Our race events combine high-speed, free-to-watch sport and family entertainment, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators and millions of television viewers around the world, also playing a valuable role as an effective destination marketing tool. By creating high caliber events, we generate a significant level of inward economic investment at host venues, together with the commercial platform created for sponsors, partners and the wider marine industry.

Media and broadcast relationships play a key role in enhancing our international presence, delivering exposure for venues and commercial partners, and building the foundations for a commercially viable, credible and global marine motorsport platform.

P1 Offshore

This increasingly important brand within the P1 family encompasses the APBA offshore national championship series, with P1 having been granted by the APBA exclusive worldwide rights to film and distribute its offshore events for the next five years. At all race events, P1 will produce a one-hour television highlights show, featuring Class 1 racing and other APBA classes.

P1 Jetcross

Attracting a younger demographic, P1 Jetcross is considered by many to be the equivalent of motocross on water, with custom designed race hulls and highly tuned engines to power themselves around close-to-shore technical courses.

P1 Superstock

When competitors are racing with the same boat, same engine, and same performance the only difference between winning and losing is the crew. P1 SuperStock lets the pilots battle it out on the water through every turn and every wave jump. It’s an acid test of a team’s ability to command the boat in challenging conditions.

Class One racing is the highest class of powerboat racing in the world where boats can reach speeds in excess of 160mph, attracting teams from the United States, Dubai and Australia. Powerboat P1 promotes the APBA Offshore Championship, a six-venue, multiclass race series.

P1 AquaX is the fastest growing watercraft race series in the world. It prides itself on attracting the best riders and the fastest off-the-shelf watercraft with speeds in excess of 80mph. Its rapid growth is owed to a simple, accessible yet challenging race format that appeals to today’s personal watercraft users.

In September 2010, P1 launched a registered charity which has as its principal objective the promotion of the conservation, protection and improvement of the marine and coastal environment. The Foundation focuses on conservation by supporting research, raising awareness of serious threats to the oceans and creating selected partnerships.

POWERBOAT P1 STRENGTHENS PRESENCE IN NORTH AMERICA

January 18, 2010, London: London-based, Powerboat P1 Management Ltd. announced today it plans to export its successful powerboat racing series to the United States with the formation of a North American subsidiary, Powerboat P1 USA.

"The United States market is critical to any multi-national company involved in motorsports marketing," said Asif Rangoonwala, Chairman of Powerboat P1. "We view participation in the USA as an essential element in our growth as a World Championship and as a business."

Powerboat P1 has spent the last two years in the US market developing awareness of the unique opportunities and format provided by Powerboat P1. Series organizers have also been researching possible racing venues to add to the Powerboat P1 World Championship, which has held events on three continents, all sanctioned by the international governing body, the Union Internationiale Motonautique (UIM).

With the recent evolution of powerboat racing in the USA, Powerboat P1 determined that its considerable resources and unique racing format could best be used to help refine the sport in North America, sanctioning with the USA representative to the UIM, the American Powerboat Association (APBA).

"The APBA represents 107 years of powerboat racing heritage, and is the oldest powerboat federation in the UIM," said Rangoonwala. "The APBA provides a high level of credibility to the sport, and we look forward to producing world class events with its sanctioning."

In December, APBA President, Mark Weber, hosted a meeting at the APBA headquarters in Eastpointe, MI, where he invited all of the US organizations to attend and discuss the future of the sport. The outcome was a positive exchange, where APBA expressed its desire to embrace offshore racing and bring the sport back together under a common national and internationally-recognized entity.

A central theme of the meeting included a sentiment that the autonomy and individual identities of the current racing series are important to maintain. However, the credibility and growth of the sport would still rely on a single governing body that can offer prestige and heritage, internationally-recognized records and titles, as well as APBA "Hall of Champions" recognition and speed record validation. Due to the size of the US market, the existing regional-based series' could operate under a single national authority [APBA], just as the individual national federations operate with the UIM as the international authority.

The Powerboat P1 USA events will build on the very effective "power to weight ratio" format that has been utilized throughout the European series. Initial plans for the P1 USA series include three v-bottom classes. Powerboat P1 USA would then represent a sub-set of other existing classes offered within the APBA offshore category, focusing on a limited number of classes for the Powerboat P1 USA Continental Championship.

The initial two-year plan includes intentions to work with the existing organizations in 2010 to more fully develop their regional races, laying the groundwork for joint productions of key race events in 2011. Powerboat P1 USA will also work on a focused marketing and promotional campaign to inform potential teams, venues and sponsors of the opportunities and value that a Powerboat P1 event generates on a global scale; but, stresses that it is striving for strong relationships with all of the current racing organizations and event producers.

"Powerboat P1 brings a respected level of professionalism to a series within the APBA," said Weber. "As an APBA sanctioned series, it will enhance the event value to local producers and to our current organizations."

"With strong regional organizations running their local series and hosting specific P1 USA series events, there's an opportunity for a genuine unification of the sport here that the vast majority of the racers support," said Powerboat P1 USA Director of North American Operations, Martin Sanborn. "APBA has been the backbone of powerboating in the US for over 100 years, and it represents the credibility and consistency that offshore powerboat racing needs to finally bring the sport together with common purpose and internationally-compatible rules," he added.

Former Visit St. Pete/Clearwater official will lead Powerboat P1 U.S. operations

  • Tracey McManus Times staff

Longtime Pinellas County tourism and sports executive Tim Ramsberger has taken over U.S. operations of international marine motorsport promoter Powerboat P1 Management, which hosts the Powerboat Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

The United Kingdom-based Powerboat P1 announced on Wednesday Ramsberger will work as president and chief executive of its United States operation. Ramsberger served as chief operating officer of Visit St. Pete/Clearwater since 2016 and stepped down from the agency on Sept. 3.

“I was approached about this opportunity and the more I looked at it the more I felt it was something that really excited me,” Ramsberger said. “It’s something that I felt would really bode well to use the experience and skill set that I have developed over the past several years doing sports and events.”

Ramsberger departs Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, Pinellas County’s tourism agency, as the destination is not only rebounding from the coronavirus pandemic but breaking records. Pinellas collected $8.27 million in tourist development tax in June, which is a 46 percent increase from June 2019, a record setting year.

Visit St. Pete/Clearwater CEO and President Steve Hayes said staff is absorbing duties of Ramsberger’s former position until the agency can hire a new COO.

Ramsberger, who will work remotely from his home in Treasure Island, will be responsible for running Poweboat P1′s commercial actives, offshore racing and Aquax jet ski events, and digital activities. That includes the Powerboat Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, which took place earlier this month near the St. Pete Pier following years running in St. Pete Beach.

“I think it’s got great potential, it’s a near perfect lifestyle event for our destination because it combines the beauty of our waterfront, it’s great for television, it’s great for spectators, it’s fun, it’s fast, it’s exciting,” he said of the St. Pete race.

Prior to his work with Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, Ramsberger spent a decade leading the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. He also worked for Disney Sports, FIFA World Cup, Olympic Organizing Committee, Andretti Sports Marketing and Indy Car.

6-venue World Championship in the United States will build towards an international series in 2024.

Fleet of 8 class 1 boats expected to compete in this season’s championship., new event in the city of sheboygan on lake michigan with season finale in miami..

Powerboat P1 has today announced the UIM Class 1 World Championship race calendar for the 2023 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin for the first time and returning to favourite locations in Florida and Indiana. A fleet of eight Class 1 boats is expected to compete in the six-venue championship from May through to September.

powerboat p1 logo

In October 2020, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) assigned to Powerboat P1 the international rights to Class 1 racing in an exclusive ten-year agreement that includes organisational and promotion rights to the world championship. However, with the pandemic seriously impacting the 2021 season by preventing overseas teams from traveling to the United States, it wasn’t until this year that P1 was able to action its plans to attract more race teams and grow the series through social media and building the worldwide television audience.

Racing will kick off at Cocoa Beach on Florida’s Atlantic Coast in late May, before moving to the Gulf Coast at the end of June when the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix will celebrate its 38 th  anniversary. In August the series will head north to Indiana for the Michigan City Great Lakes Grand Prix, and a new event in the Wisconsin city of Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan will host the Mercury Racing MidWest Challenge.

Featuring the top categories of U.S. powerboat racing including Class 1, the three-day festival is expected to attract more than thirty teams to race along the Sheboygan waterfront. In early September the Class 1 fleet will be back on the Gulf Coast in St. Petersburg, and P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala is in advanced discussions to stage a season finale in Miami. “We raced in this iconic city in 2018 and returning this year with the Class 1 boats would create an outstanding climax to the 2023 championship,” said Rangoonwala.

powerboat p1 logo

“As we look ahead to the 2023 season, I can confirm that both the M CON Racing Team and Sudrheim Offshore Racing will be joining the series to give us an international field of eight boats with teams representing Australia, Sweden, Norway and, of course, the United States,” said P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala. “The M CON team will compete in a fully branded Monster Energy boat. This new canopied Skater 438 catamaran is the first purpose-built Class 1 boat for more than a decade. With Sudrheim Racing flying the flag for Norway next year, we can look forward to another Scandinavian team battling for the world title.”

powerboat p1 logo

This season’s championship will build towards an international race calendar in 2024 with host venues in Scandinavia and the Middle East being added to the schedule. In five years’ time, the key goal in P1’s development plan is to have twelve Class 1 teams racing at ten international venues. “Our live streaming this season will be significantly enhanced by the introduction of a new timing system which will show boat positions, distances between boats, speeds and lap times as live graphics,” explained Rangoonwala.

“We’re on an exciting journey and our mantra is to take UIM Class 1 back to the pinnacle of offshore racing,”

added Rangoonwala.
