Why Lil Yachty Made an Alternative Rock Album

Lil Yachty is among a bevy of artists who have tried their hand at making a rock album. Jay-Z, Machine Gun Kelly, and Lil Wayne are just a few rhymers who went from rap to rock in their music careers.

On Friday (Jan. 27), Lil Yachty released Let's Start Here. , his first alternative rock album. The 14-song collection features Yachty rapping over psychedelic rock productions that included blaring guitars and out-of-this-world sounds.

Lil Yachty 's attempt at alternative rock shouldn't be a total surprise. In October of 2021, Tame Impala shared Yachty's remix of their song "Breathe Deeper." He also appeared in the group's neon-flashing music video for the song. Apparently, while working on the Tame Impala remix, Yachty was inspired to make his alternative rock album.

But Yachty always had an appreciation for rock music. In a August 2016 interview with Nardwuar, he was presented with a gift: a vinyl copy of Coldplay's 2014 album Ghost Stories , much to his delight. "I can sing every song on this bitch from head to toe. This is my favorite album from them," he said.

When Nardwuar asked Lil Boat  in 2016 if he would like to work with the U.K. band, he said "so bad" before singing portions of Coldplay's song "Always in My Head."

Lil Yachty also hinted that he was recording a rock alternative album in January of 2022. While purchasing some expensive bling at the Ice Box jewelry store in Atlanta, the rapper-producer talked about his experimental project.

"My new album...it's a non-rap album, it's alternative. It's sick," he said. "I've always wanted to [do an alternative album] but now I have met all these amazing musicians and producers."

"It's like a psychedelic alternative project that's cool, it's different," he continued. "It's different. It's all live instrumentation."

"I've changed my dynamic, you know what I'm sayin'?" he added. "Like, I'm telling you, this album...I'm creating music a whole lot differently."

Leading up to the release of the  Let's Start Here. album was a little difficult. The project, initially titled Sonic Ranch , leaked online in December of 2022. One track, "The Black Seminole," features live guitars, spacey keyboards and Yachty rapping in an echoic voice. "Sex symbol, the Black Seminole/A sex symbol, the Black Seminole/African Rambo with more ammo/Can't be escaped, I'm on every channel," he delivers.

So Why Did Lil Yachty Make an Alternative Rock Album?

Much like Jay-Z and Lil Wayne, it's all about creative freedom. In an October 2009 interview with Billboard , Weezy described his rock project, Rebirth , as his "freedom album."

"When I said I was doing a rock album, it was about doing a freedom thing. This album isn't hip-hop," the Young Money leader explained to the publication. "When I do my Carter albums, I know I've got to rap, I know I've got to spit...I also know the things I shouldn't say, the things I shouldn't talk about. There's none of those limits on this album [ Rebirth ]. I say what I want, how I want. That's what this album is: a freedom album."

Lil Yachty loves to express himself and doesn't limit his artistry when it comes to creativity. Earlier this month, the "Poland" rapper announced that he wanted to form an all-female backing band. Yachty held several tryouts in different cities, including Atlanta.

On Jan. 12, Yachty wrote in a since-deleted tweet on Twitter: "Putting together a band of women, please pull up to tryouts Thursday."

The 25-year-old rhymer also shared four pictures of text of his requirements for the group. Apparently, Yachty is looking for two to three background singers, a drummer, a keyboard player, a guitar player and a bass player for his all-women band. The location of the auditions was in Lithonia, Ga.

There's no word if Lil Yachty has assembled his all-women band yet, but it will be interesting to see what he has developed with his backing musicians.

As for his experimental rock album, Let's Start Here. ,  fans are already praising  Lil Yachty 's new direction.

Lil Yachty Delivers New Psychedelic Rock Album ‘Let’s Start Here.’

Mail

Lil Yachty’s new album, Let’s Start Here, continues to further the star’s reputation as an innovative savant. The new album is 15 tracks in length, delivering a new experience for fans.

lil yachty alternative album

Let’s Start Here was crafted in areas ranging from El Paso to Brooklyn, with Lil Yachty immersing himself in day and night sessions. The result is a Psychedelic Alternative album executive produced by SADPONY. The album is influenced by Pink Floyd’s classic Dark Side of the Moon and experiential psychedelic journeys.

Ahead of the album, Yachty released a skit titled “Department of Mental Tranquility.” In the skit, Yachty strolled a hallway entering what would be the first step into the rest of his life. Playing multiple roles, Yachty was introduced to his upcoming float experience in a sweltering room until it overcomes his body, and he is directed to room 10. What you hear is the result of that trip, double entendre, don’t even ask me how.

Lil Yachty Stuns Fans With Brand New Rock Album 'Let's Start Here'

By Tony M. Centeno

January 27, 2023

Lil Yachty

Lil Yachty has been teasing his new album for some time, but fans weren't ready for the psychedelic vibes he had in store. On Friday, January 27, the Quality Control rapper stunned the industry with his brand new album Let's Start Here. With help from a live band, Lil Boat puts rap to the side as he offers a fresh alternative rock vibe throughout the project. He self-produced 12 out of the 14 songs with contributions from executive producer SADPONY, Patrick Wimberly, Jake Portrait and plenty other beatmakers. The experimental LP has been in the works for over a year. Last January, he explained that he's always wanted to make an alternative rock album.

"My new album...it's a non-rap album, it's alternative. It's sick," he told Ice Box jewelers in Atlanta . "I've always wanted to [do an alternative album] but now I have met all these amazing musicians and producers." "It's like a psychedelic alternative project that's cool, it's different," he add. "It's different. It's all live instrumentation. I've changed my dynamic, you know what I'm sayin'? Like, I'm telling you, this album...I'm creating music a whole lot differently." Yachty embraces his love for Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon , which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year , and completely switches up his flow as he croons over live guitars and drums. Prior to the album's release, Yachty hosted an exclusive listening party in New Jersey. Initially he advertised "fine dining" on a flyer that went out earlier this week, but was actually just an assortment of snacks and drinks. Among the theater full of attendees were his friends Drake and Offset , who sat next to him in their reserved section.

Let's Start Here. serves as the follow-up to his viral hit "Poland" and his 2021 album Michigan Boy Boat . The latter features Tee Grizzley , Icewear Vezzo , Babyface Ray , Sada Baby , BabyTron and more. Listen to Lil Yachty's new album below.

Let's Start Here Lil Yachty

Lil Yachty has revealed the artwork and release date for his forthcoming album, “Let’s Start Here,” set to debut Jan. 27 on Quality Control Music and Motown Records.

Ever the provocateur, the rapper’s new cover art previews an AI-generated image of what seems to be seven executives sitting next to each other in suits. With malformed faces akin to a psychedelic trip down the rabbit hole, the artwork seems unremarkable upon first glance. However, the longer you stare at their faces, they look inhuman, with contorted facial features and warped smiles.

Slowly shedding major label support, Yachty now has his own label and creative consultant company, Concrete Records and Concrete Family, respectively. The rapper made the comments while picking up new custom pieces at the Atlanta-based jewellery store Icebox, which released a clip from his visit.

“My new album is a non-rap album,” he said in footage captured at the store. Yachty added that it was the first time he’d publicly addressed the project: “It’s alternative, it’s sick.”

When asked who or what inspired him to go in a different musical direction, he answered: “I’ve always wanted to [make an alternative album] but now I’ve met all these amazing musicians and producers” [quotes transcribed by Complex ].

He continued: “It’s like a psychedelic alternative project. It’s different. It’s all live instrumentation…I’ve changed my dynamic…I’m creating music a whole lot differently.”

Yachty commissioned the jewellery makers to produce his new Concrete Boys and Working Man pieces, the latter of which is from his Concrete Boys company logo.

“It’s the first time I’m actually speaking on it. It’s a non-rap album,” Lil Boat said. “It’s alternative. Last week, the “Minnesota” rapper put a call out for an all-women band in now-deleted Instagram and Twitter posts. It is unclear whether the tryouts, originally set for Jan. 12 in Lithonia, GA, actually took place and whether the band was meant to contribute to Let’s Start Here or accompany him on tour.

Lil Yachty is riding a wave of momentum after receiving high praise for his contributions to Drake and 21 Savage’s November 2022 collaborative project Her Loss . He had production credits on “BackOutsideBoyz,” “Privileged Rappers,” “Pu**y & Millions,” and “ Jumbotron Sh*t Poppin ,” the last of which the Toronto rapper shared a music video for this week.

Lil Yachty and James Blake to Release ‘Bad Cameo’ This Month

By Kory Grow

The time has finally come for Lil Yachty ‘s fans to ask themselves, “What the fuck? When they do this?” At least that’s what the rapper predicted his fans would think in February when he first started teasing his new collaborative album, Bad Cameo , with James Blake . Now, Yachty and Blake have set June 28 as the release date for the album, though they haven’t yet released a track list or single.

The duo recently discussed the collaboration with Complex , with Yachty revealing that he DM’d Blake in 2020 about how much he loved Blake’s Assume Form but never heard back since Blake wasn’t checking Instagram at the moment. Fortuitously, though, the admiration was mutual. “I’ve been a fan of Yachty for years,” Blake said. “And when I heard his last record [ Let’s Start Here ], I was like, this is really a turn. Not many artists are brave enough to do something that’s kind of opposite of the last thing they did.” A mutual friend eventually introduced them.

“I can tell why you chose that beat because it just feels wistful and sort of, I don’t know, endless,” Blake told Yachty in the Complex interview. “It just keeps going round and creates this perfect bed for you to just tell the story or say how you feel about her.”

In February, Yachty spoke about how unusual the project is for both artists in an Instagram video . “I think James has worked with a quite substantial amount of hip-hop artists, but this project is just like … It’s so left … for both of us,” he said.

Lil Yachty’s celebrated, genre-obliterating new album Let’s Start Here debuted at No.1 on three separate charts: Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums, and Top Alternative Albums.

At the album release show, Yachty explained his philosophy behind the album, stating, “This album is so special and dear to me. I think I created it because I wanted to be taken seriously as an artist. You know? Not just some SoundCloud rapper. Not some mumble rapper. Not some guy that just made one hit. I wanted to be taken seriously because music is everything to me, and I respect all walks of music. Not just rap and hip-hop but everything. I wanted to make something that showed the world that shows it, just how great music is to me.”

For many months of 2021-2022 the acclaimed musician poured himself into a full band experience in the studio day and night with stints ranging from El Paso to Brooklyn. A deep, introspective and expansive alt-psych album, Let’s Start Here . came to life with executive production by SADPONY. His longtime love of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and multiple psychedelic journeys influenced this ambitious and intimate album.

The surreal video descends into chaos as characters complain of the temperature before Yachty descends down a blinding white hallway and enters an even brighter room.

On January 17, Yachty first announced the album, revealing the title and cover art. It’s set to arrive via Motown Records/Quality Control Music. Back in October, Yachty shared a new song called “Poland” on SoundCloud, which quickly went viral. In response to the demand, Yachty shared an official version of the track on all streaming services. Rappers like Denzel Curry, Wiz Khalifa, and more were among the many to offer their thoughts on the F1lthy-produced track and its now-signature chorus, “I took the Wock to Poland.”

Lil Yachty Claims His Next Album Will Be A ‘Psychedelic Alternative Project’ Instead Of Rap

Aaron Williams

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Lil Yachty is branching out musically — he’s been doing it his whole career. Despite being a really solid straight-up rapper, he made his first big splash musically with the Lil Boat mixtape, which found him singing over cloudy beats as much as spitting bruising battle raps, although he’d already proved he could do that , too. More recently, his Michigan Boy Boat mixtape saw him try on a new regional style that lent itself to his rapid-fire delivery alongside some of Michigan’s hottest up-and-comers.

But his next album might be his biggest swing yet. During an interview at Atlanta jewelry story Icebox, Yachty said his new album would depart from rap entirely. “My new album is a non-rap album,” he said. ““It’s alternative, it’s sick! I’ve always wanted to [do one] but now I’ve met all these amazing musicians and producers. It’s like a psychedelic-alternative project. It’s different and it’s all live instrumentation. I’ve changed my entire dynamic. I’m telling you, with this album and on, I’m creating music a whole lot differently.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Our Generation Music (@ourgenerationmusic)

Among those producers is Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, with whom Yachty remixed “ Breathe Deeper ” last year, and his most recent solo single was the soft-rock-inspired “ Love Music ” — perhaps offering a glimpse of what he has in store on this mysterious new album.

The Best New Hip-Hop This Week

Let’s Start Here.

The first song on Lil Yachty’s Let’s Start Here. is nearly seven minutes long and features breathy singing from Yachty, a freewheeling guitar solo and a mostly instrumental second half that calls to mind TV depictions of astral projecting. “the BLACK seminole.” is an extremely fulfilling listen, but is this the same guy who just a few months earlier delivered the beautifully off-kilter and instantly viral “Poland”? Better yet, is this the guy who not long before that embedded himself with Detroit hip-hop culture to the point of a soft rebrand as Michigan Boy Boat? Sure is. It’s just that, as he puts it on “the BLACK seminole.”, he’s got “No time to joke around/The kid is now a man/And the silence is filled with remarkable sounds.” We could call the silence he’s referring to the years since his last studio album, 2020’s Lil Boat 3, but he’s only been slightly less visible than we’re used to, having released the aforementioned Michigan Boy Boat mixtape while also lending his discerning production ear to Drake and 21 Savage’s ground-shaking album Her Loss. Collaboration, though, is the name of the game across Let’s Start Here., an album deeply indebted to some as yet undisclosed psych-rock influences, with repeated production contributions from one-time blog-rock darlings Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson and Patrick Wimberly, as well as multiple appearances from Diana Gordon, a Queens, New York-hailing singer who made a noise during the earliest parts of her career as Wynter Gordon. Also present are R&B singer Fousheé and Beaumont, Texas, rap weirdo Teezo Touchdown, though rapping is infrequent. In fact, none of what Yachty presents here—which includes dalliances with Parliament-indebted acid funk (“running out of time”), ’80s synthwave (“sAy sOMETHINg,” “paint THE sky”), disco (“drive ME crazy!”), symphonic prog rock (“REACH THE SUNSHINE.”) and a heady monologue called “:(failure(:”—is in any way reflective of any of Yachty’s previous output. Which begs the question, where did all of this come from? You needn’t worry about that, says Yachty on the “the ride-”, singing sternly: “Don’t ask no questions on the ride.”

Lil Yachty's Label Concrete Boyz set to release their first collaboration project 'It's Us Volume 1' this April

A ccording to NFR Podcast, Lil Yachty's record label, Concrete Boys (also known as Concrete Boyz), is set to release their first collaboration project titled It's Us: Volume 1 on all streaming platforms this April.

NFR's official X account posted on March 25, confirming the release date of the Concrete Boyz project as April 5, 2024. The post also revealed the featured artists, including Lil Yachty, Karrahbooo, Draft Day, DC2Trill, and Camo. The tweet read:

"LIL YACHTY, KARRAHBOOO, DRAFT DAY, DC2TRILL, CAMO!"

The tracklist for the upcoming album is yet to be confirmed, but based on the artists involved in this project, it's likely to showcase a fusion of alternative rock, R&B, and rap.

Lil Yachty and Concrete Boys Discography

Yachty (Lil Boat), who is currently signed to Quality Control, incorporated his own Record Label Concrete Boyz, a few years ago in an attempt to bring upcoming artists in his genre to the spotlight.

Over the years, Yachty and his team have been slowly recruiting rappers and artists from across the music industry, from 31 Camo to Karahbooo, all of whose music appears to have been inspired by Boat's discography.

Lil Yachty has also collaborated with his signees on some of his previous work. Below are two songs officially released alongside Artist Draft Day:

  • Demon Time (Feat. Draft Day)
  • POPOVICH Freestyle (Feat. Draft Day)

On May 29, 2020, Yachty released his fourth studio album, titled Lil Boat 3 , across all DSPs (Digital Streaming Platforms) via Quality Control Music and Motown Records. The 19-track project included a track titled Concrete Boys .

This track acted as the official introduction to the "Concrete Crew" he was building with his record label. The song includes a shout-out to the Concrete Boys in the chorus when Yachty implies that when his "back is against the wall," he can always rely on his crew to come through for him.

Another notable bar from Lil Yachty's song has been listed below:

"I just woke up, dreamin' 'bout the rose (Oh my God) / They had ni**as 'round me who don't stand on toes (Hell nah) / Barely ever do I think about my foes / How much longer will I live? Only God knows."

On December 16, 2023, a song titled Mo Jams was released on the official YouTube channel for Concrete Boys, alongside a music video that featured most of the CB roster, except for 31 Camo. Mo Jams was produced by Rawbone and acts as the first official collaboration between the members of Concrete Boys.

This track, although not being released on DSPs, has garnered significant attention for an upcoming collaboration project by racking up almost 4 million views on YouTube.

As fans await a Concrete Boys collaboration album, Lil Yachty continues to impress fans by following up on his widely acclaimed 2023 project Let's Start Here, which found the rapper delving into a more experimental sound with his music.

Notably, Yachty has been releasing a string of singles, which include his collaboration with Fred Again.. on stayinit. The rapper was also featured on Lyrical Lemonade's debut studio album, All Is Yellow , which dropped two months ago in January 2024.

Lil Yachty Gets 'Vulnerable' & 'Deep' On Joint Album With James Blake

Lil Yachty Gets 'Vulnerable' & 'Deep' On Joint Album With James Blake

Lil Yachty and James Blake will be dropping a joint album later this month, and the music may be the “deepest Yachty’s gone.”

Ahead of the LP’s June 28 release, the pair sat down with Complex to talk all things music and of course, the project – which is titled Bad Cameo .

According to the description, the record is “trippy, ethereal and deep, maybe the deepest Yachty’s gone.”

“We got a really vulnerable side of Yachty in some of those sessions,” Blake added.

While they’ve yet to release a tracklist and didn’t speak too much on what to expect from the album, Yachty did discuss a song where he details his love for his daughter – which Blake called “so beautiful.”

“When you vocalize something, it makes things feel a lot more real,” Yachty said. “So for me I think it was writing those words down, saying them, it just made me feel the way. It was just like, damn.”

Blake added: “I can tell why you chose that beat because it just feels wistful and sort of, I don’t know, endless. It just keeps going round and creates this perfect bed for you to just tell the story or say how you feel about her.”

The album will follow a slew of music Lil Yachty recently dropped exclusively on SoundCloud .

During a late night rollout on a SoundCloud page named ‘Concrete Leak System,’ the Atlanta hitmaker released 14 new cuts — a highlight of the package is the 21 Savage-assisted “Part of the Plan,” as well as a collab with Vory.

Lil Boat later confirmed these are part of an official release (as opposed to a leak) in a post on X (formerly Twitter.)

June 5, 2024

It’s been a busy and productive year for Lil Yachty. Earlier this year, the RIAA certified the rapper and singer’s 2016 debut Lil Boat and its 2018 sequel Lil Boat 2 gold.

This accolade by the trade organization honors 500,000 album sales or equivalent units, which both packages have surpassed separately since their releases via Quality Control and Motown Records.

The original  Lil Boat put the Atlanta artist on the map. Its follow-up two years later debuted at No. 2 on the US Billboard chart, marking him as a full-fledged star.

James Blake Teases Lil Yachty's Vulnerable Side On New Collab Album

Lil Yachty Performs In Milan

James Blake and Lil Yachty are about as different as two artists can be on the surface. One broke through making glitchy, sad boy electronica, while the other burst onto the scene making happy and colorful pop-rap. The notion that they would collaborate on a single song, much less an entire album, would have been baffling a decade ago. Yet, that's exactly what Blake and Yachty are gearing up for. These eclectic artists are going to be dropping the album Bad Cameo , and have been hyping it up in interviews.

Blake talked about the sound and overall aesthetic of the album during a recent Complex feature. The artist is going for a vulnerable feel, which tracks for anyone who's heard a second of a James Blake song, but he noted how shockingly different it will be for Lil Yachty. "We got a really vulnerable side of Yachty in some of those sessions," he explained. Blake told the outlet that he'd been a fan of Lil Boat for years, but he didn't feel as though their styles were complimentary until the rapper dropped his latest album, Let's Start Here . In Blake's estimation, that was a pivotal turning point.

James Blake Praised Lil Yachty's Experimentation

James Blake claimed he was completely blindsided by the album. “When I heard his last record, I was like, this is really a turn," he recalled. "Not many artists are brave enough to do something that’s kind of opposite of the last thing they did." The rest of the Complex piece took the form of a conversation with Blake and Yachty. Once more, however, the electronic artist pointed out Yachty's propensity for happy music. Lil Yachty cited Paul McCartney and Wings' "Let 'Em In" as one of the first songs he remembers singing as a child, and Blake was quick to draw parallels to Yachty's own music.

"This, to be honest, explains a lot just from your musical sensibilities," Blake told the rapper. "[It's] happy music. I noticed that that runs through your music." He then explained the ways in which his and Yachty's styles blended on Bad Cameo . "I mean, on this record you were talking about so many different things. There's pain, there's happiness, there's everything in between. But that vibe is so sunny and it's kind of what your disposition is in your music." Sounds like a fascinating blend.
