MasterCraft COO Shane Chittum resigns
MasterCraft announced Friday that it has accepted the resignation of Chief Operating Officer Shane Chittum, effective April 1, 2016. Chittum, who joined the company in June 2011, is leaving to pursue another business opportunity.
MasterCraft also announced that it has promoted Larry Janosek from director of manufacturing to vice president of operations. Janosek will assume Chittum’s operational duties. The company said that it will not fill the vacated role of COO at this time.
“We’d like to thank Shane for his commitment to operational excellence and establishing best practices in manufacturing,” said Terry McNew, MasterCraft’s president and chief executive officer. “His efforts have helped transform MasterCraft into an elite, leading-edge North American manufacturer. Shane has built a very skilled team and leaves the company with a strong foundation for continued operational excellence and profitable growth.
“Furthermore, we’re excited to announce the promotion of Larry to vice president of operations. Larry has worked alongside Shane for the past four years, and has been responsible for developing, implementing and managing all areas of manufacturing. He’s a collaborative leader and was instrumental in MasterCraft securing the 2015 IndustryWeek Best Plants award. We look forward to him stepping up and assuming oversight of all operations.”
Janosek joined MasterCraft in March 2012 as the director of manufacturing and has more than 18 years of cross-functional business experience in the automotive industry. Prior to MasterCraft, he was in charge of International Automotive Components (IACNA)’s operations in Madisonville, Ky., as a plant manager and corporate director of North America, Materials Management.

At the heart of the iKon Boats brand is a commitment to innovation with a conservationist mindset. Inspired by professional anglers and fishery conservation enthusiasts, the L2 Livewell System is designed to minimize harm to fish while in captivity and protect fish resources for future generations.
Unparalleled Technology for Optimal Fish Care
The L2 Livewell System offers unparalleled technology to maintain the ideal water conditions for fish, combined with critical features in the livewell construction. Controlled via a digital LCD screen on the dash, the system includes the following features:
- Auto-maintain-fill
- Auto-circulate
- Auto-oxygenation
- Auto-inject fish additive
- Auto temperature(s)
- Addressing Delayed Mortality in Fish
Norm Latona, founder and CEO of Southeast Pond, highlights the importance of the L2 Livewell System, stating, “The fisheries community have known for years that when we introduce significant water changes to bass, especially in the hot part of the year, the delayed mortality rate can be catastrophic. This isn’t something new to the fishing community – it’s a major concern, especially in hot southern climates, but until now, we haven’t given our anglers the tools they need.”
A Win for the Ecosystem
Shane Chittum, CEO of HCB Group, proclaims the L2 Livewell System is a step in the right direction for the ecosystem, and encourages iKon Boats to work with other boat manufacturers on licensing agreements, leveraging the extraordinary accomplishments of this pursuit team.
Growing the Future of Fishing
The L2 Livewell System not only addresses the immediate concerns of anglers but also supports the future of fishing. With youth fishing on the rise and changes in bass circuit tournaments, the new L2 system connects the dots of tradition and innovation to advance the future of fishing.

Chittum Company Statement - New Management
- Add to quote
Don’t have a Chittum and will never be able to afford one, but saw this and didn’t see a thread so passing it along. Seems to have only been posted on their Facebook and LinkedIn pages. Company Statement Palm City, FL, September 18, 2023 Change is the constant. Quality is the commitment! There is new management at Chittum Skiffs. Members of the existing ownership group have assumed control. This ownership group – Chris Cooper, David Brunel and co-founder George Sawley – will not compromise on creating the stealthiest, strongest, lightest, and most effective carbon fiber skiff the world has ever seen, built by a dedicated team of professional boatbuilders, and are more enthusiastic than ever for the next step in the company’s evolution. The owners are working together to bring different skillsets into Chittum Skiffs to take the company to the next level, starting with Stephen Cunningham as our interim CEO. Stephen’s background as an entrepreneur and business-builder will guide us forward, capitalizing on the vision that our founders brought to the saltwater fishing community. ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephencunningham1/ ). In his words, “it is both an honor and a pleasure to spend time with such competent people, demonstrating commitment every day to building the best boats on the water. I have worked with a lot of founders, but the efforts of Hal Chittum and George to build a great product were incredible. And the entire Chittum Skiffs team are all in on making that happen, with the vision of the founders still in place, we look forward to engaging with all of our constituencies (customers, employees, and owners) on a regular basis.” Stephen’s mandate is to bring professional management and marketing services to Chittum Skiffs in order to take the company to the next level. We are doubling down on the goals of sustaining and improving quality, better customer service, and enhanced products that will meet and exceed the standards set by the founders. Working with the best captains in the business, and equally talented and dedicated skiff builders, there are no limits to where we can take the business, and the entire existing Chittum Skiffs team are all in on making that happen. In fact, in the past two months • More than a dozen boats have been developed and delivered to new customers, with more on the way. • In the words of the Company’s longest-serving employee, Shane Casey, “the company has been more productive in the past two months than ever before in the past seven years.” • Royce Brooker has been appointed as Operations Manager, bringing decades of boat-building experience to the organization after less than a year with the Company, and improved production solutions are already impacting the company’s production capabilities. • George Sawley has assumed the role of Chief Sales Officer, working with Stephen Ford and our guide community to engage with saltwater fishermen all over the world with an appetite for tarpon, bonefish, redfish or permit, and, in his words, “we are more committed than ever to serving top guides and great fishermen with the best damn skiff in the world”. • Shane Casey is developing an independent warranty, service and transportation service supported by The Company, that will put those efforts into the hands of and under the control of one of our longest employees, whose dedication to our clients has been unparalleled ever since he started with us, back in the earliest days of the Company. Now we are giving him a platform to serve our clients with the same dedication and even more flexibility, transporting boats and servicing them wherever they may be found” said Stephen Cunningham, “and there is more to come.” In other words, Chittum has the right people in the right place at the right time to take this world class boat company to the next level. Would love to know what actually happened... Let's kick out the guy with the last name on the boat and bring on board a CEO with zero boat manufacturing experience?... Personally, brings down the appeal of wanting to own a "Chittum". Part of wanting to own a Chittum was the history behind Hal.

Sounds like every email I’ve read when there is an org change at my job. I have 10 emails with the exact same “right place, right people, right time” verbiage. This doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzies. Quite the contrary.
Doesn't mean much without knowing ownership percentages. Someone with the highest percentage, but a few steps down the food chain is going to call the shots to protect their investment.
From the public court records the breakdown is: "Chittum (30%), Sawley (30%), Cooper (15%), Brunel (15%), and CHY (10%)."
I thought it was acquired by Broderick.
Sounds like they have also added a lot of fat ($$) to the organization as well, right?
Just head over to Martin County Clerk of the Courts if you want to eliminate the hearsay from the truth. Plenty of court documents to read through in the ongoing lawsuit.
WOW Just went to the court directly as @Rick_Hem suggested . And boy are there a lot cases open. It will make your head hurt if not a lawyer. There was a lot of money being passed around for such a sought after boat company. I know there’s a lot of capital needed. But you would think they could stand on their own feet by 2016. That could have been for the new shop possibly. I think that was about that time could account for 1.2 mil in question. I just happened to pick a file that had a interesting bit of information. It appears non of the design patents were ever transferred to the company. I would have to assume only one particular individual would have those under his name. The plaintiff was a large investor and found this to be of particular concern. And was actually suing Hal and George over it. But it seems George had no control over the financials from I was getting. That could be huge down the road 🤔
Only 2 patents I can find for Hal, ornamental design of hull and casting platform. The hull patent is 2009, so it has expired, the casting platform is 2011, so will expire next year. Does not look like there is much going on with this.
Court filing documents are very telling....doesnt look good for some of those guys.
That’s also shows you can build it yourself for $24k or so. Of course you will need the space, molds and several months worth of spare time
KimmerIII said: Well now you know why boats are so expensive. Their online info shows that is cost them $41,600 to build an Islamorada 18 and sell it for $74k making $32,400 on a boat! View attachment 249891 Click to expand...
About $65k in profit 😂
Also consider that what's not listed in that boat build listing is their fixed operating cost, rent/mortgage, keeping the lights on, office personnel/sales staff, marketing, insurance etc etc....
Also they sell a lot more other models than the flagship Legacy. That model has the most labor/expense in building. The lower priced Challenger has a whole lot less in materials, labor, cost and profits
Lol…. These guys have been over pricing these boats with fanboy support since the beginning. And still defending it now.
I will give then this their quality and design is a lot better than some of these other builders trying to charge near those prices. And they cost a whole lot less to build compared to a Chittum. So they could be actually making more per skiff than Chittum.
$8k just for lamination materials but I remember them charging an additional ~$12k to upgrade to full carbon (90%) lol. I guess the profit margins were so fat on the all carbon that’s why they stopped selling glass. Doesn’t seem to be hurting their sales so good on them.
No dog in this fight but been following as a curious outsider. It seems to me they brought in “business” people who have zero understanding what is takes to manufacture a quality boat. The CEO hit all the key talking points that they teach in the “CEO CLASS” that it seems every one goes to. No accountability, no explanation, and you want me to trust you with over 100k too build a boat in a timely manner..no thanks
Hey if you can get it get it👍🏻 Like Nike selling sneakers for over $200 that cost them $3 to make in a sweat shop. Back in the day they probably paid MJ more than they had in each pair of shoes.
I suspect we're not going to be given a reason as to why on July 13th, George Sawley, Chris Cooper and David Brunel decided to remove Hal Chittum as the manager. Nor are we going to be given a reason why George Sawley agreed to allow Chris Cooper and David Brunel serve as the new managers in exchange for giving Sawley a one year employment contract. Jaymie Chittum was real vocal on the Instagrams airing George Sawley's dirty laundry a few months ago. What does she have to say about all this?
meanwhile those prices are from 2015 or so from the filings...just some context
Right and the price was sub $50K too.
This company is going to go through some rough times ahead. Very expensive skiff, with same capabilities of some of their competitors that sell boats 30-50% less than theirs. Curious to see where they will end up in the market. There are plenty of folks that buy Lambos, and that’s their market. Hope it ends well for them, they are nice boats, it’s up to the market capitalism whether they will sustain that level of cost. Looks like they are betting it will.
Agree, I think the controversy around the brand will hurt the most. They need to explain in detail what happened and how they will move on in the future not just hit talking points. Maybe they cant due to lawyers involved but I think the sooner they explain what happened the sooner they can move forward. I think they make great looking skiffs and am by no means bashing the brand, the more high quality skiff builders there are for consumers the better it is, so I hope they can sustain this storm
I think it is very telling the person the company was named after is no longer around. Some might even say he was forced out... Oh wait, sorry, "retired". Maybe the investors found where that money was going and were not happy about it. Maybe it wasn't staying within the company. Who knows, it could have gone to buying land or building a (public records) house. cough*(florida homestead exemption law) Interesting the new guy is from Colorado. It will be very interesting to see how he gets along with the remaining "management". But don't worry everyone, there are a group of "Legends" who push boats around that say it will all be ok. Just send in your 60% deposit on that $115,000 skiff and you can be a part of this elite group too.
You are going to need more than that
They have also had their share of boat problems.. It don't look good but hey there is one born every minute.
If you browse thru the documents on the reopened lawsuit it spells it our pretty clearly. 2 guys (Cooper and Brunel) who knew Chittum back in 2015 invested over a million bucks over a couple years time to plan to build a 54’ outboard yacht. Never happened. They never got their money back. They filed suit over summer. Also named in suit was George Sawley. Now in their new LLC registration Cooper and Brunel are the sole managers of Chittum Yachts. Press release shows Sawley also a principal in company. Only ? Is: Where’s Hal Chittum?
$$$ always brings problems, especially for people great at craft and terrible at business dealings. All of these guys have been around the block before. I saw a Chiittum for the first time about 4 years ago. There were things I loved - the curved stern, the carbon fiber... but I also searched for why it was 2x the price of the boats I always wanted - a HB Pro, Waterman or Whipray. Chittum was 80k at the time when the other boats were around 40k. I couldn't see why it was that much more. I checked every part of the boat - the fit, finish, hatches, etc. Then the prices went to 90k, 100k, 120k.... Same boat, not many frills. I can buy two or three boats at that cost. They capitalized at a certain time and place like any good product. Yes, they are stealthy, but my Whipray is 5x better in stealth than my B2, which was 5x better my skiff before that. I hope they work it out, but I do not hope they continue to raise their prices because they are seen as the Gucci of the skiff world. No offense to Chittum owners out there - no disrespect at all. I know what they can do, and if you are happy, that's all that matters.

That's what I thought until I drove 6 hours and had to ask Harry to finish screwing one of the screws in that held the trim tab and the cockpit was missing a spot of whatever epoxy unfortunately everyone has some kind of issues that want the only issues I had in the year I owned it. It was an awesome design but the fit and finish was comparable with my 98 whipray.

While many skiff builders have hung their hats (and hopes) on boats coined after hallowed fishing grounds, no flats skiff has ever lived up to the name Islamorada — one of the most celebrated and certainly daunting sight fishing destinations in the world. Leave it to legendary guide, boat builder and entrepreneur Hal Chittum to go where no skiff builder has gone before, designing a flats skiff that eclipses everything that has come before it.
“Our mission was simple in description but difficult in execution – build the absolute state-of-the-art flats skiff with the best design and the latest high-tech composite materials and solve all of the problems we had tried to fix at Hells Bay.”
