RYA Commercial Endorsements

rya advanced powerboat commercial endorsement

If you are looking to work on small commercial vessels then you must commercially endorse your RYA qualification. There are two qualifications that you can commercially endorse, RYA powerboat level 2 & RYA advanced powerboat (with exam).

- rya powerboat level 2.

When commercially endorsed the powerboat level 2 will allow you to work on small commercial vessels under 10 metres in length and no more than 3 miles from shore during daylight hours.

- RYA ADVANCED POWERBOAT CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE (EXAM)

When commercially endorsed the advanced powerboat will allow you to work on small commercial vessels under 24 metres in length and no more than 20 miles from shore both during day and night.

As well as your RYA Powerboat Level 2 or Advanced Powerboat Qualification, you will need to complete the following courses:

- professional practice and responsibilities (ppr).

A compulsory online course for RYA Commercial Endorsement holders. No matter what your role on the water, we all have a duty of care to crew, passengers, and other water users, and you will be held to account if things go wrong.

- RYA SHORT RANGE RADIO (SRC/VHF) COURSES

When using radios on the water the RYA SRC/VHF radio course will teach you everything you need to know about protocol and how to use the the radios. This specialist course is run over 1 day and includes an exam at the end which you can book directly with the RYA (just follow the instructions sent to you when booking the course). Using specifically adapted radios in the classroom environment gives the perfect start to understanding how the radios work and can be used.

- RYA/MCA SEA SURVIVAL COURSES

This 1-day Sea Survival Course will prepare students for all eventualities at sea and is vital for yachtsman, crews, skippers and power boaters of all types. This training course concentrates on sea survival for professional crews, commercial operators and offshore race crews. The RYA Sea Survival Course covers essential survival techniques including what to do if the worst happens and you have to abandon your boat or ship. RYA/MCA Sea Survival is also day 1 of the 2 day ISAF Offshore Safety Crew Course, which is required for crews racing offshore in ISAF races.

- RYA/MCA FIRST AID COURSES

The courses cover areas including drowning, cold water shock, sea sickness, dehydration and hypothermia. They are only one-day courses but could save yours or a crew members life. These courses are aimed at anyone who gets afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages. Immediate action in an emergency at sea can save lives.

Become 'commercially endorsed'.

So, what is a Commercial Endorsement?

You may have completed a course such as a Level 2 or Advanced Powerboat, which is great to improve your skills, but to work on a boat that isn't operating just for pleasure, you need to be commercially endorsed. This essentially means you meet a certain standard. This standard is laid down by the MCA and RYA.

Any boat that is being used for anything other than the private use of the owner, or a club, is said to be a commercial vessel. There are some other exceptions, but basically if you are earning money or the boat is earning money- its probably a commercial vessel and you may need to have an endorsement.

To get yourself commercially endorsed, you will need the following-

A Qualification

The following certificates can receive the standard commercial endorsement:

Course completion certificates:

-RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling Certificate

-RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate (only if issued before 1 January 2005)

-RYA Day Skipper practical course completion certificate supported by a Day Skipper shorebased course completion certificate

Certificates of competence:

-RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence

-RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence

-RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence

-RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence

Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate

An online course outlining the requirements of commercial vessels. This is available through us

An ML5 or ENG1 Medical

The ML5 medical can be completed by most GPs, just download this form and speak to your doctor. The ENG1 has to be completed by a doctor approved by the MCA. This level of medical is generally only required by those wishing to work further offshore.

Sea Survival Certificate

This course can be taken through us, see the Sea Survival page for more details.

RYA Marine Radio SRC Certificate or other acceptable GMDSS Marine Radio Operator's Certificate.

This course can be taken through us, see the VHF/SRC page for more details.

Once you have completed the above courses, you can apply to have your certificate commercially endorsed by completing the form on the following link.

If you need any more guidance about which certificate you need, or any advice, please just let us know.

To ensure Conservation Voters for Idaho endorses the best possible conservation candidates, our volunteer Board of Directors with staff support conduct a multi-step review process and criteria for selection.

Candidates are evaluated along the following criteria: knowledge of conservation issues, potential effectiveness to advance conservation issues if/when elected to office and propensity to be a true champion on our issues. “Best” conservation candidates are not just those candidates who represent themselves as the most pro-environment, but who will best advance the effort to protect Idaho’s environment. As a bipartisan organization, we select candidates regardless of political party.

Our endorsement begins at the staff level where campaign staff distribute questionnaires to candidates across the state. All candidates are invited to participate in the process and fill out the questionnaire. Questionnaire responses are evaluated by our Endorsement Task Force, which is composed of select members of the Conservation Voters for Idaho Board of Directors and supported by staff. If the task force needs further clarification from the questionnaire responses, follow up activities occur which could include in-person interviews or reference checks.

Based on the questionnaire responses, the personal interview, candidate’s platforms on conservation issues and other criteria guidelines listed above, the Endorsement Task Force votes on their endorsement recommendations. Those approved recommendations are then taken to Conservation Voters for Idaho’s Board of Directors for a final vote.
