Isabel – Friendship design built for two

' data-srcset=

With the new Friendship 75, the largest of the Friendship fleet, yacht designer Ted Fontaine has once again pushed the envelope in his design for Isabel , an elegant sailing yacht of grand proportions that can be confidently handled by two. Like her sisters, the Friendship 40 and Friendship 53, the new 75-footer combines simplicity of handling and performance with the aesthetics of a classic Fontaine design.

As with the 40 and the 53, Fontaine has once again proven that, when properly designed and equipped, a large and sophisticated yacht can be sailed safely without additional crew, assuring a uniquely intimate sailing experience previously unheard of on a yacht of these proportions. In fact, that was a large part of the design brief for designer Fontaine when he drew up Isabel .

On deck, Isabel shares the styling and ergonomics that are fast becoming a legacy of the Friendship fleet — a low profile house and cabin trunk, functional stern deck, sweeping broad side decks and a clean open foredeck. There are twin L-shaped settees each with their own bright finished tables. Housed in bright finished teak, a fully integrated helm pedestal with destroyer-style wheel is located aft of the guest seating area and equipped with engine controls, low-profile foot controls for bow thruster, main sheet and genoa furling functions. The helm pedestal also houses controls for the Oceanfurl in-boom furling system, boom vang control, throttle and autopilot controls. It is fitted with twin 10-inch pop-up Garmin 5212 display units that function as chartplotter and radar. A Garmin GMR 24 HD radome is mounted on the mast at the first set of spreaders.

Additional navigation equipment includes a Danforth compass, Garmin GSR 22 digital sounder, Garmin Marine Network system interfaced with Garmin GDL 30/30A XM WX/stereo receiver and B&G Hydra Cruise Pack wind instruments.

Controls for the Navtec hydraulic backstay are mounted outboard on the guest cockpit coaming to port and the engine instruments on the coaming to starboard. Primary and secondary Lewmar winches are port and starboard of the helm seat. The aft coaming is fitted with integral line bins for the headsail sheets. The main sheet disappears aft and below decks. The mast and boom are carbon fiber and built by Hall Spars. The standing rigging is from Navtec and the headsail furler a Reckman RF 90-3.

Moving forward from the guest cockpit is a low-profile pilot house — a hallmark of Fontaine’s designs. It has an area for light dining for six, complete with a wet bar and spirits storage. Forward of the wet bar is the nav station with a full complement of display screens, monitoring systems and ship communications equipment.

Below, the yacht’s accommodations feature two spacious guest cabins with en suite head and showers. Situated fore and aft, each cabin has a king-size centerline berth, port and starboard settees, large hanging lockers and flat-screen televisions. There are beautiful built-in bureaus for additional storage. The arrangement assures the owners and guests the utmost privacy. There is also a small starboard cabin amidships complete with en suite head and shower and two single berths should the owners have additional guests or choose to have crew aboard. Directly opposite the crew cabin is a fully appointed galley with a custom stand-up reefer and freezer, trash compactor, Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, GE Profile Spacemaker II microwave oven and Techimpex four-burner marine range. The countertops are Silestone and there is a Miele washer and condensing dryer for light laundry.

Like all of the Friendship fleet, the interior joinery is ornate and world class. The main saloon is large and has exceptional headroom. An entertainment center and bookcase/sideboard flank the forward bulkhead port and starboard. Built of solid teak, the interior furnishings are finished in a high-gloss varnish.

For propulsion, the owners chose a single 250-hp Lugger marine diesel engine type 1066 H turning a 32-inch Bruntons Varifold four-blade prop. The gearbox is Twin Disc type MG 5075 A. Auxiliary power is provided by a Northern Lights 20-kW M8 44 LW 2 genset.

Ancillary equipment includes a Jefa transmission steering system, Lewmar 15-kW (20-hp) bow thruster, Tecma Silence Plus and Silence Plus Short heads, Marine Air air conditioning and a Sea Recovery Ultra Whisper Modular 600-1 watermaker.

For global communications there is a KVH TracPhone FB250 and KVH satellite with wireless modem.

Like her sisters, the 40 and the 53, Isabel is a handsome yacht of uncompromising build and finish. But what is even more important is that with Isabel, Fontaine has once more raised the bar in yacht design, creating a new classic, one that can be sailed safely by two people, yet affords the luxury and accommodation of yachts twice the size.

Port Isabel Hands Yacht Club Restoration to New Buyer

Port Isabel officials’ plans to rehabilitate the historic Yacht Club Hotel came to a close in February, when the city sold the building to a local family.

Laura Martinez said she, her parents and two brothers don’t yet have final plans on what they will do with the property but were moved to purchase and restore it.

“I can tell you what we do is going to benefit the city of Port Isabel and the community,” she said. “We’re passionate people and we’re all very busy, but we feel deeply about the yacht club.”

While it’s the beginning of the revitalization process for the Martinez family, the sale marked the end of about four years of work by city and economic development corporation officials with similar ideas of returning the dilapidated building into a semblance of its former glory.

Ultimately, the city spent about $2.5 million in loan funds and returned grant money meant to help it establish a culinary arts institute that never materialized. The yacht club revitalization is the subject of a forensic audit, expected to be presented to the City Commission this week, that was requested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which awarded the city a grant for the project.

The two-story Spanish Colonial Renaissance building was constructed in 1926 and counted President Warren G. Harding, gangster Al Capone and famed pilot Amelia Earhart as guests during its heyday.

Hopes were high when Port Isabel purchased the Yacht Club Hotel on Yturria Street in 2014 for $750,000 with a vision to turn the crumbling building into a culinary arts institute. Consultant Teresa Fonseca of STAR Consulting projected the development would require a total budget of $5 million.

“This was for the future of the city,” said Joe Vega, mayor at the time. “There are a lot of kids in the area that can’t even afford to drive (to local colleges).”

That same year, the Texas Leverage Fund awarded the Port Isabel Economic Development Council a $2.5 million loan for the project, and the city won a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.

FormerCity Manager Edward Meza was ousted by the City Commission in May 2015.

When Jared Hockema joined the city administration as interim city manager, he noticed the yacht club plan’s shortcomings. Time constraints attached to the federal grant required Port Isabel to break ground on Yacht Club Hotel renovations in the fall.

There wasn’t a permanent funding source, Hockema said, and construction plans hadn’t been drawn up. While the city had been in talks with TexasStateTechnicalCollege about renting the planned culinary institute, there weren’t tenants lined up before it purchased the property.

An independent review of the restoration plan projected the cost of getting the yacht club even minimally ready for tenants at nearly $6.8 million. The February 2015 report from EMC International states, “Based on our 30 years of experience in construction … these values substantially exceed what could be considered a commercially viable project.”

Hockema said he was informed by consultant Petra Reyna that the city was pursuing appropriations from state lawmakers, who were gathered in Austin for the 85th Legislative Session.

Spokesmen for Texas Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. and Rep. Rene O. Oliveira said the legislators had been approached in late March 2015 by Reyna and Vega about getting funds earmarked for the yacht club, but it was considered late in the session and unlikely to succeed.

“We just didn’t have time to get legislative support because of the time it came in,” Oliveira Chief of Staff J.J. Garza said. “Doing a rider like that is very difficult. You’ve got to line up a lot of people to make it happen.”

The city paused plans to move forward with the yacht club renovations in July 2015, and Hockema said Texas State Technical College determined it wasn’t feasible for it to operate a culinary school in Port Isabel.

“People were behind this project because they believed in the city, and they wanted to save this building,” he said. “All of the things you need to develop a project like this really hadn’t been done, and it’s unfortunate because it’s been a pretty big hit to the city.”

Hockema said the $1.2 million federal grant was returned and a $300,000 USDA grant for kitchen equipment was allowed to expire. State loan funds left over after purchasing the yacht club, consultant fees and debt payments were used to shore up a deficit in the city’s budget, he added.

Hockema said Port Isabel will be paying back the $2.5 million loan for another 12 years.

“We can grow out of this situation because it’s all about time,” he said. “As we have some growth, hopefully it’s a smaller and smaller part of our debt.”

The city sold the Yacht Club Hotel to the Martinez family for $430,000.

Vega and Meza are adamant that had the city continued to pursue the project, it would have been successful. The current and former city officials agree about one thing: they are happy to see restoration efforts continue.

+ Design and Construction

The 42' model provides a showcase for several Viking innovations. The windshield is now made from molded fiberglass, eliminating the braces needed for metal frames. This was also the first POD model produced by Viking. Built with a deeper V than on the typical Viking (16.7 degrees of deadrise at the transom compared with 10 or 11 degrees) to compensate for the shorter running length and lighter weight. The additional draft from the V is offset by the shallow running gear of the pod-drives, nestled in protective pockets; the 42 Open floats in 3 feet, 5 inches of water.

  • Modified-V, flared bow, hard chines, lifting strakes and pod pockets
  • Resin infused and vacuum bagged cored composite construction, uses end grain balsa and closed cell foam cores in selected areas for optimized strength and stiffness while minimizing weight
  • Solid fiberglass at the pod drives and hull bottom keel and chines
  • Infused fiberglass fuel and freshwater tanks with fiberglass baffles, balsa coring in sides for stiffness, sealed to the hull with resin foam
  • Laminated end-grain balsa core in hull side, top-sides and transom with port tuna door and 2 swim steps
  • Fiberglass encapsulated foam stringers
  • Vacuum bagged composite bulkheads Main engine room bulkhead, intermediate engine room bulkheads
  • Vacuum bagged end grain balsa core in hull bottom
  • Awlgrip engine room, lazzarette, forward bilge and anchor locker for enhanced and maintenance
  • Blister resistant modified epoxy resin in entire hull skin
  • Custom blended polyester resin used in structural laminates, top-sides, bridges, and hardtops
  • Fiberglass side thru-hulls
  • High performance isophthalic gelcoat for superior gloss, flexibility and outstanding weathering characteristics
  • Hull interior, isophthalic gelcoat top-coated with a durable high gloss polyurethane coating
  • Fiberglass hard-top with StrataGlass aft window enclosure curtains
  • Integrated trim tabs to Zeus pods
  • Custom raised (6") bow rail and extended further aft for safety
  • Bow pulpit with anchor chute
  • Fresh water wash down at bow inside anchor locker
  • Seawater washdown at bow
  • Lewmar V2 Stainless Steel vertical windlass
  • Fortress anchor with 50' chain, 250' rode

+ Broker's Comments

This is the second owner, and she has been cared for with an open checkbook. She had several updates in 2023 including a new Garmin Fantom Radar and New Array, Release sailfish fighting chair, Rupp outriggers, Strataglass aft curtain, new Pod seals, heat exchangers flushed, 1,000 hour engine service completed.

Owner's plans have changed and would consider a late model, 30' center console trade.

A Hidden Gem on the Texas Coast

As one of the oldest cities in the south of Texas, Port Isabel has a lot history.

Port Isabel has taken measures to preserve its long history and now you can enjoy several historical sites. Climb the steps of the Port Isabel Lighthouse for breathtaking views. The Port Isabel Historical Museum covers the history of the town from the Mexican-American war up to present day and the Treasures of the Gulf Museum houses maritime history– including 16th century Spanish shipwrecks. Explore this quiet seaside retreat with these fun, hidden gems.

Queen Isabella Causeway, Port Isabel, Texas

Fish Off a Giant Pier

Even if you’re not a pro angler, you’ll have fun casting your line off Texas’ longest lighted fishing pier. Pirate’s Landing Pier has everything you need for a day of fishing including a bait shop, snack bar with Krispy Krunchy Chicken and restrooms. No worries if you didn’t bring any equipment, you can rent whatever you need to make your big catch.

Pop by the Port Isabel Yacht Club for some vintage photo-ops. The Yacht Club Hotel, built in the 1920s, is an example of Spanish Colonial revival architecture that was popular in California and Florida between 1915 and 1931. The red terracotta tiles, white stucco exterior, tropical landscaping and rooftop cupolas are a throwback to a different time. The club is closed for now but recently came under new ownership and will hopefully be restored.

Other unique picture spots include the Shrimp Boats, visible from South Shore & Port District and the end of Champion St, the El Paseo hiking and biking trails, and of course any of the coastland.

Take a Tour of the Lighthouse

Standing 72 feet tall, the Port Isabel Lighthouse has been a beacon for travelers for over 160 years. The Port Isabel Lighthouse is the only lighthouse on the Texas coast that is open to the public. Pop in for a visit and learn about a piece of Texas history.

From Rancher Town to the Center of a War

The history is really what makes this town. In the mid 1800’s, Port Isabel was a small outpost on the Texas coast. Ranchers made up most of the population. The El Fronton de Santa Isabella settlement served as headquarters for a large Mexican ranch owned by Don Rafael Garcia. Not much happened in the town until war struck.

In 1846, America declared war against Mexico over disputed areas of Texas. The sleepy town of Port Isabel was suddenly near the center of conflict.

Shipping picked up with military and medical supplies flowing into Texas. A navigational light suddenly became a necessity and work on the Port Isabel Lighthouse began.

The lighthouse was finished in 1853 and was used in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. In the late 1880s, it was used for commercial shipping. Commercial shipping to Texas slowed and in the early 1900s the lighthouse was closed. Today, the Port Isabel Lighthouse stands as a historical site and a beacon to visitors.

Port Isabel hands Yacht Club restoration to new buyer

  • Copy Link copied

Jeff Bezos' multi-million dollar yacht, Koru, docks at Port Everglades

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' massive yacht has officially dropped anchor in Port Everglades.

Video captured by NBC6 shows the enormous 417-foot yacht docked in Port Everglades Tuesday weeks after the billionaire announced he was moving back to the Sunshine State, after spending nearly three decades in Seattle.

According to Boat International , the Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, and reportedly cost an estimated $500 million to build.

Bezos stepped down as the CEO of Amazon almost three years ago and said in a social media post that operations for his rocket company, Blue Origin, are “increasingly shifting” to Cape Canaveral, which is about 200 miles north of Miami.

Coincidentally, on Tuesday, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed to NBC6 that the company is searching for 50,000 square feet of leased office space in the Miami area as part of its organic growth over the past few years in the region.

Amazon currently has more than 400 corporate and tech employees assigned to our existing serviced office locations in the Miami area, but this office space would first base location in the city.

In October, Bloomberg News reported that Bezos had purchased a mansion in the area known as “Billionaire Bunker” for $79 million, after buying a neighboring estate for $68 million.

And in an Instagram post, the 59-year-old announced plans to return to Miami — where he spent his high school years — to be closer to his parents and his partner, Lauren Sánchez.

Seattle has been Bezos' home since 1994 when he started Amazon out of his garage.

The Instagram post includes a brief video tour led by Bezos of Amazon's first office, with his father behind the camera.
