Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40

S/V Escape Plan is a 2017 Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 catamaran, for sale by owner. Escape Plan has been lovingly maintained and enjoyed by our family while cruising from the Abacos up the East Coast to Annapolis for the past seven years. Due to personal family matters which restrict our ability to cruise, we are regrettably having to offer her up for sale before we could sail away in retirement.

She is a low time, well maintained Maestro (owners) version with 3 cabins and 3 heads, offering your guests their own cabin suite. Many extras make this boat a safe and enjoyable cruising option for a couple (or single hander) that likes to entertain or enjoy quality time together!

The 38 ft length makes this boat a snap for a couple to get in and out of tight marina slips, and the oversized Rocna 33kg anchor gives you peace of mind while on the hook in anchorages. She has a fresh (September 2023) survey with a clean bill of health.

This model can be called a Voyage 38 or a Maxim 38 because Maxim Yachts, from Durban South Africa, provided Voyage Yachts with the Voyage 38. These performance cruisers were built in South Africa by Maxim and distributed through Voyage Yachts. The Maxim 380 was the winner of the 2005 Cruising World Best New Catamaran under 40 Ft . The 380 got the judges’ attention with its four-burner stove, and added headroom in the galley.

There are 6 solar panels with a total of 1100 wats on top of the afterdeck. They give the perfect shade and are very functional. There is no noisy generator on board. Ray marine equipment includes a good autopilot and radar.

Outremer 50 Standard

S/V Cheval is a 1995 Outremer 50 Standard catamaran, for sale by owner. We purchased Cheval in January 2013. As the second owners we have continuously upgraded her including her most recent upgrade late 2023 through 2024 in preparation for a pacific passage. A change of plans creates a rare opportunity to acquire this Outremer 50 standard ready to cross an ocean.

As of this writing to the best of my knowledge she is the only Outremer 50 standard currently for sale in the world. Sometimes referred to as the Porsche of catamarans this boat has the speed you would expect while being large enough to provide comfortable accommodations.

As she is only cored in the decks with solid hulls the common occurrence of water found in the cored hull at survey will not be a problem.

Knysna 440

SV Quazami is a recently surveyed 2004 Knysna 440 Catamaran in sail away condition, equipped for the cruising lifestyle and ready for blue water crossing, for sale by owner. She was extensively upgraded in 2021 and then sailed from South Africa to Brazil and then onto the Caribbean in 2022 by the current owner and his family of 5, who comfortably live aboard.

With 1190w of solar, Quazami is energy self-sufficient and can be taken to remote locations, without the need to ever go into marinas. She can comfortably sleep up to 7 people. Quazami has only ever had two owners and has never been in charter.  Currently in the Dominican Republic, and soon to be sailed to the British Virgin Islands and then onto St Martin. Recent survey available on request.

Designed by renowned naval architect Angelo Lavranos, one of the pioneers of the light construction technique for racing yachts, the Knysna 440 is an improved version of the legendary St Francis 44. She has been built to a high standard by the Knysna Yachting Company, who prides itself on its reputation within the industry for producing high quality, fast yachts that are able to safely and comfortably cross oceans.

The Tobago 35 is light and well canvassed. With 20 knots of wind on the beam the polars promise 9 knots of boat speed particularly with it JProp folding propellers, it make this model and exciting machine to sail. Despite his age it remain a solid choice for those seeking adventure on the water.

The Tobago 35 is a compact catamaran that offers a good opportunity with a smaller budget. Naturally seaworthy, the Tobago 35 is an innovative-looking sailing vessel.

S/V Dare Greatly is a 2020 Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 catamaran, for sale by value broker YachtX.

This yacht is the 4 stateroom/2 head layout and has been maintained to the highest levels. US flagged & documented (duty not paid), she is a blue water cruiser that presents as new from top to bottom with just 800 hours on her engines.

Priced $250K below a new one and without the 1.5 year wait, she is as close to a new, off-grid equipped boat as you’ll find with bottom paint Oct 2023, 7.5KW generator AND 850W solar with 400AH lithium ion batteries, A/C climate control, water maker, SCUBA compressor and numerous other cruising features.

Endeavour 44 TrawlerCat

M/Y The Big Yay is a 2006, Endeavour 44 TrawlerCat catamaran, for sale by owner.

The Big Yay offers a 3-stateroom, 2-head layout, master stateroom with queen/king-size bunk on the main deck, 6’6” headroom in the pilothouse and salon, walkaround top deck, easy stern boarding, new canvas enclosing the pilothouse. Her Endeavour dinghy has a new Mercury 10hp electric-start outboard motor.

Docked in Halifax Harbor Marina, Daytona Beach, Florida, with the slip transferable to the new owner. With the Big Yay’s 14’8″ height and 3’ draft, she is a popular Great Loop cruiser as well as a great Bahamas boat!

Endeavour 44 TrawlerCat

M/Y Fat Cat is a 2002 Endeavour Catamaran 44 Trawler Cat catamaran, for sale by owner. I love this boat as its main characteristics are she has prop pockets and 3ft draw. This is very good for cruising Florida and Bahamas, also with a narrow beam as catamarans come. We can usually find regular berths and not pay for a double.

She has fuel flow scan meters, and it is a joy to see the economy of the Yanmars. I never owned such an efficient boat with this square footage, and 1500 mile range at 8-10 knots. All work has been done in last two years, as I just purchased the boat in the Fall of 2020. Previous owner was a snow bird and rarely was down.

We are coming back home to get a bigger boat. Fat Cat has been great to us but we need more space as the kids have decided to cruise the eastern Caribbean with us. The western Caribbean has been great, its like a condo. You can move around the marinas and are very affordable. Easy to see in the water, ready to run.

Catalac 9m

S/V Déjà Vu is a 1972 Catalac 9M catamaran, for sale by owner. A hybrid with sail/solar propulsion, its main advantages are: sustainability, silence, no fumes/engine troubles, little energy costs, easy maintaining.

After more than 30 years of experience in designing and building solar powered boats, I ventured into the combination of sail and solar propulsion for a sea/inland waterways cruising boat using only renewable energies. It should be added that I use the boat as a means of travelling! – Europe is so much richer for cruising not using only the different seas but also rivers and canals.

So I replaced the diesel engines in a well-maintained Catalac 9m built in 1972 by 2 electric motors. These have the advantage that they require hardly any maintenance and are also highly efficient in the partial load range.

Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 Evolution

S/V ASPE is a 2016 Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 Evolution catamaran, for sale by owner. ASPE is hull number #140, an Evolution model launched in 2016. She comes with with 4 cabins and 4 heads. The Helia is a well proven catamaran with several circumnavigations. This is the later Evolution model with higher and better davits and newer windows (30% more light).

Our family has sailed the boat since March 2022. Fully equipped for comfortable and safe bluewater cruising. This boat has been upgraded by the owner and comes with an impressive inventory list. Haul out with antifoul, hull polish, engine and sail drives service just done (Sep 2023).

This boat is ready for takeover in French Polynesia from April 2024 with some flexibility. ASPE is a very well maintained and sought-after vessel that is ready to take a new owner on her next adventure. Start your sailing dream in one of the most beautiful places in the world!

Gemini 105MC

S/V Gem is a 2006 Gemini 105MC catamaran, for sale by owner. This is a one of a kind Gemini 105mc, perfectly rigged for single/short hand sailing with furling screecher sail (self tacking), furling genoa, AND furling inmast mainsail! Sparcraft mast, boom and standing rigging installed in 2015, along with a new Yanmar 30hp inboard engine with low running hours (+-1400h).

All systems have been maintained meticulously, and ongoing cosmetic maintenance is currently being carried out (interior teak, gelcoat polishing etc). We have not spared any expense since we’ve owned her. We had a survey carried out last year and no serious issues were found. Small finding have been sorted out since the survey (small sail repair, new genoa line, service of liferaft and fire fighting equipment). All up to date!

Included in the sale is a berth at the beautiful Preveza Marina, Greece. It is valid from date of listing until July 2024. Preveza is a wonderful town at the door of the Ionian Islands. Great staff and amazing facilities. A huge benefit to any prospective buyer who wishes to sail Western Greece and further into the Med! This is providing the marina is in agreement at the time of sale, but there should be no issue.

Bali 4.1

S/V Sabatica is a 2019 Bali 4.1 catamaran, for sale by owner. Never chartered. Second owners. Low engine hours. Major upgrades in 2023 for performance, comfort and security on the hook: Watermaker, Washing Machine, Ultra Anchor, 600 Ah Lithium House Batteries, Stainless Steel Solar Platform for a total of 1610W production, Solenoid switch propane control from the galley, Bow Sprit and Screecher, window screens, full cushions and foredeck sun shade. Hauled out and bottom painted in 2023. Engines and sail drives serviced in 2023.

We chose the Bali 4.1 model in general, and this 4 cabin/2 bathroom layout in particular, because we felt it offered the best comfort and living space in a vessel of this size while remaining a lively and seaworthy vessel.

Currently docked in Licata, Sicily. Could be available as soon as August in Western Italy or September in the Balearics. Thereafter moored in Southern Spain. Other locations are possible subject to negotiation. Sabatica would be sold ready to go with tools and cruising gear.

Leopard 46

S/V Paw Paw is a 2011 Leopard 46 catamaran, for sale by owner. This yacht comes fully equipped with twin YANMAR 54HP engines, RAYMARINE electronics, NORTHERN LIGHTS generator, wind and solar power, 600Ah lithium house battery bank, SPECTRA 12 Volt water maker, VICTRON 2 kW inverter / charger and air conditioning, to mention just a few of her features.

Whilst this yacht has been immaculately maintained, it also features numerous upgrades and enhancements undertaken over the years, including new standing rigging in May of 2023.

Lagoon 450S

S/V Mystic is a US-flagged, 2018 Lagoon 450S Owner Edition catamaran, for sale by owner.

The original owners are accomplished offshore sailors with 22 years of experience who have been cruising S/V Mystic through the Virgin Islands, New England, Florida, and the Bahamas since she was built. Mystic is currently in St. Maarten and ready for more adventures. Owners’ children are grown and busy, and business responsibilities make it difficult for them to spend as much time on the boat as they would like. This is their second lagoon catamaran, the first being a Lagoon 410, and they continue to love the brand.

Mystic has been the perfect platform for us to make lasting memories with friends and family and we believe it is the best 45′ cruising catamaran ever made. We have traveled many thousands of miles in safety and comfort. Our only regret is that we didn’t order a Code Zero and Spinnaker when we bought the boat for more sail combinations in both protected and offshore conditions. The boat needs only the new owners’ personal gear and provisions and she is offshore-ready.

Lagoon 37 TPI

S/V Jus Dreaming is a 1995 Lagoon 37 TPI Jeanneau Catamaran, Ready to cross the Atlantic. This boat is set up for a Full-time live Aboard couple with over $100,000.00 in upgrades. This is Not a project boat, it has all been done for you. This boat has crossed the Atlantic twice and is rigged and ready to cross again. I guarantee it will pass any survey.

American made, By Jeanneau in a joint production venture with TPI in Warren, Rhode Island, USA.  Known to be one of the strongest catamarans ever built. (They Just don’t build them like this anymore)

Built by French Jeanneau in a joint production venture with TPI in Warren, Rhode Island, USA to the highest standards of construction and finish; the Lagoon 37 has good sailing ability and excellent interior and exterior living space. Designers of the Lagoon 42, Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prevost reproduced the winning formula in a smaller boat.

Leopard 46

S/V New World is a 2009 Leopard 46 catamaran, for sale by owner.

Launched in 2009, New World has been consistently lived on full time by a family of 4 since early 2020. She has sailed between the Chesapeake Bay on USA east coast and Grenada in the southern Caribbean while visiting all the islands in between. She has been updated and maintained to safely transport her family while having all the comforts including 2600 watts of solar with 1200 ah of lithium, Starlink, watermaker, washing machine, feathering props, downwind sail, and plenty of spare parts (including spare saildrive).

New World is a 4 cabin/4 head version. She has a double full enclosure to have a screen and/or clear isinglass. Dometic freezer, all Victron electrical system including 3000 watt Multiplus inverter, Cerbo with touchscreen, and even water tank sensors are just some of the upgrades that allow you to monitor your boat systems from the touch of your phone or computer. So much storage with all beds having external facing under-bed storage as well as under-bed deep storage areas.

Royal Cape 45

S/V Ego Domi is a 2003 Royal Cape 45 catamaran, for sale by owner. A fantastic family boat, Ego Domi is a bluewater cruising catamaran built in 2003 at Durban, South Africa. She was sailed across the Atlantic to Florida in 2003 by the original owner and never entered into the charter trade.

This is a large, well-appointed catamaran. Royal Cape catamarans are a very good value, are built with solid construction and are well-tried cruising boats. They are built very tough, as they were designed to handle conditions off the African East coast. This boat is great in rough seas with virtually no bridge deck slap due to the buoyancy of the hulls. Being well built, one shouldn’t expect a racing catamaran, but then again, if you’re looking for a catamaran with a large interior volume, which will keep 8 or so guests in consummate comfort, you could make worst choices than this RCC.

Originally built with fiberglass over a wood core as a 5 cabin and 5 head charter boat, she was converted to 4 cabins and 4 heads in 2005 by the previous owners. The 5th cabin was converted into a tool / spare parts/storage room while the 5th head was converted into a battery storage room. During conversion, it was noted that the laminated bulkheads were 2” thick; main bulkhead is 3” in places.

Lagoon 42

S/V Sonder is a 2019 Lagoon 42 catamaran, owner’s version (3 cabins), offered by her original owners, a husband and wife team, who outfitted Sonder for a live aboard sabbatical with extended, remote, blue water cruising in mind. No pets, no smokers, and never chartered, and with meticulous investments in professional maintenance and care, Sonder looks almost new in many respects.

Sonder is the perfect vessel to cruise distant shores and relax in comfort at anchor.  She has the combination of fun sailing and condo like living that makes adventuring abroad very comfortable for any couple. A VPLP design, Lagoon 42s perform very well compared to other similarly sized vessels.  With her square top main and Code 0 equipped, in reasonable winds and seas, Sonder often maintains 8-10 knots of speed while sailing, even while loaded down with cruising gear.

In a remote anchorage, Sonder’s oversized Rocna anchor, sun shades, large solar capacity and lithium battery bank, oversized and efficient generator with ample fuel capacity, all come into play to ensure comfort and safety for prolonged periods, in good or bad weather conditions. With the sail package, and the numerous amenities and equipment that are offered on Sonder, she is a rare, turn-key find, ready to sail remotely in the tropics worldwide, with both comfort and performance.

Lagoon 450F

S/V Freedom is 45 foot Lagoon 450F Owner version Catamaran built in 2013. This cat features a “Fly Bridge” and is ready for you to step aboard and set sail.

With the galley up design just off the cockpit in the salon keeps everyone included in the fun. The galley is fully equipped and the salon is loaded with a Samsung TV, Bosh washing machine and Raymarine I70 displays.

The 3 staterooms are all equipped with queen sized berths with hanging lockers and ample storage throughout with custom shelving added to the owner’s suite. Staterooms each have a private head with full height shower. She is a great live aboard. Fully self-sufficient with water maker, generator, solar.

Endeavour Trawlercat 44

M/Y Cattitude is my 2005 Endeavour 44 Trawlercat catamaran, for sale by owner. She is in impressive condition and turn key ready to cruise. Many recent upgrades, full garmin dual mfd setup. Well maintained, frequently upgraded.

She has the 3 cabin layout with a full beam master stateroom and full size queen bed. Cruise in comfort with a stable platform and plenty of interior space. Shallow draft (<3ft) and protected running gear are perfect for US coastal waters and the Bahamas. Get excellent fuel economy at 6kts with the flexibility of cruising at 16kts when needed.

New bottom paint 2023, recent survey with haul out including oil samples. This boat is beautiful inside and out. You will not be disappointed.

Endeavour 44 SailCat

S/V Beguiler is a 2001 Endeavour 44 SailCat catamaran, for sale by owner. Check out our rare 44 ft Endeavour sailing catamaran, manufactured in Clearwater, Florida. Endeavour’s quality craftsmanship has stood the test of time.

She looks amazing and was built for extended cruising and not the charter market, as is evident in its abundance of storage. We have owned Beguiler for 10 years, and used her for cruising the Bahamas every winter. Her previous 13 years were spent in the summers on Lake Ontario. Both owners are engineers, and coast guard auxiliary members and thus, she has lots of redundancy, and spares, and safety gear ,and a detailed log book. Yearly, she has been waxed, and her sails inspected.

This vessel has incredible head room and spaciousness with unparalleled views from the helm seat. The helmsman and crew all have plenty of space in the cockpit with its massive hardtop bimini and full enclosure for inclement weather. If you’re into easy sailing, then this is the catamaran for you, as all lines lead to the helm with a self tacking jib. Power winches make raising the sails a one person job and power davits make raising the dinghy easy. Fuel efficiency when motor sailing is extremely low at 0.5 gal per hr at 6 knots.

Lagoon 450 F

S/V Antares is a very well maintained 2018 Lagoon 450 Flybridge catamaran, for sale by owner. Very recent engine survey available upon request.

Engine cylinders have excellent compressions. Starts right up and purr like kittens. Good oil analysis results for both engines and generator. New engine batteries and generator battery. New trampoline and new bimini in the works.

New wind instrument transducer. Very comfortable queen size beds. New dinghy with 8.0 HP outboard included in the sale. AC, Watermaker, Electronics and Refrigeration are in good working condition. 4 solar panels keep the house batteries charged. A must see to appreciate. Motivated seller.

Corsair F28R

S/V First Tri is a 1998 Corsair F28R trimaran, for sale by owner.

First Tri comes with a trailer, Honda 9.9 HP engine, two mains: 1 mylar and 1 dacron, three jibs: 1 mylar and 2 dacron, spinnaker, and furling screecher. The interior has a propane stove and sink. Plumbed for a marine head, but I removed it and installed a porta-potty.

With the exception of a couple of trips to Destin Florida, she has been sailed exclusively in fresh water lakes.

This vessel had a lot of money spent on it in the last 2 years with a full refit in 2021 including new engines, sail drives, generator and standing rigging. This makes it a standout from other boats. A full traceable invoice library available with boat.

Catana 471

S/V Orion II is a fully equipped, turn key ready, 2007 Catana 471 (hull #86) catamaran, for sale by owner and currently in the Bahamas. She’s a beautifully maintained owner’s version with many recent upgrades including new dinghy, water maker, batteries, solar panels, electronics, windlass and trampoline all bought within the last 2 years.

With twin 75HP Yanmar engines and a daggerboard semi performance design, she’s fast and fun to sail. With all lines leading to the cockpit and ability to operate windlass and electric winches from the cockpit or helm, you’re able to single hand with ease. Daggerboards up, draft is less than 3ft making cruising the Bahamas a breeze with all anchorages and cuts available to you.

There was no expense spared on maintaining and upgrading our family home for the past 2.5 years living aboard full time with 3 young kids and cruising the Western Caribbean and Bahamas. As our sabbatical is coming to an end, it’s time for us to head back to land and someone else to take the helm. Available from April. Registered in the UK. Not for Sale to US residents while in US Waters.

Lagoon 42

S/V CatNip is a 2019 Lagoon 42 catamaran, for sale by owner. She is a 3 Cabin Owner’s Version, fully equipped and turn-key ready!

CatNip had her engines and saildrives serviced in 2023, and has a new tender bought in late December of 2023.

This new member of the Lagoon family is a sleek, modern design. While retaining the main features of the latest generation of Lagoons, it shows us a new path. The elegant silhouette with new coach roof design emphasizes the powerful and dynamic nature of this new model.

The Catamaran company is the world's largest retailer of new and used catamarans in the world. This includes being the largest Dealer for Lagoon Catamarans, the world's largest manufacturer of catamarans. Lagoon has over 85 dealers in every major market and country in the world and The Catamaran company has been their # 1 dealer more times than any other dealer. In fact, over the last decade The Catamaran company has sold more new Lagoons than every other Lagoon dealer in the US combined! The Catamaran company is also the World # 1 dealer for Gemini Catamarans, the largest US manufacturer of catamarans with over 1,200 sailing throughout the world.

Our California office is conveniently located in San Diego, on Shelter Island, at the heart of Southern California's yachting community. Only minutes from Downtown and the San Diego International Airport this office features a full service, catamaran friendly, ship yard with brokerage docks and is surrounded by yacht services of every type. Shelter Island is a neighborhood of Point Loma in San Diego, California. It is actually not an island but is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. The "island" is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) long and only a few hundred feet wide. A single street, Shelter Island Drive, runs the length of Shelter Island and also connects it to the mainland via a causeway lined with marine-related businesses. It was originally a sandbank in San Diego Bay, visible only at low tide. It was built up into dry land using material dredged from the bay for US Navy requirements in World War II. It has since been developed and contains hotels, restaurants, marinas, and public parkland.

Shelter Island is owned and controlled by the Port of San Diego, which also provides all police and other public services. Shelter Island businesses lease their location from the Port. Their Maritime Services Division is composed of three departments – Marine Operations, Maritime Trade Development and Maritime Properties and Facilities. Maritime Operations monitors all vessel activities at the Port’s cargo and cruise terminals, including several mooring areas and commercial piers around San Diego Bay. Take advantage of some of those anchoring destinations such as Glorieta Bay in Coronado, La Playa Cove in Point Loma and Mariner's Cove in Mission Bay. All three are fabulous, well protected, scenic anchorages. Reciprocal yacht club privileges are another fun way to visit different parts of the bay. Or enjoy a day on the water. A day sail in San Diego can easily include open ocean sailing with views of Hotel del Coronado, Point Loma Lighthouse and the Los Coronados Islands of Mexico or a scenic sail by the San Diego waterfront with features like the historic Star of India, the USS Midway museum and the Coronado Bay Bridge.

SAN DIEGO, California, July 21, 2015 — Gemini Catamarans is pleased to announce the selection of The Catamaran company as their authorized dealer in California.

Following over a decade of successful years of representation of the Gemini brand in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states, The Catamaran company has expanded into the western market with a location in Shelter Island, California, a community of San Diego.

“The Catamaran company is the worldwide leader in all aspects of the catamaran market,” says Gemini Catamarans President Laura Hershfeld. “The success of our Gemini models is highly dependent on our dealer network. Having The Catamaran company, the world’s largest retailer of new and brokerage catamarans, strengthens our position in the western United States.”

California native, previous Gemini owner and yacht broker, Monte Cottrell, will be heading up the San Diego office. “We feel Monte’s understanding of both the west coast market and the Gemini buyer will be a great asset to The Catamaran company and Gemini Catamarans as we expand our marketing efforts to the west coast,” stated The Catamaran Group President Hugh Murray.

Laura Smith Hershfeld’s most recent design influence can be seen throughout the Legacy model. From the cockpit to the salon to the master stateroom, she has a strong understanding of use of space and the importance of light. The company believes these attributes along with the ease of sailing and effortless movement will be well received. Add to the mix that this will be the first time a Catalina Yachts built Gemini Legacy 35 will be available for viewing in its home state of California, Gemini Catamaran owners and enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to. Expected delivery is mid-August 2015.

About Gemini Catamarans Gemini catamarans have been built in the United States since 1981. Original Performance Cruising founder Tony Smith moved his entire family across a temperamental Atlantic Ocean to build a better boat and further introduce the United States, specifically the Chesapeake, to multihulls. Not only has the company survived but thrived now dotting the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers with over 1,200 Gemini catamarans from the 3000 model to the Legacy 35.

Lagoon is a world leader in sailing catamaran cruisers. Lagoon has been building luxury catamarans since 1984 and has kept developing its offer to satisfy all your expectations with a range of boats including a full line of sailing catamarans as well a new line of motor yachts.

The first generation of catamarans was launched from 1987 to 1996 with the Lagoons 55, 47, 57 and 67: all ocean cruising private yachts. However, the Lagoons 37 and 42 were more suited to the charter market. The production was limited, but it established some strong guidelines by which the brand could be recognized from the outset: the high quality of design and construction with better than average performance.

These are still Lagoon's fundamental values.

1996 saw the launch of a new generation of Lagoons that took over the market immediately with the use of the following basic principles: maximum protection in the sun, maximum use of space available (hence the vertical cabin windows, now a Lagoon trademark), more comfort and paying careful attention to the trends set by the private customers.

Since 2003, Lagoon is the world dealer in cruising catamarans due to its innovative range and supportive distribution network. Today, Lagoon can boast to having 75 passionate catamaran specialists distributors all over the world. Lagoon Catamarans are enjoyed all across the globe by private owners and charter fleet operators.

Since 2010, when VPLP's Oracle won the America's Cup, Nauta Design (another great name in naval architecture) has been working with Lagoon to design the interiors of new models.

As a Lagoon Catamaran dealer, The Catamaran company can provide you with the support and expertise to help you select your perfect yacht. Select a model to see more information and contact us today for more information.

Repo Boats: How to Get a Deal and Not Be Ripped Off

Jonathan Holmes 5.0 Rated 5.0 out of 5 5.0 out of 5 stars (based on 40 reviews)

Last updated on December 16th, 2020

When boat owners default on loans, the bank contracts with repo companies to recover the money. The repo firms sell the boats off to recover their cash, and you can get excellent deals on repo boats if you act fast.

With a good gambler’s instincts and some repair skills, you can get a good deal on a boat that will accompany you for years to come. However, one big potential downside to this game is that you don’t get any history or warranty of the boat at auction.

So, how do you get a repo boat deal and not be ripped off? In this post, I will share everything you need to know about repo boats before buying one.

Table of Contents

What is a Repo Boat?

If you want to escape the humdrum and give yourself the reward of a boat, nothing can stop you from getting the best boat out there. Especially not a limited budget. While you don’t have to spend a fortune on a boat, it doesn’t mean you should settle for low quality.

When people consider buying a boat, they often look past repo boats. These are usually cheaper while being better in quality than the new low-priced ones. That means you can set your sails without putting a dent in your wallet or getting tricked.

A repossessed boat up for sale is often one which a bank has seized when the owner fails to pay back the loan. A different lender might also seize boats when the owners are unable to keep up with their financial commitments. These owners go into defaults, and the bank or lender takes the boat and resells it to reclaim their loan money.

One significant flaw of these boats is no history and no warranty when bought at auction. As these boats have no historical record, you never know what you are going for.

Risks of Buying Repo Boats

Even though getting an excellent repo boat deal is not impossible, there are a few potential downsides to these boats that need to be taken into account. Some of them are seized due to illegal activities such as smuggling, or the owner might not be paying his taxes. Since they have no historical records, you never know what your boat has gone through.

Another factor that adds to this is the lack of responsibility of the owner, who most probably would have neglected the maintenance of the boat. Hence, the physical condition of the boat has most likely declined over time.

You may also miss the chance of a sea trial, depending on the company you’re buying from. Due to these reasons and no warranty after purchase, repo boats’ potential value declines, and dealers sell them at low prices.

If you get lucky, you might get the original boat manufacturer’s warranty, which is still applicable. This warranty won’t cover damages but might cover defects in the engine or electronics.

Without this warranty, you are signing up for unknown problems, but it might be a rewarding deal if no problems exist at all.

Things to Consider Before Buying Repo Boats

Here are a few things you have to keep in mind when you are in search of a repo boat.

Repo Boat Deals Go Quickly

By going for a repo boat, you might be able to afford a late model at a surprisingly low price. But, you will have to be quick because these boats don’t stay on the market for long.

As people are always seeking the best deals, the lowest-priced boats get sold quickly. The banks also want to recover whatever loss they can, so they price their boats with the lowest possible price tags.

If you act quickly and smartly, you can get your hands on a boat that is in good condition and fits in your budget. Taking too long to decide on a boat can mean missing out on a deal that you might not be able to get for a while.

Also, prepare to travel for bank-owned boat deals, as it’ll be worth it after you have saved hundreds of dollars on your purchase.

Negotiating Price on a Repossessed Boat

You might think that a boat listed by a bank is more open to negotiation, but that’s not always the case. You will have to find out how low a bank is willing to drop the price to get the boat out of its books.

A good way to find out is by making a low price bid on the post, which will give you an idea of how much you can negotiate further. Some relations with a dealer might also give you a hint on the lowest price the back is willing to sell the boat for.

The boat appraisal guide (BUC) will also be helpful during the negotiations. The bank likely knows the appraised value and is considering it to price the boat. Plus, they will have a fair chance to go below the resale value to sell the boat and get it off their shoulders.

Quality of Repossessed Boat

Getting a repo boat deal doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality or condition. Many repo boats are as good quality as any other boat in the market. They mostly need a bit of cleaning before they are all set.

Since the boat owner was not prepared to sell it soon, the condition of the boat varies in each case. The owner’s irresponsibility in terms of financial payment might also hint at a lack of focus on the vessel’s maintenance. Due to these issues, you will have to inspect carefully before purchase, especially the engine.

The problem arises when some banks don’t allow a sea trial when you are purchasing a repo boat. This way, you are not entirely sure if the boat will be able to survive the waters.

So, make sure your purchase agreement includes a pre-survey of the boat to ensure a fair deal, which is beneficial for you.

Condition of Repossessed Boats

Often the dealers of repo boats at auctions don’t know any more history of the boat than the buyer, which is why they have fewer reasons to justify their high price tag. In this case, they give you a warranty, but if it would last only 30 days, it won’t be of much use to you. So, go for a boat with at least a 12-month warranty on the main parts.

Furthermore, many repo boats have missing electronic parts, outboard motors, and other components that are out of sight. Therefore if a boat has all its features intact and all it needs is a little touch-up, you have found yourself a gem of a boat. A little scrubbing, waxing, and some new upholstery will reveal your excellent finding.

When it comes to larger cruisers, you have to focus more on the reliability of the vessel with fully functional systems. Then you can move on to other upgrades and add new electronics to finish off your masterpiece. As long as it’s reliable, a larger boat might turn out to be a better choice for many.

Fixing and Repairing Repo Boats

If you are going for a repo boat that was stolen and stripped of its parts, you will have to consider the cost that will go into restoring it to its original state. Repo boats often come without many of their electronic components such as GPS units, stereos, VHF radios, fish finders, sensors, etc., and outboard motors.

If you see a boat without these electronics, you are looking at a repair job that will cost you a fair amount of money. The body repairs will also cost you time and effort for correct matching of the external surfaces.

Even though these fixes require time and money, you can still go through them if you have the skills and the tools. A high-performance boat will likely have gone through more abuse, and you will need a high level of skill to repair the damages in it.

Alternatively, you could go for a slightly higher priced model that is undamaged or slightly damaged and doesn’t require many repairs.

Where to Find Repo Boats For Sale

Not sure where to get started? Here’s where to find them.

Finding Repo Boats for Sale

You will find various repo boat deals at auctions held online or in-person. Online sites such as Yachtworld and Boattrader have online dealer listings along with other used ones. There are also sites specifically for repo dealers like National Liquidators.

It is a good idea to search for auctions in your area and make connections with boat brokers to know about the boats in the marketing ahead of time. You will find all kinds of boats in auctions, ranging from small marine boats to yachts and even pontoon boats.

But, before you start looking for auctions, first try to decide which type of boat you want so you can scroll through your options faster. It will also be more convenient if you have a set budget in mind.

As you can find boats that fit nearly every budget, you won’t have much trouble finding one that fits yours. However, don’t get too excited on the first boat you see and make sure you have done enough research before making a purchase.

The best online boat repossession auctions are here:

  • National Liquidators – it is the world’s largest boat liquidation company with offices based in Cleveland, Ohio, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Capistrano Beach, California. Here you will find repo boats, bank repossession boats, foreclosures, and government seized boats.
  • eBay Boats – it’s the site where the highest bid wins from a fine selection of clean repo sailboats, open boats, PWC’s, etc.

As you already know, you can purchase repo boats through banks and lenders who are willing to sell at lower prices. They want to get the burden of the boat off their shoulders, which is why you can get a great deal on them.

If you need financing, the band can provide you with that as well, and good credit card scores also lead to lower prices.

Tips On How to Get a Deal And Not Be Ripped Off

Here are four tips to get the best repo boat deal without getting cheated on by the dealers.

Assess the Condition

When owners find that they are about to lose the boat, they stop caring for it, which is why it could have both interior and exterior damages. A repo boat in a rough shape might require some exterior touches and engine work as well.

But, you will be saving money on the boat, which you can use to do these repairs. You can buy the boat at a lower price and use the rest of your budget on maintenance.

One way to avoid risks is to carry out research on your desired boat type on the auction site and read everything on it. Read on the external and internal problems, as well as search on what you need to fix them. You can also get a professional estimate of the repairs to get an idea of the final cost.

If the final amount falls out of your budget, then step back and start your hunt again. Besides, going into debt to buy a repo boat does not make much sense.

Take Fast Actions – Repo Boats Don’t Stay For Long

As repo boats are listed at competitively lower prices, they don’t stay in the market for too long. As shoppers are actively searching listings, you might see a boat listing today, and it will disappear in a matter of days.

You might have an idea of how competitive repo boats are, so don’t be surprised if the boat you like has more than one bid on it. These bids will increase the cost of the boat, which is exactly why you want to act fast when you have found the one you like.

Nonetheless, even if you miss a deal or lose the bid to someone, don’t lose hope. You will come across plenty of opportunities to get the best repo boat deal.

Find Out What the Boat Is Appraised At

When a bank lists a repo boat, shoppers think they have plenty of room for negotiation. However, that is not always the case, and it’s hard to determine how low a bank is willing to go.

So, before making a bid, check out the boat appraisal guide to get an idea, as lenders usually use these guides to price their boats.

Get Ready With Your Cleaning Supplies

You will find many repo boats that are decent in condition. Usually, they just need good cleaning because owners stop maintaining the boats before repossession.

It also means the boat might need minor repairs as it might not have received maintenance in a while.

Request a Survey and Sea Trial

An inspection of the boat before placing a bid is strongly recommended. You want to do a pre-purchase survey of the whole boat to make sure it is worthy of going in the water.

Never go for a boat without a survey, or else the deal can turn out to be a huge fail. If you discover major hull damage or you end up replacing the engine, it will cost you more than what the boat is worth.

If the boat has a diesel engine, thoroughly check it or get it checked by a professional. This will ensure that you are buying a decent boat and not just problems that will cost you unexpectedly.

Boat Loans When Buying Repossessed Boat

Getting a boat loan from the bank should be easy as long as the loan does not exceed the coat of the boat. Moreover, it can be even easier to get the loan approved when you find a good deal at a low price.

Good credit and more money for a down payment will lead to a better interest rate. And even though it can be harder to get a loan for more than 12 to 15 years on an old boat, it is typical of all boat loan plans.

It might be tricky to get a loan from the same bank that owns the boat you want to get the loan for. The band might offer you a good interest rate, but it will most likely be very strict with the loan requirements. That is because the bank won’t want to risk another boat owner defaulting on the same repo boat, which is understandable.

A late-model boat kept under covers is the ideal find, but expect to pay more for it. Or, look for a boat that needs minor repairs, and the dealer offers some warranty so you have a repo boat deal that won’t be a ripoff.

Whichever season you choose to buy a repo boat, you can get the best deals in terms of price on your next used boat.

Best ways of finding yacht salvage boats for sale, ideal theft recovery boats for sale.

Salvage boats for sale are a welcome choice for anyone who does not mind paying repairs to get the boat back to its normal condition. There are times when things do not go as planned and boats are damaged, but it is still possible to salvage them. Yacht Salvage is often sold at very low prices because at most times, the owners are simply trying to get rid of them.

Insurance companies and owners usually give hurricane damaged boats for sale and theft recovery boats for sale at Salvage boat auction in the coastal areas after major storms or other natural disasters take place. A good example of such an occurrence is hurricane Dorian that hit the Bahamas. This is an event that had a great impact on the properties that had been set up in the area and this included boats and houses. The sales skyrocket after the hurricane as the residents counted their losses.

Ideal wrecked boats for sale

Most people who choose to buy salvage boats for sale usually take them to people with skills to do the repairs. In some cases, the people who make the purchases already have the resources and the skills that are needed to make the boat as good as new if not better.

There are abundantly used theft recovery boats for sale across the nation that may be willing to pay bottom-dollar for an old boat if they think it might hold potential for a refit and then resale. If you can pull your boat to them on its own trailer you stand a fair chance of getting a buck or two for that old rig – after all, if you can bring it to them, that means the trailer’s roadworthy and that alone has some value.

Deciding on the best yacht salvage boats for sale

The first thing to do after you find hurricane salvage boats for sale is to find out the kind of condition that the boat was in before the disaster hit. When you have an idea about the kind of condition, the boat was in before the loss occurred. It is very important. You need to think of it as a boat that does not have any damage. This helps you determine whether it was maintained well and whether there were any other damages that existed.

You need to ask all the necessary questions before buying salvage yachts for sale, theft recovery boats for sale, or any other old boat. You need to pick a boat that can be fixed without necessarily working on the entire boat. This makes it possible to know the pre-loss value of the boat and therefore you may place realistic offers or bid.

Considering damage

After successfully determining the pre-loss condition of the Yacht Salvage, you now have to consider the extent of the damage caused by the event that took place. This helps you evaluate the damages and establish what will be needed for the repairs. When you are considering the damage, you should overestimate it.

Types of damage that you can find on salvage boats for sale

You need to understand the damages that could possibly occur to a boat during the disaster. There are different types and they include:

In the case of Submersion, hurricane damaged  boats for sale have the most damage. Submersion damages the entire boat. Electronics equipment may be likely to tumble down by the water, but there is a possibility of saving the  boat engine  if it is taken care of instantly. This time it may be too late to prevent any actual damage and there are chances of hidden damage.

Dock rash happens when the boat rubs against other flutters, pilings, and the docks. Fixing can be done in some cases, but you may have to do some work to access some areas.  You will need some skills repairing this kind of wrecked boats for sale .

Wind damage

Repairable boats could also be wind damaged and this can be noted on the sails and canvas that could be shredded. Structural damage can also be caused by wind. The mast could also fall and cause damage to the deck and the top of the cabin. When there is wind rain, then more damage could occur inside the boat.

Salvage damage

Another thing you could notice when you buy salvage boats for sale. This happens as the container is being recovered. This is because the process could involve considerable stress and strains of drawing the boat from the water and into a vehicle for transport

This is also common and causes damage to the gear and fittings underwater. You may have to check the propeller shafts, rudders, keels, and props. You need to carefully inspect the insides of the boat and ensure you look at the steering system as well.

It is possible for hurricane salvage boats for sale to have one or more of the above damages. This is why a buyer needs to get as much information as possible about the boat that they are buying. You can look for an expert opinion before boat purchase .

Damage on salvage boats/wrecked boats for sale

Buying a boat with known damage is usually forthright, but the buyer needs to be prepared for unknown damage which may reveal itself during the course of repair. I suggest finding a reputable boatyard to affect the repairs. Documentation that the repair was done professionally should settle any prospective buyer’s concerns down the road when it is time to resell. I also suggest having a contingency budget for those unknowns as part of your overall approach. Buying a storm-damaged boat will take some risk, effort, and investment, but can result in keeping a good boat.

UK Boat Auctions: Buying A Boat For A Bargain Price

repo catamarans for sale

Eight top tips for boat auction success

1. Make sure you understand the true market value of the boat model. 2. View the boat with a surveyor during an allocated visiting window. 3. Do your maths in relation to the full cost of repair. 4. Factor in the auction fees and boat transport costs. 5. However exciting the auction gets, stick to your budget. 6. Don’t be tempted by a bigger boat than you can afford to own and run. 7. Understand that bidding is not a game. It is a legally binding process. 8. Once you’ve ‘won’ a boat, make sure it is formally registered in your name.

repo catamarans for sale

It’s easy to imagine that a boat auction involves a succession of unloved wrecks that have spent years on estuary banks, going slowly green and waiting for someone to take pity. But if you’re keen to find a pre-owned boat at a fraction of its market value, a boat auction is actually a much more versatile and dynamic place to go shopping than a lot of people think. Now, as ever, the most common type of lot at a traditional boat auction tends to be a repossessed boat or a compact project craft that has been damaged or abandoned – and for the most part, these often seem to take the form of small sailing boats and river cruises , as well as tenders , dinghies , canoes and kayaks . But while it’s still perfectly possible to hunt down a decades-old yacht for little more than pocket change, a good modern auction will also now display plenty of more recent boats of every shape and size, alongside a healthy spattering of new boats from local dealers. In terms of the buying process itself, there are certainly some unique guidelines that you need to understand when bidding at the auction but, in the first instance, getting a great deal involves exactly the same kind of research as you would lavish on a regular boat purchase…

How do you prepare for a boat auction?

As the buyer, it is always your job to put together a dossier of information to satisfy yourself that the boat in question is worth buying – and if you want to avoid ‘bidding blind’ or getting carried away and overpaying on the day, the same applies to buying a boat at auction. If you’re looking at a particular model, take a look at comparable boats on sales and brokerage websites to assess its potential market value. A list of auction boats is generally made available around a month before an auction, so if the boat is of sufficient value, it makes good sense to take advantage of the auction’s allocated visit times to inspect the boat with your surveyor . That will help you formulate a list of works required and to assess what kind of sale price would represent an authentic saving. In the absence of a sea trial , of course, neither you nor your surveyor will be able to uncover every potential problem but this remains a key step in helping mitigate the risks.

How does a boat auction work?

When you attend an auction in person, winking suavely at the auctioneer is not the way to bid. Instead, simply hold your paddle aloft in a clear and obvious fashion. If the auctioneer describes your bid as ‘provisional’, that means you haven’t yet reached the reserve price but that’s not to say that your bid won’t be accepted by the vendor. There may be a bit of negotiation but if your provisional bid is accepted (as is quite common), you are legally bound to complete the deal. Preferred payment methods vary from auction to auction so, whether you are bidding in person or online, make sure you know what is expected of you and be prepared to pay for the boat immediately and in full. Once payment has been made, you need to attend to two key jobs. Firstly, if you come away from the boat auction with a Bill of Sale but no formal title documentation, you need to get the boat registered in your name. And secondly, you need to organise the removal of your boat from its existing location. Auction boats are often put up for sale by Harbour Authorities specifically to clear space for new boats and new boaters, so you need to be proactive in talking to the marina, getting it shifted and paying for any delay while that happens. Clearly then, it’s important to do your sums before you bid. In addition to the expense attached to the boat’s relocation, make sure you factor in ownership costs, like insurance, maintenance , berthing and fuel. As the buyer, you should also be aware that you will need to pay an auction fee of between 10% and 15%, often with the proviso that a minimum fee applies if the sale price is particularly low. This figure does vary from auction to auction but in all cases, make sure you understand exactly what the all-in costs are likely to be, so you can bid from a position of confidence and authority.

What about other forms of boat auction?

If finding a local boat auction in the UK proves difficult, and you’re happy to join the throng of browsers on a non-specialist site, mainstream auction-style platforms like eBay can certainly help. And there are also now new forms of boat auction developing, through progressive operators like the Boatshed Group. Boatshed’s BoatBid platform is particularly interesting because it positions itself as a middle ground between a regular brokerage and a traditional auction. Instead of paying the full amount on a binding deal at the completion of the bidding process, the winning bidder signs a Purchase and Sale Agreement and provides a 10% deposit. They can then survey and sea trial the boat prior to making a final decision on whether or not to complete the purchase. At a stroke, that takes a lot of the risk out of the process and brings it much more closely into line with a conventional brokerage transaction – but as a result, the potential savings also tend to be significantly reduced.

If you’re keen to really maximise those savings, a salvage auction is generally a more promising option. These tend to involve boats that insurance companies deem too expensive to fix, but if you’re experienced in the field of marine maintenance and repair, there are still bargains to be had. And if you’re a supremely confident DIY fan in search of a low-value project boat (and you’re not intimidated by the clear and obvious damage that often results from flooding or fire) a boat auction site like www.boatwrecks.com is also a good place to look.

Alex Smith is a journalist, copywriter and magazine editor with a long history in boating and a happy addiction to the water. He’s worked on boats, lived on boats, bought boats, sold boats and – when he’s not actually on board a boat – he can generally be found in his Folkestone office, tapping away at the computer and gazing out to sea.
