Enjoyed Vavi's NYE party at the Catamaran, great place to have the party. Paid the extra $30 for the VIP ticket which gave you an hour and a half on triple decker boat ride around the bay. They had the same hors d'oeuvres and drinks on the boat that they had in the resort. The description of the VIP tickets did say there was to be casino style games on board which was why I purchased it, thought it would be fun. There was no games whatsoever. :( There were multiple rooms with DJ's playing dance music, would have liked to see more variety of music, or a live band would have been nice. The bar included two beers, Cores light and Saint Archer blonde, along with wine, champagne, and your typical well alcohols. There were plenty of places to get drinks and food, plenty of places to hang out indoor and outdoor, and a photo booth. All in all, it was fun, but unless you like to dance for 5 hours there wasn't much else to do besides hang out, which we did.

Great party with many dig rooms to choose from with all kids of styles of music! I absolutely recommend it BUT!!! Take your own pics because they're nowhere to be found! There were many photo booths but no way to obtain the photographs That's the only reason why I didn't give them a 5. Free drinks all night tho

Once again, another great year and my previous review says it all. This really is the best way to spend NYE in SD and I will stress that forking over a few extra bucks for the VIP boat ride is absolutely worth it. This year it was foggy on the bay and very pleasant to hang on the top deck as the music played below. Nice work, VAVI. You've knocked it out the park once again and sent us into 2014 in style. See you next year!

Whoa, whoa, WHOA! VAVI nailed this one! Some friends and I grabbed some tickets in advance for the "VIP package" and really didn't know what to expect. From the moment we approached the front of the Catamaran the organization was excellent and execution was flawless! The staff was directing guests to the appropriate lines, issuing wrist bands (VIP and GA), checking coats and snapping pictures upon arrival. Once we made it through the front door we were handed a Miller Lite and directed to the left. We walked down a long hallway and onto the back lawn which was a "staging" area for the boat ride which was scheduled to depart about a half hour later. There was a bar and servers with excess amounts of food. Literally every time I turned around a potsticker was offered to me... I have a hard time saying no to potstickers. Ahoy... jump on that boat and take her for a ride! Once again, drinks and food were everywhere on the boat! Tables were covered with party favors, glow sticks, hats and neon glasses. We worked our way up to the top level with a huge stained glass ceiling, a DJ, and balloon covering the whole room. Once again there was more boooooooze and lots of dirty dancing. We cruised the bay for two hours and were dropped off where we boarded. The party was in full effect and you could hear the music coming from inside the Catamaran. We grabbed a few more snacks and drinks and worked our way around the hotel. This may be a good time to mention that I never waited two or three minutes anywhere for a drink the entire night and the food kept coming out... that's insane! We posted up in the main room which was definitely the biggest and you could tell by the balloons on the ceiling that it was going to be the place to be for the countdown. We killed some time, ate some more, drank some more, listened to music and found our little corner to ring in 2013. It was nothing short of fantastic... I am going to give BIG PROPS to VAVI for pulling this together. They thought of everything and had eager staff members everywhere and ready to help out. A female guest in our group even commented that a moment that stuck out as memorable to her was when she was in line for the bathroom. Whats so memorable about waiting in line for the bathroom? Well, a VAVI employee noticed the line and came over and instructed where everyone could go for shorted bathroom lines. That's rad! I will most definitely be back to ring in 2014!

I have made it to the Vavi NYE bash a few years in a row now. I will have to say this was the most organized one yet. Last year the lines for drinks were a bit tough to handle, this year was pretty smooth on the wait time. -I got hammered -Danced -Laughed -Hung out on a boat -Counted down -Got a midnight kiss -Somehow woke up with a fridge full of Coconut Water the next morning. Big thanks to the Catamaran and Vavi for another awesome NYE. Hope to do it all again next year.

I was beyond impressed with their NYE extravaganza. Glass of champagne upon entry. Coat Check. Plenty of delicious food, which never ran out. 3 levels of music, dance floors and bars. No lines for drinks. All top-shelf alcohol. Photo Station with fun props! Gorgeous deck with view of fireworks. Gourmet donuts. NYE hats, necklaces, etc provided. Beats any other NYE event I've been too! I'd definitely recommend this for years to come.

This years New Years Eve party at the Catamaran was off the wall! The management and everyone working the event that night were very organized and respectful. I loved the music they played as well! They had 2-3 bars which was very nice and made getting FREE DRINKS easy! Vavi i've got to say, you guys really knocked it out of the park on this one. This was by far one of the funnest nights I've had in a long time. They had coat check, plenty of delicious food and drinks. Also, I loved how they had the ball drop and confetti come down once 12 o'clock striked, it really made the night one to remember. I can't say enough good things about this event, and can't wait to attend more Vavi events in the future. you guys rock!!!

Really fun party and, considering the large number of people, very well organized and executed. I never had to wait for a drink or a plate of food, and the staff were super friendly and helpful - both Vavi staff and Catamaran staff. The atmosphere was fun, lots of really friendly good-looking people, décor was a bit cheesy for sure but hey, its New Year's Eve. The boat cruise was great, but unfortunately it was foggy that night so we couldn't see anything. I enjoyed the casino games though and the DJ on the boat was really good. The only thing is - they didn't tell us that the bar shuts down for like 15-20 mins before the boat docks back at the Catamaran (because they don't want people walking off the boat with drinks since no alcohol is allowed on dock). Would've been helpful to know this, but it's ok - we needed a break from the drinking anyway. Inside the Catamaran - 4 rooms of dancing. The largest room was all EDM music, which can get tiring after a while, a little variety would've been nice. Also, that room was the one with all the balloons on the ceiling so we tried to squeeze in there for midnight but it was nearly impossible - dance floor was so crowded it was ridiculous! We got outta there and went into the next room over which was just as fun and way less people. The DJ's were all good - some better than others IMO. I would've preferred more "dance" music like hip hop or top 40 stuff. While they did play some, most of it was somewhere in the house/EDM/techno category. Regardless, we danced the whole night and had a blast! A few suggestions to Vavi for next year: 1. Better beer selection - SD is the beer capitol of the country, you can't just be serving Miller beers...and that Red's apple stuff was gross. Gotta get some local brews! 2. Better food selection - I would say that the quality of the food was somewhere on par with a fast food joint. Soggy buffalo "Wings" aka chicken balls didn't even taste like chicken. 3. Better party favors - step it up just a little bit - many of the favors came out of the packages already broken, and the glow sticks were the absolute worst - they leaked that glow fluid all over us! what a mess! I would suggest quality over quantity. You don't have to have 1000 diff types of favors, just having a few quality hats/noisemakers/glow sticks would have been better. 4. There were lots of great photo booths and photographers all over the place - but where are the photos? Only one photo booth actually gave you photos to take home. no idea where the other photos can be found (ie photo at entry, etc). Would be nice to know. Overall, we had a great time! I would recommend this party to friends for sure.

Wonderful property. Rooms were dated but clean and comfortable. The temp would be cold at night and warm days and the room stayed at a comfortable temp. The best part of our stay was the restaurant. We had brunch on the outside patio by the bay and it was excellent. I can't wait to go back just for this. Great service, to die for food, loved the mimosa's!! It is within walking distance to the beach and a boardwalk of great restaurants. We tried Pacific Beach Alehouse and World Famous. We ended up at World Famous for the rest of our dinners during this stay. Other than eat on this vacation I did spend a day at the Catamaran Spa. Staff was wonderful. My massage was great! Locker area was clean and the attendant was amazing. Ended up buying their shampoo and conditioner just for the smell. Very relaxing waiting area. We can't wait to go back!

Helpful staff. Great location. Clean rooms, though dated. But house keeping did a wonderful job keeping toiletries and towels replenished as well as beds made. Take your own pillow, pillows were not very comfortable. Our 'garden' room (215, second floor, back of the hotel) was actually a view of the pool which was noisy at night until close at 10pm, which can be hard if you have a young family that goes to bed early. The hot tub was wonderful and the pool water was warm (heated) but the pool does lose the sun at 3pm and there is no laundry on site in case, you're traveling with little ones and might need that and forget to ask before you book... like I did. The grounds of the hotel are a little bit awkward to navigate.. but well maintained. The birds/ducks were fun to watch. All in all, a great week long get away!

Shared a wonderful lunch meal there with friends. Outside patio is lovely and the view of the bay adds much charm. Our waitress Denise was friendly and very helpful. She remembered my friends from an earlier visit in October. We will be back here in February 2014.

We checked in at approx. 5:00. Our room was not ready. We were quite surprised and were told it would be 10 minutes. We sat and waited. We were all pretty tired, especially my son. After 30 minutes and 4 agitated travelers, I checked again (after waiting in a long line) and our room was still not ready. They suggested that we go have a drink. We didn't want a drink We had already taken turns walking around as 1 person had to keep an eye on the bags. After an hour and 15 minutes, I was pretty hot under the collar and pretty much demanded a room since check in time had long passed and our room should have been ready! Plus we were super hungry! The front desk stalled us for a good 7 minutes while our room was being readied before finally checking us in. The manager finally came over and did offer us a free dinner in the restaurant minus alcohol. We don't drink so that was fine and the dinner was really good. Other than that and a rude front desk the entire stay, we enjoyed the pool and the hotel and the birds very much. The weather was not great but the pool was warm so we spent a lot of time there. I also will say that we got an exceptional price on the room/plane rate and so really could not complain much at the rate we got. We were there at a slow time and many many rooms were empty so the staff may have been slacking a little but we like to be left alone on vacation so that was fine. I would probably stay somewhere else because I like to try different places but if someone was paying and said they booked this hotel, I would be fine with that too.

Thank you for your comments and we apologize for your check-in experience. Having trouble checking in after a long day of travel is the last thing you should have to worry about and we are sorry you had to wait for your room. Upon reading your review, our guest services team is looking into the matter and will find a way to make sure an internal breakdown in communication affecting our guests doesn't happen again. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your dinner at The Atoll, but, granted, we should have offered it to you even sooner. Also, we are surprised and saddened to read that you felt the front desk team members were rude. That is simply unacceptable and your review was used at a recent meeting to remind them of that. As for your luggage, please never hesitate to leave your bags with the bellman. The luggage room is always locked and under close supervision. We hope you'll consider giving us another chance down the road.

We went for a quick weekend getaway. The resort property is nice. Parking is somewhat expensive ($17/night for tiny spots.) Rooms are honestly in need of a lot of updating - but it was all clean! Beds were comfortable and we slept well save some noise from our neighbors upstairs that spent a considerable amount of time on their patio. Our room was in the Tower (stay there...not one of the 100-200 buildings,) and had two full beds that were very comfortable although small (they said we were getting Queen beds.) Our room had an INCREDIBLE view of the marina/bay. Sunrises were spectacular. The small patio was nice but definitely not something I'd like to spend a lot of time out on - but for a few minutes of taking in the view/air...perfect! The staff was nice - but not all of the staff have their act together. The front desk staff smile and try to be very helpful, but when it comes right down to it you need to deal with the specific area of the hotel you have questions with. One example was housekeeping. Our room didn't have any soap/shampoo/kitchen towels and many other items you'd expect to find stocked in a room set up like ours. I called the front desk and waited hours...nothing. I called housekeeping directly and had our missing items in 15 minutes. Another example is the "included breakfasts" you can buy with your room stay ahead of time in a package deal. On Sunday they have a brunch and we asked the front desk if we could use the breakfast voucher on Sunday towards the price of 2 brunches instead of just ordering off the breakfast menu...we were told not once but twice "no." When we went to the restaurant on Sunday, the restaurant Manager immediately said "of course we can do that!" Sure made a lot of extra revenue for the hotel, right? So that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. Getting us checked in/out courteously and with wonderful smiles? They did that just fine - but don't rely on the front desk for anything else. Regarding the food - the restaurant is pricey but Saturday's breakfast was outstanding (as was the service.) The Brunch on Sunday was AMAZING! More food than you could ever throw a stick at...seriously! Don't eat heavy the night before!! WE didn't eat the entire rest of the day after that brunch! :) Saturday night after attending a beer-fest on the beach we ended up in the room around 630pm. An hour later we were too tired to leave the room and called the concierge/Nick (?) He gave us the name of a great pizza place to call and they delivered a pie right to our room within 40 minutes. Both days we were there we took advantage of the fitness center. They have "some" treadmills an eliptical and one bike literally outside in a patio area that is cramped but you're working out while literally feet away from a beach. There's a smattering of other machines/weights inside. You have to go through the spa check in desk in order to use the fitness center. They do have some wild birds that you can gander at along with the grounds that again are very nice. There are some very large mallard ducks walking around that obviously know no fear of humans and it was kind of funny to walk around a corner and have to ask a duck "excuse me." The hotel is in walking distance to a Ralphs/Frys food store along with a Starbucks as well. It's only a short 1 or 2 block walk directly across the street and you're at the Ocean! This hotel definitely excels in location. There's a walkway behind the hotel that you can take in either direction that covers the marina/bay and I believe if you head North you can loop around to the ocean. All in all, I really did love the hotel. Just needs some minor tweaking. But what doesn't? :)

San Diego New Years Eve Fireworks: CANCELED

Unfortunately, the city of San Diego has not been displaying fireworks on New Year’s Eve for a few years now. But that does not mean you won’t have a blast anyway. Take a look below for the top things to do on New Years Eve in San Diego.

However, there are still some places to watch the sparkly lights explode in the night sky to ring in the new year:

SeaWorld: The amusement park does a special New Year’s Eve fireworks show at a family-friendly time (9 PM). Hotel Del Coronado: They have a fantastic New Year’s Eve Dinner Gala and attendees and visitors can watch the fireworks on the beach (9:40 PM)

A few years back, we booked a suite with a balcony on a high floor of the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina . Then we invited a few friends in to celebrate the New Year with us. Hello I thought I was reading an article from last year. I do not understand why you would make these recommendations right now. The medical field is suffering to take care of us. And I’m sorry but you seem so blasé for making these recommendations Telling people to go out and do these things??!! I guess everyone is entitled to there opinion. And there’s free press. But far as I see this to be considered stupid press.

I know it’s been difficult as everything is such a moving target this year with COVID-19. I hope the information is helpful for you in planning a much different New Year in 2021. Unlike in Europe and the U.S., where New Year marks the end of the festive period, in Russia the 31 st December is just the beginning and kicks off the holidays that fill those first cold weeks of January. Journey to christmas.

Moscow’s largest celebration is the ‘Journey to Christmas’, with festive events held for several weeks from December to January all over the city. There are fun events for all ages and interests – kids’ shows for the little ones, music for Moscow’s young people, ice rinks and slides for the adventurous ones, markets for foodies, the list goes on… Each of the 27 festival sites around Moscow has a different theme based on Christmas and New Year’s traditions from around the world. Some of the highlights of 2021/22’s Journey to Christmas include:

• Merchant Christmas at Revolution Square: one of the richest and brightest celebrations in the capital. The theme of this year is medieval Moscow merchants and boyars, so you can expect lots of red, gold and furs, and traditional Russian-style pavilions and decorations peddling festive foods and fun, located in the very heart of Moscow. 
• Christmas Masquerade Ball on Tverskaya Square: have your masks at the ready (yes, those ones too…) to visit the Christmas Masquerade Ball in front of the Moscow City Hall on Tverskaya Square. Decorated with illuminated archways, fir trees, nutcrackers, masquerade masks, and a homely centrepiece with a fireplace and candles, this is sure to warm the heart of anyone who visits!
• Scandinavian Christmas on Novy Arbat: get some holiday hygge on the Novy Arbat, where four festivals merge into one on this sweeping street. Here you’ll find a mini forest of decorated Christmas trees, cute, Scandi-style pavilions, and a beautiful carousel at the centre.

Moscow’s most famous festive fair takes place on Red Square. The GUM Fair, organised by the famed department store, is the perfect place to bathe in festive cheer and stock up on New Year’s and Christmas treats with a backdrop of the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral. Here you can find national souvenirs such as decorated felt boots, knitted mittens, Orenburg and Pavlovo Posad shawls and other artistic folk crafts, and warm up from the cold with mulled wine, aromatic sbiten (a honey drink), Russian pancakes, fried Bavarian sausages, Viennese waffles, hot chestnuts and other delights.

At this year’s party, the City of Crystals, guests will celebrate like imperial aristocrats: the program includes ballet, singing and magic performances, traditional Russian plays, an impressive raffle, and DJ sets so you can dance the night away – all with a view of the snow-covered Moscow Kremlin unfolding below. The entertainment will be accompanied by a gastronomic journey of luxury delicacies from across the world – from tuna tataki with truffle ponzu to Kamchatka crab salad with sturgeon caviar. And of course, the champagne will be flowing all night long!

Royal Night at the Baltschug Kempinski Hotel

See in the New Year in style at the Kempinski’s Royal Night parties in the Baltschug Grill & Café Kranzler, Panoramic Moskva, and the Library Room.

• A buffet dinner, French champagne and Russian vodka awaits guests in the Baltschug Grill & Café Kranzler. Also on the menu is a DJ set and festive show programme. 
• The Panoramic Moskva ballroom is a truly opulent setting for your celebration, offering sweeping views over the Kremlin, Red Square and St Basil’s Cathedral. Guests will enjoy a gala dinner of Russian and European cuisine to a background of festive live music, and can enjoy the magic of Red Square’s fireworks from the comfort of the ballroom.
• Kempinski’s New Year’s gala in their signature Library Room is something a little more special. Guests can enjoy the gourmet buffet and sip free-flowing champagne, vodka and whisky while dancing the night away to a private DJ. Best of all – the Library Room spills out onto a panoramic terrace, offering the ultimate picture-postcard views over Red Square and the Kremlin.

All these New Year’s packages include a complimentary overnight stay on 31 st December and late check out at 3pm. Baltschug Grill package costs 49,500 roubles per person; Panoramic Moskva package 78,000 per person (also includes a Royal Festive Breakfast with Prosecco from 8am to 1pm on 1 st January); Library Room package 96,000 roubles per person (also includes Royal Festive Breakfast).

Festive bonanza at Turandot

Moscow’s elite restaurant, Turandot, is famous for its extravagant celebrations over the festive period. And this year’s certainly don’t disappoint!

The theme of Turandot’s New Year’s party is the gloss, glamour and fun of the 1970s disco! Legendary New York nightclub Studio 54 meets Moscow party vibes, with live music from Sergey Lazarev and Christina Orbakaite, a cocktail-and-disco-glam dress code and a 6-course chef’s menu. Ticket prices are not for the faint of heart, ranging from 55,000 – 199,000 roubles per person, but this truly will be a New Year’s like no other in one of Moscow’s most fashionable restaurants.

If you’re more of an early bird than a night owl, then Turandot’s Christmas Brunch has you covered. It is held from the 7 th -9 th January to celebrate Old Russian Christmas. Pan-European and Asian cuisine and an open bar await you, with dishes including traditional Russian salads and pancakes with crab, champagne sauce and caviar, and you’ll dine in the spectacular Florentine Courtyard, surrounded by unique palace interiors decorated in chinoiserie style. Brunch costs 6,950 roubles including alcohol per adult, 2,450 roubles for kids up to 12 years old.

New Year’s at the Metropol Hotel

One of the most historic hotels in Moscow invites you to its illustrious New Year’s celebration, which promises a fully immersive experience of light, sound, music and dancing. A live band and DJ set will keep the party going, and a ballet performance and magic show will ensure that the excitement doesn’t stop even for a moment. With a festive menu designed by chef Andrei Shmakov and unlimited alcoholic drinks, guests can eat and drink to their hearts content. Little guests are looked after, too, with a kids’ entertainment program.

Tickets start from 55,000 roubles. The night kicks off with a welcome reception at 8:30pm, and the New Year’s celebration begins at 10pm.

Fantastic fireworks.

Holding glorious firework displays on holidays has been a Russian tradition since the times of Peter the Great – New Year without fireworks is like New Year without a tree or Olivier Salad! There are locations all over the city where Muscovites can enjoy the beautiful show, but the main firework display begins at midnight on Bolshoy Zamoskvorechy Bridge next to Red Square. Those lucky enough to be in nearby parks, squares and streets will experience 50,000 fireworks released into the sky, a dazzling display welcoming 2022. As this is the most magnificent display in the country, the surrounding streets are packed. Many Muscovites choose to watch the display on television, or head to smaller, but no less wondrous displays elsewhere in the city:

Aside from these, Moscow’s famous parks make the most of the frozen temperatures to open ice rinks. They include Gorky Park, Izmailovsky Park, Sokolniki Park and Babushkinsky Park. If you prefer a more adrenaline-filled activity, then you’re in luck – ice slides are hugely popular in Russia, and the best ones can be found on Red Square, in the Hermitage Garden, VDNKh, Luzhniki, Bauman Garden, Sokolniki Park and Izmailovsky Park.

Hong Kong celebrates New Year's Eve with fireworks display resumed after five years

HONG KONG — Thousands of people gathered across Hong Kong's Victoria harbor, as the city welcomed the new year with a fireworks display that was last seen in 2018.

The display lasted for about 12 minutes long, which officials say was the "biggest-ever" in history, with many hiking up to the Victoria Peak to catch a glimpse of the fireworks.

The show had been cancelled due to the antigovernment protests in 2019, and the pandemic in the subsequent years.

China celebrates New Year's Eve but Shanghai Disneyland cancels fireworks display due to air pollution

Cities across China welcomed 2024 with fireworks displays and by releasing colorful balloons.

But the Shanghai Disney Resort canceled its fireworks display, titled "Ignite the New Year," because of the “severe air pollution,” the resort said in a statement.

Visitors were entitled to compensation, such as afternoon tickets, which would allow them to enter the park to watch the regular fireworks display, the resort said yesterday on its official Weibo, Chinese equivalent to X.

As of 3 p.m. local time (2 a.m. ET) yesterday, the Air Quality Index reached 215, marked as “severe pollution,” according to the state media, citing Shanghai’s real-time air quality release.

The resort received some backlash on Chinese social media platforms, but many supported its decision, calling it “reasonable” with “adequate compensations.”

West Coast welcomes 2024 with spectacular firework displays

The iconic casinos and hotels of the Las Vegas Strip were illuminated by a lavish, 8 minute-long firework display as the western United States rung in the new year.

Tourists and residents packed along the temporarily pedestrianized Las Vegas Boulevard, some waiting for hours to claim their spot to watch the show.

Elsewhere, the usual fireworks lit up the skies from Los Angeles to Anchorage as Americans in the west of the country said goodbye to 2023.

Vehicle drives wrong way down New York street, injuries reported

Three police officers and at least one civilian have been taken to the hospital after being struck and injured by a vehicle driving the wrong way down a New York street, police said.

It was not immediately clear why the vehicle was driving the wrong way down Manhattan’s 7th Ave. at 1:34 a.m. local time, the New York Police Department told WNBC, the city’s NBC-owned station.

The vehicle also struck a food truck. All of those injured were in a stable condition with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

One million people attend Sydney Harbor NYE fireworks display

About one million people attended the New Year’s Eve celebrations at Sydney Harbor in Australia last night, a spokesperson of the City of Sydney told NBC News.

Around 250,000 went to the 49 vantage points designated by the city, where people could enjoy better views of the fireworks display, the spokesperson said via phone call, adding that the grand total was one million, equivalent to one-fifth of the city’s residents.

Australia is one of the first places that welcomed 2024, 16 hours before New York City.

Times Square revelers ring in New Year

An estimated 1 million people celebrated the New Year in New York City's Times Square overnight, and there appeared to be no major incidents, authorities said.

The New York Police Department's public information office said its initial assessment turned up no major responses. The possibility was a concern after a man allegedly attacked three officers with a machete outside a Times Square security checkpoint last year.

More than 1,000 officers were assigned to the event, and they were assisted by drones that beamed real-time video to their smartphones in 5K quality, police said.

The number of arrests in and around Times Square was not yet available, the public information office said.

Celebrants rang in 2024 with optimism by writing their wishes on small notes via the NYE Wishing Wall. Thousands if not millions of the colorful notes were then released as confetti when the ball dropped at midnight.

New Year’s Wishes: Messages of hope written on Times Square confetti set to fall at midnight

When the ball drops, thousands if not millions of written life goals will help bring purpose to 2024 when they flutter in the air on Post-it-style notes that will double as Times Square confetti.

The NYE Wishing Wall , launched one month ahead of the big night, beckoned visitors to New York City to write down their wishes for the new year. Handwritten notes included "My wish is to be a Broadway star" and "My wish is for my mom to have a blessed life."

Those dreams hit the air at midnight.

NYPD hopes drones will help it keep NYE party safe

New York police are deploying drones over Times Square amid New Year's Eve celebrations, hoping the evolving technology could help identify potential attackers and forecast crowd movement.

Assistant Police Commissioner Kaz Daughtry gave a tour of three of the drones being used tonight to monitor Times Square celebrants, saying the devices bring state-of-the-art technology, including real-time 5K monitoring, to the effort to keep New Year's Eve safe.

Officers on the ground can tune in to drone video via smartphone, Daughtry said, while the aerial robots scan the 1 million-attendee event to detect anomalies in the crowd, medical emergencies and crowd movement.

"We can look for any type of anomalies in the crowd, any suspicious people, any suspicious person," he said.

The American Civil Liberties Union has long expressed concerns that drones can be used to violate privacy rights and track people, such as police critics, whose messages authorities don't necessarily want to celebrate.

The police department first used drones to help monitor New Year's Eve celebrations in 2019, after its planned deployment in 2018 was canceled by rain.

New Year’s Eve celebrations roll across Asia, but wars cast a shadow on the start of 2024

Revelers across Asia celebrated the countdown to midnight on New Year’s Eve with fireworks and brightly lit signs — offering a hopeful start to 2024 for some, even as the globe’s ongoing conflicts raised security concerns and led to muted or even canceled festivities.

As the clock struck midnight in Australia, more than 1 million people — a number equivalent to 1 in 5 of the city’s residents — watched a 12-minute fireworks display focused on the Sydney Harbor Bridge from the shore and from boats in the harbor.

“It’s total madness,” said German tourist Janna Thomas, who had waited in line since 7:30 a.m. to secure a prime waterfront location in the Sydney Botanic Garden.

Organizers worldwide have readied for large-scale celebrations despite the wars in  Gaza  and  Ukraine . In New York City, where there have been near-daily protests sparked by the Israel-Hamas war, officials and  party  organizers said they were prepared to ensure the safety of tens of thousands of revelers who will flood Times Square in the heart of midtown Manhattan.

Times Square revelers will see changes at New Year's Eve celebration

Crowds making their annual pilgrimage to New York City’s Time Square tonight in hope of watching the ball drop at midnight can expect some changes as authorities aim to keep disruptions to a minimum.

“We’re expanding our zone from Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue, from 41st Street to 57th Street,” New York police Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said at a briefing Friday. “That gives us a buffer zone so we can move quickly if we have to like last year, and also it gives us a space between protesters not to come in here.”

There are no specific threats to this year’s event, but Maddrey noted that police are staffing more than a thousand officers for the celebration, including the usual K-9 and counterterrorism units typically on hand. Mayor Eric Adams praised the city's handling of tensions in recent weeks, particularly with regard to maintaining peaceful protests.

“We have witnessed that there’s a small number of people who are trying to embed themselves in some of the protests and bring about disruption,” Adams said. “It’s not going to be tolerated. It’s not going to be accepted.”
