Description

The Topaz 14 was originally designed by Yves Loday and Rob White. Loday and White represent an international multi-hull team of the very highest calibre, so it is no surprise that they have produced another wonderful new catamaran together. This vessel can handle any conditions. Tested in a demanding resort company environment by Sunsail, the Topaz 14 just keeps coming back for more punishment. The lightweight TRILAM hulls are easy to handle ashore and require virtually no maintenance.

The unique hull shape makes light work of big waves. The hulls incorporate skegs rather than daggerboards and an auto-lift rudder system so setting off and returning to shore is simple and stress free.

The Topaz 14 catamaran enables beginners to learn to sail a catamaran at a much earlier age and is therefore an ideal choice for recreational sailors, sailing schools, resorts and rental operations. It’s fast and fun yet exceptionally stable and forgiving. The controls, from raising the mainsail and jib to handling the mainsheet loads are geared so that even young or lighter crew can handle them comfortably.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

The 14 XTREME is a sublime creation suited to a wide range of crew weights.

The Topaz cats are all roto-moulded in tri-laminated Metalicene polyethylene producing the stiffest, lightest and most dynamic hulls available. The hulls are also extremely robust and low maintenance making them ideal for even the toughest sailing school environments.

Catamaran Topaz 14

Information, characteristics, spare parts, rigging instructions.

The Cat 14 offers a great performance. It is light and agile, with a great and docile response to rudder movements.

The mainsail can be reefed and it has a furling jib. The boat is controllable and easy to handle at all times. Single and double trapeze options are available.

Catamarans sail fast because their hulls have a small contact surface to the water. The area and the wide platform give the crew more influence than in regular dinghy. The platform provides a high power-to-weight ratio, but the hulls must be lightweight and rigid. Cat-14 floats are light, stiff and more dynamic than any other rotomolded catamaran with a tense and responsive response. It is very resistant, so the maintenance is really affordable.

The “pedigree” of the Olympic champion pair Loday / White is clearly evident in the design. Performance is bright, but it is easily controlled and well thought out with a lot of smart features.

Many sailors of light sailing believe that the weakness of a catamaran is their inability to turn. Tanks to the Loday/White design, these preconceptions can be forgotten. They Loday/White design team has moved the skegs, as if they were small keels, to the right, under the mainsail, where they act as central boards and allow the catamaran to turn perfectly, which makes it a pleasure to pass from float to float.

The trampoline is full of space for the rudder and the crew to move. And when they want to go out on the trapeze, it is easy to get hooked and get away thanks to the exclusive non-slip surface of the Topper catamarans. The Topaz 14 also comes with a fully adjustable rudder system with a small, clean, simple and fail-safe lever to block each blade. And the blades are sensitively moulded by injection in plastic, so they are very resistant and durable. All pre-stretched fittings and sheets are the kind of kit that can be normally found only in the expensive high-end racing catamaran.

Safety features include a fully sealed mast and header float to ensure that if the cat-14 is overturned, it will float sideways instead of inverting. Thanks to the straightening ropes and the weight placed aft on the hull means the catamaran can be straightened effortlessly even for a very light crew.

The cat-14 is robust, lightweight and rigid, with a total modern design that offers a sensational navigation. The construction of the durable and robust hull and the highest range of equipment that comes standard allow the Cat-14 to be the leading catamaran in its segment.

Catamaran 14

Topaz 14 catamaran.

The  Topaz 14   has been designed by two of the most legendary Olympic CAT sailors ever. Any Catamaran that Yves Loday and Rob White have been involved with is going to be seriously FAST. And the Topaz 14 certainly will not disappoint on this score. But it is it’s accessibility and ease of control that is the real genius of this affordable cat. It is a great way for anybody even including lightweight or relatively inexperienced sailors to sail at very high speeds whilst remaining totally in control. 

The Topaz 14  enables beginners to learn to sail a catamaran at a much earlier age and is therefore an ideal choice for sailing schools and holiday companies,  Sunsail has 14 at their prestigious centre in Phokaia, Turkey from 2008.

Fast and fun yet exceptionally stable and forgiving.  The controls, from raising the mainsail and jib to handling the mainsheet loads are geared so that even young or lighter crew can handle them comfortably in up to a force 4-5

The rig, whilst providing ample power, has been developed so that it contains a high level of control even for novice crews.  In high winds, mainsail reefing comes as standard and a furling jib system can be fitted as an optional extra.  Then there is the ultimate upgrade for a turbo-powered ride you can add a fantastic 10m2 gennaker.
