Review of Comfort 30

Basic specs..

The Comfort 30 is equipped with a finn keel. The finn keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.68 - 1.78 meter (5.51 - 5.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Comfort 30 is typically equipped with a Volvo Penta diesel engine at 13.0 hp (9 kW), which gives a max speed about 4.8 knots.

Description.

The Comfort 30 was born on the design table of renowned Swedish designer Rolf Magnusson who was famous for well built, easy to handle and well balanced sailing yachts. The Comfort 30 is similar in looks to the Albin Ballad and the Joker S30 and was built between 1972 and 1980 with over 1000 built. Some were built under licence by Robertsons in Scotland. "Gentrice" is one of these.

She has been well maintained by her current and previous custodians and is well known on the East coast. She receives admiring looks where ever she goes thanks to her hull lines and pale blue hull. She is a lovely boat to sail and will appeal to novice and seasoned yachtsmen alike. Ideal first boat in order to face the rigours of the North Sea or for those looking to downsize without compromising on reliability and comfort.

 Attractive and well appointed interior with beautifully varnished woodwork and navy upholstered seating and berths. Vessel provides berth for 5 over the forward cabin and saloon. Good amount of natural light from the portlights and deck hatches. The saloon is entered from the cockpit via a sliding hatch with washboard system. There are two sets, with a clear perspex set for the summer and a solid set for the winter. Two steps down and you are in the saloon. To port is the well equipped galley featuring a gas fuelled oven with 2-burner hob and grill, a stainless steel double sink with cold fresh water tap. Top loading cool box with insulated lid and additional bin style storage lockers aft. Drawer and additional cupboard storage.

Opposite the galley is the forward facing chart table with 12V switch panel and chart storage. 12V chart reading light and additional cubby storage. Chart seat is the end of a comfortable quarter berth.

Saloon has a central varnished drop leaved table with central bottle storage. Well upholstered settee/berths port and starboard with storage below. Outboard of port saloon seating is what is meant to be a cot berth but is more suitable for additional storage and bedding. Forward of the saloon bulkhead is a heads compartment to port with sea toilet and opposite on starboard side is a wardrobe /hang space. In the bow is the forepeak with double V-berth and infil.

 GRP constructed sailing yacht built by Robertsons of Argyll in 1978. Shoal draft fin keel with skeg mounted spade rudder. Under water areas were antifouled in May 2019. Topsides are pale blue gel coat and in excellent condition. White hull decoration. White gelcoat superstructure with grey painted non slip side decks and coach roof panels. What you will notice about the side decks is how easy they are to get around. This is because the shrouds are all inboard. This makes monitoring the chain plats much easier as well. Flush foredeck with anchor locker. manual windlass with teak mooring bollard. Stainless steel stemhead fitting with double anchor roller. Stainless steel fairleads.Stainless steel bow and stern rails connected by stainless steel stanchions and double set of guardwires. Teak handrails add to safety when moving around the decks in a seaway.

Deep safe cockpit with locker storage to port and aft. Locker tops and cockpit sole attractively finished in "Flexi Tek". Aft locker houses a gas locker with lid and vent outboard. Varnished tiller steering with protective cover. Transom with stainless steel boarding ladder. 

 Vessel is powered by an economical and reliable Yanmar 2GM20 inboard diesel engine. This 2-cylinder, 18hp, sea water cooled unit is situated beneath the companionway steps allowing easy access for servicing and daily checks. Engine start panel in saloon beneath chart table with key and push button start. Audible and visual warning light for high temperature oil pressure and charging. Engine serviced annually with most recent late 2020. Reduction gearbox driving stainless steel shaft and 2 bladed fixed propeller.

Bank of 2X12V heavy duty batteries providing engine start and domestic power. These are fitted with a rotary style selector/isolator switch. The batteries are recharged via the engine alternator, solar panel or onboard Marine Tech battery charger. Vessel fitted with shore power including cable.  

Bermudan sloop, masthead rigged yacht with deck stepped aluminium spars by Proctor. Stainless steel standing rigging replaced in June 2019. Terylene running rigging in good condition. majority of the lines are led aft to the cockpit via a series of turning blocks and deck organisers. This has been replaced on an ongoing basis.

Boom mounted mainsail with 2 reefing points. Mainsail mounted in lazy bag for easey sail handling. Roller furling headsail system replaced in 2019. Roller furling genoa with UV strip.  Spinnaker track on mast. Antal 2-speed, self tailing genoa sheet winches. Lewmar, 2-speed halyard winches.

1983 Olson 30 sailboat, Hull #163, with double axle trailer for sale or trades considered. Trailer has 5 new tires, brakes just gone through, new surge brake actuator. Great phrf racer and daysailer. New North Aramid Technora mainsail (used 7 times!) and brand new UK X Drive 155 genny (used twice! ) with a fairly new roller furler. This boat has 5k dollars worth of new racing sails on her. Spare 150 genny and a delivery mainsail. Two new bulkhead mount compasses, Nautos 39665. Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Full Details

The main engine on Sojourn is a Yanamr 3GM20F diesel engine which has been meticulously maintained and as a result is a reliable "turn-key" motor. While the official engine hours are unknown, the current owners estimate that they have accumulated around 400 hours since completing some significant upgrades and preventative maintenance on the system itself.

The boat offers a 3 blade feathering "featherstream" prop option as well which was recently greased with featherstream grease as well as adding a new prop zinc

As you enter the cabin of Sojourn, the overall first impression is one of cleanliness and pride in caring for and maintaining such a beautiful boat. 

Immediately to port as you descend the cabin steps is the small but efficient galley. It offers a gimballed stove/oven, dual basin sink and a fair sized isotherm refridgeration system built into the countertop.There is an excess of storage above, below, and behind all of the main features of the galley which can allow for an enhanced cooking experience. 

Coming down the cabin stairs, directly to starboard you will notice a neat and essential plotting station. You can find access to a single VHF here, controls to the boat's stereo system, the full breaker system and storage as well as having a place large enough to plot a course on your chart. On the starboard aft bulkhead there is a larger "wet" hanging storage locker right next to the cabin steps. To starboard of the hanging locker and aft of the plotting station is the boats quarter berth as well.

In the center of the cabin you will find a small table with two hinged wings which allow it to more than double in size and accommodate the port and starboard settee's. The port settee is 6' long and actually extends in width while the starboard settee is a respectable 50". Above and below each settee offer multiple storage options on either side.

Starboard side and just forward of the starboard settee is the wet head. It's compact in size but offers everything needed for comfort and is in a pleasantly clean state.

All the way forward and spanning the beam of the boat, you can find the oversized and comfortable V Berth. There is a large storage locker to port just infront of the V-berth as well as matching storage areas on either side of the V berth mattress.

Throughout the entire interior you can find updated LED accent lighting, 12v fans and a number of portholes and hatches. The amount of natural light coming into the boat is refreshing and the ventilhation of the hatches allows to keep the boat at a nice cool temperature.

At first glance as you walk aboard Sojourn, you notice the abundance of teak which has been well maintained over the years as well as the air of pride in which the boat has been kept overall from its current owners. Every hatch and accessory on board is properly and neatly covered with custom matching canvass as well as a newer bimini and dodger.

The helm offers a comfortable and roomy space to navigate from as well as lounging on the custom matching seat cushions.

There is ample storage below the helm seating as well as the gas tank for the stove and oven in the galley.

The navigation station boasts newer updated chart-plotter/GPS (raymarine e-series HybridTouch) which is capable of linking with wifi enabled tablets or smartphones. 

Overall, the deck paint is in great condition and the teak shows very well. Obviously varnishing is a forever ongoing process but the current condition does not require too much work.
