What our Guests Say

Fantastic boat with a great crew. We spent day on water with work colleagues and had a really good day – the boat is well appointed with all the facilities you need. We did some fishing too, the crew set up rods and helped those that were new to fishing. All around a very enjoyable day on a well run boat!!!

Troy Mcnamara

Great yacht experience with White Sails, would book again with them!

The Nocturne

Excellent Yacht Charter.. They accepted our last minute booking and even provided a flexible payment scheme.. Very helpful staff to answer all of our queries.. Very clear instructions before boarding and safety briefing from Mr Freddy and MM.. A very skillful Captain, he was able to navigate the sail effortlessly.. No bumps or humps and definitely no sea-sickness too.. A wide selection of KTV songs from Mandarin oldies to current and English too.. We certainly enjoyed our time there and definitely will recommend to others too..

10/10 once in a lifetime experience!! Never had so much fun before. Boat was spotless and crew members were helpful and professional, especially as it was my first time fishing. Will definitely come again and recommend everyone I know!!

Nice yatch – spacious for party of 5, well maintained and clean, reasonably priced, good crew and service. Had a very memorable evening with family – recommend taking the addl. option of Marina View sail to enjoy more time sailing, as trip to Lazarus and back can be short.

What to prepare.

SunRise can take 18 guests while SunRider can take 16 guests, regardless of age. 1 infant is also considered as 1 guest.

All charters will be accompanied by 1 Captain and 1 crew.

There are Visitor Carparks in both One15 Marina and Marina at Keppel Bay. Please note we are tenants of both marinas so we are not able to issue complimentary tickets.

The cruises carries a basic public liability insurance for its passengers, however personal travel / cancellation / accident insurance is strongly recommended.

SunRise has a master bedroom cabin that you can use if you need to rest during the charter. SunRider unfortunately does not come with cabins.

There are no restrictions.

Mobile phone coverage is dependent on the cruise destination and your phone provider. In an emergency the yacht can also be contacted by radio. We don’t have wifi onboard, yacht charters are a great opportunity for you to detox from the screen.

All of our yachts have either 12 volt sockets or standard 3 pin plug sockets. You are more than welcome to use these sockets when you are in a marina and the boat is connected to shore power.

All of our yachts fully comply with the code of practice for small commercial vessels and meet all requirements as set down by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore! All boats are checked before and after each trip and all safety equipment is serviced on a regular basis.

There are heads (toilets) and showers onboard the yacht.

Smoking is strictly NOT permitted onboard! For safety reasons, smoking in cabins and staterooms is prohibited on our yachts.

While our yachts are both double hulled catamarans designed to be more stable on sea, if you know you are susceptible, then it is worth buying some motion sickness tablets from the pharmacy and bringing them with you.

Minimum duration of charter is 2 hours while the maximum duration is 12 hours.

We are not GST registered hence NO GST will be imposed!

Our yacht welcomes children! However, the crew cannot provide child-minding or babysitting services. Parents or accompanying adults should take care of them at all times. Life jackets will be provided for children aged 5 and above. For children below 5, we recommend bringing your own life jackets. Life jackets can be bought at Decathlon.

There is no age limit! However, one important point that we DO need to make ( and of course, this doesn’t apply just to age)—is that a yacht does need a certain amount of physical mobility. You need to be comfortable climbing over one boat to another to get to dock at times; in and out of inflatable dinghies; across a narrow gangplank from boat to shore, and so forth.

In order to secure a yacht for charter, a fully signed charter agreement must be completed. 100% charter fee must be paid to confirm a booking.

Pets are not allowed onboard for health and safety reasons, and sea travel can be extremely uncomfortable for some animals.

Yes, most other yachts do not allow outside caters, but on our yachts clients may use outside catering services. If you any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Lazarus Island

Sisters’ Islands are two of the Southern Islands in Singapore and are located to the south of the main island of Singapore. Big Sister’s Island, about 39,000 square metres (9.6 acres) in area faces the open sea, while Little Sister’s Island, about 17,000 m2 (4.2 acres) in area faces the mainland. The two islands are separated by a narrow channel which makes the islands a great spot for fishing in between the formations of land. The common sea star, blue-spot nudibranch, octopus and five-spot anemone shrimp can be spotted during low tide in that area. Legend has it that the islands were formed out of two orphaned sisters. After a pirate kidnapped the younger sister, the elder one swam after the boat and drowned. Grief stricken, the younger sister jumped into the sea and drowned too. The next day, two islands formed at the spot where they died and were henceforth known as Sisters’ Islands.

The experience was awesome!

Some of the #Activistebrands team had a wonderful day out with the ever gracious Captain Gerald and Elijah. They made the trip to Lazarus Island informative, entertaining and fun - and did it with gusto and care. It was both relaxing and exhilarating experience and we would highly recommend Sea Friends and this marvellous crew to any group looking for a good day out!

Absolutely wonderful yacht trip to Lazarus Island with Gerald and Terry! It was the first time for my family, and everyone was saying how awesome the entire experience was after we said goodbye. The photos and videos are icing on the cake, and we’re so glad we have those memories to look back on.Booking and liaising with Sea Friends was also quick and smooth. We’ll definitely reach out to you again for our next yacht trip

Our yacht adventure was amazing.

My friends and I used Sea Friends to celebrate a 30th birthday in our group and we had the perfect time. From the first time I messaged them on Whatsapp they responded quickly, were flexible with lots of different options, and answered every question we had. On the day of the charter, our captains Elijah and Dust were super patient, kind, friendly, and super helpful. We enjoyed everything about our trip and really appreciate all of the team at Sea Friends for making it a great experience. Highly recommend!

Creating magical island memories through bespoke yacht charters for all.

The epitome of unparalleled natural beauty

Brimming with an alluring spectrum of colour and cultures, Singapore is a nation where a profusion of contrasts come together in complete and utter harmony. Imbued with a medley of influences from the Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western cultures, Singapore is alluringly inviting and ripe with opportunities for invigorating adventure, unforgettable sights and astounding natural beauty.

Unlike any other city in South East Asia , the Republic of Singapore is a small island nation located between Malaysia and Indonesia . Being both a country and a capital, Singapore is made up of sixty-three islands, and has become one of the most affluent countries in the world. From gleaming Buddhist temples to the exotic array of flora and fauna, Singapore boasts a collage of diversity and a kaleidoscope of cultures.

Dubbed as the Garden City of Asia, this multicultural melting pot is saturated in chic sophistication which exudes from the glittering skyscrapers and pristine pavements. Polished, efficient and altogether safe, where traffic jams are unheard of and trains run on time, this ultra-modern destination is the ultimate urban playground.

Singapore City is simply unmissable, this bustling cosmopolitan metropolis is laced with state of the art infrastructure, designer shopping opportunities and a wealth of cuisines for luxury living in sheer opulence.

Shopping lovers will adore roaming along the decadent Orchard Road which is teeming with designer boutiques before taking to Chinatown for a spot of antique shopping. In addition to wandering amongst the beautiful orchids at the Botanic Garden, there are many stunning areas which are idyllic for tranquil walks and afternoon picnics.

By night, take to the energetic clubs for an evening of dancing or enjoy a cocktail or two on the elegant veranda of the Raffles Hotel. Reputed for being a timeless symbol of opulence, Raffles is draped in style with a chic ambience.

With food festivals held year-round, sample the mouth-watering range of Asia’s gastronomic delights with speciality dishes served on thriving market stalls. For families with children looking for fun filled adventure, visit the adventure playground of Sentosa Island which is renowned for its exhilarating rides, beaches and enticing entertainment attractions. Nature lovers will enjoy the abundance of outdoor activities from walking, cycling, rock climbing and go-karting to wake boarding and water skiing on the closely located Kallang River.  From glittering reservoirs to luscious forests, Singapore’s Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is brimming with nature and bountiful wildlife.

Singapore is a wonderland of beauty with fun filled activities and mouth-watering cuisines making for the ultimate yacht charter destination. View all luxury superyachts for charter in Singapore .

Singapore yacht charter

Southeast Asia is fast becoming a hub for yacht enthusiasts. With many world-class marinas popping up on the coasts of many of the region's metropolitan cities, it's no wonder more and more people are finding countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia as being excellent destinations for yachting. But the crown jewel of them all is Singapore, the tiny city-state that's small but mighty.

Singapore has enjoyed being a major hub for luxury yacht charters in the region. The city-state is renowned for being multiculturally diverse, having a world-class food scene, and being a melting pot of Indian, Malaysian, and Chinese identities, mixed with Western consumerism. Surrounded by a vast number of smaller islets, calm waters, and whether that's virtually sunny all-year-round, Singapore is the ideal destination for private yacht cruise excursions.

Why charter a yacht in Singapore?

A yacht charter in Singapore has become a sought after activity by astute travelers. With two world-class marinas available, the Marina at Keppel Bay, and the ONE15 Marina Sentosa, there are hundreds of different yacht rentals to choose from for any special occasion, or for a simple romantic sunset cruise. Additionally, annual yacht shows have put Singapore on the map of prominent yacht charter hubs in Southeast Asia.

You can choose from a wide variety of yachts, from a monohull that accommodates 6 people, to a massive 200-foot superyacht that can accommodate a group of 50. Whatever yachting needs you may have, you can guarantee that Singapore has it all. When it comes to exciting activities you can enjoy, there is an abundance of itineraries that allow you to yacht in style for a romantic dinner over the waters, a wedding reception anchored on a bay, or a corporate team-building activity on a beautiful, secluded island.

What are yacht charter prices in Singapore?

Prices may vary significantly for a yacht charter in Singapore. It depends on a multitude of factors such as the type of yacht you wish to rent, the size of the yacht, the number of people on board, the rental duration, yacht charter itinerary, and many other add-ons. If you wish to charter a yacht in Singapore, the lowest price could go as low as $560 for a 4-hour cruise for 6 people. A 42-feet sailing catamaran would cost you anywhere from $1,000 to $1,600 for ten people on a day cruise. At the same time, motor yachts start from $4,200 for the same group taking a midday cruise. You can charter a luxury 128-foot yacht from $10,500 to host a 50 people private event for 4 hours, including a wedding yacht charter.

When is the yachting season in Singapore?

Singapore doesn't have 4 seasons like most Western countries. It has two seasons: the wet and dry season. It is basically sunny all-year-round but certain months have more rainfall and thunderstorms than other months. Singapore's waters may experience squalls from April to November since this is the wet monsoon season, making the ideal months of December to March the best yacht charter season in the city-state. These months offer the best weather, and perfect for sailing and water sport activities. Additionally, Singapore serves as a starting point for many yacht holidays. If you are planning a yacht holiday in Malaysia or Indonesia from Singapore, their respective seasonalities should be taken into consideration.

Singapore yacht charter for a day

Offering a spectacular cityscape from the bay, Singapore yacht charter for a day is the most requested and popular. The minimum yacht rental duration is 4 hours and can go on for a full 8 hours of cruising and anchoring. Most people think that chartering a yacht in Singapore only involves cruising along the calm waters off the coast of the city-state, but it can include plenty of other activities that guests can customize. For those who want to enjoy a range of water sports, guests can request to include jet skis, stand-up paddleboards, inflatables, and kayaks.

If you're coming from the Marina at Keppel Bay, your yacht will most likely head to Sentosa before heading out to the southern islands of Kusu, St. John, and finally Lazarus Island, famous for its white sand and turquoise waters. The yacht will anchor on the island for 2 hours, where guests can disembark and explore the island, jump into the water, or spend an hour sunbathing. Before returning to the marina, guests can request for a city skyline cruise to enjoy the view of Singapore's skyline from the Marina Bay Sands area. Sunset cruises and dinner cruises are also popular in Singapore, where yachts cruise along the bay for these specific activities.

Singapore yacht charter overnight

Instead of spending a night in a 5-star hotel, why not treat yourself and your loved ones to an overnight yacht charter? A 24-hour yacht charter can take you around the smaller islets for the day and then anchor on Lazarus Island's bay for the night. Most yachts in Singapore feature several cabins and full amenities, with the crew offering VIP services from beginning to end. All food, beverages, and activities are included in the yacht charter, making an overnight cruise a terrific option to experience Singapore.

Singapore yacht charter for a week

For the ultimate yacht vacation, guests can also charter a yacht for a full-week rental, hopping to different nearby islands, and enjoying the rest of what the region has to offer. Also known as a live-aboard experience, luxury yacht holidays last for several days and usually end at different locations. Take your pick from cruising from a Singapore marina and waking up to the coast of Thailand. Or maybe you want to visit Indonesia, explore the islands of Batam and Bintan, and cruise across the Riau Islands? Or perhaps you fancy a private yacht cruise to Tioman Island in Malaysia? A live-aboard yacht charter is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for guests who choose to enjoy an adventure-packed, unique, and genuinely spectacular yacht holiday.

Wedding yacht charter in Singapore

Weddings are magical on their own, but if you wish to enjoy a wedding in Singapore truly, nothing beats a wedding on a yacht. Imagine exchanging vows with the Singapore harbor as your background, cruising on a yacht over calm waters, and enjoying the warm breeze of the sea. Once the ceremony is done, you and your guests can sail through the beautiful coast, creating a wedding ambiance, unlike any other. And to top it all off, end your wedding day with a sunset experience as you witness the Singapore skyline slowly lighting up to greet the night.

Corporate yacht charter in Singapore

Nothing impresses a potential client or investor than a private yacht cruise. Take advantage of what Singapore has to offer and take your client on an exciting yacht charter, complete with VIP treatment, and an experience they will never forget. A cruise will also take away the formalities of a business meeting, as you don smart casual attire rather than stuffy formal wear. Comfort and rapport are key when impressing your potential clients and investors, and nothing else says - You're Important - than a cruise on a luxury yacht.

Corporate parties, team-building activities, and company celebrations are also best enjoyed on a yacht charter. Singapore is a metropolitan with a unique identity of being a tropical island at the same time. Take advantage of both worlds with a much-deserved yacht charter in Singapore for your loved ones, family, clients, and colleagues.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

Vessels Belonging to Owner of Baltimore Ship Had Been Cited for Labor Violations

The vessels had underpaid crews and kept workers onboard for months beyond their contracts, according to an Australian regulator.

A large blue cargo ship with collapsed portions of the Francis Scott Key Bridge atop it.

  • Published March 26, 2024 Updated March 27, 2024, 6:02 a.m. ET

Ships belonging to the company whose container vessel crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday have been cited in recent years for labor violations, which include underpaying ship crews and holding crew members onboard for months past their contracts, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

In 2021, the authority detained the Western Callao, another ship formerly owned by the company, the Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd., after it found that the management was in arrears paying 13 crew members and had kept them on the ship for more than 12 months, well beyond their nine-month contracts. In 2020, an inspection of the same ship in Australia found that eight sailors had been aboard it for more than 11 months.

Another ship owned by Grace Ocean, the Furness Southern Cross, had 10 seafarers aboard for more than 14 months. The infractions were “serious and shameful” violations of an international convention on maritime labor, Michael Drake, the executive director of operations for the authority, said at the time, in October 2021.

“This type of behavior is unethical and in complete contravention to the Maritime Labor Convention,” Mr. Drake said. “The international conventions that protect seafarers’ rights are very clear.”

Any factors about the crew of the Dali, the Grace-owned container ship that crashed into the Key Bridge, including fatigue, will likely be among the many items the National Transportation Safety Board examines as it looks for the cause or causes of the crash.

Grace Ocean owns 55 ships, according to Equasis , a public database of ship information. While global companies such as Maersk charter the vessels, the owners and the ship managers are generally responsible for managing the crew and maintaining the ships. The management company for the Dali, Synergy Marine, was not the company managing the two vessels cited by Australia.

The extremely opaque nature of global ship-owning makes finding the ultimate owners and holding them accountable for any violations difficult. According to Singapore company records, Grace Ocean is owned by the British Virgin Islands-based Grace Ocean Investment Limited. Lloyds List, which first reported Grace Ocean’s infractions in 2021, reported that Grace Ocean Investment is based in Hong Kong. But the company matching the name and address in Lloyd’s database dissolved in 2015, according to Hong Kong company records.

The Singapore company has four directors — two Filipino citizens, a Singaporean and a Japanese person — with all listing addresses in Singapore, records show.

Alexandra Wrage, the president and founder of Trace, a group focused on anti-bribery, compliance and good governance, said that ship ownership structures were designed to maximize opacity and minimize accountability.

“There are some good actors in this space, but shipping is the Wild West from a compliance and accountability perspective,” Ms. Wrage said. “And when compliance and accountability aren’t priorities, issues like environmental standards, labor practices and health and safety often aren’t either.”

The Dali had 22 crew members from India onboard, according to a statement from Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine. None were injured.

An inspection of the Dali last year at a port in Chile found that the vessel had a deficiency related to “propulsion and auxiliary machinery.” The inspection, conducted on June 27 at the port of San Antonio, specified that the problem concerned gauges and thermometers.

The Dali has had 27 inspections since 2015, according to Equasis. The only other deficiency, a damaged hull “impairing seaworthiness,” was found in 2016, at the port of Antwerp, in Belgium. The vessel hit a berth at the port that year. A spokesman representing Grace Ocean and Synergy did not immediately have a comment on the labor violations or on the deficiency reported last year.

Crew member on DALI said everyone on board was safe hours after bridge collapse, official says

From CNN’s Amy Simonson

A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.

Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning.

He said there were 22 members aboard the ship from India who were setting sail earlier Tuesday morning and were heading toward Sri Lanka.

“I was able to reach out to a crew member very early this morning around 5:30 (a.m. ET) or 6 (a.m. ET) and get a message to them asking if they were OK,” he said. “That crew member responded within just a few minutes advising that the crew was safe, and everybody that [was] on board was safe.”

Middleton was told by the ship's captain Monday that the vessel was going to take a longer route to avoid risks along the Yemen coast.

“When I was out with the captain yesterday, we were talking while we were driving, and he advised that they were sailing down and around the tip of South Africa in order to avoid the incidents that are going on off the Yemen coast, and it was a safer way to go,” he said.

Middleton said the  Apostleship of the Sea  is a ministry to seafarers with members that spend time in the port and on the vessels as a friendly face to the seafarers that visit the Port of Baltimore, “taking care of their needs to make sure that they're reminded of their God-given human dignity when they're here in Baltimore.”

Search operation ends in "heartbreaking conclusion," Maryland governor says. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday, March 26.

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day."

Late Tuesday, it was discovered that two of the construction workers who went missing after the bridge collapsed were from Guatemala , the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late Tuesday.

Here's what you should know to get up to speed:

  • The victims: Eight people were on the bridge  when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and was later  discharged , fire official and the medical center said.
  • The incident: Video shows the moment the entire bridge structure falls into the water, as the ship hits one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the  ships lights flickered  and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop incoming traffic from going onto the bridge.
  • Response efforts: Earlier, dive teams from various state and local agencies were brought in to assist in search-and-rescue operations, according to Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr.. The mission started with 50 personnel and continued to grow before the Coast Guard announced Tuesday evening that it was suspending its active search-and-rescue operation and transitioning to a "different phase."
  • The investigation: Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into  how the bridge was built  and investigate the structure itself. It will "take time to dig through" whether the bridge had ever been  flagged for any safety deficiencies , NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
  • Rebuilding the bridge: US Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the path to rebuilding the bridge will be "long and expensive." Senior White House adviser Tom Perez told reporters Tuesday “it’s too early” to tell how long it will take to rebuild the bridge. President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to bear the full cost of rebuilding the collapsed bridge, noting that it will not wait for the company who owns the container ship DALI to shoulder the costs. Funding could come from the Federal Highway Administration as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but it may require additional funding from Congress.

2 of the missing construction workers from bridge collapse were from Guatemala, foreign ministry says

From CNN’s Allison Gordon, Flora Charner and Amy Simonson

Two of the construction workers missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore were from Guatemala, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Tuesday.

Those missing included a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén. The other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula, the statement said.

The ministry said both were part of a work team “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”

The statement did not name the two people missing, but it said the country’s consul general in Maryland “went to the area where the families of those affected are located,” where he hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both missing people.

The consulate   also issued a statement Tuesday saying its consul general in Maryland "remains in contact with local authorities," and also confirmed that two of those missing "were of Guatemalan origin.”

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

State and federal officials have not released information about the identities of any of the six missing workers.

Underwater mapping of bridge collapse area to begin Wednesday, Baltimore fire chief says

From CNN's Jennifer Henderson

Search operations near the Key Bridge collapse have shut down for the night due to dangerous conditions, but the process of underwater mapping with many local, state and federal dive teams will begin Wednesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday night.

Wallace said the portion of the Patapsco River is “tidal influenced, so it goes through tide cycles just like the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay does.”

The water depths in the area under the bridge vary from 40 feet to more than 60 feet, Wallace said. The deeper the divers go, the colder the temperatures they encounter, and the visibility is zero, he added.

Wallace said when crews arrived Tuesday morning, the surface water temperatures of the Patapsco River were about 47 degrees with an air temperature of 44-45 degrees.

Here's what you should know about the historic Francis Scott Key Bridge

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday after a massive container ship lost power and crashed into the iconic Baltimore bridge, sending people and vehicles into the frigid Patapsco River.

Six people, believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead and the Coast Guard has ended its active search and rescue mission.

Here's what you should know about the historic bridge:

  • How old?: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also referred to as just the Key Bridge, opened to traffic in March 1977 and is the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA.) It crosses over the 50-foot-deep Patapsco River, where former US attorney Francis Scott Key found inspiration to write the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, the MDTA says.
  • How long?: The bridge was 1.6 miles long when standing, MDTA reports.
  • Traffic volume: More than 30,000 people commuted daily on the bridge, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
  • How much did it cost?: The bridge cost $60.3 million to build, MDTA says. Since its collapse, President Joe Biden said he’s committed to helping rebuild the bridge as soon as possible.
  • About the port: Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. It handled a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion, in 2023. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. Dali is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The ship is about 984 feet long , according to MarineTraffic data. That’s the length of almost three football fields.

Baltimore woman says bridge collapse was "like a piece of family dissolved"

From CNN's Kit Maher

For longtime Baltimore resident, Ceely, who opted not to share her last name, seeing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  Tuesday was deeply personal.

“I was very heavy-hearted,” Ceely told CNN. “Very tearful, thinking about the families whose loved ones may be in the water and just remembering when the bridge was constructed, and it was just like a piece of family dissolved.”

Ceely was at a prayer group Tuesday morning when she saw the news. She recalled being afraid when she first crossed the bridge while in Ford Maverick in 1975, but grew to like it because it saved time on the road.

“It was a main artery just like a blood line. It was a main artery to the other side of town. It was awesome. It beat going through the city all the time,” she said.

Elder Rashad A. Singletary , a senior pastor who led Tuesday night’s vigil at Mt. Olive Baptist Church told CNN that many church members watched the bridge's construction.

"It’s a part of the community. A lot of our individuals in our congregation drive that bridge to go to work, and so now it’s really a life changing moment,” he said.

"Heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," Maryland governor says as Coast Guard ended search operation

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

People look out toward the Francis Scott Key Bridge following its collapse in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26.

More than 18 hours after the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it was a heartbreaking conclusion after the Coast Guard ended the search-and-rescue operation for the six people who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

It's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," he said.

"We put every single asset possible — air, land and sea" to find the missing people, he told reporters on Tuesday evening. "While even though we're moving on now to a recovery mission, we're still fully committed to making sure that we're going to use every single asset to now bring a sense of closure to the families," the governor added.

As the sun sets in Baltimore, six people are presumed dead after a major bridge collapsed overnight Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. The Francis Scott Key Bridge came down around 1:30 a.m. ET after a cargo ship collided with it.

The Coast Guard said it has ended its active search-and-rescue operation for the missing construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

  • What we know: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and has been discharged . The Coast Guard has been searching for six other people. But, around 7:30 p.m. ET, the Coast Guard said it has transitioned to a “different phase” of operation, now it did “not believe we are going to find any of these individuals alive,” Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. The vessel is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, a State Department spokesperson said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the collapse. A team of 24 experts will dig into nautical operations, vessel operations, safety history records, owners, operators, company policy and any safety management systems or programs, said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. A voyage data recorder will be critical to the investigation, she added.
  • Vehicles on the bridge: Officials are also working to verify the numbers of how many cars and people were on the bridge, Homendy said. Gov. Wes Moore said the quick work of authorities in closing the bridge had saved lives . Radio traffic captured how authorities stopped traffic and worked to clear the bridge seconds before the impact . Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said there is a “ distinct possibility ” more vehicles were on the bridge, but authorities have not found any evidence to support that.
  • Looking ahead: NTSB will look into how the bridge was built and investigate the structure itself, including if it was flagged for any safety deficiencies , Homendy said. The federal government has also directed its resources to help with search and rescue, to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge, Vice President Kamala Harris said . Earlier, President Joe Biden said t he federal government will pay to fix the bridge.
  • The economy: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned the collapse will have a serious impact on supply chains . Until the channel is reopened, ships will likely already be changing course for other East Coast ports. Ocean carriers are already being diverted from the Port of Baltimore, where the bridge collapsed, to the Port of Virginia to “keep trade moving."

Who owns the ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore?

The collapse of  Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday after being struck by a cargo ship has raised questions about who owns and manages the ship, as well as on the potential impact on one the busiest ports in the U.S.

Called the Dali, the 948-foot vessel that hit the bridge is managed by Synergy Marine Group, a Singapore-based company with over 660 ships under management around the world, according to its website . The group said the ship was operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group and chartered by Danish shipping giant Maersk at the time of the incident, which sent vehicles and people tumbling into the Patapsco River.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," Maersk said in a statement to CBS News Tuesday, in which it also confirmed the ship was carrying cargo for Maersk customers. The company had no crew or personnel aboard the ship.

The Dali, which can carry up to 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, was carrying nearly 4,700 containers at the time of the collision. It was operated by a 22-person, Indian crew. It was not immediately clear what kind of cargo the ship was carrying.

Who owns and manages the Dali?

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean Private, a Singapore-based company that provides water transportation services. The ship was chartered by Danish container shipping company Maersk at the time of the collision.

Synergy Marine, founded in 2006, provides a range of ship management services, including managing ships' technical components and their crews and overseeing safety, according to S&P Capital IQ. Its parent company, Unity Group Holdings International, an investment holding company, was founded in 2008 and is based in Hong Kong.

Where was the ship headed?

The outbound ship had left Baltimore and was headed for Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, Synergy Marine Group said in a  press release .

How busy is the Port of Baltimore?

In 2023, the Port of Baltimore handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, according  to the office of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. The port is also a significant provider of local jobs.

The top port in the U.S. for sugar and gypsum imports, it is the ninth busiest U.S. port by the total volume and value of foreign cargo handled. All vessel traffic into and out of the facility is currently suspended, although the port remains open and trucks continue to be processed within the its terminals, according to a statement release by Port of Baltimore officials.

What is the potential local economic impact?

Directly, the port supports 15,300 jobs, while another 140,000 in the area are related to port activities. The jobs provide a combined $3.3 billion in personal income, according to a CBS News report . The Port of Baltimore said Tuesday that it is unclear how long ship traffic will be suspended.

The disaster also caused chaos for local drivers. The Maryland Transportation Authority said all lanes were closed in both directions on I-695, with traffic being detoured to I-95 and I-895.

How could the bridge collapse affect consumers and businesses?

Experts say the bridge collapse could cause significant supply chain disruptions.

"While Baltimore is not one of the largest U.S. East Coast ports, it still imports and exports more than 1 million containers each year, so there is the potential for this to cause significant disruption to supply chains," Emily Stausbøll, a market analyst at Xeneta, an ocean and air freight analytics platform, said in a statement.

She added that freight services from Asia to the East Coast in the U.S. have already been hampered by drought in the Panama Canal, as well as risks related to conflict in the Red Sea. Nearby ports, including those in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, will be relied on to handle more shipments if Baltimore remains inaccessible.

Whether ocean freight shipping rates will rise dramatically, potentially affecting consumers as retailers pass along higher costs, will depend on how much extra capacity the alternate ports can handle, Stausbøll said. "However, there is only so much port capacity available and this will leave supply chains vulnerable to any further pressure."

Marty Durbin, senior vice president of policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said that the bridge is a critical connector of "people, businesses, and communities."

"Unfortunately, its prolonged closure will likely disrupt commercial activities and supply chains that rely on the bridge and Port of Baltimore each day," he said in a statement.

What other industries could be affected?

Trucking companies could be severely affected by the disaster.

"Aside from the obvious tragedy, this incident will have significant and long-lasting impacts on the region," American Trucking Associations spokesperson Jessica Gail said, calling Key Bridge and Baltimore's port "critical components'' of the nation's infrastructure.

Gail noted that 1.3 million trucks cross the bridge every year — 3,600 a day. Trucks that carry hazardous materials will now have to make 30 miles of detours around Baltimore because they are prohibited from using the city's tunnels, she said, adding to delays and increasing fuel costs.

"Time-wise, it's going to hurt us a lot," added Russell Brehm, the terminal manager in Baltimore for Lee Transport, which trucks hazardous materials such as petroleum products and chemicals. The loss of the bridge will double to two hours the time it takes Lee to get loads from its terminal in Baltimore's Curtis Bay to the BJ's gasoline station in the waterfront neighborhood of Canton, he estimated.

Cruise operators are also being affected. A Carnival cruise ship that set off Sunday for the Bahamas had been scheduled to return to Baltimore on March 31. Carnival said Tuesday it is "currently evaluating options for Carnival Legend's scheduled return on Sunday." The company also has cruises scheduled to set sail from Baltimore through the summer.

Norwegian Cruise Line last year introduced new routes departing from the Port of Baltimore. Its sailings are scheduled for late this year. The company said the Key Bridge collapse doesn't immediately require it to reroute any ships.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Biden said Tuesday that the federal government, with congressional support, would pay to rebuild the bridge.

"We're going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge," Biden said in comments from the White House. "And I expect the Congress to support my effort. This is going take some time. The people of Baltimore can count on us though, to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."
