How Do We Get These Scores?

Our Rating System

UPDATE FOR 2022: Our former “Atmosphere” and “Theme” categories have now been combined and renamed “Immersion.” Our intent with this is to give more appropriate credit to attractions that have shown a clear focus on achieving and maintaining better customer experiences (both inside and outside the attractions) and developing creative storylines.

Each of the category scores in this review are calculated using a weighted average of several questions that we rate on a scale of 1 to 10.

The following breakdown explains what these scores typically mean. All of our Teams use this as a reference for providing accurate ratings:

10: “Peak Performance” This score is treated as if it has a chastity belt on it. “10’s” are reserved for the best of the best; those that we feel could not possibly improve on what they’re doing.

9: “Innovative and Groundbreaking” It rocked! Nearly everything seemed to go as planned and it was one of the best we’ve ever seen! These guys are leaders in the industry, and attractions like this are truly hard to come by.

8: “Solid” A high score on our scale. They had a good handle on it and, overall, they knew how to use it well. Most attractions can learn from what these guys are doing.

6 to 7: “Good” We could tell that a good effort was made. However, we’ve seen this done much better at other places, or can detect areas where significant improvements can be made. This is about the top end of what we’d call “Family Friendly.”

5: “Average / Fair” Compared to the competition, they weren’t the best, but definitely not the worst. Scares and Special Effects in this range are usually considered “Family Friendly.”

3 to 4: “Below Average” We could see that a clear attempt was made, but most other professional attractions are doing a much better job at this.

1 to 2: “Poor” It appeared that very little time, thought or effort was contributed to this aspect.

0 (Zero): “Non-Existent” No apparent effort was made to make this a significant contributor to the attraction.

Afterword: This rating system is standardized across all of The Scare Factor’s official haunt review teams. However, keep in mind there will always be minor differences between Teams, as we all have varying levels of experience. Regardless, we do our best to remain true to our core values, which is to promote all haunted attractions! Perhaps the biggest thing to remember is: sometimes the score – in and of itself – doesn’t tell the whole story about an attraction’s merits. This is why we provide detailed explanations for each category… to help you better understand how and why we chose the score/s that we did. We do our best to not let feelings or emotions rule our judgement, while also viewing the attraction through the lens of the typical haunt-goer. But, because all reviews with ratings are inherently subjective, this is nearly impossible to completely prevent. Though, when in doubt, we tend to give slightly lower scores than our original “gut feelings” to account for this, and also give the attraction more room to improve over time. We also do our best to be fair and consistent across all of the haunts that we review. We know that you’ll be looking at these scores and comparing them to other attractions, so we hope this review helps you out in that aspect. Do you have some feedback about our review system? Oh Yeah! The Haunted Labyrinth is BACK for its 37th season in Cranston, Rhode Island. It is quite possibly the longest-running official haunted attraction in New England.

Every year I’m beyond proud of how much Haunted Labyrinth dedicates their time to bring us a brand new show. Nothing against the vast majority of attractions that put massive amounts of work into their scenes and leave them there for a few years, deservedly so. Haunted Labyrinth is one of the only haunts that I have ever been to that not only changes all of their scenes every single year but also keeps the entire attraction centered around a singular theme. Last year in 2020, they presented a story from outer space and called it ‘Space Station 13’. It involved a fun horror story where the paying customer played the role of an existing or potential investor onboard an experimental laboratory space station. The tour of the facility is cut short when the station gets attacked by blood-thirsty aliens or mutated creatures. With you being the last surviving member of your party, you had to find your way to the escape pods before getting eaten alive or infected or both!

They try their absolute best every year to bring us this kind of energy for the haunt season. I haven’t missed a season in 10 years. If only I had discovered them sooner. I would have loved to know what crazy ideas came before 2011.

This year in 2021 Haunted Labyrinth brings us ‘Midnight Masquerade.’ The eerie tale of a journey through a glorious haunted mansion on the night of a lavishing masquerade ball. The only question you need to answer is’ Will you attend?

(20% of Cast Score) Did it seem like there were enough actors?: 7.8

(30% of Cast Score) How creative, believable and convincing were the actors?: 5.2

(20% of Cast Score) How interactive were the actors (verbally and physically)?: 5.1

(15% of Cast Score) How creatively & appropriately did they use dialogue?: 6.5

(15% of Cast Score) Was there a good variety of characters?: 7

Not only is the Haunted Labyrinth the longest-running haunt in New England, but it probably gets the award for the youngest actors every year as well. Since the attraction is owned and run by a Christian Youth Center, plenty of their young members can’t wait till this time of the year to suit up every weekend and have a blast scaring the thousands of people that come through. In my 10 years of attending Haunted Labyrinth, I can honestly say I might have seen less than 10 actors over the age of 18, or at least that’s what it has felt like. This is not necessarily a bad thing since I do have to consider the fact that this is a Christian Youth Center and everything they do is for the children who are having a great time doing something they love.

With that being said, I shouldn’t shy away from the truth that the acting at this attraction is not their strongest suit. The majority of the cast relies heavily on the, for lack of an official name, ‘freeze and startle’ scare tactic where the actor will pretend to be a prop until we get close enough and suddenly nudge towards us a little bit with not so much as a scream but more of a short yell.

There is a good handful of returning actors and actresses who do quite a good job actually. In fact, the characters that introduced me to the attraction usually have more dialogue than most characters I bump into at any other haunt. This year we were welcomed into the masquerade ball by ‘The Dutchess’. After a few technical difficulties, she frantically tried to fix something and on the spot, she quickly escorted us into the beginning of the house.

I will admit that I enjoyed some better attempts at scares this year compared to previous years. We received some great screamers and some actual stalkers following us. Even the last character of the night did a great job at convincing us that ‘(something) is a trap’ instead of the traditional ‘freeze and startle.’ But the reality is that everyone is having fun and it’s all volunteer time. When I can feel that the people genuinely like doing what they do, it has a great effect on how much I will enjoy my time with them.

(15% of Costuming Score) How effectively did they use masks (if used)?: 5.2

(25% of Costuming Score) How appropriate were the costumes for their scene/s & theme/s?: 7.8

The pandemic year forced all actors to wear a face mask. The majority of the cast usually wears a Halloween mask of some sort practically every year that I’ve attended. Last year it seemed that they had all worn a face mask underneath their masks, and it’s not much different this year. I may have come across two or three actors wearing only the face mask and a little touch of makeup. Just some blackened eyes, nothing crazy.

It feels like gears might be moving in the right direction with the actual costuming this year. Most years I find costumes and masks not fitting the theme too well, like a clown mask on a spaceship or a hockey mask in an old western saloon. This year I was pleased to see that the majority of the costuming was actually relative to the scene the actors were in. The kitchen lady was wearing an apron, the scientist was in a lab coat, the piano player was in a fancy suit, and obviously, the lovely hostess was in a velvet dress and masquerade mask. I found that this year was one of the more appropriately attire-conscious years I’ve attended in a while.

Some of the most friendly people I’ve ever met are part of the haunt industry and the crew over at Haunted Labyrinth is no exception. If anything they are probably more friendly and helpful than most. Despite the spooky exterior, I’m always greeted with a smile or a handshake and a friendly ‘Hi there! Would you like to see our haunted house?’ Although I may be attending the show in search of some scares, this hospitality always puts a smile on my face.

This attraction is almost impossible to miss. The crosswalk from the small parking area to the entrance of the Youth Center is patrolled by police with their cruiser lights on. The street can get rather busy as it’s one of the main routes through the city. I’m glad to have an officer helping us and others safely cross the road. Speaking of safety, there is a short staircase leading up to the official beginning of the haunt and a short one going down to exit the haunt. Both staircases have someone constantly watching to make sure nobody trips and falls.

Every year I ask them when they officially start talks on the current year’s design. Consistently they tell me, ‘During the middle of last season’ which is quite honestly what I hear from a lot of haunted attraction owners. The ideas for every season begin turning well before the current season officially ends. But the official meeting for the next season begins in February and the designing and planning usually last till July when they start building the haunt. Haunt build lasts right up to the opening night. That’s almost 3 months of building all in their off time, all volunteered.

The Haunted Labyrinth has become known for its infamous haunted house faade that covers the front entrance to the building. Flashing lights in the windows give off the lightning effect, glowing lanterns, broken boards, all kinds of typical haunted house decor make this place impossible not to realize this is a haunted house. Even a hand-made, old-timey black hearse rests outside of the ticket booth with its own flame illusion lanterns.

The waiting line for Haunted Labyrinth is usually decorated as well. Sometimes they had carved out plywood headstones. This year they went with the simple dark brown picket fence. Most years that I have attended they have a little snack and merch shack on the side of the building where we waited. Sometimes they even have a DJ with their own lighting effects and stage making the haunt even more impossible to miss.

The Haunted Labyrinth has quite an old-school feel to it when it comes to special effects and it’s one of the many things that I love about them. I imagine these effects are the ones I may have come across in the 70’s or 80’s that were so simple yet so effective. It’s refreshing and somewhat nostalgic to see some of these effects when I walk through. They aren’t effects that I suspect to see because I don’t encounter them in other haunts and it’s brand new effects every year so it’s always a surprise! I can say that this is definitely Haunted Labyrinth’s strongest characteristic.

Fans of the Labyrinth will agree that ‘Labyrinth’ isn’t just a spooky name they take for granted. This attraction does an amazing job redesigning the floor plan every year into what could be identified as a ‘Labyrinth.’ We’ve had to choose the right door in a room of doors, find which bookshelf is actually a secret door, crawl through a fireplace or two, even wait for an entire wall to almost crush us to death before realizing that wall actually IS the door! Naturally, this type of attraction leads guests to pushing and grabbing many different things trying to escape to the next room. Although there was a little bit of figuring our way out last year, the majority of the haunt had to become a little more obvious last year due to the pandemic. They even gave us gloves to go into the attraction because we still would have to push and grab a few things. Well, this year wasn’t too much different other than the gloves. They did have a few surprises in store for us but the reality is they are still trying to do their part to limit the amount of contact between guests, actors, and sets.

But what they had to take away in unique exit points they made up with old school and unique scare effects. We walked past what I think was a poker table only to watch the thing suddenly come to life! What we thought was just some type of life-sized doll made out of rolled-up sheets was laying in a bed not looking like it was capable of doing much damage. The thing jumped out of the bed and almost landed on the side of my face! I think it was honestly more the sound that got me. I’m more used to hearing air compressors hiss and pop before any moving parts start to happen. This little jump scare was worked with a simple wire or rope on a pulley system. The quick ‘zip’ sound accompanying the sudden jump of this weird doll thing was incredibly unexpected to me.

(50% of Theme Score) How well was the theme carried throughout the attraction/s?: 8.8

(20% of Theme Score) How well does their location authenticate the theme?: 7.1

The changing of the theme every year is the thing that I remember most about Haunted Labyrinth. Many haunts will change only certain areas of their attraction or add a new set here and there or pretty much not change their attraction for many years. Haunted Labyrinth is the only attraction I’ve ever been to that loves to completely redo their haunt every single year and practically start from scratch with a new theme. Granted the haunt takes up the entire space of a youth center’s gym, so it has to be disassembled every year anyway. But even the few haunts that I know of that need to disassemble every year don’t put in the effort to redesign when they have to put it back up.

Remembering the themes since I have been attending I can recall them making a dark and twisted fairy tales theme, Alice in Wonderland, a western ghost town, a carnival, a child’s nightmares, a college campus, a camp, a zombie apocalypse, even a space station! It’s been a while since they have done just a good old classic Haunted Mansion theme. And what is a Haunted Mansion without a spooky masquerade party? So Haunted Labyrinth brings us ‘Midnight Masquerade’ for their 2021 season. It’s an interactive journey where the paying guest gets invited to the most lavish of parties only to find that this is no party at all. We had to find our way through the haunted house dodging monsters and disfigured creatures and outright mean and nasty residents to finally reach the enchanted ballroom. But we also find that we are the only guests to arrive and the further we go into the house the further we might be falling into a trap!

By far the creepiest thing about Haunted Labyrinth is that I never know what I’m about to walk into. The exit and entry points from one room to the next are not always obvious, so naturally, I think to myself a lot ‘Did I choose the right door?’ and more importantly ‘Is there something behind this door that isn’t behind that other door?!’ And like I mentioned in the Theme category, sometimes the little unsuspected sounds that I’m not used to hearing in a haunt are the things that give me a startle. Also, obviously the fact that I will never return to the same show year after year. So even though Haunted Labyrinth doesn’t compete with some of these over-the-top, grotesque, in-your-face haunts I can always count on them to give me something unpredictable every year. Now, that’s something that I find extremely rare in this industry.

(30% of E&V Score) How appropriate is/are the ticket price/s?: 9.6

(15% of E&V Score) Have they effectively used their available space?: 9.8

Haunted Labyrinth is only $12 a ticket and $13 if you purchase them online. Which is probably the cheapest ticket you’ll find in New England for a full-blown haunted attraction, don’t quote me on that but I’m willing to bet that’s pretty accurate. The Labyrinth had to decrease in length last year due to the pandemic and it seems that this year was no different. While I remember spending an average of twelve minutes to get through the whole haunt, it went down to seven last year and remains seven this year too. The price is still great for what we get; unique scares and a great night with friendly people who love what they are doing.

This fundraiser event supports the Rejoice in Hope Youth Center and other churches and youth centers all over the country! It provides the materials and time dedicated to helping kids develop the skills and well-being to become the best they can be. Even the haunt itself is a way for the youth to learn valuable skills in building and customer service and community.

They came out with a new version of their tickets this year! It was only last year when they finally got a professional-style glossy ticket that I could take home. And now this year they have the ones that have the little tear-off part at the bottom! Just like a real ticket! And I’m WAY too excited about it!

They might not be exactly what most haunt goers hope for when it comes to haunted attractions, but I believe that Haunted Labyrinth is a real gem of New England. I love extreme scares and loud, over-the-top sets and all that craziness just as much as the next haunt enthusiast. But there is something that I love about these passionate, dedicated, loyal community-based attractions that make this season so special. No amount of Oscar-worthy acting, award-winning makeup, expensive giant props, or crazy special effects can replace the magic that we see come out of Haunted Labyrinth every year.

The kids had their first haunted house experience at the Haunted Labyrinth! My kids are 10 and 5 and although it was a little spooky for my little one, they had a great time! It was the perfect balance of scary and fun! Thanks to this experience we can check out scarier places next year!

Haunted Labyrinth

This is a pretty fun haunted house. This was our second year in a row coming here! Each year it's a different theme so it's completely unpredictable and fun! You just don't know who or what will be lurking behind a curtain or door, you might not even know which door to open to escape a certain room! Strobe lights are flashing, things are slamming, noises are blasting, creatures are creeping and some are even sitting on the throne!! (lol) You seriously don't know what to expect! They usually have you waiting outdoors with lots of fun stuff going on in front of the building, but seeing as the weather was rainy this evening, they had us all waiting indoors which was great!! Another great year!!

I will start by saying that I am personally not a fan of haunted houses and such. They just aren't my thing. But I can certainly appreciate the effort that goes into planning and building such an impressive haunted house! To make it even better it is a nonprofit group benefiting local youth. This is our second year coming to this attraction. As other reviewers have stated the theme changes every year. You start out going from room to room in a "haunted labyrinth". There are tons of actors everywhere, I would hate to even count them all! Some are scary and some are humorous. The props are outstanding and you absolutely will get more than your money's worth! So maybe I am not a haunted house fan, but I will still continue to come here every year to support their cause and check out their impressive creativity! Let's face it, these kids could be doing a lot worse things than trying to scare people for Halloween fun... let's show them our support!

I've gone to this haunted labyrinth twice - last year and this. Last year they did a great job even though they kept a distance. Instead they had a great storyline and used lights and motion to disorient you so a lot of the fear came from anticipation. That sounds lame - but they scared you so much that the fear was heart pounding. This year it was even scarier. The story line was kinda lame but the effects were scarier. They don't touch you, but will get closer. (Covid restrictions: none). They went big! There were creatures startling and scaring you as you stood in line waiting. Or they would take selfies with you. Useful factoid: one member of our group Hates to be scared. She got dragged into this by other people. They scared the daylights out of her and she still had fun.

This was our first time visiting the Haunted Labyrinth, but you can bet we'll be back. The theme this year was The Lost Mine. The actors and set were wonderful and they even made waiting in line fun with creepy characters providing photo opps, a refreshment and souvenir stand, good music, and lights and fog to set the scene. I don't want to give away anything about the experience itself, but the actors, set design, darkness, strobe lights, and dark rooms with unclear entries and exits made for lots of surprises. The whole experience was great! Our whole crowd, including three eleven year-olds and three parents, all loved it!

Where to start? This whole thing is REMARKABLE! Wildly well-executed on every level. I don't scare easily at all, and this really freaked me out. I knew I was in for it when I couldn't figure out how to get us out of the first room! The labyrinth itself is beautifully constructed - I heard they start putting it together in July - and the actors are fantastic. Honestly, this blows away many "professional" operations. We are going to make this a tradition! Thank you, Haunted Labyrinth!

I've been coming here since I was about 10 , I'm 26 now I haven't missed not one year in between. Every year they have a different theme , which I love nobody wants to see the same theme over and over. Any-who they're usually only open Friday -Sunday during the October months so plan accordingly. They have a line outside BUT don't be afraid of its raining outside they have a holding area inside where you can wait and stay dry ( I love this ). You may also buy snacks , and drinks while waiting in line. This place is very organized they always have a cop crossing you from the parking lot to the Lab. The parking lot is a decent size it's always super muddy so plan accordingly. Every year on the website they offer a coupon usually 1.00 off up to 5 people. It cost less money to pay in cash than your card they charge extra. The children who do this every year are awesome they always get me and I absolutely enjoy it. The props and the designs are just phenomenal it's always something I look forward to, kids of all ages can go as well.

This was SO much better than any of the haunted houses I've been to. I got tickets in advance and waited in line for about ten minutes. Although the line was short, it was complete with a souvenir shop and gravestones with humorous phrases such as "I'm with stupid." When my girlfriend and I were waiting at the bottom of the steps, there was a worker in a black shirt staring at us. He said, "Don't worry, I'm a person...or am I??? teehee" and disappeared behind a curtain. When we walked up the stairs into the exhibit, we had a personal tour guide (who happened to be one of my coworkers) walking us through the maze and watching me scream my brains off. They literally personalized the tour for me, with the spooky clowns saying my name! The whole exhibit was set up like a maze, but don't worry about getting lost, because the scary ghost clowns tap on the doors to help you out. This was so well done that I was screaming, laughing and crying all at the same time. For only $12 that goes to a good cause, this was well deserving of 5 stars.

There are two types of Rhode Islanders, those who barely notice the changing of the season and those who are ready to decorate for Halloween by the first of September. If you fall into the second category, you’re probably familiar with Rhode Island’s most famous and longest-running haunted house, The Haunted Labyrinth. And despite all the chaos of this year, the team who puts this fantastic spooky event together has come together to make it safe to open for its 36th season, much to our collective delight.

No disappointments...

It was a good show by the staff and actors. I went there with my friends and we had a blast. Not at all boring at any instance. The location was rebuilt to suit the theme. It looked spooky by all means. Each room were designed well. The actors did their best. Did not disappoint.

Interesting...

The theme was interesting and they manage to select a good theme each year. It was a pleasure to watch the creativity put up by the team. They made best use of props and animatronics. Overall a great haunt.

Email Verified Scared and screamed many times

Really loved it! Went with family and we really had a blast! The theme has been really great and the sets were also amazing! It gives a real thrilling experience of a scary haunt. The rooms were well set up and the scares were hidden at every corner of the haunt. My wife became really scared and screamed many times. Well worth the experience.

Unexpected surprises

Haunted houses always had the best kind of thrills and depending on the organizers it can be as creative as it can get. The spoofs here were top notch. There were many rooms, hallways, staircases, all filled with unexpected surprises.

Email Verified Great evening

I have been visiting this haunt over the years and they always take care to rebuild the whole thing. It has always been fresh and new themes. The scares did make us scream. It was arranged so neatly with props and animatronics that made each scare more enjoyable. The actors were awesome and did each scene with so much dedication. On the whole, a great evening.

Email Verified Incredibly creative

The entire event was incredibly creative. They had put up a great show at a great location. It was in an old school. A school with lot of rooms gave a lot of scope for some good scares. I loved the adrenaline rush that gave me. The design specifically catered to that.

It was fun...

We had a lot of fun, jumps, laughs, and scares! You must take care that you are the first in the group. Else you will only have to watch people get scared. It was fun anyway.

Thrill seekers will love this one...

A good time for all the thrill seekers. Scares were impressive. It was never the usual jump scares types. Instead the scenes were elaborate and all attention in taking care of minute details. The haunts were spooky enough and made us jump and run.

Email Verified Highly Impressed

Highly impressed with the Haunted Labyrinth. I took my wife and her friends at this place and all of us had a great time. Reached before their opening time and purchased the general admission tickets from the ticket counter. Spent approximately 90 minutes in the queue before entering the haunted zone. At the very outset, management is very proactive in handling the crowd and an adequate buffer time was maintained between the groups. The walk-through wasn’t simple and so many rough terrains were available to provide an authentic picture of a mine. We all got spooked several times and loved the layout, decorations, hanging chains and special effects. All actors were phenomenal in displaying the scary acts and we really got scared! I will definitely be returning to this attraction. Highly recommended!!

Quite impressive

Compared to other haunt houses, Haunted Labyrinth is quite impressive. The themes used are fresh and inventive. They manage to keep the customers engaged and interested from start to finish. Priced reasonably, it does not boasts of expensive props but the creatively designed props were used wisely to scare us. They manage to have something new and different from other haunts. It’s a great outing and wanting more.

Attractive, scare zone is average

I have been at Haunted Labyrinth with my family, friends and few relatives. We were a huge group of 14 people. That was such a big issue of parking, very limited space and no alternate option. As soon as we entered inside, spooky clowns have started following our group, still the scare level was not good enough. There were 3-4 kids in our group and they were not at all enjoying as there was no such activity for kids. Afterwards we enjoyed haunted hayride and yelling. Hayride was attractive while scare zone was not up to the mark. I had so much fun with our family friends, but attraction of haunted house can be rated average.

Unique scenes to scare you

I come here every year and each year it is a different theme and a different experience. Haunted Labyrinth is built around a school campus and had a great set. It was creatively designed. There were several rooms and each room had a unique scene to scare you. It was a greatly personalized haunt, with actors calling out names. It is one full maze of rooms and was brilliantly done. It had lot of element of surprise, trying to find our way out of each room after facing the challenges present in the room. Thanks to staff and actors for making this a memorable one.

Lacked clarity

I have seen better ones before. This of course was different but lacked clarity, it was totally mayhem. Waited for hours outside to get in and the haunt start with little scary props and actors jumping out from nowhere but the scares fell apart, as either actors were not ready or the group in front would have already revealed it. My advice is to put more staff for better crowd management.

Enriching the lives of youth one surprise at a time

Families visiting The Haunted Labyrinth on Sunday night get a good scare. For the longest-running haunted house in New England — celebrating 39 years in 2023 — it’s not just about Halloween, it’s about bringing young people into the Church and offering them roles of leadership.

CRANSTON — Not much is more exhilarating than a caught-off-guard surprise. In October, that’s what the youth volunteers at The Haunted Labyrinth live for – a light-hearted scare, immediately followed by some of the biggest smiles you’ll see during “spooky season.” And, it’s all in good fun. There’s no blood or gore — The Haunted Labyrinth doesn’t need it to get the job done. Instead, the attraction features many skillfully designed rooms to entertain the community through the art of a good-old-fashioned scare. The Haunted Labyrinth, a faith-based nonprofit, run entirely by adult and youth volunteers at the Rejoice in Hope Youth Center, remains one of the few positive, yet still thrilling, family-oriented Halloween events in Rhode Island. For 39 years, hundreds of youth and adults from parishes within the Diocese of Providence have participated in this unique annual project, assisting with design, building and performance. Some use the time for their school community service hours and others just for the fun of it. The preparations for the 2023 Haunted Labyrinth began in March with building brainstorming sessions and the hands-on work began in June. Since its beginning, nearly four decades ago, The Haunted Labyrinth has raised approximately $2 million for the Diocese of Providence, averaging about $52,000 per year. Travis Chartier, a senior at St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket, lifted his mask to reveal kind eyes and a big smile. For the past four years, the teenager has volunteered his scaring services to The Haunted Labyrinth. He shared how this is certainly an out-of-the ordinary occasion to open a door to the Catholic Youth Ministry to Rhode Island’s young people. “It’s amazing here and it’s a good opportunity for the youth to come and experience the fun. All of the people who help run it are amazing and I really love them — that keeps me coming back. It’s nice to see people having fun. This is the highlight of my Halloween.” For The Haunted Labyrinth leadership, the priority is placed on more Bible than “boos.” Before the line of eager patrons begins forming outside of the Haunted Labyrinth, 50-70 volunteers, depending on the night, are busy putting the finishing touches on their costumes and taking time for prayer and reflection. The Haunted Labyrinth offers a chance for many of the teenagers to learn about aspects of the Catholic faith. For those who are unchurched, this might be the first time they hear a passage from the Bible or learn what a saint is. The staff is always available to answer questions and willing to engage in conversation with them about their faith. For the hundreds of volunteers who have returned inspired and excited each year, The Haunted Labyrinth has offered the youth an opportunity to use their gifts, talents and creative energy in a positive, productive and fun way. Pat Kane, director of Rejoice in Hope Youth Center and associate diocesan director of Youth Ministry, shared how she has seen lives impacted for the youth who help create The Haunted Labyrinth in the most positive ways. Countless young people who began here have continued to be involved with the many other Catholic Youth opportunities offered during the year. “We have had a few young people converted to Catholicism because of their start with The Haunted Labyrinth. We have seen young people personally grow in their confidence, sense of belonging and acceptance. Some have developed a stronger faith and become more active in the Church.”

'Haunted Labyrinth' to go on at Cranston youth center with one-way path

by JESSICA A. BOTELHO, NBC 10 NEWS

For the 36th consecutive year, eight graders and high school students from across Rhode Island are hosting the “Haunted Labyrinth,” a family-friendly fundraiser held at the Rejoice and Hope Center in Cranston.{ } (Photo courtesy of Joe Fazio)

CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — Members of the Rejoice and Hope Center , a youth ministry in Cranston, are determined to keep the spirit of Halloween alive this year despite the coronavirus pandemic.

For the 36th consecutive year, eight graders and high school students from across Rhode Island are hosting the “ Haunted Labyrinth ,” a family-friendly fall festivity that not only serves as a fundraiser for the Center, but is also held there.

“We just got approved last Monday to open,” Joe Fazio, who helps lead the fundraiser, said of the annual tradition. “We were delaying construction because we didn’t think we’d be allowed to open.”

But Fazio said while they are known for their labyrinth, or their mysterious maze, they had to make the path a one-way walk-through to accommodate rules that are in place due to the pandemic.

He and other volunteers contacted the Rhode Island Department of Health and asked if it would be feasible.

They met with a board and were granted approval, agreeing to disinfect all surfaces, as well as require guests to wear masks and gloves, as well as practice social distancing.

“We’re going to let no more than six people in at a time. The next group won’t go in until they are 20 feet apart,” Fazio said, also advising guests to purchase tickets online ahead of visiting.

“We’re going to have increased wait times regardless because we have to do temperature checks. The health department wants us to give out gloves that people have to wear through the haunt, so that’s going to take same time, so if you buy your ticket online, you don’t have to wait in the ticket line,” he added. “You can get your temperature taken and then hop into line to go to the walk-through.”

Fazio said the theme for this year is “Space Station 13.” He said guests will witness the decompression airlock, see the cryosleep chambers, observe the pod platform, plus experience a spacewalk and avoid a black hole.

“You’ll get a real good tour,” Fazio said, also adding that a great group of kids has been helping.

“They were really excited to hear that we were doing this this year,” he said. “They were bummed out because they didn’t think they’d be able to. A lot of the same people came back, but they brought friends.”

Fazio said “the haunt is 100-percent volunteer,” noting that participants earn community service hours leading up to their Confirmation.

The volunteers work together, serving as actors in the Haunted Labyrinth, as well as builders and designers.

“All of the actors are high school age,” Fazio said. “Half of the kids come in because it’s something fun to do an you get your service hours, but some kids don’t even need service hours. They just come because they have a good time. They are really dedicated.”

He said adults help provide security and help with ticket sales, with proceeds to be donated to The Rejoice and Hope Center, which is located at 804 Dyer Ave. The Center serves 120 parishes in the Diocese of Providence and hosts prayer meetings, activities, retreats, and more.

“It benefits all the programs there,” Fazio said. “They have a lot of youth groups, sports, retreats, you name it. It’s important because it’s keeps kids off the streets. They come in and have a great time.”

Patricia Kane, who is the director of the Center, said the annual funds help keep the Center open and support many programs they host and organize. She said while the pandemic has limited group activities, the Haunted Labyrinth is giving participating youth the opportunity to work together as a team.

"With incorporate the teachings of the Church. We'll say a prayer that connects with the theme of what we're doing and we do the same thing for the Labyrinth," Kane said. "Every night, we have either a scripture reading or we talk about a saint, and we apply that to life, and also to what we're doing at the Labyrinth and we have a standard prayer that we read every night. So, we work at building a community and building, forming relationships, and helping them to bring their gifts out. Some of the kids, practically speaking, are better at acting and others are better at building, so we try to see where their gifts are and put them to use the best we can. It's a project that's bigger than themselves and it gives them a wider sense of the Church."

Kane also said safety, of course, is paramount.

"We want to offer a nice, safe event that people will enjoy and have a good time," she said.

The Haunted Labyrinth is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. through Halloween night. While they typically advertise indoor waiting in the rain, they will have in-car waiting during inclement weather this year instead.

“We will take your phone number and we’ll text you when you’re on deck,” Fazio said.

Tickets are available online for $13 each at HauntedLabyrinth.com .

Labyrinth: knossos, myth and reality.

Ancient myths meet archaeological treasures in this new blockbuster at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Carly Hilts went along to learn more about the great palace at Knossos, legendary location of the Minotaur-haunted labyrinth, and real-life repository of Minoan culture.

' src=

Knossos, on Crete, has evidence for occupation spanning the Neolithic to the Byzantine periods, but it is best known as the legendary location of King Minos’ labyrinth, home to the monstrous Minotaur. A new exhibition running at the Ashmolean Museum explores both aspects of the site’s story, tracing the evolution of its mythological status, and showcasing the equally remarkable real-life insights that archaeological investigations have revealed over the last 145 years.

haunted labyrinth photos

The Oxford-based museum is a fitting home for an exhibition on this theme: Knossos’ most famous excavator, Arthur Evans, carried out his 1900-1905 works during his tenure as Keeper (essentially, Director) of the Ashmolean, and these investigations still dominate interpretations of the site today. At the time, Cretan law required the majority of Evans’ finds to remain in Greece, but the Ashmolean retained his excavation archive. In Labyrinth: Knossos, Myth and Reality, these illuminating bodies of evidence have now been reunited for the duration of the exhibition: of the more than 200 items on display, more than half are loans from Athens and Crete.

The first portion of the displays, contained in an atmospherically lit red-and-black space, explores the myth of the Minotaur. Almost as soon as you pass through the gallery doors, you are confronted by the eponymous monster, carved from marble and no less menacing for having lost its horns and limbs long ago. The sculpture had once adorned a fountain in Roman Athens, and was probably a copy of an earlier Greek bronze. Close-by, a short animation silently summarises the best-known version of the Minotaur story, dating to the 1st century BC – but the tale has much earlier origins, as attested by a selection of decorative 6th-century BC vases displayed opposite. Within the same space, an even earlier fragment of painted plaster – once part of a floor within Knossos’ Great Palace – preserves a winding ‘labyrinth’ design 1,000 years older than any written form of the legend, indicating how long such imagery has been associated with the site. Demonstrating the myth’s longevity in the other direction, its neighbour is another maze-like motif that was created by Mark Wallinger in 2013 for display within the labyrinthine tunnels of the London Underground network.

Within this section of the exhibition, visitors also learn about how the myth evolved through time and different tellers. High up on the walls, snippets from Classical writers including Catullus, Virgil, and Diodorus Siculus encircle the space, adding to the sense of layer upon layer of shifting interpretations. In the display cases below, meanwhile, you see how Knossos’ Greek and Roman inhabitants proudly embraced their legendary heritage, minting coins with labyrinth designs; how the famous maze was adopted as a medieval Christian symbol; and a host of colourful historic maps reflecting early attempts to relocate the site.

haunted labyrinth photos

Legends in a material world

Leaving behind mythical narratives to explore the material record, the next part of the exhibition concerns the advent of archaeological investigations at Knossos, particularly the site’s rediscovery in 1878 by a local businessman, the fittingly named Minos Kalokairinos. Kalokairinos’ search had been inspired by Heinrich Schliemann’s discoveries at Troy

(1870-1890) and Mycenae (1876), and he too made spectacular finds, uncovering the remains of what would become known as the Great Palace at Knossos – although local authorities put a hasty halt to his investigations, fearing that finds would be spirited away by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, under whose control the island still partly lay. Today he is often overshadowed by Arthur Evans, but the Ashmolean sets out to redress the balance with an array of photographs, documents, and a towering pithos storage vessel highlighting Kalokairinos’ achievements.

From this scene-setting space, visitors then move into a much brighter, airier room where, beneath soaring ceilings, sky-blue joins the palette of red and black, and painted scarlet columns give the feel of being inside the palace itself. You are initially met with relics of Evans’ excavations – notebooks, photographs, intricate plans of the hundreds of rooms that were uncovered, section drawings – and then turn a corner into a large room showcasing some of his discoveries, immersing you in Minoan culture. As well as watercolour reconstructions of some of the palace’s famous frescoes, highlights include beautiful pottery decorated with patterns of repeated rosettes, or strikingly detailed octopuses; Linear B tablets and intriguing examples of yet-to-be deciphered Minoan hieroglyphs; religious items; jewellery; and a drinking vessel perfectly replicating a triton shell in marble. Other themes include the role of women within the palace, and the significance of the bull and marine-life imagery that was found throughout the site.

The exhibition is not an uncritical celebration of Evans’ work, however: some of the displays address his occasionally imaginative approach to ‘filling in the gaps’ when reconstructing fragmentary remains – none more so than a watercolour of a damaged fresco that was thought to preserve the lower body of a young boy collecting saffron. The child’s top half was duly filled in – but subsequent discoveries have revealed the flower-gatherer to be a monkey. Also acknowledged is the impact of some of Evans’ ‘interventions’ on the site. In some cases these were intended to help protect fragile frescos or preserve crumbling architecture, but there is no doubt that Evans’ enthusiasm for reinforced concrete (then a cutting-edge material) means his vision of how the palace would have looked remains literally set in stone.

Work at Knossos did not stop with Evans, of course, and in a cool, calm, white room at the end of the exhibition you can see finds from much more recent excavations. Some reflect the investigations in the 1950s and 1960s, which shed more light on the site’s Neolithic occupation – including what is thought to be Europe’s oldest spoon – while there are also artefacts from a religious sanctuary excavated in 1974, including enigmatic double-axes, and a stunning dagger inlaid with the image of a griffin. Equally appealing are tiny gold, ivory, and stone puppies that were found on nearby Mount Juktas in 1974-1988. Although barely bigger than your thumbnail, they are so detailed that it is possible to identify them as a kind of mastiff – a valuable, imported breed. Could these votive offerings have been intended as an early form of pet insurance for these expensive animals?

Other displays present artefacts uncovered in only the last few years, and highlight the value of scientific techniques that Evans could have only dreamed of. The overwhelming impression is that this is a site with a long and in some ways very familiar story, but a story that still has many new secrets to reveal.

Further information Labyrinth: Knossos, Myth and Reality runs until 30 July. See https://ashmolean.org/exhibition/labyrinth-knossos-myth-reality for more details.
