The Paine 14

A Herreshoff 12 1⁄2, in miniature

Designer Chuck Paine enjoys a sail in his newly launched Paine 14. The boat is based on the venerable Herreshoff 12½, but is 45 percent smaller. The unstayed carbon-fiber rig weighs but 20 lbs, and the boat is easily trailered behind a mid-sized car.

T he venerable Herreshoff 12½, which will turn 100 years old in 2014, is widely regarded as one of the—no, the—finest daysailer ever designed. Such a statement seems hyperbolic until one considers that the 12½’-waterline sloop has been in continuous production since the first one rolled out of the Herreshoff factory in 1914, and over those 100 years an average of 30 boats per year have been built. Herreshoff built 364 of them before the business closed and production moved to the Quincy Adams yard. Quincy Adams built 51 of the boats before Cape Cod Shipbuilding picked up the mantle, building 35 wooden hulls before switching to a long run of fiberglass ones. Doughdish, Inc. also builds a fiberglass 12½—an exact copy of the Herreshoff original—and Artisan Boatworks has built a few new wooden ones, and is willing and able to do more.

From the success of this legendary design came derivatives. In the early 1980s, Joel White conceived a shallower-draft centerboard version. He widened the hull slightly to offset the loss of stability caused by the shallower draft, but his Haven 12½ in the water is nearly identical to the original Herreshoff model. Designer-builder John Brooks has recently launched a glued-lapstrake plywood interpretation of the design, and Phil Bolger, at the time of his death in 2009, had just sailed and praised highly a sheet-plywood interpretation that he’d devised. And now Chuck Paine, who retired from active designing a few years ago, has just unveiled a scaled-down version of the boat—a beautiful 60-percent miniature of the classic Herreshoff 12½ with some decidedly contemporary updates, including an unstayed carbon-fiber rig and foil-shaped fin keel and rudder.

With all of the other H12½ derivatives on the market—and the new originals—I couldn’t help but wonder why the world needed another one. And so I asked Paine that question the day I met him for a sail aboard the new boat.

“I don’t know if it does,” he politely demurred. “I was retired and wanted a project.”

Paine and I had met near his home in Tenants Harbor, Maine, on a blustery August afternoon. Over the course of our outing in AMELIA, as the new boat is called, the answer to my question—the rationale for the new boat—unfurled slowly but decidedly.

“I didn’t want a boat the size of a 12½,” said Paine. He has ambitions to take the boat to Florida in the winter one of these years, and realizes that the original 12½ is just too much boat to tow those 1,500 miles behind his Subaru Outback. “This boat,” he said of the prototype Paine 14, “is so easy to put in the water.” How easy? Paine walked me through the launch procedure, which involved backing his custom Triad trailer down the ramp until the tailpipe of his Outback is just touching the water. Float the boat off, pop in the unstayed rig, strap the mainsail to the mast (more on that verb in a moment), raise it and the jib, and sail away. It takes two minutes, literally, as compared with the two hours Paine reckons it takes to launch and rig a Herreshoff 12½. And he should know, because he’s owned and loved an original 12½ for the past 40 years, and keeps it in pristine condition on a mooring adjacent to AMELIA’s.

Paine also did not want to tread on the business niche developed by Doughdish, Cape Cod Shipbuilding, and other H12½ shops over the past several decades. “They are making the world a much better place,” he said. “Plus, I didn’t want to mess with the world’s most perfect design.”

AMELIA, the prototype Paine 14, sails in company with Paine’s Herreshoff 12½. In light air, AMELIA has a decisive speed advantage over her big sister.

N autical linguists will note that, two paragraphs above, I wrote the rather lubberly phrase “strap the mainsail to the mast.” But I meant it, for Paine has come up with an elegantly simple method of affixing the luff of this sail to its carbon-fiber spar. It involves a series of five 2″-wide Velcro straps sewn onto the sail; they wrap around the mast, functioning as a sort of soft mast hoop. They don’t look traditional, but who cares? They’re almost invisible to the eye, and create a very secure attachment—with one slight drawback: There can be no strap above the jib halyard block on this fractional rig, as a strap so-placed would hinder the sail’s passage aloft. And so this portion of the sail is unattached, requiring considerable halyard tension in the 20-mph gusts we experienced that day. But, the halyard should be tight in these conditions anyhow, and so this loose portion of the luff offers a sort of halyard-tension gauge.

The club-footed jib is set flying, which means that it’s not attached to a forestay, because there is no forestay. It’s self-tending, making tacking extremely easy, as we’ll see shortly. The rig, with halyards, weighs about 20 lbs, and it fits into a socket made from fiberglass exhaust tubing that runs from the deck to the keel.

Paine handed me the helm as he dropped the mooring, and as we bore away and sheeted in, the boat accelerated noticeably more quickly than would a Herreshoff 12½. Paine noted that AMELIA, in light air, literally sails circles around his 12½ —which one would expect given the new boat’s underbody configuration. Paine was quick to point out that Nathanael Herreshoff designed the H12½ for the blustery and choppy conditions of Buzzards Bay—and that the older boat, once referred to as the “Buzzards Bay Boys Boat,” was meant as a trainer, and was thus conservatively rigged. The Paine 14 is not so conservatively rigged; although its hull is 45 percent smaller than the 12½’s, the sail plan, at 95 sq ft, is only 35 percent smaller. The racier, lighter, more trailerable Paine 14, says the designer, is meant for a different niche than the 12½. “I could sail this boat in the morning at Brooklin,” he said, casting his gaze downeast, “and then load it on the trailer and sail it at Acadia National Park in the afternoon.”

Plywood bulkheads define the boat’s flotation chambers. The after chamber doubles as a stowage compartment, and has a watertight hatch.

After I tacked down the harbor, Paine took the helm in order to demonstrate a few of his observations about the new design. First, he called attention to the boat’s impressive short-tacking ability, the result of both the self-tending jib and, more important, the boat’s ability to accelerate out of a tack. There is simply no noticeable loss of speed as the boat comes through the eye of the wind and fills away on the other tack. AMELIA could, I believe, tack her way up a 20′-wide channel.

She also carries significant way. In the breeze we were sailing in that day, I would have expected AMELIA to stop pretty quickly when punched directly into the wind. But she does not—especially with 400 lbs of yacht designer and magazine editor as payload. Paine demonstrated this as we approached a moored boat that we could not quite point above. About 15′ away from it, he gently luffed AMELIA—more than a pinch but less than directly into the wind—and she continued, with virtually no pressure on the sails, to clear the mooring ball. Paine then bore away and continued on.

After this, we doused the jib to get a look at how she performs under mainsail alone. As expected, AMELIA did not point as high, but she still made clear and deliberate progress to windward. Under a reefed main and jib in 18–20 knots, she seemed to lose no speed but there was no need to dump the main in gusts, as there had been under full sail, when we kept a nearly constant bubble in the main’s luff—a so-called fisherman’s reef, Paine told me. With the mainsail reefed, gusts of breeze had no apparent effect on the helm, while with a full main it clearly loaded up, and required constant tending of the sheet. In fact, Paine rightfully chided me at one point for taking advantage of the handy mainsheet cam cleat on the deck of the after flotation tank.

As we made our way back to the mooring, we saw a fleet of 420s zipping around the buoys, with young athletic crews hanging from trapeze. “No hiking on this boat,” said Paine, whose sailing résumé includes an Olympic tilt in the Finn dinghy. “It’s an old man’s boat,” he said of the “14.” “But I’m an old man.”

Paine calls the Paine 14’s wood construction a “hybrid” method, because there are sawn plywood frames in the ends of the boat, while the mid-body is molded around a temporary jig. A production fiberglass version is under discussion.

T he wooden Paine 14 is built of three layers of 1⁄8″ Spanish cedar or western red cedar. The planking is applied to forms spaced 7½” on center in the boat’s cockpit area, while permanent frames define the shapes of the bow and stern. “The frames don’t need to be there,” said Paine. “The boat complies with ABS standards without them.” He calls his approach to this boat’s molding “hybrid construction,” and he did it simply to ease the building process. The frames, which are about 2″ deep and made from a stack of marine plywood, are hidden in the flotation chambers—the after one of which has a watertight hatch, allowing it to double as a stowage compartment.

Paine built this prototype himself, out of wood, after an earlier version was built in New Zealand. He reckons, however, that the real market will be in fiberglass, as he estimates that a professionally built wooden one will cost about $70,000, while a fiberglass version will come in around $38,500. Plans are available to home builders.

Paine planked the prototype the old-fashioned way, which is to say that it was temporarily stapled, rather than vacuum-bagged. He then faired and fiberglassed the hull. The exterior received one layer of 10-oz boat cloth, while the visible cockpit area received a 6-oz layer, “for longevity,” said Paine. “I want this thing to be around 100 years from now.” If the Paine 14’s predecessor is any indication, that’s not too tall a wish.

Nice looking boat. I have no problem with the Velcro straps, but the airflow over the sails would be improved significantly if both were flown loose-footed. My sailmaker–who is legendary among wooden-boat afficionados–says that on a jib you lose about 30 percent of the drive by tying the sail hard against a boom. The gain from letting the main loose would be less, but still significant.

Really like your Paine 14. Wouldn’t mind having a small keelboat but my 17’x4.5′ lug-rigged boat with a daggerboard, LET’S GO , is just so handy to launch and rig. I’m also getting a bit old (83) to think about building another boat. Bert Bowers

The Paine 14

A modern, more manageable take on the herreshoff 12½..

paine 14 sailboat for sale

There are folks in this world who from an early age not only dream, but do. This is a story about one such person: my identical twin brother, Chuck Paine, and his project designing and building a modified cold-molded Herreshoff 12 ½.

The boat, named  Amelia  and painted a glossy light blue, was launched last summer and introduced to the world at the 2013 Maine Boats Homes & Harbors Show. At press time, Chuck already had taken an order for one and was working with a builder to produce more.

Chuck and I grew up on Jamestown Island near Newport, Rhode Island. We spent our summers surrounded by boats—ferries, Navy ships, rowboats, and yachts. We hung around boatyards, but as our mother decreed, kept quiet, were polite, and distracted nobody at their work.

The two biggest shipyards were Wharton’s and the Round House. Wharton’s built everything from sawn-frame fishing trawlers to exquisite pulling boats. The Round House sheds, to the best of my recollection, handled little other than power and sailing yachts designed and built by the Herreshoff brothers.

To say that Chuck and I were enthralled with the beauty and performance of these gorgeous yachts would be an understatement. As soon as we could read, we devoured  Rudder, Skipper, Motor Boating,  and especially the design section of  Yachting.  Soon enough we found the two or three books dedicated to the Herreshoff family, concentrating on John B. and Nathanael G. Herreshoff. Much to my mother’s concern, we were one-track nautical fanatics. All we wanted in life was to follow in the path of Nat Herreshoff. (It is not an accident that I named my only son Nathaniel.)

Chuck and I committed the Herreshoff scantling rules to memory. We learned to fair lines before our teens, and took private (and free) drafting lessons from Charles F. “Chick” Street, a talented amateur yacht designer and a Massachusetts Institute of Technology naval architecture graduate.

paine 14 sailboat for sale

To our immense good fortune, Chuck and I were artistic prodigies, a fact not lost upon the state of Rhode Island. As “gifted and talented” teens, we were selected to attend subsidized art classes at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. Another subsidized program allowed us, at age 13, to take sailing lessons in what was our first time in a sailboat. We soon were winning more than our share of races on Narragansett Bay, perhaps through some sort of inbred talent but more likely due to the unfair advantage of twin telepathy and exactly equal weight.

Eventually our love of boats boiled over. We saved our earnings from paper routes, lawn-mowing, and other  jobs to build our own racing boat, a Bluejay, which was the youth boat of choice then. Despite having no experience and only a few hand tools, we purchased a set of plans from Sparkman and Stephens for $50, which included our official racing number. Too young to drive, we traveled by bus to the M. L. Condon Company in White Plains, New York, where we hand-selected our expensive Sitka spruce, mahogany, and Bruynzeel marine plywood. Long story short, two 14-year-old kids built a Bluejay named  Scratch  that became nearly unbeatable on Narragansett Bay. Two years later, we sailed  Scratch  to second place in the North American championships.

I had pluck and could draw, but on top of sharing those assets Chuck was smart and did well in school. He sailed through the upper tracks of elementary and high school, concentrating upon the tough classes like math and science, always with an eye toward engineering. After all, the Herreshoffs made the top of the heap as much through mechanics as through art. Chuck’s mental magic hit the jackpot when he took the College Boards. He missed getting a perfect combined score of 1600 by getting a single math question wrong. He went to Brown University and studied mechanical engineering, enabled by plentiful financial aid and a state scholarship.

As is well known now in the yacht-design world, Chuck never lost his eye for the prize—to follow in the footsteps of Nat Herreshoff. After years of unswerving effort he established his own design firm, and more than 1,000 boats have been launched to his designs.

In 1971, at the age of 27, Chuck bought a wooden Herreshoff 12½, which he renamed  Petunia . He proceeded to restore it to near-new condition and steered the boat for many a happy mile. When he retired from Paine Yacht Design four years ago, he wrote a book about his designs and the philosophy behind his oeuvre and the boating business. Then he undertook a project about which he’d long dreamed: he attempted to improve the one boat design he’d considered virtually unmatched.

Chuck has often said that the 12½ represents Nathanael Herreshoff’s absolute best design. Others say it’s the most satisfying boat to own in the watery world. In my opinion, few keelboats of any size can boast such a comfortable cockpit, and the 12 ½ is almost impossible to capsize.

But owning one of these jewels is a commitment. Built originally to meet a budget, not for longevity, they require constant maintenance.

Chuck’s goal was to create a boat that looked almost identical to  Petunia , but he wanted to make it smaller, for easier trailering, and to add small conveniences to make setup quicker and maintenance less. He also wanted to reduce the wetted surface by nearly half to make the boat faster.

paine 14 sailboat for sale

Herreshoff was never asked to put these features into the 12½ in 1913, when he was commissioned to design a boat for youngsters learning to sail on Buzzards Bay. Maybe left to his own devices he might have tried the split underbody— such fins were being experimented with at the time on skimming-dish sail racers.  Petunia , and fiberglass versions, such as the Doughdish and the Cape Cod Shipbuilding H-12, do have wonderful qualities. They’re pretty and especially comfortable due to a commodious cockpit. Small sailboats, especially ones meant to be trailered, normally have a centerboard. But while centerboarders can flip, keelboats do so only rarely. That is yet another advantage of the 12½, especially as a craft for the young and the old.

The Paine 14 is as identical as Chuck could make it to the12 ½. Down to the finest details—the covering boards and coamings, the bow and stern flotation tanks, even the fittings and paint scheme are very similar. The molded sheer strakes were specially constructed on the property of the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, Rhode Island.

paine 14 sailboat for sale

Like most yacht designers, Chuck spent his career drafting plans that were influenced by the stipulations of clients and corporations. But designers of all stripes can be their most visionary when not held in harness by clients.

“It was tremendous fun designing a boat without someone else telling me what to do,” said Chuck. I think it’s partly for this reason that Chuck, not normally a big risk-taker, pulled out all the stops in terms of inventiveness.

I can hear you thinking, “In such a small boat and one which intentionally mimics something already in existence, how much improvement can be expected?” It was reasonable to expect evolutionary, but not revolutionary results.

But when I went down to Tenants Harbor on launching day at the end of July to “test-drive” the boat, I found it to be a scintillating performer. When I say performance, I mean that in two respects.  Amelia  sails faster and is much easier to maneuver than a Herreshoff 12 ½, and is more manageable.

The Paine 14 can be stored on a trailer in a garage and towed easily behind a normal-sized car, in part because it weighs about half as much as the Herreshoff version. It draws slightly less, and thus can be launched at any normal ramp from the extendable-boom Triad trailer. The carbon fiber mast does not require stays and is easily stepped (which was more important to Chuck than a light mast’s effect upon stability and speed). The sails are easy to rig, because the jib luff contains the forestay—a pull on its halyard is all that’s needed. The main has no track or slides; rather it is bent to the mast with five Velcro straps.

When I sailed  Amelia , I was blindsided by the way the boat accelerated. In eight knots of breeze or more, the boat went from dead in the water to full speed in three or four boat lengths, as long as the sails were trimmed right. The teeny little rudder—a perfect airfoil—was capable of whirling the boat in pirouettes.

In a journalist’s necessary inclination toward full disclosure, here are some revelations:  Amelia  was not Chuck’s first attempt toward a modern version of a 12½. Just prior to his “retirement,” he drew a nearly identical hull for a client who wanted a small daysailer to stow aboard his Paine-designed motoryacht. That boat, which was built in New Zealand, was gaff-rigged, with small differences in keel size and placement. Also, Joel White designed a trailerable wooden boat called the Haven 12 ½, which deserves consideration as a shoal-draft variant that’s the same size as the original Herreshoffs.

None of these boats can or will ever be inexpensive. A cold-molded version of the P-14 will cost $70,000 and a fiberglass P-14 carries a projected price of $39,000 or so.

Is there a market for even the prettiest copy of a Herreshoff 12 ½? If so, from what quarter? There are and will always be people who’ll seek out sisterships of  Petunia , willing to pay a high price for any boat that is restorable, providing it has a Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. builder’s plaque.

But  Amelia  looks just as lovely, and will be far easier to own. After testing Chuck’s amazing best-ever design, I predict that the design will sell like French fries at a county fair.

Herreshoff 12 ½ vs. Paine 14:

The Numbers

“The boats are very different in some ways, intentionally very similar in others because, as I will always profess, the H12½ is the best yacht design ever done by anyone. The big difference is that the P-14 is significantly lighter. I am amazed by the effect that this has upon the boat’s performance.” — Chuck Paine

PAINE 14: An Updated Herreshoff 12-1/2

' src=

Pardon the void in my personal blogosphere here, but I’m just back from Annapolis, where I was test-sailing boats for the comic after the big show closed down. By far the most relaxing test I did was with designer Chuck Paine (see photo up top) aboard his new Paine 14 , a sweet little daysailer based on the old Herreshoff 12-1/2 . We had a great time ogling moored boats and chatting up a storm as we ghosted up and down Spa Creek in the few cat’s paws of wind that presented themselves–exactly the sort of thing a boat like this is designed for.

Chuck is seriously devoted to the original 12-1/2 (he has one he’s been sailing for the past 40 years), and he’s not about to tell you that his new boat is an improvement on it. What he claims is that the old Herreshoff version is the “best boat design ever” and his new design is second best.

What it is, in reality, is 10 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter, with a modern underbody and a Marconi rig. It is faster than the old boat, easier to trailer, and easier to rig, as it has an unstayed carbon-fiber mast to which the mainsail is bent on with simple Velcro straps.

The new Paine 14 in profile with Marconi sailplan. You can also order a gaff rig, if you insist on spending more money for less convenience

Velcro mainsail strap–undone. The straps let the main luff slide down to leeward a bit while sailing, which improves airflow over the sail

Unlike the original, this new boat can be sailed under main alone and is also unsinkable, as there are huge flotation compartments fore and aft.

During our sail we had no problem creeping upwind in maybe 3 knots of breeze (or less) against some mild negative current. Because it has relatively little wetted surface area, the boat gets moving easily and has enough weight that it carries its way nicely in the light stuff.

Ready to hop back on its trailer after our test sail

Chuck actually designed and built this boat solely for his own use, but enough people expressed interest in it that he went ahead and found a builder for it. French & Webb , in Belfast, Maine, are offering fiberglass boats for $38.5K and cold-molded epoxy boats for $69.5K. The two versions will weigh the same, so they can play together should any one-design fleets spring up.

Keep an eye on the comic for a more detailed review on the boat sometime in the future.

8 Best Daysailers Under 21 Feet – Buying Guide

HUNTER 15

SAFFIER SE 33 UD

Chris Riley

It’s a sunny day, and you want to take a spin around the harbor. What better way to do that than launching a daysailer?

These sailboats are traditionally smaller than a cruise ship or yacht, but considerably bigger than kayaks , catamarans, inflatable dinghies , and other smaller boats. Owning an open sailboat shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg, but expect to spend some top dollar.

Here are 8 best daysailers that are 21 feet or under.

CATALINA 16.5

CATALINA 16.5

Let’s kick things off with the Catalina 16.5 sailboat. It might come as a surprise to find a Catalina boat listed among the best daysailers under 20 feet because the name is more known for bigger cruiser yachts. But there are a whole lot of small boats built by Catalina, too.

The Catalina 16.5 is one of the most versatile hand-laminated fiberglass sloops from this designer and can be purchased with the option of a 4-feet 5-inch shoal-draft keel or a centerboard that draws 5-inch with the board up.

Consider choosing the lead-keel option if you want to park it on a mooring or at the dock. It is built to remain stable in such conditions. On the flip side, getting the centerboard version is most suitable if you want to store the boat on a trailer.

Catalina builds all their boats with a self-bailing cockpit, and the 16.5 is no different. It comes with a huge self-bailing cockpit. There is a waterproof hatch and a stowage space forward of the boat. The boat also comes with standard hiking straps and a tiller extension if you want to step on to the side deck for some spray in your face and good visibility forward.

You can get out on the water with around ten grand or more. Check out current listings for Catalina 16.5 .

Teaching your kids or anyone to sail requires a low-maintenance and very steady boat. This is where the Hunter 15 shines. It is a perfect knockabout sailboat that can take a lot of rough beating without breaking, thanks to its high freeboard and fiberglass construction.

The boat has a wide beam that ensures she’s steady no matter what. Crew-weight shifts or sudden crazy jibes that may happen along the way won’t do a thing to this boat. And even the most fearful and unsteady learner won’t fall out of it. It will take a tremendous effort to capsize this beautiful boat, making it one of the best daysailers any daysailer (or intending daysailer) would want to have.

But stability and durability are not the only pluses for the Hunter 15. It has a self-bailing cockpit that allows any water that gets into the boat to exit quickly. There is room enough to comfortably accommodate up to four people.

Getting a durable and high-performance sailboat that will cruise smoothly on the water is one thing; finding convenient storage is an entirely different ballgame. Thankfully, you don’t have to spend extra cash when it comes to this boat. The sailboat can fit into your garage while sitting on a trailer. And here’s another good thing with Hunter 15; you don’t have to worry about varnishing wood afterward.

But perhaps the best part of the Hunter 15 is that it is a very affordable boat. Although sailboats don’t come cheap, you don’t have to break the bank to own one of the beauties.

Prices for a new one range from around $10k, and you can find used ones for less. Check out the listings of Hunter 15 and other equally excellent models of the Hunter sailboat.

PAINE 14

Ready for some painless daysailing? Renowned designer, Chuck Paine, has something classy and beautiful for you. The Paine 14 (obviously named after the designer) is a trailerable sailboat with exceptional performance and purposely styled after the traditional Herresholf 12 1/2 boat, except for its size. Paine 14 is a lot smaller in all aspects, which accounts for its considerable lightness.

It is fitted with a modern spade rudder and fin keel, giving the boat more agility and speed as she sails. And even with a lead-ballast keel almost her total weight, this sweet, small vessel maintains stability at top speed.

But why is a boat with an old-time appeal be listed among the best daysailers? Simple. It is a blend of the classic old and modern performance. Indeed, it is constructed from cold-molded wood with varnished gunnels and transom, but don’t be fooled by that century-old look.

Chuck Paine worked some modern magic into this cute beauty with the inclusion of a carbon mast and an extremely easy way to attach sails to it. Setting up sail is quick and simple, and you can get it done and over with in only a couple of minutes.

The boat can be gaff-rigged, or you can use a Marconi rig. Got a standard car? That’s all you need to trailer this light sailboat, and you are good to go.

LASER

If you want a sailboat that will get your adrenaline pumping and bring out the competitive sailor in you, perhaps you should take a look at the Laser .

The 13-feet 10-inch Laser boat is not included on the list of the best daysailers for nothing. It is raced both as club races and as an international sailing category, featuring in world-class competitions, including the Olympic sailing championships.

However, you don’t have to take part in a competition to enjoy sailing this boat. And you definitely don’t need it for exercising. The Laser is a great choice even if you simply want to enjoy plain smooth sailing just for fun.

The Laser boat has an incredibly lightweight build with fiberglass and a powerful sail. It is an excellent choice for a single cruiser and works well for two adults, too. Be warned, though. It can easily capsize because it is lightweight, but it will also recover just as fast, too!

The boat is easy to transport, launch, and store, thanks to its kick-up rudder. Laser Performance built this model to have a single sail, two-part mast design, with a daggerboard.

This sailboat is very affordable. Prices start from $7k for new boats, and you can find used ones for far less than that. Check here for Laser boat listings .

You can’t go wrong with a design that has been in existence for over five decades and with more than one hundred thousand boats launched since it debuted in Southern California. The Hobie 16 is a long-lasting design that has stood the test of time and attracts quite a following.

This sailboat weighs only 320 pounds, so it is conveniently trailerable. It has ample room to accommodate a crew of four without straining it. The hulks are built from asymmetric fiberglass sandwich and come with kick-up rudders. This gives you the option of sailing all the way to the beach.

The Hobie 16 is designed to have great speed, thanks to its abundant high-speed gear. But that’s not all. It is also equipped with a spinnaker, a trailer, and a douse kit. The main and jib offer a wide sail area of more than 200 square feet.

Both adults and kids will enjoy having lots of fun in this spacious sailboat, especially in the summer. Little wonder it is one of the very best daysailers available on the market.

The Hobie 16 is a high-performance boat with starting prices for new ones in the $12K range. You can find used ones at a little less. But if you want a simpler, smaller, and more affordable option, take a look at the Hobie Cat Wave . It is not a high-performance design, but it offers loads of fun, too. It comes with roto-molded hulls and fitted with a boomless mainsail. This smaller version costs almost half the price of the 16’s, which is a pretty good bargain.

NORSEBOAT 17.5

NORSEBOAT 17.5

Looking for one of the best daysailers that will stand out from any crowd? The Norseboat 17.5 might just be the perfect sailboat for you. Dubbed as the “Swiss Army Knife of Boats,” this one-of-a-kind sailboat can be sailed or rowed.

But wouldn’t it take a lot of effort to row this boat? No. Not with the boat’s sheer. The fiberglass hull has lots of sheer – a deliberate and apt design to make rowing easy-breezy. So, even if there’s no wind, you can still have fun rowing while getting some exercise in the process. And if the wind is strong enough, you can relax and let the jib and mainsail do their thing.

The Norseboat 17.5 is the perfect choice for daysailers searching for a high-performance boat that comes with beautiful traditional lines. But even if you are a sea kayaker who is looking to move up, or a cruising sailor seeking to downsize a bit, you’ll find this legendary pedigree to be a good fit for you.

Some of its features include a fully battened mainsail, pivoting carbon mast, shallow draft, furling headsail, and a signature curved headboard. The lightweight boat comes with two rowing stations and performs excellently well, whether wind-powered or rowed. Plus, it has plenty of room to stow stuff.

The boat’s light weight makes transportation easy. All you need is a mid-sized car, and you can easily tow it. Storage is equally hassle-free, as the sailboat can fit into any standard garage.

Check out the current listings for Norseboat 17.5 .

FAREAST 18

Traditional daysailers are small sailboats that you can take for a quick spin around the harbor. They lack accommodation primarily because they are not designed for spending the night (it’s even in the name!). But all that has changed over the years, and that distinction is almost non-existent with modern designs such as the Fareast 18 .

The boat is a Simonis Voogd design with incredibly high performance, high speed, low maintenance, and comes at a comparatively affordable price. The mainsail has a fully battened square-top and an asymmetrical spinnaker. This is an excellent choice for buoy racing with enough room for a crew of six to compete.

While you typically will not spend the night in a daysailer, there’s nothing wrong with taking a short break below deck. The boat can comfortably sleep up to three just in case you decide to spend the night on the water.

Fareast 18 design features a foam-core hull/vacuum-infused fiberglass, a carbon-structured contemporary bulb keel, and vacuum-infused foils. This high-tech boat is small enough to be rigged and launched by a single sailor.

Even with only one foot of water, this boat will float with the keel retracted and the rudder off. And it is quite easy to trailer this boat.

If you are in the market for a top-class daysailer, you might as well take a look at the Saffier Se 33 UD . Hennevanger brothers, the designers, threw in a lot of know-how and investment to bring this dream boat to reality. The production facility shows in the vacuum-infused build and quality finish of the boat.

Saffier has a collection of models that range between 21 feet and 37 feet, with each boat thoroughly tested to ensure seaworthiness. Considering the size of these boats, one will naturally assume they will be difficult to sail. But that’s not the case with these boats. Even the largest models can be sailed single-handedly and quite easily.

The Se 33 UD was launched in 2014 and done a sporty design. It sails smoothly in all weather conditions, thanks to its solid sprayhood. The sailboat features a practical self-draining cockpit to expel any water that gets into the boat. Included in the cockpit are a folding transform and two-meter benches. The boat is spacious enough for a crew of four, and you can even take a quick nap below.

This top-class boat is an excellent choice if you have deep pockets. Starting prices are in the range of $150k for new boats. You can also check out the new Se 27 model if you want something that is serious fun. The new models can clock up to 20 knots.

For more on pricing, you can check out listings on these boats.

How to Choose the Best Daysailers – Buying Guide

paine 14 sailboat for sale

With well over a hundred different daysailers on the market, it can be daunting to pick just one. Here’s what to look for when deciding on which open sailboat to buy for yourself or family use.

Ease of Sail

How a boat behaves when the wind blows up can make it easy or difficult to sail. A lot of modern sailboats are incredibly fast and are great for racing, but can be quite tricky to handle.

You want to look for an open boat that is tamer and stable. This is the perfect choice for a family day sailing boat, especially if you want to encourage kids to learn to sail. Look for a boat that is heavy enough to remain stable regardless of the crew’s acrobatics. It should be easy to rig, launch, and sail, even by a single person.

Reliability

While it is okay to take proper care of your boat, it is equally important to choose a boat that is easy to maintain. Go for boats with hulls designed to a beating without breaking down. Pay attention to the sails, too. Select one with tough sails that won’t easily blow out of shape after just one season of sailing.

Choose a Daysailer with Safety Features

Whether you will be sailing alone or with your family, safety should come first. Pick a boat that can cope with trouble in any condition or weather, and both on rivers or open waters. Look for a sailboat with positive foam floatation. Even if the hull gets filled with water or is punctured, the boat shouldn’t sink.

But because you cannot completely rule out manufacturing errors, even the best daysailers with safety designs can still capsize. However, you should look out for one with a “self-rescue” feature. In other words, choose a boat that rides very high even when it capsizes, so that the weight of her crew will quickly get her to recover without external help.

High Performance

Safety and stability are great, but that shouldn’t translate to a dull boat. You want a sailboat that provides safety as much as it offers some level of fun and exciting challenge even with your family on board.

Ample Space

Daysailers are typically small sailboats, but they should provide enough room to suit your purpose. Whether you want to sail with your family or a few friends, choose a boat that can comfortably accommodate the entire crew.

While not a requirement, a few modern designs include overnight abilities. Consider choosing these types if you spend a lot of time in the open water, even if you are primarily using an open daysailer. You never know when you will be tempted to spend the night cruising in the open water.

Paine 14 Amelia

This year’s sailing season was framed by two boat shows, the Main Boatbuilders Show in the spring, held in Portland, and the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, over the long Columbus Day weekend. At both I ran into designer Chuck Paine , and both times he had news about his latest and very lovely creation, Amelia , the first in what he hopes will be a long line of Paine 14s. In the spring, Chuck announced that Amelia , modeled after the Herreshoff 121/2, was soon to be sailing, and not long afterward, photos of her launch arrived on my desktop. In October, the news was that French & Webb , fine craftsmen who hail from Belfast, Maine, would build a mold using the cold-molded Amelia as the plug, and plan to produce the boat in fiberglass. This is good news for Chuck, of course, but it’s good news for the rest of us as well, or at least those of us who live in a harbor lucky enough by be graced by such a pretty little boat. Though I’d rather be sailing one, of course, I wouldn’t mind a bit watching one sail by from time to time. Like Chuck, I hope the guys at French & Webb have a good long run with them.

THE LEVANT 15

Perhaps the single finest sailboat in the world—the LEVANT 15 . If you love sailing and want, and deserve, and can afford, the finest sailboat ever designed and built anywhere in the world, read on. First a few pictures to tantalize you.

paine 14 sailboat for sale

The  LEVANT 15 fits neatly amid Chuck Paine’s growing fleet of elegant, hand-built in America, keel sailboats for the no-longer athletic sailor. Like his recent larger and smaller designs (the PAINE 14 and YORK 18 ) she is styled to honor her famous and gorgeous predecessor, the Herreshoff 12½. But with her fin keel and carbon fiber mast and separate, partially balanced rudder and anti-twistoff jib she is a bit faster and a lot more fun to sail. And far easier and cheaper to maintain. We believe Chuck Paine’s new family-sized keelboats are the finest sailboats of any size built anywhere in the world.

CHUCK PAINE’S FLEET OF ELEGANT NEW DESIGNS: THE LEVANT 15,           THE PAINE 14,            AND THE YORK 18

paine 14 sailboat for sale

THE LEVANT 15 (No, this is not the same boat as the Paine 14 — its owner just chose the same topsides color.)

paine 14 sailboat for sale

THE PAINE 14

paine 14 sailboat for sale

THE YORK 18

Just as Nat Herreshoff would surely have done today, she has a seamless, leakproof and unsinkable hull built of lightweight but super strong epoxy cold molded construction. She is available now from French & Webb boatbuilders of Belfast, Maine. The first six boats have been launched, and two more are under construction. The LEVANT 15 is a floating work of art built by hard-working and hard-to-find American craftsmen who value the quality of your new yacht above all else, as anyone with any intelligence can easily discern from the accompanying photos and drawings.

paine 14 sailboat for sale

Her balanced rudder and efficient fin keel combine with classic topside aesthetics. But the performance is wonderfully superior to all formerly available keel sailboats.

paine 14 sailboat for sale

The LEVANT 15 is a yacht you will once again actually USE.  Just as you used and loved every summer weekend the Blue Jay or Lightning or Snipe or… (insert here) … that you absolutely cherished before the boat salesmen convinced you you’d be sailing off to Tahiti in your dotage. Many of us (including Chuck Paine) have owned a succession of ever larger yachts, but have discovered over time that they required ever greater available time to make use of, crews that were impossible to find, and rapidly inflating yearly expense for marina slips, insurance, maintenance and worst of all, because nobody wants them anymore, depreciation. The  LEVANT 15 is exquisitely designed, built and finished. Quite a few folks bought oceangoing yachts thinking they might owing to their size at least impress their neighbors. The reality is that nowadays you are looked at as a fool if you own a white-elephant that sits unused and fading all summer in a marina slip sucking money out of your pocket. Once you come to your senses and own your  LEVANT 15 your wisdom will be rewarded every time you go sailing, when virtually every person you encounter on the water goes out of his way to come over and shout…“What a beautiful boat!”

The LEVANT 15 is in every possible way optimized for trailering behind a standard-sized automobile. Her carbon fiber mast requires no stays and weighs with its halyards a mere 23 pounds, so it is as easy to deploy as that on a Laser dinghy. Easier, actually, as the sail need not be attached before stepping the mast, and is simply swung up into its authentic bronze Herreshoff-type mast ring, Iwo-Jima style. Chuck has invented a nifty way of using Velcro straps to attach the mainsail to the mast very quickly… no tedious fitting of little slides to little tracks, so the boat can be launched and gotten going in a matter of minutes.

paine 14 sailboat for sale

Strap Closed

This boat’s construction and finish are in a word, exquisite. So it is far from cheap to build, to be honest. But it will retain its value far better than any boat you have ever owned before and will certainly rise in value owing to its rarity and waiting times for acquisition. As an intrinsically valuable hard asset whose cost of replication is rising at a rapid rate, it is a classically cogent hedge against inflation- but one that can be used to hugely enhance your quality of life no matter what the gov-mint does to trash the value of our currency.

In a single phrase, the  LEVANT 15 is “A TRAILERABLE MINI-YACHT.”  At 1000 pounds the yacht is light enough to be trailed behind the moderate sized automobile that you already own—no truck or SUV nor surge brakes are required. Or of course it can live on your mooring or in a marina slip. An optional custom-fitted highest quality galvanized trailer with integral tongue-extender makes launching and retrieving a snap. The carbon fiber mast requires no stays and is simply swung up into place just as is done on the original Herreshoff 12½, excepting that the rigging-less carbon fiber mast weighs only half as much! And in the off-season she fits right into your garage where you can perform the yearly maintenance yourself at near negligible expense, and proudly show her off to your dinner-guests.

The rare yachtsman who desires a daysailor of investment quality is finally blessed with a number of clear choices, all with splendid fit and finish (and commensurate pricetags, which will be soon forgotten as they inflate in value). The available fleet until the introduction of the  LEVANT 15  consisted of the PAINE 14 , Herreshoff and Doughdish 12 1/2, York 18 and Pisces 21.  The LEVANT 15 fills the obvious gap between the Paine 14 and the H12/Doughdish. Given her modern underbody, although she falls halfway between the Paine 14 and Herreshoff 12½  in size, she is the equal and more of the H12 in performance.

Want to see why people love the way this boat sails? Have a look at the following videos of the boat under sail in a light breeze. Turn your speakers on- there is sound.

The yacht is built to order in Belfast, Maine by French & Webb. They take between 6 and 9 months to complete. Six of them have been launched so far. Two more are under construction, and hull number 9 is now available to build. More information about the boat, from its builder’s perspective, may be found by going to www.frenchwebb.com. The demonstrator yacht will come up for sale this winter, at a price 15% less than it can be reproduced for, thanks to covidflation.

A LEVANT 15 for delivery in early 2024 will cost between $90,000 and $110,000 depending upon the specification of hardwoods, fittings and options.

A sailboat for Florida. Until now there were no sailboats both shallow enough and of sufficiently high performance to be usable on the many canals in Florida. So often the wind comes right down the canal, making sailing there either a beat straight to windward or a dead run. Anything can go downwind—even a Styrofoam cup—but tacking successfully to windward in a narrow channel is beyond the capability of most existing sailboats– until now. The LEVANT 15 can be short-tacked to windward in any canal in Florida without effort—no sheet needs to be trimmed.  From this day forward you will begin to see TWO boat lifts at the edge of every canal in Florida. One for your center console, and one for your LEVANT 15!

Appealing options may be easily added. A custom fitted galvanized trailer with a long tongue-extender is the first and perhaps only option most owners will want. A demonstrator exists and awaits your inspection.

‘ZULU’ is a fabulous example of the Sunseeker 115 Sport Yacht and available exclusively through Bristow-Holmes. She is the newest available 115 Sport Yacht for sale in Europe and without doubt the most tastefully finished interior owing to her refit in 2017. Boasting an extensive specification, built for an experienced owner she features 11 berths in 5 cabins. Never chartered and always used privately this is an opportunity not to be missed.

‘ZULU’ is without doubt one of the most striking Sunseeker 115 Sport Yacht’s ever to leave the well renowned British Shipyard. Built in 2013 she benefits from a number of modifications to her standard specification over earlier models. Following an interior refit in 2017 ‘ZULU’ is unlike any other 115 Sport Yacht on the market.  ‘Zulu’s’ Interior woodwork & cabinetry is a combination of Satin Finish Black American Walnut and Wenge complemented with custom tables in Maccassar Ebony, and glass and stainless steel accents. Neutral colour and varied high quality fabrics enhance the décor.

The saloon has been modified to provide a much more homely and comfortable feeling, with folding balconies and sliding glass doors to both Port and Starboard she really opens up, allowing maximum light and air into the space. She accommodates up to 10 guests in 5 En-Suite Cabins.

The Owners Suite on the Main Deck benefits from the trade mark ‘up and over bulwarks’ thus gaining maximum space and privacy. Below decks a further 8 guests can be accommodated in 4 En-Suite Cabins. Two VIP Cabins Aft, a Double Cabin to Port and a spacious Twin Cabin to Starboard.

Crew accommodations are forward on the lower deck with independent crew access. Two Twin Crew cabins and a separate Captain’s cabin. All cabins have ensuite heads, and a Day head is located in the Foyer area main deck

The flybridge boasts a striking Jacuzzi and Sunbathing arrangement as well as dining area for up to 14 guests on the port side and highly popular bar on the starboard side. Built for enjoying life on the water the Sunseeker 115 Predator is one of Sunseeker’s most popular models.

Symmetrical stairs from the aft deck down to the large swim platform provide easy access to the sea and the tender garage which houses a 5.4m tender, and 2 jet skis. The hydraulic swim platform submerges for easy launching of the tender and further toys.

All exterior upholstery has just been replaced along with a re-spray on the stern quarters of the hull, she presents impeccably, viewings are highly recommended.

No expenses have been spared in the maintenance of ‘ZULU’ with the recent completion of her RINA 5 Year Survey being a complete walk in the park.

Bristow-Holmes are delighted to offer ‘ZULU’ For Sale and we’re confident she will sell quickly following her 1,000,000 Euro Price Reduction.

a large white yacht in the water aboard 2018 SUNSEEKER 116 Yacht for Sale

Sunseeker Predator 115

A true sports yacht, the Sunseeker Predator 115 extends the comforts of Sunseeker’s super yachting into an upbeat market. She is built to RINA classification and provides for a guest party of up to ten in five cabins, with a crew of five. For the owner moving up through the range this Predator has a raised wheelhouse and full flybridge and so presents even greater entertainment opportunity, whether in party mode of full bore passage making. This vessel features twin MTU engines matched to shaft drives which allow her to perform up to 26 knots! From the sedan hard top to full beam capped forward sections, the design emphasis is on pace, but sittting at anchor while the tender and skis circle and play (which are securely garaged when under way), or swimmers snorkel from the rise and fall bathing platform, she also enjoys a more peaceful pose.

With more internal space, and similar plan, to the 34 Meter Yacht, the 115 is appointed throughout to the highest standards, be it the AV or AC equipment, with of course individual cabin control of both, and with much of the infrastructure so neatly concealed in the cabinetry, merging with the onboard aesthetic. Another option on the main deck is to have convertible balconies through the bulwark on both sides of the saloon which, when combined with doors from the saloon, make for patio extensions. Another desirable feature of this boat is that it has a main-deck master stateroom which provides for stunning views for the owner. Also, you have the option of having a shower and separate jacuzzi, or a large central walk through shower with additional stowage room. From her daring profile to the design house ceramics, soft touch Italian fabrics and sheen of the chosen wood grain, the Sunseeker Predator 115 is quite a sensation.
