Good experience for the price, cool facts. Wish it was longer. But isn't that what you want for all the good things to last longer.

A canal cruise is a must do when you visit Richmond! We had a great experience on our little adventure. I thought the price was reasonable and the captain was kind, courteous, witty and knowledgeable about the history of the canal and Richmond. We met at the small ticket office and walked around the beautiful canal area. I took the kids for a walk around to look for turtles hiding in the water. A flat bottom boat approached, loaded us all up and we were on our way. They had room on board for my youngest's stroller. The seating was a bit tight, but we all managed to get on board. We were joined by a great mix of folks that day, older, young couples on dates and families. Everyone was so kind and friendly. Our captain narrated the entire time and talked about the shipping history of Richmond, how the port helped shape a our nation, commerce, industry, the state of Virginia and the geography of Richmond. It was a 40 minute trip and the highlight was when a CSX freight loaded with coal greeted us from above as we waved to it. The water was calm and I would 100% recommend adding this to your itinerary on a visit to Richmond.

This was very cute and sweet. Me and my boyfriend needed a chill day out to just relax and enjoy the scenery and we did just that. This was about 35 mins long. We went out on this little boat and the tour guide driving was knowledgeable and cracked some jokes. You will definitely learn some facts about Richmond on this mini trip. In my own opinion, I don't think this is something for small kids. There were a few kids on the boat and they just seemed a little bored. They did enjoy seeing the turtles and the ducks... I did too... but I really enjoyed the learning experience. It was a very very cute date. Would we do it again, probably not unless we were taking someone who has never been. But it's a great experience!!!

A ver nice and informative trip on a canal through downtown Richmond. The pilot was dressed in colonial garb and discussed how George Washington heartily endorsed the canal's construction. It was a critical link that allowed goods from the Mississippi River to move through Richmond to the Atlantic for overseas shipment. The guide was very informative and the boat is pleasant, but modest. Prices are reasonable, but you need to allow time to find parking.

I thought this would have been a nice thing to do on a Sunday afternoon with my elderly parents but somehow our "Captain" made sure that was not going to happen. My father is in a wheelchair and were right in front of the boat thinking that he would be instructed how to get on the boat first as is usually the case getting on any type of transport like planes and such, handicap go on first as they take a little extra time getting settled. I saw he was loading people up and I alerted him that my dad was in a wheelchair and where can it go and can we get him on. He pointed to the back of the boat and proceeded to allow others to board and even pointed out that I was holding up the line! Instead of pausing the loading of passengers to allow my dad a chance to board and get a seat, he was rude and did nothing to assist the process of getting him on board safely. Instead my mom had to dash up front and get two seats where my dad (using his cane now) could sit and stretch his legs out. It was an ordeal. The tour itself is a waste of money. Even if the boarding process went smoothly, I still wouldn't recommend it. It was boring and that captain just went on about himself and didn't really give a lot historical or useful information. Overall, it was boring l. Pass

Photo of Heidi B.

Our boat was late in showing up but the guide was very good. Five stars for him! Be prepared though for luck of the draw if your seat mates bring loud and obnoxious young children. Too many apathetic parents who do nothing when their kids act up. This is a history tour, people! If your kids don't have enough manners, are too young, or if you're too checked out to care about how they act in public, then don't take this tour. There isn't a whole lot to see on this canal ride so it's ALL about the narration (which I could barely hear because of unsupervised young kids).

My friend rented a boat for her birthday and it was such a fun experience! We were able to bring food and cocktails. There was lots of seating a big table. It was a hot day but the boat cover made it bearable. Our captain was awesome and it was a relaxing and fun experience

Just when you thought you couldn't think of anything fun to do in RVA, Riverfront Canal Cruises saves the day! Our colleague rented out a small flat bottom boat for about 20 people, but boats can typically hold 28. He had it catered, so we had quite a spread, and the libations flowed freely. We set everything up, the group boarded and the party started! They have a kiosk at the dock where customers can buy individual tickets, adults 10$, kids and seniors 6$ and under 4 free. We saw other boats filled with tourists and locals alike soaking in the sights. Our guide, Jeremy, gave us a few safety tips and then we set out in the canal. The covered boat began to glide through the serene water thru this historic canal. This cruise is a pleasant, smooth tour thru downtown RVA. We loved seeing the old tobacco warehouses, the historic buildings, the bridges from the 1800s, the shiplocks, the beautiful foliage and scenery as we drifted down the canal. We caught a glimpse of Shiplock Park just over the bridge. Jeremy gave us details on some of the sights and answered all of our questions. The boat itself has a padded benches in the middle of the boat, chairs along the edges for nice views. It's a little tight in there, but for a short cruise it's fine. There's no restroom, so take care of business before you board. The cruises last about 45 minutes, however our friend rented our for double the time. We had a blast listening to 80's music on their Bluetooth hookup, having good food, great company and chilling on the water! For a relaxing and charming experience, this canal cruise has got you all "locked" up! I would definitely cruise with them again!

This was an enjoyable excursion on a chilly evening in October. It was a boat full of conference attendees, where relative strangers cuddled up to each other to stay warm. The boat travels slowly down the canal and out into the more open area of the water, where eventually you turn around and make the return trip. The boat's captain provided a great running narrative of all the interesting facts about the canal and it's history. I learned quite a few things about Richmond, the canal's creation, and changes over the years. This is a worthwhile excursion for any Richmond visit. It was very peaceful and relaxing.

Learn a little more about our Riverfront Canal Cruises Operations Manager, Alex Dahm!

What’s your favorite part of heading up the Riverfront Canal Cruises program?

My favorite thing about the Riverfront Canal Cruises is spreading my enthusiasm! Whether I am introducing or reacquainting people with the fun and uniqueness of the Canal and Downtown Richmond, it's always a treat to watch people realize how much awesome stuff there is to see and do here. There is an overwhelming amount of history in Richmond, beginning long before its official founding in 1737, and it’s still an exciting place to explore and experience in 2021.

What’s your favorite fun fact regarding the James River and Kanawha Canal?

My Favorite fun fact is that the Canal was conceived by George Washington to be the first and fastest connection between the Mississippi and The Chesapeake Bay. That’s one heck of a transportation planning goal in the 18th Century!

What’s your favorite part of the Riverfront Canal Cruise experience?

All things change when you look at them from different points of view. My favorite thing is how different the city looks and sounds from the water. You really notice the quick transition from the urban landscape of downtown and the natural environment of the James River when you’re on a boat on the dividing line.

Why should people take a Riverfront Canal Cruise?

Because it’s fun of course! This is an entirely new way to experience downtown Richmond and the Riverfront and its exhilarating to look at the familiar with a new lens, be that historical or just literally being on the historical canal.

If you were going to plan a day downtown for someone, what would that day look like?

First, they would would wake up at the Quirk Hotel, then start with breakfast at Perly’s. Then, they would take an RVA Bike Share bike to The Valentine and then to Tredegar St. where they could tour the American Civil War Museum. After that, they could take an hour to paddle the James River on a rental kayak from Waterfront RVA. Then, a short walk down the Riverfront Canal Walk to either Casa Del Barco or Southern Railway Taphouse for lunch. After that, a 40-minute tour of the canal with the Riverfront Canal Cruises. Maybe then a little shopping in Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom and dinner on Broad Street. Afterward, a stroll up and down Broad checking out Richmond’s amazing galleries, at a First Friday’s Art Walk. After that, I would imagine that exhaustion would set in, so back to Quirk for a great night’s rest!

If you were going to describe the Riverfront Canal Walk in 5 words, what words would you choose?

Surprising, relaxing, connecting, historical and fun.

What would your dream Riverfront Canal Walk look like in 10 years?

I would love to see a reimagined Brown’s Island that is even more of a fantastic park with world class amenities. It would also be so exciting to see a Canal Walk that is even more connective to the natural environment, the various trail systems, and the city. The Canal Walk could and should tie everything together! Also, A canal walk that has increased commercial activity without sacrificing its unique charm.

How to hear Virginia’s ‘forgotten’ history along the James River

Jessica Kronzer | [email protected]

Two Virginia men are hoping to change that.

Will Smith and Will Cash, or the Wills (as they’re often called), bring customers aboard a replica of an 18th century batteau. While the word borrows from the French term for “boat” (bateau), the vessels were mostly used in North America as freight haulers during the colonial period.

The Wills hope to share the largely forgotten history of the boatmen who built a community on the James River.

“There was a lot of people that put a lot of work in, whose stories are disappearing all the time,” Smith, 36, told WTOP. “We see ourselves as being able to carry that torch on, making sure people … are able to really take that in and understand the state as it is today.”

The river tours set out from Scottsville, Virginia, a small town just south of Charlottesville.

During the early 1700s to mid-1800s, batteaux were navigated mostly by enslaved and freedmen who transported goods, oftentimes tobacco, from Virginia’s Piedmont to the markets in Richmond.

The men would then row back up the river, hauling goods that plantation owners wouldn’t otherwise have easy access to, such as coffee, tea, molasses and sugar.

Smith and Cash are longtime friends. They co-own the James River Batteau Company , offering river cruises with light acoustic music and flavorful charcuterie in the afternoon and at sunset. The pair rows groups of customers while retelling the stories of the batteaumen who spent their time on the same passageway.

Nancy Gill, a former mayor of Scottsville and the host of the James River Podcast, is somewhat of a superfan. She’s taken three tours with the Wills.

“You don’t get from a history class or a textbook, what you get going out on the river with them,” Gill said.

‘The Cadillac experience of being out on the river’

James River batteaux are typically around 7.5 feet wide and 45 feet long — for reference, that’s a bit longer than your average telephone pole.

That skinny, narrow build makes for a relatively stable, dry cruise down the river, Smith said, when compared to a canoe or raft that run the risk of tipping over.

“This is more or less the Cadillac experience of being out on the river,” Smith said.

The two white-oak batteaux the company uses are built by hand.

“You can’t exactly just go to the batteau store these days and go pick one up,” Smith said.

The Wills are the company’s only employees. The two build the boats themselves and handle all other responsibilities like marketing the tours and checking water levels before bringing guests out on the river.

The build process takes two months.

“We are literally fashioning every piece of the boat from the ribs to the stem pieces (and) the planking ourselves,” Smith said.

They use oakum to create a watertight seam on the boats as a finishing touch.

Summertime floating down the James River

On the tours, Smith recounts the history while he poles the boat down a middle portion of the James. When they’ve strapped two wooden vessels together — which allows for more guests — Cash quietly dashes along the opposite of the batteaux, pole in hand, providing the necessary manpower to steer.

After delivering the oral history, Smith strums the guitar and sings as the day fades away, much in the same way as the batteaumen who would play music while poling up and down the very same portion of the river centuries ago, he said.

It’s picturesque. Floating down the James River in Virginia on a warm summer day, you can expect to spot fish and turtles in the crystal clear water below. Sycamore trees line the riverbanks. Occasionally, you can spot a bald eagle.

“The boat itself also folds you into the scene in the way that being on a plastic boat doesn’t,” he said. “When you see the batteau on the river, it just looks like it’s in its natural habitat and you’re there with it.”

What really catches people’s attention on the tours though, isn’t the sights, he said — it’s the quietness.

“That’s one of the things we find our guests really react to,” he said, adding that many guests come from urban areas like D.C. or Northern Virginia. “Just being out on the river and hearing nothing but birdsong all of a sudden puts people in a very relaxed state.”

Share This Gallery:

How the batteau ‘transformed’ virginia.

The batteau was invented in 1775 in Albemarle County, where Smith grew up.

“These James River batteaux completely transformed the face of Virginia,” Smith said. “There was no way for people that were living in the interior of the state to sell their product, until you had a boat capable of shipping that product to the ports of Richmond.”

That was a gamechanger.

“The men that actually worked on these boats are really what facilitated all of that economic activity that kind of grew up and created the cities and towns we live in today,” Smith said.

The boatmen transported heavy loads year-round at times in tough conditions, only stopping for ice or low water. There’s no shade on board and little protection from the rain.

At times, the journey was treacherous.

The enslaved men who piloted the boats would be gone from the plantation for months at a time. As a result of their long journeys, Smith said they were often afforded more trust and independence than people working in the fields.

“Explaining their role in the settlement of Virginia’s Piedmont is a story that we want all Virginians and anyone joining our tour to know,” Smith said of the boatmen.

A century later, batteaux found buried in mud spark curiosity

A detailed engraved illustration shows boatmen traveling along the James River in Richmond.

In the mid-1800s, batteaux were replaced by canalboats. With that, the history of the batteaumen largely vanished for more than a century.

“That changed in 1985, when several boats were discovered in downtown Richmond buried under the mud,” Smith said. “These boats sparked a resurgence and an interest in batteaux.”

The discovery of the vessels led to the first ever James River Batteau Festival later that same year. During the yearly event, groups build replica batteaux and pilot them 120 miles from Lynchburg to Richmond on a similar route as the batteaumen did 200 years ago. Hundreds of people in kayaks and canoes join on the eight-day journey with around 10 to 15 handmade batteaux.

In some spots along the river, including Scottsville, people crowd along the river when the group arrives and departs.

The festival is how Smith tipped his toe in batteau.

“My father built his first boat the year I was born in 1987,” he said. “I grew up coming down to the batteau festival and floating on the boat for a day.”

As teenagers, the Wills got involved in the festival. Smith captained his first boat in 2006, the year after he graduated from high school.

“We were the only ones on planet Earth floating down a batteau,” he said. “It was just about as unique as anything you could get involved with.”

After nearly 20 years of navigating the James, the men started giving batteau tours in 2022.

Connecting the dots in Va. history

The tour, Smith said, “connects the dots” between the role of tobacco and the settlement of the Piedmont for attendees.

Most people they come across don’t know much, if anything at all, about batteaumen. Some of that, Smith said, could be attributed to the sheer volume of Virginia history.

“I’m standing here in Scottsville, Virginia,” he said. “You drive 25 minutes up the road, Charlottesville, and there’s Monticello. Virginia, especially 17 to 1800s Virginia, just has a massive amount of history to cover.”

That’s the “generous” way to look at it, he said, but another explanation has more to do with the subjects of the stories.

“These being enslaved African Americans or freedmen of that time, we don’t have a lot of their stories that we end up celebrating as much in Virginia,” he said. “I think the fact that this was their story is one reason it’s been forgotten.”

That vision resonates with Virginians like the former mayor Gill, who was first exposed to batteaux upon moving to Scottsville in 1999 — but she said the tour gave her a more in-depth understanding of the James River’s role in Virginia’s settlement.

“It was a verbal history and almost a re-enactment of that history that brought the lessons home for me,” she said of the tour. “We really need to pay attention to our history, and what got us to where we are today. They tell that story about central Virginia so well.”

Celebrate World Fish Migration Day in Richmond with the James River Association

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Celebrate World Fish Migration Day with the James River Association on Saturday, May 4.

World Fish Migration Day is celebrated internationally every two years to honor free-flowing rivers and migratory fish.

The celebration event will be held on on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ancarrow’s Landing , located at 1200 Branders St.

The James River Association (JRA) collaborated with local environmental partners like American Rivers, James River Park System (JRPS), Resource Environmental Solutions, LLC (RES), U.S. Fish Wildlife Service (USFWS), Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and Virginia Outdoors to provide fished-themed activities and learning experiences for the whole family.

According to the organizers, the following is what you can expect at this year’s celebration:

  • A display from DWR of different fish from the James River. Those attending will be able to get close to a variety of species like migratory shad, herring, eels and more.
  • JRA and USFWS will offer a chance to view live freshwater mussels and learn about the connection between mussels and migratory fish.
  • JRPS will have a walk-up fishing program.
  • RES will enlighten guests with information about river restoration and dam removal, as well as have bug activities for children and families.
  • Virginia Outside, along with Rappahannock Adventures, will host an information booth and children’s activity with a live fish exhibit.

“World Fish Migration Day is such a unique event, and I am so happy we continue to bring it to Richmond,” said Kathy Hoverman, Senior Project Manager for RES and leader of the World Fish Migration Day planning committee. “The event highlights our local major river, the James, the fish that live in it, and the migratory species that need free flowing rivers and upstream passage to live and reproduce.”

Ohio catfish record? New Richmond 15-year-old catches monster while jug fishing

richmond riverboat

A 15-year-old new Richmond girl may have landed the biggest blue catfish ever caught in Ohio.

Jaylynn Parker, a New Richmond High School sophomore, caught the 101.11-pound fish on the Ohio River on Sunday, her family said.

Jaylynn said she's been fishing with her mom and dad, Kristen and Chuck Parker, since she was 2 or 3. Her parents both grew up fishing, too.

"It was kind of bound to happen that I was going to end up a little fishergirl," Jaylynn told The Enquirer.

She said her family has always focused on catfishing but started jugging a few years ago. Jugging or floatline fishing is when you attach a baited hook to a large float, like a milk jug, and wait for the fish to take the bait. The fish can be landed by pulling in the jug or float.

Keeping the monster fish alive overnight

Jaylynn said her dad and their family friend, Jeff Sams, helped her pull in the fish since it weighed nearly as much as her. She thanked them both for supporting her.

When they got it onshore, they knew it was big and they scrambled to get it weighed.

"We forgot our scale at home," Kristin Parker said.

They called the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife and the game wardens showed up quickly to take photos and measurements. It was 56 inches long and 39 inches around. The photos were sent to a biologist to verify the species.

But, there was a problem. To qualify for the record, the fish had to be weighed on a scale certified by a state auditor. On a Sunday afternoon, every place that had one nearby was closed.

So the Parkers packed up the fish and took it home to the lake on their property. They placed the beast in a bait tank secured to their dock.

Chuck went out several times throughout the night to make sure the fish was staying healthy and getting proper aeration.

The next morning, the family drove the fish Bethel Feed & Supply to use their scale to weight the blue catfish. The result was about 5 pounds over the previous record.

The Ohio record for a blue catfish is currently 96 pounds held by Chris Rolph, of Williamsburg, who caught the 54 1/2-inch fish in the Ohio River on June 11, 2009 . The world record is a 143-pound blue catfish measuring almost 57 inches taken from a Virginia lake in 2011.

It was a two-person job to lift the leviathan back into the water. After the fish swam away, Sams and Jaylynn leaped into the river to celebrate.

Kristen said Ohio's Record Fish Committee is meeting in the next few weeks and will likely discuss the fish then.

What's next for Jaylynn

Catching the giant blue catfish has come with some criticism. Kristin Parker said a lot of people have complained about how she caught the fish, using floats instead of a rod and reel.

She said there have been discussions about creating separate categories for jugging but added the record fish was caught by the book. The game wardens who spent hours inspecting the fish and their gear would have noted if anything was wrong, she said.

But Jaylynn does not seem bothered. She's just going to keep fishing. She said she's on the water at least five days a week, mostly going after catfish.

"You never know what you're going to get," Jaylynn said. "It could be a be a blue cat or a shovel head."

But the 15-year-old another passion. Her TikTok feed is filled with fishing, but also hair and make-up videos. She's been accepted into a cosmetology program, and her mom said she can spend hours in room doing and redoing her look.

"Then she goes fishing like that!" Kristin Parker said.

So will she keep fishing and are there even bigger catfish in the Ohio that Jaylynn's after?

"Oh yeah," she replied. "The older I get, the more joy it brings me. It's so relaxing. It brings me so much peace and happiness."

Former Miami Dolphins tackle Richmond Webb (78)

Webb Gets Second Call at Announcing Dolphins Pick

Richmond Webb was the Miami Dolphins' first-round pick in 1990

  • Author: Alain Poupart

In this story:

The NFL announced its roster of legends and celebrities who will be announcing draft selections Friday night, and Richmond Webb officially got the call to do the honors for the Miami Dolphins.

Webb is scheduled to announce the 55th overall selection in Round 2, joining former players like Jamaal Charles (Kansas City), T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Cincinnati) and Haloti Ngata (Baltimore) and celebrites like Ric Flair (Tampa Bay) in announcing Day 2 picks.

RICHMOND WEBB'S PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE ANNOUNCING A DOLPHINS PICK

This will be a second time for Webb and we can only hope it goes a tad more smoothly than the first.

The first time Webb was called to announce a Dolphins pick was 2019 when the draft was in Nashville and he was slated to announce the team's second-round selection.

Problem was that the Dolphins never made a second-round selection that year.

That was the year the Dolphins traded down in the second round, from 48th to 62nd, in a deal with the New Orleans Saints, only to send that 62nd overall selection (along with a fifth-round pick) to the Arizona Cardinals for quarterback Josh Rosen — a move that clearly didn't pan out for Miami.

For those wondering about such things, the 48th overall selection in the Dolphins' original spot became center Erik McCoy, while the Cardinals used pick 62 on wide receiver Andy Isabella.

As for Webb, he simply moved on to the third round and joined then-Dolphins running back Kenyan Drake (already scheduled) to announce the team's selection in that round, which was used on offensive lineman Michael Deiter from Wisconsin.
