New Caledonia disaster

We booked a week bareboating in New Caledonia with Dream Yacht Charter through boatbookings one year before our charter. To start, the agent was very slow to respond to all of our inquiries but we put it down to time differences and their multiple commitments. About one month before our charter, civil unrest broke out in New Caledonia, 7 people have been killed and expats have been repatriated. We contacted boatbookings who were unaware of the issues and then told us the risk was low - only a level 1. In the following month, boatbookings and their delivery partner DYC continued to tell us they were ready and waiting for us to take our charter. Ultimately, we were seeking a credit. Only one week before our charter, when the airport was still closed and there were no commercial flights entering the country, they finally agreed to a credit but with significant restrictions. We declined as we had lost complete faith and trust in both boatbookings and DYC. We will never use either company again.

Profound dissatisfaction with the recent sailing vacation booked through Boataround and provided by Dream Yachts

I am writing to express my profound dissatisfaction with the recent sailing vacation booked through Boataround and Dream Yachts. The experience was severely below our expectations and has left us extremely disappointed.

Initially, Boataround appeared to be very responsive, but this changed dramatically as our sailing date approached. Despite our requests, we did not receive the skipper's information until the morning of our departure, and the skipper himself was notified only two days prior. This led to inadequate preparation, compromising our trip significantly. Additionally, we were not provided with the hostess/chef information until check-in, and Boataround failed to pass along our meal preferences to Dream Yachts. Consequently, the crew had to purchase food at the last minute, resulting in inadequate and insufficient meals. Midway through the trip, we had to pay out of pocket for additional food, despite that all meals were included in the initial cost. We even caught fish, which were used for our meals, yet we still faced a shortage and were overcharged.

Upon contacting Dream Yachts a few days before our trip to obtain the skipper and hostess information, we were redirected to Boataround, which was unhelpful and frustrating. This lack of coordination and communication severely impacted our overall experience.

Upon arrival, the condition of the yacht was appalling. The vessel was poorly maintained, with missing cushions, a dirty interior, and a damaged sliding door. On our first day, four of the rooms the beds would get wet despite all windows and hatches being sealed. The anchor was rusted and difficult to operate, the air conditioning was inadequate, and the skipper lacked essential knowledge about the yacht's systems. At one point, we ran out of fuel for the air conditioner, forcing us to overpay for gasoline, which lasted less than one night.

Our final night at the marina was unbearable. The air conditioning failed, and the skipper's attempt to fix it by switching to the generator was unsuccessful. The cabins reached temperatures over 90°F, forcing most of us to sleep outside and resulting in numerous mosquito bites.

Despite raising these issues with Dream Yachts during checkout, we were only reimbursed for the fuel and one day of the trip, we paid over $26,000 for the trip. We were not compensated for the additional food expenses .

This experience was in stark contrast to that of our friends who sailed with a different company at the same time and had an excellent trip. Based on our experience, I would rate our trip one star out of ten.

I strongly urge Boataround and Dream Yachts to address these issues to prevent future customers from enduring similar distress. I hope for a more satisfactory resolution, as the compensation provided thus far is wholly inadequate given the extent of the inconvenience and discomfort we suffered.

The Dubrovnik base was a great location…

The Dubrovnik base was a great location to start our sailing experience. The DYC team got us out on time as promised and the yacht was as expected. Nothing was missing and the vessel was in great shape! Croatia is the most beautiful place to experience and the many islands we stopped in were a lot of fun and the anchorage’s and moorings were amazing [Hvar, Mljet, Lostovo, and Pelisaic]. We will come back and spend more time. Dan Long

Sailing in Palma Mallorca was great. We will go back

Sailing in Palma Mallorca was an absolute delight! The base manager was top-notch, ensuring everything ran smoothly and efficiently. The dock manager's skill and diligence were evident, making the experience even more enjoyable. The location itself was picturesque and offered the perfect backdrop for a fantastic time on the water. I had an amazing experience overall and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable sailing adventure.

Unsafe yacht

I chartered a 52 ft yacht in Antigua and it was unfit for purpose and potentially dangerous. There was an extensive list of faults which ruined our holiday, including a windlass that did not operate, an anchor that did not swivel, reefing lines jammed in the boom and hazardous swim ladder. The yacht also lacked basic appliances, had a hole in the kettle and missing fire extinguishers. This is an accident waiting to happen. I could go on… Dream yachts refused to even acknowledge my emails and sent no apologies. Avoid them at all cost.

DYC makes it really easy to charter

DYC makes it really easy to charter a bareboat sailing vacation. Having done a dozen trips with the competition in BVI, Bahamas, Greece, Italy, etc I feel more confident in Dream's ability to get you on a high quality boat on time and in good condition. When they missed the boat (pun intended) in one situation, they were also gracious about admitting fault and offering a credit to future trips. I especially want to call out Savannah Collins on the American sales team who was a joy to work with over the phone. Thanks for everything Savannah!

Very good experience at Marina Pomer in Croatia

Since there are so many negative reviews about DYC, and I believe that this largely depends on the destination, I must share our positive experience here. We chartered a Dufour 460 at Marina Pomer in Croatia. A few days before our vacation started, I received a call informing us that our boat was out of commission, but we were offered an alternative without any additional charge. The options were a Dufour 520 or a Lagoon 40 catamaran. Since we had no experience with a catamaran, we chose the Dufour 520. Although the contract stated that check-in wasn't until 5:00 PM, we were allowed to board the boat earlier. The check-in process was quite swift, yet very thorough, and everything was explained to us. Given the age of the ship, there were a few minor issues, but these were repaired directly at the marina by the charter company. We had a great week; the ship was good for sailing and steering, and the equipment was comprehensive. The ropes, sails, and the Bimini top all appeared almost new. There were no issues during the return; checkout was again quite swift, minor defects and our comments were noted immediately and subsequently repaired. Daria is always a bit rushed and in a hurry, which is understandable since all boats are inspected and reassigned on Saturdays, but he handles everything with a lot of humor. After all the negative reviews, I felt quite uneasy before our vacation, but we had a wonderful week, were not disappointed, and I would definitely charter with DYC in Croatia again.

Unfortunately disappointing (Abacos)

Unfortunately our 3rd tour with DYC was disappointing. The captain was disinterested, rude and barely present. The Abacos are still worth seeing - with a different crew. Despite our feedback, Dream Yacht Charter didn't get in touch. Bad customer service for us. We sailed the last time. Well, we hardly sailed.

No Dream in Dream yacht Charter

This was my worst vacation. We bare boated and the boat broke down, for 5 days we were stuck in a marina, while the boat was repaired and DYC has refused to do anything. these additional costs, we didn't plan for, and we lost a huge part of our vacation. before you book with them, try getting a hold of the base in the Bahamas, or a supervisor or someone who deals with complaints or refunds. Aside from sales/customer service (booking) you wont get past the iron curtain!

First experience with DYW and first…

First experience with DYW and first time with DY Croatia. Preparation and briefing with the service team in US was so thorough that when I got to Dubrovnik ACI Marina everything run smoothly. No hidden costs, everything very transparent. We took a skipper who happened to be top notch, a local celebrity. Trip was excellent in all respects but we had little wind and we had to motor most of the time: next time I will make sure we reserve minimum guaranteed winds of 15 knots LOL

Dream Yacht Charter Raiatea Bora Bora

We had a blast on a 5-days trip around Raiatea, Taha’a & Bora Bora. Conditions were exceptional so was the crew. We had a beautiful and confortable catamaran for the 7 of us with plenty of space. The crew was super friendly and knowledgeable bringing us to beautiful snorkelling and cultural places around the different islands. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience!

Fantastic experience all round

Fantastic experience once again delivered by Dream Yacht Charters in the UK. Transparent pricing from the start and excellent value. Could not believe that the insurance indemnity was included in the price! Lorraine could not have worked harder to guide us on location and yachts to suit our needs. Any questions were dealt with quickly and professionally. The yacht we chartered met with our expectations and I have no doubt that had we experienced any difficulties at the base, Lorraine would have done her utmost to sort. Thank you for such a first class service. We will continue to charter from Dream Yacht Charters without reservation

Dodging any issues.

We lost one day of our charter due to our freshwater being pumped into the starboard engine bilge whose bilge pump was not working and consequently filled up with water , at one point we thought we were sinking ! We returned to base as we had no water and no way of keeping it in the tanks even if we could have refilled. In another incedent in a torrential downpour a fixed cabin window leaked and destroyed my laptop. The reply from DYC main office was less than helpful. The laptop destruction was our fault as we put it in the wrong place and the lost day was ignored. Be very carefull when dealing with the main office they seem only to want to dodge any issues which involve any sort of refund.

Great charter with Dream Yacht in St John

Had a great bareboat charter sailing around St John out of St Thomas with Dream Yacht Charter in a brand new Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40. Thanks to Dawn Fingers and the rest of the team for helping to accommodate our last minute booking. Highlights were Zozo’s at Caneel Bay and Cruz Bay. Very bad experience chapter 2

After having the bad experience described in my post of 04/11/2022 (see below Title "Very bad experience") Dream Yacht Charter asked me filling the form bit.lydreamyacht I filled in the form on 20/11/2022 but I never got a reply... If no compensation is soon accepted, after discussion with a lawyer, I plan a legal action. The complaint will be located in France. I also propose sharing the practical information (submit of a complaint to the court, steps...) for French customers wishing running a legal complaint. Cabin charter in Corsica South cancelled with no explanation

Booked and paid last May a cruise (cabin charter) in Corsica South for the w/c Aug 7 (2 cabins); two weeks before the start of the vacation (overall 2 weeks with trips to Paris and Bordeaux already booked), my cruise was cancelled for "overbooking". Despite several attempts to get an explanation, an excuse or a counteroffer, no one from both DYC Italy nor DYC.com replied so far (after a month). I'm very very disappointed for this, especially because I was a DYC client since years (5 cruises so far). While I want to thank Mondovela, the Italian DYC agency, for providing me with a backup solution in Sardinia, saving at least partially my summer holidays. P.N.

Hi Piero Thank you for your feedback. We are so sorry to hear about your issues booking with us. At the time your booking was made we were in the process of migrating our reservation system and your booking was received on our old system which resulted in an overbooking of the cruise. We were in touch with your broker and proposed alternative dates and destinations which unfortunately did not work. We are so pleased they found an alternative solution for you. We hope you will return to us so we can show you how our booking process has improved. Best wishes the Dream Yacht Charter team

RUN away from DYC

Run, do not walk, away from these people. "Dream" Yacht Charter should be "Nightmare" Yacht Charter. We had the misfortune to give them a deposit for a charter in Tahiti before Covid hit. While other travel industry companies tried to be reasonable, DYC continually tried to squeeze us (like initially demanding full payment far in advance of our charter that never happened.) I understand Covid was hard for everyone, but the way these people jerked us around, changed the rules, made unreasonable demands, is just too much. Eventually my group decided we would rather lose our deposit rather than give these people another dollar of our money. You have been warned.

Dear Mike H, Thank you for your feedback. Hearing about your customer experience helps us understand where we need to improve. This year has been a challenge for many in the tourism industry. We adjusted our booking policy to try and make it as flexible as possible and we are sorry your booking was impacted. Best wishes, the Dream Yacht Charter team

What an AMAZING experience

What an AMAZING experience. We’ve just returned from a week long skippered charter from Corfu, sailing around the beautiful islands of the Ionian. Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu Old Town were beautiful and the secluded bays we had the pleasure of visiting thanks to our local skipper, Nicholas, were simply overwhelming. Fly and flops are no longer for us - we’ll be chartering with DYC for the foreseeable future. Shout out to our skipper who made the holiday as fantastic as it was. We couldn’t have asked for a better week.

Dream Yacht Charters (DYC) is the largest charter company by any measurement. With bases all over the world and a very wide variety of monohulls and catamarans, the options are nearly endless. DYC feels a bit more like a "franchise" model with many of their locations operating like affiliates vs. fully owned and operated by the parent company. This allows them to expand quickly but does pose some risk as each base experience can vary.

DYC also provides the most charter options of any charter company. You can rent a cabin for a week or take a boat across the Atlantic for a 6 month sabbatical.

DYC's ownership options are also vast including the common "guaranteed income" and "performance based" options but also including unique offerings like their "Fractional Ownership" program.

If you're planning to charter, DYC will almost certainly be an option.

Experience with Dream Yacht Charter (owner & guest)?

  • Add to quote

I am considering a charter management program to finance a boat. Does anyone have experience with Dream Yacht Charter? Two options seem to be interesting for me: Dream easy: 35% upfront + 25% balloon payment -> here the question is if I get at least a partial owner's title on the boat? (for the case of insolvency) Partnership: 55% upfront -> I suppose this one comes with a 1/1 title. I know this is not the king of investments but 40% value loss over 5 years seems realistic, probably this is the cheapest way to manage ~4weeks/year sailing time.

Hello, What are your goals for the boat - charter then sell or take over after? I just returned from a charter with DYC - people were great. Boat was a 2014 - in terrible shape. Mechanically sound and rigging was good but surface wise she was beat up and not taken care of. I have made a formal 'complaint ' with DYC and still waiting for their reply.

I was in the BVIs (3 weeks ago) and I was not the boat owner. A refit for her, based on my standards would be a complete interior renovation of cupboards/appliances/flooring/blinds, wiring and control assessment and replacement, deck refurbishing. Hull was scratched up but acceptable. Nav electronics were useless - kept shutting down. The lines were all different sizes/ material and conditon. I was told to run the generator 6-8 hours a day to keep everything charged and run the A/C - if this was done for the past 3 yrs. then those hours really build up on the 'mechanical' side. So cost could be expensive of for the latter component rebuild or replacement. Charter Company standards for such upkeep will vary I am certain. I have dealt with Horizon Yacht Charters as well and find them good. I am certain that there are others, but I would visit some boat shows and search the net for previous owner assessments of the companies before stepping in. Hope this helps.

Thanks! Owner assessments - especially helping negative feedback is extremely rare to find. Actually for DYC I found some positive feedback so far. I do not mind e.g. if the sails are worn off after 5 years or the engine needs a standard overhaul do to its hours. But groundings (remember Cheeky Rafiki!), hull/helm/rudder damage of any kind, dead electronics is unacceptable. I'd say I'd accept a "complete blue-water refit" budget of <10% of the boat price (that's pretty much done if you replace the sails, batteries & service the engine). As for Horizon: they offer Bavarias for monohull, no thanks...

where is dream yacht charter headquarters

just heard about a bigger Bavaria that was bought from charter company. owner had the yard do a complete refit and the generator had to be removed for overhaul. the only way out was through the side of the hull. built like a Motorhome.

overbored said: ... the only way out was through the side of the hull. built like a Motorhome. Click to expand...

I just finished up a charter with DYC - with the caveat that I have only done one charter with them, I would will probably never charter with them again, and would never put a boat into charter with them. We were on a 2015 Bali 4.3 - I was interested in it as a possible BVI charter. The boat was only two years old, but was not in great shape - all the cabinetry hardware was ready to be replaced - hinges completely rusted, faucets badly corroded. We also had a problem with cockroaches on the charter which resulted in them fogging the boat after we returned it. Our electronics had nothing but problems - wifi was almost worthless since we were unable to connect to it much of the time. The main chartplotter at the helm froze on a regular basis and had to be rebooted on a regular basis. The sails looked pretty knackered as well, but I don't have a frame of reference if that would be considered typical. The bottom of the boat was in bad need of cleaning - lots of green slime growing on the bottom. One of our heads blocked completely on the trip necessitating two trips out by the repair team and a complete tear down to fix. Fortunately the head belonged to the skipper that was on board, so we weren't the cause of it. The skipper that was on board was great but did make the comment that after about 2 years in charter the boats are about done - can't imagine what they look like after 5 years. I sent an email outlining my experience to DYC - have to yet to hear back. There are better charter companies out there then DYC - we are on our second charter with BVI Yacht Charters in a 2016 Helia and the difference is night and day - of course it is a newer boat, and is better designed boat, but I'm sure glad that we got the better yacht as our second charter rather than the first!

Be wary of the tax advantages associated with charter ownership. Most models I've seen show depreciation deductions, which are perfectly legal, but are also critical to make the numbers work. Since the boat will actually depreciate, that portion that represents actual reduction in value is truly a tax advantage. However, tax laws let you keep going, until your tax basis is zero. This means that when you ultimately sell the boat, you will pay taxes on whatever you sell her for. On the maintenance side, you want the best show available. Getting a hunk of junk back at the end just has to be a nightmare. It will, however, have accelerated rental wear and tear. It will never look like it was owner sailed.
