Yours for €2.75 million – Mariquita, the elegant and glamorous 125ft Fife design

  • Elaine Bunting
  • December 1, 2015

Mariquita, one of the best examples of William Fife's 'big class', is on the market, 104 years after she was launched

Mariquita, the Fife designed 19 Metre from 1911

Not very often does a yacht come on the market that has such a storied history behind her. Marquita, the glorious Fife design, one of the most elegant yachts in the classics circuit, is on the market and yours for €3.5 million.

She is for sale through Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage .

Mariquita dates back to some of the grandest days of yachting. She is is one of the most historic and interesting of the Fife designs, a 19 Metre, 125ft LOA and launched in 1911.

Built as yard no 595 at the W. Fife and Son yard in Scotland, Mariquita would originally have been intended only to last for a few seasons’ hard racing.

The Metre rule was conceived to cater for all pockets, and fleets of 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15, 19, and 23 metres were built in varying numbers, the 8s being the smallest to follow the social circuit around the UK during the summer months. Many of the larger racers would become cruising yachts in later life but only a few of these classic cutters have survived and most have now been restored.

Mariquita, the Fife designed 19 Metre from 1911

Mariquita, the Fife designed 19 Metre from 1911

Mariquita was restored over two years at Fairlie Restorations in the UK in 2004, as the ravages of time had eaten deep into her structure of steel and Honduras mahogany planking, but at their hands the standard of build and finish surpassed her original launch day in 1911.

Mariquita is the only surviving 19 Metre Class yacht and the oldest of only four remaining of the metre class ‘big class’, the others being the 23 Metre Class ‘Astra’ (1928), ‘Cambria’ (1928), ‘Candida’ (1929).

Mariquita, the Fife designed 19 Metre from 1911

Sailing her is a joy and an art. Displacing 78 tons, Mariquita reaches hull speed at around 12.5 knots and is steered by a small diameter traditional wheel. The weight on the helm is surprisingly high, a far cry from modern steering systems and fingertip control.

Some 3400ft2 of the 6260ft2 of total upwind sail area is taken up by the mainsail and the 71ft main boom is sheeted to the counter deck with a 6:1 mainsheet system hauled by seven crew. Centring the mainboom for a gybe is said to be a humbling experience for the unfit.

Once trimmed, a stopper cord is wound around the sheet to take the strain before it can be made up on a bronze bollard. From this the trimmer can ease the sheet when required, and if this all sounds complex, remember there are seven sails to handle and each with its own techniques to master.

Mariquita, the Fife designed 19 Metre from 1911

One can just imagine a day’s racing at Cowes Week in 1911 with all sail set in over 20 knots of breeze in the company of equally powerful boats. Sails and topmast would be expendable and regularly broken, no quarter would be given or expected from the opposition, and as a crew member you could not expect an early rescue if you slipped overboard.

The contrast with modern boats, equipped with pulpits and guardwires, is extreme, adding to the thrill of sailing a yacht that can only be operated by a highly experienced crew under firm command.

Mariquita, the Fife designed 19 Metre from 1911

Not surprisingly, there is a thirst to relive those heady days and try to understand the people who made it happen. When designers such as Nicholson, Mylne and Fife cajoled their owners to spend some of their fortunes, they could not have imagined that that well over 100 years later their creations would be still draw admiring looks, still be the treasure of owners and raced with gusto and glamour of their own era.

Historical:

O ne of the most beautiful vintage yachts sailing today, was built for industrialist Arthur Stothert. MARIQUITA was designed by William Fife III, and built and launched by Fairlie on the Clyde on Saturday May 6th, 1911…coming to rest alongside her sistership CORONA

Prince Albert Edward having retired his yacht BRITANNIA from competition 1896, left a void in “Big Class” racing until MARIQUITA was launched in 1911,  joining OCTAVIA, CORONA, and NORADA in this resurrected new class just before World War I.

The “Great 19s” brought an unexpected high level of close racing, sometimes finishing half day races within seconds of each other. As good as the racing was, with the threat of war in 1913, brought an immediate end of racing. OCTAVIA was first put up for sale, by her then owner William Burton, with MARIQUITA changing hands in 1915 , marking the official  end of “Big Class” racing.

MARIQUITA spent the war years in neutral Norway. She returned to Great Britain after the war and was brought to West Mersea by Arthur Hempstead, whose firm undertook the decommissioning. Her fine mast was chopped away above the deck, her keel bolts let go and 40 tonnes of lead cut into scrap on the Mersea hard. The hulk of the once beautiful yacht was towed to Woodbridge on the Deben and in 1958 moved to Pin Mill, on the Orwell, remaining there as a house boat for some 30 years. Bow in to the river bank, moored with chains and supported between four very large posts, at high springs she would float, settling again – not always level as the tide went out. It was from Pin Mill in 1991 that William Collier and Albert Obrist intervened leading to her landmark restoration at Fairlie Restorations. Taken round to the Hamble on a Thames lighter, work started on the restoration in 2001.

After years of painstaking work the restored MARIQUITA finally appeared in 2004. With the restoration, her owners sought not only to save a unique yacht, but also the quality ethos to which she was built and raced originally in 1911. The MARIQUITA project was one of the most professional and well-resourced classic yacht programmes ever undertaken.

Following her re launch she started on a highly successful nine year campaign and was to star in numerous regattas, winning Imperia and looking great alongside the likes of the MOONBEAMs III and IV. Wintering in San Remo MARIQUITA then headed for Greece for 2 months of cruising and race training with the owner. She went on to attend five classic regattas, including the new Porto Rotondo event and the renowned Voiles de St Tropez. In June, 2008 she attended the Fife Regatta on the Clyde and then took part in other regattas on England’s south coast.

2011 marked her centenary with a busy race season with eight more regattas; Ajaccio, Antibes, Barcelona, Palma, Mahon, Monaco, Cannes and St Tropez.

In 2012 MARIQUITA visited the UK again for the Westward Cup in Cowes, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on the Thames and the Pendennis Cup in Falmouth. She then returned to the Mediterranean for the end of season regattas there. It was in 2012 however that MARIQUITA was unexpectedly offered for sale. The syndicate that eventually purchased her was helped somewhat by inheriting a number of her existing crew as where everything is done by hand on such a complex yacht working as a team is paramount. Of course it took time for the crew to bed in but by the fourth regatta in Barcelona the skipper George Newman was seeing signs of real improvement. Despite some dramatic conditions in both Mahon and Cannes and some very close racing with her great rivals MOONBEAM IV and CAMBRIA, MARIQUITA arrived in Saint Tropez for the final regatta of the season in good shape with six podium finishes under her belt.

Her 2014 season ended with even better results – after winning overall the Big Boat class in the Panerai Grand Prix, MARIQUITA then went on to come second in Les Voiles de St Tropez, behind the mighty gaff schooner ELENA. She is now ready to be passed on to her next custodian.

Fast forward to 2015 to find MARIQUITA locking horns with ELEONORA and SUMURUN once again on the Solent coming out on top during an exciting week of sailing for the Panerai British Classic Week at Cowes. After recording three 1st and two 2nd places her owner and helmsman John Caulcutt was of course delighted with another regatta win saying “The crew have adapted to the windy and tidal Solent conditions this season with great skill. MARIQUITA has performed really well – I couldn’t be happier with another successful week on the water”.

Known Restoration History:

1991 – Fairlie Restorations rescued Mariquita from a “Mud Berth” at Pinmill on the Orwell, where she was being used as a Houseboat. 2001 – Fairlie Restorations completely rebuilt, launched 2004

Mariquita - the immortal sailing classic

The yachts of the "golden era" are distinguished by their exquisite appearance and their history. Mariquita is no exception. Dive into the history of the yacht with Interparus!

living history

Mariquita was built back in the "golden days of yachting" - 1911. The 38-meter yacht is still on the move and is a fragment of that very era of classic yachts. Marine designer and architect William Fife III was responsible for the design of the yacht.

At the shipyard W. Fife and Son, Mariquita was built under the number 595. From the very beginning, the new yacht was created for only a few seasons of intense regattas. No one thought about what future the new creation of the shipyard would have.

To date, Mariquita is the last surviving yacht of the 19 metre class. In addition, the yacht belongs to the so-called. "big class". In this class, she remains one of only four surviving yachts. Other 23-meter "Astra" (1928), "Cambria" (1928), "Candida" (1929).

Until the Second World War, the yacht passed from hand to hand, retaining its former elegance and beauty. However, the war made its own adjustments - Mariquita was sold to a company that specialized in building floating houses. As soon as the yacht fell into the hands of the representatives of the company, the rigging and sails, the mast, the keel ballast were almost immediately removed from it and laid up. Mariquita spent the next 40 years on a clay jetty.

Mariquita reconstruction

In 1991, the yacht was found in poor condition, but she was still underway. In 2004, the British company Fairlie Restorations took up the restoration and reconstruction of the boat. Some elements of the hull required repair or replacement.

The main problem was the destruction of the steel parts of the skeleton of the yacht, the lack of a keel and wooden trim. However, the steel and wood of the boat served their minimum several orders of magnitude longer than planned. There have been no major alterations to the hull since the construction, that is, 93 years.

After the reconstruction, Mariquita again went to sea. Her glorious racing history received a new round - the yacht took part in many regattas. Among the most famous were Monaco Classic Week, Regates Royales Cannes and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. In 2014, she took home the Big Boat Panerai Trophy.

Mariquita control features

Mariquita has a displacement of 78 tons. The maximum speed of the sailing yacht is 12.5 knots. Unlike modern boats, the Mariquita's helm is quite heavy.

Mariquita has 580 m2 of sails. In total, the yacht carries a set of seven sails. Thanks to the fine tuning of each sail, as well as the racing profile of the hull, the yacht is excellent on the water in any weather and handles well.

The bulwark on the boat is very low, there are no handrails. This makes traveling on the Mariquita more extreme than on many modern yachts. The yacht is a typical representative of the sailing racing boats of the early 20th century, with all the consequences - beautiful design, excellent driving performance and appropriate crew safety conditions.

Fife yacht mariquita offered at no reserve at artcurial retromobile paris.

Fife yacht Mariquita offered at no reserve at Artcurial Retromobile Paris

1911 Mariquita by William Fife & Sons No reserve - Estimation 900,000 - 1,700,000 €  UK registered

- Last surviving 19M-J - Renowned Fife yacht - Comfortable and fast - Complete restoration between 2001 and 2004 - Ex Peter Livanos and Albert Obrist - Exceptional race history - No reserve

This Fife yacht is the last representative of the 19 M J1 class. Despite its grand age, it appears ready to sail on to the end of a second century, having benefitted from an exemplary restoration.

The destinies of Mariquita and Mariska were inextricably linked. These two extraordinary vessels, reunited in this sale, would not have come into existence were it not for the will of one remarkable man : Arthur K. Stothert. An industrialist from Glasgow, he was one of the finest sailors in his day. He competed in 427 regattas during his career, winning 123 victories and 93 podium finishes.

In 1910, hearing that a new class of yachts had just been established, the " 19M J1 ", Stothert knew straight away he had to be involved, predicting that this would attract the yachting world elite. The facts proved him right, to a greater extent than even he would realise. The class became the forerunner for the future J class, set up in the 1930s for the giant yachts competing to retain (or win back) the legendary America's Cup.

And so our man immediately sold his 15M JI ordered three years earlier. And, being a loyal Scotsman, he went once more to see his neighbour William Fife III. He had at least two good reasons to trust Fife. Firstly, he had won practically everything aboard Mariska (see further on) during the previous three seasons. Secondly and just as importantly, Fife was in the process of finishing, from his own design, the construction of the first 19-metre yacht in history. This was named Corona, having being launched during the year of King George V's coronation.

And so, in planning the construction of Mariquita, he knew the boatbuilder would be able to use what he had learnt from his first experience. Stothert duly set off, full of enthusiasm, to the boatyard in Fairlie, on the banks of the Clyde. He was able to request a sound basis for future victories at the same time as request more individual specifications. In fact he had rather fixed ideas about the interior fittings. The deal was done and the yacht became construction number 595.

The yacht's name means " ladybird " in Spanish. This was in no way an indication of its dimensions: 38.1m in length, with a draft of 3.6 metres and a sail area of nearly 573 metres squared.

From 1911 until 1913 Mariquita joined her playmates Octavia, Norada and Corona. Over three seasons of racing, the crews sailed the seas around Scotland, as well as Cork, Cowes, Dartmouth, Kiel and Le Havre. Victories began to accumulate for Mariquita. However, in 1913, disturbing rumours began to circulate coming from Germany. Octavia was sold. The future of the 19m class was compromised.

Mariquita was sold in 1915. By chance, the buyer, F. Buge, was Norwegian. His country remained neutral during the First World War, and the boat was taken to be kept in a fjord. It was renamed Maud IV and spent five years in calm Scandinavian waters. After the war, it rediscovered the choppy British seas and regained its original name. However, it would be another six years before Mariquita began racing once more. Skippered by its new owners, Sir Liffe and A. Messer, the yacht was entered for various coastal regattas, running in the large handicap class.

With the approach of the Second World War, Mariquita experienced her own descent into hell. The hull ended up in the hands of a river transport company who stripped out the rigging and the 36-ton lead keel. It became a kind of houseboat, stranded in mud at Pin Mill, on the Suffolk Coast. It was there, in this pitiful state that William Collier discovered it in September 1987. After six months of discussion with the owner, it was bought by A. Obrist and Greek shipowner P. Livanos, both serious Ferrari collectors. In 1991 Obrist set up the classic yacht restoration boatyard, Fairlie Restorations, at Port Hamble on the south coast of England, not far from Cowes. The name was taken from the small village in Scotland in honour of their predecessor and inspiration, William Fife. The boatyard is still in operation today, having restored over 20 classic yachts, mainly Fifes ranging in size from 24ft to 95 ft. Mariquita was duly transported to port Hamble. In the wonderful book on the life of Mariquita that includes the full history of the boat, A. Obrist said: " When you ask a small boy to draw a boat, he will instinctively draw a sail boat with a mast. This was what I did. " Further on he adds : " Once the boat arrived at Hamble, it had to sit patiently for ten years before being restored. I waited for this moment impatiently, as this was my favourite boat and I knew it would become the most beautiful vessel on the sea. We restored it to strict original configuration, incorporating modifications where quality, safety and environmental changes were required. These boats are not intended to be put on display in a museum, but to be sailed. " Saved by the two aesthetes, the renaissance began in 2001. Mariquita underwent a top-to-bottom restoration at this boatyard, one of the best in the world. Nothing was too good for this yacht. The restoration took three years, finishing in 2004, with no concern to how many hours were spent on the project. The aim was to get as close to the original design as possible, with attention paid to every detail from the fittings on the deck to the interior decoration. Remembering that the first owner, Arthur K Stothert, had very strict ideas on this subject.

However, before the hull could accommodate the interior fittings, it had to be strong enough to support the keel and mast. Total reconstruction was required using the original techniques. Steel frames, assuring the structural rigidity of the hull, were laid with African mahogany boards, 2.5 cm in depth. All structural fastenings were in nickel aluminium bronze. The deck was laid with teak boards studded onto 80 mm plywood panels, ensuring it was completely sealed.

Once the solidity of the hull was assured, attention turned to the interior. This was painstakingly dismantled, and the trusted hands Fairlie craftsmen duly rebuilt the cabins for owner and guests exactly as they had been. Attention was paid to the fact that Mariquita had originally been designed for competition. The original open deck heads were preserved, revealing the structure of the boat. This was in order to keep the weight as low as possible. A few modern concessions were added. A shower in the owner's bathroom replaced the original sunken bath. The space gained was allocated to the engine room, which was equipped with a Yanmar 315 bhp engine used to carry Mariquita into port, or in the Mediterranean when conditions were calm. As in 1911, the main interior accommodation features an elegant saloon with dining table, desk and sofa. A passageway at the back leads to the principal cabins, with a single cabin to starboard and another to port. The rear twin cabin has its own access to the cockpit. Towards the front of the saloon, a more pragmatic approach has been adopted to allow the accommodation of seven crew members and a private cabin for the captain. The galley has retained its early 20th century style, but efficiently redesigned to be able to feed sixteen to eighteen people, the ideal crew size for this large yacht, during a race.

The boat was ready to take to the water again in 2005. This was the moment that the aforementioned book was published, a copy of which will be made available to any potential buyer. P. Livanos, having taken so much pleasure in the project to resuscitate Mariquita, was not very involved in classic regatta racing, and used the yacht very little. A group of businessmen from London duly got together to buy it, and have now entered Mariquita into the sale at Retromobile.

Mariquita's breathtaking appearance ensured it integrated quickly into the Mediterranean circuit, thanks to the combined effort of William Fife and his talented successors at Fairlie Restoration. This is a yacht that has always been skippered admirably. During the 2010s it benefitted from the expertise of legendary skipper, Jim Thon, who worked ceaselessly to perfect the art of gybing and tacking. He drew on his experience to write a short book and a copy of this guide was given out to every new crew member coming on board.

The recent results for this yacht are impressive: winner of the Monaco Classic Week, the Régates Royales de Cannes and the Voiles de Saint-Tropez. In 2014, it won the Big Boat class in the Panerai Trophy, and there have been numerous other awards. Artcurial is delighted to present this masterpiece of the oceans, a unique vessel with an outstanding history, ready to carry away the lucky buyer of Mariquita.

Mariquita can be viewed by appointment only in Berthon Marina, Lymington, Hampshire, United-Kingdom.

Built at Fairlie by Fife

mariquita fife yacht

The 30 metre, gaff cutter  Moonbeam of Fife III  epitomises beautiful classic yachts at their finest. Launched in 1903,  Moonbeam of Fife  is still going strong on the classic yacht regatta circuit despite being more than a hundred years old. The William Fife-designed yacht is constructed in wood with an oak hull and superstructure, while her interior joinery is well-kept mahogany. The historical yacht  Moonbeam of Fife III  is currently for sale.

Tuiga, 1909

mariquita fife yacht

Built by the renowned William Fife shipyard in Fairlie on the Clyde estuary in Scotland,  Tuiga  was commissioned by the Duke of Medinaceli, a close friend of the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, and has had 10 owners in 106 years. HSH Prince Albert II decided to buy her in 1995.  Tuiga  has been participating in classic yacht regattas ever since and is now the flagship of the Yacht Club de Monaco, crewed by YCM members.

Mariette, 1915

Built by Herreshoff

mariquita fife yacht

The classic 42 metre twin-masted schooner _Mariette of 1915 _was built by Herreshoff in the United States 100 years ago. Age has not withered her, but  Mariette of 1915  has undergone a few refits in the Pendennis yard at Falmouth in recent years: in 2010 and again in 2012 in preparation for the Pendennis Cup, in which she took first prize in the St Petroc Traditional Class as well as being crowned overall winner. In 2014 she returned to Falmouth once more for minor works.

Creole, 1927

Built by Camper & Nicholson

mariquita fife yacht

Now owned by the Gucci family, this beautiful wooden schooner has had a colourful history. Commissioned by wealthy American Alan Cochran and launched in 1927,   Creole  has had a number of different owners and also been called  Vira.  When she was known as  Magic Circle , she was transformed into a minesweeper during the Second World War, having previously competed in a number of regattas and attended previous America’s Cup events. In the 1970s she was used by the Danish government for sailing training in the rehabilitation of drug addicts before being bought by the Gucci family in 1983.

Endeavour, 1934

mariquita fife yacht

Arguably the world’s most famous J Class,   Endeavour  was the British challenger in the 1934 America’s Cup, but was beaten by the Harold Vanderbilt-owned  Rainbow .  Endeavour  was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith, who was keen to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. With his experience designing aircraft, Sopwith applied aviation technology to  Endeavour ’s rig and winches and spared nothing to make her the finest vessel of her day.

She swept through the British racing fleet and into the hearts of yachtsmen around the world, winning many races in her first season. Though she did not win the America’s Cup she came closer to doing so than any other challenger.

Since 1934, she has often led a perilous existence, even being sold to a scrap merchant in 1947 only to be saved by another buyer hours before her demolition was due to begin. In 1984, American yachtswoman Elizabeth Meyer bought  Endeavour  and she was transformed and rebuilt by Royal Huisman.  Endeavour  sailed again on June 22, 1989, for the first time in 52 years. J Class yacht   Endeavour  is now for sale.

Elena, 1910

Built by Herreshof

mariquita fife yacht

In 1910, Morton Plant commissioned 55 metre   Elena  to be designed by American naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff, the so-called “Wizard of Bristol”, who made his name designing sailing yachts for America’s elite. Plant’s brief was to the point: he wanted a schooner “that can win”.

Herreshoff gave  Elena  a slightly deeper keel than preceding designs of that time, lowering her centre of ballast, which improved her windward ability.  Elena  won most of her early races against the cream of the American schooner fleet and in 1928 came her crowning glory, victory in the Transatlantic Race. In 2009, she was rebuilt using the original plans for the first  Elena.

Black Swan, 1899

mariquita fife yacht

Originally designed by Charles Nicholson and built in 1899 at Camper and Nicholson in Gosport, England,  Black Swan  started life as  Brynhild  with a yawl rig. She won a number of races at the beginning of the 20th century, including the King’s Cup. Over the years, she has undergone several changes and different rig configurations, and at one stage she was renamed  Changrilla . She was rechristened  Black Swan  in the 1960s and, today, after an extensive restoration project at the Beconcini yard in La Spezia, Italy, she is now carrying a gaff-rig, designed by the Faggioni Yacht Design Studio and built by Harry Spencer.

Mariquita, 1911

Built by Fairlie

mariquita fife yacht

Another beautiful classic yacht from Fife,  Mariquita  was launched in 1911. The 38.16 metre sailing yacht was designed and built for the industrialist Arthur Stothert. As part of the 19 metre Big Class racing that re-emerged in 1911, this gaff-rigged cutter is said to have inspired the J Class yachts that came after her.

She raced competitively against her brethren from 1911-1913, but by the 1950s,  Mariquita  was the last in the 19 metre class remaining. She was restored in 1991 and received a further refit in 2004. A star on the classic yacht racing scene,  Mariquita  is now for sale.
