Happy Go takes Line Honours in 2024 Rolex China Sea Race
HONG KONG , March 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The fierce battle for Line Honours in the Rolex China Sea Race between defending Line Honours winner Standard Insurance Centennial V and Happy Go was finally settled in the early hours of the morning today when Happy Go edged out her rival by five minutes. It was as nail-biting a finish as one could ever have with close, competitive racing. It was at around 0315hrs that Happy Go edged in front and finally at 05hr20m53s, Nie Hua's Happy Go crossed the finish line to claim Line Honours, shaving more than 20 hours off their elapsed time from 2023.
Skipper Jono Rankine said "The battle with Centennial V was close the whole race. We were aware of them the whole way along the racecourse. We were always checking to see who was close to the finish line and then obviously right at the end we could see them right the way through, firstly on AIS and seeing their lights at night. It was pretty exciting and there were a few lead changes. One moment they were ahead, another moment we were ahead and then the next moment we were sitting in a wind hole and not moving and they were ghosting past us. Yeah, it was exciting and a fun way to win the race."
Jono explained that one of biggest tactical decisions was made ahead of the race when they dropped four people from the crew, "it made the boat a lot lighter and easier to sail and it definitely made the race more challenging. We were expecting the race to be a lot longer but we knew it was going to be light winds and not super demanding so we knew we could handle it with nine people. "
Ernesto Echauz's Standard Insurance Centennial V finished only five minutes behind Happy Go . Ernesto said "This was the most exciting Rolex China Sea Race that I have ever experienced. It was so exciting from the start on the first day and all the way up to the finish. Happy Go did very well. What was so nice was that we were competing with each other, especially on the last day up to the end. I am very proud of my team and proud of the other competitors as they are very competitive." Shortly after, and showing his sportsmanship, Ernesto went to visit Happy Go to congratulate them on their win.
With the Line Honours settled and as the rest of the fleet converges on Subic Bay, all eyes are on who will take IRC Overall. A thrilling battle is developing for the IRC Overall leaderboard with boats swapping positions often. Seawolf, Zesst, A Plastic Ocean and Whiskey Jack have all to play for. Happy Go is currently sitting at the top in IRC overall but will have to wait it out to see whether the other boats still racing can beat her time in the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's 565 nautical mile race. The last time a boat won Line Honours and IRC Overall was Neil Pryde on HiFi in 2010.
As of HK Time 1600hrs, A Plastic Ocean is leading in IRC Racer 2, Zesst leads IRC Racer 3 and Rampage008 is looking strong for the Cruiser division. Monnblue2 and Parnassus are having another nail-biting race with Moonblue2 in front. Blowers Daughter is leading in PHS.

Rolex China Sea Race 2024 sets sail on March 27
The 31st Rolex China Sea Race, organised by the Hong Kong Royal Yacht Club, officially commences this year on March 27.
Recognized as the oldest and most prestigious blue-water race in Asia, the China Sea Race was first inaugurated in 1962 when three yachts from the Hong Kong Royal Yacht Club embarked on a 600-mile journey from Hong kong to Coregidor Island in Manila Bay following the wake of ancient trade routes. With no radios on board the yachts, Chris von Sydow’s Reverie finished in six days of racing to discover there that it had won. From then on, The China Sea Race was held as a biennial event, and was officially recognized by the Royal Ocean Racing club in 1972.
This year sees an international fleet of 23 boats from Hong Kong, the Philippines, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Australia, and China. Ones to watch include the 2023 Overall winner, Whiskey Jack, and Ernesto Echauz’s Standard Insurance Centennial 5 which was crowned 2023 Line Honours Winner. The race starts in the city at Hong Kong’s iconic Victoria Harbour, and ventures 565 nautical miles across the South China Sea to Subic Bay in the Philippines. With different classes of boats competing, handicaps are given to balance out the competition, with newer and better-equipped boats needing to achieve a better time to place higher in the standings.
Stay tuned for more coverage as we draw closer to the race date. Additional details can be found on the official Rolex China Sea Race website .

Hong Kong to Vietnam Race 2023
The Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, Asia’s longest Category One offshore race which takes competitors 673nm from Hong Kong to the pleasant coastal city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, is back after a hiatus of four years due to the Covid pandemic.
Today marks 100 days until the 10th edition of the Race, which starts on 24 and 25 October 2023.
This blast across the South China Sea is recognised as a qualifier for the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race. It was first run in 1996 and then regularly since 2004. The 2019 edition attracted a slew of international entries hailing from Great Britain, Italy, Singapore and the United States. The focal point was the battle for Multihull Line Honours between two racing trimarans; Italian Maserati Multi70 and Hong Kong entry SHK Scallywag/Fuku. Meitatsu Fukumoto and Seng Huang Lee’s SHK Scallywag Fuku took the win and set a new Multihull Race Record of 30h 09m 27s, just under two hours ahead of Maserati.
The current Monohull Race Record of 41h 30m 20s was also set in 2019 by professionally crewed Lucky, a US based J/V Maxi 72 skippered by Bryon Ehrhart, beating the previous race record of 42h 17m 24s set by Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin 100 in 2015.
Veteran race participant Geoff Hill said “I think the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race is one of the most iconic races in Asia, and certainly one of the best that I do.” The Hong Kong to Vietnam Race should be on every sailor’s bucket list along with the RHKYC’s Club’s flagship offshore, the Rolex China Sea Race.

It is a challenging, predominantly downwind, 673nm fast passage to Nha Trang, on the south-eastern coast of Vietnam - the race is recognised as a qualifying race for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
The Race was first run in 1996 and then regularly since 2004. Both the monohull and multihull race records were broken in the 2019 edition of the race with Bryon Ehrhart's Lucky setting a new monohull race record of 41h 30m 20s and Meitatsu Fukumoto / Seng Huang Lee's SHK Scallywag Fuku settng a new multihull race record of 30h 09m 27s.
A popular tourist destination in its own right, Nha Trang also offers a great revictualling point for boats intending to continue on to other seasonal sailing events in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Australia.

ABOUT THE RACE 关于比赛
This 565nm Category 1 Offshore Race is run under the auspices of RORC, and takes competitors from Hong Kong, China to Subic Bay in the Philippines.
On 7 April 1962, three yachts from RHKYC, one from Manila and one from Japan crossed the line at the start of the first China Sea Race. The yachts were escorted over the first 100 miles of their 600nm journey by two minesweepers of the Hong Kong Royal Naval Reserve.
The finish was off Corregidor Island, crossing a line formed by vessels of the Philippines Navy, to be met by members of the Manila Yacht Club who had co-operated most generously with the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in all the arrangements. Due to no radios being on board the yachts, Chris von Sydow's Reverie crossed the finish line after six days' racing to find out that they were in first place.
The China Sea Race was subsequently held as a biennial event. In 1964 it attracted 12 entries and in 1966, 13, including the famous ketch Stormvogel. With each successive race, the event grew bigger. In 1968, it was included for the first time in the newly organised World Ocean Racing Championships and in 1972 it was officially recognised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club.
Since then it has continued to attract interest and, as an undisputed Asian blue-water classic, has served to draw the attention of the international yachting fraternity to Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. In the 2018 edition, Karl Kwok broke the race and multihull record on his MOD Beau Geste with an elapsed time of 38h 30m 07s. The Monohull record is held by RP66 Alive with an elapsed time of 47h 31m 08s.

E1 reveals ‘Race to Hong Kong’
- December 28, 2023
Hong Kong has signed up to host the season finale of the world’s first all-electric race boat championship in 2024, 2025 and 2026.

The UIM E1 World Championship has revealed a seven-event schedule for its first series in 2024, with Hong Kong hosting the concluding event from November 9-10 and signing up to also host the season finale of the second and third seasons in 2025 and 2026.
The official standings will be known as the ‘Race to Hong Kong’ as the 2024 championship concludes in a city that has also hosted Formula E, the electric race car series inaugurated by E1 co-founder Alejandro Agag.
Kevin Yeung, the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, said: “We are most excited to see the debut of UIM E1 World Championship in 2024 and are proud that Hong Kong will host the grand finale of the first three seasons.
“It will be the only East Asian host city in the inaugural season, highlighting Hong Kong’s reputation as a world-renowned events capital and one of the best destinations for tourists around the world.”
E1 World Championship 2024 schedule
The 2024 season starts in Saudi Arabia as Jeddah hosts the first weekend event from February 2-3. Over three months later, the series resumes with five events in Europe from May to September, taking in Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Monaco and the Netherlands.
The European swing kicks off in the Venetian lagoon from May 11-12, moves to Puerto Banus on the Costa Del Sol from June 1-2 and then heads to the ‘gateway to the Alps’ in Geneva for lake racing from June 29-30.
The series then visits Monaco from July 26-27 and Rotterdam from September 7-8, as the Dutch city welcomes back the Racebirds after hosting a test event last September. The 2024 tour then heads east to Asia for the season finale in Hong Kong.
The teams will compete in all-electric Racebirds
Rodi Basso, co-founder and CEO of E1, said: “I share the pride of everyone at E1 as we announce this spectacular calendar of events for our first season. These cities are all world renowned for their cultural, touristic and sporting offerings and will each provide our fans with a unique and unforgettable experience.
“Our race locations not only provide a stunning backdrop for our Racebirds but align with our goals of improving the ecosystems in which we race, and accelerating marine electrification.”
As of late December, eight teams had been announced with seven headed by sporting and entertainment celebrities: Tom Brady (American football), Rafa Nadal (tennis), Virat Kohli (cricket), Didier Drogba (football) and Sergio Pérez (F1), Steve Aoki (DJ) and Marc Anthony (singer) . Up to 10 teams will compete in the inaugural E1 championship, with each choosing two pilots to share driving duties.
Alejandro Agag, co-founder and Chairman of E1, said: “The list of names in the season one calendar shows the immense confidence our city stakeholders have in E1 before the first race has even started and there’s still so much more to come from the championship.”

Fleet battles through first night of the Rolex China Sea Race 2024
HONG KONG , March 28, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The fleet enjoyed a fast-reaching leg during the first night of the Rolex China Sea Race thanks to an easterly airstream which stayed with competitors all the way up to 0700hrs at which time the fleet came to a halt and parked up for at least an hour.
Happy Go and Standard Insurance Centennial V have been battling hard from the start, on the hunt for Line Honours. Happy Go sailed further south of the rhumb line whilst 2023 Line Honours winner Standard Insurance Centennial V is using a different approach to last year’s, where they stayed closer to rhumb line. Behind the front two, Seawolf is having her own competition with rival Standard Insurance Centennial III .
The two IRC Premier boats, Thomas Attenborough’s Parnassus and Peter Churchouse’s Moonblue2 were also sailing fast behind the contenders in IRC Race 0, while enjoying their own private race.
The Two-Handed Division is being led by A Plastic Ocean , sailed by the father and son duo Philippe and Cosmas Grelon. In second place is Carl Wilkinson and Patrick M Harmon’s Lisa Elaine with Daybreak chasing from behind.
As a new entry to Double-handed division, it seems owner Carl Wilkinson isn’t busy enough sailing – not only has he only one other crewmember to share tasks with, they are also on a mission to provide updates to a Hong Kong local school during their journey in order to inspire them and to get them interested in the sport and to encourage them to also go for their dreams.
In the battle for IRC Racer 2, Race Chairman Nicolas Cohen-Addad’s Jinn is staying strong and over in IRC Racer 3, Zesst skippered by Henning Mueller is enjoying an early lead in front of last year’s Overall winner Whiskey Jack .
For the PHS division, both first-time entries in the Rolex China Sea Race, Bradly Wilkin’s Blowers Daughter and Sunny Leung / Alex Yu’s Jibulai are fighting hard at the back, trading positions every few hours.
Speaking for the Race ahead, Lisa Elaine said “After an exciting first 20 hours where we rode the strong easterly, and set a new record for nautical miles sailed for Lisa Elaine and managed to work our way up the fleet, we’re now trying different tactics with Jinn and Tong Ran to find a good breeze line and maintain boat speed. The next 12 hours will be key to see if we can keep on the edge of any pressure as we work our way along the rhumb line.”
When the race turns into the second night, the fight for Line Honours and Overall is expected to become even more fierce as the sailors consider their strategy and tactics as winds are predicted to weaken.
