Njord Superyacht

All too often the boldest superyacht concepts don’t actually make it to the water. That’s not the case with Njord , though. The epic 948-footer, which was unveiled by Ocean Residences Development (ORD) last year , could hit the seas within the next four years.

Billed as “world’s largest private residence yacht,” Njord will be built at Meyer Werft with a target delivery of 2025, according to a recent announcement . Throughout its two-century run, the German shipyard has delivered around 50 luxury liners and is adept at constructing vessels of such proportions.

Named after the god of the seas and winds in Norse mythology, Njord is practically a lavish high rise primed for clean, ocean adventures. The vessel will be fitted with 117 exclusive residences with between two and six bedrooms each. The pick of the bunch, however, is the 16 duplexes and triplexes that come complete with their own private elevators. Each abode starts at $8 million depending on the size and the cost of ownership maintenance is 5 percent of the purchase price.

Seafarers will have the full run of the onboard amenities, too, which include multiple outdoor terraces, a sundeck, beach club, two outdoor pools, an indoor hydro pool, wellness facilities, a nightclub, jazz lounge and even an observatory. There are also RIBs, toys and tenders for further fun and exploration.

Njord will embark on journeys all across the globe, from Antarctica to the Mediterranean. Better still, it will do so sustainably. The vessel will be built to the “strictest” environmental regulations to minimize its carbon footprint. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art dual-fuel engines, batteries for hybrid operation, heat recovery systems and advanced power management systems.

Furthermore, Njord will feature a professional oceanographic laboratory that will help the scientific and research community tackle climate change and other pressing issues.

“Our company is proud to embark on building the finest green ship ever built,” added shipyard owner Bernard Meyer. “Meyer Werft’s commitment to ocean conservation is a top priority, the vision of M/Y Njord as a Ship With A Purpose is directly aligned with our company values and commitment to the environment.”

The Meyer family has kept its shipbuilding company on course for 226 years – that’s seven generations. Currently Bernard Meyer and his sons Jan and Tim sit on the MEYER management board.

The company was founded in Papenburg, Germany and our shipyard facilities are still located there to this day. This is where the shipyard’s founder, Willm Rolf Meyer, started building small wooden sailing boats in 1795. More than 700 ships of different types have been built at the yard to date.

The other shipyards in the 6.500 employee strong MEYER Group are NEPTUN WERFT in Rostock and MEYER TURKU in Finland. We design and build ships tailored to the needs of our clients and with a wealth of expertise and innovative solutions. Our new yachting division MEYER Yachts follows exactly the same path.

exceptional excellence

Crafted with passion and expertise..

With two covered building halls and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Papenburg, we are one of the largest and most modern shipyards in the world with halls of 370 and 504 metres in length. Around 50 luxury vessels have left our shipyard – and the next vessels are already under construction.

We also benefit from the efforts of several partners who are involved in the construction of our ships and yachts. Our affiliates in the MEYER Group work alongside many external suppliers to have an extensive network for all kinds of requests.

We work closely with around 2,000 employees at our partner companies in day-to-day operations. This means the MEYER Group generates a total of 40,000 jobs in the shipbuilding and supply industry, as well as in various trades involved in operations in Germany, Finland and other European countries.

We know that our success is mainly due to our craftsmen and partner companies. That’s why we continue to promote cooperative partnerships and assume responsibility for people, the region and the environment. Lots of our employees are the third or fourth generation within their family to work at MEYER – they have known the MEYER spirit since childhood.

Freedom means

Responsibility., we build the yachts of tomorrow., for us, engineering therefore means sustainability..

At MEYER we strongly believe that we have a duty to build our products as environmentally friendly as possible. That’s why our specialist technicians and engineers are constantly working on the most advanced technologies that will make our yachts even more efficient and sustainable.

adobestock_120590281_small_web

The development of the LNG drive system for example has consolidated our position as the technological leader in the construction of cruise liners, and it’s also a huge incentive for us to continue our research.

Our objective is to build climate neutral yachts with alternative and renewable fuels – we’re putting all our passion and courage into the development of new ideas.

MEYER will also start testing fuel cells as the next milestone in the development of climate-neutral shipping solutions. Fuel cells are seen as the technology of the future. The concept is as simple as it is ingenious – hydrogen plus oxygen generates electricity and heat. Hydrogen is obtained from methanol, which can be produced sustainably from renewable energy sources. This means fuel cells operate without any harmful emissions – they only produce water vapour. The technology also reduces noise and vibration, which is an important requirement for yacht operations.

We look forward realizing

Meyer Werft builds LNG-powered superyacht

by Martin Vodnik | Aug 10, 2021 | News , Shipbuilding , Yachts

meyer werft mega yacht

After a year-long pause, Meyer Werft, a major German builder of luxury yachts, is continuing to extend its order portfolio. By the end of 2025, the shipyard will construct a residential superyacht that will be able to accommodate up to 1,000 people. Another key feature of the vessel is the LNG propulsion system.

Meyer Werft has won the second order since the pandemic outbreak. The Papenburg-based shipyard will build a residential yacht for Ocean Residences Development. Despite the vessel will be completed by the end of 2025, it has been already named Njord. The ship will have the following dimensions: a gross tonnage of 84,8000 tonnes, a length of 289.3 metres, a width of 33.5 meters. Around 1,000 people, including both crew and passengers, will be able to be accommodated in 117 apartments.

The German yacht builder is looking forward to this project. “With the new order, we are expanding our portfolio of ship types and can thus also improve the previously difficult prospects, especially for the years 2024/2025,” said Thomas Weigend, managing director of Meyer Werft. Meanwhile, the order is still subject to financing.

Focus on LNG

The NJORD yacht will be environmentally friendly in terms of propulsion. It will be equipped with low-emission LNG engines and a hybrid battery system enabling a maximum speed of 21 knots. To future-proof the vessel, the engines and fuel tanks will be prepared for easy conversion to future fuels with lower or neutral carbon footprints. Moreover, the ship will have the most modern heat recovery systems and advanced energy management systems onboard.

Oceanographic research

The superyacht was designed for becoming home to a community of individuals and families who share a passion for travel, adventure and discovery – across oceans, underwater, in the air and on land. It is also equipped to carry out oceanographic investigations by research organisations and scientific groups. The Njord yacht will fund research projects that help cross scientific boundaries and advance global ocean science that contributes to a better understanding of the complex systems that make up our planet.

Meyer Werft to build 289m private residence yacht Njord

The 289m private residence yacht Njord will be built at German shipyard Meyer Werft with a target delivery of 2025, it has been announced.

The project, which was revealed by Ocean Residences Development (ORD) last year, will be built to the "strictest" environmental regulations and feature "state-of-the-art dual-fuel engines", batteries for hybrid operation, heat recovery systems and advanced power management systems. The engines and fuel tanks will also be suitable for future fuels.

  • Inside the world's biggest private residence yachts

"We are fortunate to have the opportunity to partner with Meyer Werft, a company that has kept its shipbuilding on course for 226 years", said ORD chief executive Kristian Stensby. He described the shipyard as "the world leader in building innovative and complex passenger vessels with a stellar reputation for exceptional quality, precision and on-time deliveries."

  • Winch Design's 222m "private residence superyacht" revealed

“Our company is proud to embark on building the finest green ship ever built," added shipyard owner Bernard Meyer.

Billed as the "world's largest private residence yacht", Njord is named after the god of the seas and winds of Norse mythology. The 289 metre vessel contains 117 private residences and a 500 square metre inflatable marina at the stern of the vessel, which features a number of foldout platforms.

Spread across a total of 12 decks, Njord will feature a beam of 33.5 metres and a massive 81,000GT interior. Accommodation on board will be split across 118 residences, which are available to buy, as well as 16 guest and butler suites. Available in 20 different configurations, these residences will range from two to six-bedroom apartments spread across 116 to 800 square metres.

Njord has been designed by a team of engineers, naval architects and interior and exterior designers, including legendary superyacht designer Espen Øino , who has penned the exterior of the project, and naval architect Foreship OY. ORD's chief designer Jean Stutzman will oversee the interior design, which will be created by Jean-Michel Gathy of Malaysian design studio Denniston and Italian design studio FM Architettura . Both studios will be responsible for designing the vessel's top private residences and penthouses.

The interior design of the luxury residences is described as “homely, comfortable, smart casual and contemporary”. There are plenty of options for residents to customise their apartments to their tastes, choosing from a range of premium features, such as walk-in wine cellars, cheese rooms, humidors, safe rooms, private gyms, saunas and steam rooms.

Gathy’s designs will be playful, while a “sense of ease and lightness” will combine “layers of creativity” to create “cosiness, energy” and “comfort”.

"Everything is in the details and ultimately, I want to create a shelter, a safe haven, where those who choose to live onboard Njord can close their eyes and let the day work them, instead of them working the day," Gathy said.

FM Architettura 's designs meanwhile have been inspired by "earth, air, wind and fire", according to studio co-founder Francesca Muzio.

The "earth" aspect will be found throughout the wood used on board, "be it in the bespoke furniture, flooring or structural partitions", Muzio said. The air will be found in the "lightness" of the interiors, specifically in the "handmade carpets and bespoke woven textiles" which will "lead the eye around the space."

The "fire" will be found in the "bespoke bronze furniture, glass or the lighting", which will "punctuate the rooms". "Water" meanwhile is the "all-important element", Muzio said, "to ensure the flow and balance of the design comes together in its entirety, as these are homes which must have a sense of place.”

Dubbed the “next generation of private superyacht”, Njord “will be the home to an exclusive community of like-minded individuals who relish travel and sharing extraordinary experiences”, ORD said.

To this end, the vessel will be equipped to undertake scientific and oceanographic research during its annual circumnavigation of the globe. Each year, it will journey to some of the most remote and “culturally unique” places on earth.

Supporting a range of philanthropic missions, charities and causes, Njord will collect environmental and marine data from around the world which will be made available to international research laboratories.

The vessel will be equipped for the job, with a fully fitted oceanographic research laboratory staffed by expert scientists. Elsewhere, the vessel will feature a gyroscopic telescope, which will scan the sky at night, while drones will monitor the atmosphere.

Underwater drones, meanwhile, together with Njord’s two submersibles, will map the ocean floor using multi-beam echo sounders to identify shipwrecks and sea bed features. Njord will also have two eight-seat, Airbus ACH 160 helicopters with a range of 400 nautical miles. These will be used exclusively by owners and guests.

Elsewhere, Njord will boast an impressive list of luxury amenities including multiple outdoor terraces, a sundeck, two outdoor pools, an indoor hydro pool, extensive wellness facilities and a nightclub and jazz lounge. A telescope observatory lounge will sit on the top deck.
