Ray White New Plymouth Solo Trans-Tasman Challenge 2026

The 2026 edition of the race, which will be the 15th race in its history, will finish at the Southport Yacht Club on Queensland’s Gold Coast. It will once again start from the New Plymouth Yacht Club, Taranaki. The Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Challenge is contested every four years and is the second-oldest continuously-run single-handed ocean race in the world. It's also the only race of its kind in the southern hemisphere and the 2026 race will cover 1240 nautical miles. Three classes will be catered for: Adventure class - Monohull, Adventure class - Multihull and IRC. Line honours is awarded the Sir Francis Chichester Trophy

Wow, That Was Some Finish!

The finishing line approaches, two great sailing days, smokin’, the race over the weekend…., four septuagenarians mid-tasman, from port to fourth, 2023 race start, three retire from challenge, the first 24-hours.

Wow, what an exciting and interesting start to the Ray White NP Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Challenge. Malcolm Dickson on Sarau tacked on the start line to be the first to cross. Mister Lucky laid the mark in a single tack, being the first to round. The fleet disappeared quickly over the horizon in 15kn from the NW. As darkness fell Sarau was heading NW with 5 of the fleet following a more westerly direction, converging close together. An IRC dual was occurring between Mister Lucky and Melting Pot. Allegresse returned to port late afternoon, from 12nm out to resolve an issue onboard. She and Mike Carter headed back out at first light and are making great pace and ground today in a very uncomfortable sea. Overnight conditions have been busy and challenging with 44kn and a very bumpy sea. Skippers reported all good onboard during this morning’s schedule, if a little wet. Lucy onboard Nerissa K developed some sail and electronic issues with her chartplotter and AIS late yesterday afternoon. Her sail issues saw her crabbing at 2-3 knots overnight. Lucy has been unsuccessful in resolving the issues in the rough choppy sea and is heading back to port. Meanwhile back in Port Taranaki, Apriori remains on her mooring suffering autopilot issues during the prestart checks. Malcolm Dickson and Sarau currently lead the fleet 180nm from the port, doing 6.5kn. Mister Lucky and Mark Hipgrave are leading the IRC division at 165nm with a VMG of 5.9kn

The University of Plymouth Yacht Club (UPYC) is an active and welcoming club open to all students at Plymouth University regardless of ability and experience. We aim to get people out on the water sailing as much as possible and create an environment where friends and team-mates can enjoy sailing yachts together. Whether it's your first time or you're looking to build upon current skills we offer a range of activities from cruising to racing. The club runs two recreational sessions a week for its members with each session costing just £7.50! 

As a club we offer a big variety of activities from cruising to racing and fun socials. Here's some things we do:

We hold weekly crusing sessions in the Sound on a Wednesday afternoon and Saturday. These are great for getting out on the water and getting to know the boats and other club members.

Easter Cruise - this is a great trip for those looking to improve offshore skills or build their mileage as well as good fun! It is usually a week of sailing during the Easter holidays. 

Summer Cruise - In June 2024 we will be heading to Sardinia for a week!

As well as being out on the water, we run a wide range of social events throughout the year! These vary from:

Weekly wednseday night socials - These are often themed, for ideas of past themes check out our instagram!

If going out isn't your thing then we also hold socials such as bowling and our regular quiz nights at the Royal Western Yacht Club

Christmas Dinner

'Colours' Awards Formal Dinner held towards the end of the academic year

In warmer weather we hold more outdoor activities such as beach socials and BBQs!

All socials will be announced on our Facebook and Instagram so make sure you give us a follow!

Meet the Skippers event, used for our members to find boats to crew on within Plymouth Sound - end of September to October, 

All UPYC are also by affiliation members of the Royal Western yacht club of England and have opportunites to crew upon large IRC boats here in Plymouth and across the south coast

The University Sailing League, a new series run by students for students offering student keelboat racing across the country

Our annual match racing event with other universities will be held in the Sound in March 2024

• Race training sessions on Sundays for those looking to make it onto teams and improving ,members current skills and techniques

We run theory sessions when the weather doesn't allow for sailing for those looking to brush up on a range of skills from knots to navigation.
