Cal 28-2 - Owners Group

  • Add to quote

I'm a new owner of a 1987 Cal 28-2 and haven't been able to find much as far as an owners group for this model. I'm having her relocated from Lake Lanier outside Atlanta to Lake Norman, just north of Charlotte, NC. Most of the posts I've found through Google are old and/or dead. eMail addresses are no longer good, links are dead, etc. My new boat is the shoal draft version of the C-28. I'd be interested in any facts, opinions, or otherwise on the performance differences between the two. I haven't seen that there's any difference in either PHRF or Portsmouth ratings based on the draft. Not sure if that means that the shallow draft makes up for time on the downwind legs or if there just weren't enough made to justify a rating. At any rate, I'd be interested in hearing from other owners of this model.

Don't know much about shoal draft version. Do you race yours? I'm racing mine this weekend in the PHRF New England Championships. Have you ever rebedded the stanchions? Need ideas on how to do this since there's no access to stanchion bolts. Hole saw? Chris Foley "Morning Star" Cal 28-2 Marblehead, MA

Chris - there's an access panel behind the setee cushions on my boat to get to the stanchions. I haven't looked at the plate but would think you'd be able to rebed them without having to take the stanchions loose. My last boat just had a stainless cover that went over and around the base where the bolt pierced the deck. I just had to unscrew that and lift it up, clean all the old sealant off, and rebed it. Hopefully it's that easy on the Cal. I haven't raced her yet. Just got her this summer and had to wait until mid July to get the mast stepped and rigged up. Our fall series is starting next month so I'll be interested to see how she does on the upwind legs. Had her out two weeks ago and hit 7.0 on the knot meter on a broad reach - so she will get up and go off the wind. Good luck in your race and on your maintenance. Bob Nolen 1987 Cal 28-2 New Name TBD (Currently Standfast)

The Cal 28-2 is a nice package, a smaller version of the 33 which was runnerup on my last buying list. PHRFNE doesn't have a Cal 28 SD rating, but the allowance for the 33 SD is 6 seconds, and I bet it would be the same. Not too many folks race the SD versions of boats if they can get ahold of a deep keel as credit allowances like six seconds don't come close to the actual perfoamance loss... PS - Chris, I'll look you up tomorrow night, I'm doing mainsheet on the Henderson 30 Wild Thing...

Chris - how did you do in your first race? So far I've been pleasantly surprised by the shoal draft performance. I've done two races on her and took 4th (out of 19) and 1st out of 13. She pointed as high as a J-24 last weekend, although I lost a bit more leeway than the J - but was parallel to the J's tack. How did the deep draft do? Were you able to take care of the stanchions? I haven't had any problem with leaks (yet) so would like to know if you found the source and fixed it. Love the boat! Perfect mix of performance and space for the family. We've done a couple of overnights as well, which we never could do on our old boat. Good luck!

I was looking for information on our new (to us) 1986 Cal 28 (deep draft) and came across your posts. Any links, information etc. on the boat would be appreciated. We sail out of Kent Island on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay across from Annapolis. Thanks! Greg

Greg - I've been really pleased with my 28 all around. I was concerned initially about the shoal draft and how it would effect performance, but in my little PHRF club, I posted a 1st, two 2nds, and a 5th (first race with the new boat). The deep draft probably points a degree higher than I can and doesn't slip off as much to leeward. But I've gotten to 7's on the knot meter on a close reach. Playing the traveller helps with the weather helm and I haven't had any spin outs from rounding up in a gust. Lake sailing here in NC you get a bit of every type of wind - often in the same outing. I've only found one link that's good for the 28-2. There's a lot out there on the 28 but the Mk2 was a short run and I'm not even sure how many they produced before they went BK. Here's a link to the measurements for the sail plan. Cal 28 Sailboat Cal Boats Jensen Marine Cal 28 Bill Lathrop Jack Jensen Good Old Boat It's got all the Cal's in there so be sure you pull up the 28-2. How are you liking your new boat so far?

Cal 28-2 Hi Gang, I'm another Cal 28-2 owner. I'm located in Connecticut and sail Long Island Sound and points east.. My racing days are mostly in the past, back when I was a partner on a Santana 30 that we raced extensively. I've had my 1896 Cal, Nauti-Dog, for 3 years now and I'm very happy with her performance. One thing she's missing though is a backstay adjuster. I'm getting ready to add one before the boat goes in the water in a few weeks. Anyone have any recommendations? (I wish there were more of us out there... I used to have a Tanzer 22 that had a HUGH owners group.) Anyhow, I'm leaning towards a Sailtec model 10 hydraulic unit (or maybe a model 8, have to go down to the yard and measure the pin dia tomorrow); or perhaps a simple Wichard non-hydraulic model which is not much more than a big turnbuckle with a wheel to adjust things on the fly. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Water heater for Cal 28-2 Chris, I'm sorry to say I don't know the original make/model. I need to replace mine this year too. If I work up the energy to pull the old one before Spring, I may be able to find that info. Maybe next weekend.. If you find out from someone else, please let me know. Thanks

Hi Guys, I bought one of these boats mid season (here in Maryland) and am pretty sure that my H2O heater is original (at least it looks so.) I don't know what the brand is at the moment but have plans to go to the boat this weekend and would be more than happy to snap a picture of the installation and info plate for you. Review of Cal 28

Basic specs..

The Cal 28 is equipped with a finn keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.37 - 1.47 meter (4.49 - 4.79 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an engine.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Cal 28 is about 125 kg/cm, alternatively 705 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 125 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 705 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 21m 2 (226 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

oprah winfrey weight loss special how to watch online

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Variety may receive an affiliate commission.

Following her exit from the board of WeightWatchers, Oprah Winfrey has set an hour-long ABC primetime special about weight loss drugs. The special, titled “An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution,” will air on ABC on Monday, Mar. 18 and will be available to stream the next day on Hulu .

While the easiest way for cable-cutters to stream the special is on Hulu starting on Tuesday, you can also tune into the special live online through a variety of Live TV streamers such as DirecTV , Sling TV , Fubo TV and Hulu + Live TV.

Oprah recorded the special in front of a live studio audience and gathers medical experts to discuss weight loss drugs such as Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy. The medical experts featured in the primetime special are Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. W. Scott Butsch, ABC News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton, ABC News medical correspondent Dr. Darien Sutton and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Dr. Amanda Velazquez. Oprah also will interview patients from around the country who used weight loss medications. Questions addressed in the special include: Who are the medications really intended for? Who is eligible to receive weight loss drugs? What are the short-term and long-term side effects?

News of the primetime special came  shortly after Oprah announced  she was stepping down from the board of WeightWatchers after almost 10 years because she had used weight loss drugs. She had served on the company’s board since 2015, when she acquired a 10% stake in WeightWatchers.

“An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution” will air on ABC on March 18 and will stream on Hulu on March 19.
