had the single spacious owners cabin forward, with an island berth and a single roomy head (this space can also be two cabins and two heads); a crew’s quarters in the bow (which can also be a gargantuan sail locker); and a big head to port at the foot of the companionway (this can also be a workroom or another sleeping cabin). There were also twin double cabins aft with en-suite heads. The central saloon of our test boat featured large settees to port and starboard, with the U-shaped galley also to starboard. A straight-line galley with an incorporated central island is also available.

main saloon

Alas, the day of our sea trials on Chesapeake Bay last fall, in conjunction with the 2018 Boat of the Year contest, dawned absolutely windless, and we were unable to conduct a test sail. But the boat performed more than admirably under power, registering better than 9 knots at 2,150 rpm. And, in terms of decibel level, it was one of the fleet’s quietest boats, a fact that was not lost on BOTY judge Ed Sherman.

“One of the factors that I have always used to help me sort out a very broad-based quality issue is how noisy the boat is when you’re motoring along,” Sherman said. “All that’s indicative of all these parts — doors that don’t fit right, floorboards that move — that can induce harmonics that go through the whole boat when you’re under power. And here, we have a boat that’s right down there with the highest quality and most expensive yachts in terms of the noise level down below. I guarantee that’s a derivative of the efforts that have been taken in designing and executing all the assembled components in the interior. For Hanse, the tolerances are getting tighter. Whatever they’re doing, it’s really working.”

Yes, Mr. Sherman. It certainly is.

Hanse 388 review: a comfortable and elegantly styled yacht

David Harding

  • David Harding
  • February 13, 2023

Largely because she’s not the most trendy boat of her size, a new Hanse 388 was the clear choice for an owner moving up from a 32-footer. David Harding finds out why

hanse yachts opinie

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

When buying a new boat, it might be tempting to choose the most up-to-date model you can find within your size and price range. Why not take advantage of the latest in design and styling and, at the same time, give yourself the maximum future-proofing?

That’s not how everyone sees it. There’s a good range of boats in the more traditional or conservative style that most of us would recognise as distinct from the products of the (arguably more fashion-conscious) mainstream production builders. Boats such as Arconas and Rustlers, for example – though hardly comparable with each other in many ways – are from builders who cater for owners with a different set of priorities from those homing in on a Beneteau or a Dufour.

Even within the mainstream builders there are different approaches. While some have embraced chines, twin rudders, ultra-wide sterns and open-plan interiors, others have kept things a tad more traditional.

Take Hanse, for example. The German giant has never been one to stand still and has continually updated its models. I tested the new Hanse 460 in the October 22 issue of Yachting Monthly and there’s no doubt that it’s as up-to-the-minute as a cruising boat designed for popular appeal could possibly be.

Further down the size range, the Hanse 388 is based on a hull that was designed for the 385 back in 2012. The deck, cockpit, keel and accommodation underwent changes when the Hanse 385 became the Hanse 388 a few years ago, but the hull worked so well that it was left alone.

The 388’s hull is the same as the 385’s, but it has large hullside windows and a deeper keel. Photo: David Harding

This is the boat that appealed to the owner when he was looking to move up from the Dufour 325 he had owned for 10 years. ‘I wanted something between the racy racers and the heavy cruisers,’ he explained.

‘I looked at a Hallberg-Rassy and would have loved an Arcona because they sail beautifully, but I don’t do enough serious sailing and couldn’t justify the money for the amount of use I would give it.’

Choosing a compromise

Having sailed since childhood and spent his life as a naval architect working principally on the design of superyachts, the owner knows a thing or two about boats. He’s well aware of the fundamental differences between boats from the smaller, more expensive yards and the ‘general production builders’ and was prepared to accept them. At the same time, he also knew what he was and wasn’t prepared to accept in a boat (‘and this will be my swansong boat’) from one of the latter.

hanse yachts opinie

As an existing Dufour owner, he naturally looked at the Dufour 390 as well as the equivalent Beneteaus, Jeanneaus and Bavarias, among others. What put him off in many cases were the twin rudders. ‘They’re good if you’re doing lots of long, windy reaching legs,’ says Tony, ‘but much harder work for manoeuvring in marinas, even with a bow-thruster. I prefer a deep single rudder.’

Open-plan or semi open-plan interiors were something else he didn’t like. He regularly sails with members of his sailing club on short trips around the Solent, so privacy and separate cabins are essential. That’s one reason why he chose the three-cabin version of the Hanse even though, in a boat with a hull length of 11m (36ft), it entails compromises elsewhere.

hanse yachts opinie

Sail controls are handled by a bank of clutches and a self-tailing winch each side by the helm stations. Photo: David Harding

Some sportier alternatives were rejected because they didn’t provide enough living space for his crew, and his choice was further narrowed by the build quality. ‘It was a matter of finding a boat that had good performance combined with the space and the volume downstairs. I like the better quality of the German boats; the joinery and the fittings. All the deck gear is hefty. If you look at some others, it’s much smaller, and so are things like the boom. The Selden rigs are better finished with nicer fittings.’

More than skin deep

Skin fittings in composite polymer also appealed to Tony, as did the chunky boarding ladder, among other features.

Having now sailed the boat for a couple of seasons – recording the trips on his phone via the My Hanse software – he is happy with his choice. As you would expect, the extra size makes a big difference compared with the smaller Dufour. ‘The old boat was 10m long and this one is 11m’, he says. ‘It gives a lot more space – the cockpit is huge’.

He particularly likes the twin wheels, which make it easier to walk around and give a greater choice of seating positions. ‘It’s much more sociable when you’re sailing downwind, having two people sitting by the wheels rather than one at the helm and one forward,’ he says.

hanse yachts opinie

A wide range of colours for the upholstery, veneer and sole boards can be combined to create the desired ambience. Photo: David Harding

Such are the benefits of a bigger, more modern design with a wider stern and more space all round. More speed is another benefit – a result of a waterline that’s also 1m longer than he had before. The owner can see that his average speed on passages has increased from five knots to six.

When we went for a sail from Lymington, we had enough wind – a good 14-18 knots and occasionally more – to make sure we clocked well over 6 knots most of the time. Being from the northwest it gave us nice flat water too. Not so nice were the torrential downpours, which encouraged us to put the sprayhood up again once I had taken the photos and video from the RIB.

The self-tacking jib is an important feature for Tony, as is the large sprayhood. ‘In the Solent you do a lot of tacking. I can just sit in the shelter back here and tack so easily.’

hanse yachts opinie

The master cabin is in the bow, complete with hull ports and a large deck hatch. Photo: David Harding

When winching is called for, the electric primaries – among the upgrades on Scribble – also help to make sailing easy. The two Lewmar self-tailers handle all the lines, including the split mainsheet and the jib sheet, that are led to a bank of clutches just forward of the wheels. The arrangement perhaps works less well if you have an active crew, but it’s designed for short-handing and in that context it makes sense.

One way in which the Hanse 388 stands out is in making you reluctant to give up the helm. It makes a world of difference if the feel is precise and direct, if the boat and the rudder are both nicely balanced and if the boat responds to what you do.

The Hanse 388 continued to respond even when asked, most unfairly, to bear away from hard on the wind, fully powered up with the sheets pinned in. That’s one of my standard tests and a big ‘ask’ for any boat. The single deep blade does its job very well.

At the helm you have a good perch outboard on the side deck or, if you choose to sit inboard, on a hinge-up seat. Instruments can be mounted in a swivelling pod on the aft end of the cockpit table.

Performance plus

In terms of performance, the Hanse leaves little to complain about for a cruising boat. We clocked between 6.3 and 6.6 knots on the wind and tacked through 80° in the flat water.

The log climbed to over 7 knots when we cracked off a few degrees, though self-tacking jibs instantly twist out too far. Unless you rig up barber-haulers or have the cruising equivalent of a Code 0 ready to go, that’s a compromise you have to accept.

The Quantum tri-radial laminate sails on Scribble were ordered as upgrades from Hanse. Combined with the clean bottom and folding prop (the owner changed the supplied two-blade folder for a three-blader), they let the boat show what she could do. That said, with simple sail controls and no mainsheet traveller, scope for tweaking is limited.

It would have been more limited with in-mast reefing. While the owner has sailed on a lot of in-mast boats and accepts that Selden has some good systems now, he still prefers a conventional mainsail – fully battened in this case. He has marked the halyard and reefing pennants to make reefing as slick as possible.

Stowing the sail as it comes down is a bigger challenge, largely because of the large sprayhood, long boom and absence of a traveller to move the boom across to one side. Two crew plus a helmsman liberated by an autopilot can usually manage; otherwise tidying it up can be done in the berth.

With a mainsail contained by lazyjacks, opening the clutch and letting the halyard run is normally an option if you’re in a hurry. The problem is that some of the Dyneema halyards, once compressed on initial use, became too small in diameter for the clutches to grip, so they were changed from 10mm to 12mm and no longer run as freely as they did. It’s hard to find the perfect answer, but the owner has been very happy with the support and after-sales service he has had from the Hanse dealers, Inspiration Marine.

Below decks

Accommodation was an important consideration in the purchase of Scribble . The owner spends a lot of time aboard and sails at least once a week, often more.

Choosing the second double cabin in the stern, to starboard, means trading the full-depth cockpit locker for one of half-depth. It’s supplemented by two under-sole lockers aft, one for a liferaft.

In the Hanse style, the interior is light and airy. The Hanse 388 has many more deck hatches than the Hanse 385, and ports in the hullsides too.

The owner chose the colours of the veneer, the sole boards and the upholstery to create a modern feel, and the grey upholstery is not a world away from the grey/blue of the gelcoat (‘I went against all my better instincts and got a coloured hull’). Whatever Tony’s misgivings might have been at the time, the result is rather elegant.

Features that he likes include the rounded forward end of the heads compartment. Finished in vinyl rather than veneer, it’s inconspicuous compared with many. As he says, ‘On a lot of boats you have a big, blocky, square-cornered toilet box sitting right in the middle of the saloon.’

Also on the list of positives are the big fridge (with front and top access), the drawers (even though they’re plastic), the size of the saloon (‘we can accommodate the crews from another couple of boats’), the accessible seacocks, which pass through solid laminate where the balsa core is ramped down to a single skin, the good lighting and the hinge-down touch-panel at the chart table for the lights and systems. ‘Everything is coded and labelled,’ says Tony, ‘but it’s still not easy for DIY. The wiring on modern boats is getting quite complicated. I would need help if anything goes wrong.’

His relatively small number of niggles include the lack of provision to keep the heads door open (you can’t leave the window open when it’s raining), a chart table with no fiddles, joinery with un-sealed end-grain, and the fact that all the interior joinery is veneered. ‘There are no solid edges. If you knock something, you can’t sand it out – you have to buy a whole new section. It’s just as with new cars: don’t repair – replace.’

The expert view

Ben Sutcliffe-Davies, Marine Surveyor and full member of the Yacht Brokers Designers & Surveyors Association (YDSA) www.bensutcliffemarine.co.uk

The Hanse 388 is a relatively new vessel and because of that, not many have come on to the used boat market until now.

I’ve looked at several Hanse 388s, usually while carrying out damage inspections abroad and for yards. Matching some of the gelcoat pigment colours can be a challenge.

Looking carefully around the topsides in good daylight is a prudent move and will show up any previous damage.

When buying any newish second-hand boat, it is worth approaching the original dealer and asking what, if any, model callbacks or modifications have been suggested since the model was launched. From asking one of the UK dealers, he wasn’t aware of any for the Hanse 388.

It is always important to check deck fittings, especially any retro fittings which have been fitted by an owner. Take a good look at the gas hoses for signs of wear and pay careful attention to the seacocks, especially if the boat is over five years old.

The Hanse 388 came with a Yanmar SD25 saildrive, the smallest of the Yanmar sail drive range. It requires a service every 100 hours, compared to the bigger units that do 200 hours.

If you are a sailor who tends to clock up a lot of hours in a season, then you need to be very aware of the service criteria, as it will mean the boat will probably have to come out of the water so oil can be drained from the lower leg drain plug fitting. The sail drive seal should also be replaced every seven years.

Boats tend to become a major part of any owner’s life, and it’s easy to understand why that has happened with the owner and Scribble. A great deal of thought and experience went into all of Tony’s choices, from the boat itself to every aspect of the specification and colour scheme. The result is a comfortable, elegantly styled and lovingly maintained boat that covers the ground swiftly and without much effort on the part of the crew. As the owner says, ‘You have to find the right compromise. This really fitted – it did most of the things I wanted. There’s not a lot I would change.’

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

  • Guide to Russia

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow
  • Admire world-class architecture: Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers has distinctive architecture and design
  • Learn something new: Visit the Museum of High-Rise Architecture in Moscow or the Metro Museum

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

  • 130m tall, 26 floors
  • Completed in 2001
  • Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

Afimall is Moscow’s largest entertainment and shopping complex, home to 450 shops, cafes and restaurants, a cinema, and a virtual-reality game park. The shopping centre is located in the central section of Moscow City, and a cinema and concert hall are currently under construction there.

Hanse yacht in production

Profile of HanseYachts AG

Developed by sailors. Tested on the Baltic Sea. Sold across the world. Since its founding in 1990, HanseYachts AG – which now encompasses  six brands  – has become one of the biggest manufacturers of seagoing, series-produced  sailing yachts  and  motor yachts . HanseYachts AG went public in 2007 (General Standard); around 23.23% of its shares are currently freely traded. In 2011, Munich-based Aurelius AG became the majority shareholder and currently holds around 76.77% of issued shares.

Second-biggest yacht-builder in the world

Second-biggest yacht-builder in the world

In terms of the number of yachts sold worldwide, HanseYachts AG is the second-biggest manufacturer of  sailing yachts  in the world. In the market for recreational motor yachts, the company is now among the top 10 providers worldwide. Production takes place at the two locations in Greifswald (Germany) and Goleniów (Poland).

Direct access to the Baltic Sea

Direct access to the Baltic Sea allows HanseYachts AG to test its range of sailing yachts and motor yachts under real-life conditions. Each new product undergoes extensive testing before being placed on the market. These test results are instantly and directly incorporated in ongoing product development. New materials and components are tested on water, not just under laboratory conditions.

Some customers travel all the way to the shipyard itself to pick up their new yacht before sailing back home, wherever that may be in the world. A crane carefully positions the sailing yachts, motor yachts on the water for the first time after they leave the production halls. For sailing yachts, the mast is set and all the rigging is installed on site.

Own production sites

Our own production sites enable fast response times and highly efficient manufacturing. The entire GRP production is carried out to the highest standards of craftsmanship by experienced specialists. The production process ranges from the lamination of small parts and the fabrication of hulls using the laying-by-hand technique to weight-optimised vacuum infusion for specialised yacht types.

At HanseYachts AG's headquarters in Greifswald (Germany), all wood and interior components are manufactured in-house. Ultra-modern state-of-the-art equipment featuring CNC milling machines ensures that the parts get cut to the exact millimetre. Highly trained specialists assemble the furniture by hand. The final assembly of the sailing and motor yachts gets carried out in a most cost-effective manner on the production lines.

The production site in Poland The beginnings of the Polish branch date back to 1995 - initially under the name Technologie Tworzyw Sztucznych (TTS) . Since then, yacht construction elements such as hulls, decks and floors have been manufactured here. In 2006, the company joined the HanseYachts capital group. The steadily increasing demand for the products led to the factory being moved to a new location in the Goleniów Industrial Park in Łozienica in 2008. A specially adapted, modern production hall for the manufacture of laminates was built there. As a result, our employees work under safe conditions and at the same time protect the environment.  The last few years of our work have been characterised by continuous development. Two warehouses were built in Łozienica, a laboratory and a design studio were expanded.

In 2015 and 2021, we also built two more production halls, where the assembly work for the final finishing of the yachts ready for sale is carried out.  Currently, we offer lamination, yacht fittings as well as the assembly of water, electrical and gas installations, engines, navigation and steering equipment and other equipment required for a yacht. Currently, six yacht models of the Dehler, SEALINE and RYCK brands are manufactured entirely in Łozienica. This means that they can be delivered directly from there to the customer or dealer. The dynamic development and the great interest in the products lead, among other things, to a significant increase in jobs.

The year 2022 marks another milestone: as a long-standing member of HanseYachts AG, the company name was changed to HanseYachts Sp. z o. o. to underline its affiliation to the group.

Qualified employee

A highly skilled workforce

HanseYachts AG employs an annual average of around 1,500 people. Of these, almost 20% are salaried employees and more than 80% are industrial workers. In the Greifswald region (Germany), HanseYachts AG is one of the largest employers.

Own development locations

One of HanseYachts AG’s biggest strengths is that we have our own development team as well as our own model and mould construction team. A team comprising 40 designers, engineers and technicians, all of whom are consummate masters in their fields and possess many years of experience. Our teams work alongside renowned yacht designers to create  sailing yachts  and  motor yachts  with a focus on quality and function – from the interior fittings and deck layout to the engine and air-conditioning system. Two in-house, five-axle CNC mills turn our virtual models into reality and are capable of machining components measuring up to 6 by 16 metres. High quality yacht-building starts by only using the best tools.

As a new design and development centre, the Baltic Design Institute in Szczecin complements the development department at HanseYachts AG's headquarters and offers additional expertise in the sectors of yacht design and structural dimensioning. The team of highly qualified employees has many years of international professional experience in yacht design as well as in the marine industry. The close cooperation of all development instances enables the creation of new, forward-looking products.

Premium suppliers

In addition to the components that we produce in-house, we also enlist the services of premium suppliers. We use engines from Volvo, Yanmar and Mercury; navigation electronics from B&G, Garmin and Raymarine; sails from Elvström and Quantum; heating systems from Eberspächer and Webasto; masts from Seldén and Z Spars; fittings from Harken and Lewmar; and running rigging from Liros. When HanseYachts AG selects its suppliers, three factors are non-negotiable: high quality, reliable deliveries with consistent quality and comprehensive after-sales service for end customers.

  1. Hanse 548 review: The push-button 50fter that can be sailed by a couple

Hanse has long been selling more boats over 50ft than in its 30ft and 40ft ranges. The yard has established an enviable reputation in the 50ft-plus bracket for spacious and comfortable cruisers ...

  2. Hanse 588 Review

Hanse 588 Review Courtesy of Hanse Yachts. To my eye, perhaps the cleanest-looking yacht to be introduced in 2018 was the Hanse 588, the second-largest offering from the German builder in a line that now encompasses a range of boats from 31 to 69 feet. Look, I enjoy a clipper bow and sweeping sheer line as much as any traditionalist, but lately ...

  3. Test Sailing the Hanse 455 Performance Cruiser

Our test boat was powered by the optional 72hp Volvo auxiliary diesel engine spinning a three-blade Flexofold prop. This proved plenty strong enough to get the boat going 4 knots into a stiff headwind at just 1,000 rpm. Increasing the revolutions to 2,000 rpm yielded 7.5 knots of speed, and at 2,500 rpm we did an impressive 8.6 knots.

  4. Hanse 400: popular modern performance cruiser

Voted European Boat of 2006, the J & J-designed, Hanse 400 still has all the attributes of a modern performance cruiser. Founded in 1993, Hanse became Germany's second largest production sailing yacht builder after extending its Greifswald site in 2005, and now produces 750 yachts annually including the Moody, Dehler and Privilege brands.

  5. Hanse 388 review: a comfortable and elegantly styled yacht

The Hanse 388 has many more deck hatches than the Hanse 385, and ports in the hullsides too. The owner chose the colours of the veneer, the sole boards and the upholstery to create a modern feel, and the grey upholstery is not a world away from the grey/blue of the gelcoat ('I went against all my better instincts and got a coloured hull').

  6. Boat Review: 2016 Hanse 455 Performance cruiser
