The Power Catamaran Compilation

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: December 21, 2018

Power Catamarans have been growing leaps and bounds in popularity, and, in lengths and widths. And for good reason. These cruise-centric yachts offer homelike livability for avid travelers, are fuel efficient and are fairly intuitive to run. Power cats are popular in the bareboat charter market too, for these very reasons.

Here, we take a look at 12 catamarans ranging from a cruising-couple-size 36-footer to a 78-footer for friends, family and some more friends. And there are myriad power options: outboards, diesel inboards, hybrid or even all-solar power.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent-Yachts 55

The ideas about which solar panels, electric motors, inverters and the like to use — and more importantly, Michael Köhler says, how to configure them — became the basis for the brand Silent-Yachts. The company offers 55-, 64- and 79-foot catamarans that run on solar-electric propulsion. The Silent 55 premiered this fall, and the 64 is sold out for the next two years, Köhler says.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the Horizon PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC60

To understand the Horizon PC60 power catamaran , you need to put aside preconceived notions about midsize yacht amenities. For example, main-deck master suites are the province of yachts over 100 feet length overall. Incorrect. This 60-footer has an elegant and spacious owner’s stateroom on the same level as the salon. If you want a 14-foot center console tender on a 60-foot yacht, you have to tow it. Wrong again. On the PC60, you hoist it onto the upper deck, no problem.

40 Open Sunreef Power

Sunreef is known for pushing the boundaries of catamaran design, incorporating four adjustable hydrofoils into a twin-hulled speedboat.

The Polish builder is one of several European builders (including Evo, Fjord, Wider and Wally) transforming the open day-boat category with creative designs. Beyond its hydrofoils, the 40 Open Sunreef Power ‘s cockpit has side “wings” along the aft gunwales that fold out at anchor, widening the beam from 17 feet to 22 feet 9 inches.

Sunreef 50 Amber Limited Edition

Sunreef Yachts introduced its 50 Amber Limited Edition , with plans to launch just 10 hulls of the exclusive design.

The Sunreef 50 Amber Limited Edition will have a carbon fiber mast and boom, four layout options and numerous amber-colored elements, including the hull.

Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the Lagoon 630 MY burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY 37

The Fountaine Pajot MY 37 easily accommodates the seafaring family with three- and four-stateroom options. In the three-cabin version, called Maestro, you’ll find an owner’s suite in the portside hull with a queen-size berth and en suite head. Two double-berth cabins and one more head are available for the kids. If your brood is bigger, the Quator setup features four double cabins with two heads.

The 37 is a traveler and can be powered with twin 150 hp or 220 hp Volvo Penta diesels. Top speed with the smaller engines is 17 knots, while it’s 20 knots with the bigger power plants. Interestingly, at 7 knots, the fuel consumption is the same, with either set of motors offering voyagers a 1 ,000-nm range.

Solarwave 64

Many yachts boast eco chops because they have a handful of solar panels that power the microwave or navigation lights. The Solarwave 64 , launched last summer, has the potential to run on sunshine alone. The vessel’s 42 solar panels generate 15 kW that are stored in batteries weighing about 1,300 pounds. They connect to electric motors.

Glider SS18

This British builder says it strives for design innovation and the Glider SS18 displays that DNA, the result of 8 years of research and development. She has a head-turning, catamaran hull form constructed from aluminum and composite materials. She is 60 feet LOA with a 17-foot beam, and has a relatively shallow 1-foot draft. Powered by quad Yamaha 300 hp outboards, she can reportedly reach 50 knots, and with her Stability Control System (SCS), should give a smooth ride while doing it.

Power Catamarans

Power catamaran charters: what to expect.

Power catamaran Mucho Gusto

Power catamarans – or power cats, as they’re more commonly known – are a relatively new addition to the nautical world. Sailing catamarans, of course, have been around for centuries. But since the 1970s, more and more catamarans have ditched the sails for motors. The result: A fast, smooth and luxurious ride that provides the best of both worlds (sailing and motor yachting)!

Compared to traditional charter motor yachts, power catamarans offer some key benefits, and although they’re not as ubiquitous as monohull yachts, you’ll find power cats in nearly every charter fleet in the world. In fact, you can charter a power cat in any of the world’s finest yachting destinations – from Australia, to the Caribbean.

Today, power catamarans are a popular choice in the Bahamas and British Virgin Islands due to their higher top speeds, great efficiency and cruising stability. If you’re more familiar with traditional monohulls, you might not know much about power catamarans. Want to learn a bit about this incredible class of motor yacht? We’ve laid out some of the power catamaran’s distinctions, as well as why you might consider one for your next BVI or Bahamas charter.

What Is a Power Catamaran?

The simplest answer is that a power cat is a catamaran that’s been fitted with a diesel motor(s). As such, in terms of how it’s propelled, a power catamaran is very similar to a motor yacht.

In terms of design, though, the power catamaran closely resembles a sailing catamaran, albeit without a mast or sails. All power catamarans feature two hulls and a low-profile stance. These boats tend to sit closer to the water, and have wider platforms due to the dual hulls.

There are many reasons you might consider a power catamaran over a sailing yacht or traditional motor yacht. Here are a few reasons:

  • Stability – Thanks to the two-hull design, catamarans have much wider beams. That equals stability on the water. Even when cruising at max speed, power cats provide an incredible degree of stability. That’s why they’re such a popular choice for people who want a calm, relaxing ride.
  • Speed – Compared to monohull yachts, power catamarans are nimbler and capable of achieving higher top speeds. This is due in part to the fact that catamarans have less drag. (Their wider platforms greatly reduce drag waves.)
  • Efficiency – It might seem unbelievable, but even though catamarans are faster, they’re still more efficient. Because they reduce drag waves, power catamarans don’t have to work as hard to power through the water. As a result, compared to similar sized monohull yachts, a power cat might cost slightly less to charter.
  • Spaciousness – The entire below deck space of a catamaran stretches across both hulls. And because the beam of a power cat is typically wider than a traditional monohull, the interiors of power cats tend to be much more spacious. As a result, catamarans typically provide guests with a larger salon and more privacy below deck.
  • Relaxation – The wider beam also means more deck space, and as power cats don’t have sails, you’ll find much more space than a sailing catamaran. Most charter power catamarans have luxurious sundecks, beautiful aft decks and many have sky lounges with panoramic, 360-degree views.

Power Catamarans vs Sailing Catamarans

Whether you charter a power catamaran or a sailing catamaran, you can expect a truly first-class experience. Each night, you’ll be treated to a dinner made to your exact preferences, with impeccable service. Your cabins will be luxurious, and your captain and deck crew are happy to personalize your itinerary based on what you want to see and do.

Yet, beyond the service, there are some key differences between sailing and power cats. They include:

  • Speed/Efficiency – As mentioned, two of the key benefits of a power cat is speed and efficiency. Powered catamarans can reach speeds of 20+ knots, with incredible fuel economy. A sailing cat, of course, is powered by the wind, and in the right conditions, can reach top speeds of about 10 knots. As such, you can typically cover more ground and see more during a charter on a power cat.
  • Solitude – Sailing charters provide peace and quiet. It’s truly an experience for unwinding and relaxing. On a sailing catamaran in the right conditions, you’ll rarely use the motor, and as such, the onboard experience when cruising is more tranquil. With power boats, any time you are cruising, the motors are running (although as soon as you anchor, it’s just a peaceful). If you want the quiet, peaceful experience of sailing on the open seas, a power cat might not be the right choice.
  • Range – Sailing catamarans are a favorite for offshore, long-range sailing. If you want to cover long distances at sea, they’re the better choice (for example, if you’re going on a two-week Tahitian cruise). Power cats, though, offer more efficient cruising on shorter charters. They’re perfect in the BVI or Bahamas, allowing you to island hop more efficiently.

In both a sailing or power catamaran, you can expect the same stability. The wider platform eliminates almost all rolling and keeling, while cruising. At anchor, catamarans also tend to be more stable. Charter guests who are prone to seasickness tend to prefer catamarans over monohulls.

Power Catamaran Manufacturers

More and more luxury yacht manufacturers are entering the power catamaran market. Yet, the catamaran space is dominated by three luxury yacht manufacturers: Lagoon, Sunreef and Horizon.

This trio of catamaran builders are delivering some of the most luxurious and innovative power cats on the market (including several superyacht catamaran concepts). Most charter fleets have power cats available from each of these three builders, and all three offer something a little different.

  • Lagoon – The French-based Lagoon , which is a part of Beneteau Group, has been a leading catamaran builder for years. The shipyard is known for producing high-end, well-designed power cats, including its flagship, 24-meter Seventy8. All of Lagoon’s cats are custom builds, with each offering unique accommodations (like flybridge Jacuzzis, meeting rooms, and luxurious staterooms).
  • Sunreef – Sunreef  was founded in 2002, and in its brief history the Poland-based company has established itself as a leader in catamaran design. The company offers both sailing and power cats. Its line-up of power catamarans includes favorites like the 70 Sunreef Power JAMBO, one of the first double-decker, ocean-faring power cats on the market. Sunreef yachts have sleek, athletic profiles, and immaculate interiors. The brand is well-known for its performance capabilities, and most of its modern yachts include IPS Volvo propulsion. Sunreef also has introduced several concept power cats ranging in size from 90 to 210 feet.
  • Horizon – Horizon is one of the world’s largest luxury yacht builders, and offers a wide range of custom motor yachts including monohulls and multi-hulls. It’s line-up of power catamarans – the PC Series – includes some of the most beautiful and agile boats on the market. The PC60 and PC74, two favorites, feature Horizon’s sleek, classic yacht designs, matched with gorgeous interiors. Another signature feature: The PC Series yachts all feature sundecks and open flybridges. The top-of-the-mark model, the CC80, is an 80-foot yacht with a 28-foot beam, provide impressive spaciousness for a yacht of its size.

Bahamas Power Catamarans

The Bahamas make an ideal destination for a power cat charter. One reason – whether you’re in the Abacos or the Exuma Islands – you’ll likely be hopping from island to island. You need a yacht that’s designed for speed and efficiency, like the power cat. A speedier yacht will allow you to reach more of the Bahamas’ stunning islands, while on charter. Plus, power cat charters in the Bahamas offer calm, relaxing cruising, as well as plenty of space to unwind on- or below-deck. The shallow drafts also allow you to cruise into shallower waters, which is perfect for exploring the Bahamas’ remote reaches.

BVI Power Catamarans

Power catamarans are one of the most popular yacht choices for BVI charters . The reason: Power catamarans allow guests to cruise apace to all of the out islands – from Jost Van Dyke, to Norman Island – and reach more of the BVI’s hidden coves and sparkling lagoons like The Baths. BVI catamarans with spacious sundecks are the perfect option, allowing you and your guests to relax on-deck and take in the stunning scenery. Plus, this type of yacht is perfect for cruising in the BVI’s calm waters – reaching 20+ knots won’t be a problem. Powered catamarans are available for charter throughout the British Virgin Islands.

Cruise, Play, Stay

With all the comforts of home, arrowcat brings back the 20' center console, a unique design, understand why.

Enjoy your boat year-round and stay warm and dry during cooler weather or overnight trips, while also having a comfortable and private space to retreat for whenever you need a break. Here are a few reasons why an ArrowCat power cat is an excellent boat to consider.

A Catamaran Boat

Catamarans have two hulls, which provide more stability in the water. They are less likely to roll or pitch, which means they offer a more comfortable ride, especially in rough conditions and for people who are prone to seasickness.

Power catamarans are typically more fuel-efficient than monohull boats of the same size. It requires less energy and yields more performance per HP. The two hulls create little to no drag or resistance to get on plane, resulting in greater fuel economy. Allowing for longer journeys with fewer refueling stops.

Power catamarans have a shallow draft which means they can navigate in diverse cruising grounds – beaches, islands, rivers, channels, and coastal areas with limited water depth.

An Express Cruiser

Cabin boats are designed with comfortable sleeping quarters and living spaces. They feature a sleeping space with a bed, a galley with a stove, sink, and refrigerator, and a head with a shower and toilet.

Cabin boats provide protection from the elements, such as wind, sun, and rain. This allows for comfortable cruising in a variety of weather conditions, as well as providing a haven during storms

Express cruisers are designed for efficient and fast navigation, offering higher speeds compared to traditional cruising boats. They usually have powerful engines that enable them to cover long distances quickly, making them ideal for day trips or weekend getaways.

Powered By Outboard Motors

Outboard motors can provide excellent performance and speed. They can often reach higher speeds than inboard motors of the same horsepower.

Outboard motors have a simple and standard design and are relatively easy to install, they do not require additional components such as a transmission, propeller shaft, couplings, and struts, that inboard engines do. They are easily assessable and cost less to maintain than inboard motors because they are mounted outside at the rear of the boat.

Outboard motors are often designed with features that make them easy to maneuver. For example, they can be tilted or rotated to provide precise control and handling in tight spaces and shallower waters.

The British and US Virgin Islands are the most popular yacht charter destinations for crewed power catamaran charters. During the winter months, power catamarans from the Mediterranean and the Bahamas re-positioned to the Virgin Islands for the winter season.

  • Power Catamaran Charters – Fun, Fast and Comfortable

Power Catamarans, called Power Cats , are growing in popularity in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Caribbean, and Bahamas charter markets. We see more power cats built for the bareboat and crewed charter market. Two of the leading power catamaran builders with boats in the charter market are Sunreef Yachts and Horizon. Consider Power Catamaran Charters if you are interested in exploring paradise.

Power Catamaran Charters Feature

Like sailing catamarans, charter guests enjoy power cats for many reasons, including:

  • Flybridge with incredible 360-degree views
  • Flat decks with trampolines on the foredeck
  • Covered cockpit areas so the outdoors can be enjoyed out of the sun
  • Spacious cabins
  • Exceptionally smooth and fast rides
  • Main deck salon areas leading out to the cockpit/lounge area
  • Easy water access
  • Low fuel consumption combined with good performance
  • Crewed boats with 2 – 3 crew members
  • Ability to anchor in shallow waters closer to the beaches

Tandem Charters

Many of these boats have very similar accommodations. As a result, it is easy for large groups to charter multiple boats knowing that the quality is similar.

SEA BOSS and LA MANGUITA are two of The British Virgin Islands’ power cats that are great for Tandem charters. Both are Horizon PC60s sleeping six guests in three staterooms. There is a master cabin with a king bed and a VIP with a queen bed with two twin beds in the third stateroom. Of course, both boats are crewed with a wide array of fantastic water toys.

On a tandem charte r, guests benefit from having two boats that can vary in usage during the day. One group can go off fishing, while the other group can enjoy the spa ashore, rafting up in the evenings.

Power Catamaran Charters BVI

The BV) is an especially ideal charter destination for power catamarans. The islands are relatively close. And in fact, many have multiple anchorages where you can get close to the shore. On a BVI power catamaran charte r, you can visit most of the British Virgin Islands throughout a week’s vacation.

These power catamarans are modern and genuinely well-designed. Plus, the very experienced crews certainly know the cruising grounds. A truly comfortable and smooth cruise on a power catamaran is the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of the British Virgin Islands. Enjoy some of the British Virgin Islands’ Amazing Scuba Diving Spots while on charter.
