If you're new to radio controlled sailing or sailing general, the "Beginner's Guide" is an education tool that provides an explanation of sailing rules and helpful hints .

rc yacht club

Our Code of Conduct

1.  Learn and sail by the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS)

2. Always call infractions by hailing twice "66 protests 55", "66 protests 55".

3.  Acknowledge protests and perform penalty turn(s) as soon as possible.

4.  Follow the Corinthian Spirit and do penalty turns, even when not protested.

5.  Refrain at all times from making derogatory or demeaning remarks, be friendly and courteous.

6.  Help new or less skilled members with sailing technique, technical problems, or understanding the RRS.

7.  Remember to be a good sportsman at all times, because this is a fun sport.

Top 10 Basic Rules of Sailing

1.  When boats are on opposite tacks, the port tack boat must keep clear of the starboard tack boat.

2.  On the same tack and overlapped, the windward boat must keep clear of the leeward boat.

3.  On the same tack and not overlapped, the boat clear astern must keep clear of the boat clear ahead.

4.  A boat that begins the process of tacking or gybing must keep clear of boats that are not tacking or gybing. If you are tacking you lose your rights until you are settled on a close-hauled course.

5.  When a boat acquires the right-of-way (such as gybing her boom to a starboard tack), this boat must initially give the other boats room to keep clear.  After a brief period of time, the boat can exercise her newly acquired rights.

6.  When a right-of-way boat changes course (even a little bit), this boat must initially give the other boat room to keep clear. You cannot quickly change your course to force another boat into a foul.

7.  If a boat comes from behind you and begins to overtake your boat from the leeward side, and if that boat is within 2 boat lengths off your leeward side as it begins to overlap you, that boat is not allowed to sail above its proper course.  In other words, it is not allowed to push you up into the no-go zone.

8.  When boats are overlapped approaching a turning mark, the outside boat must give the inside boat enough room to round, provided that the overlap was established before the lead boat entered the 4 boat-length zone.  This rule does not apply at a starting mark as boats are approaching the start.  The inside overlap boat does not have rights to room at the starting mark.  This rule does apply at the finishing mark.  A boat that has established inside overlap prior to the 4-boat-length zone must be given room to finish.

9.  You must round all marks in the direction specified by race committee, and you must not touch a mark.  The committee boat is considered a mark.  The penalty for touching a mark is one full penalty turn (360).

10.  Fouls should be exonerated on the course by getting clear of other boats, and doing two full penalty turns (except #9 above which is one full penalty turn). A boat must conduct her penalty turns before reaching the next mark of the course.

Sarasota Model Yacht Club

rc yacht club

Welcome - About Us

rc yacht club

The Sarasota Model Yacht Club got its start in Sarasota in 1996.  Our club sails the American Model Yachting Association-sanctioned one-design Soling One Meter R/C , RC Laser, DF65, DF95 and (during the winter only) IOM model yachts. The club meets six (seven times a week when the IOM sail) times per week for practice and racing. We sail at the  Nathan Benderson Park at  the West Lake on Athletes Drive.   The West Lake is off of Honore at Athletes Drive.

The Soling 1-Meter kit-based model is a pleasure to sail. As a one-design, it is an ideal introduction to model yachting, yet it provides a  competitive boat for the best of veterans as well and is available from  “ Boatyard John ” (our club builder).

The RCLaser is factory-built ready to sail and available at  intensitysails.com

We also sail the Dragon Force (DF) DF65 and the DF95 RC boats.

The DF 65 is one of the fastest growing class of RC sailboats in the U.S. The boat has earned this distinction by being a great one-design sailing boat while being the least expensive ready-to-sail boat on the market. At around $350 for a boat with radio and receiver and about 3 hours of assembly and you're on the water.

The DF95 is the fastest growing class in the USA and is near Ready-to-Sail in a kit form from  Radiosailing.net  or from “Boatyard John”.

All skill levels are welcome, from neophytes to crusty old salts! You will find that our members can be very helpful in getting you involved with this great hobby. Come on out to watch the hard-fought races or join us for practice and racing.

rc yacht club

The Soling One Meter (S1M) :  This S1M the largest class in the U.S. and Florida. We sail Solings Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Race Captains rotate throughout the year. Craig Collemer is the Race Captain.

The RC Laser :  This is the largest RC class in the world. We sail Lasers on Friday. Steve Lippincott is the Race Captain.

The DF65 and the DF95 :  These are the newest and fastest-growing restricted one-design class in both Florida and the U.S.

We sail DF95's on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Bill Hendrickson is the Race Captain. The DF65 fleet sails Monday and Wednesday.  Rob Wucki is the Race Captain.

IOM The IOM Class is considered a Development Class by the AMYA.

The International One Metre class is the fastest-growing class in the world. This class is distinct and different in purpose from the US One Meter class, and complements the International Marblehead Class as a simpler, less expensive boat. The International class has a one-design rig, and has minimum weights on the keel and overall, and restricts the hull material. The net effect of these differences is that the typical cost spiral of lighter weight, and more expensive materials and manufacturing processes, is arrested. This allows amateur designers and builders a chance to design and build with little concern that they are building in a disadvantage due to weight. This is a feature not found in any existing AMYA class and is one of the reasons that the class is so popular around the world.  We sail IOM's on Sundays in season.  John Stryhn " Boatyard" is the Race Captain.

rc yacht club

Where and when do we race?

The club races at Benderson Park on the West Lake.  The West Lake is located at the intersection of Honore and Athletes Drive, Sarasota Fl.

GPS Address: 5700 Athletes Drive, Sarasota FL 34235

Summer Racing Hours (all fleets)

10am to 12pm all days unless otherwise noted.

Fall, Winter and Racing Hours: (all fleets except as noted)

1:00pm to 3:00pm         Monday-Friday and Sunday

10:00am to 12:00pm     Saturdays

10:00am to 12:00pm     Friday Laser Fleet

Summer racing starts June 1.  Check with the RD prior to coming out to race with us.

More About Us

Do we accept beginners.

YES. We encourage sailors of all skill levels to join us. A Mentor Program is available for beginners.

How can I get a S1M, RC Laser DF65 or DF95?

Soling 1M:   We have a member called “Boat Yard” who has used/refurbished S1Ms’ for sale. You can also buy a new ready-to-sail boat from John. John's email [email protected]

RC Laser:   A new RC Laser is available at intensitysails.com  at a cost of less than $600 with 3 complete rigs.

DF95:  A new DF95 can be purchased from Radiosailing.net in kit form for $345, up to $610, which includes a transmitter and receiver, B rig, B sails, LiPo battery, custom stand and sail numbers for A and B sails.  The boat can also be purchased and assembled by club member  “Boatyard” .  The assembly takes 3-4 hours.

DF65:  The Fleet at SMYC is unique in that it caters to those unable to walk long distances while racing due to shorter courses then the other classes. The boat is available at http://radiosailing.net/. The boat can also be purchased and assembled by club member  “Boatyard”

Do we have dues/fees?

Dues are $75/year and a signed liability Waiver for SANCA is required.   SMYC is also a member of the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA).  The AMYA has many resources for Individual members. Their web site is www.theamya.org.

The club's primary contact is Commodore Bill Schmeising,            ( 631) 944-1077 or email [email protected]

International Model Power Boat Association

You're On The Clock!

Serving Model Boaters Since 1949

What is The IMPBA?

The International Model Power Boat Association is a non-profit organization that was started in 1949 by a dedicated group of model boat enthusiasts.  They created the organization to foster model powerboat building and to encourage and assist in the formation of clubs.  We provide a uniform set of rules for racing and records.  Go to an IMPBA event anywhere in the US and Canada, and you can expect racing rules and event rules to be consistent.  We have 14 Districts and an additional District 21 established for everyone outside the US and Canada.

International Model Power Boat Association

Why Should I Join?

RC Boating is a fun and exciting family hobby whether you are racing or simply running your boats with others! The best place to run RC boats is on an IMPBA pond devoted to boating—making your boating time safer and more enjoyable. The IMPBA organization provides General Liability insurance coverage to its members while they are participating on a covered pond. Join a club, or just join IMPBA, and you’ll meet a great group of people who have the same passion for building and running boats!

International Model Power Boat Association

Our Mission

International Model Power Boat Association, Inc. shall be a non-profit organization whose purpose is the fostering of Model Power Boat Building, the advancement of Model Power Boat Racing, and the coordination of member clubs, to the end that there shall be uniform rules and classes of boats.

Its members shall encourage and assist in the formation of clubs and similar associations, provide recognition of Records established within the rules of the IMPBA, and foster safety, fellowship and sportsmanship in the ranks of model boaters.

Rose City Model Sailing Club

About the Rose City Model Sailing Club

rc yacht club

HELLO PACIFIC NORTHWEST MODEL SAILORS

Founded in 2010 and serving the Pacific Northwest and the Portland Metro area, the Rose City Model Sailing Club was chartered in 2011 by the American Model Yachting Association ( AMYA ) as Club 311. As a relatively new club, we’re anxious to increase our membership, and invite you to join us for build nights or weekend sails : we always have model boats available for trial sails!

Currently the RCMSC supports three fleets of AMYA sanctioned radio controlled model sailboats: the T37 : a classic 37″ wooden model racing yacht manufactured in the Seattle area with a large following in the Pacific Northwest; the 25.8″ DRAGON FORCE 65 , a new class of r/c model racing yachts introduced in 2013 in the U.S., UK and Europe, and the DragonFlight 95 Class, racing at a staggered start with the T37s. Occasionally, a few of our members still sail older class model sailboats supported by the RCMSC, the 12″ FOOTY –a developmental class of r/c model yachts with an international following and the German designed 21″ MICRO MAGIC racing model yacht (sailed worldwide). During a fun sail, many other classes will make an appearance as well, including Canterbury J ‘s, Soling 50’s, Marblehead’s, 10R’s, Fairwind’s, Racing Sparrow’s, RC Laser’s, Star 45’s, IOM’s & US1M’s – who know what you might see on the water.

Because our membership includes both working and retired folks,  our Sailing Schedule emphasizes weekend sails; but casual, impromptu  weekday sails are not unusual. We share our building and sailing skills on build nights and at the pond, and more experienced members are happy to mentor those new to r/c model yacht sailing. More information and additional club photos are available at Rose City Model Sailing Club (RCMSC) on Facebook.

SAILING WITH THE RCMSC

Our primary sailing venues, Westmoreland Casting Pond and Tualatin Commons Pond, are in the Portland area but we hope to add venues as we expand membership (see our VENUES Page for locations). Our SAILING SCHEDULE emphasizes weekend sails and has been planned to complement the racing schedule of our good neighbor the Oregon Model Yacht Club (OMYC).

Check our NEWS POSTS for announcements of RCMSC race results, non-scheduled sails or special events.

RCMSC Officers

To promote the RCMSC to r/c model sailboat skippers in the Pacific Northwest, our club members occasionally visit other model sailing clubs, community centers, and special outdoor events with model yachts and flyers in hand. Detailed announcements of these events will be posted on this page and on our NEWS POSTS .

If you or your model yacht club or organization is interested in a visit from the RCMSC, or sailing with the RCMSC please contact us .

JOIN US: MEMBERSHIP

Membership in the RCMSC is available for an annual fee of $20.00, due in January. An application form is provided below. Contact the Club Secretary/Treasurer for more information. While not required for membership in the RCMSC, we encourage our members to also join the American Model Yachting Association ( AMYA ), a particularly valuable resource for new r/c model sailors.

Feb. Points – DF95 & IOM

More Water, But less wind….

The Draining/Scraping/Refilling of the Pond left us precariously low on water and forced the use of a 4-Heat HMS scenario for the IOM Region 8 Championships held February 16th – 18th (limiting fleet sizes to 11 boats). Fortunately, the Pond has mostly regained its ‘normal’ water level and only a small reef remained near the fill pipe for our February 24th Points Races.

Seventeen DF95’s took to the water in light, variable winds with RD Ben Reeve calling the line, taking down names, arbitrating disputes and narrowly avoiding protests.

rc yacht club

Next it was Deja vu all over again as Eleven IOM’s started in moderate westerly winds. Racing was tight and clean as five skippers shared the 1st Place finishes between them.

IOM R-8 Championships: Day 1 Standings

Day 1 showed us plenty of Wind…. not so much Water. Due to low levels and limited liquid real estate, HMS with 4 Heats was utilized for the first day to reduce congestion on the Pond. The result was excellent, clean, protest-free racing. Current Standings below.

Feb. 2- ODOM & SOLING 50 Points

Cool February weather held out for ODOM & Soling 50 skippers today. The wind was a little on the light side. No snow or ice- so we have no complaints from this department! Thank you Chris Staiger for directing a fun day of sailing.

ODOM skippers are thanking Jess Atkinson for his day of pond side tuning assistance. He helped most of our fleet improve their boat settings, with his years of ODOM experience.. You could see the results on the water! Thank you Jess!

Jan. 13 Points- IOM & DF95

You sure couldn’t argue about the beautiful winter day on Mission Bay! IOM and DF95 skippers participated in their first Points Series for 2024 with good numbers in each fleet. The sea breeze was just enough for each class to glide through the afternoon on a nice long course. I bit light and shifty at times.. but that’s our pond!

Chris Staiger set the marks and manned the clock for the IOM fleet. Ben Reeve directed today’s healthy DF95 fleet. These guys are volunteers and they deserve much credit for your fun today!

Jan. 6 Sail Points-Soling 50 & ODOM

There were many glassy holes on our pond for the first races of the 2024 season. That said, each fleet managed 6 races just in time for happy hour! (happy is getting home before dark). VC Sail, Chris Staiger handled the workload, setting marks, RD’ing both fleets and even some entertainment with a broken oar trick. Chris even demonstrated his Venetian gondola poling technique while standing in the skiff. (not coast guard approved). All good fun!

rc yacht club

Our ODOM fleet is growing and it’s fun to see skippers from other classes take the helm of that classy little pond yacht. The ODOM fleet welcomed Steve Ross, Pat Nevitt, Tom Warren and Dennis Rogers to the roster. It should be a fun year with these added skippers on the line.

Pat Nevitt is once again our score keeper for 2024.. Thank You Pat for volunteering!

January 19th is the SDA AWARDS BANQUET. January 12 is the deadline to pay . Don’t miss the boat!

Paradise Radio Yacht Club Inc Emerald Lakes

We sail International One Meters, International Ten Rater, International RC Laser, Dragon Force 65 and Dragon Flite 95 class yachts. Prospective members are asked to contact the relevant yacht class Fleet Captain before purchasing a yacht and before applying to join the club.

aerial update July 2017

The club was formed in 2007 by a group of IOM sailors looking for a venue that offered fair sailing breezes and allowed all sailors the opportunity to compete fairly. After spending some months looking at a large number of different Gold Coast venues, Emerald Lakes was chosen.

Emerald Lakes is centrally located in the Gold Coast region. The estuarine lake is fed brackish water from the Nerang River and is therefore, free from freshwater ‘weed’. The sailing area has a north/south aspect and the adjacent large open parklands provide mostly uninterrupted air flow.

Annual Club Invitation Events:

Our Club was originally established in 2007 specifically for the RACING of radio controlled IOM yachts which is the largest Class in the World, being raced in over 30 countries.

We have since altered our Constitution to provide for racing other classes, but the IOM remains our Principal Class with racing on Saturday afternoons [ 12.30-4pm or 12 races] and Thursday "TOP’s" [Thursday On the Pond] providing a more relaxed and social environment [12.30– 3.00 PM]. The IOM Saturday fleet regularly enjoys 10-20 starters including ex big boat sailors with World, Sydney-Hobart and National representative honours in their personal histories.

Our IOM fleet has also produced representatives to numerous World, European and NZ Championship events.

If you are looking for competitive RC yacht racing, this is the class for you.

PRYC International One Meter Fleet Captain: Bill Clancy Phone (07) 5598 1531

Skippers considering the purchase of a second-hand IOM yacht should ensure it has a valid measurement certificate.

Every Thursday, IOM skippers take to the water with a friendly competitive attitude for handicap racing. Generally, we have between 4 and 10 boats go through the start line. Racing rules are still enforced; however, the general attitude is a little more relaxed than on Saturdays. Sailing starts at 11.00 AM each Thursday and finishes around 3.00 PM. We generally have a break for lunch after 3 or 4 races and complete 12 races by the end of the afternoon.

All comers are welcome. Because generally someone will lend you their boat to try out, Thursday on the pond is a great opportunity before you take the next step of purchasing a yacht. Competitors from all Clubs are always made to feel welcome, so come and try the most competitive radio sport available.

The RC Lasers were introduced to the club in mid 2012 and there is now an active fleet of about a dozen boats. Lasers sail on Wednesdays with the first race starting at 11.00 am and the last at 3.00 pm. The rapid increase in the fleet is undoubtedly because of its strict one-design which makes all boats uniform. A Laser comes in a distinct blue carry bag ready-assembled so no boat building skills are needed. With a new boat out of the bag, just add a radio and receiver and start sailing. The design is simple and exceedingly robust allowing Lasers to easily survive encounters with other boats and rocky shorelines. The relatively heavy keel and standard A, B, C and D rigs allow sailing in all winds up to 40 knots. With no mast stays and a single main sheet, rigs can be changed in under half a minute... more here

  • Dragon Force 65 is a strict one design class which means that DF65 racing will never be an arms race where money rules.  . .. more here

Thereafter social sailing takes place on demand, followed by informal refreshments, on demand.

The up to 14 strong fleet of PRYC members are often joined by visitors from other clubs and by prospective sailors, with the accent always being on a fair, fun - filled but competitive day... more here
