Imagine the gentle sway of waves, the endless horizon of the sea, and the allure of waking up to a different view every morning. This isn’t a holiday brochure; it’s the possibility of your new life on a yacht. It’s a dream for many, but what does it truly entail? In this exploration, we delve into the reality of yacht living. It’s not all sunsets and sea breezes. Like any home, a yacht has its charms and challenges.

For those in their prime years, considering a shift from a traditional home to a yacht is more than just a change of address. It’s a lifestyle overhaul. We’re not just talking about a snug living space or the need to be a Jack-of-all-trades at sea. It’s about embracing a unique blend of freedom and responsibility.

Living the Yacht Lifestyle

Our journey through this blog post is not just about painting a rosy picture. It’s about providing a realistic lens through which you can view this significant life decision. We’ll explore how this choice fits into your life puzzle, whether you’re an adventurous soul seeking the thrill of the open seas or a contemplative mind looking for serenity away from the land’s hustle.

As you read through, remember, every big decision comes with its highs and lows–like the tides. Yacht living is no exception. So, let’s set sail on this exploratory voyage to uncover what lies beneath the surface of living on a yacht.

The Allure of Yacht Living

The concept of yacht living taps into a deep-seated desire for freedom, an intimate connection with nature, and a sense of belonging within a unique community. Living on a boat isn’t just about the physical space you inhabit; it’s about the lifestyle and experiences that come with it. From the flexibility to cruise to new locations on a whim to the close-knit marina communities, yacht life offers a distinct way of living that is both challenging and rewarding. The

The Freedom and Flexibility of Location of Luxury Yacht Living

One of the most enticing aspects of living aboard a yacht is the sheer freedom it offers. Imagine having the ability to change your scenery whenever you wish. Whether it’s anchoring in a secluded bay or docking at a vibrant marina, your home is as mobile as you desire. This flexibility allows for a life unbound by the traditional constraints of geographical location.

Sailing from one destination to another, you’re not just moving your home; you’re embracing a lifestyle that allows for spontaneous adventures and experiences. The freedom to explore coastal towns, hidden coves, and open seas is unparalleled. This nomadic way of life provides a sense of liberation and adventure that is hard to find in traditional living arrangements.

Proximity to Nature and Unique Living Experiences

Living on a yacht brings you closer to nature in a way that few other lifestyles can. The rhythm of the waves, the panoramic ocean views, and the ability to witness marine life up close become a part of your daily life. This connection to the natural world is not just visually stunning but also offers a sense of peace and tranquility.

View of the Open Seas from a Yacht

The unique living experiences that come with yacht life are endless. From waking up to the gentle lapping of waves against the hull to enjoying sunsets over the water every evening, these experiences enrich life aboard. Each day presents an opportunity to create unforgettable memories, whether it’s swimming in crystal-clear waters, fishing for your dinner, or simply enjoying the serenity of the sea.

Overview of the Sense of Community in Marinas and Sailing Circles

One might think that living on a boat could be isolating, but the reality is quite the opposite. Yacht marinas and sailing communities are often vibrant and welcoming. When you dock or anchor your yacht, you’re not just stopping at a place; you’re becoming part of a community. These communities are characterized by shared experiences, mutual assistance, and a common passion for the sea.

Life in a marina is rich with social interactions. Fellow liveaboards and sailors form a tight-knit community, often gathering for shared meals, group excursions, or simply exchanging stories and advice. This camaraderie is a significant part of the allure of yacht living. The sense of belonging is palpable, as everyone shares a common understanding of the joys and challenges of life at sea.

The community extends beyond the physical confines of the marina. Sailing circles worldwide are connected by a shared love for cruising and exploration. Whether it’s through organized regattas, informal meet-ups, or online forums, these connections foster a sense of global community. Sailors often form lasting friendships, bound by their shared experiences and adventures at sea.

Superyachts in luxury yacht marina

Marinas often host events and activities that further strengthen these bonds. From educational workshops to social gatherings, there is a sense of collective growth and enjoyment. Living at a marina or being part of a sailing community isn’t just about having a place to dock your boat; it’s about being part of a supportive and engaging network that enriches your life aboard.

If you’re considering taking this step into yacht life, you may want to consider a test run. Charter a private yacht and try this lifestyle out for yourself. You may even decide you prefer renting over buying. Rent one model today, and then — when your mood or plans change — change the yacht for rent.  You don’t have to commit right away, this isn’t a marriage, it’s a yacht.

Space and Design: Adapting to Yacht Interiors

Transitioning to live on a boat full-time introduces a unique set of challenges and opportunities, particularly when it comes to space and design. Yacht interiors, whether in a luxury yacht or a modest sailboat, require thoughtful planning and clever solutions to make the most of the available space. This section delves into the art of maximizing space, the crucial role of organization, and the myriad ways you can personalize your floating home.

Maximizing Limited Space: Innovative Design Solutions

The key to successful boat life lies in efficiently utilizing the limited space. Every square inch on a boat counts, and making the most of this space is vital for comfortable living. Design solutions often involve multi-functional furniture, such as beds with storage underneath, foldable tables, or convertible seating areas. These innovations allow for a practical living environment without sacrificing comfort or style.

Luxury Yacht Interior

Another aspect is the strategic use of vertical space. Wall-mounted shelves, hanging organizers, and overhead storage can free up valuable floor space. In a sailboat, for example, the interior can be designed with built-in storage in unexpected places like under the stairs or in the hull. This approach ensures that every part of the boat is utilized effectively.

The type of boat also plays a role in how space can be maximized. For instance, catamarans typically offer more living space compared to monohulls, making them a popular choice for those looking to move aboard full-time. Regardless of the boat type, the goal is to create a space that is both functional and comfortable.

The Importance of Efficient Organization When Yachting

Living on a boat full-time demands a high level of organization. The limited space means there’s little room for clutter, making it essential to keep everything in its place. Efficient organization not only makes life on board more comfortable but also ensures safety when the boat is in motion.

Organizational strategies include using containers and baskets to keep items secure, labeling storage areas for easy access, and regularly decluttering to avoid accumulating unnecessary items. This discipline in organization extends to all aspects of boat life, from the kitchen and living areas to personal belongings and maintenance tools.

Boat insurance policies often require certain safety standards to be maintained,

and a well-organized boat is more likely to meet these requirements. Keeping equipment properly stored and accessible can be critical in emergencies. Additionally, an organized interior can help in reducing the overall cost of living on a boat, as it prevents damage and loss of items, which could be costly to replace.

Customization Options for Personalizing Your Space

Turning a yacht into a home involves more than just functional adjustments; it’s about infusing your personality into the space. Customization allows boat dwellers to create an environment that reflects their style and preferences, adding to the enjoyment of luxury yacht living.

Personalizing a yacht interior can range from choosing color schemes and fabrics to selecting artwork and – perhaps – some nautical-themed decorative items . Many boat owners opt for a full tour of customization, tailoring each aspect of the yacht to their liking. This could include custom-built furniture, unique lighting fixtures, or bespoke floorings, such as teak or bamboo.

For those living on a sailboat, customization might mean optimizing the layout for sailing efficiency while also creating a cozy, livable space. This could involve installing custom cabinetry that fits the boat’s contours or adding personal touches like cushions and throws that make the space feel like home.

Yacht Interior

Customization also extends to technological upgrades. Modern yachts can be equipped with advanced navigation systems, entertainment setups, and climate control, enhancing the overall experience of boat life. These modifications not only add comfort but also can increase the boat’s value.

In essence, adapting to yacht interiors is a blend of practicality, organization, and personalization. Whether you’re planning to move aboard a sailboat or a luxury yacht, these elements work in harmony to create a living space that is not just functional but truly feels like home.

Climate Considerations When You Live on a Boat Full-Time

The climatic conditions of the chosen residence place or travel route are not the most obvious factor which must be noted. Being in a city apartment or a private house, we don’t think much about the weather outside the window. If a strong wind blows outside, heavy rain falls or the temperature suddenly drops, we will feel almost nothing.

On a yacht, the weather does not just play an important role, your safety and comfort directly depend on it. Each boat is individual and suitable for certain climatic conditions. It is worth analyzing all the characteristics of the boat in advance and honestly evaluating its capabilities in order to accurately determine whether it is possible to  live on a yacht all year round in your chosen water area.

Financial Considerations: The Cost of Yacht Life

Embarking on the journey of yacht life involves more than just adapting to a new way of living; it also requires a clear understanding of the financial implications. While it’s easy to romanticize the idea of sailing around the world or living full-time on a boat, the reality comes with its own set of financial responsibilities. From the initial purchase of the boat to ongoing expenses and the comparison to traditional homeownership, understanding these costs is crucial for anyone considering this lifestyle.

Initial Investment: Purchasing and Outfitting a Yacht

The first step in yacht life is acquiring the right boat. This involves not only finding the best boat that suits your needs but also managing the financial investment it requires. The cost of a new boat can vary widely, depending on factors such as size, brand, and features, some of which we covered above. Choosing to live on a larger boat or a luxury cruiser naturally involves a higher initial investment.

In addition to the purchase price, outfitting a yacht for full-time living is a significant consideration. This may include upgrading boat systems, adding navigation equipment, and customizing the interior to make it livable. Even if you opt for an old, more affordable boat, it could require substantial investment in renovations and upgrades.

Furthermore, acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills for yacht maintenance and sailing is part of the initial investment. This might entail sailing courses, safety training, and learning about the nautical aspects of yacht care.

Ongoing Expenses: Maintenance, Docking Fees, Insurance

Once you own a yacht, the financial commitments continue. Boat maintenance is an ongoing requirement and a crucial part of life aboard. The yacht owners will need knowledge and skills to keep the yacht in good condition. Regular upkeep ensures the safety and longevity of your boat. This includes everything from engine maintenance to hull cleaning and can vary greatly in cost, depending on the age and condition of your boat.

El Gouna Yacht Maintenance

Docking fees are another significant expense, especially if you choose to stay at marinas. The cost can vary based on location and the services offered. Additionally, a dinghy might be necessary for transportation to and from the shore, adding to the expenses.

Insurance is an essential consideration for any boater. Boat insurance policies can be complex and vary greatly in coverage and cost. It’s crucial to have a comprehensive policy that covers potential damages and liabilities, especially when living on a boat full-time.

Comparing the Cost of Living to Traditional Homeownership

When contemplating yacht life, it’s common to wonder if you’ll save money compared to traditional homeownership. The answer depends on various factors, including the type and size of the boat, the chosen lifestyle, and where you plan to dock or anchor.

Annual costs for yacht living can include maintenance, insurance, docking fees, and fuel, which can be comparable to or even exceed the costs of owning a home. However, some expenses, like property taxes and certain utilities, may be lower or non-existent.

A gas station on the quay for yachts

It’s also important to consider the value of the experience and lifestyle when comparing costs. Yacht life offers a unique set of experiences and freedoms that traditional homeownership cannot provide. While the financial aspect is crucial, the decision to live on a yacht often goes beyond mere economics.

Living on a boat full-time can also mean a shift in priorities and lifestyle choices. For some, this means downsizing and simplifying life, which can lead to reduced overall living expenses. However, for others, particularly those choosing a luxury yacht or a larger boat, the costs can be comparable to or even exceed those of a high-end terrestrial home.

Challenges and Downsides of Full-Time Living on a Boat

Living on a yacht presents a unique set of challenges and downsides that are important to consider before making the leap into this lifestyle. While the idea of living on a boat may evoke images of endless sunsets and tranquil waters, the reality can be quite different. Factors such as weather dependency, limited access to facilities, and the psychological impacts of isolation and confined spaces play a significant role in day-to-day life on a yacht.

Weather Dependency and Its Impact

One of the most significant challenges of living on a yacht is the constant need to be mindful of the weather. Your entire life becomes closely tied to weather conditions, which can change rapidly and without warning.

  • Safety Concerns : Severe weather can pose serious safety risks. Being caught in a storm while at sea can be dangerous, and even when docked, high winds and waves can cause damage to your yacht.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments : Daily activities and travel plans often have to be adjusted according to the weather. This can mean being stuck in a location longer than planned or missing out on certain experiences.
  • Constant Vigilance : Living on a yacht requires a high level of awareness and knowledge of weather patterns. This can be mentally taxing, as one always needs to be prepared for the possibility of changing plans or taking emergency precautions.

Yacht on Calm Waters at Night

Remember the old saying, “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning!”

Limited Access to Certain Facilities and Services When You Live on a Yacht

Another downside of yacht life is the limited access to facilities and services that are often taken for granted on land.

  • Healthcare and Emergency Services : In remote areas, access to healthcare and emergency services can be limited or delayed. This can be a concern for those with medical conditions or in case of accidents.
  • Utility Services : Services like high-speed internet, electricity, and plumbing work differently on a yacht and may not always be reliable. This can affect both work and daily living.
  • Convenience and Shopping : Getting groceries or finding specific supplies can be challenging, especially when anchored away from urban centers. This requires careful planning and often means you can’t have everything you want when you want it.

Dealing with Isolation and Confined Spaces When Living Aboard a Boat

The psychological aspects of living on a yacht are often overlooked, yet they are crucial for a sustainable life at sea.

  • Isolation from Society : While some seek solitude, prolonged periods of isolation can affect mental health. Being away from family, friends, and the wider community can lead to feelings of loneliness.
  • Small Living Quarters : The confined space of a boat can be challenging, especially for those used to larger living spaces. It requires adjustments in both physical belongings and mental preparedness for close-quarters living.
  • Cabin Fever : Spending extended periods on a boat, especially during bad weather when you can’t leave, can lead to a sense of restlessness or cabin fever. This is where the small space and isolation can compound to impact mental well-being.

While living on a yacht can be an incredibly rewarding experience, it’s important to acknowledge and prepare for the challenges and downsides. Understanding the realities of weather dependency, limited access to amenities, and the psychological effects of isolation and confined spaces is crucial for anyone considering making a boat their home. These factors are integral to life at sea and require careful consideration and planning to ensure a fulfilling and sustainable lifestyle on the water.

Ulysses luxury yacht ~ private chef interview.

Have you ever dreamed of cruising around in a luxury charter yacht? If you’ve ever been lucky enough to experience the yachting luxury lifestyle from the perspective of a guest then you’ll certainly be aware that it’s an experience like no other, full of the finer things in life. Some people call luxury yachts their home; some live and work full time on these magnificent super boats. These fortunate few get to experience almost everything that the guests do and they get paid for their time as well!

Shane, a New Zealander who has been living on yachts for over 10 years, is currently the chef on board the superyacht Ulysses based in the Mediterranean. He recently shared some of his story and some of his best yachting experiences from his time spent traveling around the globe and it certainly sounds rewarding living amidst the ultimate luxury lifestyle.

How did you end up on yachts?

Yachting Luxury Lifestyle

“I started out working in restaurants like most chefs and worked my way up to become the sous-chef at a Michelin starred restaurant. One day by chance some friends of mine phoned me up saying they knew somebody looking for a chef on one of their luxury yachts. I jumped at the chance and have been on boats ever since.”

During his time working on luxury charter yachts Shane has travelled all over the globe. “In total I have clocked up over 200,000 nautical miles which will be pretty hard to beat. I have been fortunate enough to have seen so many wonderful things and met some incredible people along the way.”

What Memories Stand Out?

“My best cooking while yachting experience would have to be cooking a spit roast pig on a pink sand beach in Fakarava, an atoll in the west of the Tuamotu group in French Polynesia. Everyone got involved including the guests and everyone wanted a go at turning the spit. When you see everyone else enjoying themselves so much, all the hard work is worth it. Whilst we were here we went diving with the boss and saw some incredible sea life including bottle nosed dolphins and hundreds of sharks.”

Can you always get the supplies that you need?

Yacht Charters

“Shopping on a luxury superyacht is not always easy. On my first boat in Chile I had a real baptism of fire. We were making a crossing to Pitcairn Island that would take 5 weeks and so I had to make sure that we had enough provisions. I hit the fish market in Valdivia and pretty much took everything. I ended up leaving the market with 14 shopping trollies packed full to the brim and two whole pallets of fruit and veg. It took me a couple of days just to pack everything away and clean and freeze the meat and fish for the journey. After all this I still didn’t have enough food and so I took a helicopter to Carrefour to stock up even more.  It’s a yachting lifestyle memory of mine that I’ll never forget. Now that I’m based in the Med there are great provisions and shopping is a lot less stressful. I use Gourmet Deliveries as I really like them, and they will get me all the yacht supplies I need delivered straight to the boat. When I have a 2 day turn-around I can’t really afford to shop – I fill in their form and they get it sorted.”

Luxury Yachting

What is your style?

“I don’t  have a particular style. I love markets and fresh ingredients. I don’t really tie myself down and just let my ingredients govern what I cook. I want people to come onboard and feel at home so they let me know what they like and I go with that. I can do American, Mexican, Korean, Japanese, French, Italian – anything they want. I get lessons from some guests and I give cooking lessons to others. I do love a good BBQ, and we have one onboard MY Ulysses. I like getting the right cuts of meat. I suppose it is a “primal” way to eat. I also make my own pasta.”

What do you do in your free time?

“Nowadays I have the chance to spend more time at home in New Zealand with my family as I only work in the summer. I love snowboarding and so I also spend a lot of my time off in Alps D’Huez or Tignes in the French Alps riding some fresh snow. I live near the mountains in NZ so it reminds me of home when I’ve been away yachting for a while, plus the snow is better and the hills are higher. I also love to eat steak and drink red wine.”

If you want to find out more about Shane’s incredible luxury yachting story and try some of his exquisite cuisine, My Ulysses is available for yacht charter in the Mediterranean this summer with Fraser Yachts .

Yachting lifestyle

Are you ready for it?

What is Yachting? According to Wikipedia: Yachting is the use of recreational boats and ships called yachts for sporting purposes. Yachts are distinguished from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose. Both terms originate from the Dutch word jacht (“hunt”). With sailboats, it is called sailing, and with motorboats, it is called powerboating.

So we mostly have a misconstrued understanding of what yachting is all about. Usually, yachting is associated where only wealthy people are resting in yacht clubs. Well, mostly correct, but yachting lifestyle has nothing to do with being rich. There is much more to it.

What’s It Like Living on a Yacht?

For most people, a property with a seashore view is the best with the sound of the ocean and a breathtaking sunset view.

But have you ever thought what this view would be like from your yacht? Probably you thought it was beautiful! The peaceful, stunning ocean views that a yacht offers are just a few of the many reasons why life is only better on a boat.

Time to Unwind

Therefore living on a yacht is as peaceful guaranteeing you will have tons of time to unwind and leave the pressures of everyday life.  Also you’ll be free from the endless hum of traffic, barking dogs, and your neighbor’s noisy toddler. You’ll escape everything, and all you hear is the relaxing sound of waves.

Here are 8 Reasons why life on a yacht is better

  • Privacy & Safety –  If you are looking for privacy, then living in a yacht is for you. According to most yacht owners, one of the things they most enjoy about life on the water is the privacy they have.
  •  – Travel –  Most yacht owners love freedom and go whenever they want to. Yachting is the best way to travel and explore the world from the harbor to harbor.
  • Creating Memories –  Your travels will create great memories. Life on a yacht creates excellent photos, excellent conversations, and a sense of enjoyment for the owner.
  • Decluttering Your Life –  If you have lots of stuff and decided to live on a yacht, then it is time to declutter. Life on a yacht may be the excuse you were looking for to sell everything off, pack up the rest, and go.
  • Entertainment –  Perhaps you are wondering how you’ll spend time on your yacht. Well, you might be surprised, but the truth is the possibilities are endless. Luxury yachts today are equipped with modern kitchens, multiple bedrooms and living rooms, sun decks, gyms, entertainment systems, high-end sound systems, hot tubs, pools, and much more. You’ll feel like you’re on a cruise ship.
  • Stunning Ocean Views –  Nothing can beat great ocean views while onboard enjoying your favorite wine or champagne.
  • Freedom  – When you live on a yacht, you have the freedom to go wherever you want. You can plan your itinerary travels depends on the weather of course. The flexibility allows a great sense of freedom and self-reliance.
  • Adventure –  If you like adventure, then yachting is for you because amazing things happen when you are aboard a boat. Of course, terrible time happens like bad weather, mechanical problems, etc.) Unpredictability is part of the yachting living, and people who love adventure like unexpected situations.

If you are ready to live a yachting lifestyle, then consider the steps below

Steps to Make Life on a Yacht Even Better | Yachting Lifestyle

  • Before purchasing a yacht, spend some time and sleep a few nights on it to ensure if you can handle the life at sea.
  • If you are likely to get motion sickness, then consider a larger yacht because it will rock less during stormy weather.
  • Have a conversation with other yacht owners to find out what works for them.

Exploring the Luxury Lifestyle: Owning a Superyacht in Singapore

F rom the sparkling coastline to the breathtaking vista of its iconic skyline, Singapore presents an alluring retreat for those who prefer a luxurious lifestyle. Its affluent populace, along with affluent visitors from around the world, has led to a burgeoning demand for superyachts in this island nation. A superyacht isn’t merely a status symbol; it’s a lifestyle choice that echoes an individual’s passion for luxury, adventure, and the penchant for the unexplored. Using knowledge from Simpson Superyachts’ guide to owning luxury vessels in Singapore , this article seeks to offer a thorough guide for embracing and prospering in this distinctive, opulent nautical lifestyle.

The Allure of Superyacht Ownership

Having a superyacht gives its owners an unrivaled degree of seclusion, luxury, and independence; it’s like having your own moving island. A superyacht offers an unmatched way to enjoy Singapore’s beauty and opulence, whether one wants to cruise the pristine waterways of Southeast Asia or throw lavish, unforgettable parties against the mesmerizing backdrop of the Singapore cityscape. In Singapore’s ever-changing maritime scene, a superyacht personifies luxury living and adventure through its unique combination of exclusivity and mobility.

Understanding the Basics

Understanding a few key aspects of yacht ownership is essential before deciding to buy a superyacht. Superyachts range in length from 24 to over 100 meters, with a crew to oversee operations. Their sizes also vary greatly. These magnificent vessels meet the greatest standards of comfort and amusement with a plethora of opulent amenities, such as large state suites, fully equipped bars, helipads, swimming pools, and even onboard theatres. Nevertheless, the cost of owning a superyacht goes much beyond the original purchase price and includes recurring charges for things like maintenance, crew pay, insurance, and marina fees. Potential owners must do extensive financial planning to make sure they can afford the long-term expenditures of yacht ownership and maintenance, given the substantial financial commitment needed.

Selecting the Perfect Superyacht

Selecting the perfect superyacht requires careful consideration of your needs, wants, and intended use. Finding the ideal fit takes careful thought because there is such a wide range of alternatives to choose from, including sleek, sporty yachts made for weekend outings and explorer yachts intended for longer trips. To make sure that every element, from layout and facilities to aesthetic aspects, matches their specific tastes and needs, many customers choose to have their yachts custom-built. Reputable yacht brokers, like Simpson Superyachts, are essential to this process since they provide potential owners with crucial knowledge and direction.

Here’s a list of different types of yachts:

  • Motor Yachts: Powered by engines, motor yachts offer speed, comfort, and luxury, ranging from sleek, sporty designs to spacious, long-range cruisers.
  • Sailing Yachts: Driven primarily by wind power, sailing yachts evoke a sense of tradition and elegance, offering serene and eco-friendly cruising experiences.
  • Explorer Yachts: Designed for long-distance voyages and exploration, explorer yachts feature robust construction, extended fuel range, and amenities tailored for adventurous expeditions.
  • Catamarans: Catamarans boast two hulls, providing stability, spaciousness, and efficiency, making them ideal for cruising in shallow waters and island hopping.

Understanding Laws and Regulations

Singaporean law requires that all yachts be registered with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Additionally, superyachts docking in Singapore must adhere to local marine regulations. Some of these concern maritime safety, crew training, insurance, and pollution control. It’s vital to familiarise oneself with these regulations or work with a knowledgeable broker who can navigate through the legal and regulatory complexities.

Tax and Customs

Another critical aspect of superyacht ownership in Singapore is understanding the applicable taxes. Currently, Singapore does not impose tax on foreign-registered yachts. However, GST is levied on locally registered yachts. Also, certain customs rules must be adhered to when bringing your superyacht into Singapore.

Maintenance Matters

Superyachts require regular, high-quality maintenance to ensure safety and longevity. Whether it’s routine engine service, hull cleaning, or interior refurbishment, your yacht must be meticulously maintained. These responsibilities can be managed individually or delegated to a yacht management company.

Crew Hiring

The crew of a superyacht is essential to the seamless running and enjoyment of the yacht. Every member of the crew plays a vital role in ensuring that passengers have an unforgettable day, from the knowledgeable captain in charge of navigation and safety to the kind deckhands and catering personnel. Superyacht owners should work with respectable companies that specialize in crew recruiting to guarantee a high caliber of service and professionalism.

Moreover, undergirding these aspects and ensuring a seamless adventure is the Simpson Superyachts guide to owning luxury vessels in Singapore. Regarded as a comprehensive, tailored resource, this guide assists prospective owners through every step of the superyacht ownership journey, from initial inquiry to sailing off into the sunset. It provides an invaluable wealth of knowledge and expertise to navigate the world of luxury yachts in Singapore, setting you free to embark on your high-sea adventure truly.

TESTIMONIALS

What clients say about us

The best part of being in the Algarve by far was our day with Pedro out on the water. Boat and service were impeccable and the experience was so much more than a “ride”. We could tell from the minute we met Pedro that he has a passion for his country and especially experiencing it from the water. Sure he showed us what Instagram deems a must – but if you place your trust in him you will get to experience the hidden gems of the Portugal coastline that are truly magical. He was so kind and patient with our family and provided an unhurried and memorable experience. Highly recommend!!

Jennifer Richardson

Pedro and his crew were fabulous! We went out with them for two full days over the course of our week in Lagos, and saw completely different parts of the coastline. The boat was beautiful and comfortable (a 40ft catamaran), and our group had a fabulous, unforgettable time both days. I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Lagos!

Valerie Bradley

The day trip we took with captain Pedro was our favorite day in Portugal! The catamaran was beautiful, large and comfortable. The service and care on the boat was professional – and fun 🤩. Instructions on how to arrive at the boat were impeccable. And to top it all off, captain Pedro asked us our favorite genre of music – making sure even this detail on the trip was perfect! We booked the trip a second time already!with our family and provided an unhurried and memorable experience. Highly recommend!!

8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Kokomo,’ the Lightning-Fast 192-Foot Sailing Superyacht

The 192-footer has a 242-foot-high mast and spinnaker half the size of a football field. but it's so automated it can be sailed by two people., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Sailing Superyacht Kokomo

The 192-foot Kokomo was the second largest sloop in the world when it launched from New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts shipyard in 2010. It remains the largest fast-cruising sloop available for charter. The yacht’s commissioning owner Lang Walker (who died in January 2024) was a seasoned sailor who gave all three of his yachts the same name.

The first was a 131-foot sloop, which Walker replaced five years later with a 171-footer. The same day he took delivery of his 171-foot sloop, he placed an order for the third and final 192-foot Kokomo, which he planned to use for racing and cruising around the world. He also kept the same design team for all three yachts, with exterior and naval architecture by Ed Dubois and interior by UK’s RWD.

The reference to the yacht’s name has had different explanations over the years, ranging from the pseudonym of a composer whose music Walker played as a child to a nod to the Beach Boys’s song from their 1988 album Still Cruisin’ , which references a fictional utopian island called Kokomo. The island fantasy was brought to life in 2011 when Walker acquired a private island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef and named it Kokomo .

Here are eight unknown facts about one of the most game-changing sailing yachts on the water.

You’re Going to Need a Bigger Boom

yachting luxury lifestyle

When Kokomo was launched, she was the second-largest sloop in the world and carried the largest set of sails made by Doyle Sails in New Zealand. The 23,971-square-foot asymmetric spinnaker is half the size of a professional football field, while the 9,688-square-foot mainsail needs a crane to lift it. Because of the gargantuan size of the sails, the designers entered a new era of spar and winch design, having to “reinvent” the deck equipment—winches, mast, boom, rigging and sails—to cope with the 31.6-ton load on the genoa sheet and 32-ton load on the main sheet clew. The 244-foot carbon mast is the largest ever made by Southern Spars.

The yacht’s 130-ton lifting keel is one of its most impressive features, though it’s largely left to the imagination. The interior layout is carefully designed so that the keel structure remains hidden. Dubois Naval Architects positioned the keel box to come above the main deck, serving as a partial separation between the bridge and the main salon (see inset). Kokomo was only the second yacht to be fitted with a lifting a keel, the first being 246-foot M5 (ex-Mirabella V), the world’s largest single-masted sailing yacht. This innovative design shortens Kokomo’s 28.5-foot draft when the keel is fully extended, to just 15 feet for shallow waters.

Fast-Track Sailing

yachting luxury lifestyle

Kokomo was one of the first yachts to be fitted with a hydraulic batt-car system for furling the mainsail, which has cars at each batten end that slot in an outer track on the mast. This alleviates a once-common issue where the luff tape or bolt rope on large sailing yachts became chaffed by the compression of the battens, which often caused the in-boom furling mainsails to fail. “When sailing Kokomo , especially when racing, I am completely impressed with the speed and efficiency of the hydraulic system,” says Kokomo ’s captain, Jeremy ‘Bear’ Wynne, who notes the yacht’s recorded top speed is a very impressive 22 knots. “The jib furlers are some of the fastest I have seen. There is absolutely no shortage of hydraulic power, even with multiple winches running on a jibe—a rarity on a big sailing yacht.”

Now You See It, Now You Don’t

yachting luxury lifestyle

Kokomo might be big on technology, but never at the expense of design. The wheelhouse has fold-down computer screens that conceal the navigation equipment when not in use, converting to beautiful carbon counter tops. This design sleight of hand transforms a highly technical area into a tony lounge. It’s a theme that extends to the foredeck, where the yacht’s two tenders are concealed in dedicated lockers. There’s also a fully retractable tender crane that launches the tenders from either side of the boat but disappears out of sight when guests are using the Jacuzzi. “The designated deck lockers were an advanced feature at the time of her launch,” says Wynne, adding that another bonus is that diesel tanks are fully available. “The tenders can be fueled onboard before launching.”

It Takes Just A Few Good Sailors

yachting luxury lifestyle

Kokomo can accommodate up to 10 crew in total, but theoretically it only takes two to sail—a helm person and a sail trimmer. That sounds almost impossible given the size and complexity of yacht. But all sails are controlled by joystick on the flybridge. And when the boat is in full-on racing mode, there are control stations on both sides, providing visibility of the sails. Thanks to the hydraulics system, the mainsail can be hoisted and lowered on a wireless remote control. Of course, maneuvers like stowing the massive genoa can never be automated. That’s a job for a half-dozen good sailors.

Art On Board

yachting luxury lifestyle

The hallway that leads to the owner’s cabin is lined with a mosaic tapestry made from sea glass woven together with wire. Backlit to create an unusual effect, it’s just one of the eclectic works of art that decorates the interior. The main salon also has a stunning and colorful work of glass art as another example.

Interior Matters

yachting luxury lifestyle

Kokomo is not all tech features. The yacht’s modern interiors combine dark wood floors and calming cream furnishings start in the main salon and continue across the five guest cabins. Penned by British studio Redman Whiteley Dixon, the design carefully wraps around the lifting keel without sacrificing or impeding on any interior guest space. The yacht accommodates up to 10 guests in a master suite, VIP, one double cabin and two twins. There are other accommodations for up to 10 crew. On the foredeck, the Jacuzzi brings another element of outdoor entertainment, bolstered by a sunken cockpit.

World Traveler

yachting luxury lifestyle

The mandate issued by Walker was to create a yacht that was a “quantum leap forward” from his previous yachts, with superior sailing characteristics and guest comfort. The mast’s height is too tall to sail through the Panama or Suez Canals, which meant it would have to be designed to sail around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope to reach the Caribbean and Mediterranean. The maiden voyage took the yacht from the New Zealand shipyard to Australia, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji. It also spent time at Walker’s private island (pictured above), also named Kokomo. The vessel has since spent many years exploring the Caribbean and Med. It’s based in both regions during the respective cruising seasons, with charters available through Cecil Wright.

A revived luxury cruise line wants you to spend more than 4 months at sea sailing to 27 countries for $84,000

  • Crystal says its around-the-world cruise in 2026 will sail to 72 ports in 27 countries.
  • Luxury travel company Abercrombie and Kent acquired Crystal in 2022 following the latter's tumultuous demise.
  • Crystal's first world cruise following its revival and rebrand departed in February.

Insider Today

Recently relaunched luxury cruise line Crystal wants to woo you back. How does a 135-day around-the-world sailing sound?

In 2026, Crystal says one of its two ships will sail from Los Angeles to Rome on a 4 ½ -month cruise. Along the way, travelers can expect to see 72 ports in 27 countries, from Australia's recognizable Sydney Opera House to Monaco's legendary Grand Prix.

On January 11, 2026, the cruise line says its Crystal Serenity will head west from California to Pacific Islands like Bora Bora.

Then, it's off to New Zealand and Australia before hitting destinations like Hong Kong, Mumbai, and Bali, Indonesia.

Let’s not forget stops in Athens, Greece, and the Mediterranean before an exciting call in Monaco.

yachting luxury lifestyle

From there, about 4 ½ months at sea later, the global journey would finally conclude in Rome on May 26, 2026.

Bookings for a double occupancy cabin will open on March 19 at $84,000 per person.

Throughout the journey, travelers will get to luxuriate in Crystal Serenity's venues, which include a piano bar and cognac and cigar club.

Active guests can spend their afternoons at the putting green or pickleball court.

Travelers seeking a relaxing vacation can instead head to the spa or sip on afternoon tea at the floor-to-ceiling window-lined lounge.

The only thing more dramatic than this global cruise? The journey Crystal took to get here.

yachting luxury lifestyle

It wasn't always smooth sailing for the luxury cruise line. In early 2022, Crystal, then Crystal Cruises, made a big splash — and not the good kind.

At the time, the company — then owned by Genting Hong Kong — was facing bankruptcy, the sudden shutdown of its US operations, and the arrest of two of its cruise ships over millions of dollars in unpaid fuel bills.

A few months later, luxury travel group Abercrombie and Kent acquired the cruise line and its previously arrested ships.

Not the clothing store that smells like cologne (that's Abercombie and Fitch).

These days, Crystal and its ships look a bit different.

yachting luxury lifestyle

Like your best friend post-breakup, Crystal has taken on a new identity: The company dropped "cruises" from its name and spent $150 million refreshing its two ships , the Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Both resumed service in 2023.

In February, the company’s first world cruise since its revival departed San Diego on a 125-night sailing.

yachting luxury lifestyle

The Crystal Serenity is now traveling around the globe with almost 200 guests, a company spokesperson told Business Insider. (Baby steps: The ship has a guest capacity of 740, though the company points out that some segments of the around-the-world itinerary have actually been fully booked.)

However, the spokesperson said bookings for its 2025 around-the-world sailing are "even stronger, with a significant portion" of its 2024 world cruise guests having also booked the 2025 itinerary.

Crystal’s upcoming sailings currently start at five nights long.

yachting luxury lifestyle

But like other premium operators, it looks like Crystal will continue leaning into its around-the-world itineraries , as signaled by its recently announced 2026 global sailing.

Electric rv, bowlus rivet luxury rv allows for ‘indefinite time’ off-grid with yacht-quality battery and solar.

Avatar for Peter Johnson

Oh, and did I mention it can park itself? Bowlus revealed its most rugged travel trailer yet, the off-grid Rivet. The Bowlus Rivet features a “yacht-quality” battery and solar power system that allows “indefinite time off-grid in all conditions.”

Trailblazing the luxury electric RV market

Bowlus is best known for upgrading travel. In 1934, he launched the first aluminum travel trailer. As the story goes, Bowlus blazed the trail years before Airstream’s iconic “Silver Bullet” hit the market.

The company has continued its history of innovation with products like the first fully aluminum monocoque space frame. The new design reduces an RV’s weight by about half compared to similar-sized models.

Bowlus has used the design to enable easier towing, fusing it with a luxurious interior and best-in-class comfort.

In 2016, Bowlus launched the first lithium-powered RV, complete with a 4kWh lithium-ion power system. The system provided enough off-grid energy for a week. This included air conditioning for the first time.

Bowlus released the Volterra in 2022, calling it “the world’s first all-electric RV.” Starting at $310,00, the Volterra featured 17 kWh of power, solar panels, kitchen essentials, EV charging, and more.

Bowlus-luxury-electric-RV

Following the Volterra’s success, Bowlus revealed plans to become the first fully electric RV company.

Meet the new 2025 Bowlus Rivet Luxury RV

Bowlus launched its most rugged travel trailer yet, the 2025 Rivet luxury RV. At 3,500 lbs, the Bowlus Rivet is “towable by the most extensive selection of vehicles of any other full-sized RV,” including EVs like the Tesla Model Y .

The Bowlus Rivet luxury RV includes a robust power system with a “yacht-quality” 8 kWh lithium battery and up to 660 W of solar power generation.

Bowlus-Rivet-Luxury-RV

Bowlus says the system allows “indefinite time off-grid in all conditions.” Like its other models, the Rivet can run appliances like air conditioning and heating off-grid with its best-in-class Bowlus Power Management System and AeroSolar.

The Rivet is also the first production RV to be self-propelled, self-powered, and remote-controlled from essentially anywhere. It also includes a 3″ lift kit and added off-road tires.

With AeroMove, the Rivet can drive up steep slopes, turn 360 degrees, and fit into campsites, driveways, or parallel parking spaces. According to Geneva Longer, founder and CEO, AeroMove is a camper’s dream that the company has quietly been working on for over five years.

Bowlus EasyHitch also allows you to hook on the trailer in under 60 seconds, according to the company.

Bowlus-Rivet-Luxury-RV

The Rivet’s (25′ 3″) compact floor plan features a separate bedroom, a luxury bathroom, and spacious living and kitchen.

You also get a hotel-style shower, fridge/freezer, air conditioning, heat, two-burner induction cooktop, faucet, microwave, plenty of storage, and more.

The 2025 Bowlus Rivet Luxury EV is $148,500 after the tax credit. If you want the AeroMove feature, it will cost you an additional $10,000.

If interested, you can preorder the Rivet on Bowlus website with a $100 refundable deposit.
