Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta 2023 Overall
24 Apr. final race of the 2023 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was held with the sun beating down on a slight swell of deep blue Caribbean sea. The trade winds, which typically blow out of the east, swung to the southwest at around 10 knots.
“With the unusual wind conditions, the Cannon course was adjusted to allow the boats to sail most of the course on a reach” said Race Coordinator, Clare Cupples.
“It was a joy being out on the sea today, such a comfortable ride” said Roz Preston, owner of the Bill Dixon designed 44-foot spirit of tradition sloop Sweet Dreams.
There was tight racing in several classes. In the schooner class Richard West’s 1928, 50-foot staysail schooner, Charm III and Nat Benjamin’s 65-foot, gaff-rigged schooner, Juno were tied for first overall in the class with one race left. But in today’s race Charm III sailed over the starting line too early so Juno won the race and secured first in the class for the Regatta. This then meant that Andy Hurst-Smith’s 56-foot Cherubini schooner Principles slid into second in her class.
In Modern Division A, two Antiguan-based boats, Sandy Mair’s First 35, Cricket and Bernie Evan-Wong’s modified Cal 40, Huey Too started the day with Cricket holding a one point lead. Cricket was not able to hold onto the lead as Huey Too took first in race three with Cricket coming third. “I’ve never beaten Huey Too in a regatta ever, we had our chance today but messed up the start and could never recover” said a dapper Sandy Mair, still wearing his tie and hat from the parade back at the dock after the race.
Other class winners included Matt Barker’s 1930, 65-foot cutter The Blue Peter in the Vintage and Classic division. Sarah Schelbert’s 35-foot Gurney sloop, Alani in Classic GRP B, Paul Deeth’s 50-foot ketch, Petrana in Classic GRP A, Alexis Andrew’s 42-foot Alwyn Enoe Carriacou sloop, Genesis in the Traditional class, Robbie Ferron’s Nonsuch 33, Bunglebird in Modern Division B and Don Ward’s 47-foot sloop, Freya in the Spirit of Tradition class. See here for the full results.
The Parade of Classics which returned to English Harbour this afternoon was a treat for all the spectators at the Dockyard. Dressed boats and crews were applauded vigorously and the boats responded loudly with their horns and guns. Katina won a barrel of rum for the best dressed boat and crew in traditional formal attire and Charm III won the most spirited yacht in the parade.
Open Mic night has been growing in popularity over the years and last night’s performance was one of the best with crews from various yachts jamming together, an amazing display of talent. The sea shanty “What shall we do with the drunken sailor” was greeted with particular enthusiasm.
“The regatta was fun filled” Deon Hector owner of the Antiguan-based, 35-foot Niagara sloop DC Camp. “The weather was a little challenging but we rose above it. There wasn’t as much wind as we would have liked but the crew adjusted beautifully and it was wonderful. We’ll be back again next year.” Alani’s owner Sarah Schelbert from Grenada added, “It was great being in Nelson’s Dockyard, a beautiful place with so many beautiful boats.”

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta 2023

The Antigua Yacht Club has great pleasure in announcing that, as from next year, the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta will be run by a new team headed by Paul Deeth. The vision is to restore the Regatta to founder Kenny Coombs’ original concept of “like-minded people getting together to share their passion in racing stunning yachts in superb sailing conditions”.
The first move by this group has been to change the Event’s dates back to the traditional period before Antigua Sailing Week. Thus the 2023 Regatta will take place on 19th to 24th April, to include the Single-Handed Race, the Concours d’Elegance, three days of racing, the Parade of Sail into English Harbour, the Gig Racing and the Cream Teas. It will be mainly located at Nelson’s Dockyard, with plenty of opportunities to “swing the lamp” over a rum punch (or more) in that historic venue.
For further information or if anyone is interested in joining our new Classics Group as a volunteer, please contact [email protected]

Founder Kenny Coombs’ underlying premise for the original Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was to create a group of people who shared the same passion for racing vintage and classic yachts in the ideal sailing conditions of Antigua, with its amazing and unique historic background.
The resulting camaraderie between this group, which varied from year to year as different yachts and sailors took part, became legendary, and was one of the chief reasons for the Regatta’s success. Whether you arrived in flip-flops or on a private jet, it was a great leveller.
The new Classics Team aims to restore the original spirit of the Event, which will now take place 19-24 April 2023 during the traditional period prior to Sailing Week. Most events, including registration and dockage, will be in Nelson’s Dockyard. These will include the Single-Handed Race and the Concours d’Elégance, followed by three days of glorious racing, culminating in the famous Parade of the Classics in English Harbour after the last race on the Sunday followed by Prize Giving 6-8pm. Monday will be for rest, relaxation – and fun, with the restoration of Gig Racing at the Admiral’s Inn and thirst being slaked by Cream Teas served by elegant ladies in flowery hats & frocks (stronger beverages will also be available at the bar). A new, slimline version of our famous Programme is also being prepared
The classes of participating yachts will remain the same – Vintage, Classic, Spirit of Tradition, Traditional and Tall Ships – but the former Historic Class has been renamed Modern Classics, defined as monohulls built of any material, with a modern underwater profile such as fin and skeg, and designed over 35 years ago. NB There will no longer be a Dragons Class in this Regatta.
And last but by no means least – after all the whole point of a regatta is to race – the courses, yet to be determined in detail, will be based on the original ones, such as Old Road and the Butterfly, and a modified Kenny Memorial Cannon, with an emphasis on reaching, with some Windward /Leeward legs for the Spirit of Tradition and Modern Classics classes
Despite the late change in dates, we hope to attract participants who share the values of the new Classics Team and would like to join in re-creating the original spirit of this illustrious Regatta. Several boats have already expressed interest in participating including the elegant Adix, the biggest sailing yacht in the world.
We therefore invite any boat interested in taking part in 2023 to email our Regatta Organiser Robin Stout at [email protected] (NB [email protected] is no longer in use).
Similarly, anyone wishing to volunteer their services (the Regatta is largely run on their good will!) should also contact the Regatta Organiser at the same address, together with anyone wanting further information.
Press & Media – photographers and journalists etc, are invited to contact [email protected] too (NB press@antiguaclassics is also no longer in use).
We are looking forward to welcoming you all next year to the 34th annual Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in Nelson’s Dockyard for some wonderful racing and plenty of celebrations, fuelled by local beer and the typical tipple of the Caribbean: rum!
