Clipper Round The World Race 2024 Comes To Airlie Beach

Author Image

World-wide racing competition, Clipper Round The World is currently in Airlie Beach!

The Clipper Round The World race is a biyearly yacht race which ventures to eight destinations around the globe. The race gives non-experienced sailors to opportunity to pay to competitively sail around the world on custom-designed, 60-foot identical yachts. Participants undertake four weeks of training to gain the knowledge and skills needed to sail around the world for 10 months.

There are 11 yachts involved, each with their own race team. In total there are 11 teams, over 700 crew, and they cover 40,000 nautical miles. Each team has a professional skipper on board, as well as other qualified crew who can assist the amateur sailors.

The 2023-2024 race began in Portsmouth, United Kingdom on the 3rd September, 2023 and is set to finish in July 2024 in Oban, Scotland. The 11 yachts visit eight different locations around the world including three ports in Australia.

At the time of this article (Jan 2024), the Clipper Round The World crew are currently moored at Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays before departing for the next leg of their journey on the 22nd January.

Where does the Clipper Round The World Race go?

a shot of an island with clear blue water in front

Before arriving in Airlie Beach, the Clipper Round The World  crew raced up from Newcastle in New South Wales. Their next destination is Ha Long Bay in Vietnam.

Every second year when the race takes place, the organisers of the race decide what they want the route to look like. The route changes each time and more than 50 cities around the world have hosted the 60-foot yachts.

The 2023-2024 racing route starts from Portsmouth in the United Kingdom and the first three stops are Puerto Sherry in Spain, Punta Del Este in Uruguay, and Cape Town in South Africa. The race then makes its way to Australia stopping in Fremantle, Newcastle and the Whitsundays. The next leg stops in Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, Zhuhai and Qingdao in China, Seattle in the USA, Panama, and Washington DC in the USA. The homecoming leg makes it to Oban in Scotland, concluding 10 months of sailing. The crew are given a few days to a week in each port to relax on land and explore their new surroundings.

History of the Clipper Round The World Race

A sign that says 'raced by people like you'

The first Clipper Round The World Race took place in October 1996 where eight 60-foot yachts left Plymouth in the UK and raced around the world. The race was created by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston who founded Clipper Ventures, a company that runs the races. The initial race stopped in ports such as Madeira, Fort Lauderdale, the Galápagos Islands, Hawaii, Yokohama, Salvador and the Azores. That first race finished in September 1997.

Since 1996, more than 5,000 people have competed in what is often referred to as the “world’s toughest ocean racing challenge”.

Airlie Beach Race Week 2023

The highly anticipated Airlie Beach Race Week kicked off on Friday with a spectacular mass start, marking the beginning of a week that looked to promise close and exciting sailing action. With ideal sailing conditions and 20-knot winds, participants certainly relished racing on day one.

However, days two and three brought unexpected challenges as light winds swept over the racecourse, ultimately leading to the abandonment of several divisions on Sunday.

Managing the fluctuating conditions, CYCA Member Raymond Roberts and the crew of Team Hollywood showcased exceptional skill and teamwork aboard the Botin Class 40. With a dominant victory in the first race, and a closer victory in the second race, they demonstrated their versatility to excel in all conditions. A 3 rd in the third race yesterday solidified their lead in IRC Division 1.

Andrew Kearnan and the crew of the TP52 KOA placed 4 th in the initial race, then backed it up with a 2 nd in the second race. Their persistence paid off as they won the third race, propelling them to a strong 2 nd overall in IRC Division 1.

David Currie’s DK46 Nizam put on a dominant display in IRC Division 2 with comfortable wins in both the first and second races. Despite the abandonment of the third race due to extremely light winds, Nizam’s exceptional performance has positioned them at the forefront of IRC Division 2.

Geoff Hill’s Santa Cruz 72 Antipodes is sitting 6 th overall in IRC Division 1.

Ian MacDiarmid’s Carkeek 40 Victoire currently stands in 3 rd overall in PHS Performance Cruising Division 1. While the third race for the division was also abandoned due to light winds, Victoire’s performance in the preceding races has showcased their competitiveness.

In PHS Performance Cruising Division 2, Antipodes sits in 3 rd place overall; John Clinton’s Beneteau Oceanis 50 Holy Cow in 6 th .

Kate Leeson’s Cookson 12 Calibre 12 and Joe Goddard’s Beneteau First 40.7 Blue Moon currently occupy 6 th and 12 th in PHS Performance Cruising Division 3.

In the PHS Trailable Yachts division, Member Andrew York’s Like Oxygen faced challenges on day one but remained undeterred. Despite retiring from Race 1, they currently sitting in 10 th .

As Airlie Beach Race Week continues, we wish all the competitors the very best.

A spotlight on Australia: Airlie Beach, Whitsundays returns as a Host Port on the 2023-24 global race route

18 August 2023

Making its fourth appearance on the global race route, the tropical paradise of Airlie Beach in The Whitsundays will once again welcome the eleven-strong fleet of Clipper Race yachts in January 2024.

The final stop of a trio of Australian Host Port featuring on the event’s circumnavigation, Race Crew will enjoy the crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery of The Whitsundays as they rest and unwind before the next leg of the adventure begins.

A stunning collection of 74 islands in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef makes up the tropical wonder that is the Whitsundays, with Airlie Beach being the gateway to these beautiful islands. While hosted at the Coral Sea Marina Resort, Race Crew will be provided with the perfect base to explore the stunning landscapes of the local area as they take a few days here to unwind and enjoy the many hidden gems.

The azure waters are a magnet for ocean-lovers, with a wealth of diving, snorkelling and watersports on offer on the Great Barrier Reef and the secluded beaches scattered around the islands. However, it’s not all about the ocean- the area is also famous for beautiful tropical rainforest, and you’ll find stunning waterfalls in the Conway National Park which are well worth the hike to find. The Mt Rooper walk is worth your while: hikers will be rewarded with sweeping views across the Whitsunday Islands and beyond.

Joscelyn O'Keefe, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Coral Sea Marina Resort said “Following the positive economic impact of its previous visits, we are delighted to once again be Host Port for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Having the opportunity to further promote our region as a leading sailing destination in the Southern Hemisphere is one which we couldn’t pass up.

“This will be the fourth time the Clipper Race fleet has been welcomed to Coral Sea Marina Resort and the team here are very much looking forward to the buzz the race fleet creates at the marina and throughout Airlie Beach during their stay.

“We will be working closely with the Clipper Race team to find ways to engage the community with the race and make this another memorable stopover for the race crews and their supporters.”

Clipper Race Director Mark Light said: “The second race of Leg 4 sees the fleet head further north up the Australian East coast to the warmer airs and azure blue waters of The Whitsundays and Airlie Beach. We have visited The Whitsundays on several race editions and our crews will have an incredible time in such a stunning location.”

Airlie Beach is the start port for Leg 5: The Asia-Pacific Challenge. On leaving the Coral Sea Marina Resort, the Clipper Race fleet will race to the iconic Ha Long Bay in Vietnam: a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and stunning destination.

Clipper Round The World Race yachts bunker down at Airlie Beach as potential cyclone approaches

Line of yachts in airlie beach marina at sunset.

A mismatched bunch of thrill seekers on a world marathon sailing challenge have been forced to shelter in Airlie Beach as the threat of a tropical cyclone increases.

Key points:

  • The boats are participating in the 11-month Clipper Round The World Race
  • It's hoped the sailors will be on their way again by Friday after the weather clears
  • Crew members have taken the opportunity to explore the region ahead of the potential cyclone's arrival

The Clipper Round The World Race takes 11 nearly identical 70-foot yachts on an 11-month race around the world through the unpredictable Atlantic trade winds and doldrums, and across the formidable waves of the Pacific.

But according to race director Mark Light, it is the first time in the race's 28-year history crews have been forced to bunker down due to a cyclone.

The crews, which are made up almost entirely of non-professional sailors bar the captain and first mate, are spending the next few days battening down the hatches in anticipation of Cyclone Kirrily.

Hannah Brewis, 27, is a skipper on board one of the yachts.

Hannah Brewis stares out in front of her wearing a yellow jacket and with the ocean behind her.

"We have seen some big, big winds, maybe not cyclone level but we have been through some pretty big storms and the boats are totally prepared for them," she said.

"We've had plenty of time to get the boats safe on the dock where they are, we have a thorough preparation list which all of the boats have done.

"We're ready for it to come."

She said the crews, which could be made up of people from every continent and job, ranging from top lawyers to hairdressers to tattooists, had all been through the exact same training to help prepare for these types of situations.

The front of a yacht heading into a big wave with three crew on board in yellow jackets.

Batten the hatches

But the preparation might be an interesting sight for Whitsundays locals passing by.

Aside from removing "basically anything that can fly away", Mr Light said the boats were joined together for protection.

"We linked the boats across the bows to make sure they're all kind of in one unit," he said.

"And then we spin the boats around so every alternate bow is facing one direction and then the next one to it is facing the other direction."

line of yachts with sails down in the marina.

Mr Light said this was to stop the masts from banging into each other.

He said he believed this is the first time a race has been stopped for a cyclone since the event began in 1996.

"We've obviously had plenty of different weather events. We've had race start delayed [due to] … hurricane-force winds in the UK," he said.

Mr Light said while they'd experienced a cyclone before, it passed ahead of the fleet allowing crews to continue the race.

A chance to see the sights

The current plan is for the fleet to depart Airlie Beach on Friday.

"But obviously, we're monitoring every day, every few hours … if it needs to change, we will do so," he said.

Hannah Brewis said the weather in Airlie Beach was still beautiful.

A birds eye view of a yacht in the middle of the ocean on a cloudy day.

"We've had three extra days to enjoy and most people have taken advantage to go and do all of the sites," she said.

"When the weather starts coming in, it'll be more resting and keeping calm so that we're ready for the next race."

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show

The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.

Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.

These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Airlie Beach Race

Photo of YachtBoatNews

Sunshine finally poked through the clouds, and competitors aboard the 64 competing boats at the 2020 Airlie Beach Race Week Whitsundays Festival of Sailing did not find the anticipated 15 knots, instead the breeze peaked at 8 knots.

Entrants in the Performance Racing division took their turn at windward/leeward course racing, sailing two races of two laps each in 6-8 knots. Mister Magoo is making her 12th appearance at Race Week, while her owner, Goggles, has done even more. The pair sit atop of the division scoreboard after co-winning Race 4 with Malcolm Dean’s ‘The Stig’.

Both boats are from Queensland, but with one difference – Mister Magoo has been at it so long, she has a young fan club, and some members were on hand at the Whitsunday Sailing Club today.

Previously, Mister Magoo has won three different divisions at Airlie Beach and scored second and third places too. “We go to whichever division has the most boats and that way we get more competition,” Goggles said.

Damian Suckling excelled again with his well-named Top Gear in the first race of the day, he and second placed Mister Magoo finishing a mere 39 seconds when the handicaps were applied. Top Gear was on top of the leaderboard with Mister Magoo one point behind.

But when Mister Magoo returned the favour in the next race, its advantage leading into Tuesday is one and a half points.

Goggles: “Vivace took line in both races and we were second. But it was really close between The Stig, #Spank and us. We got lucky and got away at the last.

Light wind suits us smaller boats,” he commented.

On Top Gear, Goggles said, “They are sailing consistently well; much better than last year. We’re all kind of close though, so it makes it more interesting.”

All the other divisions, including Multihull Racing, were on longer island courses. Michel Van Der Zwaard’s Extreme 40, Back in Black had the goods in Race 3. Her winning corrected margin from George Owen’s F28, Charleston, was just over 23 minutes.

“We are very happy,” Van Der Zwaard commented. “We have a mixed crew on the boat. Two are from The Boatworks – Julian the skipper and Max. They have been very successful in Australia. So we have two of the best crews together on one boat.

“We had everything weather-wise, from not much, to 6-7 knots at the most. We had a terrible start and it took us a minute to get going. We still made it to the top mark just behind ORMA 60 (Dale Mitchell), but then they got away. They stayed out in current, while we hugged the rocks, and we got in front of them again.

“We saw them stuck at Denman and thought there was a problem – but when we got there, we discovered what the problem was – we were both stuck in half a knot of breeze!

“We made mistakes, but we made good decisions too. It was a great day out, Van Der Zwaard said.

Questioned on the speed of the ORMA, the first to race in Australia, Back in Black’s owner responded: “We see the guys at the start line, and not again till we’re back at the Club!”

“The amazing thing is, they stood off the start yesterday, then came flying in at 20 knots and timed the start perfectly. They are such good sailors.”

Sydney’s Ray Roberts (Team Hollywood) made it three from three by winning Race 3 in the IRC Rating Passage Series, and once again, Barry Cuneo’s TP52, Envy Scooters, played bridesmaid. David Currie’s modified Farr 40 Ponyo finished third, for third in the pointscore, but on nine points second placed Envy Scooters.

Cut Snake (Robert Dean) snagged a second successive win in Multihull Passage to continue to lead that pointscore from Tyee III (John Williams). Michael Hayes’ Renaissance is third overall, but on equal points with Tyee III.

Tomorrow is lay day when crews will relax or train before returning to race on Tuesday.
