• The hour markers on the authentic Rolex have even and symmetrical silver borders surrounding their shapes. On the other hand, the hour markers on the Rolex replica have uneven borders around the shapes of almost every marker. • Upon comparing these two watches, it is apparent that there are a couple of visible differences in the bracelet links of each. In the authentic Rolex, the links are made of brushed metal all around the bracelet, whereas in the fake Rolex, only the outer links are brushed metal and the center links are polished, giving them a shinier appearance.
• The difference in the size and width of the bracelet links is another visible distinction between the two watches. The links on the authentic Rolex are thicker and have a more robust appearance, whereas the links on the replica are noticeably thinner and more slender. As a result, the bracelet of the counterfeit watch is narrower compared to the genuine Rolex bracelet.

Namely, this is a historical landmark for Rolex since it is the first Rolex watch to ever use a rubber strap. Most people wouldn't bat an eye at the idea of a Rolex with a rubber strap so why the fuss? This is not any typical rubber strap. Rolex has been raving about this new rubber Oysterflex bracelet which is not only very comfortable to wear, it is also hypoallergenic.

The research and development team at Rolex has engineered a bracelet that is as easy to wear as a rubber bracelet but also holds its shape like a metal bracelet. They do this by using nickel-and-titanium inserts inside the band. They also instituted a patented shape on the inside of the bracelet which has a cushioning system built-in to it which allows the bracelet to take the natural shape of a wrist making the Oysterflex possible the most comfortable rubber watch band. An Oysterlock safety clasp keeps the watch from opening and looks stunning in 18ct Everose gold. Unlike most bezels which don't operate as a component of the movement, the easy-to-use and bi-directional Ring Command bezel on the Yachtmaster II operates in conjunction with the regatta chronograph as an integral component of the movement. This bezel is the method in which you can synchronize the countdown timer to the start times of a race. Each time you press the button you can adjust the timer by one-minute increments for up to a 10-minute countdown timer. When you adjust the rotating bezel back to its default middle position, it resets the chronograph back to its main function.

This COSC certified Swiss chronometer is the self-winding caliber 4161 automatic movement beats at 28,800 vph and is completely manufactured by Rolex. This movement features the Rolex antimagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring. After receiving a COSC certified chronometer certification, the movement the goes through a thorough in-house chronometric testing once installed into a watch case. Once the watch achieves a precision of -2/+2 seconds per day in the case, it gets a Rolex Superlative Chronometer designation. Even with all these mechanical features, the 31 jewel caliber 4161 movement holds its power for 72 hours.

Looks fake. Among other things the cyclop doesn't really magnify the date window.  

F A K E There's no part of the watch posted in the OP being authentic at all.  

I, too, doubt its authenticity, but I believe the model it's trying to be is the 16622. Releases early in the run wouldn't have an engraved rehaut.

Yeah even from the poor pictures that's immediately apparent to me. I'm wearing a submariner and one glance at my watch even though completely different model and it's plain obvious the fit and finish.  

^^^ that, and the fact that one can tell from the picture that the metal is not platinum. There is a slight variation in colour tone between steel, white gold and platinum.

Is there anything about it that doesn't look wrong? How could anyone who's ever seen one think it's real?  

The refief on the bezel (not to speak of other things) is so cheaply done, that you wouldn't find one of those in a bubble gum vending machine. This is an emetic. You need a master cast and not a cast taken from a bezel which came out of a master cast. If all fakes would be of that horrible quality, then we wouldn't have much problems with such trash, and whoever buys garbage like that, does really deserve it. The  Rolex Yacht-Master  is one of the brand’s youngest collections, having been introduced only 1992. And yet, it’s already one of their most diverse, with two distinct models under the family of watches, and dozens of permutations when it comes to dial designs, bezel styles, and bracelet options.

A look into its history shows that Rolex had plans for a yacht-themed watch decades before the Yacht-Master line was launched. Today, it’s a mainstay in the Rolex catalog.

Here are important milestones in the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II history.

1958:  Rolex entered a partnership with the prestigious New York Yacht Club, a social and boating club which sponsors an annual regatta.

1966:  Rolex solidified its ties to the world of sailing when Francis Chichester – one of the world’s pioneering aviators and solo sailors – became the first person to sail around the globe while wearing a Rolex on his wrist. He sailed on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, from August 1966 to May 1967, taking him 29,600 miles around the world.

1970s:  Rolex never got around to creating a watch specifically for this category. The brand did make a prototype of the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on its dial, but they ultimately decided not to bring it to market.

1992:  Rolex finally introduced the modern Yacht-Master – the brand’s first luxury sports watch built for the open seas. 2007:  Rolex releases the Yacht-Master II, which is the world’s first watch equipped with a programmable countdown timer and a mechanical memory. The Yacht-Master II was unlike anything Rolex had launched before. Not only was it massive with its 44mm case, but it also had a bold, visually striking design that stood out among Rolex’s catalog of versatile timepieces.

2019:  Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master 42 to the collection. This is the first 42mm Yacht-Master model, offering a larger option for those who find 40mm too small. The first model came in 18k white gold, also a first for the collection, followed by an 18k gold version in 2022.

Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

The  Rolex Yacht-Master  collection is composed of two families of watches: the original Yacht-Master, and the Yacht-Master II. While these two models have the same name, they are quite different from each other.

The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as an ultra-luxurious sports watch for yachting and sailing enthusiasts. The nautical-inspired timepiece takes after the Rolex Submariner, but with greater emphasis on luxury materials and aesthetics.

The easiest way to spot a fake Rolex is by paying close attention to the movement of the seconds hand. On an authentic Rolex timepiece, the hand moves in tiny ticks which, at a cursory glance, appears smooth. The part will seemingly glide around the face of the watch .

If the seconds hand ticks along, stuttering around the face of the watch with the passage of every second, the watch claiming to be a Rolex model is a fake. If the movement is not visible to you by your naked eyes, put the watch close to your ear and listen closely. A real Rolex will have no sound, while the stuttering seconds hand in a fake Rolex will make a slight ticking sound.

Also note, most models of Rolex tick at eight movements per second; so it is not a continuous sweep.

2. Engravings of the serial and model numbers

One of the best ways to spot a Rolex watch is by its serial and case reference numbers. A Rolex timepiece has its serial number engraved on the inside of the watch where the bracelet meets the case of the watch, below six o’clock. The model number, on the other hand, is engraved above the 12 o’clock mark, accompanied by the text “ORIG ROLEX DESIGN” right above the number.

It would have been easier to distinguish a replica from a real one had all the fake ones not carried these engravings. However, a majority of the counterfeits at present have these markings in the same places. So how do we spot the fake Rolex by looking at the markings in question?

On an authentic Rolex timepiece, the serial and model numbers are deeply engraved in the metal and are clear to read. If the watch is tilted towards any light source, the engravings will shine and reveal a completely symmetrical number.

As opposed to this, the replica watches will have a stamp that appears a lot messier than the ones on the original. In many cases, the imprint will look like it was made with several tiny dots or etchings, and not just a single stamp. 3. Caseback and its engravings

Therefore, if you spot a Rolex watch with a clear caseback, you are probably looking at a fake one.

But what if the watch has a solid back? Does that authenticate a Rolex watch as an original product? Take a close look at the back of the timepiece. If there are engravings of the Rolex brand name, logo or even the reference numbers, beware — a genuine Rolex watch will not bear any marking on its back.

Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. A few of the rare, vintage Rolex models from the 1930s have clear casebacks. So does the Daytona Platinum (reference number 126506) watch, which was introduced in 2023. The brand aimed to exhibit the Caliber 4131 movement.

On a similar note, the Rolex Sea Dweller and a few of the older Lady Datejust models had engravings like “Stainless Steel” and “Registered Design” on the caseback. However, these exceptions are hard to come across, so identifying a fake Rolex by its caseback is a handy trick to have up your sleeves.

4. Details on the dial

Another important marker to distinguish a genuine Rolex model from its counterfeit is by looking at the markings on the dial. An original Rolex timepiece will have well-spaced markings and they should be aligned straight. If the spacing is uneven and the fonts are inconsistent, or if there are smudges on and around the markings, it is a fake Rolex model. Nowadays, the manufacturers of these replicas are mindful of spelling errors, so you need to look at such minute details.

The date window on the dial is a signature of the watchmaker’s design as it is found in most of its timepieces. As a matter of fact, it can also be used as an identifier for a fake Rolex watch. In a genuine model, the date will change in one sweep. If the date changes slowly, it is likely to be a counterfeit.

Talking about dates, another important design element of a Rolex watch is the Cyclops lens. The Cyclops lens is placed right over the date window, and in an original Rolex, it feels like a substantial bump. This is because the Cyclops is a miniature convex lens that magnifies the date by 2.5 times for better readability.

A simple way would be to see if the magnification is indeed 2.5 times, however, to the untrained eye it is difficult to tell. In that case, run your fingers over the Cyclops lens to feel the bump. If it appears to be flat, then you are most definitely holding a fake Rolex model in your hand.

Of course, you need to keep in mind that not every Rolex model bears a Cyclops lens. Therefore, the mere absence of a date window and the Cyclops lens is not always a viable marker for assessing the legitimacy of the watch.

5. Micro-etched crystal

In 2002, Rolex introduced a design element for its watches, this time on the crystal that protects the dial. They started micro-etching a tiny crown logo on the protective crystal at the six o’clock position. It requires a magnifying glass, and at times, even appropriate lighting conditions to see the etched logo.

The precision of the logo on the protective crystal makes it extremely difficult for counterfeit manufacturers to replicate, and many might also be ignorant of its existence. So, in case you are buying a Rolex model which was launched after 2002, do look out for this marker. 1. serial numbers.

After 2009 Rolex decided to use a string of random numbers to create its serial numbers. You can check the authenticity of a Rolex by checking its serial number. Every Rolex has a serial number on it, and you can verify the authenticity of Rolex serial numbers through the manufacturer. 

A Rolex serial number is always engraved deeply into the metal, while the fake watches have serial numbers that may be simply etched with acid. With only a few exceptions, the caseback of authentic Rolex watches are usually kept clear of engravings and special features. 3.  Self-Winding And Mechanical Movements

The cyclops glass feature at 3 o’clock is supposed to magnify the date number by 2.5x legibility. The cyclops glass always protrudes above the crystal, like a bubble—it is never flat and never fitted under the crystal. Run a finger over the watch crystal and feel the lens. You should feel a bump on the convex lens across the date. A flat Cyclops means that the Rolex watch is a fake. Another way to test it is to hold the watch sideways and look at the date without the Cyclops. If the size of the date appears the same, then it’s not a genuine Rolex watch.

A other way to identify a fake Rolex is by observing its date feature. Rolex watches have an instantaneous date display, meaning the date changes precisely at midnight, not gradually. If a Rolex replica shows an in-between date (mid roll) on the dial, it is a telltale sign of a fake since the real Rolex would change the date immediately. This characteristic might not be noticeable unless you have the watch for more than a day, but ideally, you should have already identified the counterfeit before then.

Although Rolex Submariner timepieces (along with the Sea-Dweller collection) are the only watches designed for deep-sea diving, all models like the Rolex Yacht-Master are water-resistant and perfectly sealed. Once you have the watch dip it in a cup of water for a few seconds and take it out. Before doing this, PLEASE be sure that the crown is securely tightened/screwed in. If there is any leaking of water into the watch on the dial or anything the watch is definitely a fake. All Rolex watches are 100% watertight and many counterfeit watches are not. However, it should be noted that a genuine Rolex watch that is in need of service or repairs may not be water resistant, so this is not a guaranteed way to identify a fake, and should only be done on modern Rolex watches, not vintage models or those that are visibly damaged.

The lume pip located at the 12 o’clock position on the authentic Rolex bezel is distinguished by a silver lining around it and fits seamlessly within the confines of the triangle marker surrounding it. Conversely, the lume pip on the counterfeit Rolex’s bezel has a larger, thicker border that extends outside the triangle marker’s boundary. Additionally, it lacks lume material, rendering it unable to glow in the dark like the authentic Rolex bezel’s pip.

Knowing how to spot a fake Rolex prevents you from being scammed. Skip the pawn shop and second hand stores and always buy from an official Rolex dealer to guarantee that the products being sold are legitimate, even on pre owned Rolex watches. If the price is too good to be true, that tells you the watch is not the real deal. Rolex timepieces, after all, is made with high-quality materials and craftsmanship like no other, which explains its hefty price tag.

In other words, the best way to figure out how to tell an authentic Rolex from a fake one is to consult a seller that you know to be trustworthy. This seller probably deals in authentic Rolexes and can help guide you on where to buy authentic Rolex watches if you can’t find what you need with that individual. The seller can also examine any Rolex watch you bring in to check for signs of a fake. Furthermore, once the watch’s countdown is launched, it can be synchronized on the fly to match the official countdown via the ‘fly-back’ reset function of the seconds hand and adjustment of the countdown minute hand to the nearest minute.

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

The countdown’s sophisticated functions were designed to be easily set and operated. The preliminary programming of up to 10 minutes is accessed, and then locked, via the rotatable bezel thanks to Ring Command, a patented system of interaction between the bezel, the winding crown and the movement, developed by Rolex. A technical feat made possible by the brand’s in-house mastery of the entire watch design and manufacturing process, from the case to the movement.

2. A Distinctive Aesthetic 

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch. A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand.

Buyer beware: fake watches are getting better every year. And they’re getting more prolific—a quick Google search will bring up hundreds of internet retailers hawking their replica goods.

But let us be clear—we don’t say that as a good thing. While the producers of fake watches are getting more skilled in copying the look of a luxury watch, they still fall well short in terms of actual quality. And to illustrate just that, we had our watchmakers open up some fake watches and compare them to their real counterparts. What they found? While at first glance, a fake watch passes pretty well, the devil is really in the details.

First up? A Rolex GMT-Master II ref. 116710.

The First Glance

The first step is checking the dial and markers, two of the most major aesthetic aspects of the watch. Then comes the case—lower-quality steel is evident on the fake. How do you tell? It’d be more difficult to discern without a real watch to compare against, but it’s all in the feel. And, the polishing and lines of the case actually make more of a difference than you’d think. Rolex watches have a distinct line and polish that’s difficult to mass-produce, so be on the look-out for sharper corners and duller finishing.

Likewise, the rotating bezel is a distinct feature on a GMT-Master, one that Rolex invented and perfected. If you encounter more resistance when you try to work the bezel, chances are that it’s not an authentic Rolex click-system.

The Insides

The particular fake watch we got our hands on did have an authentic Swiss movement in it (but obviously not the correct one for the GMT-Master II), but generally, the movement inside a fake watch will be a dead giveaway. That means it will most likely be a Chinese-manufactured replica or an authentic Swiss-manufactured movement that’s not supposed to be there. Either way, if it’s not a genuine Rolex movement , it’s a no-go.

So what’s the lesson? When it comes to fake watches, sometimes its really hard to tell. Sure, there are some very obvious mistakes, like the wrong placement of the Rolex serial number or the incorrect stack of the hands. But sometimes you come across a really skilled replica manufacturer that can fool even the biggest watch nerd. That’s why you trust the experts to tell you for sure.

The first time that I went to China, right after leaving one of my friends told me:

“Don’t come back to Italy without checking out at least one of the fake markets in Beijing.”

Fake market? What did that mean?

I never heard of them, and didn’t know of the existence of this parallel world until one day, at the end of my lessons at the Beijing Language and Culture University , with one of my colleagues I headed toward one of the most famous fake markets in Beijing, the Silk Market (秀水街, Xiushui Jie, in Chinese), in the Chaoyang district .

It was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my first trip to China. After weeks of frustration in university, finally a little shopping and entertainment.

The Silk Street Market is an actual building of fakes, each floor with specific products, from shoes to clothing, to electronics and toys, to perfume to accessories for the home. A shopping mall from which it is impossible to leave without making at least one purchase among the thousands of articles offered.

Once inside, you’ll be fascinated and even a little perplexed since you’ll ask yourself how all this is possible. But right afterwards you too won’t be able to help but wander around in search of “bargains”.

In the Chinese fake market you can find everything, but here are a few rules to avoid coming home to find out you’ve been “ripped off”.

First rule: prices and the art of haggling

The first rule of these markets is: HAGGLE; the Chinese love to haggle, and once inside, you’ll find that all the linguistic difficulties you had just days before, magically disappear.

As an expert in the art of haggling, the merchants of various stores will try at the outset to offer prices that although seemingly reasonable to the eyes of a Westerner, can actually be bargained down since the first price is usually five to ten times more than the final one.

Here are some basic fundamentals for bargaining at fake markets:

• Smile, keep calm, and don’t feel guilty about wanting to haggle. Here, if you don’t haggle you’re considered an idiot;
• If you already know the type of product you want to buy, get an idea of the actual price on Taobao before going to the market, so that you’ll have a base price;
• As was already said, the initial price offered by the vendors in the fake markets are – usually, – five or ten times more than the “final” price. So if the initial price is 100 Yuan, you respond with 10. If the vendor tells you to take a hike (it can happen if you offer a price that too low even for them), try with another (there are usually many vendors selling the same product) and begin from 20. The vendor will offer 90, you 21, etc;
• Halfway through the transaction, pretend to walk away. If the vendor hasn’t yet reached their final price (or the price beyond which they’re not inclined to go so as not to take a loss) they’ll try to keep you from going;
• Bargain with other vendors to find out what is the lowest price they’re willing to go (as I already said, there are many stands that offer the same product);
• Tell them that they can’t cheat you because you live in China and know the prices;
• At the end of the day, if you’re a Westerner, in many cases you won’t get the best possible price since many merchants would rather lose a sale than have their final price become known to tourists. The only way to “resolve” this problem, if price is important to you, is to get your Chinese friend to go in your place. However this will make you miss out on all the fun!

Second rule: pay attention to the quality

Inside the market you’ll find differing qualities for every product; although they’re all imitations, often the first product that they’ll offer you will be of low quality and/or defective (such as a shirt with markings or holes).

Third rule: always pay using the local currency

Always pay using Chinese Yuan. Even though all types of currencies are accepted in this type of market, the prices offered in Yuan will always be better than in Euros or Dollars; so I recommend that you only use Yuan.

Another bit of advice is to avoid using credit cards since quite often, especially in the past, many have found that their card has been cloned.

Fourth rule: don’t follow vendors to an isolated place

At times vendors will say something like:

“I don’t have this in that color here (or this size, etc), follow me for a second and I’ll get it for you.”

Even though it is possible that the request is genuine, it is also possible that following the vendor into his store you’ll find yourself in front of two hooligans that will relieve you of your wallet.

China, in general, is not at all a dangerous place, but the rules of common sense still apply!

Where to find fake markets in Beijing?

Fake markets aren’t present in all of China, because being an exclusively tourist attraction they are concentrated especially in the cities of Beijing and Shanghai.

As far as Beijing goes, the most visited one with the widest variety of products is the Silk Street Market (秀水街, Xiushui Jie) located at 8 Xiushui East Street, in the Chaoyang district.

To get there, take Line 1 of the metro to the Yonganli stop and follow the signs for the Silk Market (exit A).

This is the third tourist attraction in Beijing and was opened at the beginning of the Eighties and today is host to more than a thousand vendors inside.

After the conversion of the Ya Show of San Li Tun to the fake market shopping center, the second most famous fake market in Beijing is probably the Pearl Market (红桥市场, Hongqiao Shichang), located at 46 Tiantan East Street.

To get there, take Line 5 of the metro to the Tiantan Dongmen stop and take exit B.

This market is visited by more than a million tourists a year. Unlike the other merchants, this one also specializes in the sale of pearls: pearl merchants are found on the third, fourth and fifth floor of the building.

Besides clothing, shoes, electronics, watches and silk, at this market you can also buy food, especially fish, from frutti di mare to the most valuable ones.

Where to find fake markets in Shanghai?

In Shanghai the situation is more or less the same: the same products, same quality, almost the same prices (in my opinion the prices are a little higher in Shanghai).

Just as in Beijing, a tourist in Shanghai should include on their list of attractions to see at least one of the large markets in Shanghai .

The first is the Pudong Market (浦东亚太新阳市场 , Pudong Yatai Xinyang), located at 2002 Shiji Dadao, in the Pudong Xin district.

To get there take Line 2 of the metro to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum stop. The market is located inside the station itself.

If you want to go by taxi, the easiest thing to do is have the driver leave you in the square alongside the entrance of the metro, asking in fact to be dropped off at the Shanghai Science and Tecnology Museum station (in Chinese: 科技馆地铁站, Kejiguan Ditie Zhan).

The second market I’d recommend is the Fenshine Market (风向市场, Fengxiang Shichang) at 580 Nanjing West Road [ Update : At the moment this market is close], at the intersection with Chengdu Road. This market is more centrally located than the first and can be reached by foot in about fifteen minutes from the Nanjing West Road metro stop (line 2), or on foot for fifteen minutes from the stop at People’s Square, exit 11 (line 1, 2 and 8).

Here you might find vendors who will ask you to go to the “higher floors of the building”: don’t worry! That’s where you’ll find the best quality merchandise, the kind most appealing to we Westerners.

Regardless of which market you decide to visit depending on budget and availability, in my opinion this is one of the experiences you have to do at least once in your life: first of all you’ll have a good time, whether in the end you decide to buy a bag or just a magnet; after which you can also discover a different world, a different China that isn’t possible to find in any other place.

And trust me, once you enter, you surely won’t be disappointed.

You can buy electronics as well, but personally I prefer to do so in Hong Kong instead. There’s no import taxes and you can buy genuine products at a lower price.

Shirts can cost everything between 120 RMB – 500 RMB, from my experience. If you go to a decent tailor at Nan Pu Da Qiao in Shanghai, for example, you shouldn’t pay more than 200 RMB for a cotton shirt of normal quality.

Some other places you should check out are the Taihua market(泰华) and Xinzhongxin（新中心). Here, you’ll find much clothes, shoes, handbags, and more. It’s similar to the Silk market in Beijing.

Best expierence was to go to so called “Hidden fake markets”.

Those shops that are usually near to the big fake markets . They are not marked as shops from outside. Inside you can find a lot different fake stuff – normally with a lot better quality then the stuff from Silk Market or Pearl Market. Normally the prices are fix – you can not bargain. But the prices are realistic – no stupid fake prices like the prices from Silk Market or Pearl Market.

Where you can find the hidden shops is a secret. I found nothing about that in the internet but most of the Airline Crew Members know about these shops. Everytime I was in one of those shops I saw some Airline crew members shopping there too.

580 closed a couple years back and will never re-open. And 360 market up near the railway station (which was not mentioned above) also kicked the knock-off vendors out of its basement floor. Those from 580 and 360 moved into Science & Tech around 2017. 360 does still have quite a few vendors in its upper floors for electronics, eyeglasses, etc. So Science & Tech is basically the main source in Shanghai now. One last location…South Bund Fabric Market….quite a few tailors (it’s where I have my dress shirts and cashmere coats made) and no shortage of knock-off clothing.

Connor Zilisch on the NASCAR vs. F1 path, his very real Rolex and time spent in Europe: 12 Questions

Each week, The Athletic asks the same 12 questions to a different race car driver. Up next: 17-year-old racing prodigy Connor Zilisch, who has already won the Rolex 24 at Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring this year and recently made his NASCAR national series debut at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, where he won the pole for the Truck Series race and finished fourth. 1. What is currently the No. 1 thing on your bucket list?

Probably to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans — and I want to do it soon, too. Because I won Daytona, I won Sebring (the other two races in the triple crown of endurance racing). To win Le Mans and to win those three endurance races would be really cool.

Do you feel pressure to do that before you sign some full-time NASCAR deal and then you have to do NASCAR every year during Le Mans?

Yeah, partially. … This year is kind of my open year to go do what I’ll enjoy and what would look good on my resume. So there is pressure to do it soon before things start to get really busy on this side of the world.

2. How much media coverage of NASCAR do you consume?

I probably spend way too much time on Twitter, first of all. But I enjoy learning about NASCAR and everything about it, because I didn’t really grow up around the sport. I was always a road racing guy and grew up watching F1 and IMSA. So I need to learn it at a quicker pace than a lot of guys in this garage.

3. Beyond winning, what is the best way to measure success in racing?

Being a likable person. In the garage, it’s such a small community. Being friends with everyone is really important, and that can get you almost as far as maybe talent can. It’s being someone you know guys want to come up to and say, “Hey” every time they see them and being well-liked. It’s like Rajah (Caruth) when he won at Vegas , everybody was so pumped for him. That’s the kind of guy I want to be; I want to be friends with everyone.

So how do you manage that with other drivers? I see you and Jesse Love go back and forth and like you said, right now, it’s all good. But if you’re competing in the same series Sunday for wins and you run into each other, how do you foresee that going?

As an example, I’ve grown up around Brent Crews and we’ve been racing against each other since we were seven or eight years old. I’ve always told him and our parents, “Look, things may happen on the racetrack. But that’s not a good representation of who we are and the people we are. What happens on the track is way different than what happens off the track.”

That’s something I’ve learned to live by in the racing world. Yeah, you have to be the bigger person to be able to accept those things sometimes. But it’s what’s needed when we’re going to be around each other for the rest of our lives in racing. You don’t want to hate someone when you’re racing against them every week.

4. What is an opinion you have about NASCAR that you do not think is shared by the fans?

Probably the love for road racing. A lot of the fans don’t see it the same way I may see it. It is well-liked throughout the garage and the guys enjoy it. The guys who don’t enjoy it are the ones who maybe aren’t quite as good at it. But the diversity and being able to race in different scenarios is what makes a really good race car driver.

5. What is the biggest thing fans don’t realize about what you do for a living?

The amount of stuff that goes on behind the scenes — even for me, and I’m not even a Cup guy yet. From the outside, it may look like a one-day job, right? You show up to the track on Saturday, you race on Sunday, you get out of there and you go back to your family for the week. But there’s a lot of responsibilities drivers have that people don’t see. And even the crew guys — these guys are away from their families 38 weekends a year, and they’re at the shop every day. It’s a straining lifestyle, and it’s definitely not easy on relationships and the people around you, but it’s what’s needed to be successful.

6. This question is related to a current topic involving yourself, and I’m changing it up for each person. You told a story about when you won the Rolex and you going to get it fitted and when you walked into the store, the employees thought it was fake and you were a kid who had been duped. Can you tell us more about that?

When you win a Rolex at the 24 Hours of Daytona, it comes in what’s called a “TV box.” So it’s a big box and generally, they don’t give those to people who buy a Rolex at a Rolex store or a dealer. So usually, they see those with fakes. Before I even opened the box, I could tell they were judging me and looking at me funny. And I kind of expected it, right? A 17-year-old walking in with a Rolex isn’t really what they see every day. But I knew what I had, so I was walking in with confidence.

Still, those guys probably see some crazy things working at a high-end jewelry store, so they were skeptical and questioned me before I opened it. And then I opened the box and I guess it was a bit of a shock when I showed him the backside of it and gave them the backstory to it.

But that was a funny experience and one I won’t forget. It was a surreal experience to win that race at 17 years old.

And now Sebring on top of that, too? Your head must just be spinning.

Sebring was almost cooler. It wasn’t as emotional and it wasn’t as surreal of a moment. But I got to finish the race at Sebring, so I felt like I was a bigger piece of the puzzle at that race. At Daytona, Christian Rasmussen finished the race, and then he wasn’t with us at Sebring; he’s an IndyCar driver, so he couldn’t make it. So it was cool to finish the race and feel like I really earned it racing against guys who have raced IndyCar and F1 .

7. This is a wild-card question. You recently spoke about the kart race you won in Italy against 163 other drivers while living in Europe. I’m imagining if I won that and I’m in Europe, I’m on the F1 path. Was there any disappointment that wasn’t the path you ultimately ended up on? Not that you’re upset to end up here in NASCAR, but I’m sure some of the people you were in that race with are probably going F1 someday. How do you wrap your head around, “I was good enough to beat them, but I don’t have the resources to actually make that the path?”

It’s funny, because Kimi Antonelli, he’s a big name over there right now ( The Athletic ’s Luke Smith recently wrote about how Antonelli is under consideration to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes). And he finished probably 20th in that race. I went back and looked at the results of that race a few months ago and just looked through the names, and it’s crazy how many of those kids I beat are on the way to F1.

I wouldn’t really say it’s disappointment; it’s maybe a little bit of regret for not chasing it harder. I just lost hope. I was like, “There’s no way I’m gonna make F1.” You need billions of dollars and it just almost isn’t even possible. But if I was over there right now, with the hype around F1 in America, I probably would have a different mindset about it. Five years ago, F1 in America wasn’t really a thing. When “Drive to Survive” and all that came about, that really changed the view on F1. So I might have changed my mindset a little bit today.

But honestly, I’m happy with where I’m at and with the dream I’m chasing. I get to live in America and be with my family. It feels like home. It’s still really cool to be chasing a professional racing career.

8. What do you like about where you grew up?

I grew up in south Charlotte. I like the small-town feel and still being close enough to have good restaurants and a good place to go on the weekend. I had a really good school and a really good group of friends. … It’s been great, and especially since I moved to Mooresville (north of Charlotte), everywhere I go, I run into someone I know. That’s the small-town feel I enjoy.

9. What personality trait are you the most proud of?

I like how outgoing I am. I wouldn’t say I was born with it, but I have some natural ability to go up to anybody and not be afraid. A lot of that came from the time I spent in Europe. That was some of the most uncomfortable times of my life, ever. You go to this place, you don’t speak the same language at 11 or 12 years old, without my parents (Zilisch’s parents had to stay back and work, so he lived with his karting mechanic/driver coach in Europe, who also supervised him). Even relating it to racing, I like to put myself in uncomfortable positions — and that was definitely an uncomfortable position. That helped me grow a lot as a person.

You’re 11 years old and you’re across the world from your parents. I’m sure that was just an unbelievable time in your life.

He was basically my second dad, and on some days, he wouldn’t even want to go to dinner with me. So he’d put me on a bicycle and send me into this town (in Italy) on my own. I had a credit card and I would just kind of find my way. In the moment, it was maybe not so cool, but looking back on it, it was damn cool. Those are times I’ll remember forever.

10. Which driver would you least like to be stuck with on an elevator?

Honestly, I want to say (close friend) Jesse Love. We would just get into a fight or something because we know each other so well. We’d start blaming each other and it probably wouldn’t go over well. I don’t really know many of these guys too well, so with a lot of people, it wouldn’t be too frightening of a situation. But with Jesse, we’d probably end up in a fight. (Laughs)

11. What is a run-in you’ve had with a driver that TV or the media missed?

We had a CARS Tour race last year, a Pro Late Model race. And I was super slow; for some reason, we missed it (on the setup). Cole Butcher was trying to pass me and, I mean, I was a moving chicane. He spun me out getting by me and I came up to him after the race.

I’m not gonna go up to someone and try and fight them, right? I’m more of like, “I’ll kill you with kindness.” So I went up to him, and I was trying to start a conversation. His crew chief walked over and they all think I’m getting ready to fight him. And I just start giving him the most honest explanation ever. I’m like, “Man, what was your reasoning for that?” I think he was shocked by it, because he was expecting me to start yelling at him and he was gonna start yelling back, but he honestly was lost for words. I would have liked to have a video of it, because it was honestly pretty funny, his reaction when I started talking to him in a super soft voice.

12. Each week, I ask a driver to give me a question for the next interview. The last one was with Justin Haley. He says, “All of us jumped around to a bunch of different series when coming through the ranks, and I loved TA2 racing when I was younger. What’s been your favorite series so far?”

The Mazda MX5 Cup. The racing is so incredible. In a lot of (other) races I do, whether it’s a 45-minute race or a 12-hour race or a 24-hour race, you always have a time in the race where you’re not really doing anything. You’re just doing practice laps. But in that series, there is never a corner where you don’t go into the corner staring at your mirrors, wondering if there’s someone next to you. It’s 45 minutes of pure chaos. The races are always so incredible. They always come down to the last corner, and you can’t pull away. It’s made me a way better driver, and I feel super aware of all my surroundings, especially because of that series.
