Okean 50 is a Brazilian Beauty

With about 4,600 miles of coastline and one of the largest populations of any country in the world, Brazil has been recognized as a potentially hot yacht market for American and European builders since the early aughts, when Goldman Sachs unleashed its BRIC thesis upon the world. Hype has since cooled around the concept — BRIC theory posited that by 2050, Brazil, Russia, India and China would be the world’s dominant economic powers — but interest in the Brazilian boating market has not. Enter Okean Yachts and its new 50, a Brazilian-built cruiser poised to put its builder on the map. The Okean 50 is being treated as a trawler by some because of its dual-mode hull (more on that later), yet thanks to Italian yacht designer Paolo Ferragni, the yacht’s exterior is unlike most any trawler you’ve seen. The outer appearance includes 3-foot-1-inch-high windows that ring the yacht’s salon, making it appear as if she’s wearing Oakley Razor Blade sunglasses — a look made twice as strong by glazing with a reflective tint. I couldn’t help but think of Rickey Henderson patrolling the outfield with his staple look when I saw her on the docks in West Palm Beach, Florida, on test day.

But the boat doesn’t just make an impression with her looks. Her layout, particularly on the main deck, was a hit when she debuted stateside at the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, and it’s plain to see why. Those windows allow as close to fully unobstructed salon views as I can recall seeing aboard a yacht, plus two hydraulic, foldout bulwarks lower to port and starboard. This act of oceangoing origami increases the Okean’s beam from 14 feet 7 inches to 20 feet 7 inches, making her an excellent party platform.

The paneled salon door aft folds to starboard, and another door to starboard slides open for access to the fold-down terrace. The windows in the aft galley to port also open, all of which creates a feeling of spaciousness and airiness that may very well set the bar for vessels in this class. My test boat is likely to garner lots of stares this summer when she plies the waters off Montauk, New York, her future home, and I’d guess that the yacht’s style and entertainment-friendly features will make her popular in South Florida, Miami in particular.

Although the 50 has a day-boat feel when she is fully open, she is still a motoryacht. She has a full-beam, amidships en suite master stateroom with an athwartships queen-size berth and headroom of 6 feet 3 inches. A vanity to port is beset with stowage areas, including a 4-foot-long-by-1-foot-wide-by-1-foot-7-inch-deep space tucked behind it that can handle larger items like extra sheets or paper towels. The master’s head has patterned-marble inlays in the shower, as does the day-head, which has a private entrance to the forepeak VIP. That VIP feels large for a boat this size, with 6 feet 11 inches of headroom. A third stateroom to port can have bunk beds or side-by-side twins (the only option for customization available on the accommodations level). Though my test boat had a washer and dryer in its lazarette, future versions will come standard with laundry equipment in this guest space, for easier access.

The amount of stowage on the accommodations level as well as the general roominess of the staterooms hint that this boat is designed for longer journeys. Indeed, Okean’s calling card (along with the foldout terraces) is its dual-mode hull. With twin 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600s, the 50 can top out at 25 knots with the hammer down and cruise at around 20 knots as her engines burn 33 gph. This results in a range of 230 nautical miles with a 10 percent reserve. However, when you throttle her down to 1,000 rpm, she can cruise at 6 knots while sipping just 1.6 gph and achieve a range of 1,425 nautical miles, making her an excellent candidate for the Great Loop or some island hopping.

Besides offering flexibility when it comes to performance, the hull has an exceptionally soft ride. My blustery test day saw swells of up to 8 feet in Lake Worth Inlet, and the boat handled the turbulence well, climbing steadily up the faces of the waves before nuzzling gently into their troughs, again and again and again.

The Okean 50’s performance in the slop, coupled with her layout and variable cruising speeds, should make her stand out from the crowd. She has enough Brazilian flair to carve out her own niche in an American yachting market that’s always looking for something just a little bit different.

Brazilian Boats and Yachts Enjoy Tailwinds with Tax Incentives and Lower Costs

A model that costs up to $700,000 is displayed for the first time in nautical events in the USA; four Brazilian shipyards reveal their bets for 2023.

Bloomberg Línea — Brazilian manufacturers of luxury boats are increasingly targeting the North American market. Dedicated fairs showcasing new models of speedboats, which can cost up to $700,000 (R$3.7 million), are part of the strategies to boost foreign sales of Brazilian boat builders.

The advantages of Brazilian boats come from tax incentives and lower production costs. This year, for instance, nautical fairs in Florida cities such as Miami, Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale have received boats produced in Brazil.

This is the case of Triton Yachts, a manufacturer based in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná, which debuted at the Miami International Boat Show, considered the largest nautical event in the world, in February. Three Triton models were displayed, such as the recently launched Triton Flyer 38 T-TOP, valued at $310,000, as well as Triton 300 Sport and Triton 370HT models.

Another Brazilian boatbuilder, Fishing Raptor, took the Fishing 390 Solarium to the Palm Beach International Boat Show, a nautical fair closing on March 26. With almost 12 meters in length and capacity to receive up to 16 passengers, the vessel has a price tag of $700,000.

Armatti Yachts, a boatyard from the souther Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, has bet on the export of supersport motorboat models ranging from 30 to 52 feet. In October, the brand delivered the first model of the new Armatti 420 Sport Fly in Miami. The 42-foot boat is valued at more than half a million dollars.

Engineer and entrepreneur Fernando Assinato, Fishing Raptor’s CEO, says the boatyard has already sold more than 20 units of the new Fishing 390 Solarium speedboat in Brazil and abroad. According to him, the North American market is interested in these models because they are designed to sail long distances.

“The vessels can be equipped with three 400hp engines and boast a speed of over 60 knots, equivalent to almost 115km per hour,” the executive told Bloomberg Linea.

Partnerships

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) is another nautical event on the agenda of the world’s main boatyards in Florida, and this year it is scheduled for October 25 to 29.

Allan Cechelero, CEO of Triton Yachts, emphasizes the role of closing partnerships to expand the international operations. He says the US market demands a lot and that, in order to conquer clients there, it is necessary to participate in fairs in Florida, such as in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Triton Yachts operates in North America under the Hanover brand in partnership with Blueride Marine LLC Group, an exclusive dealer.

“To further expand our presence in the country, Triton Yachts is represented by the Hanover brand and has partnered with Blue Ride Group, a local exclusive dealer of these models. In addition, the Miami Boat Show was an excellent opportunity to get even closer to our clients”, said Cechelero.

The North American market is seen as a watershed for Brazilian shipyards.

“It is gratifying seen this model exported for the first time in such a short time, especially after it was launched less than a year ago,” said Armatti Yachts CEO Fernando Assinato. “In Brazil, more than five units have already been sold, some of which are still in the design phase.”

Other markets are on the radar of the boatyards. The Santa Catarina luxury yacht brand Okean Yachts already exports boats to countries such as the USA, France, Spain, and Japan. The next bet is Australia, which has about 1 million registered boats scattered over 350 marinas, with 35% of them imported.

In January, the Okean 52, valued at more than $2 million, unloaded in Melbourne. The six-year-old yard says it has already delivered more than $80 million in recreational vessels, with 90% of production being exported.

“We expect to have more Okean Yachts sailing in Australia soon, especially after important events such as the Sydney Boat Show, which takes place in July, and yacht fairs such as the one in Queensland, in the east of the country, with coral reefs and well known for its natural beauty,” says Ike Moreira Ferreira, Okean Yachts’ director.

The Brazilian nautical industry also builds large luxury vessels, such as the Azimut Grande 27 Metri, a model valued at more than $11.20 million. Since 2020, the yacht has also been manufactured in the Azimut Benetti group’s shipyard in Brazil, the only production subsidiary outside Italy.

With a factory in Brazil since 2010, Azimut posted domestic revenue of $82 million during the nautical year 2021/2022 (September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022). For the period 2022/2023 the projection is to exceed $102 million, a 25% increase.

Francesco Caputo, CEO of Azimut Yachts Brazil, says the megayacht designs seek to be inspired by high luxury residences. This is the case of the Grande 27 Metri, which the shipyard considers the most luxurious yacht made in Brazil, with her 27 meters, produced in the industrial park in Itajaí, Santa Catarina.

Bloomberg Línea: Compared to last year, there was an increase in costs and a pass-through to the product with readjustment in the prices of speedboats?

Fernando Assinato: We have noticed a rise in the cost of production and supplies for our vessels in the last two years and, consequently, this increase impacts the final value. On the other hand, exports dodge inflation oscillations due to the exchange rate and dollar appreciation, and this allows us to sell the boats with a higher final value abroad, mainly in the U.S.

What is the advantage of the Brazilian-produced motorboat in the perception of foreign customers in terms of price and features?

The main advantage of a boat produced in Brazil is having a lower production cost compared to other countries, especially the boats produced in Santa Catarina, due to the tax incentive. Thus, large shipyards choose the state to open a production branch in Brazil. In addition, the labor force in the south of the country is one of the most qualified, and accounts for 80% of the production of the Brazilian fleet.

Where is Brazil in terms of global sales of yachts?

According to Acobar [the Brazilian Association of Boat Builders and Implements], Brazil is a country with a lot of potential, but it is still in a nautical maturing process. Today, Brazil has the capacity to produce 3,500 fiberglass boats per year, between 16 and 100 feet, and part of this volume is exported. The association confirms that in 2021, for example, there was a 10% growth in the number of exports, and in 2022 this percentage should reach 30%.

Powered by twin MTU engines, she comfortably cruises at 14 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 19 knots with a range of up to 3,000 nautical miles from her 61,500 litre fuel tanks at cruising speed. Her low draft of 2.2m/7'3" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines.

When not cruising Brazil has onboard an incredible selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to connect with the waters around you. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. Also there are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. €900k price drop on 44m Heesen motor yacht Brazil

A €900,000 price drop has been announced on the 44-metre motor yacht Brazil , listed for sale with Arvid Ljungberg of MYSEA .

Built in aluminium by Dutch yard Heesen Yachts to a design by Richard Hein and the late Gerhard Gilgenast , Brazil is ABS classed and was delivered in 1993 with several upgrades since. Her most recent refit was completed in 2022, with the "multi-million-euro" works including a four-metre extension, the addition of a Jacuzzi and new all-electric CMC stabilisers. 

Her contemporary interior can accommodate up to ten guests in five staterooms comprising a master suite with a king-sized bed, two further queen-sized doubles and two twin cabins. All of the guest cabins come with entertainment systems, LCD televisions and en-suite facilities. There is also room for a crew of eight on board. 

Her relaxing main deck saloon has a lounging and relaxation area, an entertainment centre including a large-screen television and electrically operated sunshades and curtains. Forward is a separate dining room with comfortable seating for up to ten guests and outside, the aft deck is equipped for al fresco dining with a large rectangular table for up to ten guests. More outdoor enjoyment is available on the expansive sun deck, with dining for up to 12 guests, a bar, a barbecue, a six-person Jacuzzi and multiple sun pads.

Twin 2,200hp MTU diesel engines on this 361GT yacht for sale power her to a cruising speed of 14 knots, topping out at 19 knots. 

Brazil is now asking €6,000,000 with VAT paid.

BRAZIL is a semi-displacement yacht and comes VAT paid. During her latest refit carried out at the Zwijnenburg Shipyard in Holland in close collaboration with Snijder Yachts, she underwent extensive upgrades, including the undertaking of a 4m extension of her swim platform, creating a large sea terrace & beach club. A transformer passerelle was installed also acting as a tender & jetski lift system. The bridge deck saw a 1.5m extension allowing for a large socialising space with plenty of room for sunbathing and dining. Other updates saw the installation of a new Jacuzzi, new generators, new 100% electric CMC Zero speed stabilisers, and an all new digital Tijssen MPA system. Cannes yacht encounter triggered alleged $1.8 billion fraud that put Malaysia’s ex-prime minister in prison

It began with a meeting on a  yacht  off the coast of Cannes in the summer of 2009. The newly-elected prime minister of Malaysia was aboard at the invitation of businessman Jho Low and Saudi-Swiss businessman Tarek Obaid. The men had gathered   to explore deals for Malaysia’s new economic development fund, 1MDB. 

Fifteen years later, the prime minister is in a Malaysian prison serving  time  for corruption. Low, the alleged mastermind behind the  $4.5 billion  defrauding of 1MDB, remains at large. And Obaid and his business partner Patrick Mahony will stand trial at Switzerland’s top criminal court on April 2, accused of creating a sham oil exploration company through which they stole more than $1.8 billion in 1MDB funds.  

Neither Mahony or Obaid have spoken in public about their deals with Jho Low, a round-faced businessman they nicknamed ‘Chunk.’ The month-long trial, set in Switzerland because the two men based their business there, may reveal fresh details about the fugitive, who is suspected of pulling off arguably the biggest financial heist of the 21st century. Mahony   has denied the charges and pleaded not guilty. A lawyer for Obaid didn’t return multiple messages seeking comment on the charges.

It’s also a chance for Switzerland, seen as a soft touch on white-collar criminals, to demonstrate it can be tough on financial crime. A former Coutts & Co. banker found guilty in 2020 of failing to flag money-laundering concerns related to a $700 million transfer made by Low was fined just 50,000 Swiss francs ($55,700). 

Prosecutors claim that the pair worked with Low on the scheme from as early as 2009, and the amounts at stake make it one of the largest frauds that Low allegedly helped orchestrate.

Mahony has been charged with criminal mismanagement, fraud, bribery and aggravated money-laundering, according to the 213-page indictment, with Obaid accused of all that and forgery. A conviction just on fraud charges carries a prison sentence of as much as 10 years, though in many Swiss cases, the sentence is suspended.  

In the indictment, Swiss prosecutors lay out the pair’s alleged scheme — which, they say, included negotiating on behalf of a Saudi king they had no mandate from, while claiming the rights to a Caspian Sea oilfield that they never controlled — from that first Mediterranean meeting in 2009. 

A lawyer for Obaid didn’t return emails seeking comment on the charges against her client. Laurent Baeriswyl, a lawyer for Mahony, said by email that the indictment is the result of a “totally biased and incomplete investigation.”

The Swiss Attorney General’s Office “ignored all the facts which did not correspond to its thesis, contrary to what the law requires” and so “our client therefore strongly contests the facts as they emerge from the indictment and he will defend his rights before the Federal Criminal Court.”

Saudi Connections?

Obaid founded oil exploration company Petrosaudi in 2005 with his acquaintance Prince Turki Bin Abdullah al Saud, determined to capitalize on the connections that royal name could enable. 

But even with that woven into the company’s pitch, the ambitious 30-year-old still needed cash. He had secured a modest loan through Patrick Mahony, a former classmate from private school in Geneva, who would become Petrosaudi’s unofficial chief investment officer in 2009, according to the indictment. But he needed more, prosecutors say, and turned to Low.

Communicating only through encrypted BlackBerry messages and private email accounts, the three men got to work on the company. But according to the indictment, their strategy had little to do with oil exploration. 

Prosecutors highlighted emails among the three men to drive home their argument that Petrosaudi didn’t control the assets it purported to have, nor did it have the Saudi monarch’s blessing. According to one sent in mid-September 2009 before an introductory call with a 1MDB executive, it was imperative to “hint that PSI is indirectly owned by King Abdullah.”

Turki, the seventh son of the late King Abdullah, isn’t accused of any wrongdoing in connection with Petrosaudi, and didn’t exercise any operational role within the company, according to prosecutors. Turki was one of several princes detained in November 2017 by Saudi Arabia’s defacto ruler Mohammed bin Salman, and his current whereabouts are unclear. 

Turkmeni Oil

Following the Cannes   meeting, Obaid proposed that 1MDB and Petrosaudi create a joint venture to exploit Petrosaudi’s stake in a Turkmeni oilfield. Obaid laid out in writing, according to prosecutors, that Petrosaudi would bring “$2 billion worth of its assets in the energy sector into the joint-venture company.” 

There was one problem: Petrosaudi didn’t own the oilfield or the rights to it, but was rather in stalled negotiations with a firm that had paid $10 million to buy up the rights. But those paper rights were essentially worthless as the oilfield lay in waters whose ownership was disputed by Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. 

So Obaid turned to an oil consultant and old family friend to value the oilfield. Nine days later, he produced a report that put the “fair net present value” of the assets at between $2.98 billion and $4.06 billion.

With that hefty valuation in writing and the Saudi royal family’s backing established in the minds of 1MDB executives, the board of directors signed off on Sept. 26, 2009, and two days later authorized the transfer of $1 billion to bank accounts held by the new joint venture, 1MDB PetroSaudi. 

Three hundred million of that went to an account controlled by Obaid, according to prosecutors. The remaining $700 million went to GoodStar, which was falsely presented as a unit of PetroSaudi but was in fact a Seychelles-based entity controlled by Low. On Oct. 5, the businessman wired $85 million of that to an account held in Obaid’s name. Obaid, in turn, wired $33 million to Mahony on Oct. 21. 

The following year, prosecutors allege that the pair set about extracting additional money from 1MDB. Obaid had persuaded the fund to turn the joint venture into a loan facility and he drew down $500 million, ostensibly to invest in French oil company GDF Suez.

Newly flush, the pair appeared keen to distribute the funds quickly, emails show.  

“Right now we are in a good situation because we have this money in a clean and proper legal way so there is nothing anybody can do to us,” Mahony wrote to Obaid in September 2010. 

The next day, he transferred $300 million into Obaid’s personal account and the remaining $200 million to Petrosaudi accounts he controlled, according to prosecutors. 

Then in 2011, Obaid drew down again, this time for $330 million, prosecutors allege. To pressure the Malaysians to accept, he reminded them of how King Abdullah helped evacuate Malaysian Muslims during the Arab Spring protests, and how he had increased the quota of Malaysian Muslims able to make the pilgrimage to Mecca. 

Between 2009 and the end of 2011, prosecutors say that the men took a total of $1.83 billion from 1MDB, with Obaid personally pocketing $580 million, and Mahony, $37 million. 

Bangkok Prison

Obaid and Mahony’s 2023 indictment was based in part on the testimony of Xavier Justo, the third employee at Petrosaudi. After just a year at the company, Justo left and was arrested in Thailand in June 2015. Convicted of attempted blackmail in what he says was a conspiracy on the part of Obaid, Mahony and the Malaysian authorities to silence him, the Swiss national spent 18 months in prison before his country’s government intervened to help get him released. 

Documents Justo shared with  The Sarawak Report,  a blog focused on corruption in Malaysia, led to the first  expose  of the Petrosaudi pair in 2015. He published a  book  last year, co-written with his wife, chronicling his experience with the two men. 

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission flagged its own arrest warrants for Obaid and Mahony to Interpol in early 2020. It’s unclear if they were ever detained and Swiss prosecutors declined to say whether they ordered their arrest. 

Years on, Justo says he hopes that his country’s justice system will now do the right thing.  

“This is the perfect opportunity for Switzerland to show the world that it is serious about fighting financial crime and that it is prepared to punish those who perpetrate it,” he said.

“Fallout,” the post-apocalyptic series debuting this week on Amazon Prime, is expected to relocate to California for its second season, thanks to $25 million in California tax credits.

The California Film Commission announced Monday that it has awarded $152 million in tax incentives to a dozen TV shows.

The list also includes two shows from Ryan Murphy, “Dr. Odyssey” on ABC and “Grotesquerie” on FX, as well as “NCIS: Origins,” a prequel show due out next season on CBS.

“Fallout” has the largest budget of any of the shows, at $153 million in qualified expenditures for the season. The first season was produced mostly in New York, with some filming in Utah.

California’s tax incentive is largely geared toward luring away TV shows that have already started production in another state or overseas. Such shows get a credit worth 25% of their qualified expenditures, and also get 20% in every subsequent season.

Overall, the state awards about $330 million annually, with 57% going to TV shows and 43% to films. The credit is intended to combat “runaway production” — the tendency of productions to chase tax incentives in other states and in countries like Canada and the U.K.

Studios apply for California credits during multiple funding rounds each year, and credits are awarded based on their potential job creation.

“Fallout” comes from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of “Westworld,” and is based on a popular video game franchise.

Even when a show has been allocated tax credits to move to California, that does not guarantee that it will actually do so.

A year ago, Amazon was awarded $25 million to relocate the second season of “Citadel” to California. However, the show was later withdrawn from the program, and the money has been put back in the general pool for other shows.

It’s been reported that the show will begin filming its second season in September, in Toronto.

In an upfront season impacted by the fallout from the Hollywood strikes and larger discontent in the advertising market, AMC Networks is approaching this year with “flexibility” in mind, the company’s chief commercial officer Kim Kelleher says.

“We believe transparency is going to be important this year.Where’s my content running? What genres of show? Did it deliver?” adds Evan Adlman, AMC’s executive VP of commercial sales and revenue operations. “And then to the flexibility part, I think it’s being able to be flexible amongst transaction type. And since audience-led offerings are really performing well today, I think the ones that have very excellent data targeting capabilities, and giving the advertiser flexibility to move between products, is something that we’re anticipating to see this year.”

In addition to its lineup of new and returning shows, AMC Networks is also bringing new offerings to its digital slate.

For starters, just a few months after rolling out an advertising-supported tier of AMC+, the company will also be bringing ad tiers to its niche streaming services, like Shudder (horror); Acorn TV (global thrillers and dramas fro the U.K., Australia, Ireland, etc.); HIDIVE (Japanese anime); ALLBLK (focused on Black audiences); and Sundance Now.

“We’ve seen huge adoption [of the ad tier of AMC+] and it hasn’t cannibalized our core subscribers, so we’re really seeing it as added additive,” Kelleher added.

The company is also adding to its “Content Room,” the company’s branded entertainment studio.

That includes new programming, including a second season of In the Kitchen with Harry Hamlin (the first season was sponsored by Whole Foods); another season of the behind-the-scenes series Show Me More ; and new shows The Walking Dogs , which profile the beloved dogs of stars from the Walking Dead franchise; and Vibe Check with Reginae , hosted by Reginae Carter of the WE tv seris Toya & Reginae .

And AMC Networks is leaning further into the horror genre, betting that it can be a new platform for marketers to explore. The company has hired Josh Ruben (he’s a well-known horror writer/actor/director of Scare Me and Werewolves Within ) to be its “ambassador of horror,” a “concierge,” in the words of Kelleher, to help brands find their place in the genre.

Ruben, Granito says “is going to be writing, producing and creating custom horror films for our partners that will air within all of the horror environments that we have across the portfolio.”

AMC Networks plans to discuss the new offerings, as well as its programming, at an upfront event in New York this week, getting ahead of the chaos that will follow in late April and May.

Kelleher says this year’s pitch will be “a much more immersive experience and bring our shows to life.”
