Who is the Red Man in The Forest? Explained

With Sons of The Forest on the horizon, set to release February 23rd, 2023 as a sequel to The Forest. This survival horror game that takes place on a seemingly deserted island, away from all forms of “normal” civilisation. As the goal, similarly to Minecraft, is to build shelter, find resources and food for survival, you quickly find out that you are not alone on the Island. In fact, horrible abominations roam the Island, protecting their territory. These humanoid creatures appear in all forms, all hostile towards the Island newbie. But who is the Red Man of The Forest? What does he have to do with the story and how will this affect Sons of The Forest? Let us dive in.

The Forest Story Explained

The Forest begins on a pleasant flight with a father and son. However as turbulence kicks in, the flight takes a turn for the worst. The plane crashes, resulting in no survivors but yourself and your son. However, the next thing we see is our son being taken by a man covered in red, what we believe to be paint (we hope). The game, although is a survival game at heart, its main objective is to find our son Timmy who was taken. All we cross paths with the Island abominations, we learn that these are in fact creatures created as a result from horrendous experimentation. Experiments with children as the primary patients.

Not only do these roam the land but a tribe of cannibals gladly welcome the new arrival of the protagonist with open arms and knives in their hands. It is revealed that missionaries had attempted to bring their beliefs to the tribes in hope of conversion and “rehabilitation for their sins”. With otherworldly and religious structures such as the underground obelisk. It is revealed that these events took place only a decade ago, with the cannibals coming out on top. Fast forward to now where Sahara purchased the land, building an underground lab. Are they aware of the horrors that roam the land above?

Explaining the Red Man

Plot twist, they are. As they are conducting more evil procedures than that of the cannibals. Taking children to “heal” them from terminal illnesses when in reality, they use the obelisk’s power to transform and mutate their bodies into something inhuman. The obelisk holds the ability to resurrect beings but at a price of a sacrifice. This leads us back to Red Man who is trying to sacrifice Timmy for his daughter Megan who is killed by the creation of the Red Man. His identity is revealed as Dr. Mathew Cross who leads the experimentation on children. Because karma exists, it results in his daughter being killed by one of his mutant creation, thus bringing forth his motivation to resurrect Megan through using Timmy.

Spoilers for the Ending

After a successful sacrifice, Megan is resurrected but takes revenge on her father who is killed (with crayons ). As seen with all of his experimentation, the obelisk is no different when it comes to resurrection. Turning Megan from an innocent child into a multiple long limbed mutation. The story concludes with the choice, become the Red Man yourself to save Timmy by using the power of a large obelisk to bring down another plane. The same obelisk that was used by Dr. Cross to take your plane down. Or end the cycle of resurrection and mutations.

That is our explanation of the presence of the Red Man in The Forest. His story has come to an end but will sights of him appear in Sons of The Forest? As a point of trauma for now grown up Timmy? We are likely to see some forms of hallucinations or appearances crafted from the obelisk itself. The Red Paint is a special item that can be worn by the player, similar to mud. It was added as a decoration in update v0.45 , though made a use-able in update v0.49 in The Forest .

Gameplay [ ]

Currently, red paint is contained in open paint buckets, and can be found in several locations on the Peninsula . It is often accompanied by a paintbrush . Once picked up, the player will automatically wear it. The cannibals , upon witnessing the player wearing the red paint , can act in a passive manner (though they can still become hostile upon attack). Their interactions with the player consists of: following and staring at him; stepping back if the player tries to approach them; some will even kneel and pray at him as if was some sort of sacred being, or other divine entity that has significant value to the cannibal people. Red paint can have an effect on all cannibals in the area, causing them all to kneel. However, if the player starts attacking, the cannibals will become hostile again. Additionally, kneeling cannibals will rise up after a short while if not killed, and either become hostile again or go back to kneeling. Pales will just stay kneeling sometimes. Creepy Mutants are unaffected.

While red paint will only spawn in 8 locations, and can only be applied once per game session, the buckets will replenish whenever the player quits and reloads the game.

Note: The red paint will be removed with rain or if the player starts to swim in any water source.

Background [ ]

It is theorized that the Sahara company, in their research lab , used fear-conditioning with their patients, who later became the cannibals. This can be evidenced by a number of things.

• The entry hallway to Sahara is bright red all the way through, with red walls and floors.
• The secure doors that the player cannot enter, throughout the facility, are bright red.
• The red paint induces a passive, non-hostile state in the cannibals, who will sit and kneel, or at the very least, back away.
• Dr. Cross knows to use Red Paint to induce the passive state in the cannibals.
• Red paint can be located all over the island, notably in three different large cannibal camps.

Because of all of this, it can be deduced that Sahara fear-conditioned red into the cannibals, making them associate the color with pain or death or something else unpleasant, or perhaps something pleasant such as rewards for kneeling instantly. This was done to better control the cannibals, as they grew into larger and larger numbers due to the increasing extensiveness of Sahara's tests. Dr. Cross uses the red paint because he used to work at the lab and knew this. The buckets around the peninsula were put there either by him for easy access at all times, or perhaps by Sahara employees a while ago so they could safely traverse the peninsula.

Alternatively, the cannibals found around the island were most likely aware of the artifact and its powers before Sahara Labs purchased the island. Given that Dr. Cross was able to harness the power of the artifact and create mutants/other life forms the cannibals respect Dr. Cross and the color red because they are aware to some extent of his capabilities. This would explain why they kneel before him, they see him as a God capable of wielding the power of the artifact and as someone that runs the Lab that now surrounds the artifact. The mutants do not have this association to Dr. Cross or the artifact and attack the player regardless if he is covered in Red Paint or not, because they do not carry the religious association that the island natives had.

• After the plane crash, Dr. Cross can be seen wearing the same red paint (the red man ), though his does not wear off, as evidence shows him being red still while on the yacht surrounded by water.
