Five Top Crossover Watersports Boats

It is the rare person among us who wants to do one thing and only one thing all the time. Even the professionals who excel at wakesurfing, wakeboarding or water-skiing still enjoy trying their hand at other disciplines. The problem? Each type of boat needs different attributes to help tow-sports enthusiasts enjoy their day on the water. But what if there was one type of boat that could work well for all three? Enter the crossover boat, a style of inboard-powered boat equally capable of flattening the wake for a slalom run, ramping it up for a boarding launch point, or sculpting it for a surf session. Here are five crossover boats to consider. Is one of them right for you? Read on.

Malibu 20 VTX

Malibu designed the 20 VTX to be a boat that can do it all, calling it the “crossover king.” The key to accomplishing this lies in its hull design, which Malibu calls its Diamond Hull. Specially shaped, it helps generate respectable wakeboard and wakesurf waves, yet still allows for slalom skiing. It is able to offset the displacement needed to generate wakes and waves at slower speeds, with hard reversed chines and lifting strakes to help generate lift at the higher speeds required for water-skiing. In our sea trial of this boat, we noted that without ballast, the boat produced a soft, readily crossable wake at tournament slalom speeds.

Hardcore skiers will want to option for the center-mounted ski pylon and TXi Performance Tower, the mounting geometry of which allows a slalom towline to swing across the cockpit. With the center-mounted ski pylon, the boat will track straight and true while a skier carves through a course.

Time to wakeboard? Deploy Malibu’s Power Wedge III—a hydrofoil that adds a response equal to 1,500 pounds of ballast—and watch the wake grow. The standard ballast system fills to 765 pounds, but you can option the ballast capacity up to 3,575 pounds.

When the crew is ready to surf, engage Malibu’s Surf Gate—vertically mounted trim tabs that help shape waves—to sculpt the waves to the rider’s preference behind the boat. The waves are clean and long, and can be ridden as long as there’s enough fuel to power Malibu’s proprietary M5Di or M6Di engines.

Nautique Super Air GS20

Many recognized world records in water-skiing have been set behind Ski Nautique models, and the builder’s G Series boats produce excellent wakes for boarding and surfing. For the rider who wants to do it all, even on the same day, Nautique offers the Super Air GS20. In its hull design, the builder features the Nautique Configurable Running Surface (NCRS), which includes an adjustable plate that automatically moves according to user settings in the in-dash Linc Panoray control system. Sensors in the NCRS help it electronically adjust to the ride conditions, similar to auto trim tabs found on many recreational boats.

With that, whoever is driving the Super Air GS20 can flatten the wake for a slalom run behind the boat and use the Linc system to set the boat for pinpoint direction and speed control. Nautique offers a pop-up ski pylon as an option to set the towrope at the lower angle preferred by skiers. (It also serves as a safer towpoint for tubing; we do not recommend using a tower to tow tubers because the angle makes the tube more prone to flying into the air and flipping.)

When you’re ready to surf or board, adjust the NCRS plate in the Linc settings and fill up the 1,850 pounds of internal ballast. While the wake and wave are smaller than those made by pro-level Nautique wakeboats, the GS20 produces a clean, quality wake for boarding or a wave for surfing. Nautique powers its boats with PCM Marine engines, and the Super Air GS20 can be rigged with a 355 hp ZZ5, 400 hp ZR4 or 450 hp ZZ6.

• Surf pipe on the transom sends exhaust into the propeller stream and away from the surfer.

• Pop-up ski-pylon option brings the rope’s tow point down, providing better control for skiers and even for tubing.

• Ballast capacity is 1,850 pounds.

• Linc Panoray system includes Ski Assist feature.

Tigé‘s 20RZX is heavier and beamier than the typical 20-foot crossover, so it is naturally up to the task of producing big wakes. Because of its dimensions, Tigé is able to build in a 46-gallon fuel capacity and create comfortable seating for up to 13 people. That means plenty of spotters for every session.

The first thing to consider is the 20 RZX’s patented Convex hull, a cathedral-style hull that curves upward at the transom and can produce a slalom-ready wake with no ballast and at tournament skiing speeds—around 34 to 36 mph. When it’s time to wakeboard, the driver can press a button on the in-dash Clear touchscreen to fill up the 3,000 pounds of ballast in a matter of minutes. Use the 11-inch screen to control Tigé‘s TAPS 3 System.

For surfers, the TAPS 3 system is a combination of three extended trim tabs on the transom that can operate independently from one another. These tabs help control three aspects of the boat to optimize the wave to the rider’s liking: pitch, list and yaw. For example, by working the tabs to either side, Tigé drivers can help the boat list to 7 degrees to port or starboard to help shape the wave, rather than adjusting the ballast to either side.

Tigé powers the boat with Raptor engines from Indmar, paired with a V-drive. The power options range from the smaller Raptor 440 up to the Raptor 575, a 6.2L V-8 inboard.

• Wider beam and deep freeboard allow for increased fuel capacity and storage space.

• Internal ballast system allows for 3,000 pounds of ballast that can be filled in minutes.

• TAPS 3 system allows the driver to adjust the boat’s pitch, list and yaw to optimize the surf wave.

• Alpha 2 tower is a great design for handling all watersports.

MasterCraft XT21

MasterCraft’s XT21 is the longest of the boats we’ve reviewed, although its 8-foot- 2-inch beam and traditional V monohull make it look sleeker than some of the others. With that, it has a large 51-gallon fuel capacity and is capable of holding 14 passengers.

Powered by a 6.0L Ilmor engine made exclusively for MasterCraft, the XT21 tracks true in slalom runs, with a minimal wake when at higher speeds with no ballast. When a wake is needed, MasterCraft equips its boats with its Gen2 Surf System, which is customized for each level of boat in its lineup.

For the XT21, the Gen2 Surf System has an integrated ballast system that provides 2,640 pounds of ballast, with 900-pound tanks placed near the transom to both port and starboard, and a 600-pound tank built under the console’s walk-through to the bow seating. The system also incorporates tabs, which MasterCraft calls shaping devices, to help sculpt and shape the wake or wave to each rider’s preference. All of these aspects can be controlled at the push of a button with the in-dash Murphy touchscreen system.

MasterCraft boats are highly customizable in terms of creature comforts, colors and options. One of the coolest options is the Dockstar Handling System, an innovative flanking rudder system that takes away the pain traditionally associated with handling single-engine inboard boats. Opt for it to make maneuvering in tight spots and around the dock or launch ramp a no-sweat situation.

Supra’s SR is also a heavier, beamier boat, with a larger 45-gallon fuel capacity and the ability to seat a crew of 14. Supra bills it as its crossover model, suited for both water-ski and wake-sports duties.

Key to the SR, and any Supra boat, is the AutoWake system. AutoWake is a proprietary autopilot system that goes beyond any other—it utilizes onboard sensors to control the boat’s pitch and roll to optimize the shape of wakes and waves. Updated for 2020, AutoWake now includes an auto-leveling feature that utilizes the surf tabs at the transom to keep the boat level, no matter where passengers are seated during surfing, skiing or just cruising around the lake.

The Swell 3.0 Surf system is another engineering feat. This technology deploys inclinometers to measure the boat’s movements, and adjusts the ballast and Supra Launch settings to get the boat aligned with the boat’s pitch and roll to optimize each rider’s preset wake or wave. The system includes vertical stainless-steel blades to each side of the transom, and the aforementioned center tab deployed on the transom just beyond the prop flow.

AutoWake and Swell 3.0 Surf can be controlled at the dash with the Vision touchscreen control system. The driver will find it easy to use in order to focus on giving the skier, surfer or boarder the ride of his or her life.

The Supra SR is powered by either a 400 or 450 Raptor by Indmar 6.2L V-8 engine that will propel the boat to speeds in the high 30s for skiing or cruising, and can also produce the slow-speed torque necessary for surfing.

Water Sports Activities

You will probably like to engage in a variety of water sports activities on your yacht charter vacation..

Most charter yachts have a nice selection of “toys” available for their guests, mostly at no extra cost.  Exceptions to this might be fuel for motor driven “toys” and SCUBA diving that usually has an extra cost attached to it and charged on a per-dive basis.  Here’s a list of typical water sports items and activities that are or sometimes can be made available.

Activities & Equipment

• Noodles, floating mats and other take it nice and easy type toys. Most yachts carry these as a matter of course.
• Knee-boards, wake boards and other towable toys: great for kids, many charter yachts have these in inventory. They can be towed by the dinghy. Kayaking : many yachts have one or more one person or two person kayaks on board, it’s great fun to take your kayak around the different anchorages and explore a bit of the coastline as well.

• Water Skis : Many charter yachts offer water-skis, it’s important to look at the yacht’s dinghy outboard engine horsepower though. This information is available on the yacht specification sheet. Anything under 40 hp is suspect.

• Wind-surfing : wind surfing boards are harder to find as standard equipment on charter yachts but some do actually have them in inventory, you MAY need a few classes to become proficient in this. There is also that much more difficult variety of wind-surfing which is called Kite boarding ; not many yachts carry these, but we know of a couple.
• Personal Watercraft or PWC’s :  these include wave-runners, Seadoos, and Jet-skis.  Many charter destinations have restrictions on their use due to the many accidents and disturbance to the eco-systems that they cause.  Some of the larger motor yachts have these on board but you need to check with us or the captain to determine if there are places along your itinerary where they are allowed.
• The ubiquitous ship’s Dinghy or RIB : an absolute must for getting ashore when you’re at anchor or on a mooring. Also really neat for running errands and picking up supplies and just going ashore to explore. The bigger the yacht usually, the larger the dinghy and the more horsepower it has.
• Underwater propulsion devices : that can tow you underwater while snorkeling;  there is a wide variety of these available on the market but, since they are quite expensive, only the larger motor yachts tend to carry these in inventory.
• Center Console Runabout or Fishing boat with 100 to 200hp outboard, generally in the 25′ to 30′ foot range. Not commonly in inventory on most yachts although some of the larger motor yachts carry or tow one of these around for guests’ use. Check with us or see the yachts specification sheet.

It’s important to understand that NOT ALL yachts will carry all these water toys.  Some yachts have a limited inventory and others have invested heavily in this area. The water sports activities that ARE available on each yacht are generally listed on each boat’s specification sheet in the boat’s brochure. If you have a “must-have” situation, or if you like a yacht but it doesn’t have the toys you really wanted, we’ll be glad to help out since there are many destinations that have water-toy rental businesses and we can help you to find that special item or activity for you or your kids.

Mission Bay Aquatic Center is one of the world's largest instructional waterfront facilities located in beautiful San Diego, California. Last year over 30,000 participants experienced surfing, sailing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing, stand up paddling, waterskiing, kayaking, and windsurfing. Tens of thousands of people have learned to safely enjoy watersports at MBAC over the past 45 years.

Mission Bay Aquatic Center is owned and operated by Associated Students of San Diego State University and UCSD Recreation and is open to the public. The aquatic center is home to The Watersports Camp , a youth day camp for kids ages 6-17 sponsored by the YMCA of San Diego County .

MBAC is recognized as a model for safe watersports education and operations and is the regional boating safety center for the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways . As a LEED Platinum Certified Facility the center is commited to fostering a culture of sustainability and protecting the marine environment.

Four Seasons Unveils First Yacht Itineraries and Suite Interiors

Four Seasons loyalists have a lot to be excited about, with the launch of the brand’s first yacht nearing in 2026.

The 14-deck luxury vessel, which is partly being modeled off of Aristotle Onassis’ iconic yacht Christina O , will offer some of the most opulent amenities at sea. Initial renderings released in October 2023 show a 66-foot saltwater pool, a marina deck built for swimming and watersports, sophisticated dining concepts, and 95 guest suites. Now, the Four Seasons has released the first renderings showcasing the spacious suites on board—and we got a first look.

The ship's sleek design seeks to translate “the Four Seasons guest experience in terms of comfort level and the luxury standards" to life at sea, Fredrik Johannson, partner and executive director of Tillberg Design of Sweden and the lead designer on the Four Seasons Yacht, tells Condé Nast Traveler. Even the hotel group’s beloved mattresses will be offered in every room.

The first renderings of the Four Season Yacht's suites were released Tuesday, showcasing spacious guest rooms with ocean views.

Also just revealed: the first destinations the yacht will call upon throughout its inaugural year. Passengers can expect to visit a wide variety of exclusive and jet-setting locales, as the yacht is slated to visit more than 130 destinations across 30 countries in its first year alone. And of course, guests will have the option to book pre-and-post cruise extensions at iconic Four Seasons resorts along the way.

“We’re incredibly proud to announce the first itineraries aboard Four Seasons Yachts, and know that these experiences will exceed our guest expectations when we set sail in 2026,” says Alejandro Reynal, Four Seasons President and CEO.

Each voyage calls upon small ports that are typically considered “yacht playgrounds," Thatcher Brown, the Chief Commercial Officer at Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings LTD and co-owner of Four Seasons Yachts, tells Traveler. Passengers can expect to sail between Caribbean and Mediterranean coastal havens almost exclusively visited by private vessels .

When the yacht launches in January 2026, it will first head to the Caribbean, where it will complete seven-night, island-hopping itineraries between St. Barths, Nevis, the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curaçao, and Aruba.

Then in March 2026, the ship will cross the Atlantic and begin sailing its Grand Mediterranean voyages , which include visits to alluring towns in Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey. Travelers can also expect to access “under-the-radar” Greek islands , like Ios and Milos, as well as more popular Grecian destinations like Athens and Santorini, according to a Four Seasons release.

Guests will have the option to adjoin suites to accommodate families or other groups traveling together.

Sure the destinations sound glamorous—but it might be difficult for passengers to depart the ship and leave behind the luxe accommodations on board. Specifically the guest suites—which will offer 50% more living space per guest than any other competitor currently at sea, according to the company’s release.

Each space will offer floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the sea, bathrooms with double vanities, and large closets. “Almost every single bed on this whole yacht is facing the sea,” Johannson says. “All the rooms there have this clarity to them. They are very exclusive, but they have a beautiful simplicity.”

Every suite will also offer private outdoor terraces. What’s more: guests will have the option to adjoin suites to accommodate families or other groups traveling together. There are more than 100 different adjoining configurations, including the option to reserve the entire side of a deck—an opportunity that would afford a group of travel companions more than 13,000 square feet of living space.

The Four Seasons Yacht will be divided between Funnel and Loft Suites, each with private outdoor terraces.

But the true showstopper on board is sure to be the Funnel Suite. Located on the very top deck where the funnel or smokestack would traditionally be, the Funnel Suite is essentially the ship’s penthouse, spanning four floors and 9,975 square feet. The massive space will feature three bedrooms and a terrace with outdoor dining space, splash pool, and outdoor showers. But the suite’s best amenity will be its views. The four-story, floor-to-ceiling windows have been fitted with the largest piece of contiguous curved glass at sea, offering sweeping 280-degree views of the ocean as the yacht sails from port to port.

Voyages on board the Four Seasons yacht haven’t yet opened for general booking, but interested travelers can join the yacht’s waitlist in hopes of securing one of the elegant suites on the 2026 itineraries.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapses after being hit by cargo ship

The landmark Francis Scott Key Bridge in the US city of Baltimore has collapsed after it was hit by a ship.

Several vehicles were crossing the bridge, which is more than 2.6km (1.6 miles) long, when the container ship collided with one of its supports.

At least seven people are believed to be in the water and a number of vehicles were detected beneath the surface, officials said.

Boats and helicopters are part of the search and rescue effort.

The Singapore-flagged container ship, Dali, struck a support column on the 47-year-old bridge at 01:30 local time (05:30 GMT), causing it to collapse.

It had departed from the terminal at Port Breeze at around 00:45 bound for the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

A US federal government agency said the vessel "lost propulsion" as it was leaving the port.

The crew then warned Maryland transport officials of a possible collision, according to an unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report on the incident.

A number of vehicles, including "one the size of a tractor-trailer" plunged into the water below, officials said.

A major rescue operation is being led by Baltimore fire department, the US Coastguard and other agencies from the state of Maryland.

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace confirmed that two people were rescued and one of them had been "transported to a local trauma centre... in a very serious condition".

Mr Wallace said the tide was posing a challenge to rescue efforts. Local officials said another huge concern for rescue teams was the freezing conditions, with air temperatures of about 3C (37.4F) near the bridge.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott described the incident as an "unthinkable a tragedy", adding the focus right now should be on "the people, the lives, the souls… there are people in the water that we have to get out and that's the only thing we should be talking about."

Shipping company Synergy Marine Group told the BBC the ship had an all-Indian crew with 22 people on board.

It said in a statement that all crew members - including two harbour pilots - had been accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

"The exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined" and the ship owner was "fully co-operating" with federal agencies, the statement added.

Shipping giant Maersk said it had chartered the vessel and was carrying its customers' cargo.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected", it said in a statement. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard the vessel.

The White House said it was "closely monitoring" the situation and senior administration officials were in touch with the governor of Maryland and mayor of Baltimore to offer any federal assistance they needed, adding there was "no indication of any nefarious intent" behind the crash.

No team in NBA history has more wins than the Boston Celtics. No franchise has more championships than the Celtics, who are tied with the Los Angeles Lakers with 17 apiece. They built the dynasty of NBA dynasties with eight consecutive championship seasons spanning parts of the 1950s and 1960s; no other team has a streak even half that long.

They are synonymous with greatness.

Now consider this: This season’s Celtics are on pace to do something the franchise hasn’t done before. Even after blowing a 30-point lead and losing in Atlanta on Monday night, this team could finish the season as the most dominant, in terms of average victory margin, in Boston history.

The Celtics are outscoring opponents by 11.5 points per game, on pace to be the fifth-largest margin by any team in NBA history and more than a point better than any other Boston squad has ever managed. Think about that: Bill Russell wasn’t on a Celtics team that won games by this many points night-in and night-out, nor was Larry Bird, nor was John Havlicek, nor was Bob Cousy, nor was Kevin Garnett … and on and on and on.

“We’re not looking past anybody,” Celtics forward Jayson Tatum said a few weeks back. “We respect every opponent, regardless of national TV game, League Pass, their best player’s out … we approach every game the same way and we’re not looking past anybody.”

Thing is, they can, at least for the next few weeks.

The Celtics have wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Every other seed in the playoffs — on both sides of the league — remains still up for grabs, and only a complete sputtering down the stretch will cost Boston the No. 1 overall seed and home-court advantage for the entirety of the playoffs. Wasting a 30-point lead on Monday stings, sure, but it also happened in a game where the Celtics were without primary ballhandlers Jrue Holiday and Derrick White. It’s not a sign of trouble. It’s not a sign of anything. It just happened.

Odds are, they’ll come back and win when they play the Hawks again on Thursday, probably by a comfortable margin. The Celtics lead the NBA with 36 wins by double digits; that’s basically double the average of every other team in the league, and no other club entered Monday with more than 30 such wins.

Their longest losing streak of the season: two games. It’s happened twice, one of those in early November, the other earlier this month. Their record after losses is 12-2. They’ve had separate winning streaks of 11, nine, six, six, five and five games.

“We don’t talk about it much,” Tatum said. “We really just try to get better every single day. Sounds cliche and sounds boring, but maybe last year we rushed or looked past opponents and were just ready to get to the playoffs. But this year, we’ve really taken it one day at a time. Try to get better every day that we have practice or we have film sessions and look at every game as an opportunity to grow and get better as a team.”

Clinching the No. 1 seed was not cause of celebration for Boston. One, it’s been obvious for weeks that the Celtics would be atop this year’s East bracket and two, it wasn’t their goal. There’s only one goal for the Celtics and that’s to win it all, get banner No. 18, break the tie with the Lakers and move past some memories like losing a Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals at home to Miami last year, watching Golden State celebrate a championship in Boston in 2022 or losing another East finals to Miami in the bubble in 2020.

Every other team in NBA history that finished a season with a scoring differential of at least 11.5 points per game won a championship: the 1971-72 Lakers (12.3-point differential per game), the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks (12.3), the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls (12.2) and the 2016-17 Warriors (11.6).

They were dominant champions. These Celtics have a chance to join their ranks.

Rowing club boats capsize off Connecticut, all 19 people who plunged into the water are safe

WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) — Rowing club boats capsized during a fast change in weather off Connecticut on Wednesday, sending 18 teenagers and one adult coach into the cold waters of Long Island Sound, police and fire officials said. Two people were brought to a hospital with suspected hypothermia.

First responders said they came upon a chaotic scene off the coast of Westport shortly after 5 p.m., as some of the people in the water were swimming to shore and others were trying to get into other boats. Police and firefighters from Westport and nearby towns responded, as did the Coast Guard.

Two sculling boats with the private Saugatuck Rowing Club capsized as the water became rough during a weather change, sending 18 people into waters off Compo Beach, Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas said at an evening news conference. The people in the water tried to get on a third, larger boat, causing it to sink and sending one more person into the water, police said.

First responders used boats to rescue many of the people, while others were able to swim ashore.

“This was a very serious incident with an incredibly good outcome,” Koskinas said.

The teens, all male, ranged in age from 14 to 18. Everyone was out of the water and safe within about 50 minutes, Koskinas said. The water temperature in Long Island Sound was about 44 degrees, he said.

The teens were put on a school bus to get warm and were picked up by their parents, he said.

Authorities said they were investigating why the boats capsized, with the goal of preventing similar incidents.

South Korea has 'grave concerns' over China using water cannons against Philippine ships

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's foreign ministry on Tuesday expressed "grave concerns" over China's recent use of water cannons against Philippine ships, saying it stokes tension in the South China Sea and undermines a maritime order.

The Philippines accused China's coastguard of using water cannons on Saturday against a civilian boat supplying troops at the Spratly Islands, a largely uninhabited archipelago in the South China Sea which has long been a source of territorial spats between the two countries.

It was the latest in a series of flare-ups in the past year.

The Philippines lodged a protest and said the boat was damaged and some crew injured, while Beijing warned Manila to behave cautiously and seek dialogue, saying their ties were at a "crossroads".

"We are gravely concerned about the recent and repeated use of water cannons in the South China Sea," Seoul's foreign ministry spokesperson, Lim Soo-suk, told a briefing.

"These actions increase tensions in the South China Sea, a major international navigation route used by all countries including Korea, and undermine efforts to maintain peace, stability, security and a rules-based maritime order."

He also said the freedom of navigation and overflight must be respected by all countries based on international law.

South Korea's Yoon Suk Yeol administration has been vocal about tension in the South China Sea and also the Taiwan Strait, saying it opposes attempts to change the status quo by force.
