Come see this beautifully restored classic vessel!!

MAJOR PRICE REDUCTION FROM $110,000!!!!!

S/V JOSS is a classic vessel by renowned designer Thomas Colvin and is constructed from his favorite material, minimum 9/32 inch Aluminum Alloy Plate by Greenwich Yachts, Richond British Columbia in 1975.

The owner has just finished a 2 year, no expense spared, refinish, rebuild and rerig. First glimpse of this classic is that it must be a new build. When you get closer it looks better than a new boat. The hull appears to have been dipped in a large tank of white Awlgrip and is still wet. The finish is show quality. The interior of the hull has been coated with blown insulation to insulate and stop condensation.

JOSS has sailed throughout Mexico, Central America, Caribbean and the Bahamas in complete saftey and comfort.

This visably striking vessel will easily pass the most strict inspection and survey and provide the new owner with decades of of use and enjoyment.

PRICE REDUCED $10,000 JAN. 10,14. THIS THE BEST COLVIN ON THE MARKET!!!!!!

Easy entry from the side of this boat is made possible by the low midship freeboard. You are immediately at the helm and entry to the forward cabin and the aft cabin are just a couple steps away.

The decks are remarkably easy to walk. Going forward allows easy access to the masts and ground tackle.

Walking to the stern is a simple task and allows access to the aluminum dingy.

Entering the aft cabin is done by sliding the beautifully finished teak hatch. A couple steps down you see the comfortable queen bed and sitting area.

Leaving the aft cabin, we walk past the helm and again open the other beautiful teak hatch. A couple steps down again, and you are in the galley area with the sink and stove to the right and nav station on the left.

Looking aft you find the door to the engine room and small shop. Inside reveals unlimited access to the SAAB engine and the batteries.

Leaving there, we notice the beautifull arched ceiling as we walk through the galley. The settees are to the left and right and the table is on the right. The table also goes down to form another berth.

Going forward, we pass trough a door that leads to the head and shower which has another door for privacy from the V-berth forward.

1990 Colvin Gazelle 42

  • Description

Seller's Description

The steel hulled junk rigged schooner the Gazelle 42 was American boat designer Thomas Colvins most successful vessel, great for coastal cruising or offshore passages.

This Gazelle 42 is a very safe and simple vessel, offered for sale in excellent condition by the original owner. The boat was built professionally by Horizon Yachts in BC in 1990 using 10 gauge steel, with steel in the keel sections. The original plywood roof was removed, and rebuilt in steel to increase the safety & longevity of the vessel. At the same time, extra ballast and 4 was added to the keel on recommendation from the designer. The hull was recently repainted above and below the waterline, is rust free and ready to go.

The junk rig is a safe, secure and very easy to sail. With full sail up, this unique vessel is very pretty and will turn heads. The extendable bowsprit reduces the LOA and your marina fees, while providing plenty of power out on the water. Wide side decks make moving fore and aft easy, and the solid lifelines and the center helm make this is an extremely safe vessel. Plus with sleeping accommodations for up to 7, there is room for the whole family. But perhaps best of all, this boat was repowered in 2018 with a brand new 28 hp Volvo Penta diesel engine with only 42 hours!!!

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Similar to the CLASSIC 22, GRAMPIAN 22, BLUEJACKET 23(PACESHIP), and VIKING 22.

European Union criticizes Russia for removing Estonian buoys, demand an explanation from Moscow

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Friday called the removal of Estonian buoys by Russian border guards on a river separating the Baltic country from Russia “unacceptable,” and demanded an explanation from Moscow and the immediate return of the orange floats.

Early Thursday, Estonian border guards noticed that their Russian counterparts had removed 25 of the 50 buoys that Estonia had installed on the Narva River to prevent boats from accidentally crossing the border.

Borrell said the incident “is part of a broader pattern of provocative behavior and hybrid actions by Russia.”

Estonia also dubbed it “unacceptable,” but said its response “remains calm and clear-eyed.”

"We treat this as a provocative border incident,” the Foreign Ministry in Tallinn said Thursday.

For decades, Estonia and Russia have installed buoys on the Narva River for the summer, with the towns of Narva on the Estonian side and Ivangorod on the Russian bank, largely in mutual agreement.

Every year, the marking of the shipping routes is rechecked because “the riverbed changes over time,” said Eerik Purgel, the local Estonian Border Guard head. Last year, Russia said it did not agree with the locations of the Estonian buoys.

This year, "we decided to release the floating marks into the water for the summer season according to a 2022 agreement, because they are necessary to avoid navigational errors, so that our fishermen and other hobbyists do not accidentally wander into Russian waters,” he said.

The first 50 buoys were installed on May 13. However, 25 of them were removed by their Russian counterparts early in the morning 10 days later, he added.

The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday summoned Russia’s deputy head of mission, the Baltic News Service agency said. BNS quoted Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna as saying that they “clearly expressed to the Russian charge d’affaires that such actions are provocative and unacceptable."

Estonia’s Foreign Ministry said the action “fits well within the broader pattern of Russia’s provocative behavior,” and drew parallels to the border mapping incidents in the Baltic Sea earlier this week. According to media reports, Moscow could revise the borders of its territorial waters in the region.

The draft proposal was published on an official Russian government website for draft legislation but disappeared hours after it was posted on Wednesday. It wasn’t immediately clear why.

Russian media said the Defense Ministry in Moscow had suggested updating the coordinates used to measure the strip of territorial waters off its mainland coast and that of its islands in the Baltic Sea. The existing coordinates were approved in 1985, the ministry says, adding that they were “based on small-scale nautical navigation maps” and don’t correspond to the “modern geographical situation.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said there was “nothing political” in the Defense Ministry’s proposal, and Russian news agencies said Moscow did not intend to revise the border or the width of its territorial waters.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, Finland and Sweden have joined NATO, meaning that the Baltic Sea — Russia’s maritime point of access to the city of St. Petersburg and its Kaliningrad enclave — is now almost surrounded by members of the military alliance.

Richard M. Sherman, two-time Oscar winner who collaborated with brother Robert B. Sherman on the songs for “ Mary Poppins ,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and the enduring Disneyland tune “It’s a Small World (After All),” died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills due to age-related illness. He was 95.

The Sherman brothers worked in a job that no longer exists: inhouse songwriters for a studio. In their case, the studio was Disney, and the brothers were hired for that steady gig after their 1958 song “Tall Paul” was a hit for Mouseketeer Annette Funicello.

Also in 1964, the Shermans wrote the songs for “Mary Poppins,” which was their biggest success. The brothers won Oscars on both of their nominations, for music score and for song “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” The score also includes “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” and a song that was a personal favorite of Disney, “Feed the Birds.”

The Shermans worked directly for studio topper Disney until his death in 1966. After that, they continued to provide material for the studio, including the musicals “The One and Only Genuine Original Family Band” (1967) and “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” (1971) and occasional animated films, notably the 1967 “The Jungle Book” (including “I Wanna Be Like You,” performed by Louis Prima).

Even when they weren’t working for the Mouse House, their songs carried a Disney sensibility — bouncy and positive, without any of the cynicism so prevalent in creative works (including music) in the late 1960s and 1970s. All of the Shermans’ songs had a catchy hook, and straightforward, unfussy lyrics with an upbeat attitude. At their best, the duo came up with “Feed the Birds,” heartbreaking in its tenderness, or “Wanna Be Like You,” an infectious Dixieland-style number.

On the other hand, their “Small World” and “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” (written for Disneyland’s Carousel of Progress) are like commercial jingles: less than a minute long and with a sing-song simplicity that is either fun or grating, depending on your mood.

They wrote the score for a WWII-era musical, “Victory Canteen,” that ran for seven months at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood. That evolved into the 1974 Broadway show “Over Here!” with a book by Will Holt and starring two of the Andrews Sisters, Patty and Maxene. It was nominated for five Tony Awards but is best remembered for a cast of little-known performers including John Travolta, Marilu Henner, Treat Williams and Ann Reinking.

In 1973, the Sherman brothers became the first Americans to win top prize at the Moscow Film Festival, for “Tom Sawyer,” for which they also wrote the screenplay. They also penned the song score and script for “The Slipper and the Rose” (1976), a musical retelling of Cinderella.

The 2000 film “The Tigger Movie” featured a song score by the brothers, their first work on a Disney film in nearly 30 years.

The Shermans certainly had their share of misfires, but their best work has been long-lasting. In 2002, a legit “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” including six new songs by them, premiered at the London Palladium, while the Broadway production launched in 2005.

A legit “Mary Poppins” bowed in 2004 in the West End and two years later on Broadway. It featured the Shermans’ songs from the film, plus added tunes by others. P.L. Travers, author of the original “Mary Poppins,” was said to be so unhappy with the Disney film that she told legit producer Cameron Mackintosh that no Americans would be allowed to work on the stage version.

The tense Disney-Travers relationship was chronicled in the 2013 Disney film “Saving Mr. Banks,” in which Jason Schwartzman played Richard, and B.J. Novak portrayed Robert.

Robert Sherman had died in 2012, but Richard was an enthusiastic campaigner for the film during awards season, appearing at screenings and fronting a sing-along at the Beverly Hills Hotel for awards voters.

In all, the brothers earned nine Oscars (seven of them from 1968 through 1978) plus four Grammy Award nominations (and two wins) and 23 gold and platinum albums. In 2008, they were awarded the National Medal of Arts at the White House by President George W. Bush.

Most recently, Richard Sherman appeared in the animated short, “Once Upon a Studio,” the animated short that  celebrates 100 years  of stories and magic. Iconic characters like Snow White and Peter Pan feature alongside  Robin Williams ’ Genie in a cast of 543 characters from more than 85 feature-length and short films. Richard Sherman makes a cameo playing “Feed the Birds” on the piano in Walt Disney’s Burbank office. Richard Sherman’s cameo came at the suggestion of the studio’s head of music, Matthew Walker. The short’s producer Yvett Merino told  Variety , “ It was truly amazing. We were able we were able to share this short with him, thanks to Howard (Green, Legacy Communications Executive for Disney Animation) early on.” Merino added, “We shared the completed version for him near his birthday, and so it was truly an ‘Oh my gosh, this is this really happening’ moment for all of us.”

“Richard Sherman was the embodiment of what it means to be a Disney Legend, creating along with his brother Robert the beloved classics that have become a cherished part of the soundtrack of our lives,” said Bob Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company. “From films like ‘Mary Poppins ‘ and ‘The Jungle Book’ to attractions like It’s a Small World, the music of the Sherman Brothers has captured the hearts of generations of audiences. We are forever grateful for the mark Richard left on the world, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.”

Richard Sherman was born in 1928, three years after Robert. Their father was a songwriter, and the family moved around frequently but settled down in Beverly Hills in 1937. After his 1946 graduation from Beverly Hills High School, Richard Sherman went to Bard College, majoring in music.

In 1957, Sherman married Elizabeth Gluck, with whom he had two children: Gregory and Victoria. Lynda (Sherman) Rothstein is his daughter from a previous marriage.
