Second hand yachts: Buying a high latitudes yacht

Sailing into the coldest waters the planet has to offer is becoming increasingly popular. But finding a suitable yacht for high latitudes sailing requires additional – and sometimes very different – considerations. So, where should you begin when looking for a used yacht that’s capable of sailing to some of the world’s most inhospitable places?

Merf Owen, of Owen Clarke Yacht Design, has designed many a high latitudes yacht for cruising, while his wife Ashley Perrin is a professional ice pilot, formerly working for the British Antarctic Survey. He advises: “Choosing a yacht to cruise in high latitudes is inherently more complicated.

“The first thing to consider is where in the high latitudes you are likely to want to explore, weighing up the boat and the experience you will have on board. Lots of people cruise in high latitudes on yachts some would deem unsuitable, but many of these people are very experienced. A well-found GRP yacht or even a wooden Bristol pilot cutter could be a great contender for cruising northern Norway and Svalbard – but wouldn’t be suitable for the Northwest Passage . It is about what you’re planning to do, your expedition strategy and your level of experience.

“Also, would a stronger boat perhaps one day give you a false sense of security, meaning you go somewhere that you really shouldn’t? That’s worth considering too.”

High latitude cruising grounds have something of a hierarchy, Perrin explains. “People can put them all into one category, but each area has different characteristics. For example, Norway is a great training ground to see if you like the high latitude style of sailing. While also being wonderful cruising, it is well supported by good search and rescue and is (relatively) easy to get to. Greenland is a step up from that, then perhaps the Patagonian canals.

“The Antarctic peninsula is serious high latitude cruising, but by far the most extreme of them all is South Georgia. Extremely exposed, far from help and hard to get to! Each requires different things from the yacht.”

As a yacht designer, Owen’s view on what characteristics are important counter some conventions. “The stability curve is important to look at, but more important than the righting angle of the yacht is the amount of hull physically in the water, the mass that’s going to stop you tipping over, which of course also has a correlation with hull speed. Speed is safety in the high latitudes and, as there can sometimes be no wind preceding a gale, motoring range and speed aren’t dirty words either!

“‘Expedition yachts’ are also a new trend, and it’s a look of yacht that is becoming more popular, but not all are actually that well suited. Lifting keel yachts have many good attributes for high-latitude sailing, but [if they have] little fuel and water capacity, they are limited. You need to consider yacht specification sheets, correlating them carefully to the mission you have in mind.”

Choice of hull material is a big question, however, going for the toughest ice-proof design might not be advisable: “If you’re starting out you shouldn’t really be allowing yourself into a situation where you might be iced in, so perhaps it shouldn’t be your primary concern.

“A centreboard is useful in high latitude anchorages but being able to sail to windward off a lee shore is a fundamental characteristic. Balance everything out, rather than take a sales description at face value.”

A niche market

Jildou Huisman is experienced at selling in the high-latitudes yacht market, dealing in new and used yachts for KM Yachtbuilders in the Netherlands. Working mostly in aluminium, the yachts they build are often fully custom projects, specified for a specific high latitude mission. Their brokerage department also re-sells many high latitude- equipped yachts they have built as well as undertaking refits.

“We have seen a big increase in the number of people looking for a yacht that’s happy in the high latitudes,” says Huisman.

“The main thing that differentiates an aluminium yacht we build for high latitudes from one for more temperate sailing is the thickness of the hull. For simply cold weather sailing we would build around 6mm thick, but for high latitudes 10-15mm is needed for strength and rigidity. To overwinter iced in, as some of our customers have done successfully, a very strong hull is needed to withstand the pressure of the ice. We have built up to 25mm thick.

“Redundancy in systems such as heating, autopilot , etc are important as well. As a lot of our builds are completely custom, they are sometimes very specific aesthetically, largely because owners can spend a very long time living aboard.

“ Tranquillo , a Bestevaer 56, for example, has a classic look on the outside but is very modern on the inside, it was the owner’s way of making it his long term home. He completed the Northwest Passage twice on that yacht, spending 10 months iced in in Canada.”

The Surveyor’s View

Marine surveyor Ben Sutcliffe-Davies on steel vs aluminium yachts:

• Aluminium tends to be a much more consistent and predictable material for a hull than steel and requires very little maintenance. Steel, although strong, is inherently prone to rusting which tends to occur in places that are hard to reach.

• The ‘grade’ of construction material is fundamental. Yachts are occasionally built with a non-marine grade metal, despite this compromising the vessel.

• Whether steel or aluminium, welding is likely to be the weak point in the structure. Quite a few high latitude yachts are ‘home built’ so quality of welding will be a big factor.

• Poor bonding and isolation in metal yachts can be fatal to the hull structure. Even production aluminium yachts come out of the yard with features that will eat through the hull because isolation between two incompatible metals has been overlooked.

We bought a second hand high latitude yacht

As skippers for Skip Novak’s Pelagic Expeditions , they are experienced in sailing at high latitudes and plan to cruise both the Arctic and Antarctic while making videos for their YouTube channel Seas & Summits.

“Experience sailing Skip’s carefully designed yachts taught us that dependability, which could also be called simplicity, should lead the search for our own yacht,” explains Chris. “That said, it is hard to find a high latitude yacht on the used market, so there’s likely to be a degree of compromise whatever you buy. An aluminium hull is great if you can afford it as it’s maintenance free, but steel is much cheaper and still extremely strong as long as it’s properly maintained.”

Sophie and Chris had a list of essentials. “A pilot or doghouse is important in high latitudes. A constant and reliable source of heat also becomes crucial if you’re cruising for any length of time, so we were looking for a Refleks stove already on board, or the possibility to fit one. Originally conceived for fishing boats, unlike hot blown air diesel heating, you tend to turn the Refleks on and just leave it ticking over. Diesel consumption isn’t as much as you might think and we leave a kettle on the top so there is constant hot water for drinks.”

Due to how small the market for used high latitude yachts is, and worried they would lose the boat to another buyer, Sophie and Chris purchased Ocean Wanderer without a survey. “We actually came across her in the Azores. We’d been looking for about two years online, but no boat came as close as a prospect for us. There was already someone else interested but we got to know the owners, who had circumnavigated twice on her.

“They could see we would take her on the adventures she was built for, so we did a deal. “As they’d lived on board we didn’t have the concerns we might have had about a yacht that was only used part-time. Their lives had depended on her. There is also a great benefit to having common ground with the previous owner: they have spent a lot of time handing over to us and that has been invaluable.”

For Sale: 2022 Azimut Yachts Grande S10

The Azimut Grande S10 Latitude is listed with MarineMax Miami Yachts for $5.9 million. Latitude is a privately used 94-foot-3-inch yacht that has been fully maintained by its full-time captain and crew and is priced to sell.

Azimut Grande S10 designers were inspired by Malibu beach-house terraces with multiple decks that descend to the sand, which was previously reported in Yachting . Designers created about 550 square feet of outdoor space on the S10, including 150 square feet of foredeck, 215 square feet of flybridge, and 183 square feet of aft deck, not including the fold-down bathing platform.

Climb the centerline steps from the two-zone aft deck that lead up to the flybridge and feel the power coming from twin MTU M96L diesel engines as they throttle up to just over 2,600 horsepower each. The Latitude has a top speed of 35 knots, but the owner can stretch the range of the boat to 750 nautical miles if he slows down and cruises around 12 knots. The flybridge is covered by a factory hardtop with an L-shaped sofa on the port side that is covered with Batyline fabric, table with chairs on the starboard side, and teak covering the walking area for everyone to enjoy. The bridge console conceals most of the Naviop-integrated instrumentation and is set into a fold-down box, which, when up, presents two touchscreen displays.

One of the most comfortable areas on the Latitude is the two-zone aft deck. The stern is open and raised slightly, which will accommodate free-standing furniture, sun loungers, dancing area or whatever you want. The inner zone is tucked beneath the top-deck overhang and shielded by centerline flybridge steps, a bank of wet-bar furniture and carbon buttresses/fashion plates on both sides. Passengers can relax with cocktails and enjoy the views on a cruise to nowhere.

Step inside a set of sliding doors to the salon area of the Latitude where you will find a dining table occupying most of the port side area, and a second set of sliding glass that opens up into an additional lounging area. The sliding glass doors can be left open completely through to the lounge area and to the bridge beyond, or shut depending on what feeling, indoor-outdoor vibe, the owner wants. Close the doors and enjoy the TV area under 3 rectangular skylights and deep side windows.

Time for bed? The standard accommodation layout for the S10 has four en suite staterooms. The full-beam owners’ stateroom is amidships with an aft-facing island berth, sofa, vanity/desk and walk-in closet. The hullside windows (27-by-68 inches apiece) have Venetian blinds and super views. The trade-off for that sizable stateroom is the placement of the VIP, which is tucked in the bow with a diagonal double berth. Twin- and transverse-berth staterooms are just off the middle of the guest companionway.

company History

the Story of French shipyard Latitude 46 difficult. It should be considered the beginning of 1929, the code appeared the yacht Tofinou , or 1987, when Philip Joubert have made it world famous? Legend has it that classic wood 7-meter Tofinou was built by captain Merle in a defunct state Dahomey in 1929. Half a century later, its owner asked Jubera to restore the ship, but instead with the Tofinou was filmed the matrix and built a new yacht has already been made of fiberglass. The owner got his boat (supposedly the only Tofinou white), and then went custom build.

Thanks to the classic lines of the Tofinou 7 has become very popular. Was created a monotype class, and the yacht "sea people" (as translated Tofinou with Dahomey) began to participate in regattas.

the Idea of building a modern yacht in the classical style became the philosophy of Latitude 46, and the shipyard located on Ré island.

Under design Bureau Joubert-Nivelt in 1995, launched a line of classic motor boats Andreyale , and early 2000s , a model Tofinou 9.5 and Tofinou 12. They, too, became a sports monotypes.

In 2007, Philippe Joubert is retired, having sold Latitude 46 French entrepreneur Christian itcovici the . The new owner added a line of 8, 12, and 16th yachts, which had a hand Philippe Starck .

In 2013, Latitude 46 went bankrupt and was sold to the French Experton-Revollier SA , which already owned the shipyard >Wauquiez . By the way, Christian Itcovici headed both companies.

Manufacturing

In 2014, Latitude 46 changed residence from the Ile de Ré to the mainland of La Rochelle . The shipyard has 1,500 square meters of production space and more than 5,000 sq m maintenance hangars and storage facilities. The company, together with the shipyard Wauquiez is controlled by the family Itcovici, employs about 50 people.

the Shipyard Latitude 46 produces >daysailer and Tofinou range Andreyale classic powerboats. Also since 2007, the shipyard has been building yachts under the brand >Alphena Yachts.

the Basic rate the Builder makes on the brand Tofinou, the range is gradually expanding. At the Dusseldorf show in 2017, Latitude 46 Tofinou introduced the model 10C. The flagship model is considered to be introduced in 2012, the Tofinou 16.

Today there are more than 400 buildings Tofinou 7. and yet, these boats are a niche product. Daysailer Tofinou 7, 8, 9.5 and 12 recognized as monotypic classes and regularly participate in French regattas for classic yachts , like Régates Royales and Voiles de Saint-Tropez . Latitude 46 yachts builds-to-order with customization (if it's not against the rules of the class). The owners of the Tofinou is a narrow community of people with similar interests and prosperity (there's even Tofinou International Club). Owning a yacht Tofinou can be a window into this narrow circle, but a "pass" will be expensive.

43m Pershing fast motor yacht Chorusline for sale

The 43.3-metre fast motor yacht Chorusline is newly listed for sale with Charles Carveles of Edmiston .

Delivered from the renowned Italian builder of fast yachts, Pershing , in 2019, this Pershing 140 is constructed of aluminium and was fully repainted in 2023. Her design is by Fulvio De Simoni with interior by Italprojects and naval architecture by Ferretti Engineering Department.

Chorusline is described by the broker as "like new" as she has only ever been used as a dayboat and her beds never slept in.

Accommodation for a party of 10 guests is arranged over four cabins, comprising a master suite, a double cabin and two twins with additional Pullman berths. There are quarters for a crew of seven in four cabins.

Presently, the main-deck owner's suite is used as an entertainment space with a dining room, bar and cinema room, connected to the saloon. This could easily be converted back to a cabin, all the plumbing and infrastructure being in place. Textured wooden panelling adorns the interior bulkheads, contrasting with dark wooden flooring, while abstract chrome sculptures and green items of furniture give the spaces a sparkle.

Her expansive sundeck sports a Jacuzzi and sunpads forward, an al fresco dining area, bar and ample space to lounge about, all protected by an awning. At sea-level, the fold-down hull openings and large swim platform make for a spacious open-plan, teak-decked beach club from where water toys may be embarked, the whole area easily reached via twin transom staircases from the aft deck.

Four 2,600hp engines, with less than 700 hours on them, give the 380GT low-draft, yacht for sale a top speed of 38 knots and the ability to accelerate from rest to 35 knots in under a minute.

Cruising speed is 28 knots and she has a range of 1,400 nautical miles at 10 knots. Her inventory includes a four-metre tender, two paddle boards and brand new stand-up jet ski

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

In a series of photos posted by gossip blog Deuxmoi Monday, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were seen holding hands as they walked through the docks of an undisclosed location.

Although it’s unclear if they were on their way into the docks or out, they tried to keep a low profile with the “Lover” songstress hiding behind a baseball cap and sunglasses.

They also sported neutral outfits with Swift wearing a long-sleeve shirt and shorts and Kelce rocking a T-shirt and shorts.

Their getaway comes amid reports that the NFL star is planning a vacation with the 14-Grammy winner ahead of the release of her highly-anticipated album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” on April 19.

An insider close to Kelce, 34, told the US Sun, “He booked some very nice hotel suites and tables at great restaurants to take her on days off.

He wants to take her on romantic getaways to have her relax and go discover those nice cities and European romantic places together.”
