Centurion 32

The centurion 32 is a 32.74ft masthead sloop designed by kim holman and built in fiberglass by wauquiez, henri (chantier) between 1968 and 1977., 380 units have been built., it accomodates 6 people in 1 cabins plus salon..

The Centurion 32 is a heavy sailboat which is slightly under powered. It is very stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a very short water supply range.

Request for information on the Centurion 32 Just bought a 1973 Centurion 32. If anyone has information of any kind in regard to building specs, experience etc, or any web sites where I can obtain such info please send info

Well-known member

Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will send you a one page second hand review in French. John

Congratulations, you've made an excellent purchase. There are at least two other Centurion 32 owners contributing to this board, namely Aeolus and myself. If you have any specific questions I'll do my best to answer them. Some useful information can be found at: http://users.swing.be/FDB/centurion/

Aeolus_IV

May I echo Bedouins congratulations - you have (in my opinion) made an excellent choice /forums/images/icons/smile.gif. I'm sure that between us we can answer many of your questions - the web site Bedouin has pointed you to contains (as you've probably found out by now) pretty much everything that is generally known about the boat (in french). There is a chap on this web site (N Merlot, also french) who used to build these boats in the Wauquiez factory, and is happy to answer the odd emailed questions - though it can take him some time to come back to you (he's a busy man). I'm sure you'll find your new boat everything you want - she is a fast, safe, well mannered boat - and pretty too. Regards, Jeff.

Thanks a lot for your reply ! My full name is Sven Janssen, and I live in Norway. My e-mail is: [email protected]

Re: Wauiquiez How do you pronounce this correctly? Whacky ez? Vow keeze? Fau ki ez?

Re: Wauiquiez I think it is "Wackieth"

Hi Sven, Great choice of yacht. I have had my Wauquiez Centurion 32 for about 9 years. Her 'proper yacht' Holman and Pye design and attracive lines regularly attract attention wherever we sail. Sailing performance and general construction are superb. I have quite a lot of original literature from Wauquiez with line drawings etc. If you want any of this Email me. Interestingly, the yacht 'Bedouin' (a contributor to this forum) was, I think, the reason why I bought my Centurion. I used to look with envy at her when she was based on the River Crouch. Years later I searched for a similar Centurion. Since owning her a friend was so impressed with my Centurion that he went to France and found one for himself. Perhaps we should start a Centurion 32 owners association? Good sailing. David

Re: Wauiquiez Vawk ee ez (NB one "i" too many in the title -> Wauquiez) John

Re: Wauiquiez Merci.

Kurrawong_Kid

SWMBO and I have also owned a Centurion 32 for 11 years. We have sailed her to Southern Ireland, South Brittany, NE France, Belgium, the Netherlands and had a brief foray to the Baltic in 2001. She has made a really comfortable cruising boat for 2 and we have often cruised 4 up, but that does require more discipline. Good points-solidly and well built; very well balanced; easy access forward; nice deep cockpit; roomy saloon; splendid chart table. So-so points-forepeak headroom; footwell to galley; heads headroom. Bad point-access to water pump and fine filter on Volvo MD2B. Hairy feature-trying to reverse out of a dead end in a marina! We are just about to change the engine, the old one is just about life expired. I don't know if there are enough of us for a users' association, but we could easily set up a Yahoo Group as a first step.

Find it hard to believe so many popping up - and there was I thinking that Bedouin and I were it. On the pronounciation side, there was an add for the latest Wauquiez Centurion in YW a few months ago, and I'm sure they added the phonetics (for us ignorant lot): "Vo Key ay", if I remember rightly the "z" is silent. Regards, Jeff.

There were actually 380 Centurions built over a ten year period, making it Wauquiez' most successful model, and as popular as most models of the same era. Even so it is surprising to find so many owners (some of long standing) in this group. I think in the 3.5 years I've owned Bedouin, i've seen 5 other Centurion 32s, two under sail and three moored

As you say - 380 - makes it by most makers standards a very successful run, 1968 - '77. So I find it strange that not just this model, but even Wauquiez themselves seem relatively unknown these days. Even more so as their factory is only across the channel in northern France (from me at least). I guess now that the Centurion 45s is beating a fast path round the european racing circuit that awareness of Wauquiez and their past and present boats will improve. It would be nice to meet other owners from time to time, bask in the reflected glory of having picked such a fine yacht /forums/images/icons/smile.gif. As for bringing together something like an owners group, this sounds like a good idea, but with numbers so low it would have to be fairly informal ... what does everyone else think? Jeff.

I had a look round the Centurion 45, and I am looking forward to seeing the 40 (should be at Southampton). The trouble is it now looks like what it is - a slightly posh Beneteau. The quality is nothing like the older Wauquiez boats.

 • 10 Jul 2003

This is probably true - it is probably proportionally cheaper (allowing for inflation) than many of the earlier Wauquiez - even our old 32's. However, I liked the clean lines and an AVS which seemed very high for a modern boat. I wouldn't say no if I was offered one.

New owner too Hi. As a new owner I would be interested to know whether an owners club or a Yahoo group ever got up and running? Its nice to be in such a small select group of owners. Jaba

Centurion 32

 • July 9, 2009

This elegant Holman & Pye design from 1969 is now one of the more sought-after cruiser-racers of the period. Her heavy construction and excellent fi nish mean she has lasted well and her good manners, combined with sprightly windward performance, make her a rewarding fast cruiser for both experienced and novice sailors. Built by Henri Wauquiez in France, she has six berths in two cabins in a typical layout of the times – heads amidships, two berths forward, three in the saloon and a quarterberth. Galley and chart table are both acceptable, and she has a lead fin keel. She had two masthead rig options, although the smaller of them was the more popular.

LOA 9.75m (32ft), LWL 7.32m (24ft), beam 3.00m (9ft 10in), draught 1.78m (5ft 10in), Displacement 4,800kg (10,500lb). Price guard: £15,000 to £22,000.

32'' wauquiez centurion (1973)

 • Add to quote

32'''' wauquiez centurion (1973) IF ANYONE READING THIS HAS INFO REGARDING THIS CRAFT, I WOULD APPRECIATE A MOMENT OF YOUR TIME TO ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS. REPLIES TO THIS MSG. BOARD OR E-MAIL ME AT, [email protected] THANK YOU, BILL DAVIS

32'''' wauquiez centurion (1973) The 32'' Wauquiez Centurion is generaly considered to be a pretty well built boat taht sails fairly well for the era in which they were built. I did not think they were made as early as 1972 (but I could be wrong here. My recollection was that the Centurian was a 1980''s vintage boat.) I can''t remember being below on one but I have seen them out sailing. My sense is that they are not very good light air boats and probably are not to great in higher winds as well but really excel in the 8-15 knot breezes that is favored by many of us coastal sailors. Of course a 1970''s vintage boat is beginning to get long in the tooth. You definately should go for a thorough survey. Items of particular importance: Depending on useage and sailing venue- Both standing and running rigging are approaching the end of their useful lifespan, original and perhaps even a second suit of sails are near the end of their lives as well, engines are close to needing a overhaul, rebuild or worse. Decks and hulls should be checked for delamination and bulkhead tabbing should be carefully checked. Also important are shroud and stay attachement points, keel bolts and rudder posts and cores. Boats of this era (if it really is from the early 1970''s) had very primative hardware and undersized winches by modern standards. If the gear has not been upgraded then it should be carefully checked during the sail trial with the adequacy for purpose being factored into your plans for the boat. Good luck Gotta Go! Jeff

32'''' wauquiez centurion (1973) THANK YOU JEFF FOR TAKING THE TIME TO RESPOND.ACCORDING TO INFO OFF THE MFG. WEBSITE, THAT MODEL WAS IN PRODUCTION FROM 1968 THRU 1977, WITH 380 UNITS BUILT. MY PROBLEM IS THAT THEY ARE NOT BUT A FEW ON THIS SIDE OF THE "POND". THANKS AGAIN

32'''' wauquiez centurion (1973) I don''t know anything about this boat (and I won''t pretend that I do) but I noticed on the SailNet email lists there is a "Centurion" discussion group and a "Wauquiez" discussion group. I would guess one of these is the right group and you may be able to get some info from people that actually own one of these boats instead of a few of us just speculating (I don''t think you are looking for speculation). I found that the Morgan email group was very helpful when I owned my Morgan Out Island 33. I was able to get advise from actual owners who had previously addressed problems I was having. Good luck. Rob ~~~~_/)~~~~

The Wauquiez Centurion 32 is a fabulous boat. I found one in San Francisco, and sailed her down the coast to San Diego. Alouette is hull #122, built in 1972, and is extremely seaworthy. We experienced 25-35mph winds and 10-15 foot swells. Alouette handled the trip like a champ. The craftsmanship of the interior is wonderful, and it's a very solid boat. I was unfamiliar with the brand and the boat, but after this trip, I think my boat could handle anything. If you can find one, buy it!

centurian 32 i have owned a 73 centurian 32 for 5 years, she has had new rigging ,winches, and a new engine this year, the interiour is original and in excellent condition, she is a solid boat , and yes she likes wind, lots of it, and is very fast in the right conditions, when other boats are giving up, she sails on the west coast of scotland, may till nov, she will still be arround when modern yachts are crazed piles of grp, only drawback is the interiour lining which makes re wireing difficult, but if you want a yacht to go anywhere this is a good one.

Well found well built racer cruiser from 1973. Owner has two boats, selling this one before end of November 2023 to first buyer with $6500 cash (firm). Further details provided to serious buyers. If not sold, boat will be removed from listing.

Equipment: Universal M25XP fresh water cooled.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

 • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
 • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
 • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
 • LOA: Length overall in feet
 • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
