+ History - Yachting Magazine (March 1965)

When a boat is a definite expression of her owner, his personality, his ideas, his special requirements, his background, and his feelings for things nautical, she inevitably takes on added interest. For this reason, EXACT, a handsome vessel that would attract attention under any circumstances, is one of the most notable yachts of recent seasons. She is well worth a study by anyone who appreciates the thought that can be put into a boat, whether she be an outboard fishing skiff, an ocean racing auxiliary, a one-design sailboat, a family cabin cruiser or a luxury yacht. EXACT, 86'5"x77'5"x20'x6'6", designed by H. W. DeVoogt & Sons, and built by C. Van Lent & Zonen in Kaag, Holland, of steel, was delivered there last spring to J. Burr Bartram of Greenwich, Conn. After a three week shakedown cruise to the Frisian Islands, then back through the lake country via canals to the Rhine at Arnhem, down the Rhine to Flushing, in Zealand, and then back to Rotterdam, she was shipped to the U.S by frieghter. Bartram, whose family ancestry goes back to a long tradition of New England seafarers and ship owners, is a former commodore of the New York Yacht Club, who has owned a succession of powerboats, motorsailers, and auxiliaries. They have all carried names taken from family ships the era of sail, and EXACT is named for a bark built in Derby, Conn., for Bartram interests in the 19th century. "We have had boats for racing, for cruising and for fishing," Commodore Bartram explains it, "and this time, frankly, we wanted a boat for comfortable spectating at the America's Cup trials and other races that would also be a good cruising boat. This meant she should be comfortable to live aboard for long periods, have good visibility from anywhere on deck, be a good sea boat, and be easy to handle and maneuver. She has really worked out very well in all these demands, and we are very pleased with her." Bartram is one of the few owners of yachts this size who likes to be his own skipper while aboard, although he does, of course, have a professional captain and crew. He is particularly enthusiastic over how EXACT handles, for a boat of her size, in a seaway while underway, in a large spectator fleet, and in maneuvering in close quarters in such a crowded spot as Newport, R.T., was last summer. Her twin screw 336 hp. HM V-8 diesels, permanent fin stabilizers and double-ended hull, all requirements  Bartram worked out with the designer, along with many details of her layout and arrangements, all contribute to her performance and ease of handling. The stabilizers definitely dampen rolling and provide a much more pleasant motion at sea. Since Newport's well-known swells were larger, on the average, last summer, than in many other years, this meant a great deal of extra comfort in watching the 12-Meter races. The only drawback to the fins is that care is needed while docking, as they cannot be retracted, as can some models. Any pilings that slant out under water are a special hazard, but they are protected from normal vertical piers and bulkheads by the turn of the hull. Since EXACT is used for southern cruising in the winter, the fins should be a welcome addition for crossing the Gulf Stream to the islands, and in such spots as the Northwest and Northeast Providence Channels and the Tongue of the Ocean, as well as on the passage north and south. Her double-ended hull form has definitely contributed to her feel and performance at sea. While the rounded stern would limit speed in a smaller boat, a hull this size could only be driven at high speeds at tremendous cost in money and comfort. However, her waterline is long enough for her to achieve the 10-12 knot cruising top speed range that is sensible for a boat of this category, even with a rounded stern. For greater comfort and better steering, it is a positive benefit in a following sea, and she slides along easily. "I really enjoy handling her," is Bartram's comment. "She steers and maneuvers so well that it is a positive pleasure, and it adds a great deal to the fun of a day at sea for me." The attention to good visibility makes her a more interesting boat to be aboard at all times. The Cup yachts could be seen from a seated position anywhere on her main deck, forward or aft, and from inside the main salon on the main deck (she was often used by member of the NYYC selection committee for this reason). This is a plus while cruising in scenic areas, which was immediately brought home on her shakedown through the European canals and rivers. The weather (in May) was fine, and the whole shakedown was a very successful venture.

+ Current Condition - Major Refit/Rebuild Required

As mentioned in the 1965 Yachting Magazine article, this gorgeous Feadship was originally launched as EXACT in 1964 and specially designed to be the committee yacht for the 1964 America's Cup race. She was later named ANOATOK where she was lovingly owned by the same family for 22 years. She is well know having cruised extensively along the Eastern Seaboard, Gulf of Mexico and throughout the Caribbean.

She is now available for sale for the new owner to continue the refit & restore her to the grace and elegance she deserves. Currently all of the carpeting has been removed and some cabinetry and floorboards in the lower cabins are up to access the inside hull plating for inspection.

It has been estimated that at least 1/3 of the bottom needs re-plating. The bow area in particular needs a major amount of frames and plate work. The hull will need to be partially restored on location so she can float and be transported to a facility for refit

The deck is also in need or replacement and water has leaked within forward in the dinning room and crew areas.

This is a mechanically sound vessel having regular maintenance but she requires some attention to the hull plating and pipe work as would be expected in a vessel of this vintage.

She is currently out of the water at Bradford Marine Bahamas and easily inspected.

In order to properly gauge the condition of the yacht I looked to the advise & guidance from Lody Reimersma of Lotronics, Netherlands whose team focuses on classic Feadship's of the Heritage Fleet having completed impressive refit projects such as OLYMPIA.

Lody inspected the yacht for a potential buyer and has over 400+ additional pictures & video that can be shared with a potential Buyer. His opinion is that total cost for the refit would be approximately 3.5-4m EURO. The hull alone will require an estimated 7,500 man hours and 6-8 months to rebuild costing roughly 500,000 EURO.

Transport to the Netherlands would be roughly 120,000 EURO and we have been in contact with a transport company specializing in yacht transport for a vessel in this condition.

There is already a complete team in place at Lotronics who can finish the refit, and work can also be coordinated with Feadship Makkum and Aalsmeer.

I welcome a conversation with any serious buyer or broker who could be interested in this project. We have additional pictures of the interior, exterior, machine spaces and original drawings that are available upon request.

+ Inspection made May 16, 2015

On May 16th, 2015 a personal inspection was made onboard. Over 200 pictures were taken documenting her current condition both on the interior, exterior, hull, flybridge, engine room and running gear.

These pictures are available upon request and I am happy to discuss the overall condition and requirements of the rebuild.

This classic canoe stern Feadship offers excellent potential. Plate work on the hull is required prior to relocating her.

Inspection made May 16, 2015

On May 16th, 2015 a personal inspection was made onboard. Over 200 pictures were taken documenting her current condition both on the interior, exterior, hull, flybridge, engine room and running gear.

These pictures are available upon request and I am happy to discuss the overall condition and requirements of the rebuild.

This classic canoe stern Feadship offers excellent potential. Plate work on the hull is required prior to relocating her.

Broker's comments.

Haddock was built in 1962 by De Vries Aalsmeer (Feadship) under building number 569. She had a major refit in 2007/2008. She is a perfect mid sized long range classic cruising vessel. She combines a beautiful classical design with a practical use for 7 guests in three cabins and is all combined with the pedigree of Feadship and Vosper Fin stabilizers.

canoe stern yachts for sale

Classic 26m Feadship yacht Monara newly for sale

The 25.8-metre classic Monara is newly listed for sale with Ed Cavendish and Ed Dickinson of Northrop & Johnson.

Built from steel by Feadship De Vries in 1969, the canoe stern motor yacht underwent a rebuild in 2016 at Feadship with Kees van den Hoek and Feadship responsible for the redesign. She has completed her five-year annual inspection with Malta Commercial, classed until 2027, and also benefits from a Spanish charter licence.

Monara has an illustrious history, once owned by a Milanese banking family, an English Lord and has welcomed Spanish royalty aboard.

The yacht's interior ambience is light, open and airy. All the windows in the lounge and portholes in the cabins can be opened, while the varnished teak has been replaced with dark-stained oak. Her main saloon offers an L-shaped settee situated opposite a full-length cabinet that houses a built-in pop-up TV.

A unique feature of Monara is a triple-glazed glass panel on the floor of the saloon that provides visibility of the restored Gardner main engines. Her galley is well-equipped and features a "Dutch door" that opens directly to the main deck. Aft to starboard are stairs leading to the guest cabins with access to the master cabin forward.

Monara accommodates eight guests in four refined cabins. The master suite is queen-size with a built-in desk, a settee, ample drawer storage and a large walk-in wardrobe. Below deck and aft is the VIP cabin with an en-suite bathroom. Midships are two more guest cabins, with a shared bathroom, each cabin easily transformed into either twin or double configuration. LED TVs are hidden behind one-way mirrors, out of sight when not in use.

The Feadship's exterior features classic lines, a trademark clipper bow and a canoe stern. Her aft deck is a beautiful covered space with comfortable seating for 12 around an extendable teak-varnished wood table. Her large sundeck is supported by slim, slanting steel posts, which barely disrupt the views. To the aft are sunbeds for up to 10 guests and at the centre is an L-shaped lounge sofa with a coffee table. The funnel houses a retractable gas barbeque, two fridges and an icemaker.

The 81GT classic yacht for sale has a leisurely top speed of 10 knots, a 1,900 nautical mile range and is fitted with zero-speed stabilizers, the latest technologies and AV equipment and stays virtually silent overnight courtesy of her electric battery autonomy. Guests can enjoy fresh air from the open portholes.

Monara is lying in Barcelona, Spain. Her asking price is upon application.

After a three week shakedown cruise to the Frisian Islands, then back through the lake country via canals to the Rhine at Arnhem, down the Rhine to Flushing, in Zealand, and then back to Rotterdam, she was shipped to the U.S by freighter Bartram, whose family ancestry goes back to a long tradition of New England seafarers and ship owners, is a former commodore of the New York Yacht Club, who has owned a succession of powerboats, motorsailers, and auxiliaries.

His opinion is that total cost for the refit would be approximately €8m+ EURO.

SULTANA is a striking example of a classic canoe stern Feadship that has been impeccably maintained. In 2012, the motor yacht completed a substantial refit to bring her back to her former glory. The luxury motor yacht’s interior spaces are warm and inviting, showcasing a fresh, contemporary styling. Adorned with muted soft greys and vibrant walnut panels, SULTANA’s interior spaces will make you feel right at home. Each stateroom is equipped with state-of-the-art entertainment systems, which appear as mirrors unless switched on. Additionally, the entertainment systems are linked to the deck and underwater cameras allowing guests to lay in bed and enjoy the surroundings above and below the waterline.

The motor yacht’s vast outdoor living areas are the perfect areas to enjoy the best of the on-water lifestyle. Spanning from atop the pilothouse to the stern of the yacht, SULTANA’s generous sundeck is ideal for relaxing and entertaining. The space showcases sunpads, comfortable loungers and a barbecue. Introduction.

Together with her twin sister (M/Y Monara), M/Y Sultana was built at the Feadship yard of De Vries in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands. Launched at the beginning of the “Italian affair” that saw the collaboration between Feadship and Carlo Riva for the build of the Caravelle Series, M/Y Monara and M/Y Sultana (originally M/Y Din Dina) were delivered to their Italian Owners in 1969. The current owner with his highly experienced project manager discovered the yacht abandoned in a French yard in 2007. Despite being in a poor condition with an almost empty hull, the owner’s team fell in love with her classic lines, which are so typical of a Feadship. The major rebuild of the M/Y Sultana was successfully completed in summer 2012 at Feadship’s yard in Makkum. The extensive project was carried by the dedicated Feadship refit department in close cooperation with the owner’s team. It reinforces the priceless value of having a Feadship refitted by Feadship itself in terms of both the inherent quality and preservation of Feadship brand status. Since completing the rebuild, M/Y Sultana has been maintained to an excellent standard and has proven to be one of the most successful classic yachts on the charter market today.

Welded steel hull and superstructure. The wheelhouse roof, mast, funnel and upper sun deck is aluminum and composite. Main and upper decks are teak laid over steel with epoxy treated plywood underground. Repaint completed in Winter 2018.

Sultana’s classic canoe stern offers an aft deck under the extended top deck which includes a built-in U-shaped settee aft that will accommodate 12 around an extendable teak varnished wood table. In addition, there are five teak chairs, an icemaker and drinks fridge.

The upper deck has a large 10-person aft sun bed featuring an integrated table that can be raised to transform into a dining / lounge seating. The centre of the upper deck has an L shaped lounge sofa with coffee table and 2 fauteuils. Forward, above the wheel house is a further 8-person sun bed with seating. The chimney houses a retractable gas Barbeque, 2 fridges, one icemaker and a wetpoint with hot/cold water. The tab acts also as a shower. The upper deck Sonos music system consists of 8x 250-watt speakers and a built in 1000 watts subwoofer. The sundeck is covered with high tension “shade sails”. These sails can be adapted to the amount of shade required. The supports for the shade sails have a built in “mist” system and LED directional spots which illuminates indirectly the shade sails at night.

Step through the automatic opening teak door into a large salon finished in walnut and upholstery. An “L” shaped settee is to port and opposite is a full-length cabinet with including a built-in pop-up Samsung LED TV (with PC based entertainment center), an icemaker and drinks fridge to serve the aft deck and salon.  The stairs to the guest cabins are forward to starboard.  Further forward on the port side is the dining area which features a leather dining table that sits 8. The salon has a glass panel in the floor to show the immaculately restored Gardner main engines. The engine room lighting is adapted to offer “ambiance” light in the evenings into the salon.

Pilot House

The pilot house can be accessed through the salon, and through two “Dutch doors” either side which can provide access to the main deck. The pilot house also offers a second salon with 2 raised L shaped settees and tables, allowing full panoramic views. The settees can be coupled to extend the seating from 6 to 8 person. All bridge and navigation equipment can be electrically lowered to completely hide all controls and navigation systems. The extensive rebuild transformed the pilothouse in a neat and clean area leaving whilst still boasting the original (restored) steering wheel, engine controls and compass.

Opposite the dining table on starboard is the semi-open galley with a 4-plate gas cooker, oven/microwave, dishwasher and large fridge. The galley also has a “Dutch door” that can open directly to the main deck. The worktop is finished in black granite and brushed stainless steel.

Accomodations

Sleeps 8 in four guest cabins plus 4 crew in two cabins.

Master Cabin :

The master cabin is forward and has a queen size bed, a built-in walnut desk, settee, large drawers featuring a locker cabinet and 1 large walk in wardrobe. 4 large hull windows flood the cabin with natural light and stunning sea views. The large owner’s bathroom is finished in Carrera marble and walnut. The ensuite offers a large 2-person Jacuzzi and a large hull window with sea views from the Jacuzzi. There is a separate “rain” shower and toilet. As with all other cabins, the LED tv is hidden behind a one-way mirror, leaving it completely out of sight when switched off. The master cabin also has a superior AV system, with a  subwoofer hidden under the bed, producing excellent quality noise and vibration when watching a movie or listening to music. Music is also available in the bathroom.

VIP & Guests Cabins :

Below deck and aft, is the VIP cabin with ensuite bathroom / toilet finished in Carrera marble and walnut. Down the same staircase you will find two further guest cabins with a shared bathroom / toilet midships. Both guest cabins can be quickly transformed into either two single or double beds. LED tv’s are hidden behind one-way mirrors, leaving them completely out of sight when switched off.

Crew quarters :

The crew cabins are accessed through the foredeck “doghouse”. There are 2 crew cabins with 2 superposed beds in each cabin. The port cabin has an upper bed that can be extended to provide a double bed. There is a large crew shower and toilet, with ample storage.

Below the crew quarters is a large storage area. This space contains a large washing machine, heat pump silent drying machine, 3 separate 50 ltrs freezers, an additional 110 ltrs fridge and lots of storage space for food, drinks etc.

M/Y Sultana has a “Williams” jet tender and a “Yamaha” waverunner stowed on the foredeck. The jet tender allows to enter shallow waters and beaching due to the lack of a propeller and is therefore safe for swimmers too. The foredeck was designed to ensure that these tenders use the same center mounted deck crane, allowing (in most circumstances) to be launched while moored in port.

Entertainment System

All cabins and the salon are equipped with a PC based entertainment system. As well as movies, tv and music, the system allows guests and crew to view the mast, aft deck camera’s and the special stern and bow underwater cameras. The salon, pilot house, aft deck and upper deck are equipped with a “Sonos” sound system. This system allows remote control by either the Sonos controller, or any PC, Mac, tablet or smart phone. All areas can play synchronized music, or separate music choices and volumes. There is in addition an Ipod docking station in salon.

Technical System

All technical systems are concentrated in the engine room. The Waste tank, boilers, pumps, hydraulic power packs are fully rebuilt in 2012. By keeping all systems in the engine, it has reduced the interior noise and prevents any guest spaces being disturbed should a fault arise.

Toilet System

A “Gravity” based sewage system for the toilets allows for “silent” flushing. This system does not have any noise producing pumps or macerators in or under the cabins.

Electric System

A total of 8000 amps maintenance free gel batteries provides at least 8 hours of autonomous power for all systems. This includes power for all 220 and 380 volts consumers including air- conditioning, pumps, lighting etc All lighting is LED and dimmable. Using LED reduces the power consumption with 75% for lighting. This system allows complete “silent” running while at anchor, or in port without shore power. While underway on either one or two Gardner main engines, each main engine provides ample charging power to maintain/charge the batteries and still have all systems running. The use of the auxiliary Caterpillar generator is not needed while cruising.

Heat Recovery

All waste heat for cooling the main engines or generator is reused for heating the warm water supply. Pre-heating, or maintaining operation temperature for the main engines is taken from the generator’s cooling system, electric or diesel burner.

Fuel Economy

M/Y Sultana’s propulsion, hull design and engines allow for a low fuel consumption. With the correct conditions, guests enjoy a reduction of around 30% less than a conventional yacht of this size. Tests showed an average consumption of 33 litres per hour total both engines running.

Engine Room

The engine room was completely rebuilt with new systems in during the 2012 refit.  The main engines had a full 2012 rebuild, repainted with special 2 component paint, chromed details and polished copper piping. The engine room layout allows easy access to all systems, ensuring reduced maintenance and repair costs. There is full electronic main engine monitoring through a NMEA 2000 system. There are sensors for measuring each cylinder exhaust temperature, 2 point water temperature, rpm sensors for prop shafts and engines to allow precise synchronizing. Vacuum meters on all fuel filters, allowing replacement only when needed. Temperature regulated ventilation to reduce power consumption. Maintenance free prop shaft stuffing boxes. Full toolkit, including Gardner special tools and workbench.

Reliability

M/Y Sultana was rebuilt with all modern systems, should there be a mayor power/electronics failure, her rebuild ensures that she can still run in all circumstances. The main engines can be manually started, and power will then be generated with one or all 4 alternators of 400 amps capacity each. The engine controls are 100% mechanically operated, no electric or hydraulic power required. Each engine still has mechanical temperature and oil pressure gauges fitted. Fuel supply can be rapidly chosen for each engine from either the forward or aft tanks, should the unfortunate instance that one of the tanks is contaminated. There are 3 ways to pump the bilges; fire pump, regular bilge pump or main engine seawater pump. The AC power can be supplied directly from shore or generator, should there be an issue with any of the 3 Victron converters.

History - yachting magazine (march 1965).

Current Condition - Major Refit/Rebuild Required
