Solo: On board Tankoa's 72m flagship superyacht for sale

Solo exudes beauty and brawn – but, as Cécile Gauert discovers, there is more to this 72 metre Tankoa than meets the eye. As she joins the sales market, we take a tour on board...

At first sight, nothing about Tankoa ’s new 72 metre superyacht Solo screams “green”. This is a large steel yacht powered by twin Caterpillar engines and triple generators, with no hint of an electric motor, solar set-up or exotic propulsion system – just a pair of traditional shafts driven by diesel, ending in two five-blade props. On board, meanwhile, is every conceivable luxury – six cabins, a beach club, saltwater pool, two spa pools, 18 crew and a tropical fish aquarium. Yet Italian classification society RINA has bestowed Solo with its Green Plus Platinum notation, the highest level of environmental certification.

Then you notice the yacht’s impressive range: 9,100 nautical miles at 10 knots – that’s expedition yacht territory. Vincenzo Ruggiero, Solo ’s naval architect, explains that the yacht is even more fuel efficient with her standard diesel arrangement than if she were powered by a diesel-electric system.

This is the owner’s third yacht, and second Tankoa, and he is very knowledgeable, says Albert Mcllroy, the build owner’s project manager. “Although he has very limited time to use his yacht due to his business, his passion for yachts drives him to constantly monitor the next technologies and market trends,” he says.

The owner asked for “solid comparisons between the yard’s initial straight diesel offering and a diesel-electric/hybrid solution,” adds Mcllroy. He did not have a personal preference, he just wanted to see the facts, and those told him that a traditional propulsion set-up would be the more efficient option. For a vessel of this size, “for the same speed, if you have a diesel-electric system, the consumption is about 15 per cent more”, says Ruggerio.

Results in hand, the owner and shipyard decided to carry on with the project using a hull that had been started on spec in 2010. It had been designed to be the same length as Tankoa’s previous launch, the 69 metre Suerte , but the owner wanted changes. He asked principally for more accommodation space, with the goal to make his next yacht a great option on the charter market. Francesco Paszkowski , the designer of Suerte , was once again part of the team and worked closely with the shipyard, owner and naval architect on the development of  Solo , Tankoa’s third delivered yacht.

“A couple of issues were fundamental for the whole design and layout,” says Paszkowski. “Although Solo is similar to her 69 metre sister ship, her three metres of extra length and underwater exhaust allowed a gain of volume on every deck. Both solutions enabled us to design a layout with large social spaces inside and outside.”

The hull extension, at the stern, not only helped interior volume but also had an important fringe benefit in terms of efficiency. The hull, which has an unusual shape, with a wider section amidships, also has a high length-to-beam ratio. The team left nothing to chance, and following CFD analysis, the naval architects also did extensive tank testing that helped fine-tune the placement of the exhaust vents and all appendages. The results were satisfying in terms of efficiency, but also for seakeeping.

“For stability, the boat is amazing,” says build captain Renzo Chelazzi, who took Solo to the Monaco Yacht Show in 2018. “On the way back, we had strong northerly winds, we experienced 40 knots, but we didn’t feel it,” he adds, switching on a video on his smartphone that shows her gliding effortlessly through dark water fringed with white foam. “We were going 14 knots.”

Fuel efficiency – and seakeeping – were not the only objectives, however. Strict new yachting rules around emissions and water pollution have arrived in the shape of the International Maritime Organisation’s Tier III requirements. These limit emissions and water pollution from yachts and require that most diesel-powered vessels built from 2016 (the keel laying date serving as benchmark) carry a nitrogen oxide (NOx) mitigating system in order to navigate in Emission Control Areas (ECAs). Tankoa is an ambitious yard, which from the get-go stated its goal to compete with the world’s best. Although it did not have to just yet, the yard decided to go ahead and make  Solo  one of the first Tier III compliant yachts afloat.

Working closely with Ruggiero on the engineering side, it assembled the best technology currently available to lower as much as possible its impact on the environment. A big part of this – and an obvious presence in the engine room – is a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. SCR is a chemical process that significantly reduces NOx by injecting a solution of urea into the engine exhaust. Tests showed that the system by Ecospray Technologies that Tankoa installed reduces NOx emissions by an average of 80 per cent, Chelazzi says – meeting Tier III requirements.

To deal with the exhaust from the two 230kW Northern Lights generators, Tankoa installed a Hug Engineering particulate filter and a Nauticlean converter for the third, smaller generator. A monitor allows the engineer to keep an eye on carbon dioxide levels at all times. The yacht also carries systems to guard against potential water pollution. An Erma First ballast filter system removes all pollutants before any water is released. “You cannot discharge ballast within 200 miles of the coast of another country when you’re coming from abroad. In the water, there are a lot of micromaterials you don’t want to carry from one area to another,” Chelazzi explains. The yacht is also equipped with ultrasonic antifouling in vulnerable areas, such as the sea chest, to keep barnacles at bay without the use of biocides.

“What was done here was more than was required at the time of the keel laying,” says Ruggiero. “That is the philosophy for all the boats, to build them more like small passenger ships.”

Solo may be built like a passenger ship, but she does not look like one. “Modern and timeless” as her owner wanted, she is a notable new addition to the charter fleet. The view from the very top deck, a private aerie with spacious sunpads under the mast, includes a beautiful succession of decks unfolding below, complete with a helipad that doubles as a dance floor. From the shapely spa pool, one of two on the owner’s deck , the attractive arrangement of deck furniture by Summit and Tribù, to the seawater pool wrapped in curved glass on the main deck, the design is harmonious.

Paszkowski says the beach club is a key feature. Entered from the swim platform through a large watertight glass door, it is lit up from a skylight at the bottom of the pool on the main deck. The hammam features Tuscan calacatta marble and a shower cooling guests in a hurry with water maintained to a chilly five degrees Celsius. The beautiful wood in the sauna had a previous life inside a medieval castle in Finland.

That is probably the only part of the lower deck that guests will ever see. The rest of it is dedicated to the tender garage, two-tier engine room and the spacious crew area. There is nothing lacking in the yacht’s underbelly, including a galley designed by Italian restaurant professional Marrone and run by a chef with experience in Michelin-starred restaurants, a big laundry area, cold rooms, freezers and fridges and a garage well stocked with toys, to support an active charter programme.

“ Solo ’s owner had precise ideas about how his yacht should be used,” Paszkowski says. “Large social areas outside and inside were very important to him. Privacy was also essential.” To fulfil this request, Paszkowski designed an owner’s deck that can be cut off from the rest of the guest areas with a private access code unlocking the lift or door to private stairs.

The original owner, who chose the custom colour that Awlgrip created for the hull, expressed his preference for darker hues. Created in close consultation with the owner and Margherita Casprini , the decor is both modern and masculine. Floors are in black oak, dark grey oak is on the walls, and Macassar ebony accents custom-made furniture, along with cappuccino marble from Rajasthan. Striking forest black antique marble from France covers the beach club area floor, a stairway and the owner’s bathroom.

Balancing the dark floor and walls are lighter hued fabrics, colourful art, backlit white onyx on the bars, plus amazing windows, low bulwarks and expansive outside decks drenched in sunlight. Views and transparencies were an important part of the design. Bulwarks are low and cut in places to maximise views, and frameless glass panels replace stainless-steel stanchions around the sundeck. They provide safety and tame the wind without interrupting the gaze.

After a few hours basking in the sun, heat and salted sea air, the nicely chilled darker lounges of  Solo  must feel like a delicious reprieve.

A favourite in the evening will likely be the spacious sky lounge/piano bar offering plenty of seating on low and deep sofas by Fendi Casa in front of a 90-inch 4K OLED screen above the fireplace. One of the eye-catching features in the main deck dining room, meanwhile, is an aquarium by Melik – designed to keep the water still even as the yacht moves – filled with colourful fish. The crew say they do not have to worry about maintenance much as a self-filtration system keeps the tank clean, but they have easy access to all the equipment stored in a small dedicated room off the main lobby.

One of the similarities with Suerte is found on the aft section of the main deck, described as a winter garden. Access to the main deck saloon is through two side doors, instead of the more usual big central sliding door. Here is a welcome lobby and waiting area with low seating, flowing curtains, a bar and a large planter filled with cacti. It seems like a perfect place to wait before boarding the yacht’s two Dariel tenders. But then again, with all that Solo has to offer, why would anyone want to leave?

Tankoa 50M S501 (New – 2025) Description

The TANKOA 50M S501 Superyacht is part of the successful S501 series, all built in aluminium and designed by Francesco Paszkowski, just below 500GT. This motor yacht for sale is actually the seventh hull built out from the same platform and therefore a very well proven project, boasting a very efficient hull, relatively light displacement and shallow draft, which means also very low consumption levels. This 163’ 5” yacht is now under construction and available for sale, with delivery planned by June 2025.

The timeless design is sleek and ingenious. The horizon is a luxury that the S501 gifts again and again. With its optimised twin 1599 Hp Diesel engines, this is a yacht that really moves, sailing at a maximum speed of 17 knots and cruising at 15 knots and a maximum range of 3750 nautical miles at her economical speed of 12 knots.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

• The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
• Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
• These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Then it must be the 42nd annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, which cruised into West Palm Beach this week. The city’s waterfront Downtown was transformed into a yachters’ haven, filled with ultra-luxurious yachts and cruisers and a seemingly endless range of yachting-inspired activities.

This year some 800 boats and yachts participated in the show, which is expected to lure over 55,000 total visitors along with 600 brands. In total, the four-day show is anticipated to pump over $1 billion into the economy of the Palm Beach area, which has seen both its population and popularity surge since the pandemic.

“Beyond its economic significance and standing in the industry, the Palm Beach International Boat Show holds a special place in the hearts of local residents, revered as one of the region’s must-attend events,” said Alyssa Freeman, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County (MIAPBC).

The show supports a series of satellite events such as the Winward VIP Club, with an open bar, gourmet dining and special pop-up activations. The Super Yacht Show Palm Beach at Palm Harbor was where the show’s most glamorous — and truly gargantuan — superyachts are on display. At the AquaZone, which is presented by Nautical Ventures, guests can enjoy a “show within a show” via an interactive experience featuring a wide range of water sports and cutting-edge, marine-related products.

As always, the Show delivers an exceptional array of culinary experiences, including world-class cocktails provided by sponsors such as Goslings Rum. The Show also includes a series of education seminars that appeal to visitors of all ages, including the Hook the Future’s Kids Fishing Clinics with Captain Don Dingman, who demonstrates various fishing techniques while showcasing a wide variety of fish species. Participants get a free Hook the Future x Carolina Skiff rod and reel combo.

But it’s really all about the boats. Here are five of the most unique, intriguing and eye-popping vessels on display.

The lucky charm

Few yachts at this year’s show are as jaw-dropping as Talisman C. Designed by London-based interiors aces H2 and manufactured by Turkish master yacht-builders Proteksan Turquoise, it’s currently listed for sale by British yachting firm Burgess for a cool $59.7 55 million. Spanning just over 231 feet long, it features six full-sized cabins that can sleep up to 14 guests, including a sprawling owner’s suite with its king-size bed and crystal chandelier, massive walk-in closet and grand library (which can easily be converted into an additional cabin).

Upstairs, the yacht’s sundeck features a large glass-encased Jacuzzi, sun beds and dining area under the sun or stars. A chic swim platform allows for easy access to the azure seas while the nearby aft deck area includes a fully equipped bar with club seating as well as a full-size dining area capped by a glass-threaded chandelier.

The vessel is powered by a pair of 2,447hp Caterpillar diesel engines, which provide a top speed of 18 knots, a cruising speed of 15 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles.

The emperor

Reaching just under 300 feet in length, the Nero is, without doubt, one of the most eye-catching vessels at the entire Palm Beach show. Although completely contemporarily designed and manufactured, the Nero embodies the look and aesthetic of classic boats from yachting’s golden age during the 1930s. Fully overhauled in 2021, the Nero — which is currently on the market for just under $500,000 per week via Burgess — was designed in the spirit of Corsair, a yacht launched in the 1930s that belonged to legendary Wall Street financier J.P. Morgan.

Inside, it could not be more luxurious. On the top deck is a world-class gym fitted out with equipment by Technogym, while a few steps beyond is a beauty salon, which comes with an in-house beautician and masseuse.

There are six cabins with room for 12 guests — along with an on-board Jacuzzi, pool and waterslide. Throughout, veteran yacht designer Laura Pomponi has updated and upgraded the Nero’s look, introducing a range of new handmade carpets, along with hardwood floors, new sofas and elegant art-works. Pomponi has also lent her hand to Nero’s distinctive 30-foot Corsair custom-built tender that has been refitted so guests can arrive in impeccable style.

The secret agent

As its name suggests, the 236-foot Casino Royale brings a large dose of Bond-like elegance and intrigue to West Palm Beach. Constructed by Italian master shipbuilder Tankoa in 2018 and given a top-to-bottom retrofit in 2022, Casino Royale includes six cabins for 12 passengers and has been awarded a slew of industry accolades for its innovative and forward-thinking technology and aesthetic. Nearly two dozen crewmembers tend to those lucky voyagers, which luxuriate in an on-board circular swimming pool and access the ship via a helicopter port.

The yacht’s primary suite is nothing if not grand, featuring 180-degree views from its king-size bed along with its own study and al fresco terrace with private sunbed and Jacuzzi. There are five additional guest suites — all with their own private baths. Just beyond is an open-air living layout complete with a range of bespoke contemporary furnishings across the boat’s nearly half-dozen passenger decks.

Outside the amenities are just as abundant and include an onboard beach club with a lounge, bar, sauna, terrace and hammam/shower. All are ideal locations to rest and recharge after a workout in the yacht’s wellness center. On the main deck, there’s a nearly 20-foot-long infinity pool, while that helipad can easily convert into a dance floor.

The love boat

Completely futuristic and totally cool, the 180-foot-long Come Together is the ultimate example of stealth wealth on the high seas. Completed just two years ago by the Dutch firm Amels and currently on the market for a cool $65 million, Come Together features an unmistakable architecturally styled exterior reminiscent of a city-center skyscraper.

The boat can house up to 14 guests and 13 crew members within its unmissable steel hull and an aluminum-clad super structure — all cruising at a top speed of 15.5 knots.

The boat’s expansive master suite is set within its main deck and features sprawling storage space, a dressing room as well as his and hers bathrooms. There are an additional VIP cabin, two double cabins and two further cabins that can operate as twins or doubles. Up top, there’s a fully equipped gym and Jacuzzi — while a set of Jet Skis, water skis and hover-like Seabob watercraft keep the fun going just off deck. Come Together’s unique underwater lighting system also delivers a strong dose of excitement come nighttime and is the perfect way to enjoy an after-hours swim.

Want more? Then don’t forget about the on-board wakeboards, paddleboards and snorkeling equipment. And, when the moment strikes to head from the boat to land, travel could not be easier thanks to an easy-access 30-foot Limo Tender.

The cordial cruiser

The aptly named Hospitality ticks off the right boxes when it comes to superyacht bells and whistles. This twin-engine beauty can house up to 16 passengers along with 11 crew at a maximum cruising speed of 24 knots. Built back in 2011 by Westport Yachts here in the US, Hospitality — which is currently on the market for just under $30 million — underwent a comprehensive retrofit in 2021.

Along with all of the requisite yachting toys — Jet Skis, Seabobs and paddleboards — Hospitality includes a grand private owner’s suite with its own private relaxation balcony, seven cabins along with a relaxation room that can be used as a gym or spa and meticulously designed public spaces across is handful of decks. There’s also a handy tender for quick — or, not so quick — jaunts to the shore for dining and shopping.

Hospitality mostly cruises the Caribbean to New England, making the most of Northern Hemisphere winters.
