Review of Watkins 36 CC

Basic specs..

The boat is typically equipped with a Perkins diesel engine.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 151 liters (39 US gallons, 33 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Watkins 36 CC is 1.63, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Watkins 36 CC is about 191 kg/cm, alternatively 1073 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 191 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1073 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

Maintenance

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Watkins - A good old boat.

CosmosMariner

  • Add to quote

Naval architect Ted Brewer reviewed the Watkins 29 last year in Good old Boat magazine. His conclusion was that while this boat was designed as a coastal cruiser with proper preparation and an experienced crew it could make blue water passages. This is typical of the Watkins line. While Watkins stopped making boats in 1990, there is a devoted following of Watkins owners nation wide who are buying up old Watkins models from 17' to 36 ' and restoring them to like new condition. Why? Because they're worth it! I have a 1987 Watkins 25' that we bought new at a boat show. We sailed it for 5 years on Lake Lanier, GA and the rest of the time she has been in salt water from FL to NC and performed admirably in all circumstances. She still looks boat show new in spite of hard use and weathering the 1993 Storm of the Century on the Gulf coast of Florida. We are planning to take 'Wu-Hsin' to the Bahamas next year for a 6 month cruise. Our son took his 1979 Watkins 27' 'Walkabout' to the Bahamas leaving Morehead City, NC on 11/29/05 and returning to Charleston, SC 179 days later. This included 2 crossings of the Gulf Stream the return being a 6 day non stop single handed open ocean leg directly from the Abacos to Charleston. There are two mutually supporting Watkins websites, http://watkinsowners.com/ which has a wealth of technical information about each of the Watkins lines as well as history of the company and http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/watkins/ which has an active subscribership of over 400 Watkins owners sharing maintenance, restoration and upgrade information. Both sites have excellent pictures of the boats and annual raft-ups. This year there will be the 5th Annual Watkins Owners Raft-up in the Chesapeake Bay. It is a great bunch of sailors in terrific boats.

Watkins 23 xl I just bought a Watkins 23 XL sailboat and I'm in the process of refitting her, I need a new mainsail. Could anyone tell me whether the original main had a boltrope or slugs? Thanks in advance!

Slugs for the mainsail

owner's manual? I just bought a '78 Watkins 27 that is in pretty good shape, but I can't find an owner's manual anywhere online. I found the tech specs on the watkins webpage, but was hoping someone had a copy of the original manual. I'd gladly pay someone to copy it at Kinko's and send it to me if it's not online anywhere. Any ideas? thanks! Mike

I also just bought a '83 Watkins 25 and they seem to be very solid. Slow, but well built. I plan to do a few trips from south Florida to Bahamas so we will see how it holds up.

I bought an '88 Watkins 30 about a year ago. The boat was in great shape, just needing some bright work. The one issue is rain leaks, some fro stations and fittings that are and easy fix, but the real issue is the portlights. The is no identification, but most are telling me that they look like Luwmars. My research reports Bowman as being used in the later 80s. Starting to reset the ports and need to replace gaskets. Any thoughts.

dennismenace111

Go to the Watkins Owners Yahoo group...there are alot of owners there that have already done what you are planning and can help....also look at Watkins* Owners Home Page On the left side of the page there are links to parts suppliers.

I have a '79 27' and will be replacing the two old portlights this spring, I'm going to go with the Bomars. I've also got some leaks from around the mast/mast wiring to address and possibly some of the stanchions. Plus I have to figure out why the steaming light and the spreader lights do not work and replace the rudder stuffing box.

I've also got some leaks from around the mast/mast wiring to address and possibly some of the stanchions. Plus I have to figure out why the steaming light and the spreader lights do not work and replace the rudder stuffing box.[/QUOTE] Chad, I have seen you post on a couple of sites. I recently bought a 79 Watkins 27 and will be doing some "upgrades", not a restoration but trying to make the boat safe and somewhat comfortable. I suspect I will rebed everything and change the portlights, too. I live near Oriental, NC. I will post some of my experiences probably on the Yahoo owners group. Please post your experiences as well (like which portlights you are going to use). Mike

Other than the packing, a wear item, what else can fail on a stuffing box?

It's made out of plain old steel and badly rusted.

I haven't done anything yet really :| vehicle repairs have stolen money from the repair fund. I don't expect the portlight replacement to be much hassle since it should just be removing some screws, cleaning, resealing/replacing and putting the screws back in. I plan on ordering the portlights by the end of this month. Hopefully I can have it hauled out before the end of may and then hopefully complete all of the work that needs to be done out of the water completed within two weeks. A strict timetable is important for me since I most likely will have to find somewhere to stay, I live on the boat, while it's hauled out. I need to replace some wiring but due to money constraints I'll likely end up just doing some wiring repairs where absolutely necessary.

Chad, Do you have a yard that allows liveaboards while on hard? We have one near us, maybe you have one in Elizabeth City. MDT

Hi all. I'm considering the purchase of a Watkins 33 to utilize as a liveaboard, but ideally I would like for my boat to also be capable of extended trips, say the Bahamas and points south through the Carribean (from Florida). I see Cosmomariner started this post years back with the opinion that with the right prep, blue water passages are feasible. What do you think?

I intend to sail my Watkins 27 on the sounds in NC.You should post your question on the Yahoo owners website, I am sure someone will help you out. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/watkins/info

We live in Aurora and have a 79 27.

Has anyone had experience with blistering on a Watkins sloop? I'm told that blistering is dangerous and also that blistering is not detrimental and should be expected on an older boat. Is there an answer?

oldmanmirage

Blistering is something that happens to fiberglass boats not just Watkins. I don't think I would call it dangerous, but depending on how bad it is you certainly have to deal with it. I don't recall ever hearing of a boat that had blisters so bad it would be considered unusable. If the blisters are "coin" size and hard, I would not consider it immediate. If they are larger and softer you need to deal with them. Standard technique is to grind them out and fair them back with thickened epoxy. It's common enough that it's a pretty straight-forward procedure.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
