Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Though the earlier RANGER 29 (1971) was also designed by Mull, the RANGER 28 with it’s clear IOR influence, is a completely new design.

Some later boats (after hull #86) were delivered with a taller rig and deeper keel.(5.0’/1.52m) Tall rig: I: 37.50’ / 11.43m J: 12.00’ / 3.66m P: 32.80’ / 10.00m E: 9.80’ / 2.99m SA (100%): 385.72 ft2 / 35.83 m2

Another Ranger that has caught our eye, one in particular listed for $9000 at a local boat yard, is the Ranger 28. Gary Mull designed this boat with the first ones being produced in 1976. They had a short run, only lasting two years I believe. Gary had at least 46 designs that went to production, very impressive. He designed the Ranger 28 to be a competitive racer under IOR, yet still be comfortable to cruise with. The ads of the day, stated that just as much attention was given to the cabin as the rigging. The ad makes much about this, and from the drawings, seems so.

What makes this sailboat attractive to us is, of course the reasonable pricing in todays market, but also it seems to possess some of our other requirements to be considered for boat de jour. She fits into our size requirements of 28 – 34 feet, although just making the cut. Her LOA is listed at 28′ even and displacement is 6000 pounds giving her a D/L of 263.22, placing her in the moderate displacement category. The SA /D is 18.86, this goes to the cruiser-racer category. Our current boat, a Precision 18, is listed as having SA / D of 21.77 and a D / L of 131.87 for comparison. Her theoretical hull speed should be 6.24 knots.

The cockpit seems to be of a decent size, steering is done with a tiller, as should be, in our opinions. Nothing makes my wife happier than having a tiller in her hand and the wind in her hair. And if she’s happy, I’m happy. Power was provided with the Atomic 4 motor, which I’ve decided is just fine by me. Lots of resources for information and parts and service available readily. Down below, the interior is done in all white joinery with teak trim. While we would prefer teak on teak, the white makes the salon very bright and is probably easier to take care of. It is laid out nicely with berths for five, they seem fairly large as well. The galley is laid out cross-ways under the companion way, and although an L-shaped would be preferable, in a 28 foot sailboat, this is a better use of space I think. The way we intend to sail her I don’t think we would be doing all that much cooking underway anyways, at least not initially. The head is also laid out beam to beam, with sink on starboard and the head on port, there are no provisions for a shower. This may be a sticking point for my wife and a stinking point for me (Ha Ha). Forward berth seams to be of nominal size, with an opening hatch above. Speaking of ventilation, the side ports do not open, so this could be an issue for us as too. Oh well, fans are readily available I guess.

Over all, I think that if we should end up with one of these nicely designed sailboats in the future I think we will enjoy her very much.

ranger 28 sailboat review

One of many designs that Gary Mull made for Ranger Yachts, the Ranger 26, conceived to be the ideal compromise between a safe and comfortable on-soundings family cruiser and a competitive racer, reflects much of the art and technology that Mull blended so well in the many boats he designed during his all-too-short career. The Ranger 26 is undeniably fast: One won the 1970 IOR North American Half-Ton Cup.

The 26 is a good-looking boat with a distinctive sheer and a nice balance between freeboard and cabin height—a handsome profile wasn’t sacrificed to standing headroom—and exemplifies the construction techniques of the 1970s.

The hull is laid up by hand, and the balsa-cored deck mates to it on an inward-facing flange along the sheer line. A black-anodized aluminum toerail, fastened with bolts on 6-inch centers, completes the joint. The 1-ton iron fin keel is bolted to the hull and should be inspected periodically because the half-inch galvanized keel bolts have been known to corrode badly.

The Ranger 26 is a masthead sloop. Its deck-stepped mast is supported by upper shrouds, double lowers, a headstay, and a backstay rigged with a tensioning bridle.

At about 12 inches wide, the side decks are on the narrow side. Sailors going forward must take care when negotiating the chainplates and genoa tracks and blocks. An anchor roller wasn’t fitted as standard equipment, so anyone planning on cruising a Ranger 26 would want to consider fitting one that could perhaps also hold an anchor.

The cockpit is a little over 7 feet long and is ample for racing, cruising or socializing. The width between the seats is about right for leg bracing when heeled. Since the boat has no quarter berths, an abundance of stowage space is available under both cockpit seats.

ranger 28 sailboat review

An outboard motor provides propulsion. The transom has a cutout to accept it, but a low bulkhead just forward of the transom keeps water out of the cockpit proper and provides a convenient mounting location for the mainsheet traveler. Steering is by tiller.

The accommodation plan is conventional for this type of boat. A molded-fiberglass pan that forms the base for interior furniture includes berth fronts and platforms, and a padded vinyl headliner extends down the cabin sides. A compartment for a portable toilet and a storage closet separate the V-berth from the saloon. In the saloon, a dinette (that converts to a small double berth) is fitted on the port side, and a settee is fitted to starboard. The small galley consists of a sink to port of the companionway and a two-burner propane stove to starboard. Standing headroom is about 5 feet throughout, and sitting headroom above the seat cushions is more than 3 feet. The cabin trim is teak, and the bulkheads are teak-veneered.

Bandit , the boat I sailed for this review, races with a 130 percent genoa fitted on a Harken furler. In the 8 to 10 knots of wind that day, the boat handled well under the main alone. Once the genoa was unfurled, the boat heeled slightly before quickly accelerating to about 5 knots.

Bandit carries her 40 years lightly because she’s been well maintained. She’s a fine example of a 1970s-era racer/cruiser and is still able to show her transom to many competitors.

The Ranger 26 was built from 1969 to 1976. Depending on condition and equipment, list prices range from $3,000 to $5,800—quite a bargain for the inshore cruising opportunities that the boat offers.

Richard Smith and his wife, Beth, sail their Ericson Cruising 31, Kuma , in the Pacific Northwest. This article first appeared in the December 2013 issue of Cruising World.

This boat is sold on behalf of Sandusky Junior Sailors (SJS), a non-profit sailing program. This boat was donated to SJS. All proceeds benefit their programs. Donations to SJS, a 501(c)(3) charity, are tax-deductible within the limits of IRS rules. Purchases are typically not deductible. All boats sold "AS IS, WHERE IS." Please read entire description carefully. Information believed to be accurate but not guaranteed. We always recommend a professional survey before purchasing any watercraft. This Gary Mull design was built between 1975 and about 1978 by Ranger Yachts of Costa Mesa, CA (later Jensen Marine.) They are said to win more than their share in PHRF even today. The specs we have say she displaces 5100 and draws 4'6". This boat was actively sailed until about four years ago and has since been stored at the boat yard, with little attention since, so it needs a little cleaning up. It's available for inspection. We live close by so appointments should be fairly easy. There is a 2007 professional survey that indicated an estimated market value of $3900 at that time. That survey is available for inspection. Large sail inventory includes at least one mainsail, various jibs, and at least one spinnaker with turtle. These are older sails but said by the donor to all be usable. There are stored separately in an indoor heated space and are available for inspection by appointment only. This is an aluminum spinnaker pole. Power is 15 HP OMC Zephyr Saildrive, 1984 model 15S14M (gasoline) retrofitted circa 1984, rebuild circa 2011. The hull is single-skin (solid, no core) fiberglass with a bolt-on lead keel. It appears to be in good, sound condition. Rudder and post appear sound, operating smoothly with no perceptible play. Decks are balsa core and show significant softness in some areas. This is indicated in the survey and may have progressed from the time of the survey. There is no cradle. The jack stands belong to the yard. This boat yard quite reputable. It is gated and well-secured. Yard states that Winter storage and Spring 2017 launch has been prepaid. Yard states that buyer must schedule a launch by June 1, 2017, or arrange for Summer storage. Our relationship with this yard is of great value to us. All appointments must be scheduled through the lister. Please do not attempt to arrange access directly with the boat yard. If you wish to verify storage arrangements with the yard, please contact us first. Questions welcome. Also, we can provide additional pictures detailing areas you might have more questions about, and we'd be happy to call you if you provide a U.S. or Canada #. THANK YOU FOR CONSIDERING THIS BOAT! 1999 Ranger R83

1999 Ranger R83

Category Bass Boats

1999 Ranger R83 I bought this boat in about 2001 from the original owner and it was mint.  It was always garaged and he had two boats. So he sold this one (they went for about $28k new then. Since then Ranger has added a couple inches in width to their boats and the R series boats  is not often seen. However this is the best bass fishing boat I have ever seen (not that I am biased or anything!) I keep it covered or in my garage and professionally winterized and maintained by Jim Barry . Call him if you like and ask if he knows of any defects. It is still in mint condition. I have taken it out fishing probably 20+ times (fresh water). I love this boat and Ranger who has always been fair and helpful with me. It is so much better built than todays boats (Nitro). The trailer  is customized to fit the boat and it unloads and loads in seconds. The cover is also customized to fit the  boat (including the ladder). It is very fast due to the performance hull but I personally feel uncomfortable at high speeds on the water so I don't know the top end. I love the folding trailer tongue which allows me to get it in my garage. The new widder Ranger would not fit. The boat currently is in my garage on the trailer. If you like to fish by yourself or with a friend you could not by a better starter bass boat that is this well built and cost effective and safe. PS I tow it with my toyota 4Runner (which I will also sell after the boat is sold). Getting to old for my toys. ===================== $14,000 1999 Ranger R83 with 150 HP EFI Merc Fuel Injecter Motor. Ranger 37 - should I??

  • Add to quote

Hello, I'm new and about to make a decision on a Ranger 37, only because it's within my budget and I wonder what are the pros and cons for cruising and live-aboard. I've only ever sailed beach cats (every day for half of each year) but want to 'buy the boat and sail away'! Any advice would be most appreciated. JohnEltin

Great old race boat with decent accomodations. Very conservative by today's race standards. Won the SORC when it was new. Good looking boat. Tankage will be low for cruising. I could enjoy owning that boat. I say do it. Just sail with small lp headsails until you get comfortable with it. Don't listen to the people who will tell you that all IOR boats are monsters. They are not. If you limit your spin flying to winds under 15 knots until you get to know the boat you will be just fine. I don't consider 6' draft "deep" but I live on Puget Sound where draft is not an issue. Until you run aground. How about posting a pic of the boat?

Faster

The Ranger 28/32/37 series are, IMO, some of the nicest looking executions of the 70s IOR tumblehome hull era, Gary Mull had a nice touch with the lines. The 37 will be at its' best upwind, and as the Maestro says if you choose your sails and apparent angles wisely these types can offer a lot of boat for the money.

Eltin, John "Don't let the sun go down on [that deal]..."

Thank you all for replying. I intend to sail from the south coast of Australia to the east and north to Queensland AFTER I've gotten a bit of experience locally. I am looking for long term cruising and 'live aboard'. The boat is actually advertised as an 'S&S' for some reason! The hull is 1982 but there are some problems which are worrying me. I have contacted the man who did the last slipping (17 months ago) and he says it was 'very untidy' underneath and probably needed to be sanded back to the fibreglass. The seller says 'this is untrue' as there has been a bit of conflict between them. Hull Serial No: AUTSA008798AK3 ENGINE NO: VE198325406 - NANNI 29HP She was last surveyed Oct 2010 and even then that report has her named as an 'S&S' and advertised as such. However, the owners confided she is a Ranger 37 and they've hardly sailed her in the 3 years of ownership. So.... I may have to suffer the expense of slipping her before purchase and then decide if I want to spend the money which (I was told by the last slipmaster) could be in the region of 10 to 20 thousand dollars!! That would turn a cheap boat into an expensive one and leave me a penniless lasker! I'll try to add a photo later today. Thanks again, J

The Ranger 28/32/37 series are, IMO, What is IMO ??

In My Opinion

paulk

A couple of details in this thread make me think John and respondents are talking about two different boats. The Gary Mull Ranger 37 was first built in 1973. It seems strange that the boat John's looking at was built in 1982 - well past when it would have been a hot IOR prospect. Ranger 37's were built by Ranger, later taken over by Bangor Punta. the HIN number AUTSA008798AK3 does not look it derives from either of those names. The HIN number looks more like an Australian builder, and the broker's describing the boat as a S&S design starts to make some sense if the boat is not a Gary Mull Ranger 37. A plan drawing or some photos might clarify this, and lead to more apt advice.

Paul, you're right.. this must be a totally different 'Ranger' that what I/we were thinking. Now we need pictures.....

Still blocked! Just google John Ahern Textiles and look for 'Ranger Sail' bottom left and it will take you to the photos. Moderator says: To be able to post links or images your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 3 posts. Thanks for the response 'Faster' - I already saw those Ranger specs and it looks the same. Mine might even be a 1980 Hull. Here's what a more experienced cruising friend advised: May be a bit flimsy. Also, may date back to the 1970's I think...prone to osmosis. One item...the keel...draft seems to be between 5ft6 and 6 feet in the ones I had a look at. The keel is deep and short fore and aft, similar to our Duncanson. Such keels work well, but the draft can be a bloody nuisance...very restrictive with regards places to anchor...estuaries, idyllic coral atolls with dusky maiden beckoning, etc. Also...not Easy to go aground with..tippy.....and difficult on some slipways also. If I were to get another yacht, for cruising, and if I were not fussy about speed, only seaworthiness....then I would go for something around the same size...37 feet is fine...but with a longer cruising keel and no more than 4 ft6 draft!!!!! Much better...maybe not so good to windward, but what the hell! Seems this boat may be unsuitable for the Great Barrier Reef and Corel Seas ????. And maybe bob about too much for comfort?

Does look like the right boat. They're nice. Decent sailing qualities from what I've heard. The pictures make it look like she's in good shape w/some nice gear. The draft may make gunkholing difficult, but for the Great Barrier Reef - you're either floating or aground, no?, pretty much regardless of your draft. If the price is right...

John, I would put money on a Gary Mulls Ranger 37. Faster may be right with someone else building it but if this one is built by Ranger in Calif. I wouldn't consider it flimsy. The 1977 Ranger I owned was built extremely well in my opinion. Every time I got into a project I was impressed with the construction.

...and I'm prevented from sending the link to the actual advert but anyone interested can to google: SPARKMAN & STEPHENS 38 boat details - BoatPoint Australia

Well, from looking at the listing.. photo gallery popup with enquiry It's definitely the Mull boat, at least externally. Comparing the interior layout to the specs on sailboatdata.com there's quite a difference. Someone's confused about the S&S label, but interesting that the layout is much 'cruisier' than that shown in the specs. I think she'll be a pretty nice boat, looks cared for and well equipped. As with any 70s IOR design you're going to have to be sensible about sail selection and sailing angles, esp in a real breeze. Motivated seller by the looks of it too.

Osmosis is common on plastic boats of that era. But lots of very strong, long lasting boats were built back then. Get a survey. Hard to have confidence in the build by an unknown manufacturer (1982 is long after the end of production by Ranger in Costa Mesa). They sail very nicely.
