Achilles 24

Achilles 24 is a 23 ′ 9 ″ / 7.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Oliver Lee and built by Butler Mouldings Ltd. between 1968 and 1985.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Based on the AJAX (open cockpit day boat) and modified by the builder, Chris Butler. Fin keel version - draft: 3.75’. Triple keel - draft: 3.51’.

Around 600 were built from 1968 until production finished in 1985 with some completed from kits by their owners. With her moderate beam and fine lines the Achilles 24 has an easily driven well balanced hull.

In an April 2006 review  of the best second-hand yachts between 22 and 24 feet, Practical Boat Owner magazine noted of the Achilles 24 that 'If looking for performance you won't do much better than this slippery little number from the board of Oliver Lee'.

Sailing Today magazine published a comprehensive and well illustrated review of sail number 463 in their September 1999 issue, and much earlier in April 1971 Yachts and Yachting magazine reviewed sail number 50 which was the Achilles 24 demonstrator boat at that time. The reviews said things like 'This is a boat from which I could get lots of enjoyment', and 'The Achilles is a joy to sail'.

In 1967 Oliver Lee produced a design for a 19ft open keelboat. A wooden hull was built and sailed and on being found to be a excellent boat she was used as a plug for a G.R.P. mould, and so started production of the Squib. The Squib is still in production today with over 800 having been built, surely testement to any designer and design. The Squib was first built by the Essex Boat Company, and a request was made that Oliver Lee should design a full deck with coachroof for her. This he did and the version was called the Hunter 19 with the Essex Boat Company becoming the now well known Hunter Boats. The Squib had been derived from a larger design by Oliver Lee from 1966, a 7/8ths rig 23 ft keelboat called the Ajax. Some 60 Ajax's were built by around 1968 and she proved a successful boat, her sailing qualities such that she was put forward as a contender for selection as a class for the 1972(?) Olympics, losing out to the Soling. However the Ajax was also an open boat and it was considered that she would have more appeal as a cruiser/racer and a deck moulding was designed and produced as for the Squib. The decked version of the Ajax was called the Achilles.

A Family affair, Father and son in Goskar and Chilli Pepper
respectively. St Mawes in the background.

The first Achilles design was improved by Chris Butler of Butler Mouldings. He added four inches to her freeboard which increased the headroom below and gave the Achilles the distinctive knuckle below her sheer line. This also increased her overall length and she became known as the Achilles 24. The rig was changed from 7/8ths to masthead and the draught slightly increased with the shape of the ballast keel altered to lower the centre of gravity and give the keel a very efficient bulb shape.

Two keel options were available, a single fin or a slightly shallower draft triple fin that allowed the boat to take the ground safely without any other support. The triple keel version retained a 7/8ths rig until about sail number 170 after which a masthead rig was used.

The deck moulding was also redesigned during the Achilles 24 production. The earlier boats had a chain locker but no anchor locker so that the anchor had to be stowed on the foredeck or elsewhere below. This was changed at around sail number 250 when an anchor locker was added. Sometime later, possibly sail number 350 onwards, the cockpit coaming at the main hatch was raised from its original height of two inches and a bridge deck was made across the companionway at the height of the cockpit seats. For the record my boat, sail number 302, has the anchor locker but retains the low coaming in the cockpit.

There were also detail changes to the design. The cabin widows in the earlier boats were rubber mounted perspex with three separate windows on each side. This was later changed to a single tinted sheet of perspex on each side. At the same time the shroud chain plates were moved inboard to the coach roof from just inside the toe rail, allowing a tighter sheeting angle with the headsails. On the foredeck the single cleat was discontinued and twin cleats used, and in the cockpit the locker hinge scuppers were redesigned. There were also changes to the galley during the boats production. By the time production ended some 600 Achilles 24's had been built.

A seminal range of small but tough offshore cruisers

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

Chris Butler designed and built a seminal range of small but tough offshore cruisers that found themselves in all corners of the world. They sold in large numbers for the times (late 60s to late 70s). Performance across the range tended to be moderate to good and the interiors on the small side due to narrow beam, but their strong suit was sea-keeping and the ability to keep going in difficult conditions. Butler competed in AZAB and OSTAR races in the Achilles 24, which featured a bulbed fin keel. This gave the boat quite respectable speed and windward performance but a triple-keeled, shoal draught version was much more pedestrian. She has four berths, a small galley and a rudimentary toilet. Headroom was just 4ft 8in (1.37m). Most of the 350-plus built were originally sold without engines and many will still use outboards, but an inboard petrol engine was an option, usually quickly replaced with a small diesel. Factory-built boats were sound, strong but simple. The quality of the many home-built models will be variable.

Achilles 24 Yacht / Sailboat

Achilles 24

Achilles 24

The Achilles 24 yacht was designed in the late 1960s by Oliver Lee, and between then and the mid 1980s 600 were made, illustrating the boat’s popularity. It was designed as a cruising variant of Lee’s Ajax racing keelboat, and it is a fast and seaworthy yacht. There is comfortable room for two, with the possibility of housing four, but this would be in very close proximity.

Two versions of the Achilles 24 yacht were built, the fin keel, which has a draught of 3’9”, and the triple-keeled version which has a shallower draught but slightly higher ballast weight. The fin-keel’s advantage is in its speed, but the triple-keeled version can dry out upright, an advantage many see as outweighing the slight discrepancy in the two versions’ top speeds.

The Achilles 24 yacht is British built made using fine quality materials. It is possible to sail the Achilles 24 single-handed, and the boats can reach high speeds downwind and will still perform steadily upwind. The boat can be compete in ocean races and is safe and responsive the only downside is the lack of interior space.

The Achilles 24’s size means it is an ideal starter boat or a first racer. Many previous Achilles 24 owners sell her to buy a boat with greater interior area, not because of her performance which has generally very positive reviews.

Achilles 24

Year built: 1980 Location: Great Britain, Conwy Marina Hull material: GRP/polyester

Technical data Length: 7.01 m (23 feet) Beam / draught: 2.13 / 1.14 m Weight: ca. 2,897 kg

Engine: Tohatsu 4 Stroke Engine power: 5 hp (3.7 kW) Propulsion: outboarder

The Achilles 24 was designed in 1968 by Oliver Lee and were built by Butler Mouldings of Gowerton, near Swansea in Wales. As was the case with many British yacht builders at the time, boats were sold both as completed boats and as kits for home completion.

Two versions were built, the fin-keel and the triple keel version, with six inches shallower draught but slightly higher ballast weight. The fin-keel versions are definitely faster.

As would be expected in a yacht derived from a racing keelboat, and with a better than 50% ballast ratio, performance is good. They are popular club racers, and in their early days achieved a remarkable record in long-distance sailing, including one being the smallest boat to complete the 1976 OSTAR singlehanded transatlantic race, fitted out from a kit in preparation for the race and sailed by Rodney Kendall.

This particular example is a re-possession by Quay Marinas, the age is unknown as well as engine and sail condition hence the very low price. Some attention and upgrades are needed to the vessel but for anyone willing to get there hands dirty they have a wonderful and well recognised British sailing vessel.

and back a few times. Nice place to visit by yacht and the North Sea will give some interesting challenging conditions.

The problem however, is how to keep watch on a longer voyage which will be needed in the North Sea, without becoming so exhausted that you are a risk.

Fitting a transmitting would be high on my list of stuff to do.

, an must be really good idea and I will probably get one by La Rochelle where cross the ocean in a 20ft sailboat is'nt a big deal so I got used to the idea it's not a huge chalenge for me as well. I probably have a less realistic perception of the jurney than the people sailing for years but much more of the beguinner's optimism. ))))) My lack of experience may be a plus.

The question is not even "to do it or not", the question is "how". If you have any or experience to chare, it will be really helpful!

Thanks

I met a guy in who had sailed a 22ft ( can't remember what make ) from the UK so you certainly wouldn't be the smallest .

, across the Pacific to Maui. He it when he got here for more than he bought it in and now plans to fly back to , buy another, and do it again. He's had quite a lot of experience with sailing though.

However, another (very inexperienced) friend of mine flew over to a couple of years ago, bought his 30ft sailboat there and never having sailed before, somehow, along with three non-sailor friends, managed to sail it back here to Maui. He's a far more experienced sailor now, still living on it, and quite happy.

I think "do your homework, be prepared, and don't be afraid of adventure". But do realistically weigh your risks versus benefits.

What are your plans with the boat after you make the crossing, if you should do it?

I have on the Observer Singlehanded Trans-Atlantic . (OSTAR)
Chris Butler the and of the Achilles range of competed in both the 1976 and 1980 races onboard his so they are up to it. It all depends who you ask!

The bathtub admirals will say "no".
Those who will not cast off without every electronic gizzmo available will say no too.

Then you get those who say that the best boat for the job is the boat you have right now. They will say "go". I belong to this group.

The question to ask is "can I do it on an Achilles 24?"
If you think so, I say go.
Have fun and keep us posted.

Regards,
Banjo.

, , and through-hulls are sound. But since you're a rank beginner, the real question is, can you make it. The toughest part of the trip will likely be from down to the Canary Islands. After that, it's "mostly" downwind sailing around the mid-Atlantic High into the Tradewinds, though you could run into gales or at least heavy squalls on the Canaries-West Indies leg.

I think it would be prudent for you to make certain you can handle the NE Atlantic, especially the Bay of Biscay crossing. Perhaps you should get out there and knock around in the North Sea for a couple of weeks to hone your skills, making sure to experience some challenging weather/sea state conditions.

Perhaps I am becoming one of Banjos bathtub admirals, but I want to be able to stand up in the morning to get dressed.

How about spending the summer sailing and around the UK and , followed by spending next in the southern . Cruising Morroco, and Libya could be a really interesting experience.

The only downside to an Achilles 24 is the lack of space down below. They are easy-peasy to sail single-handed. Conditions which scare the Sh1t out of you in other boats are like a millpond to an Achilles 24. I could go on and on, but like I said, they are fantastic sailing boats, just ever so teeny down below. A very happy Achilles 24 owner for the last 15 years.

Seajet

A couple of friends had Achilles 24's; they sail very well indeed - as they should, Oliver lee was involved in the design as well as Chris Butler - especially to windward. However even I was shocked by the tiny narrow ' tunnel ' space in the cabin, it was a choice of ' either the crew OR the inflatable tender below, not both at the same time ! The { correctly termed ) bilge keels are very short and thin on the triple keel version, and just sink into soft mud as if they're not there - leaving the boat on her ear but I'd imagine quite some strain on the hull - I have photo's of this happening to a chum's boat, somewhere - he only kept her there for one season then put her in a nearby marina because of this. If you can get a fin keeler on a deep water mooring and are happy with your knees around your chin, she's a proper sailors' boat.

Our previous boat was an Achilles. As others have said an excellent boat. Good in all sorts of conditions and all that. Get a roller Genoa and a decent reefing main sail. Nearly got pushed overboard reefing the main. Yes they are small down below, but you can do everything from the berth. Not great for conjugal relations though. Would I buy another one? Yes!

MoodySabre

My son has one. We did the initial trip from Aberaeron to Lawrenny, stopping overnight in Fishguard. What a great sailing boat. It's cosy down below but two long quarter berths and a loo under the forepeak. Oregon cooker. What surprised me was the storage space in the huge lazarette and under the bunks. 5hp outboard in the well shoves it along very adequately. I'd choose one if I needed to downsize. A friend had one with inmast reefing which was bonkers. The roller reefing though is rubbish and needs to be converted to slab reefing. and under the berths

We have 4 Achilles currently in our harbour, and I have to admit there have been times when I have struggled in beating them when racing in my Invicta. They do sail very well and seem to be bomb proof, but as others have said cramped down below.

I owned one about 20 years ago... Had an inboard 1GM10...very well built boat and suited me as first cruiser after dinghies but small and I quickly outgrew it...

I bought one because it was the right price. Great fun. You have to like being near the action. Get a good set of waterproofs. Sort of dinghy sailing with a bed and a loo.

Review of Achilles 24

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 4 berths, a galley and toilet facility.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.07 - 1.17 meter (3.51 - 3.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Achilles 24 is typically equipped with an engine.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Achilles 24 is 2.04, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Achilles 24 is about 85 kg/cm, alternatively 476 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 85 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 476 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 14m 2 (150 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 7.3 m(23.9 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Genoa sheet7.3 m(23.9 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)

Broker's Comments

The Achilles 24 is recognised as a classic pocket cruiser. She is a capable yet rewarding boat to sail, and easy to handle. This example has an outboard engine complete with a blanking plug to streamline underneath for less drag and enhanced performance.

She has a double berth in the forward cabin with a toilet located under the berths. There are 2 single berths aft. There its a lot of evidence to suggest she has been well maintained and cared for, including;

- The boat has a 20W solar panel from Photonic Universe with proper controller - Includes a USB and 12 v charger - New GX1400GPS Standard Horizon VHF with GPS and DSC - Raymarine i40 log and sound deeper (new 2020) - Newish (2019) 85 Ah deep cycle battery in very good condition - New-ish Harken Traveller - 4 HP 2 stroke Mariner engine in good condition + external fuel tank - Plug for the well - with blanking plug - helps increase the speed - Includes Heavy cradle - would suit a boat up to 32-35 feet - Brand new Tohatsu 6HP Sail Pro (Nov 2021) available instead of Mariner 4 HP for extra price (700 GBP) - All lines led aft for safety and convenience including reefing - hoisting sails + sails control from cockpit, 8 jammers and cleats, 4 each side (2021) - Slab reefing - improved in 2021 for speed and safety - Strengthened chainplates and bulkheads (2022) - Full paint job 2022 (Toplac Plus/Interdeck) - Antifouled (Hempel Performance) - 2 layers

She is a lovely little boat and offers excellent value for money. For a personal inspection please contact a member of the Boatshed Team.

Cost Of Ownership

History Crazy Puffin was originally purchased circa 1971 as a hull and deck kit from the moulders by her first owner. She was fitted out with bulkheads and floor but further progress was halted by illness. She was purchased by the current owner, a marine engineer, in June 1991 and fitted out to a unique and high standard as can be seen. She was first launched for the 1992 season and has remained in the same ownership since then.

Owners Comments The Achilles 24 is probably one of the best small cruiser/racers of its size and offers exciting performance combined with robust seaworthiness. Crazy Puffin has been fitted out to an exacting specification, and has been rigorously maintained since her launch in 1992. She has been raced very successfully, regularly winning Lymington club series and regattas in her class. She demonstrates excellent sea keeping qualities and has proved herself on many cross-channel cruises, as well as the usual Solent weekend trips. Whilst her accommodation is more modest than more recent higher volume yachts she has enough room for a couple or a young family to cruise in comfort and safety. For exciting sailing on a modest budget the Achilles 24 ticks all the right boxes, and Crazy Puffin is one of the nicest you will find. We think she has been pretty special!

A Father’s Last Act: Shielding His Family From Gunshots

Relatives and friends described Corey Comperatore, who was fatally shot at a Trump rally, as a devoted father who served as a volunteer firefighter and loved to fish.

Ernesto Londoño reported from Minneapolis, Christina Morales and Isabelle Taft in New York, and Brian Conway in Sarver, Pa.

  • July 14, 2024

Corey Comperatore, 50, was a family man who loved to fish. He worked at a plastics manufacturing company, volunteered as a firefighter and went to church.

An “avid supporter” of Donald J. Trump, as Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania put it, Mr. Comperatore attended the former president’s campaign rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday with his family, alongside thousands of fellow fans who gathered on a sweltering evening.

When a gunman fired shots from the roof of a nearby building, Mr. Comperatore threw himself over his family members to shield them, according to the governor. Mr. Comperatore was shot in the head and died at the scene , authorities said. Two other rally attendees were critically injured in the shooting.

Officials and Mr. Comperatore’s sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, confirmed his identity on Sunday. “We watched him die on the news,” she said in a phone interview, through tears. “That’s how we found out.”

Mr. Shapiro, a Democrat, said on Sunday that Mr. Comperatore “died a hero,” adding that “Corey was the very best of us.”

Mr. Comperatore, of Sarver, Pa., had two daughters — Allyson, 27, and Kaylee, 24. He and Jeff Lowers, a longtime friend, were volunteer firefighters together, and Mr. Lowers said that Mr. Comperatore’s quick instincts appeared to come into play during the shooting. Mr. Lowers said he learned about his friend’s actions from Mr. Comperatore’s wife, Helen.

“Being a volunteer fireman, no matter what you’re doing, when the whistle goes off and the monitor goes off, you go and do what you need to do,” said Mr. Lowers, 63.

At the rally, Dr. James Sweetland, an emergency room physician who was at the event, rushed to help Mr. Comperatore after he was shot. He said that Mr. Comperatore was lying in a pool of blood, and two people helped lift him onto a bench so he could give CPR. Someone else put pressure on Mr. Comperatore’s wound above his ear. But Dr. Sweetland said there was no pulse. Two Pennsylvania State troopers helped lift Mr. Comperatore onto a stretcher.

David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pa., is one of the two rally attendees who were critically wounded, the Pennsylvania State Police said Sunday. Mr. Dutch, who served in the Marine Corps, has worked for Siemens for decades, according to his sister, Jennifer Veri-Grazier. She said that he seemed “ecstatic” for the rally, but is now in the hospital being treated for damage to the liver and broken ribs.

Law enforcement officers walking across grass in front of a stage, bleachers and chairs. A large American flag waves above them.

The police identified James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pa., as the other critically injured victim. Records showed that he was registered as a Democrat. Mr. Copenhaver is married with at least one son, according to Albert Quaye, a supervisor in Moon Township. Mr. Quaye said he knew him from local board of supervisor meetings, which Mr. Copenhaver started attending to express concerns about a local development project.

Both men are being treated at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Law enforcement officials said the victims were shot by the gunman, who opened fire from an elevated position outside the security perimeter. The suspected gunman, whom the F.B.I. identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa., was killed by Secret Service agents.

Another person wounded during the attack is a nephew of Representative Ronny Jackson, a Texas Republican who served as Mr. Trump’s White House doctor. Dr. Jackson wrote in a post on X that a bullet grazed his nephew’s neck.

As the shooting sent shock waves across the nation, family and friends of Mr. Comperatore were mourning their loss on Sunday.

Mr. Comperatore loved to fish, so much that he refused to buy fish at the grocery store, Mr. Lowers said. He took meticulous care of his home, boat and cars.

He worked at the plastic company JSP, said another friend and fellow firefighter, Gary Risch Jr. He previously served as a fire chief at the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, Mr. Risch said.

Kip Johnston, the current chief of the fire company, said Mr. Comperatore was his chief for about three years in the early 2000s. “He was a great leader,” he said. “You couldn’t meet a more humble guy.”

Mr. Johnston later lamented, “I never got to go fishing with him.”

An American flag waved in the humid breeze from the front porch of Mr. Comperatore’s gray and white-trimmed home in Sarver, a town about 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, where modest residential houses abut farms and woodlands by Little Buffalo Creek. A dozen long-stem roses lay on the front lawn.

George Scott, Mr. Comperatore’s brother-in-law, briefly stepped out of Mr. Comperatore’s house. “We’re doing terrible,” he said. “He was everything to them,” he added, referring to the family. Mr. Scott was then ushered back into the house by the family’s pastor, Jonathan Fehl, of nearby Cabot Church.

“They want to be alone in their grieving process,” Mr. Fehl said of the family.

Mr. Comperatore was selected as a future trustee of Cabot Church in 2021, helping to oversee issues like church property and insurance. The most recent Cabot Church newsletter celebrated Mr. Comperatore’s birthday, June 14, and his wedding anniversary, June 22.

Matt Achilles, 33, has lived several houses down from Mr. Comperatore and his family for eight years. He described Mr. Comperatore as a staple in their tight-knit neighborhood. He could often be seen on a tractor, mowing his lawn or taking care of his two beloved and well-trained Dobermans.

A few years ago, a vehicle wound up in Mr. Comperatore’s yard after an accident. “As soon as the car was out of there with the tow truck, he’s out there fixing it,” Mr. Achilles recalled. “He was so attentive to detail when it came to stuff like that.”

Mr. Achilles said Mr. Comperatore had donated money to him through an online fund-raising platform when he was hospitalized several years ago. Last Christmas, he recalled, Mr. Comperatore asked if Mr. Achilles knew of anyone in need so he could donate a ham. He ended up giving one to a single mother with five children.

“You’re a good man!” Mr. Achilles messaged him.

Our Coverage of the Trump Rally Shooting

The Investigation : F.B.I. officials told Congress that the 20-year-old gunman who tried to kill Donald Trump used his cellphone and other devices to search for images of Trump and President Biden .

Security Blind Spots : Even as investigators continue to examine what happened at the Trump rally, it is already clear that there were multiple missed opportunities to stop the gunman  before the situation turned deadly.

The Gunman : In interviews, former classmates of the suspect described him as intelligent but solitary , someone who tried to avoid teasing by fellow students.

Secret Service Director : Kimberly Cheatle  returned in 2022 to lead the agency she had served for nearly 30 years. Now, the assassination attempt on Trump has thrown her tenure into uncertainty .

Fears of What’s Next : Among voters, there is growing anxiety that America’s political divide is nearly beyond repair, and the shooting only made things worse .
